Kumi-uchi, literally “grasp and strike”, is a traditional Japanese fighting art mainly based on non-armed techniques. As such, kumi-uchi is consider to have emerged as a complement to the main samurai martial arts, so as to face those difficult situations in which the samurai lost his most powerful weapons. This paper studies the art of kumi-uchi from the Kaze no Ryu school standpoint. The meaning and extension of kumi-uchi, its main aspects, types, dimension and evolution are analyzed. Similarly, we place kumi-uchi into the Kaze no Ryu martial curriculum and reflect on its importance in martial artists’ education.

This study aims to describe the understanding of Japanese language students about the ‘uchi-soto’ concept which is the standard for Japanese people when using the ‘yari-morai’ expression. This also relates to the process of translating speeches containing the verb ‘yari-morai’. Data sources are Japanese manga (Japanese) and a questionnaire that lists structured questions. The method used in data collection is the listening method with tapping technique as the basic technique and the listening-free-engaged-conversation technique as an advanced technique. Whereas in the analysis using contextual and descriptive methods, the sentence is analyzed by explaining the context, the concept of ‘uchi-soto’ in relation to the use of ‘yari-morai’ auxiliary verbs, assessing the results of the translation and relating it to the concept of ‘uchi-soto’ in the linguistic realm. The results of this study indicate 1) in the yaru and ageru verbs, it was found that the respondents' understanding of the uchi-soto concept was the same lack. 2) on the morau verb, the authors found that respondents were able to determine the uchi-soto relationship and 3) in the kureru verb, some respondents can distinguish and determine the uchi-soto relationship well, however, when the kureru verb becomes kudasaru, even though the respondent can still recognize the uchi-soto relationship, some 100% of the translating results of the respondent are incorrect. So, from the students' understanding of the concept of uchi-soto which is associated with the results of translation it is known that it does not significantly correlate with student competence in translating utterances that contain yari-morai verbs and vice versa. Although some respondents answered correctly the uchi-soto relationship of the speakers involved in a conversation, it was not in accordance with the translation that resulted from both accuracy and acceptance. On the other hand, although the respondent is able to translate the fragments from the utterances, it is not able to determine the right relationship between speakers with other parties in the given conversation situation. Keywords: expressions; uchi-soto; yari-morai; translation

Endopleura uchi (Huber) Cuatrec. is an Amazon species traditionally used as treatment for inflammations and female disorders. Bergenin was isolated from ethyl acetate fraction of bark of E. uchi by using column chromatography over sephadex LH-20 and then silica gel 60 flash. Its structure was identified on the basis of its NMR spectra. The antimicrobial activity of bergenin and fractions of methanol extract of E. uchi were evaluated against ATCC microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, C. guilliermondii, Aspergillus flavus, A. nidulans). Clinically isolated strains of all of these microorganisms, along with C. tropicalis, A. niger, Shigella sonnei, Serratia marcenses and Klebsiella pneumoniae were also evaluated. The growth inhibition caused by bergenin, extracts and fractions of E. uchi against ATCC microorganisms were similar to the inhibition to microorganisms clinically isolated. The ethyl acetate fraction and the isolate bergenin inhibit the growth of the yeasts C. albicans, C. tropicalis, and C. guilliermondii, but present lower activity against filamentous fungi Aspergillus flavus, A. nidulans, A. niger, and did not inhibit the Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The activity of the ethyl acetate fraction and bergenin are in agreement wit its high concentration found in bark extract of E. uchi. Moreover, the selective activity against three Candida species helps to understand its traditional use against infections that affect women.

Endopleura uchi (Huber) Cuatrec (Humiriaceae), known as uxi or uxi-amarelo in Brazil, is an endemic tree of the Amazon forest. In traditional medicine, its stem bark is used to treat a variety of health disorders, including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, uterine inflammation, and gynecological infections. According to HPLC analysis, the main constituent of the bark extract is the polyphenol bergenin. In the current study, we demonstrate by in vitro and in vivo experiments the antioxidant potential of a water extract from the stem bark of E. uchi. When tested in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, the extract enhanced stress resistance via the DAF-16/FOXO pathway. Additionally, the extract promoted an increase in the lifespan of the worms independent from caloric restriction. It also attenuated the age-related muscle function decline and formation of polyQ40 plaques, as a model for Huntington’s disease. Thus, these data support anti-aging and anti-oxidant properties of E. uchi, which has not yet been described. More studies are needed to assess the real benefits of E. uchi bark for human health and its toxicological profile.

