La fabrication additive offre des libertés de conception et d’utilisation accrues grâce à l’obtention de pièces couche par couche à partir d’un modèle CAO. La réparation de pièces, le prototypage et l’ajout de fonctionnalités sont à l’heure actuelle les principales applications des procédés additifs. Dans ce contexte de nombreux challenges restent à résoudre pour atteindre la maitrise de ces procédés. L’un des principaux verrous à l’utilisation de la fabrication additive métallique reste la dimension des pièces pouvant être obtenues. La catégorie de technologie Direct Energy Deposition (DED), en particulier le dépôt de poudres par fusion laser, offre une solution à ce verrou en construisant la matière sans limites de dimension ni de forme. Afin d’augmenter la compréhension de ce procédé des travaux à la fois expérimentaux et numérique ont été conduit. Ces travaux s’attachent à la maitrise d’aciers à très hautes performances pour la production de planchers blindés ainsi qu’à la prédiction de la géométrie de cordon par la simulation numérique dans des temps de calcul très court.L’obtention de trois aciers inoxydable martensitique présentant de très hautes performances mécaniques (Re> 1000MPa, Rm> 1200 MPa et A%>12%) a été réalisée grâce à la maitrise des conditions thermiques au cours de la fabrication. Une attention particulière est portée sur la stabilité de la microstructure lors de la construction d’un volume par Laser Metal Deposition – poudre. L’évolution de comportement mécanique de ces matériaux en fonction de traitements thermiques et de la direction de sollicitation est également discuté.Une nouvelle stratégie numérique permettant l’obtention de la forme de la surface libre du bain fondu au moment de la solidification a été développée. Cette stratégie numérique permet de modéliser la géométrie des cordons à partir des paramètres procédés sans réaliser de calcul thermo-fluide. Le modèle numérique est également capable de reproduire l’affaissement de l’épaisseur de couche au cours de la construction d’un mur dans des temps de calcul très courtsAdditive manufacturing allows a greater freedom of geometry thanks to the layer-by-layer construction of the parts from a CAD model. Reparation, prototyping and functionalisation are the main applications of the additive processes. Therefore, many challenges are still to overcome in order to master those processes. One of the main challenges is the dimensions of the parts built by metallic additive manufacturing.The Direct Energy Deposition technologies, specifically powder fed Laser Metal Deposition, are a solution to build parts without neither dimension nor geometric limitations. Experimental and numerical work has been conducted in the objective of improving the understanding of this process. This work focus on mastering high mechanical performances as well as predict bead geometry thanks to the numerical simulation.Three martensitic stainless steel showing high mechanical performances (YS> 1000MPa, UTS> 1200 MPa et E%>12%) are obtained. A specific attention has been paid to the microstructure and its stability during the build-up the volumes. The effect of the heat treatments on the mechanical properties was investigated to improve the performances.A new numerical strategy simulating the freeform of the melt pool surface has been developped. The strategy allow the modelisation of the bead’s geometry from process parameters without any thermo-fluid calculation. The model is able to reproduce the bead’s thickness evolution during a wall build-up in short computation time

Este plan de Marketing ha sido desarrollado con la finalidad de aprovechar la coyuntura de la industria minera (baja en el precio del cobre1) e introducir, en Chile, un respirador de alta calidad adecuado a esa coyuntura, con el objetivo de lograr incrementar la participación en el segmento de respiradores reutilizables filtrantes de MSA. MSA es el líder mundial en el desarrollo, fabricación y suministro de productos de seguridad que protegen a las personas y las infraestructuras de las instalaciones. Muchos productos de MSA integran una combinación de electrónica, sistemas mecánicos y materiales avanzados para proteger a los usuarios contra las situaciones peligrosas o potencialmente mortales. Debido a la baja del precio del cobre2, reducción de personal en la industria minera3 y a la búsqueda de la reducción de costos de las compañías4, se ha configurado un escenario atractivo para la introducción de un respirador adecuado que le permitirá a MSA quitar participación de mercado a las demás marcas. Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium that consists of two species; S. enterica and S. bongori. The species S. enterica can be further divided into 6 subspecies and subspecies I is predominantly associated with disease in warm blooded animals and contains over 2,500 antigenically distinct serovars. Each serovar is >90% identical at the DNA level but can infect a different range of hosts and cause different diseases. Poultry are an important reservoir of entry of Salmonella into the human food chain owing to the contamination of their eggs and meat. The molecular mechanisms underlying colonisation of food producing animals with Salmonella are unknown. Fimbrial genes encode proteinaceous surface exposed appendages which have been shown to mediate adhesion of bacterial cells but the precise role for fimbriae in the carriage and virulence of Salmonella is poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to annotate and characterise the fimbrial genes of the poultry-associated S. enterica serovars Enteritidis and Gallinarum and relate this role to host-specificity. The availability of the genome sequences of several strains of S. enterica allowed a comparison of the sequence, location and repertoire of fimbrial genes and although no unique fimbrial genes were identified all serovars possessed a unique repertoire. The host-specific serovars contain a higher number of pseudogenes within fimbrial operons than the ubiquitous serovars and the rate of attrition of fimbrial genes was 3-4 fold higher than the genomic mean. Such gene decay may partially explain the narrowing of host-range of the host-restricted and host-specific serovars. Polymorphisms that may alter transcription were identified along with targets that may be associated with phase variation of the fimbrial genes. Lambda red-mediated homologous recombination was used to construct a panel of S. Enteritidis P125109 and S. Gallinarum 287/91 strains lacking major fimbrial subunit genes which were examined in vitro and in vivo. Several fimbrial subunits played a role in the adherence to and invasion of different cell lines in different growth conditions and the role appeared to be serovar-specific. A mutation in the steA gene impaired interactions with different cell lines in vitro but this phenotype was found to be due to a polar effect on genes downstream of steA. The majority of fimbrial subunits played no significant role in the colonisation of the alimentary tract in an established chicken model. Mutation of the stcA gene resulted in the greatest degree of attenuation in vivo of all of the fimbrial mutants examined. This phenotype was trans-complemented and was not the result of a polar or second-site defect thereby fulfilling molecular Koch’s postulates. The stcA genes therefore play a significant role in the colonisation of the chicken caeca.

This thesis begins from an analysis of Derrida's specific readings of Plato and Platonism, identifying there a modernist bias, which interprets these metaphysical systems as if they were coextensive with Cartesian rationalism. Against Derrida, I argue for a repositioning of Plato and Platonism in the context of an ancient-modern quarrel. In replacing Descartes's "clarity and distinctness" with a pre-modern emphasis on "faith" (pistis), I am seeking to challenge Derrida's diagnosis of a perplexity or impasse (aporia) which cannot be overcome by philosophy. With specific reference to the Meno and the Phaedrus, one can locate a three-tiered Platonic dialectic beginning with an assertion of knowledge, followed by a necessary deconstruction of this knowledge with, thirdly, a tentative reconstruction of philosophy based on faith rather than knowing. In later chapters, I examine this dialectic as it is developed in the Neo- and Christian- Platonist traditions, particularly through the work of Plotinus, Boethius and Augustine. On my interpretation, deconstruction remains at the second level of the Platonic dialectic, that of impasse and perplexity (one of Derrida's most recent texts is in fact entitled Aporias). Again with reference to an ancient-modern quarrel, it is my contention that Derrida's unstinting stress on the "aporetic" is due to an overemphasis of the Cartesian paradigm. Derrida identifies the exhaustion of what Deeley calls "the classical modern paradigm" with the exhaustion of philosophy per se. But this identification of philosophy with Cartesianism can be seriously challenged through a renewed foregrounding of the premodern philosophical resources which Descartes (and now Derrida) have sought to obscure.

