In eight samples of organic and organomineral surface horizons we studied the stability of soil organic matter in aerobic and anaerobic conditions expressed by the rate constant of its biochemical oxidation, total biochemical oxygen demand, substrate production of methane and degradability in anaerobic conditions. In the eight very different samples no relationship was found between aerobic and anaerobic stability of their organic matter; nor was the expected relationship between total biochemical oxygen demand and “active carbon” Chws proved. Methods of determination are described.

Sharp wave/ripple (SWR, 150–250 Hz) hippocampal events have long been postulated to be involved in memory consolidation. However, more recent work has investigated SWRs that occur during active waking behaviour: findings that suggest that SWRs may also play a role in cell assembly strengthening or spatial working memory. Do such theories of SWR function apply to animal learning? This review discusses how general theories linking SWRs to memory-related function may explain circuit mechanisms related to rodent spatial learning and to the associated stabilization of new cognitive maps.

The anion-exchange resin (AER) method for the estimation of bioavailable phosphorus was slightly optimised for soils with high contents of readily soluble organic compounds as well as for those having very dif­ferent clay and sand contents. The method based on a strong base anion exchanger, the active group of trimethyl benzyl ammonium, the field moist soil, and the enclosure of resin beds in a bag was very different soils under relatively uniform outer conditions where the determination of the absorbance of (blue) phosphate-molybdate complex at 870 nm is used. The motivation of the proposed method comes from distinctive features of forest soils where marked differences are commonly encountered between clay/silt/sand contents, pH-values, and the contents of organic substances. A modestly new methodology was applied for the evaluation of seasonal phosphorus dynamics in a forest environment. The recommended rapid assay for available phosphorus was statistically compared with other procedures. Considerable seasonal effects on the bioavailable P contents were demonstrated.

Areas of shifting sand are important places for testing the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on soil morphology and evolution, where aeolian processes cause dynamic changes in the natural environment. The main aim of the study was to determine the evolution of soils within deflation hollows in shifting sands. In the context of this purpose, representative study areas were selected: (1) a reference surface in a plantation forest with soils undisturbed by aeolian processes – one pedon, (2) an active deflation hollow – two pedons, (3) a deflation hollow stabilized by reforestation (forest planting ca. 30 and ca. 100 years ago – two pedons). Soil morphology and micromorphology as well as several physical and chemical properties were analyzed. In a deflation hollow, the studied soils are found at various stages of development, mostly characterized by a relatively rapid accumulation of soil organic matter. A well-developed buried illuvial B horizon as an ‘ortstein’ material can limit aeolian erosion to a certain depth, while above these horizons aeolian erosion and accumulation remain active. History of changes in the environment is to a substantial degree reflected in morphology and micromorphology of the studied soils.

Background/Aim. Exertional heat stress is a common problem in military services. The aim of this study was to examine changes in body water and serum concentrations of some electrolites in soldiers during exertional heat stress (EHST), as well as effects of 10-day passive or active acclimation in a climatic chamber. Methods. Forty male soldiers with high aerobic capacity, performed EHST either in cool (20 ?C, 16 ?C WBGT-wet bulb globe temperature), or hot (40 ?C, 25 ?C WBGT) environment, unacclimatized, or after 10 days of passive or active acclimation. The subjects were allowed to drink tap water ad libitum during EHST. Mean skin (Tsk) and tympanic (Tty) temperatures and heart rates (HR) measured physiological strain, while sweat rate (SwR), and serum concentrations of sodium, potassium and osmolality measured changes in water and electrolyte status. Blood samples were collected before and immediately after the EHST. Results. Exertional heat stress in hot conditions induced physiological heat stress (increase in Tty, HR, and SwR), with significant decrease in serum sodium concentration (140.6?1.52 before vs 138.5?1.0 mmol/l after EHST, p < 0.01) and osmolality (280.7?3.8 vs 277.5?2.6 mOsm/kg, p < 0.05) in the unacclimatized group. The acclimated soldiers suffered no such effects of exertional heat stress, despite almost the same degree of heat strain, measured by Tty, HR and SwR. Conclusion. In the trained soldiers, 10-day passive or active acclimation in a climatic chamber can prevent disturbances in water and electrolytic balance, i.e. decrease in serum sodium concentrations and osmolality induced by exertional heat stress.

