Throughout the past century, the United Arab Emirates’ leadership realized the significant importance of initiating novel and innovative strategies to market themselves and contribute in their successful position among the global network, thus their obligation was to employ both short and long term strategies that help in the process of successful promotion, insertion and enhanced situation in the foreign market. Highlighting Abu Dhabi as the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and distinguishing it from the rest of the country, Dubai in particular, was the crucial vision of Al Sheikh Zayed Al Nahayan. Where the collaborative emirate’s leadership had the potential to mark Abu Dhabi as “the global capital city” (Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, 2007).     This research discusses place-branding and marketing of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, where the emirate’s brand marketing strategies relies on the desert, sea, heritage and the city as key elements towards placing the capital of the United Arab Emirates on the global map, in addition to improving the reputation of the middle east in general and Abu Dhabi in specific, through presenting two study cases: Masder City and Saadiyat Island, which are viewed as vivid examples of the emirate of Abu Dhabi brand marketing strategies implementation focus.

Reintroduction of once existing red mangrove, Rhizophora mucronata trials were carried out in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Propagules were procured from Pakistan and cultured in a greenhouse before they were planted alongside existing Avicennia marina forest in two sites of Abu Dhabi emirate, Abu Al Abyad and Ras Ghanada Islands. This study documents the present condition of the plants after 11 years of plantation. Long term survival rate was as high as 81% in Abu Al Abyad while Ras Ghanada experienced a very low survival rate at 10%, primarily due to external factors. In contrast, Ras Ghanada plants showed higher growth with the mean height stands at 2.06 m (SD ± 0.31m), while in Abu Al Abyad it is 1.53 m (SD ± 0.36 m). In Abu Al Abyad, more than one third (36.4%) of surviving plants showed reproductive phenology, whereas in Ras Ghanada it was only 10.3%, despite of greater height classes. Many Rhizophora were also noticed with well-developed stilt roots. This study showed that Rhizophora mucronata can be planted in Abu Dhabi, despite the Emirate's harsh climatic conditions.

Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available upon request. Learning outcomes The purpose of this paper is to enable tourism management and strategic management students to evaluate and analyze tourism activities in the United Arab Emirates by TCA. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of developing tourism in rural areas in the United Arab Emirates and to build up proper strategies. They will be able to perform the organization’s competitive standing using Porter’s Five competitive forces and analyze its business strategies as well. They will be able to analyze the current status of the organization using SWOT analysis and to design alternative strategies for the company using TOWS analysis. Case overview/synopsis The Department of Tourism and Culture – Abu Dhabi, also known as the TCA, is a governmental tourism authority in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi established 14 years ago as part of an economy-diversifying strategy for the non-oil era. The TCA is responsible of creating tourism activities to generate new tourists in Abu Dhabi, which will increase the revenue of the authority and as well increase the gross domestic product of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) economy. Tourism activities have been focused on Abu Dhabi City as is it considered the capital city of the UAE. However, other cities are also part of this strategy, e.g. Al Ain City, which is located in the eastern region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and Al Dhafra City, which is located in the western region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, both of which lack the required infrastructure, population, and tourism activity, due in part at least to the fact that the TCA’s strategy plans have been focused on Abu Dhabi City. Sultan Al Mutawa Al Dhaheri (Al Dhaheri), the TCA’s Executive Director of Tourism, has been responsible for developing tourism in Al Ain City and Al Dhafra, but due to the current situation of the two cities regarding the low revenue growth (and the consequent lack of investors willing to invest) and no critical mass (i.e. a sufficient number of hotel rooms available), Al Dhaheri is facing a dilemma regarding achieving TCA strategy in Al Ain City and Al Dhafra City. Complexity academic level This case study will be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate level students majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Business Administration and Strategic Management. Subject code CSS 12: Tourism and Hospitality.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate residents’ perceptions of tourism’s impact on their support for tourism development in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires from Abu Dhabi residents (n = 407), who represented 30 nationalities residing in the emirate. Based on social exchange theory, structural equation modeling was used to test hypotheses. Findings Results suggest that Abu Dhabi residents perceive the impacts of tourism positively and are more sensitive to the environmental and economic influences of tourism than the social and cultural influences. Research limitations/implications This study was limited to Abu Dhabi residents; findings cannot be generalized to other emirates in the UAE, or other countries. Originality/value This study adds value to extant tourism literature by investigating residents’ perceptions of the influence of tourism in one of the richest cities worldwide, which aspires to be one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the Middle East.

