Abstract Using shared songs is believed to be an integral part of neighbor communication and territory establishment strategies among many avian species with repertoires. Previous studies of two western subspecies of Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) reported a high level of song sharing among neighboring males, whereas studies of an eastern subspecies have reported a very low level. The purpose of our study was to investigate another population of the eastern subspecies to determine whether higher song-sharing levels existed within its range. Every song in the repertoire of 29 males was compared with the songs of all other males to assess the number of shared songs. For each male, we calculated the mean song-sharing level with neighbors and non-neighbors. Males shared, on average, 33% of their repertoire with neighbors, significantly more than they shared with non-neighbors (27% of their repertoire). Two first-year males learned whole song types from several individuals and preferentially learned the song types shared among those individuals. Our results suggest that the eastern and western subspecies may not differ genetically in the way they learn songs, because song-sharing levels and song learning in our population were more similar to those of the western subspecies than to those of other populations within its own subspecies. Song-sharing differences among eastern populations may be explained instead by factors acting at the level of individual populations. Male courtship songs in Drosophila are exceedingly diverse across species. While much of this variation is understood to have evolved from changes in the central nervous system, evolutionary transitions in the wing muscles that control the song may have also contributed to song diversity. Here, focusing on a group of four wing muscles that are known to influence courtship song in Drosophila melanogaster, we investigate the evolutionary history of wing muscle anatomy of males and females from 19 Drosophila species. We find that three of the wing muscles have evolved sexual dimorphisms in size multiple independent times, whereas one has remained monomorphic in the phylogeny. These data suggest that evolutionary changes in wing muscle anatomy may have contributed to species variation in sexually dimorphic wing-based behaviors, such as courtship song. Moreover, wing muscles appear to differ in their propensity to evolve size dimorphisms, which may reflect variation in the functional constraints acting upon different wing muscles.

The art of pop singing includes not only vocal art but also a complex of expressive means, among which the performer’s acting skills play a prominent role; the extent to which additional expressive means are used depends on the performer’s individuality, the semantic, figurative, emotional and stylistic originality of the song. The purpose of the research is to describe the set of expressive means that a singer can use when creating an artistic image and performing a pop song on stage (vocal art, acting and the singer’s image (stage image), theatricalisation and scenography of a musical piece, the role of accompaniment). Research methodology. Musicological, stylistic, and contextual analysis is applied; a complex of expressive means of a stage performance of a pop song in modern socio-cultural conditions is considered, which is the basis for forming a musician (pop singer) – an artist of a new universal type. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the in-depth consideration of a complex of expressive means in the contemporary stage practices of pop singers, including the acting skills of pop performers, the theatricalisation of vocal pop works, etc., which makes it possible to determine the trend of development of contemporary pop song as a synthesis of acting and vocal art. Conclusions. When a song is sung in the name of a character, the main means of expression of the pop singer’s acting skill is transformation, the creation of the character of the character for whom the song is sung. The theatricalisation of a pop song requires the performer and the director to have a sense of proportion to understand that the meaning and image of the work are revealed primarily through singing; one of the most essential tasks of the director is to help the pop singer find an original and organic image. It is undeniable that the live accompaniment of a song provides an opportunity for a broader theatricalisation in the sense of communication between the singer and the concertmaster or orchestra. In the pyrotechnics of a pop singer’s performance, the leading positions belong to inner vision, imagination and penetration into the emotional and semantic construction of the material.

The religious value of the local wisdom of the Madurese Macapat song is motivated by the variety of Madurese macapat songs that contain religious values which until now have been neglected by the Madurese ethnic in everyday life. This article examines the religious value of local Madurese wisdom in macapat songs. The method in this research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. The techniques used in collecting data are through transcription, observation, documentation, and listening. Meanwhile, to analyze the data, researchers used identification, classification, and data description techniques. The results showed that the religious value of the local wisdom of the Madura macapat song contains the relationship between humans and God the creator of nature, namely Allah commands humans to carry out His good commands and stay away from His prohibitions. Meanwhile, the human-human relationship found symbolic meaning parèbhâsan with a reflection from Paul Recoer namely Kerras lamon ta’ akerrès which is intended for people who do not think before they act so that something happens less profitable for them. Madurese are advised to think before acting, so as not to be careless in doing something to others.