SummaryA high frequency of proviral acquisition has previously been reported in the offspring of SWR/J–RF/J hybrid mice. In the present study, it was investigated whether this proviral acquisition would be useful for large-scale insertional mutagenesis studies. A population of SWR/J–RF/J hybrid mice with a predominantly SWR/J background was created. Lines of mice with such a background and partially congenic for two active proviruses from the RF/J strain were generated (the insert lines). Control lines were derived from mice which had no proviral loci but had an otherwise similar genetic background. DNA samples of mice in the insert lines were screened for the appearance of new proviral loci by Southern hybridization. The rate of proviral acquisition, calculated from the observed number of new proviral loci was 0·023 new proviruses per mouse. This rate is lower than found in previous studies and too low for large-scale insertional mutagenesis studies. A sensitivity experiment indicated that there was adequate detection of new proviral loci.The number of segregating proviruses was consistent with the number of newly acquired proviruses actually detected. Two additional crosses between mice in the insert lines and SWR/J mice were performed. The rate of proviral acquisition was greatly increased when SWR/J females were initially mated to insert mice, but remained unchanged when SWR/J males were used. This suggested that mice in the insert lines had acquired a maternally transmitted factor, which was suppressing viral expression and thus reducing the rate of proviral acquisition.

We quantified the soluble fractions of the soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations and the total and water-soluble trace elements in soils contaminated by household waste and remediated via the addition of green manure over 13 years and identified the main factors controlling the vertical distribution and accumulation of the trace elements. Green manure favoured the active formation of soil organic matter. The SOC of the examined soils was characterised by the active stabilisation by mineral soil compounds, but by a low degree of humification. The soils showed increased concentrations of Cr and Ni ions. The SOC and different soil compounds enriched by Si, Ca, and Mn ions were the important determinant for the distribution of Sr, V and Cu ions, as well as for the distribution of Pb and Cr ions bound to the water-soluble components of the soils. The low degree of SOC humification may be one of the main reasons of the high concentrations of Cu and Pb ions in the composition of the water-soluble soil compounds. The nickel ions were mainly associated with compounds enriched by the Al and Fe ions. The extremely high percentage concentration of the Ni ions in the water-soluble components of the soils may be result of the absence of the Ni ions adsorption by humic substances.

The trends of carbon sequestration behaviour have been estimated for the most fertile soil type of Slovakia based on the prognosticated regional climate change scenario. The processes were modelled and simulated by CENTURY 5 model to provide these inputs: predicted information about quantification of carbon and nitrogen fluxes, and primary net of organic matter production. Soil conditions were represented by the soil type calcareous Haplic Chernozem (Danubian lowland), and the climatic scenario was related to the meteorological station Hurbanovo modelled for the period of 2005&minus;2090. The dynamics of soil carbon and nitrogen was assessed using a conventional cropping system, concretely for 5-years crop rotation winter wheat-maize-oats (feed)-alfalfa-alfalfa modified into two alternatives: with fertilisation and without irrigation (ALT1), and excluding fertilisation and irrigation (ALT2). The model CENTURY 5 provides the simulation of three soil organic matter pools: the active (labile) pool (C<sub>L</sub>), the slow (sequestration) pool (C<sub>S</sub>), and the passive (resistant) pool (C<sub>P</sub>). The results of the model simulation for the conventional crop rotation predict that the supplies of active and slow SOM pools (C<sub>L</sub>, C<sub>S</sub>) do not show any statistically significant decreasing tendency in relation to the expected climate scenario. A moderately linear decreasing trend is expected with the passive SOM pool (C<sub>P</sub>), however, this decreasing tendency is not recognised during total carbon running (C<sub>TOT</sub>). I.e., in the future conventional crop-rotation farming no significant climate change impacts on total carbon sequestration will be presumed. In the case of ALT1, the model shows a gradual but very moderate decrease mainly with CS pool, and in that of ALT2 a significant decreasing trend is recognised with all SOM pools, mainly with CS pool. Amazing is the finding that in the case of non-irrigated but fertilised cropping system (in dry weather), the anticipated significant decrease in carbon sequestration was not observed, however, more drastic changes can be predicted in the non-fertilised and non-irrigated alternative. The average aboveground live carbon and belowground live carbon in both alternative cropping systems in relation to the conventional one have been compared. It was, estimated: in ATL1, that the primary net of organic matter decreased by almost 38% (aboveground live C) and by 43% (belowground live C), and in ALT2 by 43% (aboveground live C) and 45% (belowground live C), respectively. All these findings can be considered as the modelling outputs at the given input data, not as a firmly confirmed prognosis. Nevertheless, the achieved results of CENTURY 5 modelling assume that in the case of sufficient fertilisation and irrigation with well-managed cropping rotation practice under fertile soil conditions of Slovakia, no serious changes in carbon supplies in all SOM pools can be expected.

