When the news moved online, journalists suddenly learned what their audiences actually liked, through algorithmic technologies that scrutinize web traffic and activity. Has this advent of audience metrics changed journalists' work practices and professional identities? This book documents the ways that journalists grapple with audience data in the form of clicks, and analyzes how new forms of clickbait journalism travel across national borders. Drawing on four years of fieldwork in web newsrooms in the United States and France, including more than one hundred interviews with journalists, the book reveals many similarities among the media groups examined—their editorial goals, technological tools, and even office furniture. Yet the book uncovers crucial and paradoxical differences in how American and French journalists understand audience analytics and how these affect the news produced in each country. American journalists routinely disregard traffic numbers and primarily rely on the opinion of their peers to define journalistic quality. Meanwhile, French journalists fixate on internet traffic and view these numbers as a sign of their resonance in the public sphere. The book offers cultural and historical explanations for these disparities, arguing that distinct journalistic traditions structure how journalists make sense of digital measurements in the two countries. Contrary to the popular belief that analytics and algorithms are globally homogenizing forces, the book shows that computational technologies can have surprisingly divergent ramifications for work and organizations worldwide.

In contrast to self-produced media like reversion stories, chapter 4 documents and assesses journalistic representations of Latino Muslims. In a post-9/11 media context, Latino Muslims received increased attention from journalists. It argues that these news stories have, however, reductively focused on “conversion” at the expense of more complex and diverse representations. Although much of this coverage has been reductive, it has generally not been overtly negative. An exception to this pattern is Spanish language news media, which has represented Latino Muslims in negative ways that echo the form but not the function of broader sets of orientalist images. Latino Muslims have responded by calling for boycotts and writing petitions to end the defamation of their identity group. The chapter argues that some of their responses are more reasonable than others and that they will require much broader support if these are to make any positive contributions to public discourse.

This introductory chapter elaborates on this study's premise and provides a brief overview of the use of unnamed sources in American journalism. It demonstrates how anonymity alters the underlying relationship among news sources, journalists, and audiences. In contrast to conventional attribution, the absence of a source's identity leads to unique risks and rewards that prove difficult to disentangle. Both arise from the bargain struck when a journalist grants anonymity: the identity of the source is withheld to obtain and distribute otherwise unattainable information. This loss of transparency exposes journalists who rely on unnamed sources to challenges over the accuracy of the information provided and the intentions of all those involved. What emerges is a set of extremes as unnamed sources contribute to journalism's greatest triumphs and its most shameful episodes.

Peter Capusotto y sus videos is an Argentinean satirical show that criticizes the entertainment industry in social and political terms. Hosted by actor and comedian Diego Capusotto, the popular show is broadcast on TV Pública, the state channel in Argentina. Through fictional characters and a documentary/journalistic style, Capusotto ridicules celebrity culture and targets social stereotypes. Chapter 5 analyzes the role of the show in deconstructing and questioning key aspects of the local urban identity reflected in popular culture, more specifically in rock music (rock nacional), a genre with a particular evolution and relevance in the country. Through the analysis of Bombita Rodríguez, Violencia Rivas, and Micky Vainilla, some of Capusotto’s most famous characters, this chapter illustrates how the show’s satirical approach demystifies Argentinean identities that exist within the realm of media spectacle while exposing sociopolitical tensions after the 2001 socioeconomic crisis and during the Kirchner era.

It is not hyperbole to proclaim that a crisis of legal legitimacy exists in the relationships between African Americans and the law and legal authorities and institutions that govern them. However, this legitimacy deficit has largely (but not exclusively) been documented through anecdotal evidence and a steady drumbeat of journalistic reports, but not rigorous scientific research. We posit that both experiences and in-group identities are commanding because they influence the ways in which black people process information, and in particular, the ways in which blacks react to the symbols of legal authority (e.g., judges’ robes). Based on two nationally-representative samples, this book ties together four dominant theories of public opinion: Legitimacy Theory, Social Identity Theory, theories of adulthood political socialization and learning through experience, and information processing theories, especially the Theory of Motivated Reasoning and theories of System 1 and System 2 information processing. Our findings reveal a gaping chasm in legal legitimacy between black and white Americans. More importantly, black people themselves differ in their legal legitimacy. Group identities and experiences with legal authorities play a crucial role in shaping whether and how black people extend legitimacy to the legal institutions that so much affect them.

Part II offers a number of proposals and suggestions for recovering meaning in social science research at the individual, institutional, and policy levels. These measures offer the prospect of many small ‘wins’ through which the system can be reformed, rather than one sweeping programme for change. This chapter addresses the identities of individual researchers and the research methodologies they use in their work, and encourages a different approach at the level of individual and group research practices and its outcomes. It argues for new scholarly identities and many different ways of fashioning them, in which research is one, but not the only, important practice. Teaching, outreach activities, and academic citizenship, it is argued, are also important aspects of scholarship. So too are thinking and reading in depth and breadth, writing textbooks and book reviews, journalistic pieces and blogs. Chapters 7 and 8 will address institutional and policy issues.

This chapter describes how the modernization and cultural transformation of Madrid and Spain during the First World War raised fears among conservative social critics and journalists that Spanish traditions and identity would be wiped out. These critics ascribed organilleros the same function as flamenquismo, that is, that of serving as bulwarks against the influence of jazz and modern “foreign” culture. Once seen as one of Madrid’s foremost public enemies, organilleros now started to be regarded with nostalgia and as a symbol of national identity. This new perception was reinforced as the organilleros’ reputation for harassing women was compared with that of Don Juan. Don Juan was not only one of Spain’s foremost literary myths, but his importance grew in the 1920s as debates about sexuality in Spain used Don Juan as a prism to analyze the sexual mores of Spanish society.

Branding the Beur Author analyzes mainstream media promotion of literature written by the descendants of North African immigrants to France (often called beurs). Launched in the early 1980s, conversations between journalists and ‘beur’ authors delve into contemporary debates such as racism in the 1980s and Islam in French society in the 1990s. But the interests of journalists looking for sensational subject matter also heavily shape the promotion and reception of these novels: only the ‘beur’ authors who use a realist style to write about the challenges faced by the North African immigrant population in France—and who engage on-air with French identity politics and immigration—receive multiple invitations to participate in interviews. Previous scholarship has taken a necessary first step by analyzing the social and political stakes of this literature (using labels such as ‘beur’ and/or ‘banlieue,’ to designate its urban, economically distressed setting), but this book argues that this approach reproduces the selection criteria deployed by the media that determine which texts receive commercial and critical support. By demonstrating how minority-based literary labels such as ‘francophone’ and ‘postcolonial’ are always already defined by the socio-political context in which such works are published and promoted, this book establishes that these labels are tautological and cannot reflect the thematic and stylistic richness of beur (and other minority) production in France.

This chapter examines the crisis following the announcement in 1997 that the Goal 2000 target would not be met and the contentious negotiations to recommit the ASNE to the aims of newsroom diversity and to recalibrate the hiring target for the year 2025. Identity politics continued to complicate efforts to advance the cause of social justice as women were finally added to the hiring initiative, but gay and disabled journalists were not. The ASNE demonstrated that racial assumptions continued to be deeply ingrained when a racist comedy act at the 2001 convention touched off a nationwide controversy. In addition, the chapter examines the devastating impact of the newspaper industry's declining fortunes on the cause of newsroom diversity during the first decade of the new millennium.
