Streszczenie:
This paper adds five “blocks” (cells) to Ned Block’s 2-by-2 P- and A-Consciousness typology, by converting “phenomenal” and “access” into two orthogonal dimensions of Primary Conscious, and by introducing gradations along each dimension, with P0 (no phenomenal experience), P1 (attenuated phenomenal experience), and P2 (full phenomenal experience); and A0 (no access of mental content to either involuntary or voluntary cognitive/behavioral responses), A1 (access of mental content to involuntary responses), and A2 (access of mental content also to voluntary responses). This leads to a 3x3, 9-block grid, with Phenomenality on the X-axis and Access on the Y-axis. Each combination of P and A is examined for known conscious states. It is concluded that there are no known phenomenal states without at least A1 or A2 access. Neither are there states with A2 access without P2 phenomenality. At the end of the paper, Block’s concept of Reflexive Consciousness is introduced tantalizingly as a third (Z) dimension for consciousness in humans.

Streszczenie:
A key aspect of contemporary lifelong learning theory, policy, and practice is the idea that, because of rapid changes in contemporary societies, there is a constant need for individuals to learn new knowledge and skills in order to adapt themselves to changing conditions. There is, therefore, an increased emphasis on the personal dimension of lifelong learning and on the need to reflexively engage in the (re)construction of one’s self and identity. We can find this, for example, in Anthony Giddens’s idea of the “reflexive project of the self.” The authors argue that this idea is too individualistic and lacks recognition of the moral dimension of self-formation. It therefore not only leads to an impoverished conception of the self but also to an impoverished view of the role of learning in this process. The authors present ideas from Charles Taylor on self and identity to show the role that moral and intersubjective dimensions play in the formation of self and identity. The authors argue that Taylor’s work points to a different form of lifelong learning in late-modernity, one that is more explicitly concerned with the moral dimension of lifelong learning and adult education.

In this manuscript Hobson et al. propose a model exploring qualitative differences between the three states of consciousness, waking, NREM sleep, and REM sleep, in terms of state-related brain activity. The model consists of three factors, each of which varies along a continuum, creating a three-dimensional space: activation (A), information flow (I), and mode of information processing (M). Hobson has described these factors previously (1990; 1992a). Two of the dimensions, activation and modulation, deal directly with subcortical influences upon cortical structures – the reticular activation system, with regard to the activation dimension and the locus coeruleus and the pontine raphe neuclei, with regard to the modulation dimension. The focus of this review is a further exploration of the interaction between dreaming and the cortical and subcortical structures relevant to REM sleep eye movements.[Hobson et al. ]

Streszczenie:
It is well known that there are 16 two-dimensional reflexive polytopes up to lattice isomorphism. One can check directly from the list that the number of lattice points on the boundary of such a polytope plus the number of lattice points on the boundary of the dual polytope is always 12. It turns out that two-dimensional reflexive polytopes correspond to certain relations of two generators A and B of SL 2(ℤ) of length 12. We generalize this correspondence to reflexive configurations with winding number w and relations of length 12w.

Streszczenie:
AbstractLet ℱ be a coherent rank 2 sheaf on a scheme Y ⊂ ℙn of dimension at least two and let X ⊂ Y be the zero set of a section σ ∈ H0(ℱ). In this paper, we study the relationship between the functor that deforms the pair (ℱ, σ) and the two functors that deform F on Y, and X in Y, respectively. By imposing some conditions on two forgetful maps between the functors, we prove that the scheme structure of e.g., the moduli scheme MY(P) of stable sheaves on a threefold Y at (ℱ), and the scheme structure at (X) of the Hilbert scheme of curves on Y become closely related. Using this relationship, we get criteria for the dimension and smoothness of MY(P) at (ℱ), without assuming Ext2(ℱ,ℱ) = 0. For reflexive sheaves on Y = ℙ3 whose deficiencymodule M = H*1 (ℱ) satisfies 0Ext2(M,M) = 0 (e.g., of diameter at most 2), we get necessary and sufficient conditions of unobstructedness that coincide in the diameter one case. The conditions are further equivalent to the vanishing of certain graded Betti numbers of the free graded minimal resolution of H*0 (ℱ). Moreover, we show that every irreducible component of Mℙ3 (P) containing a reflexive sheaf of diameter one is reduced (generically smooth) and we compute its dimension. We also determine a good lower bound for the dimension of any component of Mℙ3 (P) that contains a reflexive stable sheaf with “small” deficiency module M.

