With the advent of direct current (DC) loads such as LED lighting, IT equipment, electric vehicles, and DC powers generated from renewable energy sources, low voltage DC (LVDC) distribution system is becoming a hot issue. One of the hurdles in the LVDC distribution system is arc flash at the contact points that occurs during the circuit is opening. Unlike alternating current, direct current has no zero points and sustains constantly. Therefore, there is a risk of electric fire due to continuous generating arcs when the load current is interrupted with an existing electrical contact type circuit breaker. Recently, the concept of a hybrid circuit breaker that takes advantage of traditional electrical contact type switch and the arcless semiconductor switch has been proposed, but how to cooperatively operate the two switches has become an issue. This paper analyzes the principle of a hybrid circuit breaker for blocking LVDC current and proposes a gate drive controller for it. Through 400V class LVDC cutoff test, the operation of the proposed hybrid circuit breaker is verified and the characteristics are analyzed.

Electrical resistivity technique has become a popular alternative tool by the geotechnical engineers in subsurface investigation. This study presents the influence of soil electrical resistivity value (ERV) due to the different types of electrical resistivity array used in practice. The dissimilarity of ERV was become a popular debate by the engineers which posses less fundamental knowledge in this area. In the past, the theory of electrical resistivity technique was less being discovered by the engineer which creates lots of black boxes during the utilization of electrical resistivity method (ERM) in engineering purposes. Hence, the result which produced from the ERM was difficult to deliver in a sound of definitive ways due to lack of knowledge and experienced of most engineers. Hence, this study presents the influence of soil ERV due to the different types of array used with particular reference to as Dipole-dipole and Pole-dipole. A line of electrical resistivity imaging was performed on small embankment of sandy and lateritic soil with different types of array using ABEM SAS (4000) equipment. Three in line of soil samples were tested for moisture content (w) test immediately after the electrical resistivity data acquisition was completely measured. Moreover, particle size distribution test also was performed for all soil samples in order to support the findings. It was found that the ERV was never be the same for each types of array used even on the same particular location of the survey line. However, it was found that there was a consistent relationship between ERV and moisture content for both types of soil tested which can be represent by ERV 1/w. Hence, it was found that ERV produced was relative to the types of array used during the field measurement. Each types of array were applicable to be used in subsurface profiling and its selection was subjected to the target of interest.

In recent years, electrical resistivity method (ERM) has widely being applied as an alternative tool in engineering, environmental and archeological studies. A global image of groundwater seepage problem was difficult to obtained using conventional geotechnical method due to the efficiency of cost, time and result coverage. This study was conducted using electrical resistivity survey in order to investigate the potential of the problematic zone due to the groundwater seepage problem. ABEM SAS 4000 equipment set was used in during the resistivity data acquisition stage. Six (6) resistivity spread lines (SP) were performed across the slopes area using 2-D electrical resistivity imaging. The raw data was processed using RES2DINV and SURFER software for 2-D and 3-D subsurface image. Interpretation of electrical resistivity results was verified using the existing borehole and geochemistry results. Geochemistry results analyses were used Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) for determining cation and Ion Chromatography (IC) is for anions. Anion elements were studied consists of chloride, bicarbonate, nitrate and sulfate while cation elements consists of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. All the elements were analyzed by using Piper Diagram to determine geochemistry facies in the groundwater. It was found that low resistivity value (ERV) which associated to groundwater (10 ~ 100 Ωm) can be found starts from the ground surface (0 m) to a greater (> 10 m) depth of the subsurface profile. The finding of the study water seepage can be categorized as Ca-HCO that indicator a typical of shallow fresh groundwater. The finding of the study is important to determine source process of water seepage on that area. This study has successfully demonstrates that the application of ERM with supporting borehole and geochemistry data was able to provide a comprehensive results due to the groundwater leakage detection.