The central thesis around which several arguments develop and revolve in this work is that time has come for members of the legal profession in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland - countries with shared historical, cultural, legal and socioeconomic values - to join other forces in assessing both their structures and functions with a view to readjusting them to suit the new demands of society, namely that even under those new conditions, legal services must not only be available but must be competently delivered to the public. To be responsive to the needs of society, lawyers must be trained in such a way that they are able to appreciate the importance of social goals and contribute to the full satisfaction of those goals with competence and efficiency. In advancing the above thesis three methods are employed. Firstly, is to establish the present and future needs of the society and how these needs can be met in terms of the necessary requirements of law, lawyers and the entire legal process to satisfy those needs. Secondly, to establish the extent to which those needs have and are being met and to explain the reasons for the limitation in their success. Thirdly, to advance the theory that legal education has a task in transforming society by equipping students with highly developed skills needed to bring about people-centred development. The object of the thesis is, therefore, to develop and explore through empirical research new avenues of development-oriented legal education by analysing the sources and magnitude of the problem of legal education; by examining the social context in which law, lawyers and the entire legal process operate; by exploring all factors, legal and non-legal, which limit law, lawyers and legal institutions, including legal education in their role to meet the needs of society and by developing a skills-oriented legal education which would produce lawyers much needed for development within the context of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. To that end the work is divided into ten chapters discussing, amongst others, the objectives and methodology employed in the research; the concept of development and the limitations of lawyers in that development process as evidenced by the socio-political economy of the BOLESWA countries; the legal needs and the utilisation of lawyers to meet those needs in Swaziland; and the extent to which the past and present law programmes adequately prepare lawyers to satisfy social needs. It ends by providing a few suggestions. However, central to the entire discussion is the development of a fresh model in legal education that emphasises skills development as the most appropriate for development-oriented lawyers needed today in the BOLESWA countries. In one's research in legal education, one is struck by lack of sufficient work in this area. Yet legal education is at a crossroad of its development in the BOLESWA countries where crisis of law and development occupy central themes in scholarly debates currently taking place. If significant changes are to be effected, the arguments on skills development presented in this thesis remain critically important for future debates, policy formation and implementation on the subject in the BOLESWA countries and Southern Africa generally.

Chaotic systems have properties such as ergodicity, sensitivity to initial conditions/parameter mismatches, mixing property, deterministic dynamics, structure complexity, to mention a few, that map nicely with cryptographic requirements such as confusion, diffusion, deterministic pseudorandomness, algorithm complexity. Furthermore, the possibility of chaotic synchronization, where the master system (transmitter) is driving the slave system (receiver) by its output signal, made it probable for the possible utilization of chaotic systems to implement security in the communication systems. Many methods like chaotic masking, chaotic modulation, inclusion, chaotic shift keying (CSK) had been proposed however, many attack methods later showed them to be insecure. Different modifications of these methods also exist in the literature to improve the security, but almost all suffer from the same drawback. Therefore, the implementation of chaotic systems in security still remains a challenge. In this work, different possibilities on how it might be possible to improve the security of the existing methods are explored. The main problem with the existing methods is that the message imprint could be found in the dynamics of the transmitted signal, therefore by some signal processing or pattern classification techniques, etc, allow the exposition of the hidden message. Therefore, the challenge is to remove any pattern or change in dynamics that the message might bring in the transmitted signal.

An important contextual feature of their role and a concept that has been widely embraced by the National Health Service, is that of decentralized decision making. Unlike clinical decision making which has been extensively studied, there is little in the healthcare literature regarding leadership and management decision making or the concept of decentralised decision making. In order to maximise the effectiveness of the Modern Matron role, it is important that we gain a thorough understanding of how they make leadership and management decisions, the reality of the term decentralized decision making for them and an insight into their abilities and needs in regards to this essential skill.

In this thesis we develop results concerning strongly group-graded lk-algebras. Chapter 1 is mainly expository: we set up a careful treatment of well-known facts and definitions regarding graded algebras so that later results run smoothly. A secondary reason for including the treatment is to give the reader a solid grounding in the basics: much use will be made of these initial observations throughout the thesis. In Chapter 2 we establish generalisations of known work for group algebras. Here the paper Complexity and Varieties for infinite groups, I by D. J. Benson is key, with results of J. Cornick and P. H. Kropholler discussed and generalised as needed. The main theorems of this chapter characterise - albeit under specific conditions - modules of finite projective dimension over strongly group-graded lk-algebras for G an LH~-group. Chapter 3 sees us take a different tack with complete cohomology where we define the zeroeth cohomology group to be the set of morphisms in certain module categories. We show that these categories can be realised as quotients of the derived category of suitable subcategories. This work also generalises results due to Benson. We introduce some vanishing theorems for modules of type FP 00 over skew polynomial rings, with suitable finiteness conditions on the base ring in Chapter 4. Iterated skew polynomial rings are also investigated, as are iterated skew Laurent polynomial rings.

It is well established that matching unfamiliar faces is highly error prone, even under seemingly optimal conditions. This thesis shows large individual differences in unfamiliar face matching. Across several visual cognition tasks, the best predictor for this variability was recognition of inverted faces, regardless of whether they were familiar or unfamiliar. In stark contrast, there was no relationship between upright familiar and unfamiliar face processing. Moreover, the ability to match faces was unrelated to the ability to reject these faces, unless they were upright familiars. Therefore, the processes involved in upright unfamiliar face processing appeared to be qualitatively similar to those underlying the recognition of inverted familiar and unfamiliar faces, but very different to those responsible for upright familiar face processing. Finally, the presence of a second face severely impaired matching a target person, particularly when they were presented close together. The implications of these findings for the forensic field are discussed.

This thesis explores the relationship between occupations and the ontology of the social. I begin by drawing a distinction between the messianic and the modern as concentrated in the affective transformation of vocation into occupation. I then, in the Introduction, sketch an ontic-ontological contrast proper to the modern, between modernity, as the collective problematization of social diversity, and the contemporary, as the plural ground of need which provides a source for these problematizations. I argue that this distinction will enable me to shed new light on the occupational as a distinctly modern event. In Part I, I begin by providing a reading of Durkheim in which I argue that the occupational is to be understood ontologically, but no longer by means of the theorization of society and social types. This kind of theorization, exemplified in Durkheim's concept of solidarity, contains a fundamental ambiguity between this concept's ontological senses of original diversity and of unity in diversity. Durkheim's thought is thus first intelligible in terms of an implicit evolutionary sense of coherence or `need of wholeness.' However, the explicit evolutionary framework and its central typological difference between the mechanical and organic is an attempt to resolve the ambiguity that must fail because it addresses primarily a distinction of obligation rather than a distinction of need. Obligation is shown to be a concept of facticity which overcodes and obscures the distinction of need. I then go on to argue that sociality can be better accounted for in terms of a continuity of social becoming which is revealed in a perspective of modernity purged of the modernist tendency to metaphorize this continuity in terms such as `solidity' (Durkheim) and `flow' (Tarde). This perspective is the irreducibly plural perspective of the contemporary, which, I conclude Part I by suggesting, lies in a sense of merging with a social outside. In Part II, I turn to investigate the outside by discussing the social thought of Bergson and Deleuze. Bergson's thought is presented as an alternative to the deductivesociologistic approaches of Durkheim and Tarde, because it attempts to critically affirm the smooth duration of social continuity. However, I argue that the notion of `open society' that Bergson presents is still too tied to a model of rare spirituality and hence to the messianic perspective. I then proceed to a social-theoretical analysis of Deleuze's oeuvre, in order to show how he uses elements of a thought of continuity from Tarde (microsociology) and from Bergson (multiplicity), but that he is able to transcend the family-model-centeredness of Tarde and the rare-spiritual-modelcenteredness of Bergson, by theorizing non-modelled figures of transformative affective multiplicity inscribed within the actual, ie. `full particularities'. In my concluding chapter, I show how the intellectual trajectory which takes us from Durkheim to Deleuze can be analysed as a movement from a doctrine or relatively passive notion of social externality towards a more active social image of the outside. In particular, I am concerned to show how this image of the outside can be recontextualized in terms of a movement of occupation that can be thought of as always combining a sense of the contemporary with a sense of modernity.