Western Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is a resident breeding species in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Osprey breed from December to March on offshore and nearshore islands and coastal sites across the country. Approximately 90% of the breeding population is found in Abu Dhabi Emirate, making it a critical area for conservation efforts. Due to its significance, Western Osprey has been listed as an Endangered (EN) species in the Abu Dhabi Redlist of Species. In 2023, an Emiratewide comprehensive survey was conducted, covering all coastal sites, as well as nearshore and offshore islands in Abu Dhabi. This was the first such comprehensive census of breeding Ospreys in Abu Dhabi. Data were collected using a customized mobile application with a focus on geo-referencing and photographing all nest structures. Of a total of 339 located nests across more than 60 coastal and island territories, 127 were active. Moreover, 44% (n=148) of all nests were observed on artificial platforms intentionally installed at different breeding territories to support nesting. Whereas 39% (n=133) were built naturally on ground and 17% (n=58) were observed on abandoned high-rise structures. The breeding population of osprey in the UAE is estimated to be 110 breeding pairs. The study established that current breeding population of Ospreys in Abu Dhabi Emirate stands at 127 breeding pairs. This stable breeding population of Osprey indicates the overall well-being of UAE’s coastal and marine environments. The Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency continues to monitor and enforce conservation measures to ensure the protection of this regionally important species and its habitats.

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi heavily relies on seawater desalination for its freshwater needs due to limited available resources. This trend is expected to increase further because of the growing population and economic activity, the rapid decline in limited freshwater reserves, and the aggravating effects of climate change. Seawater desalination in Abu Dhabi is currently done through thermal desalination technologies, such as multi-stage flash (MSF) and multi-effect distillation (MED), coupled with thermal power plants, which is known as co-generation. These thermal desalination methods are together responsible for more than 90% of the desalination capacity in the Emirate. Our analysis indicates that these thermal desalination methods are inefficient regarding energy consumption and harmful to the environment due to CO2 emissions and other dangerous byproducts. The rapid decline in the cost of solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems for energy production and reverse osmosis (RO) technology for desalination makes a combination of these two an ideal option for a sustainable desalination future in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. A levelized cost of water (LCW) study of a solar PV + RO system indicates that Abu Dhabi is well-positioned to utilize this technological combination for cheap and clean desalination in the coming years. Countries in the Sunbelt region with a limited freshwater capacity similar to Abu Dhabi may also consider the proposed system in this study for sustainable desalination.

This paper examines the effect of a number of individual attributes and characteristics on respondents’ intentions to support local cultural entrepreneurship ventures in the Abu Dhabi Emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The objective of the discussion is to capture the effect of a number of individual variables (such as age, gender, and place of residence) as well as tourism phenomena (repeat visit, time of visit) on the importance tourists in Abu Dhabi place on culture and cultural resources. Using binomial probability models, we measure how changes in age, income levels, length of stay, and other variables trigger changes in cultural appreciation among visitors in Abu Dhabi. This approach is based upon a natural extension of the bivariate descriptive analysis usually undertaken in the literature (Zaidi, 2001).

