Spices are a hot issue that is now being discussed by various groups. The Presence of spices in the archipelago became one of the pioneers for various cultural manifestations that appeared in various regions of the archipelago. One form of the presence of spices that is reflected in this cultural form is the traditional steam bath which is carried out in various regions in the archipelago. This paper tries to examine the traditional steam bath which has the potential to become an intangible cultural heritage in Indonesia. In addition to this potential, traditional steam baths can also be an indicator of the distribution of spice plants in the archipelago from the past to the present. Therefore, this study uses qualitative methods and searches for sources of information from literature studies. The result of the study shows that traditional steam bathing is a spice bath tradition that is spread across ten regions in Indonesia and is dominated by people who have a background of Malay cultural influence.

Introduction: Hydrotherapy is one of the basic methods of traditional treatment widely used in the system of naturopathy and this is the external or internal use of water in any of its forms (water, ice or steam) for health promotion or treatment of various diseases under different temperatures, pressure, duration and site depends on the condition. Steam bath is a form of hydrotherapy in which the person gets exposed to steam inside a wooden cabin except his head. This study aims to find out the immediate effect of steam bath followed by cold shower on body temperature among healthy volunteers. Materials and Methods: Fifteen volunteers were randomly selected from medical students enrolled in a naturopathic programme. The participants were of both sexes aged between 18 and 20 years. A steam bath was given to each of the participants for 20 minutes followed by cold shower for 5 minutes. The outcome measure was body temperature. Results: All the 15 participants were completed the study, all the participants have shown reduction in body temperature (p=.001) was statistically significant. Discussion: This study reveals that steam bath for 20 minutes followed by cold shower duration of 5 minutes reduces body temperature significantly. This may be due to heat loss from body through evaporation of secreted sweat and cold shower. Further studies are required to confirm our findings in different population. Key words: Hydrotherapy, steam bath, cold shower, body temperature, healthy individuals.

Bath-houses in medieval Denmark – a cultural historyThe subject of this article is bath-houses in medieval Denmark. The text is based on all available written sources from Denmark, but in order to obtain a fuller perspective on some aspects of the history of bath-houses it has also been necessary to use German sources as a supplement.Based on the scant historical records dealing with the course of actual bathing activity, it is argued that the most common bath was the sweat bath (similar to a modern sauna) rather than tub baths. A stove covered with granite boulders was heated and the bathers would produce sweat using either the direct heat of the stove or from steam produced by pouring cold water onto the hot stones. Sweating was further stimulated by beating the body with bundles of birch twigs and the bath culminated with rinsing in cold water (figs. 2-4). It is argued that, similar to the situation in both Germany and Sweden, bath-house staff would offer haircuts, bleeding and the treatment of wounds in addition to an actual bath (figs. 5-6). Referring to specific medieval illustrations, some argue that men and women bathed together in the public bath-houses, leading to sexual excesses. However, the relevant illustrations often depict brothels and not public baths (fig. 1).It is evident from historical records that members of all social classes frequented the public bath-houses – even royalty. From the early 14th century onwards we have historical evidence of so-called soul baths i.e. sums of money bequeathed by wealthy people to the poor to enable the latter to take a bath, often accompanied by a meal. Such bequests were common in the late 15th century but disappeared abruptly with the Reformation. According to medieval records, the use of bath-houses was also considered important in order to maintain health. The earliest indications in historical records of the existence of bath-houses in Denmark are found in Saxo’s Chronicles from the end of 12th century. From the 1260s onward specific bath-houses in towns appear in the historical records. Judging from the number of bath-houses mentioned in Danish towns it is argued that public bath-houses were a common feature in the urban landscape of medieval Denmark. The number of public bath-houses in towns declined at the beginning of the 16th century and even though a few existed in the major cities up until the 18th century the popularity of these institutions declined. The reasons for this are epidemics of syphilis occurring from the 1490s onward, the phasing out of soul baths and possibly a change in attitudes towards nudity and personal hygiene that resulted in a decline in general cleanliness in post-medieval times.Mikael Manøe BjerregaardVejle Museum