The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a new broad approach to computing - Empirical Modelling (EM) - and to propose a way of applying this approach for system development so as to avoid the limitations of conventional approaches and integrate system development with business process reengineering (BPR). Based on the concepts of agency, observable and dependency, EM is an experiencebased approach to modelling with computers in which the modeller interacts with an artefact through continuous observations and experiments. It is a natural way of working for business process modelling because the modeller is involved in, and takes account of, the real world context. It is also adaptable to a rapidly changing environment as the computer-based models serve as creative artefacts with which the modeller can interact in a situated and open-ended manner. This thesis motivates and illustrates the EM approach to new concepts of participative BPR and participative process modelling. That is, different groups of people, with different perceptions, competencies and requirements, can be involved during the process of system development and BPR, rather than just being involved at an early stage. This concept aims to address the well-known high failure rate of BPR. A framework SPORE (situated process of requirements engineering), which has been proposed to guide the process of cultivating requirements in a situated manner, is extended to participative BPR (i.e. to support many users in a distributed environment). Two levels of modelling are proposed for the integration of contextual understanding and system development. A comparison between EM and object-orientation is also provided to give insight into how EM differs from current methodologies and to point out the potential of EM in system development and BPR. The ISMs (interactive situation models), built using the principles and tools of EM, are used to form artefacts during the modelling process. A warehouse and logistics management system is taken as an illustrative case study for applying this framework.

The long-neglected Henry VI plays have been 'rediscovered' by a number of post-war productions which have found new ways of bringing Shakespeare's civil war plays to modern audiences. The Wars of the Roses, directed by Peter Hall and adapted by Hall and John Barton, established the theatrical vitality of the plays and defined them for a generation as 'national' dramas. I argue that many of the most important and mythologised aspects of that production were contingent upon the difficult situation of the RSC in the early 1960s and that, in fact, the 'tradition' of playing the Henry VI plays as national dramas is an invented one, based upon the Tillyardian interpretation of them as 'matter of England' plays. Nevertheless, The Wars of the Roses has cast a massive shadow over subsequent productions of the Henry VI plays. Most notably, two productions in the late 1980s - the RSC's The Plantagenets and the ESC's The Wars of the Roses - were virtual revivals of the 1963 productions whilst even those that, at the time, seemed to be reacting against Hall and Barton - the RSC's trilogy of 1977 and the BBC's tetralogy of 1981/3 - in fact bore their influence in that they staged the plays as 'matter of England' productions. 'England' took on a different meaning however after the election of the Conservative Government in 1979. Mrs. Thatcher introduced market ideologies into the funding of theatres and this forced rapid, radical and often unwelcome changes to the culture of the large theatres: England became a divided and contested site and rubbed against the resolution that Hall and Barton had sought in 1963. In the third chapter, I will examine in detail three 1980s productions which were shaped by this situation, but also responded to, engaged with, and attempted to subvert the Thatcherite appropriation of national identity. Finally, I argue that all of these performances exhibit a deep anxiety about social changes and about the role of Shakespearean theatre within these changes.

An industrial traffic management and control system based on Automated Guided Vehicles faces several combined problems. Decisions must be made concerning which vehicles will respond, or are allocated to each of the transport orders. Once a vehicle is allocated a transport order, a route has to be selected that allows it to reach its target location. In order for the vehicle to move efficiently along the selected route it must be provided with the means to recognise and adapt to the changing characteristics of the path it must follow. When several vehicles are involved these decisions are interrelated and must take into account the coordination of the movements of the vehicles in order to avoid collisions and maximise the performance of the transport system. This research concentrates on the problem of routing the vehicles that have already been assigned destinations associated with transport orders. In nearly all existing AGV systems this problem is simplified by considering there to be a fixed route between source and destination workstations. However if the system is to be used more efficiently, and particularly if it must support the requirements of modern manufacturing strategies, such as Justin- Time and Flexible Manufacturing Systems, of moving very small batches more frequently, then there is a need for a system capable of dealing with the increased complexity of the routing problem. The consideration of alternative paths between any two workstations together with the possibility of other vehicles blocking routes while waiting at a particular location, increases enormously the number of alternatives that must be considered in order to identify the routes for each vehicle leading to an optimum solution. Current methods used to solve this type of problem do not provide satisfactory solutions for all cases, which leaves scope for improvement. The approach proposed in this work takes advantage of the use of Backpropagation Artificial Neural Networks to develop a solution for the routing problem. A novel aspect of the approach implemented is the use of a solution derived for routing a single vehicle in a physical layout when some pieces of track are set as unavailable, as the basis for the solution when several vehicles are involved. Another original aspect is the method developed to deal with the problem of selecting a route between two locations based on an analysis of the conditions of the traffic system, when each movement decision has to be made. This lead to the implementation of a step-by-step search of the available routes for each vehicle. Two distinct phases can be identified in the approach proposed. First the design of a solution based on an ANN to solve the single vehicle case, and subsequently the development and testing of a solution for a multi-vehicle case. To test and implement these phases a specific layout was selected, and an algorithm was implemented to generate the data required for the design of the ANN solution. During the development of alternative solutions it was found that the addition of simple rules provided a useful means to overcome some of the limitations of the ANN solution, and a "hybrid" solution was originated. Numerous computer simulations were performed to test the solutions developed against alternatives based on the best published heuristic rules. The results showed that while it was not possible to generate a globally optimal solution, near optimal solutions could be obtained and the best hybrid solution was marginally better than the best of the currently available heuristic rules.

This thesis is an examination of human rights and constitutional development in Tanzania Mainland. The colonial and post-colonial history is used to analyse the development of human rights struggles, as well as institutions such as the Bill of Rights in the recent development of multi-party democracy. The thesis intends to establish that in spite of global factors such as pressure for democratisation from international institutions, the achievement of the Bill of Rights in Tanzania Mainland is part of a wider rights struggle of the people of Tanzania. The effective legal and political implementation of specific rights such as the right to vote, freedom of association and assembly reflect the state of that struggle. The thesis further seeks to establish that while the government sponsored the enactment of the Bill of Rights in 1984 and the re-introduction of multi-partism in 1992, it has always preferred to exercise extreme control over the enjoyment of political rights. This has often involved curtailing the establishment and free operation of institutions of popular democracy. The thesis goes on to suggest that unless a democratic culture and civil society are restored in the country, the success of the rights struggles of the people will be far-fetched. Together with the above it is argued that the struggle for rights could be enhanced by working from what is provided as legal rights, all interested parties pushing for the expansion of the human rights field. This can only be attained if the majority of Tanzanians are made aware of the existence of such rights through legal literacy programs.

This thesis consists of three studies. The topics discussed are in the area of international trade and economic growth with a reference to the policy issues in East Asia. The study in Chapter 2 presents a model of North-South trade which can explain the observed cross-country variations in factor prices. Intuition and evidence suggest that knowledge is largely non-excludable and hence all countries should have access to broadly similar technology. However, this public-good assumption for technology leads to implausible predictions of factor prices in standard models. The model in this study does not assume any differences in technology but its predictions are consistent with observations. In Chapter 3, the implications of the two vintage models for growth accounting are examined. Growth accounting studies have shown that total factor productivity growth in East Asian economies has been slower than expected. Analysis of the vintages models suggests that this puzzling finding could be due to mismeasurements of capital arising from the particular characteristic of East Asian growth experience. In Chapter 4, it is shown that when asymmetric economies adopt an open regionalism policy, some of them may gain at the expense of others. This result is very different from the commonly held view in the literature. In certain situations, some economies in the bloc achieves a higher welfare level than under global free trade. A policy of open regionalism could therefore turn out to be an obstacle to the process of multilateral trade liberalization.

