AbstractThis exploratory study examines the application of methods used in the United States to evaluate the impact of school library programs and services on student learning to a setting in Uppsala, Sweden. The Student Learning through Ohio School Libraries study of Todd and Kuhlthau served as the model for data collection in Uppsala middle and high schools and subsequent analysis. Modifications to the original study and details of the data collection and analysis are provided. Findings suggest that many students do perceive that the library program provides different categories of help in their learning processes, that students may benefit from direct instruction in all stages of the information problem-solving process, and that the application of methods to school library settings worldwide may enable meaningful comparisons of practice in school libraries. Findings are limited by the amount of time between data collection and analysis, and modifications to the methodology applied in the original study. Still, this effort marks a critical benchmark in international efforts to demonstrate the impact of the school library on student achievement.

The purpose of this article is to analyse three case study examples of musical folkbildning in Sweden. The first case study is from the establishment of the state-funded Framnäs Folk High Music School in the middle of the last century. The second case study, Hagström's music education, is from the same time but describes a music school run by a private company. The third case study concerns a contemporary expression of folkbildning, namely hip-hop. The theoretical framework that inspired this article stems from the work of Pierre Bourdieu. The double feature of folkbildning appears in terms of: elitist and democratic tendencies, high and low taste agendas, control and freedom.

Erica Simon26/2 1910 - 11/2 1993William Michelsen writes a personal obituary about the French Grundtvig scholar Erica Simon. He first met Erica Simon in the middle of the fifties, when she was studying the Swedish folk high schools and wanted to meet all the Grundtvig scholars and people who put Grundtvig’s ideas into practice. Erica Simon was a university professor in Scandinavian languages and literature, but she also founded her own folk high scholl west of Lyons. Erica Simon’s interest in Grundtvig and her commitment to the Grundtvig’s ideal of .the school for life. was aroused in the mid-fifties, when she studied at Uppsala and met the Swedish folk high scholl Hvilan in Sk.ne. Erica Simon worked together especially with the Nordic folk high school in Kung.lv, and she wanted to spread the knowledge of Grundtvig’s ideas, not only in France, but all over the world. Like Grundtvig, Erica Simon wanted to find the roots of folk culture behind the influence from the Roman Empire, an influence which underlies the centralized school system dating back to Napoleonic France. Erica Simon’s main subject in her Grundtvig research was his ideas of the connection between folk enlightenment and science or scholarship. Science and folk culture are different matters but have to interact in order to establish a scholarship built on folk culture. In accordance with Grundtvig, Erica Simon stresses medieval Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic literature as the Nordic element in universal history, establishing a vernacular culture in opposition to the Latin school and scholarship. Erica Simon was a passionate scholar and interpreter of Grundtvigian ideas. She often visited Denmark and was on the Committe of Grundtvig-Selskabet, where she gave lectures, and she published papers in the Grundtvig-Studier in 1969 and 1973.Erica Simon was born i Königsberg on February 26th, 1910. She spent her youth in Hannover and afterwards studied language and literature in Geneva and in Paris. She married in 1936 and became a widow in 1942, but remarried, bearing the name Vollboudt. Jacques Kleiner, her son from her first marriage, today lives in Switserland. From 1939-54 she was a secondary school teacher in France, but in 1954 she began studying the Nordic folk high school, doing research in Uppsala in 1955-56. In 1962 she became a doctor at the Sorbonne University in Paris (Doctorat d.tat in 1962), with a dissertation about the Swedish folk high schools in the late 18th century.

