Resumo:

Abstract Few published histories examine Thai Americans and Thai–US migration. This essay addresses that paucity and explores Thai–US migration in the 1960s. A narrative of trauma exists around Southeast Asian US migration history, wherein the United States is positioned as a final destination of hope and settlement. Thai-US migration in the 1960s does not fit into this narrative. This is a case study of Thai students in American universities and Thai employees of the Peace Corps. Thais came to the United States voluntarily, as university students, as professionals, and as tourists. Their journeys to the United States were circular by design. Thai and US Cold War concerns created legal pathways for Thai student migration to the United States to achieve these objectives. These same mechanisms created economic and social incentives to return home: high-paying jobs in a burgeoning economy and the social prestige of international travel. Cold War geo-politics circumvented hostile US immigration policies and permitted Thai students’ entry into the United States, but their pre-existing elite status, potential for personal profit, and civic duties induced them to return. These factors shaped Thai–US migration as temporary and circular.

Mục tiêu nghiên cứu: Mô tả kết cục thai kỳ các trường hợp thai nhỏ so với tuổi thai được chẩn đoán từ 28 đến 36 tuần tại Bệnh viện Phụ sản Thành phố Cần Thơ và khảo sát các yếu tố liên quan đến kết thúc thai kỳ trước 37 tuần và các kết cục xấu ở trẻ sơ sinh. Đối tượng và phương pháp nghiên cứu: Nghiên cứu báo cáo loạt ca thực hiện từ tháng 10/2018 đến tháng 6/2019. Đối tượng nghiên cứu là tất cả phụ nữ mang thai từ 28 đến 36 tuần, được chẩn đoán thai nhỏ hơn so với tuổi thai. Thai nhỏ so với tuổi thai được định nghĩa khi có ít nhất một lần siêu âm mà ước lượng cân nặng thai dưới bách phân vị thứ 10 so với tuổi thai. Kết quả: Có 103 thai phụ được nhận vào nghiên cứu. Mổ lấy thai chiếm tỉ lệ 73,3% (95% KTC 64 - 82) với nguyên nhân chính là suy thai (59,5%). Tuổi thai trung bình lúc sinh là 36 1/7 tuần. Cân nặng lúc sinh trung bình 2.039 ± 562 g. Tỷ lệ trẻ sơ sinh nhẹ cân so với tuổi thai là 72,8% (95% KTC 0,64 - 0,82), tỷ lệ trẻ nhập khoa Hồi sức sơ sinh 34,0% (95% KTC 25 - 43), bệnh lý sơ sinh tổng hợp 41,0% (95% KTC 30 - 50), tỷ lệ thai chết trong tử cung 1,0%, tỷ lệ trẻ chết sau sinh 1,0%. Các yếu tố liên quan kết thúc thai kỳ trước 37 tuần và kết cục thai kỳ xấu ở trẻ sơ sinh gồm thời điểm xuất hiện, mức độ thai nhỏ so với tuổi thai, có kết hợp thiểu ối và bệnh lý rối loạn tăng huyết áp thai kỳ ở mẹ. Kết luận: Thai nhỏ so với tuổi thai có kết cục thai kỳ không thuận lợi. Kết quả nghiên cứu là cơ sở cho quản lý thai các trường hợp thai kỳ nguy cơ, đồng thời cung cấp thông tin cho công tác tư vấn thai phụ.

Resumo:

Abstract Public attire and policies governing it have been a reoccurring feature of Siamese/Thai nation building since the nineteenth century. Clothing has been political instruments for rulers and regime in raising the global status of Siam and Siamese Kings, transforming the Kingdom of Siam into the Nation of Thailand, reviving the popularity of the monarchy, promoting national unity, and provoking political opponents. Their collective efforts during the past one and half century gradually normalised the policing of Thai bodies and increased the state control of public attire in service of the Nation. Today, despite such attire no longer being criminalised, the possible negative political, social, economic, and legal consequences of non-conformity continue to drive Thais to accept the State’s ‘invitation’ to use their bodies in promoting its agenda.