The thesis is a comparative examination of selected security threats and vulnerabilities which confronted Kazakstan and Uzbekistan between 1991-96. Through this study, the broader economic, political and social processes that accompanied their transition from Soviet republican status to independent statehood are exemplified. The research is concerned with three case-studies which are prime regional concerns and will be central to the future development of the republics. These are: - Government-minority relations; in Kazakstan between Almaty and the Russian community, and in Uzbekistan between Tashkent and the Tajik minority. This case-study explores issues of group political consciousness and mobilisation, political access and participation, and nation- and state-building; - Competition and conflict over the region's riverine waters. The relationship between environmental resources, economic development and social stability are central to this study. The research suggests that elite and popular attitudes towards the exploitation and/or management of environmental resources, resource ownership and economic and environmental reform are of as equal significance to this debate as are actual environmental degradation and absolute resource scarcity; and - Islam's ideological and physical challenge to the republics' political and security stability. Central to this debate are the issues of the state's ideological foundation, regime legitimacy, the blurred nexus between regime and state security, and the economic and social context in which political ideas compete. The case-studies also offer a challenge to and critique of traditional Realist International Relations (M) assumptions on the concepts of state and security, because of their characteristics; intra- and/or trans-state in location, frequently indirect and non-specific in their consequences, and rooted as equally in the subjective and perceptual as they are in the physical realm. Consequently, a comprehensive security approach, based upon Pluralist IR. assumptions, has been applied. This perspective emphasises the multiple sources of insecurity that the two republics are confronted by, and the need for a broad range of policies to address such problems, which are particularly acute during transitional periods.

For the duration of the past three decades a growing number of research has proved that business environments are evolving at an accelerated rate that require new organisational forms. strategies and processes. In other words, in a hyper-competitive environment with increasing globalisation, it is hard for a single company to possess all resources needed to develop and sustain current competitive advantages whilst trying simultaneously to build a new one. Clearly, in order to gain and sustain competitive advantage in such turbulent environment, organisations need to combine or co-operate with one another organisations. This could explain the popularity of merger/acquisition strategies in the last two decades. However, the results of these strategies were disappointed because merger/acquisition strategies did not achieve the financial objective of the combinations. Number of reasons attributed to such failure, such as the price of the deal is too high, the time of the deal is inappropriate etc. However, by delving deeper into both human and organisational sides of the deal would enable us to realise the essence of merger/acquisition failures or successes: The human resource and cultural factors in addition to the way such issues are managed. Yet, these essential factors often neglected during merger process as soft issues. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of human resource and cultural factors in the success or failure of merger/acquisition strategies and how these factor would enable companies to gain and sustain their competitive advantage. The influence of external factors on mergers/acquisitions also investigated. To achieve these aims, this study designed to involve two groups (merging and non-merging companies) and two different sample units for each group (top and middle management). The results signify that human resource and culture factors are critical for the success of mergers/acquisitions. In other words, this study gave evidence that understanding, analysing and managing the redundancies, cultures clash, uncertainty, stress and low morale that often associate with such strategies through effective communication, coping programmes and procedural justice would increase the possibility of success, yet neglecting such essential factors would prove the failure of these strategies. Internal factors were proved in this study to be unique success factors in the context of mergers/acquisition, but external factors were proved to be important for both merging and non-merging companies.

This investigation was designed to research the Islamic education curriculum (I. E. C.) for secondary schools in Kuwait. The investigation covered the major elements of the Islamic education curriculum, namely the aims, the textbooks, teaching methods, aids and activities and the styles of assessment. The methods which were used to collect the data for this research were the questionnaire and the interview. The research population included: teachers of the I. E. C., supervisors, students of the 10th grade secondary schools. The findings indicated that in theory the I. E. C.’s aims seem to be comprehensive, covering all the aspects of student development. But, unfortunately, there were no real applications for all those aims in the practical teaching of the I. E. C., whether one examined the textbook, teaching methods, or styles of assessment. The topics of the textbook generally focused on the theoretical aspects of the I. E. C. and some of those topics were repetitive. Teaching methods were traditional and focused on telling by the teacher, with a lack of modern teaching methods to encourage the student to take an active role in the learning process. In addition, there was a clear lack of modern educational aids like audio visual equipment. Finally, the style of assessment was traditional aimed at measuring the students' knowledge, without paying attention to measuring other aspects of student achievement. This thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapter One, outlines the general approach for studying problems related to the Islamic education curriculum in Kuwaiti secondary schools. There are clear weaknesses in the Islamic education curriculum in secondary schools. One of the most important is the absence of any explanation of the way in which the I. E. C. deals with the negative changes that are taken place in Kuwaiti society after the Iraqi aggression in 1990 and this is the main focus of the chapter. In Chapter Two, the educational system in Kuwait is discussed in detail from Al-katatib to the modern schools. The aims of each stage of the Kuwaiti educational system are also discussed. Chapter Three examines the background of the Islamic education in general and its sources, examining in particular what is the general aim of Islamic education and how this relates to the Kuwaiti context. Chapter Four, identifies previous studies of the curriculum in general. It examines definitions of the curriculum in general, the aims and their classification, the content of the textbook, the types of teaching methods and their importance in the learning teaching process and finally the style of assessments and their role in the learning process. This material is then related to the learning process in Kuwait and particularly its connections to the I. E. C. In the second section of this chapter previous studies which evaluated the Islamic education curriculum in Kuwaiti schools (especially the I. E. C.’s role in confronting the negative changes taken place in the Kuwait society) are examined. Chapter Five critically discusses the methodology, which was used in this research. Chapter Six examines the statistical result of the research. Chapter Seven then discusses and analyses the research findings. Chapter Eight ends the thesis with make a series of recommendations and conclusions based on the research findings.

This thesis describes and analyses the views of young Muslim women from Pakistani backgrounds who live in the same neighbourhood in Sheffield. The thesis documents their perspectives about `home'. More specifically, it considers their perceptions of identity and `belonging', in light of their residence in Sheffield and family connections to Pakistan. This thesis is prompted by the inadequacy of existing explanations. `Belonging' has been under theorised, viewed as cultural affiliation to British culture or Asian culture. This is inadequate. Debate focuses on `difference'. Asian cultures are reified, depicted as patriarchal and constraining. More recent accounts have tried to move debate forward via a reformulation of identity; belonging is still viewed as one-dimensional. I aim to establish a broader based account of the young women's perspectives, focussing on their own views. Central to the analytical framework is a focus on views about place. Description and analysis explores views about three key places in their views: the neighbourhood, Sheffield and Pakistan. This facilitates a move beyond the confines of existing research where `belonging' is viewed as an affiliation to the nation. Description and analysis of the young women's views reveals the centrality of `racism' to their views about Sheffield. The young women were apprehensive about experiencing racial harassment or violence. This acted as a backdrop to their views about place. Racism did not prevent `belonging'. Meanings that addressed this apprehension were central to their perspectives about `home' in Sheffield. Identity and belonging are understood as multifaceted. The young women had a sense of affinity with Pakistan, coupled with a sense of belonging in Sheffield. Rather than being trapped `between two cultures' they simultaneously looked towards Sheffield and Pakistan; they identified as `Pakistanis in Sheffield'. Views about place played a mediatory role in perceptions of identity and belonging, reflecting and sustaining perspectives.

Most previous studies of Iranian music focus on melodic systems (Farhat, Zonis, etc.) or on instrumentation and the transcription of folk songs (Massoudieh, Darvishi, etc. ). This thesis examines the so-far neglected rhythmic structure of Iranian classical music. This research has adopted a multidisciplinary perspective, employing approaches from the psychology of music, Western and Iranian music theory, historical musicology and the ethnomusicological approach of participant-observation. In order to investigate the rhythmic aspect of Iranian music and attempt to relate it to other aspects of this music, this thesis examines different issues related to the rhythmic structure of Iranian music, including the rhythmic structure of the Persian poetry, the old rhythmic cycles and the rhythmic characteristics of both improvisation and composed music. Analysis of more than fifty improvisations and composed music in this thesis shows that the rhythmic organisation of güsheh-ha and musical genres with any rhythmic profile (such as free metre, stretchable metre or fixed metre) may be influenced by the shape of Persian poetic metres. A wide exploration of music-related manuscripts from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries provides an opportunity to compare more than thirty different rhythmic cycles recorded there. Although this system of rhythmic cycles is no longer explicitly used in Iranian music, examining several examples of contemporaneous improvisation and composed music reveals that a taste of the old rhythmic cycles is still felt in this music. An adaptation of the old rhythmic cycles examined in this thesis to current techniques of tombak performance is another outcome of this thesis. Moreover, presenting a case study of contemporary performance of Iranian classical music at the end of this thesis provides an opportunity to exhibit the role in a real performance of most of the theories raised in this thesis.