To study the effects of straw return and aeration of the water layer on oxygen and redox status in the water column and at different depths in paddy field soil, a short-term incubation experiment was conducted with four treatments: (1) no straw return (NS); (2) straw return without aeration (S); (3) straw return and 30 minutes of aeration per day (SO30); and (4) straw return and 90 minutes of aeration per day (SO90). Compared to NS, S decreased dissolved oxygen (DO) and redox potential (ORP) by 23–58% and 47–53 mV, respectively, and increased active reducing substance (ARS) by 21–46% in the water and soil layers. The aeration treatments increased DO and ORP by 25–120% and 11–86 mV, respectively, and reduced ARS by 5–16% compared to S. The results indicated that straw return to paddy fields exacerbated hypoxia and reducing conditions in the soil. SO90 achieved better effects than SO30 in alleviating the negative impact of straw return by supplying more oxygen, but the effects weakened over time and with soil depth.

Improving the quality of reclaimed soils requires an active population of microorganisms which can promote plant growth. Increasing the activity of microorganisms can be done by adding nutrients, making agrotechnical soil improvements and by the inoculation of beneficial microorganisms. We investigated the role of fertilizer treatments on plant growth and nitrogen fixation in a pot experiment conducted under green house conditions. Influence of the fertilizer type on numbers of bacteria was also investigated. The seeds were inoculated with the mixture of Azotobacter spp. and Rhizobium spp. The pot experiment was set up with the substrate from the mine spoil (North Bohemia coal basin, the Czech Republic) using Medicago sativa as test plants. The following treatments were used: compost 0, 20, 40, 120, 400, 800 t/ha and mineral fertilizer &ndash; ammonium sulphate. The doses of ammonium sulphate were calculated to be equivalent (in nitrogen content) to those doses of compost. Control variants without bacteria inoculation and fertilizers were also included. Inoculation with the mixture of AzotobacterRhizobium spp. significantly increased plant growth and nitrogenase activity. The nitrogenase activity was inhibited by mineral fertilizers in all doses used. The results of the study have proved that compost application stimulated the growth of Azotobacter spp. and Rhizobium spp.

Land use changes have a significant impact on soil properties and in some cases they are considered to be among the main threats to soil quality. The present study focuses on the relationship between soil chemistry and land use in a karstic region in Romania, where forests were converted to agricultural land 190 years ago by Czech settlers in the Banat Region. Out of several villages founded by the Czech settlers the study was done around the village of Sfinta Elena. The uniqueness of this study is that traditional agricultural practices using low intensity farming (fallow period, organic fertilizers) have been used continuously since the village was founded. Nowadays the landscape is a mosaic of different land uses. Sixty soil samples from 6 land uses, analysed for pH (active and exchangeable), total cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation, amount of Ca<sup>2+</sup>, Mg<sup>2+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>, accessible P, total N, and soil organic carbon, showed very low concentrations of analysed elements and very low values of CEC and base saturation in soils. Current arable land use exhibited the lowest values especially of soil organic C. Surprisingly, forest soils differed significantly from agricultural soils only in C/N ratio and soil organic C concentration.

North Bohemia belongs to one of the most heavily industrialized and polluted regions in Europe. The enormous acid deposition which culminated in the 1970s has largely contributed to the accelerated acidification process in the soils and consequently to the wide forest decline in North Bohemian mountains. In this paper we map the active topsoil pH and humus quality with ordinary, universal, and regression kriging and compare the accuracy of resulting maps with cross-validation. For the regression kriging we use two types of spatially exhaustive auxiliary information, first the altitude derived from digital elevation model and second the land cover classes derived from satellite imagery. The leave-one-out (cross-validation) statistics, i.e. mean error, root mean squared error, and mean squared deviation ratio, are taken for comparison since they are widely accepted as measurements of the accuracy of digital soil maps. The results show that the regression kriging is superior over other kriging methods in this case. Out of 97 sampling sites the regression kriging with land cover classes is the best predictor at 32 sites for pH and at 30 sites for humus quality, the regression kriging with altitude at 31 and 25 sites, the universal kriging at 21 and 23 sites, and the ordinary kriging at 13 and 18 sites. The highest number of best predictions for regression kriging implies that the topsoil pH and humus quality are driven approximately equally by land cover and altitude and little less by pure geographic position. Furthermore, the universal kriging maps show a northeast to southwest spatial trend of topsoil pH and a northwest to southeast spatial trend for humus quality.