Resumo:

We explore two aspects of English spoken by native speakers of Thai: rhythm and the vowel system, and compare each to the substrate language Thai, to target varieties of English, and to two New Englishes in Asia. Data was collected from a group of Thai speakers who participated in an interview in English, and who read a Thai paragraph, and English words, sentences and a paragraph. For rhythm, we measured the “Pairwise Variability Index” (nPVI, Grabe and Low 2002) and the proportion of time in an utterance devoted to vowels (%V, Ramus, Nespor and Mehler 1999) of Thai read speech, and English spontaneous and read speech. We find that the English of Thai speakers had stress-timed values of high nPVI, like Thai and British English (BrE), and low %V, like BrE but not Thai. Neither measure of rhythm resembled New Englishes’ more syllable-timed lower nPVI and high %V. The vowel system of Thai English revealed transfers of both quality and quantity from the substrate, resulting in a system distinct from British, American, and New Englishes.

Resumo:

Thailand's ‘southern border provinces’ of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat – along with four districts of neighbouring Songkhla – are the site of fiery political violence characterised by daily killings. The area was historically a Malay sultanate, and was only loosely under Thai suzerainty until the early twentieth century. During the twentieth century there was periodic resistance to Bangkok's attempts to suppress local identity and to incorporate this largely Malay-speaking, Muslim-majority area into a predominantly Buddhist nation-state. This resistance proved most intense during the 1960s and 1970s, when various armed groups (notably PULO [Patani United Liberation Organization] and BRN [Barisan Revolusi Nasional]) waged war on the Thai state, primarily targeting government officials and the security forces. In the early 1980s, the Prem Tinsulanond government brokered a deal with these armed groups and proceeded to co-opt the Malay-Muslim elite. By crafting mutually beneficial governance, security and financial arrangements, the Thai state was able largely to placate local political demands.

Abstract This research on the portrayal of women in Thai travel narratives aims to analyze the structure and components of these narratives and examines the language strategies used to present the images of Thai women within the context of travel magazines by combining textual analysis with visual methodology. Altogether 313 narratives from 48 issues of Vacationist, Travel around the World, Neekrung and Osotho magazines published between June 2018 and May 2019 were collected. The study reveals that the meanings of travel and the images of Thai women in the travel magazines through the use of language strategies are formed in a positive way. Solo female travelers are depicted as adventurers, nature lovers and soul searchers. These images indicate individuality and financial independence. On the other hand, female travelers with companions are displayed in association with their roles as wives, mothers and daughters.

This study was conducted with the aims to measure intelligibility of English menus used in Thai restaurants as perceived by Thai and non-Thai speakers and to explore the most salient unintelligible features found on the menus as identified by native Thai speakers. Ninety-six participants agreed to complete an online survey. They were asked to rate their intelligibility level and identify the sources of confusing features found on Thai English menus. Independent t-test and simple descriptive statistics such as mean score, percentage and standard deviation were utilized for data analysis. The results suggest that there is the distinction between intelligibility of restaurant menus rated by Thai and non-Thai speakers. Translation is likely to be the most frequent rated as a source of unintelligible features. The data presented here leads to the conclusion that Thais seems to be harsher in rating intelligibility level. Further implications have also been discussed in this study.

Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu là nhận xét đặc điểm lâm sàng, cận lâm sàng và kết quả sản khoa của những sản phụ song thai và đơn thai có rối loạn tăng huyết áp (THA) trong thai kỳ. Nghiên cứu mô tả cắt ngang trên 166 sản phụ THA trong thai kỳ đẻ tại bệnh viện Phụ Sản Trung ương từ tháng 03/2023 đến tháng 06/2023. Trong 166 sản phụ phù hợp với tiêu chuẩn nghiên cứu, có 37 (23,3%) sản phụ song thai và 129 (77,7%) sản phụ đơn thai. Sản phụ song thai gặp triệu chứng đau đầu ít hơn nhóm đơn thai (2,7% vs 17,8%; p = 0,021). Không có khác biệt về tỷ lệ biến chứng mẹ (sản giật, rau bong non và hội chứng HELLP) giữa hai nhóm. Sản phụ song thai có tỷ lệ đẻ non cao hơn đáng kể so với nhóm đơn thai (73,0% vs 54,3%; p = 0,042). Tuy nhiên, tỷ lệ thai suy và thai chậm phát triển trong tử cung (CPTTTC) của nhóm đơn thai lại cao hơn nhóm song thai với khác biệt có ý nghĩa thống kê (13,2% vs 0%; p = 0,02 và 26,4% vs 10,8%; p = 0,047). Cân nặng sơ sinh của nhóm song thai chủ yếu trong khoảng từ 1500 – 2499 gram (59,5%), trong khi nhóm đơn thai có cân nặng sơ sinh chủ yếu trên 2500 gram (53,5%). Kết quả nghiên cứu của chúng tôi cho thấy THA trong thai kỳ đơn thai có liên quan với các biến chứng cho thai nhi (thai suy và thai CPTTTC) trầm trọng hơn thai kỳ song thai.