Coronavirus disease (Covid19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARSCoV2 virus. Most people infected with COVID-19 show mild to moderate symptoms and recover without specific treatment. According to the monitoring results of the Lampung Provincial government, patients with Covid-19 cases in Lampung until June reached 57110 people. Patients with Covid-19 cases in Central Lampung until June 2022 reached 4,549 people. The main thing we need to know is that we will easily catch the Covid-19 virus if our immune system decreases. One alternative to increase the body's immunity is to take a spice steam bath or often referred to as an archipelago spice sauna. The Nusantara Spice Sauna is a therapy that uses warm steam as a medium. People undergoing this therapy will be placed in specially designed cubicles. This research was conducted in Gunung Sugih, Central Lampung Regency, RSUD Demang Island Raya from July – August 2021. The study used a simple randomized method for the number of Covid-19 patients. The main variables are counting the number of patients exposed to the Covid-19 virus and counting the number of patients who experience changes after taking the archipelago spice steam bath. For this experiment, the number of samples was 30 people who were exposed to the Covid-19 virus. In the fourth week, many patients have experienced a change for the better. Both in terms of health (negative Covid-19) and psychology. It is suspected, with the steam bath of Nusantara spices, the patient will excrete toxins in the body through sweat. In addition, the spice steam contains essential oils (essential oils) that can cleanse the internal organs of the body (detox). The warm steam also produces aromatherapy which increases the relaxing effect. reduce stress levels and increase body immunity so that the body is exposed to the Covid-19 virus. The physical scale of buildings like the Baths of Caracalla give the clearest indication of the importance of bathing in the classical order of things – though whether what Romans did in the bath was always clean and decent may be an open question. But what about the prehistory of bathing, and particularly of bathing in steam? An answer is given here which links the historical and ethnographic record to burnt mounds, among the more common and puzzling types of north European site.

A Finnish proverb says that the sauna is the most democratic space in the world . Here, we dismantle our vestments of social status and relax in a distinct social space where everyone shares the same basic needs of comfort and the refreshment of body and soul. This is the ideal condition of Finnish sauna. In the cultural climate of New England, a sauna that facilitates this condition must be reinvented. I have designed a sauna adapted for the MIT Campus. Here, through the interaction of the bathers, a social dynamic similar to the Finnish can emerge, also for those who do not share the cultural understanding of Finns. The Hybrid New England/Finnish Sauna was open for public bathing on MIT Campus, from May the 6th until May the 22nd , 1999. The need for continuous improvement within a value stream is very necessary in today's business environment and can be one of the key sources of competitive advantage. As a company learns and implements the tools and practices of a Lean system, the underlying management and leadership methods become critical to sustaining fundamental operational change. A Value Stream Manager provides this leadership and is responsible for increasing the ratio of value to non-value by eliminating waste in the overall value chain from start to finish. The scope of the responsibilities of a value stream manager should cover at least two domains. First is the plant domain, that improves the value stream between the four walls of the plant; including the inbound and outbound logistics to/from the plant. The second domain is to consider the value stream at the enterprise-level. At the enterprise-level, the value stream manager is responsible for eliminating waste throughout the extended value stream, including channel partners such as suppliers and customers. This thesis will examine the operations of the ABB Wessel Cable plant in Longford, Ireland and analyze the application of Value Stream Management principles during a six and a half month internship period. By involving all the employees at ABB Wessel we were able to reduce WIP and Finished good levels down to historic lows holding scrap below 4% and increase overall equipment effectiveness by almost 30%. By concentrating on velocity of flow through the factory with reduced overtime, the business stopped losing money. In the proposed future state, additional performance enhancing changes are identified and discussed as a going forward plan for the future.