School subjects and moral education: A comparative study of civics and life-skillsThis article is concerned with two school subjects that were introduced in Swedish schools during the 20th century: civics and life-skills. Drawing on textbooks in civics from the 1950s to the 1960s and textbooks in life-skills from the 2000s, the aim is to analyse and compare the morality conveyed in the respective school subjects during its introductory years. It is argued that civics and life-skills can be used to get a grip of differences between different historical contexts, since the two school subjects emerged in two different time periods. Civics emerged as a school subject for the comprehensive schools during the middle of the 20th century, and might therefore be labeled as a typically “modern” school subject, whereas life skills emerged in the late 1990s, and might therefore be labeled a “late modern” school subject. Given that these two school subjects emerge as novelties in two different time periods, they can be used to discuss how the meaning of moral education in schools is related to general social tendencies.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the Swedish National Agency for Education’s launch of the nationwide Lgr11 curriculum reform and how local education authorities (LEAs) in one municipality translated and responded to the National Agency’s directives. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents empirical data from a qualitative study of documents and interviews using the analytical perspective from Scott (2001, 2008) to explore regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive aspects of the National Agency’s communications. To analyse the local translations made by LEAs at the central municipal level, analytical categories of assimilation, loose coupling and transformation were used. Findings – The overall results show that the National Agency primarily communicated its policy instructions to LEAs using normative and cultural-cognitive arguments and directives. The lack of sharper regulative directives, such as for division of labour, decision making, mandates and developmental roles, reduced the potential for LEAs to become influential actors in organising local implementation. An analysis using the assistance of assimilation categories, loose coupling and transformation of the paper also shows that LEAs need system support to accomplish more innovative middle-tier translations through elements of loose coupling and transformation – to become catalysts for school system improvement. Research limitations/implications – The research is designed to understand actions and interpretations within specific institutional, organisational and social settings. Originality/value – This paper contributes to former findings by offering a novel perspective for understanding policy translation and the role of middle-tier intermediaries in decentralised education systems.

Public accusations often lead to controversy. Accusations have been studied as causing certain types of defense, as well as for how accusing parties persuade audiences of guilt, and amplify an act’s offensiveness. We investigate a satire programme as a strategic act, with a specific focus on how its accusatory rhetorical structure strategically invites certain responses, and counteracts others. We show how a segment in the news satire programme ‘Swedish News’ constructed a complex accusation against the Swedish private school queue system, and against the character of the educated middle class who tend to use it. The segment’s structure places the accused middle class as an addressed audience in three different subject positions, wherein the relationship between them motivates penance rather than defense. The analysis shows how a changing positioning of the same group as judge, victim and accused can perform certain functions in accusatory speech, indicating roads to redemption and opening up for possibilities of reconciliation

The PISA reports presented between 2000 and 2013 display a sustained decline in the mathematics proficiency of Swedish middle school students. The latest OECD reports suggest that the downward trend is still present, whereby the aim of this thesis is to investigate its underlying causes. Can the decline be deduced from the poor performance of specific Swedish municipalities with significantly worse results than others? By analyzing the current situation in Swedish education from a national standpoint, the intention is to derive the main factors for good overall math performance in middle school within a municipality. Moreover, the thesis aims to identify areas of possible enhancement within the Swedish education system on a municipal as well as a national level, by analyzing how political financial decisions and society as a whole factor into student performance. Finally, the impact of education on aspects of macroeconomics is analyzed. It is arbitrated that several factors controllable by the government have significant impact on the average math performance of students in a Swedish municipality. The results from the analysis indicate that governmental expenditures are better spent on quality of teaching than on the quantity of teachers present.

This thesis is a qualitative text analysis of worksheets used in conjunction with watching films in English language studies in Swedish middle schools. The assignments used in the thesis were partly collected from partner schools in the teacher program and partly collected from a website which is a database of teacher submitted lesson plans. The results of the thesis include a presentation and discussion of different worksheets used by teachers, using a structure based on one used for critical discourse analysis instruction with students. The evidence suggests that two factors gave an increase in explicitly named aspects of critical literacy in film studies: firstly, that the assignment be situated in a program of study within the Swedish curriculum which shares many of the goals of critical literacy studies and secondly that the choice of film is one that challenges students to reconsider their experiences in light of the film. This study also raises the concern that the questioning methods used to implement critical literacy studies are being used to increase student talk for the purposes of grading oral proficiency without interactive discussions.

