Decision support and business intelligence systems have been increasingly adopted in organizations, while understanding the nature of affecting factors on such adoption decisions need receiving much academic interest. This article attempts to provide an in-depth analysis toward understanding the critical factors which affect the decision to adopt business intelligence (BI) in the context of banking and financial industry. In this regard, it examines a conceptual model that shows the impacts of different technological, organizational, and environmental factors in the decision to adopt BI by a firm. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for data analysis and test the relevant hypothesis. The results of this article which are derived from theoretical discussion of hypothesizes show that from nine hypothesized relationships—perceived tangible and intangible benefits, firm size, organizational readiness, strategy, industry competition and competitors absorptive capacity—affect BIS adoption in the surveyed cases.

Purpose Despite the important role of distrust in predicting the intention to use, existing literature has not studied the impact of distrust on the buyer’s integration with suppliers and their e-procurement usage in the B2B context, creating major gaps in the e-procurement theory. The purpose of this paper is to fill the gaps in the literature by examining the role and impact of distrust in the e-procurement context. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through a web-based survey of purchasing professionals in the USA. ANOVA was used to compare the level of distrust among companies. In addition, the measurement model and hypotheses were tested using the structural equation modeling method. Findings Empirical findings indicate if buyers have uncertainty or negative expectation on the reliability and capability of the supplier in e-procurement systems, they would tend to hesitate to use e-procurement for purchasing. Furthermore, distrust also inhibits buyers from strengthening the supplier integration through sharing operational and logistics information and collaborating in new product development and purchasing process. Research limitations/implications This paper discovers the vital role of distrust in the e-procurement context. Distrust has a significant impact on a company’s cooperation and commitment with business partners. Additionally, to improve the supplier integration, it is important not only to use e-procurement applications but also to have a mechanism to lower the buyers’ distrust level in e-procurement systems. Practical implications Realizing the important role of distrust, e-procurement vendors could improve the supplier selection process by allowing buyers to review the supplier’s reliability and capability, and to interact with the supplier before making any online purchase. Vendors could also build a better supplier verification system and collaborative mechanism to reduce buyers’ distrust issues. Originality/value Despite the important role of distrust in predicting the intention to use, existing literature has not studied the impact of distrust on the buyer’s integration with suppliers and their e-procurement usage in the B2B context, creating major gaps in the e-procurement theory. This paper fills the gaps in the literature by examining the role and impact of distrust in the e-procurement context.

A conceptual framework originating within the Operations Research literature is presented as a means of informing researchers about how they might better understand and exploit knowledge management/sharing/transfer in business-to-business knowledge networks. Preliminary analysis of a recent Indian case study supports the utility of this framework through the identification of facilitators (information systems, mediators) and barriers (distance, organisational) to successful knowledge flow between organisations both domestically and internationally. The ongoing challenge is to increase our understanding of how firms can better balance knowledge protection and sharing such that managers involved in these inter-organisational exchanges can maximise the benefits to both sides of the dyad; especially in emerging markets such as India with different market characteristics, institutional development and business customer behaviours.

Information systems and technologies (IST) are the essence of up-to date organizations, and changes in this field are occurring at an uncontrollable pace, interrupting traditional business models and forcing organisations to implement new models of business. Social media represent a subset of these technologies which contribute to organizational transformation. However, by itself, the adoption of social media does not imply such a transformation; changes in the organization's culture and behaviour are also needed. The use of IST in an appropriate and integrated way with the organization's processes will depend on an individual and collective effort. For organizations to take advantages of these technologies within the context of Social Business, a comprehension exercise is required in how to demonstrate their usefulness. To this end, this paper will provide a comprehensive view of a new context of labour faced by traditional organizations i.e. social business supported by mobile IST – mobile_Create, Share, Document and Training (m_CSDT) – in order to improve the well-being of these organizations through the collective intelligence and agility dimensions.

