Streszczenie:
Abstract. Cellular automaton versions of the Burridge-Knopoff model have been shown to reproduce the power law distribution of event sizes; that is, the Gutenberg-Richter law. However, they have failed to reproduce the occurrence of foreshock and aftershock sequences correlated with large earthquakes. We show that in the case of partial stress recovery due to transient creep occurring subsequently to earthquakes in the crust, such spring-block systems self-organize into a statistically stationary state characterized by a power law distribution of fracture sizes as well as by foreshocks and aftershocks accompanying large events. In particular, the increase of foreshock and the decrease of aftershock activity can be described by, aside from a prefactor, the same Omori law. The exponent of the Omori law depends on the relaxation time and on the spatial scale of transient creep. Further investigations concerning the number of aftershocks, the temporal variation of aftershock magnitudes, and the waiting time distribution support the conclusion that this model, even "more realistic" physics in missed, captures in some ways the origin of the size distribution as well as spatio-temporal clustering of earthquakes.

Streszczenie:
Natural systems undergo several morphological changes with time. To study spatio-temporal dynamics of such natural systems, and to further understand the morphological dynamical behaviors, various images that show several macro- and micro-level phenomena, acquired by various types of sensors need to be analyzed in spatio-temporal scales. Such analyses, to facilitate the researcher to model the spatio-temporal organization of a desired phenomenon, evidently require the robust procedures to extract specific error-free features from multiscale-temporal images represented in discrete space. Geometry and topology based features, such as edges of unique type and general type, are the indicators to record the changes that occur temporally. Extraction of such information is essential prerequisite to develop cogent models to understand the spatio-temporal organization.

Streszczenie:
Spiking model neurons can be set up to respond selectively to specific spatio-temporal spike patterns by optimization of their input weights. It is unknown, however, if existing synaptic plasticity mechanisms can achieve this temporal mode of neuronal coding and computation. Here it is shown that changes of synaptic efficacies which tend to balance excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs can make neurons sensitive to particular input spike patterns. Simulations demonstrate that a combination of Hebbian mechanisms, hetero-synaptic plasticity and synaptic scaling is sufficient for self-organizing sensitivity for spatio-temporal spike patterns that repeat in the input. In networks inclusion of hetero-synaptic plasticity that depends on the pre-synaptic neurons leads to specialization and faithful representation of pattern sequences by a group of target neurons. Pattern detection is robust against a range of distortions and noise. The proposed combination of Hebbian mechanisms, hetero-synaptic plasticity and synaptic scaling is found to protect the memories for specific patterns from being overwritten by ongoing learning during extended periods when the patterns are not present. This suggests a novel explanation for the long term robustness of memory traces despite ongoing activity with substantial synaptic plasticity. Taken together, our results promote the plausibility of precise temporal coding in the brain.

Streszczenie:
Public security incidents have been increasingly challenging to address with their new features, including large-scale mobility, multi-stage dynamic evolution, spatio-temporal concurrency and uncertainty in the complex urban environment, which require spatio-temporal association analysis among multiple regional video data for global cognition. However, the existing video data organizational methods that view video as a property of the spatial object or position in space dissever the spatio-temporal relationship of scattered video shots captured from multiple video channels, limit the query functions on interactive retrieval between a camera and its video clips and hinder the comprehensive management of event-related scattered video shots. GeoVideo, which maps video frames onto a geographic space, is a new approach to represent the geographic world, promote security monitoring in a spatial perspective and provide a highly feasible solution to this problem. This paper analyzes the large-scale personnel mobility in public safety events and proposes a multi-level, event-related organization method with massive GeoVideo data by spatio-temporal trajectory. This paper designs a unified object identify(ID) structure to implicitly store the spatio-temporal relationship of scattered video clips and support the distributed storage management of massive cases. Finally, the validity and feasibility of this method are demonstrated through suspect tracking experiments.

