Functional communication training (FCT) is an effective procedure to teach a functional communication response (FCR) and decrease problem behavior. However, there are limitations to FCT. These limitations include excessive manding (e.g., requesting items at a high rate) and manding at inappropriate times (e.g., requesting attention when caregiver is driving). Multiple schedules using static signals (e.g., colored cards) have been used to decrease these limitations while maintaining appropriate levels of the FCRs and low levels of problem behavior. Moreover, dynamic signals have been used to maintain low levels of problem behavior and appropriate levels of alternative responses outside of a multiple schedule format. Presently, no research has examined the comparison of static and dynamic signals to address the limitations of FCT. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to compare the effects of static and dynamic signals (i.e., Time Timer®) during multiple schedules consisting of reinforcement and extinction components following FCT. Key words: functional communication training, multiple schedules, static signals, Time Timers®

In this thesis, the vehicle routing problem with stochastic, and time dependent, travel times is studied. The stochastic travel times are estimated from historical drive data. The variation of the drive times, as well as that of the variance, during the day was modeled.   The purpose of the thesis was to propose a method of handling the congestion related traffic impediments in an urban setting. Since the majority of times of delivery in the empirical test cases studied correlate with the time period of high traffic load, an efficient and robust handling of such traffic scenarios is of high importance.  It is shown that the stochastic models will shift the estimated arrivals to customers from the more volatile early and late extremes to more central regions of the time window. Previously delivered routes were evaluated both with the standard algorithm and the proposed stochastic algorithm. The difference between the actual drive times and the calculated drive times were analyzed by studying the correlation of the drive times between each customer in the route. It was shown that the routes of the proposed stochastic method increased this correlation. The drive times between nodes where also perturbed with a Gamma distributed noise. The results from the stochastic algorithm showed higher resilience to this disturbance than did the deterministic models.

The consequences of adverse aggregate shocks on households have been repeatedly documented, but far less has been said on the way they are passed over to individuals through the mediation of the household. Does the household contribute in mitigating the effects? Or does the economic shock rather invite itself at the family negociating table? Using the Argentine 2001 economic crisis as a natural experiment, I first show that married women are more likely to enter the labor market if their husband experienced a loss in income, giving credit to the insurance mechanism. Then, I show that the business cycle matters for investments in education, and that long run labor outcomes of Argentine men are persistently affected by the initial conditions upon graduation. Finally, I consider the “Mancession” dimension of the Great Recession in Spain and demonstrate that the resource share accruing to wives for own consumption increases together with the decreasing unemployment gap, which comes in support to the bargaining hypothesis

The thesis presents an ethnographic study of a group of cultural intermediaries at work in a French advertising agency. A theoretical frame drawn from selected works in cultural economy, sociology and philosophy is deployed to address the ill-understood nature of uncertainty in practice-based research on advertising. Practice-based accounts by marketers, sociologists and anthropologists typically suggest that advertising agencies are unstable businesses because they work with unpredictable stakeholders (consumers and above all clients), and because they struggle to establish the legitimacy of their expertise. The problem with this argument, however, is that whilst it insists on the fragmented identities of practitioners locked in their doubts, anxieties and even myths, the everyday nature, experience and ways in which cultural intermediaries deal with such uncertainties are underexplored. During the three-month empirical study multiple research methods were used to collect data, including participant observation, interviews and visual techniques. It was established during fieldwork that uncertainty is best expressed in the awkward relationships practitioners entertain with time. The analysis of these relationships runs through three analysis chapters. One explains how imaginative conversations, practices and uses of objects seek to restrain time-related uncertainties by ―constructing‖ time. The second further analyses this construction by describing the ways in which practitioners unshackle themselves from their feelings of wasting time. The third relates this construction to the ways in which time is incorporated into creative work and sold to clients. The thesis contributes a deeper and temporally-based interpretation of uncertainty to the small number of ethnographic studies of advertising agencies.

We say that (weak/strong) time duality holds for continuous time quasi-birth-and-death-processes if, starting from a fixed level, the first hitting time of the next upper level and the first hitting time of the next lower level have the same distribution. We present here a criterion for time duality in the case where transitions from one level to another have to pass through a given single state, the so-called bottleneck property. We also prove that a weaker form of reversibility called balanced under permutation is sufficient for the time duality to hold. We then discuss the general case.