AbstractJapan has been facing with paradigm shift necessity in terms of the demographic structure, globalizing business and technology revolution, and as its consequence, also with deficiency of human resources with global literacy. The Japanese government has established a new strategy aiming to develop and foster “Global Human Resources” with high language and communication skills capable for international operations. Analyses of the literature on Japanese sociocultural behavioral characteristics and empirical case studies carried out in Poland with pragmatics approach in this paper reveal that honorifics regarded as a technical layer of interaction management and Japanese habitus consisting of uchi/soto behavioral scheme, unique uchi-codex are causes of interaction failure. These features make Japanese uchi-group ethnocentric and almost impossible for a non-Japanese to assimilate themselves to the uchi-codex. Neither a foreign speaker’s high level of proficiency of the Japanese language nor their good knowledge on Japanese culture itself guarantee successful communication and interaction in the Japanese business sector without their practical ability and endeavors to apply this Japanese behavioral scheme even partially. The whole sociocultural and behavioral discrepancy or this incompatibility of Japanese behavioral scheme to other cultures seems to keep the Japanese away from achieving Human Resources with global literacy.

The development of effective and safe antimicrobial agents to combat microbial infections revolutionized the medical treatment in the last 60 years. However, together to the self evolution of the organisms, the indiscriminate use of the antibiotics selected extremely resistant species to chemical agents used. As an attempt of to avoid this situation and to enlarge the arsenal of active compounds against pathogenic microorganisms, the study of plants has been growing in the scientific scenary. For the use of phytotherapics in the prevention and/or cure of diseases are necessary previous studies relative to botanical, pharmacognostics, phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological aspects. In this work, were studied extracts obtained with the powdered barks of Endopleura uchi (Huber) Cuatrec., for their pharmacognostic aspects, antimicrobial properties against to several bacterial strains and a yeast, and the cytotoxicity against mammals cells. Our results showed that, related to yield, the best extract was obtained with the percolation 20% (w/v) and, related to total tannins teor, the best extract was obtained with the percolation 10% (w/v). None of the used extracts presented inhibition of the growth to the most analyzed microorganisms. The exception occurred against the Staphylococcus aureus strain, in which the extracts presented a low activity. All analyzed extracts for cytotoxicity presented IC50 higher than the higher applied concentration (2 mg/mL).

The species Endopleura uchi, Humiriaceae family, native to the Amazon, is commonly known as uxi-amarelo or uxi-liso. The tea from its bark is popularly referred to uterine inflammation, urinary, and extremely effective in treating specific fibroids and polycystic ovary. Based on information collected about the popular use of this species in the region of Manaus, the study was conducted to obtain the phytochemical investigation of Endopleura uchi which led to the isolation of friedelin, a pentacyclic triterpene, and also bergenin, a gallic acid derivative, known to have various biological activities and is the main component in the species. In the present study were quantified bergenin in different extracts of different parts of the plant and also in commercial bark Endopleura uchi. The result showed a higher percentage of Bergenin in methanol extracts of bark (CEM-1 = 4.17% and CEM-2 = 4.75%) followed by extracts of leaves and in lower concentrations in aqueous extracts of twigs (GEA-1 = 1.95% and GEA-2 = 1.89%), bergenin as indicating the major component Endopleura uchi and that may be related to biological activities popularly given to the species. All samples analyzed showed the presence of bergenin with percentages ranging from 0.20% to 3.57%, confirming the authenticity of the plant material. Was also performed quantification of total phenolics by Folin-Ciocalteu, which revealed high levels of phenolic compounds from 16.69 to 43.02 mg GAE/g dry extract. This evaluation of the antioxidant activity by reducing iron ranged from 230.43 to 567.89 mmol Fe+2/g of dry extract and the scavenge of radical DPPH ranged from CS50 = 12.04 to 24.20 g/ml. The test for evaluation of antiulcer activity of the fractions ethyl acetate and chloroform leaves showed preventive effects of ulcerations as much as the positive control. The anti-inflammatory assay of aqueous extracts and fractions of Endopleura uchi by inhibition of nitric oxide (NO ) showed significant inhibition capacity, the best result being attributed to chloroform fraction of the leaves with IC50 = 3.2 g/mL. The results obtained from the leaves, twigs and bark species Endopleura uchi with great therapeutic value by the presence of antioxidant compounds and their ability anti-inflammatory and antiulcer, enabling the use of this popular safer plant species and the possible contribution to the development of herbal products or news drugs.

