Schreiner, Florian. "Laut, Ton, Stärke". Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/16126.
Historically the work is framed by two dates, by the physiological experiments of hearing and the mise en scène of a massed and sonic attack in so called „real auditory perspective“ of the 1930s. The first chapter starts with the tragedic and long living psychiatric case Antonin Artaud, who moves away from clarity of sounds to phones, gestures and crying. Such experiments give cause for a fundamental rethinking of meaning in the sense of picture, and leads to the second chapter which argues in more detail for the lap of our sonic understanding of the world. This way speeds up to an „acoutic turn“ by a retour to the biological grounds of sonic perception. The physiological and acoustic inquiries of Hermann von Helmholtz fit here to the ground for him being starting point of what will later be called „technische Akustik“. The third chapter bridges Europe´s early Telefunken-years with the United States and their chief acousticians at the legendary Bell Laboratories, and seeks finally for light in scientific amnesia against progress and control, or what the germans call „Betriebsamkeit“ and „Gestell.“ (Heidegger)
Tsampa, Anatoli. "Wort Ton Bild Welt". Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/18053.
The dissertation explores the evolution of the concept of the Total Work of Art (ʹGesamtkunstwerkʹ) as well as its actuality, feasibility and necessity in the form of a modern cinematic Gesamtkunstwerk. Starting point is the aesthetic theory and praxis of the Early German Romanticism, in which the concept is rooted. An extensive consideration and analysis of the concept in both its aesthetic and socio-political dimension as developed in the writings and works of Richard Wagner aims to define its essential structural features and to set the standard for a ʹpositiveʹ contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk beyond its ideological abuse. Key is the examination of how and to what extend the sound and colour feature film constitutes a legit artistic medium for the application of the concept as well as how its sociopolitical facet translates within the global era.

The united of the first and the thirs kzantian critics, going around the blinding moutain of the second critic (ethical practice) allows discovering an originary power of mind: sensibility or recptivity (empfanglichkeit) to an undeterminated suprasensible =x (idea of liberty). This power, that kant is exposing in the exprerience of sublime, is the conly way of understanding historical experiences or, exactly said, those times where is being delimitated a sensibility to events which are marking history. Historical event can be told about a phenomenon which, while being the effect of an historical and determinated cause, is the sign and the signature of a pure beginning, of a pure present which is not making history, but is immemorial. Of the arriving only the tone (enthusiastic and or melancolic) of the sensibility of an unknown and clandestine community can give a sign or evidence and can attest that history is going
Haller, Silja. "Wort-Ton-Gestaltung in der Sinfonik Gustav Mahlers". Universität Potsdam, 2012. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2012/5556/.
Focal point of this thesis is the detailed analysis of selected aspects of the relationship between music and text in Gustav Mahler’s vocal-instru-mental symphonies. Mahler’s elaboration of programmatic intentions functions as background. The composer obviously used the specific quality of music which is able to make spiritual or immaterial facts clearer than language (which here often has to switch over to symbolism). The variety of the text interpretation by Mahler’s music (on which the analyses are focused) shows distinct differences: from a relatively simple setting to music-character to an intense amalgam of music and semantics of the words. An important result of the analyses is the approximate proportionality between independency of Mahler’s music from the text’s formal parameters and intensity of the musical exegesis of the words. The more the music tends to elaborate the semantics, the more decreases the materiality of language. In this context the semantics-music-amalgam in the final movement of Das Lied von der Erde represents an unique example. Ultimately Mahler’s music supplies the denotation of the text semantics. This intermixture shows previously – in the history of development of vocal symphonic tradition – not heard intensity.