Systems controlled by embedded computers become indispensable in our lives and can be found in avionics, automotive industry, home appliances, medicine, telecommunication industry, mecatronics, space industry, etc. Fast, accurate and flexible performance estimation tools giving feedback to the designer in every design phase are a vital part of a design process capable to produce high quality designs of such embedded systems.

In the past decade, the limitations of models considering fixed task execution times have been acknowledged for large application classes within soft real-time systems. A more realistic model considers the tasks having varying execution times with given probability distributions. No restriction has been imposed in this thesis on the particular type of these functions. Considering such a model, with specified task execution time probability distribution functions, an important performance indicator of the system is the expected deadline miss ratio of tasks or task graphs.

This thesis proposes two approaches for obtaining this indicator in an analytic way. The first is an exact one while the second approach provides an approximate solution trading accuracy for analysis speed. While the first approach can efficiently be applied to monoprocessor systems, it can handle only very small multi-processor applications because of complexity reasons. The second approach, however, can successfully handle realistic multiprocessor applications. Experiments show the efficiency of the proposed techniques.

The concept of time in physics underwent significant changes in the decades following World War II. This dissertation considers several ways in which American physicists grappled with these changes, analyzing the extent to which philosophical methods and questions played a role in physicists' engagement with time. Two lines of questioning run through the dissertation. The first asks about the professional identities of postwar American physicists in relation to philosophy, as exemplified by their engagement with the concept of time. The second analyzes the heterogeneous nature of time in physics, and the range of presuppositions and assumptions that have constituted this "fundamental" physical concept. The first chapter looks to the development of atomic clocks and atomic time standards from 1948-1958, and the ways in which new timekeeping technologies placed concepts such as “clock”, “second,” and “measure of time” in a state of flux. The second chapter looks to the experimental discovery of CP violation by particle physicists in the early 1960s, raising questions about nature of time understood as the variable “t” in the equations of quantum mechanics. The third chapter considers attempts to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity in the late 1960s, which prompted physicists to question the “existence” of time in relation to the universe as a whole. In each episode considered, physicists engaged with the concept of time in a variety of ways, revealing a multiplicity of relationships between physics, philosophy, and time. Further, in each case physicists brought a unique set of assumptions to their concepts of time, revealing the variety ways in which fundamental conceptsfunctioned and changed in late twentieth century physics. The result is a heterogeneous picture of the practice of physics, as well as one of physics’ most basic concepts.

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is the oldest and largest hospital in New England as well as the original and largest teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School. The neuroscience units experience patient flow issues similar to those observed throughout MGH, including high bed utilization and long intraday patient wait times. This project focuses on the neuroscience units as a microcosm of the hospital. MGH consistently operates near capacity. Patients from the emergency department, the perioperative environment, intensive care units (ICUs) and other sources compete for beds. The admitting department manages the bed assignment process across MGH. Assignments are often made without access to all relevant information, such as expected admission, surgery and discharge timing. As a result of common procedures, patients are frequently assigned to a bed before they are clinically ready to move. Our analysis reveals that suboptimal bed assignment and patient transfer processes are among the leading root causes of intraday patient delays. The primary objective of the project is to develop a bed assignment policy to reduce intraday patient wait times. The policy consists of a bed assignment algorithm and enabling bed management processes. To account for patient acuity, the algorithm segments patients by movement (e.g., ED-to-ICU). The target maximum wait for each segment is the acceptable wait length (AWL). The algorithm ranks patients based on their ready times and the AWLs, and assigns beds primarily on a just-in-time (JIT) basis. The enabling bed management processes include small-scale early discharge and early transfer interventions to better align the intraday timing of demand for inpatient beds with available capacity. A simulation of neuroscience patient flow is used to evaluate different approaches. The model shows that adoption of the JIT policy would increase the percentage of patients who experience bed waits within the AWL for all movement types. Predicted bed waits for patients who require ICU-level care would be 30 minutes or less for 90% of ED patients and 95% of OR patients (improvements from historical baselines of 44% and 91%, respectively). Predicted bed waits for transfers to floor beds would be two hours or less for 81% of ED patients and 93% of OR patients (improvements from historical baselines of 63% and 84%, respectively). The solution significantly reduces intraday patient wait times without a major increase in hospital capacity.

Armstrong, Paul Walter. "Fact or fiction : the problem of bias in Government Statistical Service estimates of patient waiting times". Thesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), 2000. http://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/682277/.

