The practice for journalists to present an identity and brand the self on social media has become common across many newsrooms, yet its practice is still poorly understood. Focusing on journalists’ self-representations on the social network site Twitter, this study aims to address the lack of empirical understanding through an analysis of the identities which political journalists present on their Twitter profile pages. A total of 679 accounts of parliamentary press gallery journalists in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom were analyzed, with a focus on various textual and visual pieces of professional and personal information. The article develops scales of corporate and personal identity, finding that UK and Canadian journalists most strongly differentiate between personal and corporate identities. Differences across countries are linked to political and economic aspects of the respective media systems.

This study is an investigation of identity and Italian-Canadian youth in the post-World War Two period. A thorough examination of the limited secondary literature on this topic, as well an analysis of the works of authors, journalists and others published in the Toronto-based magazine Eyetalian, presents the intricacies of hybrid identity for young Italian Canadians. The various essays and other materials published in Eyetalian suggest the complex nature of identity which arises from generational differences, a search for identity (and what it means to be Italian Canadian), and the reproduction of traditional cultural values. The analysis proposes that identity for youth of Italian-Canadian descent is extremely elaborate, heterogeneous and fluid.

This article examines the Sui Generis magazine (1995-2000), one of the most relevant gay press magazines in Brazil. We study the importance of this publication and the field of journalism in terms of producing and reproducing representations and processes of identities and relations of gender and sexuality. The methodology involves a discursive reading of editorials, cover stories and reader letters published between January 1995 and March 2000, as well as a restructuring of journalistic work and daily practices in newsrooms through interviews with reporters, columnists and editors. We reached the conclusion that choosing a policy of visibility based on outing and concepts of gay "identities" and "communities" allowed the magazine to create specific and more valued ways of what homosexuality is, which leads to a critical reflection on what these policies have achieved, and what their limits and tensions are.O artigo propõe uma investigação da revista Sui Generis (1995-2000), título do segmento especializado designado como “imprensa gay” brasileira. In an increasingly multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual media environment, ethnic media are an important part of the public sphere, and the process in which ethnic discourse is produced deserves attention. This article advances Husband’s work on ethnic media as communities of practice by exploring ethnic media of young diaspora. Just as ethnic communities are heterogeneous across ethnic groups, depending on immigration history, demographics, and communication infrastructure, among other factors, ethnic media as communities of practice are never homogeneous and lineal practices. The case of Korean media in Vancouver and Los Angeles, one of the most rapidly growing ethnic media sectors in North America, suggests two new identities – cultural identity and institutional identity – in addition to the journalists’ subjective identities, which Husband discussed. These two identities that are specific to Korean media confirm diversity within communities of practice and suggest the variations to be considered in the broader discussion of ethnic media as communities of practice.

Journalism has an important role in making political participation visible to the public. In representing the voices of the public, journalism produces discourses on democratic engagement that tell us a great deal about the norms of how these discourses conceive of practices of political engagement. The aim of this article is to study the ways in which speaker identities are given to and taken by migrant activists participating in Swedish radio interviews. Employing Goffman’s concept of footing, this article shows that there are conflicting speaker identities that the activists are adopting and are given by the framework of the radio interviews. The main conflict in how the speaker identities are made up is based on the negotiations around how the activists are talking about themselves or about others. The article further shows how talking about others in a public discourse such as journalism requires speakers to make difficult choices in how to represent oneself as a speaker, and that such choices might stand in conflict with a news discourse’s preferred authentic and experiential identity of its sources.

The article explores the role of women’s magazines in the negotiation of later life identities, focussing on the treatment of fashion and dress. It locates the analysis in debates about the changing nature of later years with the emergence of Third Age identities, and the role of consumption in these. Focussed on the treatment of fashion and age, it analyses four UK magazines: three chosen to represent the older market ( Woman & Home, Saga, Yours), and one to represent mainstream fashion ( Vogue). It is based on interviews with four editors and analysis of the content of the magazines. The article analyses the media strategies that journalists use to negotiate tensions in the presentation of fashion for this group and their role in supporting new formations of age. This article forms part of ‘Media and the Ageing Body’ Special Issue.

