Aim/Purpose: This particular study aims to contribute to the recent scholarly inquiry of doctoral student identity work within collegiate, attendee-driven writing networks. The study closely explores the implementation and impact of supportive measures in academia for novice researchers in the form of writing events. This paper draws on two case studies of doctoral students reflecting on the impact of their participation in social, academic literacy networks. The project also explores how these individuals were able to think about and mediate their own identities as they developed their reputations as experts in their field. Background: Completing a doctoral degree is a rich, rewarding endeavour; however, it is also a challenging process. Novice academics are vulnerable to psychosocial and emotional stresses associated with being an academic within the highly competitive environment, such as isolation and burnout. More recently, scholarly interest has emerged regarding the academy’s pressures upon novice researchers, such as those entering full-time academic roles after completing their doctoral studies. Methodology: A qualitative research design was implemented where data collection for this project involved in-depth semi-structured interviewing. The nature of the semi-structured interviews enabled professional dialogue with each participant. The semi-structured nature of the interviews enabled flexibility where follow-up questions and probes allowed for richer data gathering. Data analysis occurred within a sociocultural framework. Contribution: Explicitly focusing on doctoral students, we build upon existing knowledge and understanding of how novice academic writers negotiate, interpret, and understand the impact of their research dissemination and roles. While exploring how these individuals think about and mediate their identities during the initial period of asserting their reputations as experts in the field, this study looks at how collegiate, attendee-driven writing networks can support novice academics to meet the demands for quality research dissemination and strive to meet the metrics expected of them. Findings: This research has found that novice researchers who thrive on social interaction may often find collegiality lacking in their professional lives. Furthermore, those who can find a support network that fosters positive self-belief and provides a means for sharing successes benefit from countless opportunities for empowerment as novice researchers work through their doctorates. Recommendations for Practitioners: This research confirms and provides details around how a collegiate atmosphere for novice academics helps mitigate feelings of isolation, vulnerability, and a lack of self-confidence in their scholastic ability. Overcoming such feelings occurs through learning from peers, overcoming isolation and learning self-managing techniques. Therefore, establishing spaces for collegiate, attendee-driven writing events within doctoral settings is encouraged. Recommendation for Researchers: Further research into the benefits of collegiate, attendee-driven writing events and supporting the process of academic writing and dissemination can focus on transdisciplinary writing groups, as this particular study was centred within a specific faculty. Impact on Society: Within the neoliberal context of higher education, novice academics can benefit from attendee-driven writing events intended to empower them and provide growth opportunities. Through participation in collegiate, attendee driven writing networks, which are social and peer-based, we show that novice academics can learn how to combat unsettling feelings of perfectionism, isolation, fear of inadequacy, and failure. The social element is central to understanding how writers can increase their productivity and dissemination by writing alongside peers. Future Research: Novice researchers also represent early career researchers; thus, exploring collegiate, attendee-driven writing events for practicing academics is also encouraged. As noted above, exploring the potential of transdisciplinary writing networks would also be of value.

Introduction. The aricle studies the Cyrillic literacy of Mongolians through the use of sociolinguistic methods. Mongolians had been using the Mongolian script from ancient times through 1921, and since then by the 1930s the traditional script was replaced because it was considered obsolete and feudal. In 1941, Mongolia officially switched to modified Latin alphabet which was used for some time. However, two months later this decision was cancelled, and three months thereafter Cyrillic alphabet was introduced — on March 25, 1941, the Mongolian People’s Republic officially adopted the Cyrillic writing system. Mongolian script has been taught at secondary schools since the mid-1980s and under the influence of democracy and transparency, the national idea of the public has revived, and their current desire is to use the national script officially. Mongolians also use the Latin script in the Internet and mobile telephony. The Law on Mongolian Language was approved in 2013 and is being implemented, and this law stipulates that from 2025 onwards official documents shall be written in Cyrillic and Classical Mongolian. Results. The work investigates how Mongolians use three writing systems — Cyrillic, Latin and Traditional Mongolian. However, the official script (and literacy to be assessed) is still Cyrillic. The paper uses methods of social linguistics to assess Cyrillic literacy among citizens aged 16–30, 31–40, and over 40. The Cyrillic literacy skills are as follows: 16–30 year olds — 47.5 %, 31–40 year olds — 78.4 %, 41 and older — 52.1 %. The average value of Cyrillic literacy skills across all the three age groups is 59.3 %. The influence of Latin alphabet on Cyrillic skills for 16–30 year olds proves a matter of concern.