Resumo:
The cumulative likelihood of admission estimated for any given 'time-since-enrolment' depends on how we define membership of the population 'at-risk' and on how we handle right and left censored waiting times. As a result, published statistics will be biased because they assume that the waiting list is both stationary and closed and exclude all those not yet or never to be admitted. The cumulative likelihood of admission within three months was estimated using the Government Statistical Service method and compared with estimates which relaxed the assumption of stationarity and reflected variation in the numbers recruited to, and admitted from, the waiting list each quarter. The difference between the two estimates ranged from +5.5 to -9.1 percentage points among 11 Orthopaedic waiting lists in South Thames Region. In the absence of information on 'times-to-admission', exact 'times-since-enrolment' were extracted from Hospital Episode Statistics and assumed to be similarly distributed. In the absence of information on 'times-to-competing-event', the number of competing events falling in each waiting time category was estimated by differencing. A period lifetable was constructed using these approximations, census counts, counts of the number of new recruits and estimates of the number 'reset-to-zero' each quarter. The results support the view that the method used by the Government Statistical Service overestimates the cumulative likelihood of elective admission among those listed. The Government Statistical Service calculates the cumulative likelihood of admission within three months (range: 0.62-0.27) conditional on the fact of admission. Multiplying by the unconditional likelihood of being admitted (range: 0.93-0.31) estimates the cumulative likelihood of admission within three months among those listed (range: 0.55-0.12) and gives a rather different ranking of waiting list performance among 34 Orthopaedic waiting lists in South Thames Region.

Resumo:
Between 1969 and 1980 Edvard Radzinskii wrote three ‘historico-political’ plays which were later published as a trilogy entitled ‘Theatre of the Times …’. This thesis attempts to unravel the nature of time in the trilogy and invokes Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion about the forms of time and the chronotope in literary narratives to do that. Bakhtinian concept of the chronotope provides a suitable strategy for reading a trilogy that aims to re-present ‘real’ time, place and human beings. The concept also provides a vantage point from where the trilogy can be read both from within the time-space of its main protagonists and from that of its author, readers, performers and spectators. ¶ Both ‘Dialogues with Socrates' and 'Lunin …’ are structured around the chronotope of the prison which is associated with the chronotope of the acropolis in ‘Dialogues with Socrates’ and with the chronotope of the masked-ball in ‘Lunin …’. In ‘Theatre of the Times of Nero and Seneca’ the circus-theatre functions as the main chronotope. All these chronotopes serve as plot-constitutive devices and provide appropriate space in which the lives and times of the main protagonists can be adequately re-presented. However, the use of the concept of the chronotope in reading the trilogy does not imply that it can be read meaningfully only from within the time-space of its protagonists. The trilogy reconstructs the historical time-space but also engages in a substantial way with contemporary Soviet reality. This is achieved through an interaction between literary and real chronotopes. There is little doubt that most Soviet readers, performers and spectators negotiatied the chronotopes of the prison and the circus-theatre and the motifs of show-trial and execution from within their own time-space, their own historical experience. The thesis discusses a large number of reviews published in Soviet media to show that most critics read the trilogy from within the discourses about positive hero and socialist realism, because of which Socrates and Lunin were also turned into positive heroes. ¶ One of the most intriguing aspect of the three plays is the ‘play within a play’ structure which achieves its maximum potential in the final play of the trilogy where it is combined with the theme of metamorphoses and multiple role playing. The trilogy, like Pirandello’s trilogy about theatre, is able to foreground its own theatricality and explore the role of theatricality and role playing in and outside theatre. In ‘Theatre of the Times of Nero and Seneca’ the boundary between role playing in life and in theatre becomes so blurred that history begins to resemble the writing and staging of a play. ¶ Apart from exploring the nature of theatricality, the trilogy also questions the conventions of its genre. The three plays do not follow the conventional framing devices employed by dramatic texts and foreground the presence of a mediating narrator. This ‘novelisation’, is more evident in ‘Lunin …’ in which the frequent use of verbs in the past tense in the extra-dialogic text can be linked to the presence of a mediating narrator.

Dubasi, Mohana Asha Latha. "Timed Refinement for Verification of Real-Time Object Code Programs". Diss., North Dakota State University, 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/31372.