Yesterday's desert is today your new home, is tomorrow's strip mall. The West remains the American 'way out' a chance to reinvent oneself, 'to make it'. Yet, the desert landscape is fraught with the politics of displacement, exploitation, and imposition, carrying with it a socio-political dimension. Our collective imprint on this uniquely American geographic region is staggering. Going west- symbolizing the quest for freedom and opportunity is 'seen' as the place to reinvent oneself regardless of the obvious damage that occurs when we choose to also relocate our un-revised modalities for living-our lifestyle- within this context. This thesis seeks to investigate a particular condition: the proliferation of the single-family suburban house within the American Desert context in conjunction with aesthetics of the American Dream, desire, and leisure. Life Under the Desert Sun proposes the re-invention of suburban living in the American Desert based on two metrics: [1] an embrace of arid living via a reduction in the water consumptive lifestyle due to a lack of water availability and [2] the logic, success, and desirability of the mass produced single-family home. This condition of spreading suburban housing within 'affordable' desert regions houses over 20 Million Americans. The proposal focuses on the area of southern California within the Antelope Valley at the edge of both the Los Angeles Metro Area and the Mohave Desert, as the region is now facing an extreme drought condition, for the fifth year.

AbstractFrauds in financial services are an ever-increasing phenomenon, and cybercrime generates multimillion revenues, therefore even a small improvement in fraud detection rates would generate significant savings. This chapter arises from the need to overcome the limitations of the rule-based systems to block potentially fraudulent transactions. After mentioning the limitations of rule-based approach, this chapter explains how machine learning is able to address many of these limitations and, more effectively, identify risky transactions. A novel AI-based fraud detection system – built over a Data Science and Machine Learning – is presented for the pre-processing of transaction data and model training in a batch layer (to periodically retrain the predictive model with new data) while in a stream layer, the real-time fraud detection is handled based on new input transaction data. The architecture presented makes this solution a valuable tool for supporting fraud analysts and for automating the fraud detection processes.

In recent years, research institutions worldwide have developed a number of new mobile hydraulic systems. Despite their improved energy efficiency, these systems have yet to gain market acceptance due to their related increase in component costs and decrease in robustness. At the Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Controls in Aachen, a new system for mobile machines, named STEAM (Steigerung der Energieeffizienz in der Arbeitshydraulik mobiler Arbeitsmaschinen), is being developed using inexpensive off-the-shelf components. The aim is to improve the total system efficiency by considering all the subsystems in the machine. This is done by integrating the internal combustion engine (ICE) into the hydraulic design process. By using a constant pressure system in combination with a low-cost fixed displacement pump the hydraulic system is designed to ensure the ICE experiences a constantly high load in a region of high efficiency, so-called point operation. To decrease the hydraulic losses incurred when supplying the linear actuators with flow, an additional intermediate pressure rail with independent metering edges is used. This enables various energy efficient discrete operating modes, including energy regeneration and recuperation.

Abstract In recent years several novel hydraulic architectures have been proposed with the intention of significantly increasing system efficiency. Two of these architectures, Steigerung der Energieefflzienz in der Arbeitshydraulik mobiler Arbeitsmaschinen (STEAM), and the Hybrid Hydraulic-Electric Architecture (HHEA), use a system of multiple common pressure rails (CPRs) to serve the multiple degrees-of-freedom of the machine. The key difference is that STEAM throttles hydraulic power from these rails while HHEA combines electric and hydraulic power to meet actuator demands. As a throttle-less architecture, HHEA is expected to save more energy than STEAM at the expense of added complexity. Therefore, it is useful to quantify this additional energy saving. Both systems have discrete operational choices corresponding to how the CPRs are utilized for each actuator. It is necessary to determine optimal operation for each of these architectures for analysis and fair comparison. Techniques for optimal operation of the HHEA have been developed previously from the Langrange multiplier method. Applying the same optimal control method to STEAM encountered some technical challenge leading to the optimal control algorithm not being able to satisfy certain constraints. The issue is analyzed and solved by adding noise to the optimization. Using this proposed algorithm, case studies are performed to compare the energy-saving potentials of STEAM and HHEA for two sizes of excavators and a wheel-loader performing representative duty cycles. The baseline is a standard load-sensing architecture. Results show that STEAM and HHEA can reduce energy consumption between 35–65% and 50–80% respectively.