Auditory feedback has been shown to be highly effective at teaching new skills to athletes in a variety of sports. This method consists of targeting a routine, breaking down the specific skills required to complete the routine, and training an individual on those skills using an auditory device to provide feedback on correct responses. This study evaluated the effectiveness of auditory feedback for improving a judo technique. One set of techniques taught in judo are standing throws, which require a partner to receive the technique (uke.) These throws require specific skills to successfully implement the technique. Auditory feedback was evaluated within a multiple baseline across participants design to increase skills for one specific standing throw, ippon seoi nage (one armed shoulder throw.) The skills were scored on a seven item checklist. All participants improved their performance on ippon seoi nage at a quicker pace than what was observed during baseline.

The Campbell mine is located in the eastern part of the Red Lake greenstone belt, Uchi Subprovince. Auriferous veins are parallel to S2, and are termed foliation parallel auriferous veins (NW striking, SW dipping). Auriferous veins also occur in shear zones which are oblique to the regional NW trending foliation (foliation-oblique deformation zones). These auriferous veins occur proximal to the F2 fold hinges. The deformation zones are typically meters to 10's of meters wide, and are characterized by more intense foliation development, and abundant carbonate veins and veinlets. Progressive D2 shortening resulted in a late D2 decollement along the southwestern limb of the Balmer synform, cutting and offsetting auriferous mineralization. Several stages of hydrothermal activity are recognized in the Campbell mine area. Subsequent Au mineralization occurs in quartz veins and quartz + arsenopyrite hydrothermal breccias within quartz + carbonate veins; thus most of the Au mineralization overprints pre-existing quartz + carbonates within the D2 shear zones. Native gold from amphibolite facies domains contains significant Ag, precluding that it formed by the thermal decomposition of aurostibite. Therefore, the spatial variations in occurrence of Au phases reflect the deposition of Au during the peak metamorphism. Higher metamorphic grade rocks are extended westward along the auriferous shear zones, suggesting heat transfer along shear zones by hydrothermal fluids. This suggests a magmatic heat source to the east for auriferous hydrothermal activity. Hence, Au mineralization likely took place during the emplacement of the marginal phase of the Trout Lake batholith. The lack of Type II inclusions in high Au grade breccias is interpreted as a result of the selective loss of H2O following phase separation. Phase separation is probably the most important mechanism for the mineralization of high Au grades (>500 g/t Au) at the mine. The gold-related wallrock alteration at the Campbell Mine is similar to that in other Archean Au deposits hosted by lower amphibolite facies mafic rocks, such as the Coolgardie goldfields (Knight et al., 2000) and the Norseman district deposits (Mueller, 1992). The P-T conditions for the auriferous hydrothermal activity at many Archean lode-type deposits define a low P and high T path. The path indicates much higher temperatures than the Archean geotherm, suggesting either a contribution of heat from contemporaneous magmas to auriferous fluids, or rapid transfer of heat from deep levels. For syn-metamorphic Au deposits, the data support a magmatic heat source. This is in accord with the low P/high T conditions of the metamorphism accompanying the Au deposits. For post-peak metamorphic deposits, the data suggest transport of heat from a source external to the greenstone sequence. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Obesity is the result of various individual characteristics, among which stand out the genetic, environmental and behavioral aspects. Its occurrence is due to abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may result in the risk of developing serious diseases and lipid disorders such as dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia. Many therapeutic treatments are used for reducing body weight. Drugs that inhibits the digestive lipase in the intestinal lumen region are used to control lipid metabolism, which promotes the reduction of fat absorption. Plants have been widely studied as a treatment method based on the popular use. Several plants have proven, due to the presence of catechols antilipemic action. The Endopleura uchi, popularly known as yellow uxi presents in their extracts, phenolic derivatives and flavonoids (catechins). This work aimed to study the efficacy assessment antilipemic bark Endopleura uchi, employing spectrophotometric method. A sample of E. uchi bark was dried and crushed commercially acquired. The methodology involved obtaining the extracts; quantification of flavonoid compounds and phenolic derivatives; evaluation of antioxidant activity and determination of the inhibitory effect of the extract on the enzymatic activity of pancreatic lipase. Three extracts were prepared in solvents with different polarities from 200g dry shredded bark of E. uchi. For the determination of the method flavonoid derivative with aluminum chloride in an acid medium in the presence of pyridine and phenolic derivatives with the method of Folin-Ciocalteau reagent was used. The antioxidant activity assay was performed by reduction of DPPH. Antilipemic effect of the extracts was assessed by enzymatic inhibition of pancreatic lipase using a substrate of p-nitrofenylpalmitate. The extracts showed yield 23,4 g (11,7%) for the water extract, 34,2 g (17.1%) of 80% ethanol extract and 26,6 g (13,3%) of 80% acetone extract.

