In this study, the authors evaluated the spatial and temporal variability of rainfall over the central Pindus mountain range. To accomplish this, long-term (1961–2016) monthly rainfall data from nine rain gauges were collected and analyzed. Seasonal and annual rainfall data were subjected to Mann–Kendall tests to assess the possible upward or downward statistically significant trends and to change-point analyses to detect whether a change in the rainfall time series mean had taken place. Abstract The variability of summer precipitation in the southeastern United States is examined in this study using 60-yr (1948–2007) rainfall data. The Southeast summer rainfalls exhibited higher interannual variability with more intense summer droughts and anomalous wetness in the recent 30 years (1978–2007) than in the prior 30 years (1948–77). Such intensification of summer rainfall variability was consistent with a decrease of light (0.1–1 mm day−1) and medium (1–10 mm day−1) rainfall events during extremely dry summers and an increase of heavy (>10 mm day−1) rainfall events in extr

We study both the ex post and ex ante effects of climate risk on credit access for small producers of potato in Colombia. First, we explore the ex post effects that come after a drought, a climate shock that affects the production value of the crop. Second, we investigate the ex ante effects through the uncertainty surrounding future climate conditions, using rainfall variability as a proxy for that uncertainty. Finally, we analyze how these two effects interact to influence farmers’ use of credit as a coping mechanism for climate risk. We show that credit access (amount disbursed and number o

Climate-related variability in rainfall, temperature, and extreme weather (e.g., drought, flood, unseasonal frost) pose significant challenges to working land (i.e., range, forest, and agricultural) managers across the southeastern United States. This document outlines the type of risks that southeastern agriculture and forestry currently face and, in some cases, options to address these risks. Finally, this document looks forward to providing direction on the priority needs of Southeast working land managers and an outline of how the USDA Southeast Climate Hub will address those needs.

Like the rest of the Southern Africa region, Mozambique has been experiencing strong El Niño weather effects since 2023. These effects intensified later that year and are expected to continue until mid-2024. Characterized by above-average temperatures and below-normal rainfall, climate variability related to this phenomenon is considered one of the strongest drivers that impact agricultural production in Southern Africa. This brief focuses on several spatial aspects of the drought that impact community vulnerability, highlighting hot-spot areas that urgently require targeted intervention and a

The resilience of water supplies and the water environment to climate change and the impacts of drought are areas of concern for the UK. Definitions of resilience vary, but in this POSTbrief it is the ability of the water supply system to recover from shocks. Projected changes in weather patterns and climate (increased temperatures and greater variability in rainfall) will reduce water availability. Increased water demand due to population growth means that, without action, water shortages could occur in future. These will impact the environment, society and the economy.

In Colombia, as well as in South America, dry seasonal tropics have drought periods that can last for six months with less than 10% of mean annual rainfall (900-1150 mm). For livestock systems, this situation generates constraints in the quantity and quality of forage affecting productivity, protability and causing damage to natural resources (Figure 1). Within vegetative genetic resources, fodder trees are recognized for their adaptation to climate change and because they are a source of nutrients for herbivores, they are a topic that waits for improving knowledge about their contribution to

Malawi, a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa, is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Agriculture is the backbone of its economy, supporting more than 80% of the population, contributing 30% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and generating 80% of export earnings. The World Bank projects that, under a business-as-usual scenario, climate change could reduce Malawi’s GDP by 3–9% by 2030, 6–20% by 2040 and 8–16% by 2050. These losses are primarily attributed to infrastructure damages, including roads and bridges, and decreased labor productivity due to heat stress. Addit
