Background:Physical education (PE) classes provide opportunities for children to be active. This study examined the associations between specific environmental characteristics (teacher characteristics; class size, duration and location; and lesson context) and elementary school-aged children’s moderate-to-vigorous activity (MVPA) during PE.Methods:Environmental characteristics and student activity levels were measured in 211 third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade PE classes in 74 Texas public schools using SOFIT direct observation.Results:Students engaged in less than half their PE class time in MVPA (38%), while approximately 25% of class time was spent in classroom management. Percent time in MVPA was significantly higher in outdoor classes compared with indoors (41.4% vs. 36.1%, P = .037). Larger (P = .044) and longer (P = .001) classes were negatively associated with percentage of MVPA and positively correlated with time spent in management (P < .001).Conclusions:Findings suggest that children’s activity may be influenced by environmental factors such as class size, location, and lesson contexts. These findings hold important policy implications for PE class organization and the need for strategies that maximize children’s MVPA. Further research is needed to test the causal association of these factors with student MVPA.

Globally, environmental impacts and insecticide resistance are forcing pest control organizations to adopt eco-friendly and insecticide-free alternatives to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, which affect millions of people, such as dengue, chikungunya or Zika virus. We used, for the first time, a combination of human odor-baited mosquito traps (at 6.0 traps/ha), oviposition traps (7.2 traps/ha) and larval source management (LSM) to practically eliminate populations of the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus (peak suppression 93.0% (95% CI 91.7–94.4)) and the Southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus (peak suppression 98.3% (95% CI 97.0–99.5)) from a Maldivian island (size: 41.4 ha) within a year and thereafter observed a similar collapse of populations on a second island (size 49.0 ha; trap densities 4.1/ha and 8.2/ha for both trap types, respectively). On a third island (1.6 ha in size), we increased the human odor-baited trap density to 6.3/ha and then to 18.8/ha (combined with LSM but without oviposition traps), after which the Aedes mosquito population was eliminated within 2 months. Such suppression levels eliminate the risk of arboviral disease transmission for local communities and safeguard tourism, a vital economic resource for small island developing states. Terminating intense insecticide use (through fogging) benefits human and environmental health and restores insect biodiversity, coral reefs and marine life in these small and fragile island ecosystems. Moreover, trapping poses a convincing alternative to chemical control and reaches impact levels comparable to contemporary genetic control strategies. This can benefit numerous communities and provide livelihood options in small tropical islands around the world where mosquitoes pose both a nuisance and disease threat.

Because of its hardness, wear-resistance, strength, and bending capabilities, beech wood is a widely-used hardwood in Europe. It is mainly used for furniture, floors, construction, veneer boards, and laminated wood. For such uses, the mechanical properties are very important, especially in cases of impact loads. The aim of this work is to analyse the mechanical properties of beech wood samples exposed to compressive force in the longitudinal direction based on different loading rates (in the range from 10 mm/min to 500 mm/min). Stress–strain diagrams were made with the experimental data, and mathematical functions were fit to them. Using the fit functions, the following properties of beech wood samples were determined: the stress and strain at the elastic limit; the maximum stress and associated strain; the modulus of elasticity; the tangent modulus; the specific energy of elastic strain; and the specific energy of plastic strain. The results showed that by increasing the loading rates, the elastic properties of beech wood increase, while the analysed plastic properties do not show a clear tendency of changes with increase of the loading rates.

Protective effects of five surfactants were investigated relative to the saccharification of lignocellulose using the impeded Michaelis-Menten model (IMM). The yield of total reducing sugar (Ytrs) and cellulase activity were indexed as the effect of surfactant. The IMM was used to fit the correlation between Ytrs and reaction time to obtain the index (Kobs,0) reflecting the accessibility between cellulose and lignocellulose and the comprehensive index (Ki) reflecting cellulase inactivation and non-specific site adsorption. Results showed that the strongest protective effect was found from polyoxyethylene (80) sorbitan monooleate, followed by rhamnolipid. The surfactants protected cellulase from inactivation and nonspecific site adsorption of lignocellulose in the saccharification, leading to enhanced cellulase activity, especially with respect to carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) and filter paper enzyme (FPase) activities. The maximum Ytrs was obtained when the CMCase activity was 136.2 U/mL, while the FPase and β-glucosidase activities should be as high and low as possible, respectively, under the optimized condition. These findings lay the foundation for improving the saccharification efficiency of cellulase and reducing the cost of saccharification of biomass cellulose.