Roberts, David. "L'orthographe du ton en kabiyè au banc d'essai". Paris, INALCO, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008INAL0006.
The debate about the representation of tone in Africain languages has long been dominated by the Phonemic Principle, with the result that the classic method has been to mark tone exhaustively with accents. But this approach has many difficulties. There is an ongoing debate about what level of orthographic depth constitutes an optimal representation. Then accent overload is likely to trigger lateral masking. Moreover, it is far from clear that the functional load of tone in many of these languages is high enough to warrant exhaustive marking. Thus, in many languages tone is not marked, resulting in a profusion of homographs which in turn leads to miscues and incomprehension. My hypothesis is that there is a "third way", a meaning-based approach which highlights the grammar. I will undertake a frequency analysis and a miscue analysis in the standard orthography of kabiyè (gur, Togo). The resulting grammatical orthography will be tested against a tone orthography in a quantitative experience. The fact that writers perform faster and with greater accuracy in the grammatical orthography than they do in the tone orthography suggests that they have an innate awareness of morphological structure which exceeds that of phonology. Writers master weaving complex sporadic characters into the fabric of the standard orthography better than they do adding multiple strokes of the pen across its upper layer. May these discoveries open the door to a greater degree of creativity in the development of emerging African orthographies in comparison with that has traditionally been permitted within the tight constraints of phonemic analysis with its rigid insistence on the Phonemic Principle

This thesis is about the interaction between composition, notation and interpretation and what occurs between the fields with an extended notation.
The purpose of my thesis is to examine the possibilities to
thoroughly describe and map the sounding samples through composition prototypes.
The thesis has a qualitative approach, and the empirical material consists of different documents about notation and from interviews with musicians and students about the instruments used in the thesis.
It also consists of 17 compositions recorded at Örebro University School of Music as an appendix.
The analysis shows that the context in which the symbols are found, play an important role in performing them. It also shows that the performers are rooted in a traditional way of performing.

Robert pinget's novels are derivated from the tone, and the punctuation, far form only being a formal subordinate part, becomes the major enuciative agent of it. The aesthetic of that mediation results from its having the determination of that tone passed through an undetermination of the founts of speech and of the borders between statements: operated by a selective obliteration, a redistribution and a pulverisation of the code of the punctuation. But if the representation is thrown into confusion, it is only aimed at a voice being heard in pinget's letter: the lack of differenciation of the "they speak" predisposes in an "it speaks" of the voice, since the reader commits himself to bear it
Compaore, Laetitia. "Essai d'analyse de la prosodie du Mooré : ton et intonation". Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCC170/document.
This dissertation describes the role of prosody in the organization of oral speech in Moore (a tone language spoken in Burkina Faso). It investigates the realization of intonation as a sign of prosodic structure in an African tone language. The main problem dealt in this study is: how does intonation work in moore, a tone language in which tone has already an important phonological role? The aim of the analysis is to explain the realization of tone and intonation in order to identify a prosodic structure which will account for the prosodic organization in moore. The theoretical framework is based on P. Martin’s theory of intonation in romance languages (2009, 2013, and 2015). Of course amendments were necessary to adapt it to moore. This dissertation is made up of two sections; the first one is dedicated to defining some important notions of the study and presenting general characteristics of moore. In the second section, experiments were carried out to address the main issues. The phonetic realization of tone was first examined. This study confirms that the relative height of the pitch is the main acoustic parameter used to distinguish the two types of tones in moore. Then the analysis of the relation between tone and intonation reveals that the realization of tones is affected by intonation especially at prosodic boundaries. When downstep is applied, tonal rules determine the realization of tones. However, the domain of the downstep is also marked out by prosodic boundaries (place of the realization of intonation). Finally, based on the identification of prosodic events, the study of moore oral speech (both spontaneous and reading speech) organization shows that acoustic parameters such as: duration of pauses, final syllable lengthening and F0 variations are found with perceived boundaries. The analysis of reading speech reveals that F0 resetting and variations of boundary syllables duration are the major indices which mark the limits of prosodic phrases. In spontaneous speech, the results suggest the existence of a trading relationship between pauses duration and boundary syllables duration. Therefore, the prosodic organization of utterances in moore derives from the combination of F0 variations and the trading relationship