This study attempts to analyze four of the key philosophical concepts which underlie Western and Islamic education in order to help achieve an understanding between East and West based on immutable truths, whose attainment is made possible by the spiritual experience that is accessible to qualified men, whether of East or West. With respect to the motive from which we undertook this study, six sections make up the thesis. Section one discusses logical positivism and linguistic analysis. In this section, special emphasis is put on criticisms of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations and the impact of linguistic analysis on Christian theology, and Islamic metaphysics, based on which sacred knowledge (scientia sacra) is the highest form of knowledge and the ultimate goal of Islamic education. Section two discusses Islamic philosophy and Western existentialism and alienation respectively. Special emphasis is placed on Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre representing Western existentialism, and Sabziwari and his predecessors representing Islamic existentialism. Section three is devoted to the major theories of the Western philosophy of mind dealing with the question of whether we have minds distinct from our bodies. Thus, dualism and physicalism are critically discussed. In contrast, as regards the Islamic philosophy of mind, special emphasis is put on the autonomy of the spirit and the indivisibility of the acts of the spirit. Section three also discusses certain major eschatological issues. Special emphasis is laid on the ineluctable final moment of all things and the role of resurrection in the life of man and his philosophical insight. Section four deals with Western modernism, which has its roots in the Renaissance and 18th century European thought, and is the final product of gradually accumulated Western ontological assumptions. Its final ontological God from the ontological scene, rejection of idealistic, static or cyclic religious thought, and finally, belief in a linear time which, contrary to the religious conception of time, does not lead to a form of return to an ideal, perfect existence. Special emphasis is laid on modernity and secularization. That is, modernity came to be seen as a rupture, a break from that which preceded it (Geilner 1992,1998). The world views of religion and modernity would therefore appear to be fundamentally opposed. Section five discusses postmodernism, which has invited an obscurity and pretentiousness almost unmatched in the long, often obscure, and pretentious history of philosophy. It is a continuation of a tradition that is unmistakably Western. It brings out themes that have been active if sometimes latent throughout that tradition - skepticism; pluralism; an emphasis on style, irony, and indirect discourse; a rejection of dogmatism; a suspicion of such abstractions as 'Truth' and 'Being'; a respect for, even a fascination with, other traditions and cultures. Section six deals with Islamic education with respect to the present-day challenges. Emphasis is laid on the hierarchy and unity of knowledge as one of the salient features of Islamic education. Finally, an overall assessment will be made, highlighting the major problems facing us and making some suggestions to solve them.

The explosive growth of Internet-based architectures is allowing an efficient access to information resources over geographically dispersed areas. This fact is exerting a major influence on current manufacturing practices. Business activities involving customers, partners, employees and suppliers are being rapidly and efficiently integrated through networked information management environments. Therefore, efforts are required to take advantage of distributed infrastructures that can satisfy information integration and collaborative work strategies in corporate environments. In this research, Internet-based distributed solutions focused on the manufacturing industry are proposed. Three different systems have been developed for the tooling sector, specifically for the company Seco Tools UK Ltd (industrial collaborator). They are summarised as follows. SELTOOL is a Web-based open tool selection system involving the analysis of technical criteria to establish appropriate selection of inserts, toolholders and cutting data for turning, threading and grooving operations. It has been oriented to world-wide Seco customers. SELTOOL provides an interactive and crossed-way of searching for tooling parameters, rather than conventional representation schemes provided by catalogues. Mechanisms were developed to filter, convert and migrate data from different formats to the database (SQL-based) used by SELTOOL.TTS (Tool Trials System) is a Web-based system developed by the author and two other researchers to support Seco sales engineers and technical staff, who would perform tooling trials in geographically dispersed machining centres and benefit from sharing data and results generated by these tests. Through TTS tooling engineers (authorised users) can submit and retrieve highly specific technical tooling data for both milling and turning operations. Moreover, it is possible for tooling engineers to avoid the execution of new tool trials knowing the results of trials carried out in physically distant places, when another engineer had previously executed these trials. The system incorporates encrypted security features suitable for restricted use on the World Wide Web. An urgent need exists for tools to make sense of raw data, extracting useful knowledge from increasingly large collections of data now being constructed and made available from networked information environments. This explosive growth in the availability of information is overwhelming the capabilities of traditional information management systems, to provide efficient ways of detecting anomalies and significant patterns in large sets of data. Inexorably, the tooling industry is generating valuable experimental data. It is a potential and unexplored sector regarding the application of knowledge capturing systems. Hence, to address this issue, a knowledge discovery system called DISKOVER was developed. DISKOVER is an integrated Java-application consisting of five data mining modules, able to be operated through the Internet. Kluster and Q-Fast are two of these modules, entirely developed by the author. Fuzzy-K has been developed by the author in collaboration with another research student in the group at Durham. The final two modules (R-Set and MQG) have been developed by another member of the Durham group. To develop Kluster, a complete clustering methodology was proposed. Kluster is a clustering application able to combine the analysis of quantitative as well as categorical data (conceptual clustering) to establish data classification processes. This module incorporates two original contributions. Specifically, consistent indicators to measure the quality of the final classification and application of optimisation methods to the final groups obtained. Kluster provides the possibility, to users, of introducing case-studies to generate cutting parameters for particular Input requirements. Fuzzy-K is an application having the advantages of hierarchical clustering, while applying fuzzy membership functions to support the generation of similarity measures. The implementation of fuzzy membership functions helped to optimise the grouping of categorical data containing missing or imprecise values. As the tooling database is accessed through the Internet, which is a relatively slow access platform, it was decided to rely on faster Information retrieval mechanisms. Q-fast is an SQL-based exploratory data analysis (EDA) application, Implemented for this purpose.

The Festal Letters of Saint Athanasius were composed in response to a decision by the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The Council of Bishops assembled primarily to confront the teachings of Arianism, which had questioned the Nature and Person of Jesus Christ. But another problem that the Council of Nicaea faced related to the celebration of Easter. For some time the Church had become divided about the proper observance not only of Easter itself, but also the Lenten Season and the post-Easter period leading to Pentecost. The Council deputed to the Bishopric of Alexandria the task of computing the correct dates for Easter to ensure unity of theological belief and doxological expression. While the practice of composing pastoral letters had already been established in Alexandria, Athanasius continued to notify the Church concerning Easter by sending Festal Letters throughout his entire period in office. In the first instance, we shall examine the historical background to these Pastoral Epistles. The theme of resurrection is then investigated in relation to three of Athanasius' main works - Contra Gentes, De Incarnatione and Contra Arianos (I - III). The third chapter particularises the concept of resurrection and the manner in which Athanasius perceives it within the Festal Letters themselves. This is complemented by an analysis of the doxological significance of resurrection within worship and especially Eucharistic practice. Chapter Five expresses the main theological realities that formed the foundation of Athanasius' soteriological beliefs. Central to these are the nature of the homoousion and the saving vicarious humanity of Jesus Christ. The sixth chapter concludes appropriately with a study of immortality in relation to body and soul.

