Developing country entrepreneurs face family pressure to share income. This pressure, a kinship tax, can distort capital allocations. I combine evidence from a lab experiment—which allows me to estimate an individual-level sufficient statistic for the distortion—with data I collected on a sample of Kenyan entrepreneurs, to quantify the importance of the tax. My data reveal high kinship tax rates for a third of entrepreneurs in my sample. This dissertation provides a philological corpus of the kinship lexicon attested in the Lycian and Hieroglyphic Luwian sources with an evaluation of their semantic, morphological and epigraphic aspects. The present study is based on an updated compilation of the Lycian and Hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions and attempts to describe, synchronically and diachronically, the linguistic nature of the terms under discussion. The analysis resorts to the Comparative Method of Historical Linguistics, as well as to the internal comparison of the different indicators that each type of composition presents.

This thesis demonstrates that all of the practices which define and produce the Tswana family involve dimensions of risk, conflict, and crisis – glossed as dikgang (sing. kgang) – that also threaten to undo it. Dikgang need constantly to be addressed in the right ways by the right people, in a continuously adaptive process of negotiation. Efforts to negotiate dikgang are also fraught, and often produce further problems in turn. I show that Tswana kinship is experienced, generated, and sustained in a continuous cycle of risk, conflict, and irresolution; and that it creates and thrives on crisis