One of the impacts of waste management is the presence of side-residual landfill waste that causes pollution potential of pollutants results in the form of decaying garbage leachate. This contamination occurs around the landfill Kebon Kongok impacting environmental degradation around the landfill area. To determine the extent to which and how the subsurface conditions around the landfill Kebon Kongok it will do the mapping and modeling using 3-dimensional (3D) geoelectrical method. The study was conducted on 3 pieces of lines are trending relative Southwest-Northeast. Each track has a length of 150m and retrieval of data using a dipole – dipole configuration-with spacing of 10m length. Resistivity measurements carried out with resistivitimeter GL-4100 GSound type and processed with software Res3Dinv. From the analysis it can be concluded that the entire study area has been contaminated by leachate polution, especially in the surface layer to a depth of 13.9 meters.

During the last decade, there has been a renewed interest in physicians´ working conditions at a time when health care is undergoing major structural and financial changes. Physicians report decreasing work satisfaction and at the same time increasingly contemplate on leaving their profession. Despite an increasing proportion of female physicians, they are underrepresented in management positions. Very often, female physicians also report worse personal health and less organisational influence than their male colleagues. Management programs have been viewed as an important vehicle to improve working conditions and career development for female physicians.

The aim of the present thesis was to evaluate the effects on individual health, professional development, perception of organisational structure and career development. Fifty-two female physicians participated in structured 1-year management programs. The control group consisted of 52 physicians not participating in any formal management education during the study period. The female physicians were compared with 157 male physicians in order to evaluate possible gender and manager-reported differences on individual and organisational well-being. The study also assessed occupational predictors of individual well-being, health and professional development for managers.

Participants in management programs reported a clearer organisational structure and improved professional development and influence. However, there were no significant effects with regard to health, sickness absenteeism, nor career development. Male and female physicians differed in several areas when assessed as a group, but stratifying for management level, most of the gender-related differences disappeared. When managers rated clearer organisational structure, this was associated with higher ratings on individual well-being and professional development.

Management programs for female physicians might have some beneficial effects but these programs need to be better defined and targeted to the most important issues at hand to recruit future managers. Furthermore, these programs must be better integrated with other processes to create efficient and able managers.

This study aims to analyze the feasibility of the Shared Environmental Management , in particular the Environmental Licensing tool and its interaction with the municipalization in the State of Sergipe . We chose to study the Greater Aracaju , for the same occupy most of the state´s population , and that in this region are located 60 % of state industries , the largest industrial center of the state federation , which contributes to the environmental degradation process more intensified , and also contain the state capital, as a reference for the rest of the municipalities. The theoretical approach is based on an analysis of the environmental context through the Federal Constitution and laws and regulations , as well as the concept of environmental management and environmental management in municipalities. The methodological approach was performed literature as well as on-site visit in all municipalities of the region studied. After theoretical and methodological discussion this study comes to the conclusion that we need to develop strategies to improve environmental management in the aforementioned region in view of the precarious reality found and points the public consortium as a model of environmental regional development and improvement of the State Environmental Policy .
Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar a viabilidade da Gestão Ambiental Compartilhada, em especial o instrumento de Licenciamento Ambiental e sua interação com a municipalização no Estado de Sergipe. Optou-se por estudar a Região da Grande Aracaju, por a mesma ocupar a maior parte da população do Estado, bem como nesta região estar o maior pólo industrial da federação estadual, o que contribui para que o processo de degradação do meio ambiente seja mais intensificado, e ainda conter a capital do Estado, como referência para o restante dos municípios. A abordagem teórica está fundamentada na análise da contextualização do meio ambienta na Constituição Federal e na legislação brasileira, bem como do conceito de licenciamento ambiental nos municípios e do compartilhamento da gestão ambiental. Quanto à abordagem metodológica foi realizado levantamento bibliográfico, visita in loco em todos os municípios da região estudada, além de aplicação de questionários a todos os gestores e conselheiros de meio ambiente. Após discussão teórico-metodológica este estudo chega a conclusão que é preciso desenvolver estratégias de melhoria da gestão ambiental na região supracitada em vista da realidade precária encontrada e aponta o consórcio público como um modelo de desenvolvimento regional ambiental e de melhoria da Política Estadual de Meio Ambiente.