Activated carbon is a highly porous form of carbon, which has an exceptionally large surface area. Activated carbon material has been artificially processed as a set of plates, within which two different types of pores are present: micropores (&lt; 2 nm) and transport pores (macropores &gt; 50 nm and mesopores 2&ndash;50 nm). The transport pores bring molecules of different substances (organic compounds) into the micropores, which are basically the active centres where the adsorption takes place. Activated carbon, due to its high adsorption potential, is used in many applications such as air, water, wastewater or chemical purification. In this study, the pelletized activated carbon (Silcarbon SC40) was tested for water and non-volatile LNAPL (Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid; medicinal mineral oil used in this study) determination in a porous medium (silica sand). The experiments were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions. Three different sets of experiments were carried out: (i) the water or LNAPL adsorption from pure media (water or LNAPL liquids); (ii) the water or LNAPL adsorption from pure media (water or LNAPL vapours); (iii) water and/or LNAPL adsorption from the porous material at different sampling intervals. Furthermore, the water/LNAPL contents of the porous media were determined on the basis of the water/LNAPL contents of sampled Silcarbon SC40. The results confirmed the suitability of the Silcarbon SC40 for water/LNAPL sampling from the porous media under laboratory conditions. The method is suitable for detection of water and/or LNAPL in a liquid or gaseous phase and also for water and/or LNAPL quantitative determination. For the quantitative determination a calibration of this method would be required.

Анотація:
The assessment study of the global ecological impact tries to highlight the main factors and negative ecological determinants, due to a lack or excess, and it also focuses on highlighting the main negative ecological effects with the aim to rehabilitate and restore the ecological balance within degraded ecosystems. The methodology used in the assessment process was based on graphs, tables in the shape of Leopold matrix, considerably improved by authors. In order to assess qualitatively the negative ecological effects, a reliability scale with 3 indicators and 3 graduations was used, designed to underline the importance of the impact (minor, medium, and major), the quality of the impact (neutral, negative, and positive) and the certainty of the appearance of a negative impact (improbable, probable, and certain). Our research was accomplished in the pasture ecosystem degraded by pluvial erosion from the Tutova Hills, located in the Eastern part of Romania. This ecosystem is characterized through active geo-morphological processes in the depth and on the surface and it drew attention to the presence of 8 negative ecological factors grouped in 3 main categories: geo-climatic, pedological, and anthropogenic. 8 main negative effects were identified and quantified by means of 3 qualitative indicators with 3 graduation scales. The analysis of the current state of the effects of the complex ecological impact upon the degraded ecosystem ask for a series of urgent measures elaborated by scientists, researchers, and representatives of the local administration system. The aim of these measures is to improve the ecological balance and to eliminate the negative anthropogenic impact that augments and aggravates the action of the negative geo-climatic and pedological factors, in of with the protection of soil quality.

Abstract Recent experiments have shown that different regions of myelin basic protein (MBP) are encephalitogenic for different inbred strains of mice. It was therefore of interest to determine whether the immune response to MBP was MHC associated, and if so, what subregion controlled this response. Because PL/J and A/J mice were good responders to mouse MBP and C57Bl/10SN were not, B10.PL(73NS) and B10.A mice were immunized with mouse MBP under conditions designed to induce EAE. These strains were found to be highly susceptible. Intra-H-2 recombinant mice were then assessed for susceptibility. B10.A(4R) and B10.MBR were susceptible, whereas B10.A(5R) were resistant. Thus, EAE induced by purified MBP is under the control of the MHC, and the response maps to the I-A subregion. Production of IL 2 in vitro by T cells from MBP-primed mice in the presence of antigen and adherent cells was blocked by monoclonal antibody to the I-A, but not the I-E, subregion. When the specificity of the encephalitogenic response was tested, peptide 1-37 was active in B10.PL(73NS) and B10.A mice, whereas peptide 89-169 was active in A.SW, SWR, and B10.T(6R) strains. Serum from mice immunized with MBP peptides was assayed for antibody content. PL, B10.PL, and B10.A mice made a good antibody response to peptides 1-37 and 43-88 but were nonresponsive to peptide 89-169. This research was performed to test the effectiveness of the microclimate body cooling system which belongs to the group of active systems with liquid-cooled technology. The liquid cooling vest efficiency was observed concerning the physiological fitness of the standard protective set used in specific environmental conditions which imply increased thermal strain of the test subjects. Experimental results from the research are based on the examinations carried out in a thermo-physiological laboratory. Ten healthy male volunteers - test subjects aged (23.4 ? 2.4 years, weight 74 ? 7 kg, and height 184 ? 9 cm) were exposed to thermal strain testing (40 ?C temperature, 40?3% relative humidity, without wind) and simultaneously to physical effort caused by walking on the treadmill at a speed of 5 km/h, during 45 minutes. Tests were performed in two variants - without any cooling system (NC) and with the KewlFlow Circulatory Cooling Vest with Cooler Kit (LC). Throughout heat exposure, the subject's body core temperature (tympanic temperature - Tty), mean skin temperature (Tsk) and heart rate (HR) were measured. Furthermore, sweat rate (SwR) was calculated in order to determine all changes in the water and electrolyte status. Experimental results confirm that the results of this study have recognized the benefits of a liquid-cooled vest in lowering the thermal strain.