Streszczenie:
Automobilization as mobility paradigm. Reflections on cars, drivers and spatio-temporalities This article attempts to provide a theoretical contribution to ‘traffic and mobility sociology’. The article discusses three central dimensions of automobilization. The first is automobilization’s spatio-temporal context. Automobilization has opened the urban structure and liberated the individual from its physical limitations, while it has created a more dangerous and spread out structure, which constantly forces both humans and commodities to keep moving. The second dimension is the subject of automobilization. While the car has liberated the modern individual from spatio-temporal structures, it has embedded its users into a more mobile life form. The third dimension is the vehicles themselves. Cars are surprisingly alike in their structure, however they take on human characteristics. The article argues that automobilization has become reflexive. Under reflexive automobilization almost all ‘autosubjects’ are engaged in defining, interpreting and responding to the car’s environmental threats, not necessarily in a self-critical fashion. Rather their responses often merely lead to a reproduction of traditional ‘auto-spaces’.

This paper analyses the concept of ‘risk’, which both as a theoretical tool and dimension of modern society, is slowly being developed within the humanistic and social sciences (Delanty, 1999). Notwithstanding this, the concept of risk and the meaning and implications associated with it, have not been fully explored in relation to disability. Risk is shrouded in historical and contemporary political debate about whose ‘role’ and ‘responsibility’ is it for ‘disability’ in society – does it reside with the state or the individual?

This paper contemplates objectification of some of the most relevant reflexive processes of a qualitative research. More precisely, it seeks to highlight the centrality of reflexivity in the ethnographic craft when putting into practice one or another epistemic-methodological perspective, which would contribute to outlining an ethnographic investigation that tends to rigour, thereby enabling the public insertion of the generated socio-anthropologic knowledge. In this work, it is shown the set of theoretical-conceptual tools that, to a certain extent, has been useful for the articulation of the aforementioned reflexive dimension, and thanks to which several obstacles and reorientations of a doctoral research are framed. Amongst these tools, the most important are: epistemological distancing, methodological implication, the fluctuation among the research object, the politics of the field, the final product, and its public insertion; the interweaving of the microsocial and structural levels, as well as the time of immersion in the field and the relationship with the defining tempos of the micro-worlds composing everyday life.

The main result is that a Banach space X is not super-reflexive if and only if the diamond graphs Dn Lipschitz embed into X with distortions independent of n. One of the consequences of that and previously known results is that dimension reduction a la Johnson–Lindenstrauss fails in any non-super-reflexive space with nontrivial type. We also introduce the concept of Lipschitz (p,r)-summing map and prove that every Lipschitz mapping is Lipschitz (p,r)-summing for every 1 ≤ r < p.

Purpose For social marketers to become effective change agents, evaluation is important. This paper aims to expand existing evaluation work to empirically respond to Gordon and Gurrieri’s request for a reflexive turn in social marketing using reflexive process evaluations: measuring more than “what” worked well, but also evaluating “how” and “why” success or indeed failure happened. Design/methodology/approach An online survey, adapting Dillman’s tailored design method empirically assesses 13 reflexive process hypotheses. With a response rate of 74 per cent, regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the proposed hypotheses and to identify the significant predictors of each of the reflexive process relationships under investigation. Findings The study empirically examines and shows support for three reflexive process evaluation constructs – relationships, knowledge and networking. Network involvement and reciprocity; two process dimension constructs do not exert any impact or predict any relationship in the conceptual framework. Originality/value This paper expands evaluation theory and practice by offering a conceptual framework for reflexive process evaluation that supports the logic to be reflexive. It shows support for three reflective process evaluation constructs – relationships, knowledge and networks. Another unique element featured in this study is the empirical assessment of Gordon and Gurrieri’s “other stakeholders”, extending evaluations beyond a traditional client focus to an interconnected assessment of researchers, clients and other stakeholders.

