This case report illustrates two unusual cases of parapharyngeal schwannomas mimicking carotid body tumors in terms of characteristic vascular displacement. Carotid body tumors classically cause splaying of internal and external carotid arteries demonstrating the Lyre sign on imaging. Also interestingly, both of these cases were seen in younger ages and include cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma and vagal schwannoma. We report a 56-year-old male who presented with a solitary swelling in the right side of neck which was clinically diagnosed as a benign cystic lesion, hence complete excision of the lesion was done. In order to provide high-quality radiation therapy at the National Cancer Center of Belarus, a group of medical physicists developed the first local protocol in Belarus for radiotherapy treatment planning of head and neck tumors patients. The protocol contains grounded practice-oriented recommendations based on the long-term clinical experience of qualified medical physicists in treating patients with head and neck tumors for irradiation using modern linear accelerators.