Biosafety can be defined as the actions taken to prevent, reduce or eliminate risks inherent in activities that could endanger human health and the environment. Especially on veterinary environments, there is not much information on the subject. Moreover, the habit of neglecting the adoption of containment measures is not uncommon, which can exacerbate the potential hazards present. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the types of risks present in each section of the laboratory, prepare risk maps with graphical representations of intensity and types of risks, disclose these maps to workers as well as to recognize the types of waste generated in the laboratory and the management adopted to the wastes to elaborate and implement a Waste Management Plan. The study was conducted at an official laboratory for veterinary diagnosis from October, 2013 to March, 2014. In this research, a check list was conducted based on the current legislation on good laboratory practices, risk mapping and waste management. The results showed that all risks and degrees of intensity were present in the laboratory with predominance of biological risk, which had severe intensity in most departments. On the other hand, chemical risk was the least frequent, although it showed the highest coefficient of variation. Regarding intensity, the highest and the lowest amount of riskwere observed in the departments of microbiological diagnosis and equine infectious anemia, respectively. As for waste management, failures were observed in all stages, especially segregation, internal transportation, handling and temporary storage, despite the generation of all types of RSS, but radioactive waste. The risk assessment in the laboratory facilities contributed to the preparation of risk maps in each sector, representing the potential hazards identified and containment measures recommended. Furthermore, a waste management plan was developed and implemented, seeking correction of nonconformities observed and, consequently, minimizing workers exposure to hazards present in the laboratory. With this study, it was possible to evidence that the physical structure as well as material and human resources influence directly the success of a biosafety plan. Thus, it is essential the adoption of a continuing education program to maintain the adherence to preventive measures indicated to minimize risks in the laboratory studied.
A biossegurança pode ser definida como um conjunto de ações destinadas a prevenir, diminuir ou eliminar riscos inerentes às atividades que possam comprometer a saúde humana, animal e o meio ambiente. Particularmente, sobre estabelecimentos veterinários, não há muitas informações a respeito do assunto. Aliado a isso, o hábito de negligenciar as medidas de contenção não é situação incomum, o que, por sua vez, pode agravar os potenciais riscos presentes nesses ambientes. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este estudo, identificar os tipos de riscos presentes em cada setor de um laboratório de análises e diagnóstico veterinário, elaborar os mapas de riscos com representações gráfica da intensidade e tipos de riscos, divulgar estes mapas junto aos trabalhadores, diagnosticar os tipos de resíduos gerados no laboratório e o manejo adotado para elaboração e implementação do Plano de Gestão dos Resíduos. O estudo foi realizado no período de outubro de 2013 a março de 2014, por meio de check list baseado na legislação vigente, sobre boas práticas laboratoriais, mapeamento de riscos e gestão dos resíduos. Os resultados demonstraram que todos os riscos e graus de intensidade foram observados no laboratório avaliado, com predominância do risco biológico e intensidade grave na maioria dos setores. O risco químico foi o de menor ocorrência, apesar de apresentar maior coeficiente de variação. A maior e menor intensidade de risco foram observadas nos setores de microbiologia e diagnóstico de anemia infecciosa equina, respectivamente. Quanto ao manejo dos resíduos, foram observadas falhas em todas as etapas, especialmente, na segregação, transporte interno, tratamento e armazenamento temporário, apesar da geração de todos os tipos de resíduos, exceto rejeito radioativo. A identificação dos riscos existentes no estabelecimento contribuiu para a elaboração dos mapas de riscos em cada setor, representando os potenciais riscos identificados e as medidas de contenção preconizadas. Além disso, foi elaborado e implementado o plano de gestão dos resíduos, visando correções das não conformidades observadas e, consequentemente, a minimização da exposição dos trabalhadores aos riscos presentes no laboratório. Com este estudo, pôde-se evidenciar que a estrutura física e os recursos materiais e humanos exercem influência direta para o sucesso de um plano de biossegurança, sendo também imprescindível a adoção de um programa de educação continuada para manutenção da adesão às medidas preventivas indicadas para minimização dos riscos existentes no laboratório em estudo.

