The article presents Wojciech Chlebda’s model of contronyms, developed through his analyses of the cultural concepts of Polska (Poland) and Europa (Europe) in Polish discourse, with a special attention to the identity-building function of the opposition “us/them” (“one’s own/the Other”). The paper deals with discursive tonality of conceptualization of reason in the Russian language and culture. Everyday network tonality describes reason as ability to think which manifests itself in the opposition of reason and stupidity. Edificatory discourse tonality consists in recommendation to be smart and take into account one's own reason, to value wisdom but at the same time see the limits of human intelligence, to know the benefit of reason but be aware that it may be used to harm other people.