Streszczenie:
Contrary to Bourdieu's thesis, it is not only when a subject's habitus does not fit a field's positions that s/he becomes more reflexive. Reflexivity is also enhanced by intra-habitus tensions, by more general incongruences between dispositions, positions, and interactive/figurational structures, as well as by situations unrelated to them. Because of his ambitious but unsuccessful attempt to transcend the objectivist-subjectivist divide in the social sciences, Bourdieu underemphasizes the interactive dimension of social games, and this creates serious problems for his conceptualization of the linkages between habitus, reflexivity, and practices. The way to make Bourdieu's theory of practice less functionalist and/or deterministic is to restructure it so that it seriously takes into account not only the dispositional and positional but also the interactive dimension of social games. It then becomes obvious that reflexive accounting, conscious strategizing, and rational calculation are not exceptional but routine, constitutive elements of human action.

The context of education under scrutiny in this paper is the post-experience practitioner sector, concerning students of ethics in Business Administration at both Masters and Doctoral levels. Responsible leadership is examined as a core theme in business ethics research and education. The paper proposes that responsible leaders require a virtuous mind-set, underpinned by Aristotelian thinking. Responsible leadership and romanticised models of leadership are interwoven in a critique of the technical-rational predominance in leadership and ethics research. The development of reflective practice is tracked from Argyris and Schon’s reflection on and in action to reflexivity. The paper considers the essence of Aristotle’s virtue ethics in proposing an integrative framework of skill and behaviour acquisition in organisational ethical decision-making. Reflective leadership and reflexivity are examined in relation to practitioner learning and the concept of a reflexive practicum explored to provide a praxis dimension to ethics education practice.

The values in which teachers believe express the philosophy of education to which they adhere. Our study is based on two related dimensions: the study of the specialised literature and the conclusions of some studies that we have conducted in the last 5 years regarding the values in which the teachers at different stages of the Romanian education system believe. Its purpose: to identify significant perspectives for the complementary analysis of the teacher’s axiological universe. We identified, developed and systematised the following perspectives: contemporary world and the dimension of values; initial and continuous teacher training and the issue of values; on axiological self-reflexivity and its effects and the transfer of values and the holistic evolution of the teacher. The conclusions reinforce the teacher’s hypostasis as reflexive practitioner with profound implications, both on the day-to-day performance of the instructive-educational process and on the reconsideration of the coordinates of their initial/continuing training. Keywords: Values, teacher’s axiological universe, reflexive practitioner.

Martial Arts and Combat Sports (MACS) are now a major area of qualitative inquiry in physical culture studies. As part of this subfield, reflexive accounts of ethnographic methods are contributing to knowledge of qualitative methods and embodied interactions. Within this article I seek to add to these growing contributions by considering a relatively understudied strategy in martial arts research – that of face–to–face interviews – from a physical and reflexive dimension. Drawing from case studies of British practitioners of Traditionalist Chinese Martial Arts (TCMAs), this confessional tale calls for a reflexive look at the embodied dimension of face–to–face interviews alongside the more conventional analysis of language.‘Zack and I eagerly scrambled up the hill. It was a break during an exciting interview, and we were keen to take some fresh air, marvel at a local Celtic cross, and most importantly, explore some of the embodied concepts that we had discussed for the last hour over a cup of tea. For over an hour we progressed from basic drills to free–flow training in close proximity, occasionally clipping each other across the ear or striking a rib, but always in good humour. When we returned to his home for his home–cooked stew and a refreshing beverage, my shoulders and forearms had plenty of ammunition to power the second half of the interview: About what just happened.’ (Field notes)