While past studies have considered the relationship between art and architecture, art and society, or society and architecture, few consider all three, let alone when discussing these subjects in the United Arab Emirates. This article presents the evolution of the art scene in that country’s three largest emirates, from its foundation as a federation through today, as a reflection of local societal truths. Since its early days, each concerned emirate—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, has developed an art scene unique from the others, and each one has been housed in different kinds of mostly vernacular—though sometimes academic—architecture. Through data collection of the various types of architecture employed in each emirate, this article explores possible reasons why each state has its own art scene, and what can explain this phenomenon. Abu Dhabi, the wealthy capital, has “starchitect” designed institutions; the more avant-garde Dubai employs recycled industrial hangars (or structures made to look as such); while the more traditional Sharjah repurposes historical structures for artistic use. Over time, each emirate begins to borrow different architectural tendencies hitherto mostly seen in the other states, demonstrative of the constant competition the three emirates have with each other. Beyond the local implications, these structures provide a rich discussion on what is considered vernacular in a modern context, as well as where the definition of one stops and the other begins.

There is a necessity to protect and manage the marine ecosystem towards the conservation of the ecological equilibrium and in turn the sustainability of the fishery resources in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Marine stock enhancement (MSE) proved that releasing hatchery fingerlings of marine animals can improve the abundance of harvest beyond the level supported by natural recruitment. For such programme to be beneficial and economical, considerable investment and scientific efforts are required. Among the concerned entities in the United Arab Emirates, the Aquaculture and Marine Studies (AMSC) in Abu Al Abyad Island successfully released 59 million of juveniles of different finfish species and 96 million juveniles of prawn species in Abu Dhabi waters. In the context of conserving the ecological equilibrium, the AMSC was able to plant an area of 5,026 ha in various areas of Abu Dhabi Emirate with grey mangrove, Avicennia marina; culturing over 21,290 corals of Acropora sp., Porites sp., Cyphastrea sp and Psammocora sp. in an area of 0.5 ha nurseries in Abu Al Abyad and Yasat Islands which will later be transplanted in the degraded reef sites in both islands; and a well-established seagrass coverage of 2500 m2 was achieved in affected areas in Abu Al Abyad Island.

Individuals in the UAE and Abu Dhabi Emirate, in particular, have become increasingly concerned about their private information. This is mainly due to the use of technology, which makes accessing, transmitting and editing personal information faster and easier. Besides the use of technology, and the awareness and understanding of the privacy of expatriates, working in Abu Dhabi Emirate has had an impact on UAE citizens in terms of their rights to privacy. There is a need for organisations to comply with international bodies in protecting individuals rights to privacy and to increase the exploration of culturally sensitive information in the media. These issues have all led to the importance of and need to explore and identify Abu Dhabi Emirate employees perceptions, and the factors influencing their behaviour, towards privacy. The aim of this research was to investigate and analyse factors influencing employees information privacy behaviour and employees perceptions, awareness and behaviour on the handling of private information in the Abu Dhabi Emirate public sector, ADEC, as well as to provide practical recommendations to improve the privacy. The research methods used in this project are based on a mixed-method approach comprising both quantitative and qualitative strategies. Qualitative data collection in this research included face-to-face interviews and focus groups with Abu Dhabi Education Council. Quantitative surveys for all the Abu Dhabi Education Council were also utilised. The research identified the types of information that were considered private and defined privacy in the context of UAE culture. The main factors influencing privacy in Abu Dhabi Emirate employees were identified and analysed such as national culture, organisation culture and perceived benefits as examples. Following this, practical recommendations for changes to promote and enhance privacy in Abu Dhabi Emirate were offered. A model has been developed and designed based on the factors influencing individual information behaviour regarding private information handling, interrelated and influenced. This is essential to provide a practical model capable of acting as a guideline to help organisations, decision makers, and strategic planners in the Abu Dhabi Emirate public sector decide how best to approach privacy policy.