Oregon utilities are replacing their portfolios of traditional fossil fuel generation with renewable generating sources. Stepping away from carbon-producing energy will leave a deficit of on-demand power, resulting in decreased reliability. To overcome these technical challenges, utilities must maximize the use of their present dispatchable resources. One such resource is the Portland General Electric (PGE) Dispatchable Standby Generation Program (DSG), which is an aggregated 105 MWs of distributed generation (DG). These resources are brought on-line when there is a critical need for power. Resources are added to the program if a transfer trip scheme is in place or a modeling study reveals that the feeder load is at least three times the generator capacity. If the load-to-capacity ratio were lower, more assets could be added to the DSG program. To investigate the impacts of lowering the DG load-to-capacity ratio on existing distribution feeders, we use Open-Source Distribution System Simulator (OpenDSS). We modeled the Oxford Rural feeder by converting a utility CYME database to instantiation files using several MATLAB programs. A MATLAB control program varies the load-to-capacity ratio of the OpenDSS feeder model and monitors the generator behavior immediately following a fault. We analyzed the results to determine the ideal load-to-capacity ratio that prevents unintentional islanding. The results show that the instantaneous (50) relay element settings dictate both the minimum load-to-capacity ratio and the maximum DG capacity. The present three-to-one ratio is very conservative and can be reduced. Additional dispatchable resources include a five MW battery-inverter system currently used as grid-back up. The battery is grid-tied to a 12.4 kV feeder making it an ideal candidate for conservation voltage reduction (CVR). Using the same feeder model, we investigated the effects of lowering the system voltage to the allowable minimum using injections of reactive power. A lower system voltage reduces the load at peak times. Conversely, increasing the voltage prevents generation conflicts. To determine the benefit of CVR by VAr-injection on the Oxford Rural feeder, we created a MATLAB optimization program to output the optimal feeder voltage for reduced system power. We use a Simulink feedback model to determine the appropriate reactive power needed to achieve the voltage change. We analyze the system model to reveal that the feeder is ideal for CVR but the system capacity must be increased to achieve the maximum power reduction.

This dissertation covers the commissioning and testing of an aircraft's constant frequency alternator as the power supply for the Blue Parrot radar. The Blue Parrot is an X-band radar which forms part of the navigation and weapon-aiming system onboard the Buccaneer S-50 SAAF aircraft. The radar set uses a source of three-phase power at 400 Hz, which the constant frequency alternator can supply with the aid of certain auxiliary systems. The auxiliary systems include a prime mover, blower fan and a telemetering system. The prime mover has high starting currents which were reduced significantly by the use of a soft-starter. During testing, the constant frequency alternator started overheating and a blower fan was selected based on its thermal requirements. Significant cooling of the constant frequency alternator's case temperature was achieved by the use of a blower fan and shroud. The generator control unit monitors and regulates all parameters on the unit except for case temperature and blower fan pressure. A telemetering system was designed and built to monitor and display these parameters.

The strength of the high-end retail industry has traditionally been in marketing and branding while management and operational efficiency lagged behind. In the face of changing client demographics and increased competition, improving operations through better data management and utilization could prove promising. In this work, we attempt to do so by focusing on a neglected area in high-end retail - management of the sales associates. Our first finding is the existence of a disconnect between the data collected and the data required for better control of the associates. Recognizing the gap, we sidestep it by tapping the knowledge of many experienced sales associates through field work. This knowledge is then funneled back to assist in modeling client behavior. The dynamics between an associate and his clients are modeled using an evolution model with stochastic client behavior. We show that under certain conditions, the optimal policy for an associate is a quasi-concave policy. In addition, we provide a methodology that would enable the associates to capture the full potential of a client while at the same time, allow management to reduce the variability in customer service within the store. The computational results indicate that such a mechanism, when compared to the commonly practiced policies, can achieve a substantial lift in revenue generated. In addition, the results also provide managerial insights and expose some common misconceptions.

This thesis investigates the distributed information and detection of a binary source through a parallel system of relays. Each relay observes the source output through a noisy channel, and the channel outputs are independent conditional on the source input. The relays forward limited information through a noiseless link to the final destination which makes an optimal decision. The essence of the problem lies in the loss of information at the relays. To solve this problem, the characteristics of the error curve are established and developed as a tool to build a fundamental framework for analysis. For understanding, the simplest non-trivial case of two relays, each forwarding only a single binary digit to the final destination is first studied. If the binary output constraint is removed and the output alphabet size for one relay is M, then no more than M + 1 alphabet symbols are required from the other relay for optimal operation. For arbitrary channels, a number of insights are developed about the structure of the optimal strategies for the relay and final destination. These lead to a characterization of the optimal solution. Furthermore, the complete solution to the Additive Gaussian Noise channel is also provided.

The Ku-band SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT scatterometer (QuikSCAT) operated continuously from 1999 to 2009. Though its primary mission was to estimate global ocean winds, QuikSCAT has proven useful in a variety of geophysical studies using land backscatter measurements. The end of the primary QuikSCAT mission in 2009 has prompted interest for continuing the QuikSCAT land dataset with other scatterometers. The Oceansat-2 scatterometer (OSCAT), launched in 2009, is a viable candidate for continuing the QuikSCAT time series because of the similarities of both sensors in function and design. An important difference in the sensors is that they operate at slightly different incidence angles. Continuing the time series requires careful cross-calibration of the two sensors. Because the sensor datasets overlapped by only a few weeks in late 2009, the amount of simultaneous data is insufficient to describe temporal and locational variations in the relative calibration, or difference between QuikSCAT and OSCAT measurements. To overcome this limitation, we perform direct and model-based comparisons of temporally-disjoint QuikSCAT and OSCAT global land measurements to describe the relative calibration. Using homogeneous rainforest targets, we also identify drift and azimuthal biases in the OSCAT dataset and present suggestions for removing them. The relative calibration is found to vary locationally by several tenths of a decibel over certain regions. Evidence is presented that suggests the relative calibration is dependent on environmental factors such as vegetation density and freeze-thaw status and results from the different incidence angles of the measurements.

