Mentha spicata, also referred to as Mentha viridis, is a member of the Lamiaceae family of medicinal plants that is valued for its capacity to produce and release secondary metabolites, mainly essential oils. The aerial components of this plant are used by various populations to create tea, and ethnopharmacological surveys carried out globally have revealed that this tisane has a range of effects. These acts are caused by several compounds found in M. spicata, the biological consequences of which have recently been demonstrated through experiments. M. spicata extracts and essential oils were i

Mint is one of the essential oil-producing plants. Essential oils of Mentha spicata L or spearmint are widely used as raw materials in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical preparations industries. The main components of spearmint are karvon, limonen, cineol, dihydrocarvol, myrcene, and 0.5% menthol. The components contained in spearmint have properties as herbal remedies. Urediniospores were collected separately from rust pustules on oregano (Origanum vulgare) and spearmint (Mentha spicata) plants purchased from retail stores in Gainesville, Alachua Co., FL, in April 2004 and March 2005. Morphological characteristics of the urediniospores from both hosts were consistent with descriptions of Puccinia menthae. Spearmint, peppermint (M. × piperita), oregano (O. vulgare), sweet marjoram (O. majorana), and Greek oregano (Oregano heracleoticum) were inoculated with urediniospore suspensions of each rust isolate in a series of cross-inoculation experiments. Mentha is one of the genera of the Lamiaceae family which can produce essential oils. Mentha species have antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, and the most active compound that plays a role is menthol. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of variations in the anatomical structure and oil glands of the leaves of two Mentha species as essential oil producers. This type of research was descriptive qualitative in the form of leaf anatomy observations using the fresh and whole mount preparations for longitudinal incisions and the paraffin method for transverse incisions. Prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca), a plant growth regulator used primarily in fruit trees to suppress excessive vegetative growth and to inhibit disease incidence, is known to inhibit dioxygenase enzymes and to inhibit GA biosynthesis. It induces genes for polyphenols synthesis. The objective of this project was to determine if the bioregulator Pro-Ca would alter the yield of essential oil, secondary metabolites, and growth in spearmint. Spearmint shoot cuttings from the same mother plant were used in this study. The plants were treated with 0, 125, 250, 375, and 500 mg/L a.i. of Pro-Ca over four