It develops and empirically tests a conceptual model for assessing the impact of BIS routine and innovative usage on firm performance the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the data collected from 181 SMEs we analyzed how BIS usage influences firm performance using the PLS-SEM method.FindingsThe paper provides empirical insights about how BIS routine and innovative usage affect firm performance.Practical implicationsThe results provide instrumental insights for managers and solution providers to help them understand the influence of various determinants to more effectively conclude the post-adoption process in SMEs.Originality/valueThis study represents important progress in the authors’ theoretical understanding of the role of BIS routine and innovative usage across different BIS partial impacts on firm performance dimensions.

Workflow management systems (WfMS) are used to automate and facilitate business processes of an enterprise. To simplify the administration, it is a common practice in many WfMS solutions to allocate a role to perform each activity of the process and then assign one or more users to each role. Typically, access control for WfMS is role-based with a support of constraints on users and roles. However, merely using role and constraints concepts can hardly satisfy modern access control requirements of a contemporary enterprise. Permissions should not solely depend on common static and dynamic principles, but they must be influenced by the context in which the access is requested. In this paper, we focus on the definition and enforcement of the context-sensitive constraints for workflow systems. We extended the common role-based constraints listed in literature with context-sensitive information and workflow specific components. Also, we propose a mechanism for enforcing such constraints within WfMS.

In order to improve the accuracy of automatic translation of business English, an optimized design of business English translation teaching platform is proposed based on the logistic model combined with deep learning. After using the logistic model to analyze the semantic features of business English translation, the deep learning model is used to segment and mine English images, and the automated lexical feature analysis of business English translation is carried out by using contextual feature matching and adaptive semantic variable finding methods to extract the amount of correlation features between words and vocabulary and to correct the differences in translation in a specific business context to improve the accuracy of English translation. The software design of the platform is carried out under the logistic model, and the platform is mainly divided into a vocabulary database module, an English information processing module, a web interface module, and a human-computer interaction interface module. The test results show that the accuracy of business English translation using this method is good, and the automatic translation capability is strong.

Business networks have appeared as a reaction to changes taking place in the world economy and logistic networks can be considered as examples of such networks. The approach proposed in the paper is based on the idea to represent the business network members with services provided by them, and to achieve interoperability via application of the SOA standards. The approach is based on usage of such technologies as Web services, ontology, and context management. Web services enable interoperability at the technological level. Ontologies are used for description of knowledge domains and enable interoperability at the level of semantics. The purpose of the context is to represent only relevant information from the large amount of the information and the application of the approach is demonstrated on the case study from the area of dynamic logistics. The considered problem takes into account a continuously changing problem environment and requires nearly real-time solving.

Purpose Changes in workflow relevant data of business processes at run-time can hinder their completion or impact their profitability as they have been instantiated under different circumstances. The purpose of this paper is to propose a context engine to enhance a business process management (BPM) system’s context-awareness. The generic architecture provides the flexibility to configure processes during initialization as well as to adapt running instances at decision gates or during execution due to significant context change. Design/methodology/approach The paper discusses context-awareness as the conceptual background. The technological capabilities of business rules and complex event processing (CEP) are outlined in an architecture design. A reference process is proposed and discussed in an exemplary application. Findings The results provide an improvement over the current situation of static variable instantiation of business processes with local information. The proposed architecture extends the well-known combination of business rules and BPM systems with a context engine based on CEP. Research limitations/implications The resulting architecture for a BPM system using a context engine is generic in nature and, hence, requires to be contextualized for situated implementations. Implementation success is dependent on the availability of context information and process compensation options. Practical implications Practitioners receive advice on a reference architecture and technology choices for implementing systems, which can provide and monitor context information for business processes as well as intervene and adapt the execution. Originality/value Currently, there is no multi-purpose non-proprietary context engine based on CEP or any other technology available for BPM, which facilitates the adaptation of processes at run-time due to changes in context variables. This paper will stimulate a debate between research and practice on suitable design and technology.

Design/methodology/approach – Analysis and evaluation of the management systems’ audits findings, conducted in the last ten years by two major Romanian accredited certification bodies. Findings – A complete rethinking of audits is required. The audit methods will increase, allowing auditors to use various combined methods, based on audit purposes and on the needs of the audited organization. Originality/value – The present paper is describing the current situation, found in management systems auditing and also trying to assess and predict future development possibilities.