Bulgarians “are touching” their history — the role of historical past in the Bulgarian national revivalThe nineteenth-century national revival in Bulgaria can be described, above all, as aperiod of building national identity and ethnic community ties. The origin of such aprocess was the fact that Bulgarians decided to turn to their long forgotten past. The process of discovery, learning and becoming aware by “touching” using all the senses symbolically began with the Paisij Chilendarski’s text. It became the key element of along list of Bulgarian literary and journalistic works that were ingrained in the ideology of rebirth and revival and laid strong foundations for the first Bulgarian historical novel by Lyuben Karavelov, published between 1873 and 1874.Bugari „dodiruju” istoriju — uloga istorijske prošlosti u bugarskom nacionalnom preporoduDevetnaestovekovni nacionalni preporod je pre svega period građenja bugarskog nacionalnog identiteta iosećaja etničkog zajedništva. Osnova tog procesa bilo je okretanje ka, sasvim zaboravljenoj, istorijskoj prošlosti, čije je otkrivanje, upoznavanje, „dodirivanje” svim čulima, simbolički započeto tekstom Pajsija Hilandarskog, postalo ključni element niza bugarskih književnih ipublicističkih tekstova kao dela preporodne ideologije, akao rezultat toga Luben Karavelov godine 1873–1874 objavljuje prvi bugarski istorijski roman.

The attack on the Bataclan Theatre in Paris in November 2015 arguably targeted a transnational community of youths able to move and convene freely; as such, it was an attack on the liberal and cosmopolitan core of the European project. Cafébabel (cafebabel.com), a multilingual current affairs online magazine co-funded by the European Union, is intricately linked to this project. This article consequently investigates how Cafébabel, in the aftermath of the attack, appropriated the notion of ‘Génération Bataclan’ from a front page of Libération and how this may be seen as a constructive intervention in the relations between terrorism and journalism in Europe. Cafëbabel’s coverage was, it will be argued, linked to efforts to reflect and/or construct a generational and transnational ‘cosmopolitan identity’ within journalistic practices that largely can be called participatory. Following this, the article consequently argues for seeing Cafébabel’s coverage as instances of constructive news as participation in the European project, which is related to how the outlet perceives the news by national legacy media as un-constructive (conflict, scepticism, nationalism, sensationalism, etc.). In analysing a sample of articles from Cafébabel following the Paris attacks, the article consequently employs a theoretical foundation that merges elements from writings applying three distinct concepts, namely, constructive journalism, journalism as practice and cosmopolitanism.

Interpretations of ethnic and cultural nationalism in South Asia have been marked by a tension between “primordialist” and “modernist” approaches. In keeping with the more influential general works on ethnicity and nationalism (Gellner 1983; Anderson 1983; Horowitz 1985; Tambiah 1989), modernist interpretations now generally prevail in scholarly accounts. These works usually trace the roots of ethnic and cultural nationalism to the social and religious reform movements of the nineteenth century, which are seen as indigenous responses to the impact of colonial rule. The emphasis given to particular aspects of colonialism varies, but includes cultural influences, such as Western education; economic factors, including changes in class structure; and political changes, such as the extension of representative government. These modernist interpretations, however, are not entirely unchallenged within scholarship, and primordialist views, which draw more direct links between ethnic nationalism and precolonial identities, remain strong in political, journalistic, and popular forums.

While there is growing interest in professional identity construction (e.g. Clarke et al., 2009), little is known about how stigma may influence the development of professional identity. Professional identity is defined as one’s professional self-concept based on attributes, beliefs, values, motives, and experiences (Ibarra, 1999; Schein, 1978). Professional identity construction under conditions of stigmatized cultural identity presents an interesting puzzle. Professional roles are defined as prestigious and provide the role holder with autonomy (Benveniste, 1987) and, often, a degree of privilege. However, stigmatized persons are often accorded little prestige and/or privilege because their identities are tainted. Thus, the purpose of our research is to build and enrich theory around professional identity construction by investigating the development of professional identity under conditions of stigmatized cultural identity. To accomplish this goal, we study narratives written by 20 prominent African American journalists (Terry, 2007) who discuss what it means to be both Black and reporters.

In this paper I use postmodernism to explore Antjie Krog’s engagement with post-Apartheid identities in Country of My Skull. These identities, often complex and multiple, are mediated in the process of nation-building. I take the exercise of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as metonymy for the nation-building project, and I argue that Krog quite deliberately chose an ambiguous and complex genre to represent equally ambiguous and complex identities. One of the salient features of postmodernism is its anti-systemic, anti-form impulse, and the form that Krog uses refuses to be conscripted into any single conventional form. Dominated by testimonies of victims and perpetrators of apartheid violence, the form also bears aspects of autobiography, novel, poetry and journalistic snippets interlaced with quotes from psychoanalysts and philosophers. From time to time, anecdotes, fairytales, myths and legends are interpolated into the narrative to remind the reader of the porous borders between fiction and reality.