In the peripheral nervous system the myelin sheath is produced by the spiral wrappings of the Schwann cell (SC) membrane around the axon. This provides insulation and increases the velocity of impulse propagation. The structure of myelin is maintained by a group of myelin proteins. Peripheral myelin protein-22 (PMP-22) is a 22 KDa glycoprotein, originally identified following nerve crush injury, that is found within SCs and is identical to the growth arrest specific protein GAS-3. The PMP-22 gene is regulated by two alternative promoters immediately upstream of two alternative non-coding exons. In order to study temporal and spatial expression of the PMP-22 gene and regulation of SC ensheathment and myelination, a transgenic mouse expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP) driven by the myelin specific PMP-22 promoter was produced. To achieve this the PI promoter isolated from genomic DNA was initially incorporated into a plasmid containing the EGFP gene. In vitro transfection studies demonstrated appropriate expression of EGFP fluorescence. Microinjection of the transgene into pre- implantation fertilised embryos gave rise to three transgenic lines as confirmed by Southern blot and PGR. One founder expressed the transgene in a tissue specific manner. Mosaicism of expression both within an individual and between individuals was noted. In vitro manipulations showed that the expression patterns observed were independent of axonal contact and myelination but could be influenced by the extracellular matrix. These GFP expressing transgenic mice potentially provide a means to determine the dynamics of SC-axon interactions during myelination and the behaviour of transplanted SCs into myelin deficient regions and the SCs response to injury. The main objective of this work, which was the synthesis of water-soluble polymers for scale formation inhibition on stainless steel surfaces, has been achieved. Following an introduction and discussion of the background of the work (Chapter 1), the synthesis and characterisation of various monomers, norbomenes with alkylene ether side chains terminated by trialkyl ammonium salts, is described (Chapter 2). These monomers were polymerised to give water-soluble materials, as described in Chapter 3. The nature of the polymers involved and the development of special techniques for their characterisation is explained in Chapter 4. The amphiphilic water-soluble polymers prepared were used as additives in a detergent solution for scale inhibition tests. The variation in the structures of the polymers prepared allowed the study of the effects of different factors on scale inhibition, including the molecular weights of the polymers, the lengths of the alkylene ether side chains, and the nature of the trialkyl ammonium salt functionality. Most of the materials synthesised had an inhibiting effect on scale formation on the stainless steel substrate, in that treated surfaces allowed an easier cleaning of the samples. This study allowed the identification of a polymer structure showing good properties for scale inhibition, which may provide a lead for future development.

The production of three gauge bosons in high-energy collisions - in particular in view of a next-linear collider with center of mass energies in the TeV range - offers an unique opportunity to probe the Standard Model (SM) of today's particle physics. In this thesis we pay particular attention to the electroweak sector of the theory. We investigate the gauge structure {i. e. possible deviations from the SM predictions of gauge boson self-interactions manifest e. g. in anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings and Radiation zeros) as well as electroweak radiative corrections in order to improve theoretical predictions for SM processes. Quartic gauge boson couplings can be regarded as a direct window on the sector of electroweak symmetry breaking. We have studied the impact of three such anomalous couplings on the processes e+e(^-) → WWγ, ZZγ and Zγγ at LEP2 and a future linear collider. In certain high-energy scattering processes involving charged particles and the emission of one or more photons, the scattering amplitude vanishes for particular configurations of the final state particles. The fact that gauge symmetry is a vital ingredient for the cancellation to occur means that radiation zeros can be used to probe physics beyond the standard model. For example anomalous electroweak gauge boson couplings destroy the delicate cancellation necessary for the zero to occur. We have studied the process qq → WWγ. To match the expected experimental precision at future linear colliders, improved theoretical predictions beyond next-to-leading order are required. By choosing an appropriate gauge, we have developed a formalism to calculate such corrections for arbitrary electroweak processes. As an example we consider here the processes e(^+)e → f f and e(^+)e(^-) → W(^+)(_T)W(^-)(_T), W(^+)(_L)W(^-)(_L) and study the perturbative structure of the electroweak Sudakov logarithms by means of an explicit two-loop calculation. In this way we investigate how the Standard Model, with its mass gap between the photon and Z boson in the neutral sector, compares to unbroken theories like QED and QCD. We observe that the two-loop corrections are consistent with an exponentiation of the one-loop corrections. In this sense the Standard Model behaves like an unbroken theory at high energies.

The thesis uses performance to elucidate the politics of sports commentary. In contrast to Williams' assertion that TV sports maintain a strong sense of their independence despite control and commodification by government or commerce (1989) and Kennedy's suggestion that the significance of sport is not tied to ideology (2001), the thesis argues that sports commentary, however implicitly, asserts neoliberal authority within sporting broadcasts. This written thesis and the Practice as Research articulates and critically contextualises the performance of sports commentary resulting in the production of a postdramatic theatre performance referred to as PhD Practice (2016), DVD documentation of the live event, a script and critical writing. Focusing on the commentary of the charity fun-runner in the Big City Marathon (BCM) the thesis uses Fischer-Lichte's notion of performance as event (2008) as a framework to examine how sports commentary changes the way an event is received and subsequently perceived. Through the creation of a performance event that renders the strategies of the sports commentator (Whannel, 1992) as an event of text (Turner, 2009), the research articulates a gap between the event and how that event is framed, reframed and enframed (Žižek, 2014) by the commentary. The thesis subsequently argues that the position taken by the commentator complicates Fischer-Lichte's autopoietic feedback loop (2008), enacting a degree of sovereignty (Agamben, 1995) over the event, contradicting the way in which the feedback loop purports to neutralise the sovereign position of the performer in postdramatic theatre (Lehmann, 2006). This partially sovereign position maintained by the commentator manipulates the audience into a pattern of consent that mirrors the enactment of neoliberal authority (Harvey, 2005). The commentator is thus able to reframe mass participation in the BCM, so that fun-runners and spectators are made to perform as neoliberal subjects, contextualised by capitalist charity (Livingstone, 2013), complicit with neoliberal ideology. This approach represents significant developments in two distinct areas. Firstly, considering sports commentary as an event of text (Turner, 2009) represents a distinctive contribution to the study of event based performance and provides a position from which to articulate a practical and political critique of the autopoietic feedback loop (Fischer-Lichte, 2008). Secondly, the use of performance to examine sports commentary, as an example of commentary as a broad cultural phenomenon, contributes to discourse around the performance of ideology.

A fundamental assertion of the resource-based view (RBV) is that a firm gains competitive advantage through the exploitation of developed or acquired resources that are valuable, rare, in-imitable, and non-substitutable (VRIN). The purpose of this study is to examine the micro-foundations of the individual level precursor process in resource development prior to gaining competitive advantage. The study does not claim to explain a causal link between resource and competitive advantage. The study explores the process of embedding individual level managerial attributes or capabilities of competency and confidence in human capital resource in the knowledge intensive Canadian medical healthcare sector. The medical healthcare setting provided a unique and important setting to investigate and empirically test the micro-foundations of RBV. The study investigated the impact of management training and education of Canadian medical professionals’ self-reported confidence and competency on various clinical and management tasks. The results of the study indicated that, first, for a number of management tasks; there is a statistically significant increase in self-reported competency if the medical professionals had some form of formal management education and/or training. Second, a high degree of competency and confidence in clinical tasks was observed and was not affected by management education. Third, different types of management training can produce small but statistically significant differences in the level of self-rated competency in management tasks. The primary conclusion of the study was first, in the micro-foundation investigation, that individual level attributes or managerial capabilities of confidence and competency can be embedded in the development of the human capital resource through management training and education. Second, the individual level attributes or managerial capabilities of medical professionals, once embedded through management training in the medical healthcare setting, fulfill the VRIN criteria as set by the RBV for a firm to gain competitive advantage. The study further offers a mixed methods approach template to study the micro-foundation of the RBV. Finally, the study, through empirical findings, makes a mid-level theoretical contribution supporting the underpinnings of the resource-based view concepts related to human capital resource development.