Editorial Summary Steffen Bösenberg’s contribution »Thinking the Transformative« reflects the dynamic momentum of reflexive design and research. In reference to the working process of his doctoral thesis, he highlights the procedural circularity of reflexive, concept-driven research approaches, tracing the »circular motion of constant reflection and rethinking«. Hereby a transdisciplinary concept of »plasticity« is explored as a productive tool in the analysis of design methods in adaptive reuse. Decision-making, reconsideration, comparison or evaluation thereby become considerable as reciprocally interlinked processes, which equally depend upon and shape each other. Most interestingly, the transformation and plasticity of the process mirrors the dynamic dimension of the investigated case studies. [Katharina Voigt]

The British television series Doctor Who often depicts the discovery of new dimensions that provoke both affective experiences and heroic moments. Every discovery of a new dimension in Doctor Who is overwhelming, sudden and transformative, a moment of wonder and inspiration. This article considers three episodes, featuring discoveries of a new dimension of space (‘The Rings of Akhaten’ 2013), agency (‘Dark Water’ 2014) and imagination (‘Vincent and the Doctor’ 2010), which all combine affect and the heroic, albeit in different ways. Acknowledging the difficulty of grasping moments of affecting and being affected due to their dynamic and pre-reflexive nature, the article uses close readings of selected scenes to narrow down the descriptive gap as far as possible. The case study of ‘Dark Water’ also includes an analysis of the episode’s reception in reviews and on social media platforms to highlight the actual affective response of the audience. The episodes’ narratives of discovering new dimensions of space, agency and imagination, medialized through specific audio-visual means, closely intertwine affective experiences with heroic moments: affective experiences can trigger heroic action, a heroic claim of agency can have an affective dimension and the ability to affect and be affected can in itself be heroized.

- Fragments of reflexive modernity The conception of development focused more on the quantity than on the quality, more on competition than on cooperation, more on utilitarian exchanges than on reciprocity is showing all its limits. In this context, the concept of the relationship of care highlights what has been slowly and progressively compressed and eliminated, thus creating the condition of instability of our social systems: the essentially and "existentially" relational dimension of human experience and of social life. This dimension, through a logic of comparative counterposition, is used for a critical analysis of the model of the current development.

This essay presents a literary analysis of the TV series Westworld (2016‒), created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who take Michael Crichton’s Westworld (1973) as its hypotext. In so doing, the paper will firstly trace the literary and film sources of the series, particularly Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which is the myth informing the overall diegetic universe of the series as an architext. Secondly, it will comment on the reflexive elements present in the series, looking at certain key sequences that exemplify its metafictional dimension. The main contention will be that the series success lies in the combination of these two dimensions, the Frankensteinian and the metafictional, since both contribute to emphasise the postmodern philosophical questions posed by Nolan and Joy.

The sociological imagination (SI) has been an important framework relied upon by the field of sociology. This paper intertwines the SI with reflexive narrative to illuminate insight into the carceral experience from the perspective of an incarcerated person. Combining reflexive practice and drawing on various sociological principles, it delves deeply into the emotions, concerns, context in how the prison system fails incarcerated people. Interrogating various themes including, employment, homosexuality in prisons, and the underlying social misconceptions of the utility of prisons; It spotlights the realities of people under the care and control of the correctional system by drawing on autoethnography, theory and empirical evidence. The use of the SI in elaborating upon the carceral experience provides a more intimate approach not otherwise explored in the traditional modes of criminological inquiry, adding an important person-centred dimension to the analysis of the carceral experience.