Resumo:
Real-time systems such as medical devices, surgical robots, and microprocessors are safety-critical applications that have hard timing constraint. The correctness of real-time systems is important as the failure may result in severe consequences such as loss of money, time and human life. These real-time systems have software to control their behavior. Typically, this software has source code which is converted to object code and then executed in safety-critical embedded devices. Therefore, it is important to ensure that both source code and object code are error-free. When dealing with safety-critical systems, formal verification techniques have laid the foundation for ensuring software correctness. Refinement based technique in formal verification can be used for the verification of real-time interrupt-driven object code. This dissertation presents an automated tool that verifies the functional and timing correctness of real-time interrupt-driven object code programs. The tool has been developed in three stages. In the first stage, a novel timed refinement procedure that checks for timing properties has been developed and applied on six case studies. The required model and an abstraction technique were generated manually. The results indicate that the proposed abstraction technique reduces the size of the implementation model by at least four orders of magnitude. In the second stage, the proposed abstraction technique has been automated. This technique has been applied to thirty different case studies. The results indicate that the automated abstraction technique can easily reduce the model size, which would in turn significantly reduce the verification time. In the final stage, two new automated algorithms are proposed which would check the functional properties through safety and liveness. These algorithms were applied to the same thirty case studies. The results indicate that the functional verification can be performed in less than a second for the reduced model. The benefits of automating the verification process for real-time interrupt-driven object code include: 1) the overall size of the implementation model has reduced significantly; 2) the verification is within a reasonable time; 3) can be applied multiple times in the system development process.

with delays on the road and variabilities introduced by the major participants in the process, ie: distribution centers, drivers, etc. These sources of variability also make it difficult to measure the impact changes in transit time have on on-time performance. This paper focuses on trying to identify indicators of variability and incorporates them into quantile regression forest, a black box forecasting model, that will provide estimated scheduled transit times for a given probability of on-time arrival at the destination. With the use of Amazon's Q1 & Q2 2013 linehaul data, an analysis on performance trends based on length of haul were categorized to develop an understanding linehauls in North America. The outbound transportation team at Amazon faces the complex trade off between providing a sufficient amount of scheduled transit time to ensure ontime delivery to destination and the utilization rate of a truck. The ability to quantify how changes in scheduled transit time impact the performance of a particular linehaul allows transportation managers to assess this trade off. The paper explores a machine learning regression technique called quantile regression forests. The model was developed in R using the quantregforest package. It incorporates numerous factors about linehaul including: origin, destination, historical reporting on sources of late to arrivals, time to depart from origin and time of departure. The strengths of this black box model are in its ability to handle a large amount of data and continuously update its predicting structure to provide more accurate recommendations. Quantile regression forests also enable the user to specify the ontime performance percentage, p, that he/she wants the model to predict based on historical data. The final model at p = 95% provided a weight mean absolute percent error of 4.57% and a root mean square error of 2.22%. A four-week pilot was conducted to validate these predictions and the results are discussed.

This thesis brings together work I have published in the last five years in academic journals and edited book collections. All the material presented in the thesis, much of it substantially rewritten, will appear in the trilogy I have been working on since my last published book, Radio, Television and Modern Life (Blackwell 1996). The organising structure of the thesis and its substantive concerns corresponds with that of the three books that will come out of it. The form and content of the thesis, and its relation to the books, is discussed in some detail in its introduction. Its fundamental concern is with human time which I have explored in all my writings since I began research thirty years ago, with my late friend and colleague David Cardiff, into the early history of the British Broadcasting Corporation. The medium of radio is time. Historiography deals with past time. The academic work of writing history on the other, and the temporality of radio and television on the one hand, are the first two themes of this thesis which shows that the orders of time in which they work are divergent rather than convergent. The third section of the thesis attempts their reconciliation through the recovery of meaningful time.

The work of contemporary Atlantic Canadian filmmaker William O. MacGillivray is a set of confrontations. His five fiction feature films investigate, perhaps even recalibrate, conventionally understood ideas of centre and margin, time and space, and most pointedly, traditional and modern. What MacGillivray presents in his work is not, in the manner of George Grant, a lament for a traditional or old and noble world locked inexorably in the processes of technological erasure. Instead, echoing the actively ambivalent response to technology-induced change advanced by Harold Innis and others, what the films reveal is a range of possible alternative critical positions within the experience of modern lite in contemporary Atlantic Canada. As Carlos Fuentes reminds us, this does not necessarily entail 'sacrificing the past in favour of the new,' as much of the rhetoric surrounding notions of the modern insists, but rather the 'maintaining, comparing, and remembering values we have created, making them modern so as not lose the value of the modern.' ln a sense, this process is about remembering time. Fundamentally, in creating rich, complex narratives about a part of Canada facing considerable and rapid change, MacGillivray is making his own cinematic 'plea for time' in his confrontations with notions of what constitutes a modern existence. It is also a plea for space, to remember that as there are 'different modern times' there are also 'different modern spaces.'