The end of the last century saw a meteoric rise in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and its implementation worldwide subsequent to it being legislated by the United States in 1970. The South African Government's Council for the Environment attempted to emulate international developments in EIA and compiled the Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) guidelines of 1989 which delineated the procedure for undertaking EIAs for development projects in South Africa. It was envisaged that these guidelines would ultimately be made law. The period between 1989 and 1997 was a window period when the IEM guidelines were implemented voluntarily. This period therefore constitutes an important era in the history of EIA in South Africa to which constant reference is made and upon which further development in EIA in South Africa has been reliant. The period 1989 to 1997 also coincided with a major increase in the bulk electricity supply to KwaZulu-Natal by Eskom, the national electricity utility. Eskom had actively tracked the evolution of Environmental Management globally and was considered to be at the forefront of Industrial Environmental Management in South Africa and there was therefore an expectation that Eskom would implement the IEM guidelines. In this study twelve EIAs for Eskom powerlines and substations constructed in KZN for the period were analysed and trends in the implementation of the IEM guidelines extrapolated. This study highlights the extent to which the IEM guidelines were implemented. It discusses the problems attendant to its implementation, which were found to be common to the implementation of EIA globally. From this research it became clear that factors external to the IEM guidelines needed to be resolved before the IEM guidelines could be implemented. The administrative requirement was one of the most important and necessary requirements for successful implementation, but this had not been thoroughly anticipated by Eskom nor the guidelines themselves. This required that there was major reform to policy and company procedure, which had to be clearly understood and accepted, before IEM could be effectively implemented. As a consequence, the implementation of the various steps of the IEM guidelines seldom revealed consistent and satisfactory implementation. Even where the IEM guidelines were more closely followed and implemented, previously entrenched technocentrist procedures and ideals persisted and therefore IEM was subverted and implemented with the wrong goal in mind. There was also an expectation that there would be an improvement in EIA practice with time. It was found that there was a greater association between the quality of the EIA conducted and the Eskom Environmental Officer responsible for it, rather than a consistent improvement with time. Thus integration into the project process of environmental procedure is a complex process and it requires firstly that a company is reformed. Reform has subsequently begun to transpire in Eskom. This reform includes education of company employees, which in turn is linked to political will which is necessary to effect the changes required to apply a procedure such as the IEM guidelines. This study reviews the implementation of the IEM guidelines in Eskom during this important development phase. It therefore reflects on a key portion of the history of EIA implementation in this country. The study provides insight into organisational reform and the voluntary commitments required for successful implementation of EIA. Benefit can be drawn from this study for future implementation of EIA even though EIA legislation now exists, as some form of voluntariness, political will and organisational reform is always imperative for ETA's successful and effective implementation.