Aviation is an integral part of the infrastructure of the modern civilization. Air transport plays an important role in the global economy and has contributed enormously towards global integration. It supports commerce, tourism and private travel. These positive advantages of the aviation industry involve substantial costs to the environment. Aircraft emit large amounts of air pollutants, degrading air quality. Air pollution in and around airports worldwide is rapidly growing. Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA) is no exception. It is planned to undertake expansion and development at Abu Dhabi airport to meet the requirement of fast growing air traffic, which is expected to reach 30 million passengers annually between 2030-2050. The projected growth of air traffic is likely to result in considerable impact on local air quality and climate. The first aim of this project was to review the available monitoring data and explore what additional measurements would be useful. The second aim was to assess emissions from the various sources on the ground, which will increase with airport development. Thirdly, since CO2 emissions from aircraft is major issue in relation to climate change, this study also aimed to estimate CO2 emissions from aircraft, and provide future projections. Monitoring data from the Abu Dhabi area and monitoring campaigns at the airport have been analysed relating them to characteristics of the surrounding area and airport activities. To obtain higher spatial resolution, diffusion tubes were used although they proved to be of limited use because of extreme meteorological conditions. Data have been collected from various sources on each of the emission related activities at ADIA. An emission inventory of ADIA activities has been generated using Emission Dispersion Modelling System (EDMS) for different air pollutants such as NOx, PM10, and CO. This included emissions from aircraft and ground support sources. The information gathered produced a basis for projections for future growth and development of ADIA during the coming years. CO2 emissions have been assessed based on current aircraft mix and air traffic data at ADIA, combined with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) data. The consequences of projected growth of ADIA for different aircraft types and journeys have been determined.

The formulation of environmental strategies is now a major concern around the world. The Rio Earth Summit (Agenda 21) has led to local authorities taking responsibility for preparing and developing such strategies for sustainable development and the integration of environmental considerations into all development planning activities and projects by taking current economic, social and environmental policies and plans into account. This research has developed an environmental strategy model for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi by identifying environmental problems and concerns and defining environmental priorities. It has, also, developed a framework and organisational structure for environmental institutions in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. To achieve sustainable development and, by taking Agenda 21 as a framework, the research includes a review of sustainable development, Agenda 21, Local Agenda 21 and environmental strategy concepts and the links between these four main concepts. A review of different strategy models is also provided in this research. Examples of other countries' experiences of developing environmental strategies, (UK, Jordan and Oman) are examined and evaluated. This review improves the understanding of the problems faced at each stage of the strategy and it also provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each strategy component. The lessons from these experiences are used to reduce the weaknesses in achieving a well-designed environmental strategy model for the Emirate. This review also suggests the need for a comprehensive approach to the environmental strategy model to overcome some or all of these constraints. This research was developed to gain a better understanding of the Emirate's environmental condition, to provide a new and suitable institutional framework, and to provide an environmental strategy model for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The designed model was tested through conducting questionnaire surveys and a series of interviews with selected professionals and decision-makers in the environmental field. These techniques were used to test the research hypothesis and the analysis was used to provide an indication of any weaknesses in the proposed model. The conclusions show that the proposed model is both innovative and appropriate for implementation as an environmental strategy model for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and recommendations are made for additional research to further improve the model.

A two stage survey was carried out in order, a) to investigate trends and differentials in infant mortality in Abu Dhabi Emirate from 1980 to 1996 and b) to investigate the influence of risk factors on the problem of mortality under five years. The first stage reviewed infant mortality by sex, ethnicity, locality and cause of death. Data about the births and deaths of children were obtained from the Departments of Preventive Medicine in the three Health Regions of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region; 4523 infant deaths were coded according to the 9th revision of the International Classification of Diseases. The underlying causes of death were grouped into six main categories, namely: infections; congenital anomalies; conditions originating in the perinatal period; ill-defined conditions; accidents and miscellaneous. The rates for infant, perinatal, neonatal and postneonatal mortalities decreased substantially during the study period. The values for these mortality rates (per 1000 live births or total births in the case of the perinatal mortality rate) or 21.55, 20.43, 13.42 and 8.13 respectively in 1980 contrasted with their values of 9.15, 12.12, 5.51 and 3.64 in 1996. By contrast, the stillbirth rate showed the least change, declining from 8.4 in 1980 to a minimum of 7.79 per 1000 total births in 1996. The ratio of postneonatal to neonatal mortality rates remained broadly constant during the study period. In 1996, the under-5 mortality per 1000 live births was 13.1 in Abu Dhabi Emirate. Accidents formed the leading cause of death in the 1-5 year old children in the whole population from 1980 to 1996. A multiple regression technique was used to evaluate the independent effect of the variables (sex, nationality and region) upon the infant mortality rate. The rate of decline of the infant mortality rate appeared to be changing during the study period, which made the models containing the square of the year more fitting to the data points.