Abstract. For the first time since the reunification of Germany, right-wing activists and politicians have attempted to take over a university city, i.e. a place where the highly educated, creative, cosmopolitan, innovation-oriented groups should be more likely to question irrational populism than elsewhere. An internal organizational problem – in this case: the renaming of the University of Greifswald – which normally should be solved with on-board resources, was shifted to a regional political level as a dispute over Ernst Moritz Arndt. Arndt was one of the most aggressive nationalists in German history, whose name was given to the university under fascist rule in 1933. The dispute was emotionalized by demonstrations and letters to the editor of the regional newspaper, taken up by groups and parties predominantly from the right-wing spectrum. It was brought into a populist form, and pushed with high journalistic effort into the regional public sphere as a Pomeranian identity crisis. In spite of the enormous pressure from outside and the numerous attempts at intimidation, it is admirable that the University Senate members decided to discard the name of Arndt – 63 years after the end of World War II. Although the result of the renaming was noted nationwide, its dramatic circumstances and background were not presented. However, this would have been necessary in order to show how strong right-wing radicalism already is in some regions, by which coalitions it is further enhanced, how strongly it is favoured by the spatial over-centralisation of state institutions, and what a university has to afford in order to assert itself successfully in such an environment.

On December 11, 2011, a plebiscite was held in Pará proposing to create two separatist states, Carajás and Tapajós, out of the state of Pará. The public voted against both projects. This article analyzes the narrative identities found on the front pages of O Liberal and Diário do Pará newspapers about the plebiscite in Pará. Depth Hermeneutics (DH), as proposed by Thompson (2011), was used as the methodological reference. DH emphasizes the object of analysis as a meaningful symbolic construction requiring interpretation. Narrative analysis, as proposed by Motta (2007), was the main research technique used to highlight the movement of construction of journalistic (discursive) characters. The narrative identities built by the two newspapers showed that both were against the creation of the new states, but for very different reasons. The flag of Pará was the main object used to induce the idea of unity. The choice of words is one of important aspects in writing articles in printed media. Creative language use in lifestyle magazine may create interest for readers. The purpose of this research is to analyze the language use in sex articles in Cosmopolitan Indonesia. Launched in 1997, Cosmopolitan Indonesia is the first licensed Indonesian women lifestyle magazine and the first women magazine in Indonesia that openly discusses sex. This marks a change in Indonesian printed media. Before the publication of Cosmopolitan, sex and intimacy were only discussed in non-public spheres. Although the topics are discussed openly, the magazine uses special terms to describe man and women genital organs. After 22 years, Cosmopolitan Indonesia is still using the same terms in its sex articles, despite the fact that other women magazines are now discussing sex more openly and most of them are using the medical terms to describe genital organs. The focus of this research is mainly on what factors that consider Cosmopolitan Indonesia to use special terms in sex articles. The inclusion of a source identity is something that must be applied to a news. A journalist can maintain the confidentiality of sources of confidential information, the identity of victims of sexual crimes, and perpetrators or victims of underage crimes. This study uses a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis research method by performing data retrieval techniques using primary data and secondary data. Primary data are the results of field observations, interviews. While secondary data is in the form of documentation. The object of research is the Radar Bogor Journalist. The results showed that journalists from Radar Bogor had implemented a journalistic code of ethics in the inclusion of the identity of the informant on a report. This is seen from the attitude of conscious journalists to maintain the confidentiality of the identity of informants such as victims of immoral crimes, victims of sexual abuse, underage victims, and victims of sexual abuse. This is feared by the psychological sources who receive social sanctions from the community. Keywords: The News; Inclusion of identity; Journalistic Code of Ethics.

Taking an intersectional approach, this study conceptualizes how the complex subjectivities of Ethiopian-Israeli women journalists – who contend with dual exclusion and discrimination (racial and gendered) – emerge in their everyday work experiences. Thematic analysis of narrative interviews with 12 Ethiopian-Israeli women journalists reveals a complicated picture of their professional experience derived from the intersection of their gender and racial identities. They face barriers to integrating into the profession and the challenges of tokenism, but they also find sources of strength in their professional experience through the advantages of Ethiopian femininity and the opportunity to play advocacy roles. I argue that while their societal positioning renders them marginalized within dominant structures, it also allows them to confront oppressive dominant structures. Their journalistic identity empowers them by linking their perceived advocacy role deriving from their marginal Ethiopian identity with their Israeli identity.