The purpose of this study is to analyze if textbooks used in Swedish for second language learners incorporate translanguaging and inclusion. The textbooks used in this study are aimed at pupils in Swedish middle school (ages 10-12). The material that we have used and analyzed are the textbooks Språkis – svenska för nyfikna C and Entré elevbok A. As a theory we chose to apply translanguaging. Our analytical starting points for this study are text- and multimodal text analysis. The questions, that this study is based upon, are “Do the textbooks express a translanguaging language vision?” and “Do the textbooks include the intended reader?”. Starting with our questions we created indicators to be able to analyze the textbooks. The indicators that we used to expose translanguaging were comparison of language, mother tongue, meta-markers (looks like, reminds of…) and fixed phrases. The indicators that were used to expose inclusion were; prior knowledge that is assumed, if minorities are noticed -in what way?, how the reader is addressed and level of difficulty in the language. The study showed that the level of prior knowledge needed to be able to use the textbooks set the textbooks apart. It also showed that neither one of the textbooks used the mother tongue as a resource for future learning. We could also see how the usage of pictures differed between the textbooks. Both textbooks, somewhat, used the pictures to support the text, but to a different extent. In conclusion the study shows that the textbook Språkis – svenska för nyfikna C, uses translanguaging and inclusion to a greater extent than Entré elevbok A does.

Framför allt används kamratrespons i svenskans skriva-delar.
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how some teachers in grades 1-6 work with peer responses when assessing student texts in the subject Swedish. Another purpose of the thesis is to gain knowledge about the possibilities and difficulties with the peer response method and to find out how the interviewed teachers believe that the students experience peer response. The starting point is Vygotsky's theory of social-cultural learning in social interaction. The study has used semi-structured qualitative interviews with five teachers from three different schools. Teachers' practice coincides with examples in the literature on how the work method can be used. Most importantly, peer response is used in Swedish writing. The most common method is two stars and a wish. The opportunities and difficulties that the teachers raise are broadly in line with what appears in the literature. What appeared in the interviews as the most important thing to make the peer response work was a positive climate in the group. The study finds a difference between the thoughts of the interviewed teachers and what appears in the literature. The interviewed teachers express that it is difficult to find effective response pairs. What emerged in the literature was instead that it is good to change response pairs often.

The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare middle school student’s understanding of Swedish and English idiomatic expressions. Furthermore, this study aims at investigating whether there is any age progression in the understanding of idioms and examine how teachers work with idiomatic expressions. The study was conducted at two different schools and a total of 196 students from year group 4 - 6 participated in a questionnaire survey and a total of five legitimized teachers was interviewed. The study shows that the overall understanding of idiomatic expressions is relatively low. However, the understanding of Swedish idioms is higher than the understanding of English idioms. The progression of English idiom comprehension follows a more linear development curve, while the progression of Swedish idiom comprehension decreases after year five. In Swedish, students show a greater understanding of the idiomatic form, how an expression is structured, rather than the actual meaning of the expression. In English idiomatic comprehension, the study shows that the students have a greater understanding when it comes to the meaning of the expression rather than the form. The result of the interviews shows that teachers, in both subjects, works with idiomatic expressions to a small extent. Swedish teachers work sporadically when idioms occur in fictional texts or when they appear in other educational materials. English teachers, on the other hand, work with idiomatic expressions in a more planned and structured way.

The aim of this study is to clarify and concretize how teachers in grades 4-6 work with reading comprehension and how they motivate students to read. This study also aims to review teaching material that teachers use when working with reading comprehension. This study contains a qualitative group interview with teachers within the Swedish subject grading 4-6, as well as an analysis of the study material. The Material consists of the fictional book Brorsan är kung and the teacher´s guide. In the analysis, the content is reviewed and connected to motivation, the possibility to develop reading comprehension and the degree of difficulty of the book. The result of the interview shows that the choice of book from an interest standpoint is essential when motivating the students to read. Furthermore, it also shows that the interview teachers work in different ways when it comes to reading and that they utilize different strategies in order to increase the students reading comprehension. This study is closely connected to the pragmatic perspective when it comes to reading books that are close to the students' reality and interests. Also, the study is in line with the sociocultural perspective which indicates that learning comes from interaction with the environment.