The present study focuses on the plant naming system in the Thai language based on 1) Brent Berlin’s general principles of categorization of plants and animals in traditional societies (Berlin, 1974, 1992) which suggest that it is worthwhile to think about a plant taxonomy system on the basis of plant names since the names provide the valid key to folk taxonomy and 2) Lakoff’s central guiding principles of cognitive linguistics (Lakoff and Johnson, 2003 and Lakoff 1987). Data on plant names collected from printed materials are selectively analyzed. The study examines the linguistic structure, folk taxonomy and conceptualization of plant terms in the Thai language. It is found that there exists in the Thai language a complex and practical plant naming system establishing a relationship between language, cognition and culture.

Trong đó, sinh non là nguyên nhân thường gặp nhất làm gia tăng bệnh suất và tử suất sơ sinh ở các thai kỳ đa thai. Resumo:

Amount raised: Bht 3 million (∼USD 90,000) Background and context: Thai Cancer Society (TCS), a new cancer patient support group (PSG) in Thailand, was established in 2016, under the auspices of Heart to Heart Foundation. TCS aims to raise awareness of cancer, promote access to universal cancer care, and coordinated existing cancer-specific PSGs. To promote the Thai Cancer Society, a campaign “Stronger than Cancer: 1,000,000 km for Cancer Patients” was launched in 1 October 2017 and ended on World Cancer Day (WCD), 4 February 2018. Aim: To engage general public to exercise and raise awareness of cancer prevention, TCS, and WCD. Strategy/Tactics: People like to share and this is the era of online content. Thai people likes to donate money as for merit-making and good luck. This campaign created a conditional donation scheme whereby people can only donate if they run or walk. Program process: The campaign created a Facebook page and provide piggy bank to multiple business groups and engage participant to donate, on condition that they have run or walk first then they can donate 1 baht (USD 0.03) per km. They may use Endomondo application to track their running distance, share it on Facebook page, and automatically accumulated at aim to collect 1,000,000 km by WCD. An running event was conducted on WCD to collect piggy bank and donation were concluded. Costs and returns: Around 4400 people signed up for the campaign, >30,000 piggy bank was distributed, and 2185 used Endomondo app and some used other methods to collect their record. The app recorded 1,090,000 km by WCD deadline. Over 3,000,000 Baht was raised within 4 month, and donation continued after the WCD since many people continue to exercise and collect money. The cost of whole program was 1,500,000 Bht, inclusive of the running event. What was learned: This campaign has successfully engage many people to start exercise, using donation as motivation. New mindset on cancer intervention has been cultivated that we can overcome the cancer in 1 way or another.

Resumo:

Abstract Orthographic complexity in Thai is traced diachronically to account for non-linear relationships in the current writing system. As a result of orthographic conservatism over a period of phonological change, an earlier direct phoneme-grapheme isomorphism has shifted to a complex configuration with abstract reinterpretation. What were originally segmental graphemes have acquired hierarchical functions in suprasegmental tone marking. However, aspects of this account have been challenged. A debate has arisen regarding the origins of Thai writing. An early inscription with consistent use of tone marks has been deemed a fake, causing a local uproar. This inscriptional debate is described in some detail as it provides a context appropriate for examining more general questions raised by Share & Daniels (2016) and others regarding multi-dimensional hierarchical depth in orthographic systems. Central to Thai orthographic depth is the claim that early Thai writers marked phonemic tone.