Police Corruption is a complex widespread phenomenon in many developed and developing countries though the intensity varies from country to country. The current study is one of several studies supported by the UAE government will explore the different ways of police corruption and examine the potential ways of external mechanisms to control and minimize police corruption in the state of Abu Dhabi, which is one of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates. The methodology used for this research was by means of collecting data through a survey method distributed in the form of a questionnaire among a large population of police personnel and the public. The collected data was then analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. This research proved that unacceptable police behaviour existed (64.4%), with traffic, investigation and the immigration departments being the highest. Favouritism and nepotism have been identified as the most types of unacceptable behaviour which exists within the Abu Dhabi police force. Police officers (70%) agree to use violence and excessive force against suspects and (54%) believed that the public were worried about repercussions if any complaint was made about corrupt officers. It was established that unacceptable police behaviour exists in Abu Dhabi police force and traffic, investigation and the immigration departments have been identified with the highest levels of unacceptable police behaviour. Police corruption is more often a local police culture involving favouritism and nepotism that protects and even encourages unacceptable police behaviour. Finally, the research suggests the important role of media, public awareness, and training as remedies that should be adopted for instituting long term reforms. A combination of approaches, as well as federal supervision, is needed.

The aim of this thesis is to explore the factors that affect levels of public confidence in policing and use them to develop a framework that will help improve public confidence in the police services of the Emirates of Abu Dhabi. A holistic theoretical approach was adopted based upon a combination of theories from procedural justice theory with empirical research conducted jointly with the Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters. A conceptual research model was then developed which identified potential causal relationships and co-relationships between latent variables. This led to developing the research hypothesis and suggesting underlying structure of the variables and outlining the underlying theoretical structure of the thesis. By using a combination of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) this research then explored the complex hypothesis that Abu Dhabi residents' public confidence in the police is affected by the interaction of multiple confidence variables. Confidence variables, which, relate to perceptions of police procedural fairness, the level of police engagement with their community and the quality of interactions between police and the public. The research found that public confidence in police in Abu Dhabi results from a subtle combination of police influenced factors and local area perspectives. To improve confidence, the police therefore need to carry out more than just their basic functional roles and further consider the way that those roles, procedures and underlying behaviour to the community are perceived by the public. The stakes are high because a lack of confidence in police and government in general can, through various means, encourage individual loyalties elsewhere, some of which can be harmful, especially where the loyalty is with an extremist group; which highlights the need to improve confidence. Improving confidence is much more than simply increasing police visibility and making the public fearful of crime. What is also important is that a high fear of crime has a negligible influence upon levels of police confidence in the police, which highlight the importance of social cohesion and informal social control at a neighbourhood level. On the one hand, when such cohesion and informal control is perceived not to exist, then the public confidence drops and police are blamed for failing to provide order. On the other hand, when public confidence in the police is increased, a stronger sense of security is created, encouraging more confident and positive relationships between local communities, thus reducing perceptions of disorder and improving informal social control. Ultimately, this confidence reduces the fear of crime, improves social identity and willingness to cooperate with police, and a further improvement in public confidence in the police over time.

