Background: Sorghum downy mildew (SDM) of maize caused by the fungus Peronosclerospora sorghi (Weston and Uppal) C.G. Shaw is one of the most important diseases of maize and it remains vital constraint in maize production. Since maize is the highly cross pollinated crop, exploitation of heterosis is one of the breeding methods to increase the production. Negative values in the expression of heterosis indicate a contribution towards resistance which is highly needed in order to have reduced incid ence of sorghum downy mildew in maize hybrids.Methods: The materials selected as parents for the present study consisted of nine maize inbred lines which comprised of three resistant (UMI102, UMI936(w) and UMI285), three moderately resistant (UMI176, UMI13 and UMI57) and three susceptible (UMI79, UMI432 and UMI467) inbreds to SDM incidence. Nine inbred lines were crossed in all possible combinations including reciprocals in diallel fashion and the resultant seventy two hybrids along with their parents and the check (COH(M)5) were raised and evaluated for resistance against SDM under glass house condition. The extent of heterosis was estimated over mid parent, better parent and popular check hybrid.Result: Analysis of variance for sorghum downy mildew incidence revealed highly significant differences among parents and hybrids indicating greater diversity among the genotypes for sorghum downy mildew incidence under study. Out of seventy two hybrids, only three hybrids namely UMI 13 x UMI 936 (W), UMI 467 x UMI 936 (W) and UMI 432 x UMI 936 (W) exhibited three types heterosis significantly in negative direction.

Downy mildew, caused by the biotrophic Oomycete Plasmopara viticola, is one of the most important diseases of grapevines world wide. It is particularly destructive in temperate viticultural regions that experience warm wet conditions during the vegetative growth of the vine (Wong et al., 2001). The disease is not normally a problem in mediterranean climates where the growing season tends to be hot and dry (Mullins et al., 1992; Sivasithamparam, 1993). Grape downy mildew is however a major disease in Australian viticulture (McLean et al., 1984; Magarey et al., 1991). Grape downy mildew was first reported in Europe in 1878 (Viennot-Bourgin, 1981). In Australia, it was recorded for the first time in 1917 at Rutherglen in Victoria (Vic) (de Castella, 1917). The first recorded outbreak of the disease in Western Australia (WA) occurred in 1997 in a small planting of vines in the far north of the state. In the subsequent year, it was detected in widespread commercial viticulture in the Swan Valley production area, near Perth (McKirdy et al., 1999). The pathogen has since been found in all grape growing regions of WA. Since its introduction into European vineyards in the 1880?s, P. viticola has become one of the world?s most investigated grapevine pathogens. Many aspects its basic biology however remain unknown (Wong et al., 2001). Due to the recent detection of P. viticola in WA, little is known of the nature of strains of the pathogen in the state and their response to local environmental conditions. Much of the research concerning the influence of environmental factors on the development of P. viticola has been conducted in Europe e.g. parts of France and Germany. Due to significant differences in climatic conditions and a shorter selection time on the pathogen in WA, much of the information described in European studies may not be directly applicable to the grape downy mildew disease situation in WA. The focus of this thesis was to examine epidemiological aspects of P. viticola in the mediterranean climate of WA. The environmental conditions that could favour the development of epidemics by strains of the pathogen that have been detected in the state were determined. The existence of P. viticola ecotypes and genetic variation among strains from WA and the Eastern states of Australia was also investigated.

This study investigated the effectiveness of the cascade model in the in-service training of ABET educators in the North West Province with special reference to its dissemination and application at the workplace. To seek an overview of longer term gain from the cascade model of training, the Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation was employed. The evaluation sought to obtain post training perception of the effectiveness of training and its longer term impact. To achieve this goal, qualitative and quantitative research approaches were employed to gather information. A survey questionnaire was used to collect data regarding the biographic information of 103 ABET educators from five Area Project Offices and to determine factors that impede or facilitate the effectiveness of the cascade model of training. Also, interviews were conducted with one ABET Provincial trainer and five APO ABET specialists. This study's significant contributions are its realization that ABET educators are not adequately involved in the planning of their in-service training programme. It further identifies nine factors that impede the effectiveness of the cascade model of training. The factors include the existence of gaps between the training of various levels, inadequate resources for training at the centre levels, negative attitudes of colleagues at the cantres, insufficient knowledge of ABET educators to conduct workshops at their centres, misinterpretation of information and ABET educators not confident to cascade what they have learned from the in-service workshops, low morale of ABET educators, pressures of work and limited time at the centres to cascade training to colleagues, ABET educator's attrition, among others. To circumvent these factors, this study recommends twelve intervention mechanisms namely: involving ABET educators in the planning of their in-service training, basing training on careful assessment of ABET educators' needs, using work-related situations in training, providing support during training, limiting time gaps between the training of various cascade levels, evaluating the impact of in-service training, among others. Finally the study suggested areas of further study on ABET educators' attrition, ABET educators' conditions of service and transfer of learning and the cost-effectiveness of the cascade model and the quality of in-service training of ABET educators. Insights from this study are beneficial to educators, educational managers, policy makers, in-service trainers, NGOs, researchers, facilitators and students.

Hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) seed samples with various levels of a degrading factor known in the trade as mildew were collected for 3 years from primary elevators in the prairie provinces. Samples were examined for viability and the presence of seed-borne fungi. Members of 32 fungal genera were isolated, with Alternaria spp. and Cladosporium spp. the most frequently isolated taxa. When the mycoflora of seeds displaying the mildew discoloration was compared with the mycoflora of the heterogenous mixture of seeds in the original sample from which they had been selected, only Cladosporium spp. showed a significant increase in frequency. The geographic origin of the samples influenced the frequency of a number of fungi. It appears prolonged wet weather at crop maturity bleaches the kernels and stimulates further growth of fungi, primarily Alternaria spp. and cladosporium spp., at the exposed brush end of the seed. This growth discolors the kernels producing what is termed mildew. However, it is primarily the wet harvest weather which affects the actual end-use of the grain. The fungus induced discoloration and the bleaching of the kernels serve the grain inspectors as visual indicators of damp harvest conditions. Although the principle of degrading grain due to the presence of mildewed kernels is soundly based on actual quality reduction, it is suggested that a less ambiguous and more descriptive term such as grey-brush be used.

Jesse Stuart was born in northeastern Kentucky’s Greenup County. His parents, hard-working tenant farmers, instilled in him and his four siblings a drive for education, a poignant emphasis given his father’s illiteracy and his mother’s second-grade education. Stuart graduated from Lincoln Memorial University with a BA in 1929, making friends while there with Don West and James Still. At Vanderbilt University, where he attended graduate school in 1931–1932, Stuart studied with influential southern writers and critics such as Donald Davidson, who also taught Appalachian authors Mildred Haun and Jim Wayne Miller. After graduate school, Stuart returned to Greenup to work as an educator and author....

The Mediterranean region has a highly distinctive climate due to its position between 30 and 45°N to the west of the Euro-Asian landmass. With respect to the global atmospheric system, it lies between subtropical high pressure systems to the south, and westerly wind belts to the north. In winter, as these systems move equatorward, the Mediterranean basin lies under the influence of, and is exposed to, the westerly wind belt, and the weather is wet and mild. In the summer, as shown in Figure 3.1, the Mediterranean lies under subtropical high pressure systems, and conditions are hot and dry, with an absolute drought that may persist for more than two or three months in drier regions. Climates such as this are relatively rare, and the Mediterranean shares its winter wet/summer dry conditions with locations as distant as central Chile, the southern tip of Cape Province in South Africa, southwest Australia in the Southern Hemisphere, and central California in the Northern Hemisphere. All have in common their mid-latitude position, between subtropical high pressure systems and westerly wind belts. They all lie on the westerly side of continents so that, in winter, when the westerly wind belts dominate over their locations, they are exposed to rain-bearing winds. In the Köppen classification (Köppen 1936), these climates are known as Mediterranean (Type Cs, which is subdivided in turn into maritime Csb and continental Csa). The influence of the Mediterranean Sea means that the Mediterranean-type climate of the region extends much further into the continental landmass than elsewhere, and is not restricted to a narrow ocean-facing strip. Nevertheless, within the Mediterranean region climate is modified by position and topographic influences can be important. The proximity of the western Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean gives its climate a maritime flavour, with higher rainfall and milder temperatures throughout the year. The eastern Mediterranean lies closer to the truly continental influences of central Europe and Asia. Its climate is drier, and temperatures are hotter in summer and colder in winter than in the west. Annual rainfall is typically around 750 mm in Rome, but only around 400 mm in Athens.

The article presented information on the main diseases of mint, as well as those diseases that were identified in the collection of the Voznesensky branch of the Federal Research Center “V.S. Pustovoit All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops”. Varieties of mint was affected by such diseases as rust, powdery mildew, anthracnose, of phyllostictosis and fusarium wilt.

The results of pollen analysis clearly indicate the climate changes in the last Glacial and late Holocene. The regional climate became milder and more humid around 14.5–12.5 cal. BP, which corresponds to the Allerød interstadial of the European scale.