Statistics derived from the Essen Folksong Collection have widely been used as a proxy for general stylistic norms familiar to Western listeners. Since the specific facets of contemporary musical experience best modeled by a corpus of nineteenth-century European folksongs remain ambiguous, this study tests whether Essen-like music might be familiar to North American listeners through common children’s songs. Comparison with a corpus of 38 English-language children’s songs highly popular in North America finds that scale degrees from Essen and the children’s song corpus have near-perfect correlations in frequency profiles as well as high to very high correlations in tonal expectations and 4-grams. Profiles of scale degrees’ downbeat probabilities and average durations have moderate to high correlations for the diatonic but not the total chromatic. Overall, profiles of scale-degree behavior from the children’s song corpus match profiles from Essen more closely than do profiles from another corpus of music widely familiar to contemporary listeners (Billboard Hot 100 songs) and similarly closely as a corpus of nineteenth-century common-practice German vocal music (Schubert songs). For contemporary North American listeners, studies relying on Essen might plausibly be reinterpreted in terms of Essen acting as a corpus of early musical experience although the generalizability of Essen-derived statistics likely depends on the precise statistics being measured.

This study examines the illocutionary acts present in the lyrics of the album "This Is Acting" by Sia Furler. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study categorizes and analyzes the various types of illocutionary acts found within the album's songs. The data collection process involves selecting song lyrics from the album and identifying instances of illocutionary acts, which are then classified into representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative categories. The findings reveal that the representative type of illocutionary act is the most prevalent, with instances of describing situations, stating facts, and conveying truths forming a significant portion of the analyzed data. Following this, directive illocutionary acts, including commands and invitations, are also prominent within the lyrical content. Commissive acts, expressing hopes, rejections, threats, and offers, represent a smaller yet significant portion of the data. Additionally, the analysis identifies expressive acts, such as expressions of praise, thanks, and regret, as well as declarative acts, featuring expressions of confession. This research contributes to the understanding of linguistic expressions in song lyrics and sheds light on how illocutionary acts are employed to convey messages, emotions, and themes within the context of music. Furthermore, it suggests avenues for future research, including exploring alternative media forms and applying the analysis of speech acts to literary works. Overall, this study offers valuable insights into the intricate interplay between language and music in conveying meaning and emotion to listeners.

Acting as song is a new philosophical approach to music theatre training enabling student actors to integrate singing and acting offering holistic, embodied acting-singing methods. Acting as song demands we abandon thinking that singing and acting are mutually exclusive, and that a character cannot be true-to-life because they are singing. Rather, singing is considered acting. Through practice based research, I show that acting as song results in more holistic, authentic, believable characterisation. It requires that acting and singing be integrated in multiple ways, that dramaturgical music analysis is made accessible to all students and embodied learning is used across educational contexts.

Virginia Commonwealth University, 2009 Major Director: David S. Leong Chairman, Department of Theatre Musical Theatre is a performance style deeply woven into the fabric of the American theatre. We live in time and social climate where over half of the productions open on Broadway right now are musicals. If actor training institutions profess a mission to prepare their students for a career in the entertainment industry, why are so many components of an actor’s skill set left to the side and considered peripheral? One can make the argument that their actor training program is exclusively for the theatre, and even more specifically for straight plays for the theatre. Of course, what your career preparation institution chooses to target is your prerogative and as long as that is clear to the incoming students who wish to specialize only in that one faction of the artist’s opportunities for work then my argument is moot. However, if you believe that actor training has a duty to prepare actors to work in an ever changing and transforming field and to be competitive in meeting the demands of various media, among many other areas of focus you should consider preparing your students to develop their craft for musical theatre as legitimately as you would for a classical or contemporary straight play. In this thesis I propose an approach to creating a role for musical theatre using as an example my character development technique for the role of Sally Bowles from a recent production of Cabaret. My desire is to illustrate a seamless continuation of the actor’s craft to meet the additional requirements of skills necessary to perform in a musical. Rather than signifying a separate style of acting for musical theatre which is identified as being altogether different and often dismissed as inferior to the craft of acting in a straight play, I hope to challenge the reader to consider a new perspective in which the foundation of musical theatre performance is built on the fundamentals of acting in a straight play.