This doctoral dissertation is concerned with a group of languages belonging to the southern-eastern division of the mande family. Taking several languages into account leads to a much more comprehensive view of the interactions between the vocalic, consonantal, syllabic and tonetic systems than would be possible with a single language. A first section is devoted to the descriptive and distributional features of these systems, as well as to a survey of classification problems, including alexico-statistical analysis. The second section opens with a detailled acoutic analysis of the tonetic systems, leading to a description of tonal rules at the sentence level. A companion volume contains a comprehensive selection of the survey materials (wsord and sentence lists, transcripts and translations of dialogues and tales), as well as a large sample of documented fundamental frequency curves

The creation of national identity through the printed publication was historically important in developing French economic and cultural dominance. Luxury periodical publications such as Gazette du Bon Ton followed in the footsteps of historic predecessors in promoting French fashion and standards of taste to elite audiences at home and abroad, and editors such as Lucien Vogel, who positioned Gazette du Bon Ton alongside the exquisitely produced, influential fine art, decorative art, and design guides of the time, became powerful voices reporting on fashion and appropriate social etiquette during a time of profound social change.
The separation and cataloguing of individual pochoir from Gazette du Bon Ton has, over time, shifted the publication from rare book libraries to print, photography, and drawing collections and the classification of Gazette du Bon Ton pochoir as ephemera. This shift has limited our understanding of the complete publication. Prior research of Gazette du Bon Ton has focused primarily on the visual merits of fashion pochoir. This thesis attempts to redress that imbalance by analyzing the material components of Gazette du Bon Ton and reconsidering the vision of powerful editors such as Lucien Vogel in directing social narratives reflective of their time.

Purpose: To analyse the guitar methodology on the basis of my experience from the last five years with my students. The concept was: let the students write and record their own songs. This study wants to find out how the students experience this way of learning. Do they feel that they have achieved a new level on their instrument or was it just a few moments of fun? Results: The students have a need to practice what they learn in theory. If the education leans towards the theoretical, the concept of what they have learned won’t seem useful and they will have gaps the music education.By letting the student write and record their own songs, the needs will be fulfilled and the students take more responsibility for their education. The ways to knowledge are countless and this is one of them. Students as well as teachers will have a win-win situation, both on a pedagogical and a personal level.

Belonging to a generation that had learnt rhetorics, Péguy revolted himself against such formal writing pattern, while remaining faithful to the spirit of ancient humanities. His reaction is mostly interesting, in so far as it takes place among the modern definitions of a style of one's own, even if inspired by the classical taste, but in opposition to the manner of the positivists. Péguy also rejected the eloquence of politicians. He refused the self-assurance of ready-made demonstrations. But his anxiety and perpetual research didn't imply a lack of eloquence. Influenced by the everlasting notion of simplicity, he converted the rhetorical convenance into an ethic as well as esthetic accuracy. Péguy's paradoxical way back to the sources of literature leads to an inventive representation of reality. Then, the style tends to reveal the secret order of reality. Indeed he intends to render its forms and dimensions to a world in which he feels surrounded by platitude and abstraction. The ancient criterium of aptum is induced to convey the hidden greatness of each piece of reality that becomes involved into the dramatic search for the origin and the godly voice. Hence he takes part in the revival of spiritual literature and of the sublime at the beginning of XXth century, in being familiar with the divine. Péguy's style become a figure, really incarned, far from the lethal power of the letter and of an enclosing autonomy

This study tries to show the major role played by the notion of blood in the National Socialist ideology. The underlying question is whether that blood was primarily conceived in a scientific way, as the primacy granted to human biology leads one to believe, or whether it was not rather a matter for a blind belief in ethnic belonging. A historical account of the notion of blood in German thinking is followed by a study of the way the main National Socialist ideologists viewed interracial struggles. That theoretical anthropology is then compared with the racial political measures enforced by the Third Reich. It therefore appears that National Socialism, as a political religion, was all the more murderous as it assumed a scientific character