Automated vehicles promise to be one of the most constructive inventions of late as they promote road safety, fuel efficiency, and reduced time road travel, by decreasing traffic congestion and workload on the driver. In a platoon (which is a method of grouping vehicles, which helps increase the capacity of roads by managing the distance between vehicles by using electrical and mechanical coupling) of such automated vehicles, as in automated highway systems (AHS), tracking of inter-vehicular spacing is one of the significant factors to be considered. Because of the close spacing, computer-controlled platoons with inter-vehicular communication, which is the concept of adaptive cruise control (ACC), become open to cyber security attacks. Cyber physical and cyber attacks on smart grid systems in the electricity market have been a focus of researchers, and much work has been done on that front. However, cyber physical (CP) attacks on autonomous vehicle platoons have not been examined. Thus this research entails the survey of a number of vehicle models used in different works pertaining to longitudinal vehicle motion and analysis of a special class of cyber physical attacks called false data injection (FDI) attacks on vehicle platoons moving with longitudinal motion. In this kind of attack, an attacker can exploit the configuration of any cyber physical system to launch such attacks to successfully introduce arbitrary errors into certain state variables so as to gain control over the system. So here, an n-vehicle platoon is considered and a linearized vehicle model is used as a testbed to study vehicle dynamics and control, after false information is fed into the system.

An important part in developing the power gridis maintaining the older parts of the system. This reportexamines the reliability of disconnectors ASEA NUB/NUB-Bin the electrical power grid in order for maintenance to beoptimised. Different mathematical models were used to analyseerror statistics of the disconnectors. This is used to obtain animage of the disconnectors life cycle. The report concludes thatASEA NUB 420/2000 have a life expectancy of 20 years and NUBB245/4000 are expected to last for 30 years. It also concludes thatthe amount of data used in this project is insufficient and does notgive a correct representation of the lifespan of the disconnectors.

This thesis presents a novel power side-channel DAC (PS-DAC) which is constructed from user-controllable short circuits in FPGAs and which manipulate overall system power through dynamic power dissipation. Alternately, similar PS-DACs are created using shift-register primitives(SRL16E) which manipulate system power through switching logic, for means of comparison with short-circuit-based PS-DACs. PS-DACs are created of various sizes using both short-circuit-based and shift-register-based methods. These PS-DACs are characterized in terms of output linearity,monotonicity, and frequency distortion. Applications explored in this thesis which use PS-DAC technology include a Simple Power Analysis (SPA) side-channel transmitter, and a frequency watermarking application. These applications serve as proof-of-concept for PS-DAC use in sidechannel communication applications.

Cloud based approach for remanufacturing is becoming a new technical solution for sustainable management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This paper presents a service-oriented framework of a Cloud Based Remanufacturing System (CBRS) for WEEE. In remanufacturing of WEEE, disassembly plays an important role. However, complete disassembly is rarely an ideal solution due to the high disassembly cost, with the increasing customization and diversity, and more complex assembly processes of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). Selective disassembly focusing on disassembling only a few selected components is a better choice. In this paper, a Q-Learning based Selective Disassembly Planning (QL-SDP) approach embedded with a multi-criteria decision making model is developed. The multi-criteria decision making model is built according to the legislative and economic considerations of specific stakeholders of WEEE. And the QL-SDP approach is used to achieve optimized selective disassembly planning. An implementation example has been used to verify and demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the approach. The developed QL-SDP approach is designed as a service implemented in the presented CBRS for WEEE.

Abstract Parametric stabilization of a single inverted pendulum has been extensively studied using the Mathieu equation and its corresponding stability diagram. The inverted single pendulum may be stabilized using parametric excitation at a specified frequency and amplitude given by a narrow stable region in the Mathieu diagram. Coupled pendula with parametric excitation or corresponding resonant systems have been studied from mathematical view point (Cesari, 1959; Gambill, 1955; Richards, 1983), from electrical view point (Sato, 1962a; Sato, 1962b; Sato, 1971; Sato, 1975) and from mechanical view point (Sato, 1995). Coupled pendula with parametric excitation have been studied within a limited region by some researchers, including the authors. A study of inverted coupled pendula with parametric excitation has not been performed as far as the authors know. Usually it is assumed that inverted coupled pendula are unstable in the absence of any other stabilizing mechanism such as feedback. One question is whether the inverted coupled pendula could be stabilized only by parametric excitation? The present paper gives an affirmative answer to this question in a limited and finite region. The stability is also examined using the differential equations and other methods.