Son mariage, en 1327, avec Béatrix de Clermont l'introduit dans la famille royale. Ferme soutien de la couronne, il participe aux opérations de la guerre franco-anglaise dès son origine. This research examines the position of the Stuart & Sons piano in the three hundred year evolution of piano design. It demonstrates how the Stuart piano design is indicative of the technology of its period, the music of its period, and the place of its development. This thesis argues that the Stuart & Sons piano design implementations of the bridge agraffe and the expansion of its frequency ranges demonstrate that the new Australian instrument is of its time and place. Its use of 21st century technological advancements in steel wire drawing and its production of a distinctively new sound aesthetic which appeals to Australian contemporary music composition are indicative of a piano design of this period. The experimental ideas of the 19th century piano designers Henri Pape, John Broadwood and Sebastian Erard have been taken up by Stuart to expand the piano’s frequency range to the widest in the history of the piano, from 16Hz to 5587.65 Hz with a proposed extension of 6 higher notes to 7901.72 Hz. This proposed extension achieves a 108 note keyboard compass and eight full octaves for each pitch of the chromatic scale. The thesis examines Wayne Stuart’s claims that today’s modern piano design, standardized in the late 19th century, represents a pause in the evolution of piano design that has not adapted to the changes in musical style and technology of the 20th century, whereas the Stuart design supports the vertical emphasis in sound production implemented by the impressionist, contemporary & electronic music composers of the 20th century. This research compares the sound of the modern piano with the Stuart piano sound to demonstrate the differences of the Stuart’s vertically enhanced harmonic characteristics and its increased capacity to project a comprehensive tonal spectrum over a longer distance. How audiences decipher the differences found by this research, in the sounds of the Stuart and modern pianos is tested in a series of audience-survey concerts. Verbal attributes used to describe piano sound quality are complied into glossaries and used in survey questions. Australian aspects of the Stuart piano are described and associated with the oblique connection that exits between contemporary Australian music composition and Australian Aboriginal art forms. Compositions for the Stuart piano are devised from perceptions of the Stuart piano sound established by this research. The compositions reflect social aspects of Australian society and enable a musical activity and response to the urgent need for cross-cultural collaborations in the arts-education sector between Indigenous and non-Indigenous systems of education.

La transmission acoustique au travers d'une cloison double est particulierement accentuee autour de sa frequence masse-ressort-masse du fait d'un fort couplage par la lame d'air. Une forte amelioration de l'isolement peut etre obtenue par l'adjonction a l'interieur de la double paroi d'un systeme de controle actif s'opposant a ce phenomene de resonance. Toute la conception du systeme actif a ete realisee a l'aide d'un logiciel de calcul de la transmission acoustique, base sur une approche modale. Les etapes successives de ce travail sont: la recherche d'une fonction cout interne a la structure: la minimisation du mode de volume (0,0,0) de la cavite aboutit a une reduction des niveaux de pression en tous points du volume reception, independamment de ce volume ; la simulation du systeme actif, comprenant la recherche du nombre et des positions des capteurs de controle et des actuateurs permettant une bonne minimisation du mode de volume sans exciter les modes d'ordre superieur de la cavite ; la determination de l'influence sur l'efficacite du systeme actif des caracteristiques mecaniques des plaques, des dimensions, des effets de l'absorption acoustique, de materiau poreux ou de gaz remplissant la cavite. Les essais sont menes sur une double paroi de plexiglass de 2 m#2, en utilisant un filtre adaptatif lms monovoie. Dans des conditions de laboratoire (bonne coherence entre les signaux d'erreur et de reference), les experiences sont realisees avec un bruit primaire large bande. Les resultats sont conformes aux previsions, l'indice d'affaiblissement de la cloison etant ameliore sur plus d'une octave autour de la frequence de resonance de la cloison, sans trop perturber son isolement passif au-dela