The migration of newspapers to a digital domain The migration of newspapers to a digital domain The decline of newspapers has caused academics to study its problematic migration from an analogue to a digital environment. Yet while the need for change has become pressingly urgent, news organizations often tend to focus on dwindling circulation as a mere economic or technical problem, which can only be solved by developing a new business model or by inventing an electronic equivalent of the paper. This article argues that the transformation from print to digital in the news business requires a rather profound analysis of the changing conditions of (independent) journalism. It subsequently offers a heuristic for news organisations wanting to reposition themselves vis-à-vis old players (readers, advertisers) and new players (platform providers, search engines) in the media business. Analysis and heuristic combined should help news organizations to answer the question what kind of organization they want to be and what economic, technical and organizational choices may shape their migration to a digital domain.

Times have changed since Warren Breed published his famous study, ‘Social Control in the Newsroom’. Today, corporate owners are requiring newsroom managers to adopt marketing strategies, launching many television newsrooms into routines similar to those of their newspaper-turned-online colleagues. This exploratory case study presents data from 6 months of observations of digital training in a legacy television newsroom, including interviews with the managers who underwent the training, conversations with newsroom staff, and a survey of that staff, all to explore how managers moderate between these corporate and journalistic needs by learning what corporations require as marketing-based multiplatform production routines and by helping journalists to reconcile their traditional role identities within these new newsroom requirements.

This article considers the main results of identity research on Siberian urban history. The author identifies the seven most extensively developed topics in studying the history of urban identities. The first topic focuses on the formation of a city’s general identity in the initial stages of its formation. Historians aim to reveal the mechanisms of general city identification, as well as the sources, criteria, and values underlying the identity of a particular city. The second topic includes studies of the drift of urban production and industrial identities in the context of industrialization: quite often, it was industrial markers that determined the direction of a city’s identification. The third topic covers the study of ethnicity in urban spaces. Historians reveal the reaction of ethnicity to processes of adaptation and acculturation. The fourth issue concerns the study of gender identity in the context of the masculine orientation of urbanisation processes. Historians focus on the study of mechanisms underlying the dominance of masculine culture in the urban environment and the development of the socio-cultural significance and functions of women, their limitations and emancipation. The fifth topic concerns the identification of social stratification in urban systems. Urban history gains new knowledge through studies which examine urbanisation as a factor of differentiation in urban society and classical structures of society (estates and classes), as well as in works on the identification of the middle class, social mobility, the formation of marginal groups, and vernacular culture. The sixth topic is expanded by works dealing with the historical imagology of the city. Images are forms of identity representations in cultural and public discourses. Therefore, in studying them, urban history today makes a practical contribution to the development of modern urbanism. The seventh topic focuses on the historiographical analysis of the identification research strategies of urban historians themselves. In the process of revealing urban identities, the research model should be based on a wide range of sources of a predominantly narrative nature and the anthropological approach. It seems appropriate to use the potential of memoirs, oral history, periodicals, fiction, and journalistic literature. Studies on the identity palette of Russian urban history go beyond purely historical issues and are based on deep interdisciplinary interaction.

PurposeSocial media has been widely adopted by politicians and political parties during elections and routine times and has been discussed before. However, research in the field has so far not addressed how a political leader's private or official social media account affects their message, language and style. The current study examined how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu uses his private Facebook account, compared to his use of his official Facebook page “Prime Minister of Israel.”Design/methodology/approachIn this study, the author identified the differences between these two digital entities using in-depth content analysis based on all posts (N = 1,484) published on the two pages over a 12-month period between 2018 and 2019.FindingsThe study’s findings indicate that Netanyahu regularly uses his personal page to address topics that are not represented on his official page, such as mentioning and attacking political rivals, presenting political agenda, and criticizing Israeli journalists and media organizations. Netanyahu's private Facebook account is also used to comment on personal events such as the criminal indictments he is facing and family affairs.Originality/valueThe findings highlight the need to investigate the different identities that politicians maintain on social media when they use personal or official accounts, sometimes on the same platform. The medium matters, yet the author also discovered that a leader's choice of account and its title are also important.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/OIR-01-2021-0004.