Information systems execute increasingly complex business processes, often across organizations. Blockchain technology has emerged as a potential facilitator of (semi)-autonomous cross-organizational business process execution; in particular, so-called consortium blockchains can be considered as promising enablers in this context, as they do not require the use of cryptocurrency-based blockchain technology, as long as the trusted (authenticated) members of the network are willing to provide computing resources for consensus-finding. However, increased autonomy in the execution of business processes also requires the delegation of business decisions to machines. To support complex decision-making processes by assessing potential future outcomes, agent-based simulations can be considered a useful tool for the autonomous enterprise. In this paper, we explore the intersection of multi-agent simulations and consortium blockchain technology in the context of enterprise applications by devising architectures and technology stacks for both off-chain and on-chain agent-based simulation in the context of blockchain-based business process execution.

Improving the competitiveness of domestic enterprises is based on the introduction of advanced business and management information technologies. The current business environment is increasingly causing an urgent need for managers to expand the horizon of digital vision not only for current, but also for future management of the company. Today, it is not enough for a Manager to simply have proper professional knowledge in certain functional areas of activity and have a broad managerial Outlook. A modern Manager should be able to initiate the introduction and use of advanced information systems and technologies in almost all implemented business processes of his company. When preparing the article, the materials of research conducted at a number of domestic industrial enterprises were used. Conclusions and main provisions are based on the results of analysis of real practice of implementation and operation of corporate information systems. The results obtained in the course of the research, including the opinions of experts, which were made by employees of industrial enterprises, were used in conducting targeted work to establish a priority list of the most relevant and significant professional areas of knowledge and professional qualities that can help a modern Manager achieve success in the implementation and practical use of corporate information systems. The main result of the research should be considered the formation of such a priority list.

Resently, it has been proven that the communication and information technologies have become an integral part of any modern information systems, since they increase the level of business competitiveness during use the operational management information on time.These information technologies ensure the work’s continuity of information systems for a long period of time with the possi¬bility of quick adaptation of the business to the digital transformation’s conditions, which reduce the formation’s cost of information resources.The role of such components of information technology as software, databases and computer networks, which, in turn, are key components of high-quality information systems, is disclosed.

Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are an essential platform to provide infrastructures that support widespread collaboration between organizations. These service-oriented systems are a new context for software developers, who must now be equipped with new development methods and technologies. This new context has specific requirements, such as better collaboration and communication between business users and software engineering across organizations and increased agility of the development and maintenance processes to better respond to newly emerged or changed requirements. In this paper, the authors present a research agenda that looks at the use of a novel software engineering discipline—model-driven engineering. By switching the focus from low-level technical details to high-level problem-specific details, model-driven engineering addresses challenges in the development of service-oriented systems. This paper particularly discusses the approach to the development of service-oriented systems based on business process modeling, which integrate business vocabularies and rules in different stages of the development lifecycle. Here, model-driven engineering can provide many promising solutions.

Increasing global competition and advances in Internet technologies have led organizations to consider e-business strategies. However, evolving e-business strategies have been identified as a critical issue faced by corporate planners. The relevance and the use of IS (Information Systems) strategy planning practices in the context of e-business have been argued among researchers. In this paper, the authors investigate whether organizations can successfully improve the IS value in the e-business context by suitably extending and modifying IS planning practices. To achieve this objective, the authors use a longitudinal case study of an Indian automotive manufacturer to critically evaluate ‘why’ and ‘how’ e-business strategies differ from IS strategies. The authors compare and analyze five important planning parameters (strategic alignment, technological environment, formalization, role of the IS function, and implementation planning) and the IS value of both IS and e-business contexts. The research reveals that the e-business contexts are characterized by significant changes in planning parameters. Extending IS planning experiences and proper management of these parameters results in successful e-business strategies. The paper is concluded with a set of implications for deploying e-business strategies in developing countries and directions for future research.