To decrease throttling losses in mobile hydraulic systems a number of new system architectures have been introduced in recent years. The concept of independent metering (IM), developed in the seventies, shows a lot of promise [1]. By allowing the meter-in as well as meter-out edges to be controlled separately, additional operating modes are created allowing a more efficient adaptation of system pressure to load pressure [2, 3]. Despite these advantages IM circuits have yet to find their way into industrial applications. This is mainly due to the related increase in component costs and more demanding control strategies. Additionally, the effect of mode switching on actuator motion and operator comfort is still unclear and considered to be a challenge. The STEAM mobile hydraulic system currently being developed in Aachen, Germany uses a number of new features to improve total machine efficiency [4]. Among others is the use of a new independent metering circuit called single edge meter-out control. Unlike other IM configurations, only one proportional valve is used to control cylinder motion. This paper introduces the new concept and discusses its advantages.

Abstract In Alberta, Canada bitumen is produced by SAGD and CSS methods at about 1.5x106 barrels per day capacity. Efficiency of these operations is measured by steam-to-bitumen mass ration, which is reported in the range of 2.6 to 5. Oil industry has invested on solvent such as light hydrocarbons co-injection with steam to reduce SBR, speculating that solvent would reduce bitumen viscosity and increase Darcy mobility of bitumen in the reservoir, which has resulted limited commercial success. In majority of these studies, effect of solvent co-injected with steam on bitumen-water interfacial tension, therefore on Darcy permeability was ignored. Our laboratory has been studying to increase Darcy permeability of bitumen by reducing bitumen-water interfacial tension. For this purpose two methods were investigated: (i) surfactant species were produced by in-situ sulfonation-sulfoxidation of bitumen asphaltenes by co-injecting a trace amount of gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2) with steam; and (ii) co-injection of biodiesel (BD) as a surfactant additive, with steam at under 2 g-BD/kg-bitumen dosages, which corresponds to under 0.32 kg-BD/bbl-bitumen, or under 0.67 kg-BD/ton-steam if SBR is 3:1. Bitumen recovery tests were also made to compare performances of solvent versus surfactant co-injection with steam methods by operating the test apparatus in bath mode, which most likely stimulate the steam zone of the steam zone of the SAGD and CSS reservoirs. These tests showed that solvent co-injection potentially reduces bitumen recovery efficiency compared to steam-only methods. We wonder that the solvent co-injected with steam increases bitumen-water interfacial tension, increases slip velocity at bitumen-water interface and reduces Darcy permeability of bitumen. Experimental observations supported with fluid dynamics analysis of two immiscible fluids with slip boundary condition at the interface of two fluids were encouraging to expand our research in BD-water emulsions flooding for cold heavy oil recovery, CHOPS and Post CHOPS, and BD-solvent-water emulsions flooding for extra viscous heavy oil, and bitumen production from high permeability reservoirs, which would eliminate demand for steam. Experimental data on bitumen viscosity, bitumen-water interfacial tension and potential effects of solvent and surfactant co-injection with steam on commercial steam assisted bitumen and heavy oil recovery operations will be discussed.