Abstract Making work of the morality of teachers daily practice through reflection and dialogueAn exploratory case study to teachers’ meaning given to their daily practice experiences with pupilsThis article reports a study into the reflection of teachers. The teachers participated in a professional learning community (PLC) to investigate their interactions with pupils in a dialogical process with colleagues. For this purpose a ‘critical reflexive dialogue’ was developed. First, we investigated how teachers give meaning to their experiences through three types of reflection ‐ content, process and critical reflection ‐ and or a shift in type of reflection takes place with the use of a critically reflexive dialogue. Second, we studied how the moral-political dimension occurred in teachers’ critical reflection. The research was conducted as an explorative case study in which the theoretical framework establishes a connection between moral educational practice with the types of reflection for teachers. Based on observations and field notes from eleven PLC meetings, results show when teachers make sense individually, they mainly pay attention to the content and the process of reflection. In this situation critical reflection is not self-evident. However, the results also show that teachers get more involved in critical reflection through critical dialogue and collective learning with colleagues in the PLC. Moral-political dimension included teachers’ critical reflection, but mainly focus on the meaning of their own beliefs for their daily practice and pupils and rarely on social and political influences. Based on these results, it is recommended that the moral-political dimension receives more explicit attention in teachers’ reflection.

AbstractFor a commutative local ring R, consider (noncommutative) R-algebras Λ of the form Λ = EndR(M) where M is a reflexive R-module with nonzero free direct summand. Such algebras Λ of finite global dimension can be viewed as potential substitutes for, or analogues of, a resolution of singularities of Spec R. For example, Van den Bergh has shown that a three-dimensional Gorenstein normal ℂ-algebra with isolated terminal singularities has a crepant resolution of singularities if and only if it has such an algebra Λ with finite global dimension and which is maximal Cohen–Macaulay over R (a “noncommutative crepant resolution of singularities”). We produce algebras Λ = EndR(M) having finite global dimension in two contexts: when R is a reduced one-dimensional complete local ring, or when R is a Cohen–Macaulay local ring of finite Cohen–Macaulay type. If in the latter case R is Gorenstein, then the construction gives a noncommutative crepant resolution of singularities in the sense of Van den Bergh.

The first part of this paper is concerned with the Artinianness of certain local cohomology modules [Formula: see text] when M is a Matlis reflexive module over a commutative Noetherian complete local ring R and 𝔞 is an ideal of R. Also, we characterize the set of attached prime ideals of [Formula: see text], where n is the dimension of M. The second part is concerned with the vanishing of local cohomology and generalized local cohomology modules. In fact, when R is an arbitrary commutative Noetherian ring, M is an R-module and 𝔞 is an ideal of R, we obtain some lower and upper bounds for the cohomological dimension of M with respect to 𝔞.

Many studies have attributed self-controlled feedback benefits associated with motor learning to learners' greater information processing during practice. However, individual learner characteristics like their impulsivity can also influence how people engage cognitively during learning. We investigated possible dissociations between the types of interaction in self-controlled knowledge of results (KR) and learner impulsivity levels in learning a sequential motor task. Ninety volunteers responded to the self-restraint section of the Barkley deficits in executive functioning scale, and those 60 participants with the highest ( n = 30) and lowest ( n = 30) impulsivity scores practiced a motor task involving sequential pressing of four keys in predetermined absolute and relative times. We further divided participants into four experimental groups by assigning the high- and low-impulsivity groups to two forms of KR—self-controlled absolute and yoked. Study results showed no interaction effect between impulsivity and self-controlled KR, and, contrary to expectation, self-controlled KR did not benefit learning, independently of impulsivity. However, low-impulsivity participants performed better than high-impulsivity participants on the absolute dimension of the transfer task, while high-impulsivity learners were better at the relative dimension. Cognitive characteristics of automatic and reflexive processing were expressed by the strategies used to direct attention to relative and absolute task dimensions, respectively. Low-impulsivity learners switched their attention to both dimensions at the end of practice, while high-impulsivity learners did not switch their attention or directed it only to the relative dimension at the end of the practice. These results suggest that the cognitive styles of high- and low-impulsive learners differentially favor learning distinct dimensions of a motor task, regardless of self-controlled KR.