The aim of this thesis was to determine whether the blood flow velocities in the peripheral vascular system measured using phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging, PC-MRI, techniques could be used in the same way that blood flow velocities measured using spectral Doppler ultrasound are used to aid in the diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease. Specifically, we aimed to investigate the measurement of maximum velocities and the use of maximum velocity ratios; an area of investigation which has been neglected in studies of PC-MRI blood flow quantification to date. A series of optimisation and comparison studies were carried out using in-house developed test phantoms. Key to the in-vitro work was the establishment of a dual modality flow test system which would allow comparison of identical flow conditions measured using ultrasound and MRI. The work was complemented by in-vivo studies in healthy volunteers. A 4D PC-MRI commercial work-in-progress protocol and software package became available during the study and was evaluated in-vitro and in-vivo using similar methods as for the 2D PC-MRI studies. The main findings of the thesis were that 2D PC-MRI measurement of maximum velocities significantly underestimated those measured using spectral Doppler ultrasound. However, if corrections were applied to account for the overestimation of ultrasound maximum velocity due to spectral broadening, then the two methods were in agreement. In contrast, the use of maximum velocity ratios showed no difference between spectral Doppler ultrasound and 2D PC-MRI measurements. It was noted that one of the potential problems with the use of 2D PC-MRI in the measurement of the maximum velocity at a stenosis is the accurate positioning of the 2D velocity encoded slice in the stenotic jet. 4D PC-MRI, with a time resolved velocity encoded volume dataset, offers a potential solution to this. However, our evaluation of 4D PC-MRI showed that it can significantly underestimate both maximum velocities and maximum velocity ratios in comparison with 2D PC-MRI and spectral Doppler ultrasound and requires further development before it can be used for peripheral vascular applications.

S.pneumoniae is the leading cause of bacterial pneumonia and meningitis. Pneumonia alone has been estimated to kill more children under the age of five than that caused by AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. The current vaccines which are used to prevent pneumococcal infection only protect against a small number of the 90+ serotypes currently identified. Current issues which may prevent the long term use of these vaccines is capsular switching, a phenomenon observed where some strains are able to escape the vaccine through switching their capsule genes. Further serotype replacement has been shown to occur since the introduction of the PCV7 vaccine, where serotypes not protected against by the vaccine have caused a higher incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease compared to the pre vaccine era. One strategy to avoid this is via the use of a multi-component protein based vaccine which is serotype independent. The pneumococcus is normally found as a harmless commensal yet can also cause invasive disease as stated above, the pneumococcus is also the leading cause of otitis media. The ability for the pathogen to occupy a number of different niches and evade host defences is attributed to its large cache of virulence factors, including numerous cell surface adhesins. The ability of the bacteria to regulate genes required for adaptation to a specified niche is vital for survival. In this study a number of signalling systems that are able to modulate gene expression (specifically virulence factors) to facilitate adaptation to varying environmental conditions are assessed to determine the genes they regulate. Further key environmental signals are evaluated to determine the effect they have on regulation of important cell surface adhesins. The main systems used to modulate global expression changes are two-component signal transduction systems (TCS). 13 TCS and one orphan response regulator are encoded in the pneumococcal genome. Little information is available with regards to the importance of each system, whether each system regulates its own separate collection of genes and the extent to which cross regulation may occur between these systems. This study used whole genome expression analysis data obtained through microarray analysis of single and double TCS mutants to assess the potential cross regulation of two chosen systems. A number of the systems have also been shown to regulate the same islet, which encodes a pilus. Measuring expression of the islet itself enabled the role of the systems shown to regulate the islet to be assessed for potential interactions between the systems and whether a hierarchy exists. The pneumococcus is highly genetically variable due to its ability to become naturally competent, taking up DNA from the environment and recombining it into its genomic DNA to aid genetic variation and survival. The new era of whole genome sequencing has begun to shed light on just how variable this pathogen is. Although a number of TCS have been shown to regulate pilus expression, with the use of whole genome sequencing of two closely related strains (one contains reduced pili expression levels) a number of other factors have also been identified which have been shown to alter pilus expression, this includes a serine/ threonine protein kinase, pyruvate oxidase and lactate oxidase. Further the pneumococcus has been shown to respond to exogenously added hydrogen peroxide which increases pilus expression levels. Levels of hydrogen peroxide may act as a key environmental cue to signal to the bacterium that they are present in the nasopharynx and require increased levels of cell surface adhesins.

This thesis is the first extensive consideration of the life and work of Fionn Mac Colla (1906-1975). In particular, it considers the influence of Gaelic language, culture and nationalism on Mac Colla’s corpus. Until now, critical reception of Mac Colla’s writing has been dominated by the legacy of the latter stages of his career, meaning that he has been seen solely as an embittered and polemical writer, motivated only by an angry reaction to what he saw as the negative impact of Scotland’s Reformation. This study argues that such criticism fails to acknowledge that Mac Colla’s creative output was, in fact, far more wide-reaching and complex. The thesis first considers Mac Colla’s genealogy and biography – placing his novels within their cultural and political context – in order to establish the first comprehensive portrait of the man and his work, and to establish the relevance of his writing to a modern readership. Attention is then turned to The Albannach (1932) in the conviction that this is a major work in the canon of modern Scottish literature and deserves extensive reassessment with regard to its political and Gaelic cultural contexts. This study then focuses on the work that Mac Colla contributed to the periodical The Free Man. This impassioned and polemical writing has neither been fully researched nor explored and its analysis makes a significant new contribution to our understanding of Mac Colla’s achievement. Lastly, the examination of And the Cock Crew (1945) highlights the peak and the turning point of his legacy in critical terms. This study contends that Mac Colla’s representation of the relationship between Scottish nationalism and Gaelic culture from the Highland Clearances to the 1930s was both politically and culturally radical. It is concluded that his writing, when examined in this context, proves him to be a novelist whose early work offers more sophistication than has hitherto been explored, and ultimately extends his reputation far beyond that of a promising writer of unfulfilled early potential.

The population genetic structure of two species of invasive non-indigenous riparian weeds in the Northeast of England was investigated using microsatellite markers. Heracleum mantegazzianum and Impatiens glandulifera were introduced into the UK from Asia. The first records of the species in the Tees, Tyne and Wear catchment areas were in 1944 and 1892 respectively. Both species have spread rapidly, and are present over a wide area of the catchments. The pattern of genetic variation was investigated in order to determine the importance of anthropogenic introduction, and life-history and dispersal strategies to the distribution of the species. Twelve populations of each species were sampled from the Tees, Tyne and Wear catchments as well as an independent population for comparison. Genomic libraries were constructed and screened for dinucleotide repeat microsatellite loci. Four polymorphic loci of H. mantegazzianum and three of I. glandulfera were identified, and each species was also screened for variation using one universal chloroplast microsatellite locus. A large amount of variation was found in both species as the loci of H. mantegazzianum had between nine and twenty alleles and those of I. glandulifera between eight and sixteen alleles. Results revealed greater overall variation between populations from different catchments than those in the same catchment. Within a catchment, there was evidence of isolation by distance for both species in one out of two catchments examined. Populations of I. glandulifera showed greater temporal variation and there was more variation both overall and within a catchment in this species. This is likely to be due to the larger number of individuals present, and the wider distribution of this species. Low levels of chloroplast variation were found in both species. This may reflect a lack of variation in the material introduced into the UK.