Gaelic women’s poetry and song track the reception of Reformed theology in Gaelic communities both geographically and diachronically. They also allow insights into the spiritual, ethical, and societal concerns of those whose voices are otherwise unheard. Whether ostensibly secular or explicitly spiritual, Gaelic women’s songs carry a record of the religious, cultural, and domestic life of Highland Scotland in many individual voices. The earliest Gaelic evangelical songs belonged to the oral tradition, and were specifically directed towards making biblical teaching and Reformed doctrine accessible within non-literate Gaelic-speaking communities. Women’s spiritual songs quickly became a forum for personal and communal religious expression, public exhortation, and discussions on faith and doctrine. They show women, both literate and non-literate, acting as spiritual mentors, actively engaging in biblical exegesis, relating scriptural teaching to contemporary issues, and demanding that Christian ethics be applied in both personal and public life.

This chapter traces the decentralization of prestige associated with the state-commissioned pharmacopeia up until the end of the sixteenth century. It argues that the decentralization of authority had already been well under way since the eleventh century, when the Northern Song court did commission multiple bencao pharmacopeias. Proceeding chronologically, three trends stand out in this examination of bencao as a field of inquiry. First, the Song state could not exert much control over these elaborate texts in transmission. A variety of authors, acting independently of the imperial court, made changes to the official edition and promoted their work through the manuscript or the newly available technology of printing. Second, major medical innovations during the Jin-Yuan period inspired physicians to explain pharmacological action in cosmic, systematic terms. Lastly, regional official publishing—a hallmark of Ming book culture—made the elaborate Song pharmacopeia widely available in print from the mid-fifteenth century. As a result, an unprecedented number of texts emerged that attempted to integrate cosmic pharmacology with the pharmacopeia, creating new discourses and textual genres.

Migratory seabirds are an unseen conduit between marine and terrestrial systems, carrying the nutrients they consume at sea into the forests where they breed. Acting as environmental sentinels, their health and reproductive success provide early warning signals of deteriorating marine eco-systems as the climate changes, and fish stocks decrease. Aotearoa New Zealand is the seabird capital of the world, with ~25% of all species breeding here and ~10% exclusively so. They play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, with their long-term well-being is closely interconnected with our own prospects for a sustainable future. Now predominantly restricted to off-shore islands due to predation and habitat destruction, seabirds and their familiar sounds have become less available in an age when the unprecedented global movement and planetary spread of the human population has culminated in unsustainable fishing, predators and habitat destruction. Inspiring mythology, song, poetry and stories, birds have been significant in shaping our understanding of how our natural environment has come to be known and understood. This paper speculates upon how we learn to communicate and cooperate with these precious taonga, and what might be learned from such an exchange through creative practice. Reflecting upon what birds might tell us, musician Matthew Bannister and I, a visual artist, have taken our cue from seabirds sharing our local environment on the west coast of Aotearoa - from the petrel (peera) through to the gannet (tākapu). Working on the premise that bird vocalisation is a performed negotiation that includes defence of territory and mate attraction, a bird’s call is a form of communication that effectively says “Come here” or “Go away”, which arguably is true of music – marking a social space and time to invite or repel. Rather than limiting bird calls to functionalist categories of explanation, we ask whether seabirds can communicate and exchange information about environmental changes using a malleable vocabulary, comprised of unique acoustic units arranged and re-arranged sequentially for greater communicative depth. Granting a high level of agency and creativity to birds as opposed to believing a bird only avails itself of stereotyped ‘speech’ to survive an accident-rich environment, places greater importance on responses that are improvised directly upon environmental stimuli as irritant rather than as a signal. Matthew explores bird calls via musique concrète, sampling recordings of seabirds to abstract the musical values of bird song conventions – a human response to the ‘other’ in jointly formed compositions, reflecting a living evolving relationship between composer and bird. In further developing our research into a multimedia artwork, I shall extend a technique used for electroacoustic composition (granular synthesis) to video portraits of composer/performer and bird. In applying granular synthesis techniques to video, tiny units of image and sampled sound are reassembled within the frames. Through the mixing of existing synthesised sequences, performer/composer and bird become active participants in the making and remaking of a shared environment, articulating the limits of space/territory to find new ways to be heard within it.