Since congestion leads to variations in travel time which gives a variation in the traffic flow, it is interesting to estimate the traffic flow in larger cities where cars drive in a limited space. In order to estimate the traffic flow, different traffic models are usually used. These models often use volume-delay functions which calculate the travel times for each link depending on the current traffic flow. However, in these models, the process for reaching equilibrium can be time consuming and it is hard to calibrate the volume-delay functions for a road network with a large set of links. Instead, we assume that it is relatively simply to measure or collect historical time-dependent travel times on a large set of links. With this assumption, a method that uses time-dependent route choice sets and time-dependent travel times in order to estimate time-dependent route flows, is developed. In this thesis, the method was applied to Stockholm County where it is interesting to study the route choice since congestion occurs in the area which generate variations in travel time. In order to estimate time-dependent route flows, a time-sliced OD-matrix was created by dividing the matrix for the peak hour using two different time-slicing distributions. The time-dependent route choice set with time-dependent travel times was created by using an existing route planning tool. These routes were mapped to the links in a road network in order to estimate link flows. The mapping was done by using map matching and a shortest path algorithm. Route shares were decided by using a method that splits the demand equally among the routes in the route choice set for an OD-pair, and with a logit model that takes travel time into account with the assumption that the travel time can affect a traveler’s route choice. The evaluation of the resulting link flows was done by comparing these link flows with observed link flows using different time-slicing distributions and route share models. Furthermore, the method’s resulting link flows was evaluated against the resulting link flows from a scenario where all travelers are assumed to choose the shortest path, in terms of free flow travel time, between each OD-pair. The developed method can estimate link flows so that 27.9 % of the links have a GEH value less than 5, which can be compared to the commonly used acceptance criteria of 85 %. This shows that the method needs to be developed further in order to achieve link flow estimations that fulfills the acceptance criteria. Even though the overall result show that the developed method does not fulfill the acceptance criteria, the method works well on some individual links. Furthermore, the resulting link flows from the developed method match the observed link flows better than the resulting link flows from the scenario where all travelers are assumed to choose the shortest path.

The current thesis considers the issue of state estimation of condition systems, a form of petri net with signal inputs and outputs. In previous research the problem of unobservability due to progress confusion was identified, in the presence of which state estimation is not possible. Here we introduce the notion of Time Condition Systems", a class of condition systems that uses timing information from condition models to overcome state estimation problem caused by progress confusion. To make use of the timing information in the plant model, a procedure called Exploded Time Plant" is synthesized. This procedure makes the plant model an observable model. It is proved that this procedure does not alter the structural and temporal behavior of the plant model and the plant maintains its integrity. The time plant(s) and the corresponding Exploded time plant(s) are subsequently used to develop observer(s) and controller(s) for Time condition models.

Resumo:
Real-time Embedded Systems (RTESs) have an increasing role in controlling society infrastructures that we use on a day-to-day basis. RTES behaviour is not based solely on the interactions it might have with its surrounding environment, but also on the timing requirements it induces. As a result, ensuring that an RTES behaves correctly is non-trivial, especially after adding time as a new dimension to the complexity of the testing process. This research addresses the problem of testing RTESs from Timed Automata (TA) specification by the following. First, a new Priority-based Approach (PA) for testing RTES modelled formally as UPPAAL timed automata (TA variant) is introduced. Test cases generated according to a proposed timed adequacy criterion (clock region coverage) are divided into three sets of priorities, namely boundary, out-boundary and in-boundary. The selection of which set is most appropriate for a System Under Test (SUT) can be decided by the tester according to the system type, time specified for the testing process and its budget. Second, PA is validated in comparison with four well-known timed testing approaches based on TA using Specification Mutation Analysis (SMA). To enable the validation, a set of timed and functional mutation operators based on TA is introduced. Three case studies are used to run SMA. The effectiveness of timed testing approaches are determined and contrasted according to the mutation score which shows that our PA achieves high mutation adequacy score compared with others. Third, to enhance the applicability of PA, a new testing tool (GeTeX) that deploys PA is introduced. In its current version, GeTeX supports Control Area Network (CAN) applications. GeTeX is validated by developing a prototype for that purpose. Using GeTeX, PA is also empirically validated in comparison with some TA testing approaches using a complete industrial-strength test bed. The assessment is based on fault coverage, structural coverage, the length of generated test cases and a proposed assessment factor. The assessment is based on fault coverage, structural coverage, the length of generated test cases and a proposed assessment factor. The assessment results confirmed the superiority of PA over the other test approaches. The overall assessment factor showed that structural and fault coverage scores of PA with respect to the length of its tests were better than the others proving the applicability of PA. Finally, an Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) decision-making framework for our PA is developed. The framework can provide testers with a systematic approach by which they can prioritise the available PA test sets that best fulfils their testing requirements. The AHP framework developed is based on the data collected heuristically from the test bed and data collected by interviewing testing experts. The framework is then validated using two testing scenarios. The decision outcomes of the AHP framework were significantly correlated to those of testing experts which demonstrated the soundness and validity of the framework.