Streszczenie:
Task-oriented scene data in big data and cloud environments of a smart city that must be time-critically processed are dynamic and associated with increasing complexities and heterogeneities. Existing hybrid tree-based external indexing methods are input/output (I/O)-intensive, query schema-fixed, and difficult when representing the complex relationships of real-time multi-modal scene data; specifically, queries are limited to a certain spatio-temporal range or a small number of selected attributes. This paper proposes a new spatio-temporal indexing method for task-oriented multi-modal scene data organization. First, a hybrid spatio-temporal index architecture is proposed based on the analysis of the characteristics of scene data and the driving forces behind the scene tasks. Second, a graph-based spatio-temporal relation indexing approach, named the spatio-temporal relation graph (STR-graph), is constructed for this architecture. The global graph-based index, internal and external operation mechanisms, and optimization strategy of the STR-graph index are introduced in detail. Finally, index efficiency comparison experiments are conducted, and the results show that the STR-graph performs excellently in index generation and can efficiently address the diverse requirements of different visualization tasks for data scheduling; specifically, the STR-graph is more efficient when addressing complex and uncertain spatio-temporal relation queries.

Bag&rsquo
settlements have been a part of dynamic spatial systems, which seasonally depend on and reciprocally interact with Anatolian towns throughout centuries. This thesis presents the transforming setting of &lsquo
bag&rsquo
settlements related to changing values and meanings through an ontological assessment. Therefore, the thesis assumes that the main values of spatial organization, farmland pattern, ecological formation, settlement character, socio-cultural structure and lifestyle of the inhabitants constitute the unique entity of &lsquo
bag&rsquo
settlements. In time, the pressures of changing socio-economic conditions have destroyed the interaction between Anatolian towns and &lsquo
bag&rsquo
settlements. The thesis explains the changing role of &lsquo
bag&rsquo
settlements, changing and conflicting land uses and the loss of unique &lsquo
bag&rsquo
character in the case of Mugla-Karabaglar. Karabaglar is a &lsquo
bag&rsquo
settlement in the southwestern Turkey, where Mugla town residents live seasonally. It is a third grade natural site, the unique character, the natural and cultural assets and the lifestyle of which must be preserved. However, with transformation of the main values, meanings and practices, Karabaglar could no longer perpetuated its initial existence of being. Karabaglar is significant for two reasons: it has natural and cultural beings that need to be conserved, and as it still goes through a transformation process. The master&rsquo
s thesis of the author evaluated conservation plan of Karabaglar. Differently, this doctoral thesis evaluates the dynamics of the spatio-temporal transformation process in Karabaglar. It presents the changing role and significance of Karabaglar within the town-country continuum. This situation brings forward the conservation problematic of the character, landscape and uniqueness of Karabaglar. Within this respect, the thesis contributes to the literature of &lsquo
bag&rsquo

Organization by compartmentalization is a general property of natural systems coordinating biological events in space and time. Over the past three decades, it has been demonstrated that multiple micrometric to nano-metric sub-compartments co-exist at a single membrane level. Such membrane organization seems critical for most all cell bioactivities and therefore critical for development and survival of potentially all living organisms. Plants respond to pathogens by activating highly regulated plasma membrane-bound signalling pathways. Plant plasma membrane (PM) displays a great diversity of compartments, but underlying functions and molecular mechanisms governing such organization are not well understood. To get insight in how and why plant PM is compartmentalized, we choose to study the plant PM nanodomain goup 1 REMORIN during the interaction between N. benthamiana and the Potato Virus X (PVX). Using a multidisciplinary approach we decipher a molecular mechanism involved in defining REMORIN PM domains localization. Making mutants we provide a functional link between REMORIN PM organization at single molecule level, its phosphostatus, regulation of plasmodesmata permeability and PVX cell-to-cell movement restriction. We then provide evidences that during N.benthamiana PVX sensing, PM organization appears critical for the modulation plant defence mechanisms and cell signaling. This study provides a unique mechanistic insight into how tight control of protein spatio-temporal organization at PM level is crucial to confer membrane domains identity and functionality