Aim: This study analyzes factors associated with dimensions of health literacy (HL) functional, communicative and critical among public health service users with chronic non-communicable diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical research was carried out in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, with adults and older adults attending Family Health Units (FHU). Data were collected by oral exam (CPOD and CPI) and a questionnaire on systemic conditions, sociodemographic factors, health behaviors and HLS (HLS-14). The outcomes consisted of functional, communicative, and critical HL dimensions dichotomized by median (high and low), which were analyzed by chi-square test (p<0.05) to find associations with the variables studied. Results: The study sample comprised 238 FHU users with 62.7 (± 10.55) mean age, of which 47.5% (n=113) showed high functional HL, 50.0% (n=119) high communicative HL, and 46.2% (n=110) high critical HL. High functional HL was associated with men (p<0.05). Functional and communicative HL were associated with having higher education (p<0.001 and p=0.018, respectively). High communicative and critical HL were associated with regular use of dental and medical services (p<0.05). Individuals with low functional HL were more likely to present poor tooth brushing (p=0.020). High HL (in all three dimensions) was associated with regular flossing and having more teeth (p<0.05). Conclusion: Functional, communicative and critical HL were associated with health behaviors and clinical outcomes, whereas the functional dimension was also associated with sociodemographic factors. HL dimensions allowed to differentiate health-related factors.

Background. Both underweight and overweight are public health concerns in Japan. Several studies examined the association between health literacy (HL) and obesity status in the general population; however, there is limited information on young adults. In addition, the association between HL and underweight status has not been extensively investigated. Aim. To examine the association between HL and underweight/overweight status among young Japanese adults aged 20 to 39 years. Method. This study was based on a cross-sectional survey of population-representative adults. HL was assessed using a questionnaire validated in Japanese adults. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using self-reported weight and height. Participants were divided into two groups by HL score using the median score (lower vs. higher HL). The association between HL and underweight (BMI <18.5) or overweight (BMI ≥25.0) was examined using multinomial logistic regression analyses after adjusting for potential confounders. Results. In total, 476 women and 454 men were included in the analyses. Prevalence of underweight and overweight was 20.8% and 10.3% in women and 8.8% and 20.3% in men, respectively. In women, 45.1% of normal weight, 47.5% of underweight, and 30.6% of overweight had higher HL. Among men, 50.3% of normal weight, 35.0% of underweight, and 44.6% of overweight had higher HL. Bivariate analyses showed no statistically significant association between HL level and underweight/overweight status. Even after adjusting for potential confounders, these associations did not change. Discussion and Conclusion. This study suggests that HL scores may not be associated with underweight or overweight status in Japanese adults.

Since their introduction, the use of electronic cigarettes has increased considerably in the population and among adolescents. Determinants of smoking conventional cigarettes were thoroughly studied in various social groups. However, we know less about the predictors of the use of e-cigarettes in younger generations. The main aim of this study was the assessment of the factors associated with the use of electronic cigarettes among high school students. Specifically, the roles of health literacy (HL) and health locus of control (HLC) were addressed. The analysis was based on the data from a ‘pen-and-pencil’ survey performed in a large sample of 2223 high school students from southern Poland. The tools used in the survey encompassed 133 items, including a 47-item European Health Literacy Survey questionnaire, an 18-item Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale, and a set of questions asking about the health behaviors, and sociodemographic and economic characteristics of respondents. In the study sample, 47.5% of the respondents had used e-cigarettes in the past, and 18.6% had used them in the last month. HL was not significantly associated with dependent variables reflecting the use of e-cigarettes. Two types of external HLC were associated with using e-cigarettes in the past, and ‘Chance’ HLC (CHLC) was also associated with their use in the last month. Males, students of schools providing vocational training, and students declaring more Internet use during the week showed a higher likelihood of ever using e-cigarettes or using them in the last month. Students smoking conventional cigarettes were also more prone to use e-cigarettes. To sum up, it was an unexpected result that HL is not associated with the use of e-cigarettes. A greater likelihood of using e-cigarettes was positively associated with higher CHLC scores, as in the case of smoking traditional cigarettes.

Although research on the literal and interpretive translation methods have been extensively explored, little attention has been invested in criticizing these translation methods. This research aims to evaluate the interpretive translation method from the canon of translation studies by investigating some techniques, methods, and ideology of the translation in Muhammad Thalib’s Quranic Translation of surah al-Wāqiah into Indonesian. This research employs a critical qualitative-cased study design. The results indicate that the translator applied several translation techniques in the translation of surah al-Wāqiah: established equivalence (47.05%), amplification (explication) (25.16%), implicitation (8.31%), modulation (6.12%), amplification (paraphrasing) (5.03%), transposition (2.85%), compensation (2.63%), discursive creation (1.31%), reduction (0.66%), pure borrowing (0. 44%), particularization (0.22%), and paraphrasing discursive creation (0.22%). These techniques are categorized under communicative translation method and domestication translation ideology. This research implies that the interpretive translation method is not dependable and serves as a unit of analysis to dissect Qur'anic translation text, given that it lies at the meso level. Therefore, this method must be reconstructed using translation techniques at the micro level. For this reason, the translators need to be more competent not only in bilingual, transfer, and cultural competencies, but also in declarative and procedural translation competencies as well. Keywords: Critical Translation, Muhammad Thalib, Al-Qur’an Translation, Translation Method, Tarjamah Tafsīriyah.

