Abstract Abstract 3691 Background: The utility of bone marrow examinations for the investigation of patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a matter of debate. We designed an agreement study to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of bone marrow biopsies and aspirates for the diagnosis of ITP. Methods: Histological slides of bone marrow biopsies from patients with ITP and controls were prepared from stored tissue blocks and corresponding aspirate slides were retrieved for blinded, duplicate, independent pathological review. Patients had a diagnosis of primary ITP, were 18 years of age o

Bone growth is determined by many factors – immobility of bone ends, osteoblastic potency, contact of the bone margins and distance between them. In critically long defects, where the distance between the bone ends is greater than the diameter of the bone, healing processes are compromised because of the limited possibility of bone communication. Applying the gold standard - autotransplantation from a rib, iliac bone, or other donor organ is not always possible, and new healing possibilities are investigated. Abstract Background: Fibrosis in bone marrow is a lethal condition, which currently has no effective treatments. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, produced by megakaryocytes and blasts in myelodisplastic syndrome (MDS) with bone marrow fibrosis, is reportedly linked to this condition; however, the underlying mechanism of fibrosis in bone marrow remains uncharacterized. Recently, interleukin (IL)-13- and TGF-β- producing mast cells have been reported to participate in the development of fibrosis in certain fibrotic diseases, such as the IgG4-related diseases. Abstract MDS constitutes a set of heterogeneous hematopoietic stem cell diseases that are manifested by cytopenias in spite of a cellular bone marrow. MDS carries an increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Data suggest that overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in the marrow plays a role in the cytopenias of MDS. Nitric oxide (NO) has important functions in the immune system. Inflammatory cytokines trigger the expression of the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and NO production. NO inhibits bone marrow progenitor cell growth and induces DNA mutations. Consequently, NO could pl

Bone marrow is a vital element of the human body that produces blood cells. It includes stem cells capable of developing into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Stem cells are the centre for regenerative medicine. Given a right signal these undifferentiated cells have a remarkable potential to develop into specialized cell types (blood cells, heart cells etc.) in the human body. Stem cells, therefore, can be used in cell-based therapies to replace/repair damaged tissues and/or organs. Ongoing research in the area of stem cells focuses on their potential application (both embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells) to create specialized cells and replace the damaged ones.