As a result, autonomous detection, health evaluation, and continual monitoring of the plants are required to ensure environmental sustainability. This thesis presents research on autonomous vegetation management using recent advances in deep learning. Currently, most towns do not have a system in place for detection and continual vegetation monitoring. On the one hand, a lack of public knowledge and political will could be a factor; on the other hand, no efficient and cost-effective technique of monitoring vegetation health has been established. Individual plants health condition data is essential since urban trees often develop as stand-alone objects. Manual annotation of these individual trees is a time-consuming, expensive, and inefficient operation that is normally done in person. As a result, skilled manual annotation cannot cover broad areas, and the data they create is out of date. However, autonomous vegetation management poses a number of challenges due to its multidisciplinary nature. It includes automated detection, health assessment, and monitoring of vegetation and trees by integrating techniques from computer vision, machine learning, and remote sensing. Other challenges include a lack of analysis-ready data and imaging diversity, as well as dealing with their dependence on weather variability. With a core focus on automation of vegetation management using deep learning and transfer learning, this thesis contributes novel techniques for Multi-view vegetation detection, robust calculation of vegetation index, and real- time vegetation health assessment using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and deep learning frameworks. The thesis focuses on four general aspects: a) training CNN with possibly inaccurate labels and noisy image dataset; b) deriving semantic vegetation segmentation from the ordinal information contained in the image; c) retrieving semantic vegetation indexes from street-level imagery; and d) developing a vegetation health assessment and monitoring system. Firstly, it is essential to detect and segment the vegetation, and then calculate the pixel value of the semantic vegetation index. However, because the images in multi- sensory data are not identical, all image datasets must be registered before being fed into the model training. The dataset used for vegetation detection and segmentation was acquired from multi-sensors. The whole dataset was multi-temporal based; therefore, it was registered using deep affine features through a convolutional neural network. Secondly, after preparing the dataset, vegetation was segmented by using Deep CNN, a fully convolutional network, and U-net. Although the vegetation index interprets the health of a particular area’s vegetation when assessing small and large vegetation (trees, shrubs, grass, etc.), the health of large plants, such as trees, is determined by steam. In contrast, small plants’ leaves are evaluated to decide whether they are healthy or unhealthy. Therefore, initially, small plant health was assessed through their leaves by training a deep neural network and integrating that trained model into an internet of things (IoT) device such as AWS DeepLens. Another deep CNN was trained to assess the health of large plants and trees like Eucalyptus. This one could also tell which trees were healthy and which ones were unhealthy, as well as their geo-location. Thus, we may ultimately analyse the vegetation’s health in terms of the vegetation index throughout time on the basis of a semantic-based vegetation index and compute the index in a time-series fashion. This thesis shows that computer vision, deep learning and remote sensing approaches can be used to process street-level imagery in different places and cities, to help manage urban forests in new ways, such as biomass-surveillance and remote vegetation monitoring.

For designers proceeding with work in accordance with nZEB, management strategy means that participants of different disciplines have to accept that surrounding environment parameters are in constant interaction with design. This further points out the necessity to understand the correlations taking place between local and existing environments, when buildings should be fitted out with systems working in interaction between the local and general biosphere parameters. Hence, within the construction business, such development means integrated proceedings in all design phases and construction sphere itself, integration of the artificial systems allowing for the buildings function and parameters characteristic to the local surroundings. This condition also applies to nZEB buildings, except that the parameters are more limited to passive and active solutions used for achieving effective energy choices, while maintaining required user comfort parameters and environmental balance. This chapter is dedicated to management procedures for nZEB investments from a Polish perspective.

This chapter focuses on social media activism and the factors that trigger activism in developing countries. It philosophically reexamines the aftermath of the EndSARS protest via the lens of social media ecology. The epistemological and ontological underpinnings of EndSARS media ecology anchor on social media affordances. It evaluates social movements such as #EndSARS to identify their impact on addressing ills that have retarded development in Africa, particularly the Nigerian state. The chapter combines extant literature with empirical data to discuss socio-politico-environmental realities and issues contributing to social and political disorder in Nigeria. It also proposes solutions on how people can utilize lessons learned from the ‘EndSARS' debacle to advance cause-oriented activities and value reorientation. Finally, the chapter suggests a paradigm shift from a violent mass movement to a peaceful one, using the public relations perspective of crisis management.The chapter focuses on social media activism and the factors that trigger activism in developing countries. With the rapid development of cloud computer concept and technologies, more and more cloud-based business mode and practical applications are emerging in industrial environments, including cloud manufacturing and cloud logistics. Such cloud systems integrate the distributed resources and make best use of them to fulfill dynamic tasks in an optimal way. This paper will demonstrate a simple yet practical application of a cloud-based production logistics (PL) management system (C-PLES) developed under Internet-of-Things (IoT) environment. It collects both real-time process dynamics and resource statues from a ubiquitous PL environment to realize dynamic distributed capability matching. The systematic combination of IoT and cloud system enables the distributed PL terminal resources with uncertainties (e.g. availabilities and locations) to be optimally accessed and assigned to fulfill the real-time PL requirements generated from the dynamic production processes. It also enables the distributed execution data to be centrally managed and seamlessly switched among the dynamically accessed resources.