Abstract: The development of effective and safe antimicrobial agents to combat microbial infections revolutionized the medical treatment in the last 60 years.

The economic exploitation of vegetable oil is considered by SUFRAMA (Superintendência da zona franca de Manaus) one of the best possibilities in the region. However there a few studies related to the chemical composition of amazon fruits and tjheir oil. We have studied the chemical composition of four amazon fruits, namely pataua (Oenocarpus bataua), bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba), uxi-amarelo (Endopleura uchi) and piassava (Leopoldinia piassaba). It is the first report describing the fatty acid, tocopherol and phytosterol composition of piassava fruits. The fatty acid composition was determined by methyl ester conversion and high resolution gas-liquid chromatography and we achieved similar results as the published for pataua, bacaba and uxi-amarelo. Tocopherol composition and quantification was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. Uxi-amarelo had the higher contents of total tocopherols, while pataua the higher amounts of α-tocopherol. The phytosterols were determined by high resolution gas-liquid chromatography with flame-ionization and mass spectrometry detectors. Bacaba and piassava had the higher contents of β-sitosterol. Some biological activities were also determined for the available extracts. The antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts of pataua and bacaba were higher and a antioxidant compound, piceatanol, was also isolated. These extracts also showed the highest capacity to inhibit the enzyme lipoxidase. In the acetylcholinesterase inhibition assay, bacaba had lower capacity, but pataua showed good capacity. The extracts of piassava and bacaba showed also good larvicidal activity in the assays with Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquafasciatus. The chemical and biological results obtained by this study will help the use and development new products from the extracts of these fruits.

Abstract The present study is focused on the experimental characterization of two-phase heat transfer performance and pressure drops within an ultra-compact heat exchanger (UCHE) suitable for electronics cooling applications. In this specific work, the UCHE prototype is anticipated to be a critical component for realizing a new passive two-phase cooling technology for high-power server racks, as it is more compact and lighter weight than conventional heat exchangers. This technology makes use of a novel combination of thermosyphon loops, at the server-level and rack-level, to passively cool an entire rack. In the proposed two-phase cooling technology, a smaller form factor UCHE is used to transfer heat from the server-level thermosyphon cooling loop to the rack-level thermosyphon cooling loop, while a larger form factor UCHE is used to reject the total heat from the server rack into the facility-level cooling loop. The UCHE is composed of a double-side-copper finned plate enclosed in a stainless steel enclosure. The geometry of the fins and channels on both sides are optimized to enhance the heat transfer performance and flow stability, while minimizing the pressure drops. These features make the UCHE the ideal component for thermosyphon cooling systems, where low pressure drops are required to achieve high passive flow circulation rates and thus achieve high critical heat flux values. The UCHE’s thermal-hydraulic performance is first evaluated in a pump-driven system at the Laboratory of Heat and Mass Transfer (LTCM-EPFL), where experiments include many configurations and operating conditions. Then, the UCHE is installed and tested as the condenser of a thermosyphon loop that rejects heat to a pumped refrigerant system at Nokia Bell Labs, in which both sides operate with refrigerants in phase change (condensation-to-boiling). Experimental results demonstrate high thermal performance with a maximum heat dissipation density of 5455 (kW/m3/K), which is significantly larger than conventional air-cooled heat exchangers and liquid-cooled small pressing depth brazed plate heat exchangers. Finally, a thermal performance analysis is presented that provides guidelines in terms of heat density dissipations at the server- and rack-level when using passive two-phase cooling.
