Texto completo da fonteThis thesis offers both an examination of the depiction of Thailand in Australian novels, short stories and poems written in the 1980s and after, and an analysis of modern Thai novels and short stories that reflect similar themes to those covered in the Australian literature. One Australian film is also examined as the film provides an important framework for the analysis of some of the short stories and novels under consideration. The thesis establishes a dialogue between Thai and Australian literatures and demonstrates that the comparison of Australian representations of Thailand with Thai representations challenges constructively certain dominant political and social ideologies that enhance conservatism and the status quo in Thailand. The author acknowledges that the discussion of the representations of Thailand in contemporary Australian novels and short stories needs to take into account the colonial legacy and the discourse of Orientalism that tends to posit the ‘East’ as the ‘West’’s ‘Other’. Textual analysis is thus informed by post-colonial and cross-cultural theories, starting from Edward Said’s powerful and controversial critique of Western representation of the East in Orientalism. The first part of the thesis examines Australian crime stories and shows how certain Orientalist images and perceptions persist and help reinforce the image of the East and its people as the antithesis of the West. From Chapters Three through Six, however, more literary works by Australian authors are examined. The important finding is that most of the Australian authors under consideration attempt, though not always successfully, to resist and challenge the Eurocentric stereotypes of Asia and Asians that dominated Australian literature in earlier periods. This difference between contemporary Australian authors and their predecessors seems to reflect modern Australia’s endeavor to distinguish itself from the rest of the Western world and to redefine its relationship with Asia. As literary representations cannot be separated from socio-political contexts, the thesis also includes discussion of the Thai social and political history and, where appropriate, shows how colonialism and neo-colonialism exert their impact on modern Thailand.

Texto completo da fonteBy analysing short stories from five Thai writers : Atsiri Thammachot, Chat Kopchitti, Sila Khomchai, Wanit Charungkit-anan and Win Liaw-warin (all recipients of SEA Write Award) - I intend to answer to the following question : "Which image of the city world can be found in contemporary Thai literature ?". The point is to show how the writers see and write the city - meaning Bangkok - and its development nowadays and in the past twenty years. This thesis is divided in two parts. The first part, titled "Fiction, ville et société" consists of four sections : the first one is devoted to the history of the literary scene since prose has appeared ; the second is centred on the history of Bangkok, its development and actual configuration ; the third part expose the corpus (abstracts and structures of short stories, themes encountered, typologie of characters) ; the fourth one makes the link between urban world and literature. Two thematic lines are developed : the "visages de la ville" and the 'pratiques de la ville". The second part is dedicated to the writers (biographies and bibliographies) and the traduction of ten short stories (two by author)

Texto completo da fonteMembers of a religious community founded in the 15th century in the Thar desert, the Bishnoi number about 900 000 today, the majority of whom still live in the Rajasthan region. Originating from 29 precepts, several of which codify relationships to other living beings, animal and vegetal, their religious doctrine upholds a life ethic in accordance with these precepts, their ethnonym "Bishnoï" literally meaning twenty-nine, bish: 20, noï: 9. Today the Bishnoi see their values, representations and practices being questioned by a number of socio-economic and ecological factors. In addition to a look into the ruptures and continuities of the transmission of their doctrine and its 29 precepts, this thesis examines the relationships and interactions between the Bishnoi and the animals and trees in their environment, the demands resulting from them, as well as influences on both material and immaterial practices of the present-day community. Practices (along with their related dogmatic references) that have the effect of defining community members’ identity to themselves and to those of the outside world

Texto completo da fonteDespite exceptionally high HIV prevalence rates, South Africa experiences prohibitively low levels of HIV testing. Considered to be a key element in the prevention of HIV transmission and a necessary gateway for providing care and treatment for those who are infected, widespread ignorance of HIV status has become a mounting concern in countries with high prevalence rates. Strategies for increasing testing rates have most commonly focused on testing and treatment services, such as the availability and accessibility of clinics offering voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), the number of trained nurses and health practitioners able to administer HIV tests, the possibility of instituting routine HIV testing to increase coverage, and the provision of highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) in the event of a positive diagnosis. These efforts seek to either increase access to testing through infrastructural improvements or encourage testing by highlighting its function as a gateway to accessing medical services to manage HIV infection and future transmission. In a departure from these strategies, this thesis considers the physical, social, and psychological ramifications of living with HIV - and not simply issues of access, treatment, and prevention - in order to understand HIV testing practices. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 young adults (6 mole and 9 female) living in Cape Town, South Africa. Semi-structured in-depth interviews collected information about: 1) knowledge and sources of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, as well as how this knowledge changes over time; 2) beliefs and attitudes towards HIV and HIV testing, including corresponding health-seeking behaviours; 3) personal stories about HIV testing, including reasons for and reactions to testing; and 4) possible strategies to encourage HIV testing in the future. Study participants identified three broad threats that were perceived to be experienced by HIV positive people and explained how the HIV test served to either mitigate or expose an individual to these threats. Physical threats posed by HIV, such as opportunistic infections or death, encouraged HIV testing as it was only through testing that these potential threats could be mitigated. Conversely, an HIV test exposed an individual to social and psychological threats. The social threats of living with HIV included exclusion, rejection by family and friends, and social shame. Psychological threats included mental destruction, depression, and stress, among others. Where social and psychological threats were perceived to be strong, testing was actively avoided. The findings of this study are that the decision to voluntarily test for HIV can be explained through a balance of the physical, social, and psychological threats that may be managed or catalysed through an HIV test. When study participants perceived physical threats to outweigh perceived social and psychological threats of living with HIV, they were biased towards testing. When they viewed social and psychological threats to outweigh physical threats, they were biased against testing. This focus on the perceived threats of living with HIV highlights the need to have a comprehensive approach to AIDS and HIV, rather than merely focusing on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of symptoms; enhanced infrastructural resources and the opportunity for mitigation of the physical threats alone do not encourage HIV testing.