The system of relationships and emotions that develop in the teaching-learning process define the complexity of teachers' education and pose the challenge of bringing out the emotional and affective culture that guides school life. Several studies on teaching practices highlight the tendency to refer to technical aspectsas a key dimension of professionalism, rather than on relational and emotional dimensions that can promote the relationship with student. The creative and unprecedented reconfiguration of professional practice is configured as the outcome of a reflexive process of subjective construction and de-construction of the profession and its development. The paper proposes a reflective training experience, which involved 76 teachers, focused on emotional and relational dimensions on teaching and based on the use of the narrative-autobiographical instruments (diary, narrative, metaphor). The results achieved in the monitoring phase show that the training offered an opportunity to reflect on oneself and one's personal and professional experience, starting from the use of alternative perspectives and interpretations than those that are already in use

This article examines how individuals are reflexive beings who interpret the world in relation to things that matter to them, and how charitable acts are evaluated and embedded in their lives with different degrees of meaning and importance. Rather than framing the discussion of charitable practices in terms of an altruism/egoism binary or imputing motivations and values to social structures, the article explains how reflexivity is an important and neglected dimension of social practices, and how it interacts with sympathy, sentiments and discourses to shape giving. The study also shows that there are different modes of reflexivity, which have varied effects on charity and volunteering.

The contemporary rewritings of Don Juan’s myth highlight several forms of hybridity and illustrate the stakes involved. The hybridation affects in the first place the sources of the myth since the authors appeal to numerous intertextual references. But the successive transpositions of the mythical scenario also lead to a generic hybridity. This intermediality has a reflexive dimension: it raises the question of the limits of language to talk about the myth and abolishes the frontier between fiction and critical speech.

We study equivariant resolutions and local cohomologies of toric sheaves for affine toric varieties, where our focus is on the construction of new examples of indecomposable maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules of higher rank. A result of Klyachko states that the category of reflexive toric sheaves is equivalent to the category of vector spaces together with a certain family of filtrations. Within this setting, we develop machinery which facilitates the construction of minimal free resolutions for the smooth case as well as resolutions which are acyclic with respect to local cohomology functors for the general case. We give two main applications. First, over the polynomial ring, we determine in explicit combinatorial terms the ℤn-graded Betti numbers and local cohomology of reflexive modules whose associated filtrations form a hyperplane arrangement. Second, for the nonsmooth, simplicial case in dimension d ≥ 3, we construct new examples of indecomposable maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules of rank d – 1.

OBJECTIVE: describe how music is used in the development of group educational activity in Family Health. METHODS: a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, developed with 10 group coordinators, distributed in five basic care units in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Data were collected from March to July, 2009, with non participant observation in the group itself, and semi-structured interviews with the coordinators. Information was organized and categorized according to thematic analysis. To interpret the data, the Snyderian concepts in addition to theoretical references about music, communication and health education were used. RESULTS: three thematic nuclei were found: the affective dimension of music; recreative dimension of music and the reflexive dimension of music. CONCLUSION: an attempt by the coordinators was observed, to overcome the pathological barriers with the use of music, considering the group as a whole. As advancement for the production of knowledge, this study shows the need for qualification of these coordinators, by means of workshops and constant follow-up of their musical practices.

Abstract Of the numerous factors affecting language development, a particular role has been assigned to Metalinguistic Awareness (MLA) as a major constituent of the cognitive development of experienced language learners, while being itself a key to accelerated language learning (e.g., Jessner, 2008). The present study explores the relationship between multilingual usage and MLA in French-speaking Quebeckers (n = 66) with different language backgrounds who start to learn German after English in a formal setting. ‘Multilingual experience’ was operationalized by the frequency and the diversity of foreign language use across 10 different contexts of use. A reflexive dimension of MLA was assessed by means of the THAM-3 (Pinto & El Euch, 2015), and complemented by think-aloud protocols produced during a multilingual translation task, which reflected an applied dimension of MLA. Multiple regression analyses suggest that both frequency and diversity of non-native language use in specifically literacy-based activities predicted the applied dimension of MLA.