The research aims to analyze the link between sustainability and food security, in two study areas - the United Arab Emirates and Sicily - characterized by numerous elements of similarity (from the climatic point of view, in the availability for quality and quantity of water resources; widespread sensitivity in adopting organic or sustainable methods of cultivation, high demographic immigration, of a politicaleconomic and tourist nature, with repercussions in the organization of the socio-cultural, territorial working system, etc.) and of diversity (in average incomes per capita, in the availability of financial resources for investments, etc.). This link has been studied through organic farming which, as we know, is a possible solution for both problems, both in advanced and developing countries. In fact, the food security of any territory is not simply linked to the ability to produce enough food to satisfy domestic demand, but also to the possibility of having access to technology and knowledge to produce it on the territory, to the purchasing power, etc. From this point of view, the literature demonstrates how the success of organic farming is based on five capital goods (natural, social, human, physical and financial capital), producing a variety of positive externalities (in the availability of food through the regeneration of the substance organic land, in contrast to soil erosion and biodiversity protection, in the creation of increasingly large number of local social organizations, new rules and rules for the management of collective natural resources, in the ability and ability of farmers to experiment and solve various problems, in support of marginalized groups or low-level contracts, in the best health and nutrition of children, in price premiums for certified organic products, etc.). For these premises, organic farming makes it possible to implement sustainable food systems, capable of ensuring the food security of a territory and, consequently, the conservation and cultural reproduction of the indigenous knowledge characteristic of the concept of "food sovereignty". The drafting of the text proceeds in coordinated parts. After defining the concept of sustainability in the modern agri-food system, we have analyzed the characteristics of the areas under study, the level of food safety, the state of agriculture and the spread of organic agriculture, according to the most accredited international statistical sources. . We then proceeded to examine the sustainability of the two territorial production systems under study, using the SAFA (Sustainablility Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems) methodology of the FAO and the consequences on local food security and sovereignty. Subsequently, through the use of Social Network Analysis (SNA) methodologies, relationships were studied in the link between production, distribution and consumption with the aim of assessing the ability of companies to communicate sustainability values to potential buyers. Finally, the behavior of a sample of consumers was analyzed with the aim of analyzing behavior and preferences, in the awareness of the role that this actor plays within the agri-food system.

AbstractMarine mammals have always captured the imagination of the people they share their environment with, but few people know that various species populate the waters of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The world’s second largest population of dugongs reside in the Abu Dhabi Emirate, while two species of dolphins (Indian Ocean humpback and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin) and the elusive finless porpoises inhabit Abu Dhabi and Dubai waters. Facing both the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Gulf, the UAE hosts a total of 18 species of marine mammals. These include the biggest animal on Earth, the blue whale, Bryde’s, humpback whales and killer whales, to name a few. However, ecological information about these species is still scarce. With the exponential increase of anthropogenic pressure and effects of climate change on the UAE marine environment, they are facing the risk of disappearing unnoticed. It is imperative to gain a better understanding of their ecology and main threats that affect them to support the implementation of effective conservation measures. Here we review the evolutionary history and adaptation to the water environment of these charismatic group of animals and provide the most up-to-date information on their status in UAE.

AbstractThis chapter discusses the terrestrial vegetation of the United Arab Emirates, and the main units are described in the context of broad habitat types. Despite the huge increase in human activity over the past decades, natural terrestrial habitat types continue to occupy, by far, the larger part of the country. However, they are often severely degraded. The main issues affecting the flora and vegetation are largely the same as in other arid parts of the world, with overgrazing remaining a serious challenge. With regard to tackling these major issues, the various emirates have begun to create a network of protected areas. Effective management plans are required to ensure that they fulfil their role in protecting the natural heritage of the country. If rigorously implemented, the recently introduced ‘grazing law’ in Abu Dhabi emirate could create a useful blueprint for a sustainable grazing regime outside of the protected areas, leading to an enhancement of ecosystem functioning over the longer term.