The purpose of this essay has been twofold, with both qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The first aimed to investigate whether the status of the subject of history has changed in the curriculum, from 1962 until 2012. Analysis would also be done of the history students meet through study material in history teaching, the analysis was based on Staffan Selander's definition of pedagogical text transformation. The quantitative content analysis has touched whom and the frequency of concepts students meet in the era depiction of the witch trials. The result has shown that the subject of history as a part of the governing documents has had high status, even though the social context has been to deduce the opposite scenario. The link between present, past and future, has through the three examined curricula shown to become increasingly evident, and so has the student's own impact of the history tomorrow. Fact wise, historical depiction has shown to be accurate to the text. However, teaching materials differ between the amount of space the era gets and how detailed the texts are. This has shown to be the manner through the eight selected textbooks that have been examined in this study, from the first, of the year 1962, published study material to the last issued, in the year 2012. The image is a weakness in fact depiction of witch trials when the majority of materials use an incorrect factual picture, which contradicts textual contents. Among the examined concepts of witch trials, no major change of what concepts the students face has occurred over time. However, the space in the body of text of the terms has changed, from one material to another. The shorter the texts about the era is, the greater the percentage of space of concepts and vice versa.

The Swedish welfare state is known for providing extensive services to its citizens. Much less well known is that a fair amount of the services are delivered by private for-profit firms. The first steps of privatization were taken in the mid-1980s for childcare services at the municipal level, and the government often found itself scrambling to introduce regulation afterwards. Other sectors were subsequently privatized, most notably through an extensive voucher scheme to provide choice in compulsory and upper-secondary education. A key question throughout this process has been how to maintain the Swedish egalitarian ethos while undergoing extensive privatization. How has the country managed to reap the benefits from market forces without endangering equitable outcomes? The Swedish system is no middle road between socialism and capitalism. Instead, it is more akin to a large-scale laboratory for institutional design with lessons that should be of broad relevance to other countries aiming to get high-quality welfare services while containing costs. Focusing on what others can learn from Sweden, the book makes accessible original research on schools, health care, and elderly care. The privatization of service production has occurred despite major political controversy between two competing visions for the welfare state. Successful experiments have spread organically to neighbouring municipalities. What was done well in this process and what were the mistakes? The book addresses the fundamental economic challenges, the trends of the future, and the implications for institutional design

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the Swedish School in Jerusalem during the British Mandate period. I argue that while modelled on Swedish educational culture and largely financed from Sweden, the school had a profound local connection to the Arab community. This chapter demonstrates that the educational culture of the school was more important to Arab parents than its religious profile. Arabic was the language of instruction and the children were taught by well-educated Arab female teachers. Parents and pupils influenced the Swedish School’s profile with demands that were created by a new reality under British Mandatory rule. These parents and pupils were also challenged by the fact that pupils from the middle class and the urban poor attended the same lessons and were—in theory at least—treated equally despite social or religious backgrounds.

Sweden has been an immigrant country since World War II, with a mix of labour (especially from neighbouring Nordic countries) and refugee immigration up to the early 1970s and a large inflow of refugees, especially from the Middle East, after that. In 2002, almost 13 percent of the Swedish population was born in another country, summing up to more than one million inhabitants out of a total nine million. Labour immigrants arriving before 1970 used to have a labour-market achievement on a par with native Swedes. In recent decades, however, the first generation of immigrants, particularly those of non-European origin, have had relatively poor success in the labour market. This is counterbalanced by two facts: first, immigrants' labour-market attainment improves with years of residence in Sweden; second, there is considerable assimilation across generations. The second generation (born in Sweden, or who immigrated before starting school) do almost as well in the labour market as those with two Swedish-born parents. The remaining worry for this group is their relatively low employment rates.