Soundscape ecologists aim to study the acoustic characteristics of an area that reflects natural processes [Schafer, 1977]. These sounds can be interpreted as biological (biophony), geophysical (geophony), and human-produced (anthrophony) [Pijanowski et al., 2011]. A common task is to use sounds to identify species based on the frequency content of a given signal. This signal can be further converted into spectrograms enabling other types of analysis to automate the identification of species. Based on the promising results of deep learning methods, such as Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) in image classification, here we propose the use of a pre-trained VGG16 CNN architecture to identify two nocturnal avian species, namely Antrostomus rufus and Megascops choliba, commonly encountered in Brazilian forests. Monitoring the abundance of these species is important to ecologists to develop conservation programmes, detect environmental disturbances and assess the impact of human action. Specialists recorded sounds in 16-bit wave files at a sampling rate of 44Hz and classified the presence of these species. With the classified wave files, we created additional classes to visualise the performance of the VGG16 CNN architecture for detecting both species. We end up with six categories containing 60 seconds of audio of species vocalisation combinations and background only sounds. We produced spectrograms using the information from each RGB channel, only one channel (grey-scale), and applied the histogram equalisation technique to the grey-scale images. A comparison of the system performance using histogram equalised images and unmodified images was made. Histogram equalisation improves the contrast, and so the visibility to the human observer. Investigating the effect of histogram equalisation on the performance of the CNN was a feature of this study. Moreover, to show the practical application of our work, we created 51 minutes of audio, which contains more noise than the presence of both species (a scenario commonly encountered in field surveys). Our results showed that the trained VGG16 CNN produced, after 8000 epochs, a training accuracy of 100% for the three approaches. The test accuracy was 80.64%, 75.26%, and 67.74% for the RGB, grey-scaled, and histogram equalised approaches. The method’s accuracy on the synthetic audio file of 51 minutes was 92.15%. This accuracy level reveals the potential of CNN architectures in automating species detection and identification by sound using passive monitoring. Our results suggest that using coloured images to represent the spectrogram better generalises the classification than grey-scale and histogram equalised images. This study might develop future avian monitoring programmes based on passive sound recording, which significantly enhances sampling size without increasing cost.

Es bien sabido que un estilo de vida físicamente activo conlleva muchos beneficios a la salud, entre ellos un mejor desempeño cardiovascular y una mejor oxigenación de la sangre. El objetivo del estudio es analizar la actividad neuronal del lóbulo frontal durante una prueba lógico-matemática, en estudiantes con un estilo de vida sedentario, contra aquellos que tienen una vida físicamente activa. Esto con el fin de corroborar las ventajas de un estilo de vida físicamente activo, no solo a nivel corporal, sino también a nivel metal, específicamente en las funciones ejecutivas tales como memoria, planificación, razonamiento y toma de decisiones. Para el estudio, se reclutaron a 14 jóvenes adultos masculinos de entre 21 y 29 años, a quienes se les midió su actividad electroencefalográfica (EEG) prefrontal (AF7 y AF8) en estado de reposo y durante la prueba lógico-matemática. El análisis de las señales de EEG se basó en la cuantificación de la potencia promedio absoluta en las bandas alfa y beta, las cuales además fueron estimadas individualmente acorde al ritmo cardiaco del voluntario. Los resultados sugieren que en el grupo activo/moderado pudo haber tenido mayor conciencia de su entorno en estado de reposo, y mostró un mejor desempeño en la prueba lógico-matemática, que el grupo sedentario.

