We outline the application of a new method of evidence calculation called nested sampling Skilling (2004). We use a clustered ellipsoidal bound to restrict the parameter space sampled, that is generic enough to be used for even complex multimodal posteriors. This dissertation presents an exploration of the use of nonparametric statistical methods based on ranks for use in financial market research. Applications to event study methodology and the estimation of security systematic risk are analyzed using a simulation methodology with actual daily security return data. This study investigated the usefulness and validity of the instrument in a South African setting, fourteen years after the development of the instrument. The first section of this thesis addresses the problem of simultaneously identifying multiple loci that are associated with a trait, using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. It is applicable to both case/control and quantitative data. I present simulations comparing the methods to standard frequentist methods in human case/control and mouse QTL datasets, and show that in the case/control simulations the standard frequentist method out performs my model for all but the highest effect simulations and that for the mouse QTL simulations my method performs as well as the frequentist method

A large part of the thesis concerns the measurement of galaxy shapes for weak gravitational lensing and the systematics they introduce. The aim of the work in this thesis is to carry out dimension reduction (DR) for high dimensional (HD) data by using statistical methods for variable selection, feature extraction and a combination of the two. In Chapter 2, the DR is carried out through robust feature extraction. Robust canonical correlation (RCCA) methods have been proposed. In the correlation matrix of canonical correlation analysis (CCA), we suggest that the Pearson correlation should be substituted by robust correlation measures in order to obtain robust correlation matrices.