Resumo:
Although time has been seriously contemplated by various philosophies of the Western tradition, it remains an underdeveloped topic in Lacanian studies. This thesis attempts to provide a comprehensive elaboration of the notion of time in Jacques Lacan’s work and to develop an argument to show how it contributes to our understanding of subjectivity. By working through various presentations of time in Lacan’s writings, this thesis puts forward the idea of dual temporality and demonstrates how it supports Lacan’s overall theoretical position. Chapter one introduces the idea of dual temporality through a critical examination of Lacan’s “Logical Time” essay. It is shown that Lacan’s “perfect solution” to the prisoner’s dilemma is logically flawed. It constructs an imaginary temporal experience that covers the unresolved tension between two temporal registers, which I name Real time and Symbolic time respectively. The two independent temporal registers are further explored in the context of the Real body and the Symbolic order. Chapter Four discusses how the fundamental desynchrony between these two temporal registers initiates the process of subject-formation, which is symptomatic in its essence. Chapter five develops a new epistemology of sexed subjectivity built upon a fresh reading of the relationship between time and sexual difference. Whereas others have thought that time is an intrinsic human experience, the result of my work is to show that, on the contrary, time in Lacan’s work is characterised by otherness and alterity, experienced by the subject as foreign and alienating. It is argued that the very split nature of the Lacanian subject shall be understood through time that is split in itself.

Resumo:
The proper composition of independently developed components of an embedded real- time system is complicated due to the fact that besides the functional behavior also the non-functional properties and in particular the timing have to be compatible. Nowadays related compatibility problems have to be addressed in a cumbersome integration and configuration phase at the end of the development process, that in the worst case may fail. Therefore, a number of formal approaches have been developed, which try to guide the upfront decomposition of the embedded real-time system into components such that integration problems related to timing properties can be excluded and that suitable configurations can be found. However, the proposed solutions require a number of strong assumptions that can be hardly fulfilled or the required analysis does not scale well. In this paper, we present an approach based on timed automata that can provide the required guarantees for the later integration without strong assumptions, which are difficult to match in practice. The approach provides a modular reasoning scheme that permits to establish the required guarantees for the integration employing only local checks, which therefore also scales. It is also possible to determine potential configuration settings by means of timed game synthesis.

Queer Creatures, Queer Times makes a critical intervention in queer theory and queer poetics through a combination of critical and creative approaches to explore how posthumanist thought and animal studies might correct a blindspot in current critical work on queer experience and texts. Queer theory tends to neglect non/human subjects, yet an ecological and posthumanist critique helps to trouble its humanist bias as well as its overly neat ties to constructivist and performative notions of selfhood. I argue that modern lyric poetry, in emergence during the cultural transmission of Darwinian precepts and the social invention of the homosexual, is uniquely situated to challenge the exclusivist principles that underlie specieisim, Social Darwinism, and heterosexism. While queer theory tends to overlook evolution in the construction of subjectivity and sexuality, I posit that such tendencies diminish opportunities for thinking through non-coherent selfhood and the radical contingency of beings upon other life forms. Accompanying my critical essays on three modernist queer poets, Djuna Barnes, Elizabeth Bishop, and Marianne Moore, are my poetics essay entitled "Towards a Poetics of the Animal" and my poetry manuscript Queer Fish. Both poetic texts explore non-dominant forms of queer relation between animals and humans.