Abu Dhabi Emirate, United Arab Emirates has a unique tidal system. Understanding the tidal hydrodynamics in Abu Dhabi waters is very important for the design of the hydraulic structures and in the marine environmental studies. The objective of this study is to investigate the tidal water levels and tidal motion in Abu Dhabi, making use of the long-term water levels available. To achieve the aim of the study, the National Energy and Water Research Center (NEWRC) of Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority installed tidal gauges at different locations in Abu Dhabi waters to obtain long-term water level measurements. At present, long-term water level measurements for at least 3 years period are available at different locations in Abu Dhabi waters. Tidal analysis was carried out on the available data to determine the characteristics of the tidal wave in Abu Dhabi Emirate and to get the main tidal constituents affecting the tidal motion. The obtained tidal constituents are used in updating and improving the boundary conditions of the numerical hydrodynamic models simulating the flow pattern in Abu Dhabi waters. The set up of the water level measurement program in Abu Dhabi waters and the results of the tidal analysis are presented and discussed in the paper.

Taweelah Power and Desalination Plant was built in Abu Dhabi Emirate, United Arab Emirates in 1995. The capacity of the plant was increased in 1998. At present, it was decided to carry out the second phase of the capacity extension to satisfy the rapid urban and industrial developments in the emirate. A comprehensive study was carried out to investigate the increased recirculation of salinity and temperature from the plant outfall to the intake due to the proposed extension. The study was carried out using a 3-dimensional numerical flow model simulates the tidal flows and heat transport in the vicinity of the plant. Recirculation of temperature at the plant intake was also obtained from the available long-term seawater temperature measurements at the intake and in the ambient seawater. The resulting recirculation of seawater temperature from the measurements was compared with the model results.

Abstract The Hanifa and Tuwaiq Mountain formations (Upper Jurassic Sila Group) are underexplored units in Abu Dhabi. Although there are several discoveries from the Hanifa Formation, both onshore and offshore, and encouraging indications in the Tuwaiq Mountain Formation, the conventional potential of these formations has not been fully realised. Uncertainties exist between onshore-offshore and west-east correlations, with conflicting stratigraphic terminologies, and the distribution of the Hanifa and Tuwaiq Mountain formations across Abu Dhabi, particularly details of facies distributions and transitions and their impact on the distribution of depositional environments through time. To reduce uncertainties and unlock resources a fully integrated study of the lower Sila Group across Abu Dhabi Emirate has been undertaken. Approximately 150 wells were correlated and integrated with the interpretation of six regional seismic transects (3 W-E and 3 N-S). More detailed interpretation over areas with 3-D seismic coverage helped to improve stratigraphic understanding. Cored wells were used to refine sedimentological interpretationsand extrapolated into uncored wells. Resolution of stratigraphic uncertainties mean that, for the first time, there are consistent lithostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic schemes across Abu Dhabi Emirate that provide a reliable framework for basin modelling and play mapping. Furthermore, integration of all the sub-studies has led to the development of new depositional models and more detailed GDE maps. These are important inputs to basin modelling and the development of revised play maps that clearly highlight the prospective areas in Abu Dhabi. Focus on these prospective areas has led to the recognition of a significant number of structural leads and three new stratigraphic play concepts. These concepts include: a truncation trap geometry to the east,a possible collapse/mass movement trap on the slope, anda possible combined stratigraphic/structural trap where four-way dip closures overlap both the shoal and the slope, with the facies change to muddier slope deposits providing potential down-dip seal.

Abstract In 2017 ADNOC decided to cover the entire Abu Dhabi Emirate, onshore and offshore, with high- resolution and high-fold 3D seismic. Acquisition of the world's largest continuous seismic survey started in late 2018 and is around 77% complete at the time of writing. Data processing is well under way and interpretation of the first delivered 3D cubes is ongoing. Now is an opportune time to review the status of this gigantic project and draw preliminary lessons. Comparison with legacy data shows a massive improvement in deep imaging, which was one of the main objectives of this survey. The basement can clearly be interpreted, while it is hardly visible on legacy data being covered with high energy multiples. A thorough analysis demonstrated that increased offset is the main reason for the uplift. The large fold and the low frequency sweep also help recover signal down to 3 Hz. This extends the bandwidth in the low frequencies by one to two octaves compared to legacy data, which tremendously benefits structural interpretation and stratigraphic inversion.