This interdisciplinaray work combines expertise in engineering and entomology in Israel and the US, to develop an acoustic trap for mate-seeking female medflies. Medflies are among the world's most economically harmful pests, and monitoring and control efforts cost about $800 million each year in Israel and the US. Efficient traps are vitally important tools for medfly quarantine and pest management activities; they are needed for early detection, for predicting dispersal patterns and for estimating medfly abundance within infested regions. Early detection facilitates rapid response to invasions, in order to contain them. Prediction of dispersal patterns facilitates preemptive action, and estimates of the pests' abundance lead to quantification of medfly infestations and control efforts. Although olfactory attractants and traps exist for capturing male and mated female medflies, there are still no satisfactorily efficient means to attract and trap virgin and remating females (a significant and dangerous segment of the population). We proposed to explore the largely ignored mechanism of female attraction to male song that the flies use in courtship. The potential of such an approach is indicated by studies under this project. Our research involved the identification, isolation, and augmentation of the most attractive components of male medfly songs and the use of these components in the design and testing of traps incorporating acoustic lures. The project combined expertise in acoustic engineering and instrumentation, fruit fly behavior, and integrated pest management. The BARD support was provided for 1 year to enable proof-of-concept studies, aimed to determine: 1) whether mate-seeking female medflies are attracted to male songs; and 2) over what distance such attraction works. Male medfly calling song was recorded during courtship. Multiple acoustic components of male song were examined and tested for synergism with substrate vibrations produced by various surfaces, plates and loudspeakers, with natural and artificial sound playbacks. A speaker-funnel system was developed that focused the playback signal to reproduce as closely as possible the near-field spatial characteristics of the sounds produced by individual males. In initial studies, the system was tasted by observing the behavior of females while the speaker system played songs at various intensities. Through morning and early afternoon periods of peak sexual activity, virgin female medflies landed on a sheet of filter paper at the funnel outlet and stayed longer during broadcasting than during the silent part of the cycle. In later studies, females were captured on sticky paper at the funnel outlet. The mean capture rates were 67 and 44%, respectively, during sound emission and silent control periods. The findings confirmed that female trapping was improved if a male calling song was played. The second stage of the research focused on estimating the trapping range. Initial results indicated that the range possibly extended to 70 cm, but additional, verification tests remain to be conducted. Further studies are planned also to consider effects of combining acoustic and pheromonal cues.

This study examines Mozambican popular music to investigate three questions: Are notions of empowerment and accountability present in popular music in Mozambique? If so, what can these existing notions of empowerment and accountability reveal about relations between citizens and state institutions in general and about citizen-led social and political action in particular? In what ways is popular music used to support citizen mobilisation in Mozambique? The discussion is based on an analysis of 46 protest songs, interviews with musicians, music producers and event promoters as well as field interviews and observations among audiences at selected popular music concerts and public workshops in Maputo city. Secondary data were drawn from radio broadcasts, digital media, and social networks. The songs analysed were widely played in the past two decades (1998–2018), a period in which three different presidents led the country. Our focus is on the protest song, conceived as those musical products that are concerned with public affairs, particularly public policy and how it affects citizens’ social, political and economic life, and the relationship between citizens and the state.