Particulate contamination is a major yield loss factor in the manufacturing of microelectronic, data-storage, and other hi-tech devices. A single particle as small as 0.1 μm in size can cause complete micro-electronic circuit failure, or seriously degrade read/write performance of magnetic storage devices or even result in a crash of the magnetic head. Standard cleaning techniques, typically performed in liquid baths, have two major drawbacks: first, there is limited cleaning efficiency for submicron particles, and secondly, liquid baths tend to redeposit or even add new particles to the submersed surface. ‘Laser cleaning’, a technique currently being developed, appears capable of overcoming the above shortcomings. We observe that, particles of size 10 - 0.1 μm can be efficiently removed from various surfaces, and there is no need for a liquid bath. The technique we studied is based on the use of <img>-pulsed infrared or ultraviolet lasers to explode a thin liquid film which is condensed onto the surface to be cleaned. Such explosion was studied in detail with nanosecond thermometry, photoacoustic detection, and fast photography. Momentum transfer from the expanding steam to the particles on the surface is believed to be the cause for the ejection of the particles. Ejection to ‘macroscopic’ distances (exceeding a few mm) from the surface facilitates particle collection procedures and thus prevents redeposition; this is of importance for practical application of ‘laser cleaning’.

Numerical simulations of two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer with or without phase change have been carried out. The Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) model was used in the simulations, and a procedure for considering the phase change process was developed. The Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC) method is employed for the interface reconstruction, to keep the sharp interface. The coupling between pressure and velocity is treated by the SIMPLEC algorithm. The surface tension is modeled by the Continuum Surface Force (CSF) model. An in-house code has been developed, and two examples are presented in this paper, i.e., dam-break case and a falling water droplet in a steam bath. The calculation results are compared with corresponding experimental data, and good agreement is obtained.

This paper is concerned with the modeling of complex thermal-fluid phenomena that arises during the process of sterilization of canned food. In the sterilization process, food contained with a typical cylindrical can is subjected to a sudden change in temperature as the can is immersed in a steam bath at saturation temperatures of the order of 120 degrees C. Because of this transient heating event, complex transient buoyant motion is initiated in the can and therefore the heating of the food is as a result of diffusion and buoyant or natural convection processes. A Finite Volume method was used to investigate the unsteady two dimensional (axisymmetric) natural convection of a non-Newtonian liquid food during sterilization. The non-Newtonian liquid food was modeled using carboxy-methyl cellulose. Because its apparent viscosity depends on both temperature and non-linear velocity gradients, the resulting mathematical formulation is highly non-linear, thereby requiring a highly coupled implementation of the Finite Volume Method. Transient two dimensional velocity and temperature fields were obtained for different heating conditions and can aspect ratios. It was found that lower can aspect ratios and lower index n generally lead to shorter sterilization times.

In the event of a hypothetical core disruptive accident in nuclear power plants, the molten core may flow out thereactor vessel and interact with the cold water. The evolution of the accident is strongly affected by the fragmentation of the jet of molten metallic fuel due to its interaction with the water (i.e. this situation is known as fuel coolant interaction, FCI). In order to evaluate and predict the various consequences of a FCI, many researches are conducted with either corium or high melting temperature molten metal, where premixing stage evolves with an important production of steam. This steam production that is unavoidable because the high temperature of corium leads to difficulties for using optical diagnostics. Hence, in our case, we use a eutectic alloy (Field’s metal) with a low melting point (62°C) in order to be able to visualize correctly the droplet fragmentation processes. The present work focuses on the fragmentation of a single Field’s metal liquid droplet with mass equals to 0.27g (±0.01g). The liquid droplet interacts with a water pool whose temperature range between 20°C to 60°C. According to its Weber number, it fragments in different ways. For each experiment, a single droplet has been visualized using a high-speed camera (at 8000 fps). All measurements (drop size, velocity, impact parameter and geometrical properties of the drops after the penetration) into the pool are evaluated using an open source image processing. Solidified fragments can then be sieved and the size PDF determined. Focus of the present work is put on the evolution of the Sauter Mean Diameter with increasing Weber number and varying bath pool temperature. It is shown that using a simple crust model during solidification and defining an effective Weber number which include the crust elasticity all the curves collapse on the same master curve for all the water bathtemperature considered.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.5034
