Consistency between personal values and career choices is essential to achieve job satisfaction and to attain positive career outcomes and self-realization. Schwartz and Bilsky (1987) propose ten basic values, measured through the Portrait Value Questionnaire, related to the universal needs of existence: self-direction, stimulation, hedonism, power, achievement, security, conformity, tradition, universalism, and benevolence. These values are organized in a circular shape, according to their similarities and dissimilarities and following the contraposition between openness to change and conservation, and between self-enhancement and self-transcendence. Focusing on professional goals and aspirations, Schein’s Career Orientation Inventory (1990) identifies eight anchors that drive employees’ career paths and orientations: general managerial competence, technical/functional competence, autonomy/independence, security/stability, entrepreneurial creativity, dedication to a cause, pure challenge, life-style. Schein affirms that a career anchor is “that one element in a person self-concept, which he or she will not give up even in the face of difficult choices” (1990). In this paper, we aim at understanding the mutual relationship between the paradigms proposed by Schwartz and Schein, in order to enlighten how personal motivations inform career preferences and choices. We administered the Portrait Value Questionnaire and the Career Orientation Inventory scales to a sample of 253 respondents who work in different fields and positions, through a survey questionnaire. Results show a high level of consistency between Schwartz’s and Schein’s theoretical frames. Those who are more oriented to the openness to change dimension tend to favour careers of autonomy and entrepreneurial creativity, while a conservative motivation leads to more safe and stable careers; analogously, personal values of self-enhancement support challenging careers while self-transcendence pushes for dedication to a cause and work-life balance.

In The Act of Work (1984) Heilbroner argues that work expresses subordination and its opposite, freedom. Work cannot be described solely in terms of objectively defined tasks, but of subordinately completed tasks. With modern capitalism, the formal freedom not to work is introduced, and it is the end of work based on force. With the development of industrial society, the blackmail of hunger also disappears, because in our society no one is condemned to die of hunger. Therefore capitalism raises the problem of the motivation of work that makes it desirable even though it is no longer essential for life. In this regard Heilbroner lists five main motivations. But if in capitalism it is possible to work with a certain degree of freedom and self-realization, Heilbroner raises the question of whether a a society without work and effortlessly subjugated is conceivable.

The free time or leisure time is understood only just as a supplement or the rest after work; however, it has its intrinsic value, carries potential of freedom, self-realization, fun and relax. The text deals with leisure time functions and its meaning for individuals and complete family. It highlights issues that are connected with spending of leisure time. In the second part of the chapter, there are results of survey, which was mapping of family spending of free time, its amount and fulfilment. In all the surveyed countries, spending of leisure time has proved to be an important perquisite for family life satisfaction. Activities that are the most likely to be undertaken together with family members are watching TV, walks, trips, visits of friends or relatives, visits of cultural actions and social games.

This chapter highlights the place of romanticism and Protestantism in William Morris's socialism. His romanticism led him to seek self-realization through an art based on naturalness and harmony. His Protestantism led him to do so in the everyday worlds of work and home. Morris inherited from John Ruskin a sociology that linked self-realization in daily life to the quality of art in a society. Even when Morris turned to Marxism, he still defined his socialist vision in terms of good art produced and enjoyed within daily life. This chapter explores how James Joyce’s Bildungsroman disrupts the recapitulatory plot by fusing the ostensibly primitive body to the ostensibly advanced linguistic faculties of its budding poet-protagonist, Stephen Dedalus. This fusion results in repeated reversionary digressions from the progressive movement toward artistic self-realization: the very words that Stephen seeks for his art bring him instead into the realm of the sexual and procreative body. These atavistic reversions allow Joyce’s to ironize and supply an alternative to his protagonist’s desire to separate the body from aesthetic experience and artistic maturity.

Chapters five and six focus on Wordsworth. The first part of chapter five examines Wordsworth’s problematic relationship to the eighteenth-century discourses of “the picturesque.” The remainder of the chapter explores Wordsworth’s naturalist views on culture, education, and language. Despite his general adherence to eighteenth-century universalism in human psychology, Wordsworth understands that the appreciation of beauty and sublimity in both nature and art exists universally in human nature only potentially, and that its realization presupposes culture and education. The question arises: What is Wordsworth’s naturalist idea of acculturation? Passages from his prose works show that Wordsworth’s hypothetical accounts of “natural” aesthetic education are in fact accounts of self-education constructed in strictly empirical terms.

Abstract This chapter describes how creative experiences are organized by YouthSites, what arts traditions they emerge from, how they changed over time, and what range of purposes they afford for participants and audiences alike. The chapter begins with an overview of forms of expression enjoyed and practiced by socially marginalized groups that influenced youth arts practices in London, Toronto, and Vancouver. It then explores how these arts practices derive from interconnections between lived experience, philosophies of self-realization, the role of community, relationality, and, above all, the relationship between making/performing/exhibiting art and social change. Key to the chapter is the way that forms of community arts reframe the relationship between audiences and practitioners, giving prominence to modes of expression as well as types and ranges of voices that are frequently excluded by the high culture tradition of the arts in both Canada and the United Kingdom.