This thesis work is devoted to visualization by optical microscopy of thermo- and photo-induced phase transitions, in switchable spin transition single crystals. The study of crystals of the compound [{Fe (NCSe) (py) 2} 2 (m-bpypz)] showed the possibility to control reversibly the dynamics of the HS/LS interface through a photo-thermal effect generated by an irradiation of the whole crystal or using a spatially localized light spot on the crystal surface. The investigations of the effect of the light intensity on the transition temperature have highlighted the importance of the coupling between the crystal and the thermal bath in these experiments. Concomitantly, we developped a reaction diffusion model allowing to describe and iden-tify the relevant physical parameters involved in the control of the movement of HS/LS interface. The obtained results are very encouraging and reproduce the main features of the experimental data. However the origin of the interface orientation observed by the optical microscopy in the crystal of the compound [{Fe (NCSe) (py) 2} 2 (m-bpypz)] re-mained mysterious, and needed an elastic approach to be handled. At this end, an electro-elastic model including the volume change at the spin transition was developed. By taking into account for the anisotropy of the unit cell deformation at the transition, we were able to reproduce quantitatively the experimental HS/LS interface orientation. This result confirms the crucial role of the lattice symmetry and its elastic properties in the emergence of a stable interface orientation. The last part of the thesis is devoted to the investigation of photo-induced effects at very low temperatures (~10K). There, we visualized for the first time the real time transformation of a single crystal under LIESST (Light Induced Excited Spin State Trapping) effect as well as its subsequent relaxation at higher temperatures. We have also studied the light induced instabilities through investigation on the LITH (Light Induced Thermal Hysteresis) loops. Around the latter, a fascinating world made of nonlinear effects, and patterns formation emerged, recalled the well known Turing structures. These results lead to new horizons that will give access to new theories and original experimental observations that will enrich the topics opening the new avenues to study of nonlinear phenomena in spin crossover solids

Streszczenie:
The nucleus is an organelle of central importance to the mammalian cell. However, our understanding of the organizations and dynamics of many nuclear structures and processes remains inadequate, largely due to the difficulty in probing them in situ, with single-molecule sensitivity as well as ultra-high resolutions in space and time. In this dissertation, we develop approaches to interrogate, through imaging and modeling, the spatio-temporal organizations and dynamics of two key nuclear processes: gene expression and DNA replication. We first describe a novel fluorescence imaging technique, named reflected light-sheet (RLS) microscopy, that is capable of detecting single molecules with superior signal-to-background ratio inside the mammalian nucleus. By selectively illuminating only a thin section of the nucleus using a light-sheet reflected off a miniature mirror, RLS microscopy combines the capabilities of 3D optical sectioning, fast imaging speed, and applicability to single, normal-sized adherent cells. As demonstration, we apply RLS microscopy to directly monitor the DNA binding dynamics and spatio-temporal colocalization of single mammalian transcription factor molecules in live cells. By measuring their diffusion constants, DNA-bound fraction, as well as in vivo residence times, we resolve three distinct modes of their interaction with genomic DNA. Furthermore, we take advantage of the prowess of RLS illumination for super-resolution microscopy (SRM), attaining resolution improvements critical for resolving nuclear structures with high molecular density. Using RLS-SRM, we map the distribution of RNA polymerase II (RNAP II), the main workhorse of mammalian transcription, which has been proposed to heterogeneously cluster into spatially discrete foci termed “transcription factories”. Leveraging on the photophysics of rhodamine-based dyes, we also develop an image analysis algorithm capable of accurately counting the copy number of RNAP II molecules in these foci. We found that majority of the foci originate from single RNAP II molecules, which exhibit no significant clustering within the length scale of the reported diameters of “transcription factories”, arguing against the prevalent existence of such “factories” as previously believed. We also super-resolve in the mammalian nucleus individual DNA replication domains (RDs), and quantitatively characterize their physical morphology and propagation on a global scale. Our results support a spatio-temporal model for RD dynamics across different stages of S-phase, in which the progression of replicons along chromosomes as well as the nuclear lamina constrains the distribution of DNA synthesis sites and drives the spreading of RDs in specific spatial patterns. Lastly, to better understand the catalytic mechanism of DNA replication at the molecular level, we simulate the dynamics of DNA polymerase, whose catalytic action is accompanied by a large nucleotide-induced movement of its finger domain, using a Langevin-type Gaussian Network Model. Our model captures the induced conformational dynamics of the polymerase upon substrate binding, and reveals its close coupling to the advancement towards transition-state along the reaction coordinate. These results demonstrate the precise role of conformational dynamics in achieving catalysis of the polymerization reaction, and indicate that the mechanism for lowering the reaction barrier through conformational motion is encoded in the structural topology of DNA polymerase. Overall, the strategies developed in this dissertation pave the way for quantitative mapping and characterization of nuclear processes at unprecedented levels of detail, both in space and in time.