Broadly speaking, a simple electrical diagram of Asco´ I and Asco´ II power nuclear plants could be two power supply bus bars for general equipment classified No-1E, three power supply bus bars class No-1E for the Reactor Coolant Pumps (RCP) and two more bus bars classified 1E for safety related equipment. In normal operating mode, all the five power supply bus bars class No-1E are connected to the main generator (GP1) through two unit transformers (TAG1/2), while the two class 1E power supply bus bars are always connected to an external 110 kV power grid through two auxiliary transformer (TAA1/2). The main generator supplies power to an external 400 kV grid through the main transformer (TP1). The main circuit breaker is placed between the high voltage side of the main transformer and the 400 kV grid. With this configuration, the appearance of an abnormal condition that originates the trip of the main generator and the opening of the main circuit breaker from the external network, involves an electric transfer of the supply bus bars connected to the turbo generator to the external 110 kV power grid. The electric transfer to the external 110 kV power grid will be only possible if the frequency and voltage values are within the allowed range allowed by the grid’s protective relays. Two kinds of electrical transfers are possible: fast transfers and slow transfers. It will be necessary then to evaluate the limit values of voltage and frequency of the power grid that makes the electrical transfer possible in each case. In order to obtain the limit values previously mentioned, the electric system of the plant has been modeled. Different scenarios have been analyzed, taking into account the dynamic behavior of the system components and the delay of the protective relays actuation, verifying the electrical transfer for those situations. This analysis will give enough information to take the correct decisions for future design modifications, and it will assure that the electrical transfer will be done always with success.

Many transducers use mechanical strain measurements as their sensing method. We are proposing a mechanical strain measurement technique based on a change in the electrical impedance and frequency response of a piezoelectric film in a certain frequency. This piezoelectric transducer can be fabricated on top of substrate for measuring surface stress. This technique is provided with analytical and numerical models. Coupled field finite element simulations in COMSOL and Coventorwareare employed to confirm the measurable alteration in electrical impedance of the film due to applied normal and transverse stress. Piezoelectric material impedance measurement can be a precise and low power method to sense minuscule strains in micromechanical structures. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of this technique at micro-scales.

A novel method for the manufacturing of electric microconductors for semiconductor and other devices is presented. The method brings together three technologies: controlled (on demand) printing, laser curing, and the employment of nanoparticles of matter, possessing markedly different properties (here, melting point) than their bulk counterparts. A suspension of gold particles in toluene solvent is employed to print electrically conducting line patterns utilizing a modified on demand ink jet printing process. To this end, microdroplets of 80–100 μm diameters are deposited on a moving substrate such that the droplets form continuous lines. Focused laser irradiation is utilized in order to evaporate the solvent, melt the metal nanoparticles in the suspension, and sinter the suspended particles to form continuous, electrically conducting gold microlines on a substrate. The ultra fine particles in the suspension have a diameter size range of 2 – 5 nm. Due to curvature effects of such small particles, the melting point is markedly lower (400°C) than that of bulk gold (1063°C). Thermodynamic aspects of the effect of particle size on the melting and evaporation temperatures of gold and toluene, respectively, are discussed in the paper. The structure and line width of the cured line as a function of the laser irradiation power and stage velocity are reported in detail. Preliminary measurements of the electrical conductivity are represented.

Abstract The shear stresses of ER (Electro-rheological) suspensions are measured by changing a shear rate, amplitude and frequency of electric fields using rotational viscometer whose gap between electrodes can be changed. We use two ER suspensions which are called ERFC and ERFP. ERFC consist of cellulose suspended in silicone oil. The size of cellulose particles is typically about 10∼20 μm and a viscosity of silicone oil is 10mm2/s. Cellulose concentration is 20wt.% and the percentage of moisture content is 0.6%. ERFP contains highly sulfonated poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene) particles. An average particle diameter of ERFP is 9 microns and the water content is 2.0 wt.%. Unipolar sine-wave electric fields which is AC with DC bias and bipolar sine-wave electric fields without DC bias are used. The shear rates of 400 s−1 are employed. Amplitudes of the electric fields are 0.4 and 0.8 kV/mm and DC component is 1.0 kV/mm for unipolar sine-wave electric fields. Amplitudes are between 1.0 and 2.5 kV/mm for bipolar sine-wave electric fields. The frequency of the electric fields is changed from 0.1 to 100 Hz. Dependence of the shear stress on electrical excitation frequency is investigared.