Streszczenie:
The modern stage of the development of psychological knowledge reveals new opportunities for a more complete consideration of the phenomenon of freedom in psychology, primarily by studying the spiritual dimension of consciousness. There are four layers of consciousness associated with the development of freedom: spiritual, value, reflexive, and existential. It is shown that most authors consider freedom mainly in the reflexive layer of consciousness, linking it with awareness, meaningfulness of life, self-management. There are fewer studies that affect the value layer of consciousness, where freedom is associated with the desire for self-realization, the choice of personal values and meanings; studies of the existential layer, where freedom is considered as a choice of opportunities in the space of culture, the space of social norms and rules. The article presents the approach of V.P. Zinchenko and G.V. Ozhiganova, who showed the importance of the spiritual layer of consciousness, its priority role in relation to the value, reflexive and existential layers. The spiritual layer of consciousness and the corresponding spiritual freedom are poorly studied in psychology, as are the types of freedom and its structural components. Freedom is understood by the author as a component of human consciousness, a product and result of the development of spiritual, value, reflexive and existential layers of consciousness, consisting in the conscious overcoming of external and internal obstacles in the course of life for the purpose of self-realization and spiritual self-improvement. Based on the theoretical analysis of the literature, the author's model of the structure of freedom as a component of human consciousness is proposed, which describes the structure of two types of freedom: external and internal. The appearance of freedom is determined to a greater extent by the existential, reflexive, value-based, to a lesser extent spiritual layers of consciousness, aimed at self-realization and self-actualization. Interior view of freedom is determined to a greater extent by the spiritual, value and reflexive, to a lesser extent by the existential layer of consciousness, aimed at spiritual self-improvement and personal growth. The theoretical model of the structure of freedom as a component of human consciousness proposed by the author can serve as the basis for the study of freedom in psychology.

Global warming and the necessity to reduce carbon emissions have introduced plant-based diets and veganism into academic and general discussion. Previous studies analyzed vegan consumption practices as central to leading such a lifestyle, but these studies focused on the material dimension of vegan consumption and not on the cognitive strategies involved in food choices. The purpose of this research was to analyze the cognitive and practical strategies used by vegans in adopting non-animal food consumption. For this purpose, the study examined biographic interviews with young vegans in Santiago, Chile. The results showed that adopting veganism implies a new social identity that redefines the edible/inedible categories. To maintain their identity, vegans must control their eating and make it reflexive. The establishment of new eating practices, based on individual and peer learning, facilitates their daily food choices, although reflexivity will always be present. This work contributes to a new understanding of the consumption of plant-based foods, showing that veganism involves the adoption of new food classifications and reflexive routines.

AbstractThis paper is part of the research project “Cosmopolitismos juvenis no Brasil” (Youth Cosmopolitanisms in Brazil), partner of the international research project “Cultures Juveniles à l’ ère de la globalization”. Our aim for this paper is to understand the connection between food and cosmopolitan experiences, discussing two main perspectives of omnivorism studies - (1) that cultural omnivorism cause long-term indifference for cultural diversity; and (2) that this omnivorism indicates only intercultural curiosity translated into specific distinctive capital in fields of power - and the possibility of these visions of cultural omnivorism turn into a reflexive view of the Other. We applied empirical and bibliographic research, including qualitative research with Brazilians aged between 18 and 24 years who are living in the city of São Paulo, and theoretical reflections related to the fields of food and cultural studies, covering omnivorism, otherness and cosmopolitanism. In the case of the first perspective, there is no possibility of connection to otherness, hence, to cosmopolitanism. The analysis of the second perspective shows that it is possible to find threats of distinction connected to cultural and food omnivorism. Therefore, it is still necessary to develop further studies to understand the reflexive dimension of cosmopolitanism within cultural and food consumption.