Streszczenie:
This thesis draws on David Harvey’s concept of “accumulation by dispossession” and an international political economy (IPE) approach centred on the institutional arrangements and power structures that privilege certain actors and values, in order to critique current capitalist practices of primitive accumulation by the global corporate extractive industry. The thesis examines how accumulation by dispossession by the global extractive industry is facilitated by the “free entry” or “free mining” principle. It does so by focusing on Canada as a leader in the global extractive industry and the spread of this country’s mining laws to other countries – in other words, the transnationalisation of norms in the global extractive industry – so as to maintain a consistent and familiar operating environment for Canadian extractive companies. The transnationalisation of norms is further promoted by key international institutions such as the World Bank, which is also the world’s largest development lender and also plays a key role in shaping the regulations that govern natural resource extraction. The thesis briefly investigates some Canadian examples of resource extraction projects, in order to demonstrate the weaknesses of Canadian mining laws, particularly the lack of protection of landowners’ rights under the free entry system and the subsequent need for “free, prior and informed consent” (FPIC). The thesis also considers some of the challenges to the adoption and implementation of the right to FPIC. These challenges include embedded institutional structures like the free entry mining system, international political economy (IPE) as shaped by international institutions and powerful corporations, as well as concerns regarding ‘local’ power structures or the legitimacy of representatives of communities affected by extractive projects. The thesis concludes that in order for Canada to be truly recognized as a leader in the global extractive industry, it must establish legal norms domestically to ensure that Canadian mining companies and residents can be held accountable when there is evidence of environmental and/or human rights violations associated with the activities of Canadian mining companies abroad. The thesis also concludes that Canada needs to address underlying structural issues such as the free entry mining system and implement FPIC, in order to curb “accumulation by dispossession” by the extractive industry, both domestically and abroad.

Streszczenie:
Born in England in 1861, Alfred North Whitehead turned to philosophy after a brilliant career in mathematics, where he developed a philosophical scheme based on experience as the ultimate unit of analysis, rejecting what he called the bifurcation between mind and nature that had dominated philosophical thought. He also invoked the idea of concrete experience to connect to American pragmatism, and especially to William James’s work. This chapter first provides an overview of Whitehead’s life and times before turning to his philosophical views. It examines Whitehead’s notion of atomism and his influence on organization studies. Finally, it discusses three aspects of events that may help lay foundations for an event-based organization theory inspired by Whitehead’s philosophy: events as spatio-temporal durations, the forming of events through mirroring, and the open structures of events.

Streszczenie:
During the 20th century, health inequalities among countries have increased. Several factors explain this pattern, such as immunization and massive antibiotherapy, but nutrition, housing and hygiene are key parameters for health improvement. This heterogeneity among countries is well illustrated by malaria, although disappeared from many high-income countries, is still endemic and prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. We question these differences and detail the recommendations proposed by the World Health Organization to tackle malaria. We investigate the optimal combination of actions to deploy in resource-limited countries and the best spatio-temporal window to target. We propose a new framework for health program management based on evolutionary biology approaches to tailor global programs, to improve their local efficiency and avoid resistance. Thus, we explore all components of the ecological niche of the parasite (human, vector and environment) and consider the magnitude of actions to deploy to reach its local.

Streszczenie:
The article presents some findings concerning multimodality, and the philosophical implications of these findings. One of the findings is that crossmodal illusions show that perception involves interactions among processes associated with different modalities. Patterns of crossmodal bias and recalibration reveal the organization of multimodal perceptual processes. Multimodal interactions obey intelligible principles, they resolve conflicts, and they enhance the reliability of perception. Multimodal processes also demonstrate a concern across the senses for common features and individuals, for several reasons such as the intermodal biasing and recalibration responsible for crossmodal illusions requires that information from sensory stimulation associated with different senses be taken to be commensurable. The commensurable information from different senses shares, or traces to, a common source since conflict resolution requires a common subject matter. One important lesson of multimodal effects is that an analog of the correspondence problem within a modality holds between modalities. Spatio-temporal unity, objectual unity, and integration are tied to the capacity to detect constancies and solve correspondence problems across modalities. Solving crossmodal correspondence problems requires a common modal or multimodal code that is shared among modalities.