Through this paper, the authors wanted to highlight how important and useful are ERP systems for any company that requires internal auditing. ERP - Enterprise Resource Planning systems are intelligent software that can be adapted to the needs of each company allowing the combination of all business processes in a single database. They are also a way of internal control over the data entered and employees. From an internal audit perspective, these systems can be considered an appropriate solution because they provide an opportunity to more effectively manage internal and external audit risks. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the satisfaction of internal audit needs with the help of integrated systems. These systems facilitate the operation of data and their security. Another objective was to analyse how much these systems can reduce certain risks. The risks of significant misstatement may be mitigated by these systems, and any operation introduced may be analysed, verified and approved / disapproved. Therefore, a quantitative research was conducted, using the questionnaire as an analysis tool. Based on the answers received, the profile of the respondents was outlined and at the same time a statistical analysis was performed. The results obtained demonstrate that respondents appreciate ERP systems’ utility. They perceive a reduction in financial and operational risk but also an increase in technical risk. Of course, these technical risk issues can be mitigated by the internal audit department's ability to assess and manage any issues that may arise. However, respondents also emphasize the need of training employees in using the system and understanding the data generated by it. Without well-trained employees, performance at the company level, as well as at the internal audit level would not be achieved. It is essential to have training at employees’ level who manage data in an ERP system. This training is also valid for internal auditors who can recommend this system to reduce audit risks.

The article considers the essence of the concept of "food system", which characterizes all activities related to the production, processing, transportation and consumption of food. Food systems affect every aspect of human existence and therefore cannot be limited to the agricultural sector, but affect our personal health, our families and communities, as well as the health of the environment, our economy and our culture. The involvement of society in the formation of proposals for vectors of food systems in Ukraine in the context of global trends in the national dialogue on food transformation and preparation for the UN Summit on Food Systems 2021 is justified. The interrelation of food systems and all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, which should be taken into account in the balanced food system of Ukraine, which needs to preserve and increase its food potential in the light of global trends, is revealed. Innovative approaches to the transformation of food systems are proposed. First of all, it concerns such priority areas as healthy nutrition, introduction of environmentally friendly production technologies and resilience to market instability and availability of food for all. The key directions and specific proposals for measures highlighted in the draft Roadmap are considered, namely: increasing attention to digitalization of processes in the agricultural sector, the formation of the State Agrarian Register as a tool to ensure transparency in certain mechanisms of agricultural policy and others. Attention is paid to the need to comply with the established requirements for business processes and food safety, awareness of producers, especially in conditions where the responsibility for product safety is put on the manufacturer. A model of HoReCa recovery after the pandemic by involving small producers and the development of craft technologies is proposed. The need for a balanced approach to the adaptation of the European Green Course for Ukraine, in particular on energy efficiency and sustainable resource management. The process of change initiated in 2009, which is transversal to the organization, recommends a set of actions, including the definition of business processes, to determine the organizational “AS IS” important to the establishment of “TO BE”. Simultaneously, the Air Force is studying concepts related to enterprise architecture while trying to deepen the relationship between mission, vision, goals, objectives, strategy, tactics, policy, business rules, and process architecture. In this context, considering important creating and identifying a way to validate the consistency between Enterprise Architecture and Process Architecture important, the authors propose the creation of a value matrix, representing objectives and processes associated with a set of rules for its creation and update.

The main aim of this paper is to identify and specify factors that influence business analytics. A factor in this context refers to any significant characteristic that defines the environment in which business analytics and business in general are conducted. Factors and their understanding are essential for the quality of final business analytics solutions, given their complexity and interconnectedness. Factors play an extremely important role in analytic thinking and business analysts’ skills and knowledge. These factors determine effective approaches and procedures for business analytics, and, in some cases, they also aid in the decision to delay a business analytics solution given a situation. This paper has used the case study method, a qualitative research method, due to the need to carry out investigation within the actual business (company) environment, in order to be able to fully understand and verify factors affecting analytics from the viewpoint of all stakeholders. This study provides a set of 15 factors from business, company, and market environments, including their importance in business analytics.

