The spaces we inhabit, the urban fabric, the interplay between the two: this architectural thesis seeks to explore the many components of a mixed-use project, its relationship to the city, and its use by potential inhabitants. Through this mixed-use project, many aspects of similar commercial/residential projects in the Washington, D.C. are challenged and rethought. It explores the impact of design on the way people live and work in a city. Research and analysis include architectural language, the workplace, the urban dwelling, the relationship of these to each other, and the relationship of these to the surrounding context. What follows is the documentation of these explorations, from site analysis to final drawings, and the beginnings of an understanding of how architecture can impact the working and living environments.

There have been many predictions about what the future could be. Films such as, “1984”, “Brazil”, and “Blade Runner” as well as books like William Gibson’s fantasy novel “Neuromancer” are but a few examples of such vision. Unfortunately, all have envisioned the future as a cold bleak place where architecture is but a machine and lost people live in sterile environments with no contact with the outside world. Is this what we really believe the future to be? Are we victims of technology of do we control our own fate?

The performance of Captor media integration into the aerobic zone of an activated sludge wastewater treatment system operated at low MCRTs was evaluated using a pilot scale Virginia Initiative Project (VIP) process. Two separate trains were operated, one with Captor media incorporated into the aerobic zone of the system, referred to as an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IF AS) system, and the other as a control system, i.e., with no media in the aerobic reactors. The wastewater used for this research was pumped from a main municipal sewer of the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority Collection System. The TKN of the wastewater was supplemented by the addition of urea to maintain the influent ammonia concentration around 55 mg/L as nitrogen. Sodium acetate was added to maintain the influent COD around 450 mg/L and Sodium bicarbonate was added to maintain the pH in the aerobic zone around 7. The system was operated at MCRTs of 1.7, 1.0 and 0.3 days with the operating temperature around 12 C.

Resumo:
This research presents theoretically an automated vehicle merging control which is an important subsystem of AHS. The goal of the system is to automatically control the vehicle merging from ramp to the AHS lane in an efficient, smooth and safe manner. The entire merging process is divided the a speed adjustment stage and a lane merging stage. Three important parameters; acceptability, availability and pursuability are analyzed to characterize the AHS lane gap features. Three control guidance laws (linear, optimal and parabolic speed profile) are developed to describe the desired behaviors of the merging vehicle based on the merging quality and safety consideration. The desired states of the merging vehicle are generated through the outer loop by specified control guidance law. The tracking errors compared with desired states are eliminated by the proper design of controllers in the inner loop. Both longitudinal and lateral controller are designed using the sliding mode control theory which can handle the model nonlinearities and uncertainties of the vehicle dynamics. Two new sliding mode methods are proposed in the design of the lateral controller. The proposed system is evaluated and validated through computer simulations. The simulation results show that system performance is satisfactory under the various merging conditions for a smooth, efficient and safe merging. The system also supplies a basis for the further research on the multiple merging control system and the lane changing control system.

In this dissertation, we first present a unified treatment of compact moment problems, both the truncated and full moment cases. Second, we define the lower and upper functions V±(ð₁,... ð n) on the convex hull of the curve Γn = {(t,.·.,tn): t ∈ [0,1] } for each positive integer n. Explicit formulas of these functions are derived and applied to the study of the subnormal completion problem in operator theory. Last, we show that certain power functions are the building blocks of completely positive functions; by our definition, these functions are the continuous functions on the interval [0, 1] that map each Hausdorff moment sequence of a probability measure into another one.