We present a Curtis Schmidt CCD survey of two strips of the sky overlapping with the NGC and SGC 2dFGRS fields. When this survey is used in conjunction with data from the APM Galaxy Survey, DUKST, 2dFGRS and 2MASS, we find that there is a hole in the SGC distribution of galaxies of 100 x60 in angular extent which extends to z~0.1. The magnitude of this galaxy number deficiency is 30% . The two-point correlation function for our CTIO data is calculated and we find that there is excess power in our SGC function with the break occurring on larger angular scales relative to that in the NGC. When we take into account the effect of the integral constraint we find that a power law form of the two-point correlation function extending beyond ~100h(^-1) Mpc cannot be ruled out, and we show that this kind of pure power law behaviour is an example of what might be needed to explain the hole we claim exists in the SGC distribution of galaxies. We also find evidence of bias from the fact that the galaxy number deficiency in the 2dF SGC n(z) is greater when more instrinsically luminous galaxies are sampled. We also investigate the clustering properties of a sample of faint blue galaxies at z=l-2 and are able to use our CTIO clustering results in order to constrain the galaxy correlation length in the local Universe where we find that r(_0)=4.7h(^-1)Mpc. By parametrising the clustering evolution using the clustering growth parameter ϵ, we find that our faint blue galaxies are consistent with an ϵ=0.1 model, which corresponds to a scenario where clustering is approximately fixed in proper coordinates. Finally, we investigate whether the presence of dust in such faint blue galaxies could have an impact in the sub-mm wave-band. We show that by using either a 1/ƛ or Calzetti absorption law for the dust and re-distributing the evolved spiral galaxy ultraviolet (UV) radiation into the far infrared (FIR), we can account for all of the 'faint'(≤ ImJy) 850μm galaxy counts and a significant proportion of the sub-mm extra-galactic background.

Luminescent lanthanide complexes have proven to be a productive area of research due in essence to their unique emission properties enabling their use in a variety of applications. A major drawback to using lanthanides is their low extinction coefficients, so that the antenna effect is often used to overcome this problem. In this way, the antenna chromophore absorbs incoming radiation and transfers the energy to the ion, leading to indirect excitation of the lanthanide. Understanding this mechanism of energy transfer is of fundamental importance both for the theory of the photophysical processes, and for the development of more efficient materials. In this thesis, many of the areas of both the population and the deactivation of the lanthanide excited states are discussed. The time resolved data of the Tm(^3+) ion in a variety of solvents and chelate systems have been measured, and the effects of deuteration on the decay kinetics investigated. The mechanism of energy transfer is followed by detailed kinetic measurements of a complex with a benzophenone containing chromophore. The calculation of the pure radiative lifetime allowed the efficiency of each of the steps involved in the sensitisation process to be determined for the first time. Changing the coordination environment around the ion, even slightly, by the addition of a single CH(_2) group into the arm of the ligand affects the oscillator strength of the hypersensitive transitions in both the Eu(^3+) and Tb(^3+) complexes, and influences the efficiency of energy transfer. Intramolecular sensitisation of Eu(^3+) ions by acetophenone containing ligands was investigated in a series with increasing electron donating ability of the chromophore. It was found that the efficiency of energy transfer increases with the polarity of the antenna, but that in the case of a dimethylamino substituted ligand, the solvent also has a profound effect on the intensity of Eu(^3+) emission. Energy transfer to bound Eu(^3+) and Tb(^3+) ions in aqueous micellar systems is demonstrated, with the process dependent on the hydrophobic properties of the chromophore and the properties of the surfactant. Photoinduced electron transfer reactions are found to occur in ethoxybenzyl substituted complexes with the emission from the chromophore and from the lanthanide ion dependent upon the lanthanide reduction potential and the AG value of both the forward and backward electron transfer reactions.

El ajo es ampliamente conocido por sus propiedades benéficas para la salud y por sus características sensoriales. Además de su consumo en fresco, se elaboran diversos subproductos industriales, entre ellos se destaca el ajo deshidratado. Este producto se emplea tanto para consumo como condimento como para la elaboración de fitofármacos. Un atributo de calidad buscado en el polvo de ajo es que tenga elevados contenidos de principios bioactivos,
especialmente, para la elaboración de preparaciones galénicas. Los fitoquímicos presentes en el ajo son compuestos organoazufrados y el más importante y representativo del grupo es la alicina. Diversos autores coinciden en que las tabletas comerciales de ajo en polvo evidencian grandes fluctuaciones en el contenido de alicina. Estas pueden deberse a las diferencias en la materia prima y a las pérdidas durante el proceso de deshidratación industrial. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar los niveles de alicina en polvos de ajo obtenidos mediante distintos procesos de deshidratación. Se trabajó con ajo cv Sureño INTA. Los bulbos fueron seleccionados y los dientes pelados en forma manual. La pasta de ajo fue obtenida mediante molino helicoidal y homogeneizador. Los tratamientos fueron: deshidratación en Spray, en horno Terminador y en horno de deshidratación de Usos Múltiples. También se evaluó la eficacia del empleo de
aditivos microencapsulantes (goma arábiga) en los distintos tratamientos de deshidratados: tipo Spray, Lecho Espumado. La evaluación de los procesos fue realizada mediante la medición de humedad y alicina (HPLC). Además, se cuantificó alicina en productos de ajo deshidratado disponibles en el mercado. De todos los tratamientos, el proceso de deshidratación Spray evidenció las menores pérdidas de alicina, en las condiciones bajo estudio. De lo que se

This research explores the relationship between risk factors associated with cannabis use in young people. This thesis addresses the assessment of cannabis use and its association with risk factors and implicit associations, and the suitability of these for targeting at-risk cannabis users, and how theories of drug instrumentalization and normalization frame cannabis use behaviour in young people in contact with drug services using a mixed-methods approach. Additionally, this research addresses the implications for indicated prevention and the targeting of young people considered at risk for developing problematic cannabis use behaviours. This PhD reviews the scientific literature on cannabis use, with an emphasis on prevalence and use behaviours alongside associated risk and protective factors. Cannabis markets and potency, along with policy implications, are also explored. Furthermore, this PhD aims to understand how cannabis use behaviour assessment impacts on the identification of risk, and the subsequent implications for identifying those who might benefit from further support. Frequent, habitual cannabis users and their relationship with risk factors, including implicit cognitions, and use behaviour assessment are explored. Additionally, cannabis users in touch with drug services and their use behaviour are explored through frameworks of drug use instrumentalization and normalization. Lastly, the main findings of this dissertation are surmised and future research and policy implications are discussed. This PhD illustrates the importance of cannabis use behaviour assessment in identifying young people at-risk for developing problematic use behaviours. This thesis provides evidence that suggests that psychopathology, and the over-instrumentalization of use as a self-medication, coping mechanism may be associated with the development of problematic use outcomes. These findings are contextualised within the current cultural and political environments in the United Kingdom and discussed in regards to their suitability for indicated prevention.

The first part of this thesis is written in the form of a literature review and aims to review the empirical literature that underpins Jeff Young’s conceptual theory of early maladaptive schema development. Links are made between schema development and forms of childhood adversity, retrospective parenting experiences and attachment style. The review highlights a gap between Young’s widely accepted conceptual theory of EMS and the empirical evidence base. However, the apparent relevance of EMS to a wide range of psychopathologies and forms of childhood adversity provides a rationale to continue future research in this area. Theoretical, Clinical and research implications are discussed. The second, more substantive part of the thesis explores whether EMS have a mediating role in the association between attachment style and psychopathology in children in care. 42 children in care (aged 13 to 21) completed measures of attachment style, schemas and psychopathology. Total schema severity mediated the relationship between avoidant attachment style and psychopathology. Conclusions: Findings support the relevance of EMS to understanding the link between attachment style and psychopathology in children in care. Practitioner points: • Schema theory may provide a useful contribution to understanding the mental health needs of children in care. • Replication in a larger sample group is required.

L'eix central de l'estudi gira entorn els orígens i desenvolupament de la disciplina documental a l'estat espanyol, prenent com a fil conductor les variacions existents en la denominació de la disciplina. A més d'estudiar els principals textos teòrics on s'anomena la disciplina, s'inclouen cinc altres perspectives per tal d'incloure i tenir ben present la presència social de la disciplina. Aquestes són la formació, la professió, la política, la producció científica, el sector sòcio-econòmic. La tesi es divideix en dues grans parts. A la primera s'hi troba una àmplia introducció sobre els orígens i desenvolupament de la disciplina documental arreu del món, i serveix per emmarcar la situació a l'estat espanyol (part 2), el gruix fonamental de la tesi. A les conclusions es destaca la utilització prioritària dels termes documentació i informació i documentació per tal de designar la disciplina, recomanant-se l'ús i adopció del darrer.