Peter Pan Syndrome is a concept that used to characterize the “never-growing” men who have reached an adult age, but cannot face their adult sensations and responsibilities. Individuals with Peter Pan Syndrome have difficulties in social and professional relationships because of their irresponsible behaviors and narcissistic properties. The purpose of this study is to develop a scale in order to measure the level of Peter Pen Syndrome in male individuals. In accordance with this purpose, the draft form was sent to experts to get their feedback, and some statements have been revised in accordance with the feedback. The Peter Pan Syndrome Scale is a twenty-two-item self-report measurement, and each item is evaluated on five-point Likert Type scale. Construct validity of the scale was determined by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a three-factor model was created, namely, “Escape from Responsibility”, “Power Perception,” and “Never Growing Child”. EFA results shows that these three factors were describing 47.05% of the variance. Results of EFA were verified by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The internal consistency coefficient and the confidence coefficient of the split-half were used to determine the reliability of the scale. The Cronbach’s alpha value was found to be 0.88 for the total scale.

Agave potatorum Zucc is a wild agave used for mezcal (a traditional alcoholic beverage) production in Oaxaca, Mexico, but little information is available on its response to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization. The effect of different N (0, 23.7, 47.5, and 71.2 mg N per kg soil) and P (0, 14.1, 28.3, and 42.5 mg P per kg soil) doses on A. potatorum growth, nutrition and total soluble solid in stem (TSS) was assessed using a two-factor completely randomized design under nursery conditions. Relative to the control, the highest increase in response variables was unfolded leaf number (UL) 37.3%, leaf relative chlorophyll (LRCC) 9.6% and leaf nitrate content (LNO) 42.7% with 71.2 mg N per kg soil; plant height (PH) 39.1%, stem diameter (SD) 17.2%, and leaf dry weight (LDW) 70.2% with 47.5 mg N per kg soil; leaf P content (LP) 78.2% with 23.7 mg N per kg soil; root density (RD) 28.5% and LRCC 5.5% with 28.3 mg P per kg soil; LP 34.7%, LNO 16.8% with 14.1 mg P per kg soil; and TSS 19.0% with 42.5 mg P per kg soil. The combined application of N and P also enhanced stem dry weight, root dry weight, root length, SD, LDW, PH, UL, LP, TSS, LNO and LCRR. The application of N and P favors growth, nutrition and TSS in A. potatorum; therefore, it could be an important alternative for agronomic management of this agave species under nursery conditions. Further research is recommended to assess the response of A. potatorum to N and P fertilization under field conditions.

Background: Supracondylar fractures of humerus are the most common elbow fractures seen in children. Objective: To describe the patients’ condition and to evaluate the treatment and the outcome. Materials and method: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 40 consecutive patients with 40 displaced, supracondylar fractures of the humerus treated between January 2019 and December 2020, in Aden. The obtained data were sex, age, side of injury, time between injury and fixation, trial of reduction and complications. The collected data were tabulated and statistical analysis was done by estimating rates, means and standard deviations, Fisher test was used and p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. The statistical software package SPSS version 17 was used. Results: The total study patients were 40 patients. Twenty-one (52.5%) were males and 19 (47.5%) were females. The age of the patients ranged between 2 to 10 years and the mean age was 6.6 ± 2.1 years. Twenty-four (60%) had the fracture on the right arm, and 16 (40%) had it on the left arm. All the patients underwent surgery within 24 hours of injury. The mean time was 8.1 ± 4.5 hours. There were 11 (27.5%) cases of once trial reduction, 14 (35%) of twice trial reduction and 15 (37.5%) of three times trial reduction. The average removal of K-wires was 3.55 weeks. Twenty-six (65%) patients were treated by III lateral K-wires fixation and 14 (35%) were treated by crossed K-wire fixation. Post-operatively, (17.5%) patients got neuropraxia in the crossed K-wire group (n = 14), and none in the III lateral K-wire group. Two (5.0%) patients got angulation, one in the crossed K-wire group (n = 14), and one in the III lateral K-wire group (n = 26). Cupitus varus were seen in 2 (5.0%) patients in the crossed K-wire group and 2 (5.0%) in the III lateral K-wire group. Stiffness was found in the III lateral K-wire group with 2 (5.0%) patients. Conclusion: The delay in surgical treatment may cause a number of complications. Key words: Treatment, supracondylar fracture, humerus, children, Aden