L’impact de la révolution numérique sur le monde de l’éducation universitaire peut se résumer à ceci : dans un monde numérique, les connaissances sont accessibles à tous et, somme toute à très faibles coûts alors que le niveau et les types de compétences requises pour évoluer dans un monde numérique sont plus complexes. L’université a perdu son quasi-monopole dans la transmission des connaissances et elle n’a pas encore établi pleinement son rôle, pourtant indispensable, dans l’acquisition des nouvelles compétences. L’université est également menacée dans sa capacité historique d’attirer, de retenir et de promouvoir les artisans du monde de demain qui sont de plus en plus actifs dans les écosystèmes animés et même souvent contrôlés par les grands gagnants industriels de la révolution numérique. Une réflexion et une discussion s’imposent. Le monde numérique étant un monde de données, d’information et de savoir, ce monde ne peut être que le monde naturel de la communauté des professeurs, des maîtres, des chercheurs et des étudiants. La numérisation de l’éducation est une chance unique pour le rendre plus accessible au plus grand nombre.

Au Canada, les grands-parents forment un groupe très diversifié et plusieurs participent activement au bien-être de la famille et à son fonctionnement, notamment dans leurs rôles de mentors, d’éducateurs, d’aidants, de gardiens d’enfants, d’historiens, de guides spirituels et de « dépositaires de la mémoire familiale ». Certes, la population du Canada est vieillissante et l’espérance de vie continue de s’allonger, c’est pourquoi il faut s’attendre à voir les grands-parents de plus en plus présents dans le quotidien de nombreuses familles au cours des prochaines années. Au Canada, le nombre d’aînés au sein de la population active ne cesse d’augmenter, et ceux-ci jouent un rôle de plus en plus senti sur le marché du travail. Cependant, ce virage entraîne aussi des répercussions pour les familles qui comptent sur les grands-parents pour s’occuper des petits-enfants ou d’autres membres de la famille. Par ailleurs, le cadre de vie des grands-parents continue de se transformer, à l’heure où ceux-ci sont de plus en plus nombreux à cohabiter avec les générations plus jeunes tout en contribuant aux ménages des familles. Les données récemment publiées dans le cadre de l’Enquête sociale générale de 2017 nous ont permis de mettre à jour l’une de nos ressources les plus consultées, soit la publication Coup d’œil sur les grands-parents au Canada, qui propose un portrait statistique des grands-parents, de leurs relations familiales et de certaines des tendances socioéconomiques qui sont au cœur de cette évolution.

Le boisement est le processus qui consiste à établir des forêts sur des terres anciennement non boisées. Le suivi des terres boisées est essentiel pour comprendre les processus liés au développement durable, atténuer l'impact des émissions de gaz à effet de serre sur le climat, caractériser les services écosystémiques et planifier les actions politiques. Il est difficile de surveiller ce processus en raison des coûts associés, de la disponibilité limitée des études in situ et de l'absence fréquente d'études systématiques in situ au cours de la période d'établissement. Les indices spectraux de végétation, tels que l'indice de végétation par différence normalisée (NDVI), l'indice de végétation amélioré (EVI) et l'indice de différence normalisée de l'eau (NDWI), etc., sont largement utilisés comme indicateurs de la repousse de la canopée pendant le boisement, car ces indices sont localement proportionnels aux variables biophysiques de la canopée, telles que le couvert végétal (fCOVER), l'indice de surface foliaire (LAI), la fraction du rayonnement photosynthétiquement actif absorbé (fAPAR), etc. Mais elles présentent des limites, comme l'impact des différences entre les capteurs, le bruit dû aux effets atmosphériques non corrigés, la relation non linéaire avec les propriétés physiques de la canopée, etc. Les variables biophysiques telles que fAPAR, fCOVER et LAI deviennent des alternatives pour surveiller l'état du boisement car elles sont indépendantes des capteurs, traçables aux mesures de référence in-situ, etc. Une mise à jour du prototype de processeur simplifié de niveau 2 (SL2P), SL2P-CCRS, est utilisée dans cette étude avec des données Landsat 8/9 et Sentinel 2. L'objectif de cette étude était d'extraire les données de réflectance de surface Landsat 8/9 et Sentinel 2, dérivées des estimations fCOVER, fAPAR et LAI à l'aide de SL2P-CCRS sur 4 905 sites de boisement dans le sud de l'Ontario, au Canada, et de comparer les variables dérivées avec le NDVI, largement utilisé.