While some are reluctant to admit it, we are witnessing a fundamental shift in the way that advanced militaries conduct their core business of fighting. Increasingly autonomous ‘unmanned' systems are taking on the ‘dull, dirty and dangerous' roles in the military, leaving human war fighters to assume an oversight role or focus on what are often more cognitively demanding tasks. To this end, many military forces already hold unmanned systems that crawl, swim and fly, performing mine disposal, surveillance and more direct combat roles. Having found their way into the military force structure quite rapidly, especially in the United States, there has been extensive debate concerning the legality and ethicality of their use. These topics often converge, but what is legal will not necessarily be moral, and vice versa. The authors' contribution comes in clearly separating the two parts. In this paper, they provide a detailed survey of the legality of employing autonomous weapons systems in a military context.

In the Business Intelligence Systems (BIS) use context, the well-researched dimension of intensity of use is not broad enough to capture its meaningful use. The authors therefore investigate the whole spectrum of its use that encompasses effective utilization. The post-adoption research of Information System (IS) use is still under-researched; the study therefore brings novel insights to this area. The authors have conceptualized three dimensions of BIS use that capture the intensity of BIS use, the extent of BIS use, and BIS embeddedness. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to determine convergent and discriminant validities proving construct validities, based on survey data gathered from BIS users in medium and large sized organizations. The results of our study provide sound evidence for apprehending these three constructs as different conceptualizations. This work adds to the literature by emphasizing the role of post-adoptive behavior that can lead to greater and effective utilization in the studied BIS environment, and potentially to a better organizational performance.

Abstract Housing markets as well as the overall economy develop unevenly. Business cycles are the result of the diverse dynamics of their development. The housing market, as one of the components of economic systems, is influenced by business cycles, at the same time affecting them as well. It should be noted, however, that the special nature of this market may determine a different course of housing market cycles in comparison with changes in business cycles. The aim of the paper is to identify similarities and differences in the shaping of the housing market cycle and the business cycle. The analysis will be conducted on the basis of experience from the Polish market and selected Western markets.

The key areas of business transformation have been identified, allowing flexible restructuring of the company management process. Methods and techniques for assessing digital transformation in organizations that are tested for both quantitative and qualitative indicators have been considered. It has been proven that considering digital transformation is advisable not only in the context of studying business models in the development of digital technologies, but also from the point of view of what economic effects are achieved through digital transformation and how justified it.

Purpose This paper aims to draw on a family business perspective to explore the historic accounting records of an Italian liquorice juice business. The applicability of the three-circle model of family business systems to such an historic context is examined. Design/methodology/approach Using archival records, the Cassa accounting book of the business is studied. Its transactions are examined to distinguish family and business items over the period from 1875 to 1920. Findings Through an analysis of the accounting records, the family, ownership and business systems are shown to overlap more than typically expected in a contemporary setting. Originality/value Contemporary literature suggests the three-circle model of a family business is relatively static, but it has not been applied to an historic context. This study suggests that the model can be applied in historic studies, but it is not static over time with its elements needing refinement.

In today’s environment characterized by business dynamism and information technology (IT) advances, firms must frequently update their enterprise information systems (EIS) and their use policies to support changing business operations. In this context, users are challenged to maintain EIS compliance behavior by continuously learning new ways of using EIS. Furthermore, it is imperative to businesses that employees of a functional unit maintain EIS compliance behavior collectively, due to the interdependent nature of tasks that the unit needs to accomplish through EIS. However, it is particularly challenging to achieve such a collective level of EIS compliance, due to the difficulty that these employees may encounter in quickly learning updated EIS. It is, therefore, vital for firms to establish effective managerial principles to ensure collective EIS compliance of a functional unit in a dynamic environment. To address this challenge, this study develops a research model to explain collective EIS compliance by integrating theoretical lens on social context and performance management context with social capital theory. It proposes that social context, an organizational environment characterized by trust and support, positively affects collective EIS compliance by developing business–IT social capital that enhances mutual learning between business and IT personnel. Furthermore, the performance management context, an organizational environment characterized by discipline and “stretch,” is seen to have a direct and beneficial effect on collective EIS compliance as well as an indirect, moderating effect on the causal chain among social contexts, business–IT social capital, and collective EIS compliance. General empirical support for this research model is provided via a multiple-sourced survey of managers and employees of 159 functional units of 53 firms that use EIS, as well as their corresponding IT unit managers. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.