Literature in express times: The book as an object, which has occupied a canonic place since Gutenberg s invention, has been going through a revolution in the last few years due to the expansion of the audiovisual mediums and the digital technology. At first confronted with some resistance, the interaction between printed texts and screens has become, in some cases, profitable – if not for the intellectual product at least for the consumption good - or at least inevitable. The transformations happens in a speed up pace, and movements are made towards the desacralization of the book and the expansion of the reading practices. A new kind of cultural good comes to sight, designed to expand itself to the different spheres of the symbolic goods and entertainment market, often displacing the book of its prominent position while inserting it in a multiplying chain. In this sliding and interchanging process some transformations can be verified in the cultural sphere: alterations in the cultural products hierarchy, approximation between editorial and audiovisual culture, the transmidiatic product and the so-called multimedia author. Having this contemporaneous scenery as a background, we intend to analyze the place occupied by the literature in accordance to the expansion of the symbolic goods market, the hegemony of the audiovisual and the new channels of circulation of texts that have emerged with the digital technologies. To approach this matter, we take Amores Expressos as our object, a book collection produced by RT Features and edited by Companhia das Letras, that consists of a transmidiatic project, in consonance with a society strictly audiovisual, market-based and express.

Hard Times Come Again is a musical composition consisting of seven songs composed for alto voice, baritone voice, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, mandolin, banjo, guitar, and piano. In totality it is approximately thirty minutes in duration, and individual songs range from three to six minutes in duration. The songs take their text from poems constructed by the composer, along with poet Bren Simmers, from oral history of the Great Depression. The musical style of the composition draws on both folk music and classical music influences, with specific sub-genres, such as bluegrass, honky-tonk, and minimalism, also referenced. The written document puts the musical composition into personal and historical context. Aspects of the author's personal musical experience are discussed in the first chapter in relation to both folk music and classical music. A brief discussion of North American folk music as well as classical music that has drawn on folk music influences follows in the second chapter. The third chapter discusses musical traits of the composition including form, text, harmonic language, rhythm, and texture, and the fourth chapter includes a brief aesthetic statement. A program note and a complete musical score of the composition are included as appendices.

This research aims at providing methods in analyzing and estimating the taxi times of aircraft at airports, which are expected to be an important element for reducing taxiing delay and consequent excess fuel consumption and environmental costs. The proposed model involves a set of regression equations to model the taxi-out and taxi-in times at airports. The estimated results can be used to calculate the nominal taxi times, which are essential measures for evaluating the taxiing delays at airports. Given the outcomes of the regression model, an iterative algorithm is developed to predict taxi times. A case study at LGA shows that the proposed algorithm demonstrates higher accuracy in comparison to other algorithms in existing literature.

The study had a foundation of feminist theory about patriarchy and gender theory with a contribution of research about race and its impact on patriarchy.

None of the three papers were fully gender equal. Even though Svenska Dagbladet was found to be the most gender equal when it came to the number of women represented all of the newspapers examined showed patriachal structures since women more often than men were described as victimes, trivialized, incompetent and inferior.  People with a race other than white were in minority but patriarchy seems to be a stronger form of oppression than racism. White men were in majority and were less opressed than other groups and were because of that most in favour of the newspapers symbolic powers.

A flexible workforce or a versatile machine is employed to perform various types of operations. Often these resources are associated with setups. Whenever a worker or machine switches from processing one type of operation to another a setup time may be required although several operations of a same type can be processed in succession after a single setup. The presence of setups gives rise to the problem of choosing batch sizes that are neither too large nor too small. In the last one and a half decade, many researchers have addressed the problem of scheduling with batching. A majority of articles assumes that there is only one type of scarce resource, which is typically machine. Often there can be two scarce resources such as a worker and a machine or a machine and a tool. We propose a resource constrained scheduling model with a single operator and two or more machines. Whenever the operator changes machine, a setup time is required that may be sequence dependent or sequence independent. We consider the two cases of an open shop and a flow shop. In the open shop case, the order in which a job visits the machines is unrestricted. In the flow shop case, every job must visit the machines in the same order. We consider various scheduling objectives. For variable number of machines, many cases are intractable. We discuss some dominance properties that narrow down the search for an optimal schedule. We present a dynamic programming approach which solves a large number of cases. The running time of the dynamic program is polynomial for a fixed number of machines. For the case of two machines, we show that the dominance properties have a nice interpretation. We develop some algorithms and justify their use by establishing running times, comparing the running times with those of the existing algorithms, and testing the performance of the algorithms.
