This study aimed to understand which acoustic parameters of Spanish-accented English are correlated with listeners’ perception of Spanish-accentedness. Temporal differences were analyzed in multisyllabic target words spoken in sentences by 22 Spanish speakers of English and five native speakers of American English (AE). Recordings were presented to AE listeners who judged the degree of accentedness on a 9-point scale. Spearman rank order correlation showed that the listeners’ ratings of degree of accentedness in sentences correlated strongly (r= +0.82) with those in words. Listeners’ ratings o

In this study, we analyze the so-called “syllable contraction”, that is, the reduction of a sequence of two identical vowels to the duration of a single sound, across word boundaries. We investigate the phenomenon in the semi-spontaneous speech of speakers of the following dialects of Spanish: Madrilenian, Andalusian, Mexican and Rioplatense. Furthermore, we compare their results with the oral (also semi-spontaneous) production of B2 (CEFR) level Hungarian learners of Spanish. We raise the following research hypotheses: (i) syllable contraction is a common phenomenon in all of the four analyze

It is a well-demonstrated phenomenon that listeners can discriminate native phonetic contrasts better than nonnative ones. Recent neuroimaging studies have started to reveal the underlying neural mechanisms. By focusing on the mismatch negativity/response (MMN/R), a widely studied index of neural sensitivity to sound change, researchers have observed larger MMNs for native contrasts than for nonnative ones in EEG, but also a more focused and efficient neural activation pattern for native contrasts in MEG. However, direct relations between behavioral discrimination and MMN/R are rarely reported

Abstract This case study examines the pragmatic development of address forms of a US-based Spanish heritage speaker of Mexican descent, Juan, during an 11-week abroad program in Argentina. Instruments included a background questionnaire, a pre/post-written elicitation task, four interviews, and 16 naturalistic recordings during host family dinners and service encounters. Findings indicate that Juan decreased his use of vos on elicitation tasks and did not use vos at all in naturalistic recordings. There was an increase, however, in his metapragmatic awareness, or his understanding of the ways

Compression of the vowel space area and reduced vowel dispersion have been observed as features of the California Vowel Shift (CVS, D’Onofrio, Pratt, and Van Hofwegen 2019). The present research provides empirical data to address the gap in the literature regarding the influence of regional sound change on contact languages, namely the influence of CVS on Bay Area Spanish. Analysis of word list tasks given to bilingual speakers of Bay Area Spanish and monolingual speakers of Mexican Spanish reveals a more compressed vowel space in Bay Area Spanish and patterns that mirror changes in progress i

Abstract Monolingually-raised English speakers in the North Midland region of the United States have been found to produce a centralized or fronted /u/, despite it not being a standard feature of the region. The production of this relatively novel sound in bilingual contexts, as is the case of English-Spanish bilingual communities in the Chicagoland area, is not currently well-understood. In order to examine the effect of language contact and phonetic transfer on bilinguals’ speech, 20 adult heritage speakers from the Chicagoland area were recorded while producing /u/ in English and Spanish. 2

This paper analyses the colloquialization of football-match broadcastings in Peninsular Spanish throughout the 20th century, in line with other recent works dealing with the colloquialization of mass-media. To do so, it accounts for (a) linguistic features, (b) register variation, and (c) external factors related to colloquialization. The analysis is based on a self-compiled database of audio-visual recordings aired between 1968 and the 2000s in Tv and radio. According to results, colloquialization in Peninsular Spanish football broadcasts was developed during three main periods: 1960s–1980s,