Texto completo da fonteThe research comprises an exploratory study of the challenges that offenders face upon release and which contribute to recidivism in the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). The West Coast Medium &lsquo
A&rsquo
Correctional Centre in the Western Cape has been selected as the case study area. Although offenders attend various rehabilitation programmes inside the prison, it has become apparent that upon their release this rehabilitation is not sustained. The qualitative methodology used for this research included semi-structured interviews in order to gather information on the challenges that contribute to recidivism. Offenders, parolees, family members, the Head of Social Reintegration, a social worker, a representative of NICRO, the Chairperson of the Atlantis Community Police Forum, and a spokesperson for SAPS Atlantis were interviewed in order to gather the relevant information. The general findings of the research demonstrate that the adverse socio-economic conditions confronting the offenders after their release from prison are the main barriers to their successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The problem is further compounded by the high incidence of criminal activities within the community environment, the influence of gangsterism, peer pressure and substance abuse. Together, these conditions lead to the re-committing of crime, the re-incarceration of former offenders and, ultimately, to a pattern of recidivism.

The Indian government is aiming to reduce carbon emissions intensity in the power sector through incentivizing the addition of renewables sources into the grid. India has set the goal that at least 40% of total power capacity must be non-fossil fuel-based by 2030 with more ambitious goals expected to be set for 2040 and 2050. To meet the decarbonization goals by the next decades, the central government is promoting a large-scale development of wind turbines and solar photovoltaic power plants. Achieving long-term decarbonization in the Indian power sector presents several challenges to the current electric grid. For example, the current generation mix relies heavily on coal power plants such that integrating solar and wind plants (i.e., variable renewable energy (VRE) sources) adds several layers of economic and technical complexity. Other challenges include improving the national quality of service and reducing local emissions.
The overall effect is amplified by India's rapidly increasing electricity consumption, which has necessitated the build-out of additional capacity to meet the future load. The following thesis analyzes potential pathways to the decarbonization of India's grid by 2037. The study explores 24 different scenarios, each considering different technology costs (solar, wind, and storage), setting different gas prices, and defining different emissions limits. The analysis uses the capacity expansion model "GenX" developed internally at MIT. GenX is a deterministic capacity expansion planning model. The model optimizes generation, storage, and transmission capacity expansion decisions and dispatch of generation and storage resources on an hourly basis to meet the electricity demand in a year, at the lowest cost possible.
The study successfully identifies the trade-offs between system costs, global emissions, and local emissions levels for different scenarios, enabling the assessment of the long-term impact of large infrastructure decisions in the electric power sector. Of the findings: (1) Scenarios without emission limits, continue to be dominated by coal and emissions rose relative to 2017 levels. (2) Scenarios with emissions limits had an increased share of VRE sources, greater than 50% in some scenarios. (3) Some scenarios with high VRE penetration required significant dispatchable capacity that could ramp up suddenly to meet net load, reaching 270 GW in peak load days. (4) Gas-based plants competed directly with storage technologies; both technologies are flexible and can adapt to abrupt changes in VRE generation. However, as storage costs rise, gas plants begin to dominate the generation mix.
There are some challenges in developing new gas plants, as plants cycling increase and the gas fleet is underutilized in some scenarios. The thesis also addresses the policy implications for each scenario. To reduce greenhouse gasses emissions, setting emissions limits can be hard to enforce. Imposing a carbon tax is ideal, although it is hard to set the right price. Setting a non-fossil fuel portfolio standard can not necessarily help reduce emissions to a specific target. Many regulatory changes are required to encourage higher levels of VRE penetration such as promoting better coordination between state and regional system operators, reducing uncertainty in the use of the gas infrastructure, and promoting the development of storage technologies.