Abstract Administration in the drinking water of the orally-active iron chelator 1,2-diethyl-3-hydroxypyridin-4-one (CP94) to C57BL/10ScSn mice caused the development of hepatic protoporphyria. This was detected after 1 week and continued as long as the chelator was given (15 weeks). The more hydrophilic 1,2-dimethyl- and 1-hydroxyethyl,2-ethyl-analogues (CP20 and CP102) were also tested, but they were both inactive in inducing accumulation of protoporphyrin in the liver. Restriction of in vivo iron supply for ferrochelatase seemed a likely mode of action, but an approximately 30% decrease in activity of this enzyme was also observed when measured in vitro. Extracts of livers from mice given CP20, CP94, and CP102 showed no potential to inhibit mouse ferrochelatase, in contrast to the findings with an extract from mice treated with the known porphyrogenic chemical 4-ethyl - 3 , 5 - diethoxycarbonyl - 2 , 6 - dimethyl - 1 , 4 - dihydropyridine, -indicating that ferrochelatase inhibition did not occur by the formation of an N-ethyl-protoporphyrin derived from metabolism by cytochrome P450. CP20, CP94, CP102, and CP117 (the pivoyl ester of CP102) all caused significant depression of the levels of ferritin-iron and total nonheme iron, but only CP94 caused the significant accumulation of protoporphyrin. Protoporphyria did not occur with iron overloaded C57BL/10ScSn mice or in SWR mice that had elevated basal iron status. Although the protoporphyrin had only a small effect on the total levels of the hemoprotein cytochrome P450 in C57BL/10ScSn mice, the activity of the CYP2B isoforms of cytochrome P450 was actually induced in both strains. The results show that CP94 could cause protoporphyria in individuals of low iron status, perhaps through specifically targeting particular iron pools available to ferrochelatase and by concomitantly stimulating heme synthesis.

ABSTRACT Laboratory mouse strains carry endogenous copies of the xenotropic mouse leukemia viruses (X-MLVs), named for their inability to infect cells of the laboratory mouse. This resistance to exogenous infection is due to a nonpermissive variant of the XPR1 gammaretrovirus receptor, a resistance that also limits in vivo expression of germ line X-MLV proviruses capable of producing infectious virus. Because laboratory mice vary widely in their proviral contents and in their virus expression patterns, we screened inbred strains for sequence and functional variants of the XPR1 receptor. We also typed inbred strains and wild mouse species for an endogenous provirus, Bxv1, that is capable of producing infectious X-MLV and that also contributes to the generation of pathogenic recombinant MLVs. We identified the active Bxv1 provirus in many common inbred strains and in some Japanese Mus molossinus mice but in none of the other wild mouse species that carry X-MLVs. Our screening for Xpr1 variants identified the permissive Xpr1sxv allele in 7 strains of laboratory mice, including a Bxv1-positive strain, F/St, which is characterized by lifelong X-MLV viremia. Cells from three strains carrying Xpr1sxv , namely, SWR, SJL, and SIM.R, were shown to be infectable by X-MLV and XMRV; these strains carry different alleles at Fv1 and vary in their sensitivities to specific X/P-MLV isolates and XMRV. Several strains with Xpr1sxv lack the active Bxv1 provirus or other endogenous X-MLVs and may provide a useful model system to evaluate the in vivo spread of these gammaretroviruses and their disease potential in their natural host.

The behaviour-contingent rhythmic synchronization of neuronal activity is reported by local field potential oscillations in the theta, gamma and sharp wave-related ripple (SWR) frequency ranges. In the hippocampus, pyramidal cell assemblies representing temporal sequences are coordinated by GABAergic interneurons selectively innervating specific postsynaptic domains, and discharging phase locked to network oscillations. We compare the cellular network dynamics in the CA1 and CA3 areas recorded with or without anaesthesia. All parts of pyramidal cells, except the axon initial segment, receive GABA from multiple interneuron types, each with distinct firing dynamics. The axon initial segment is exclusively innervated by axo-axonic cells, preferentially firing after the peak of the pyramidal layer theta cycle, when pyramidal cells are least active. Axo-axonic cells are inhibited during SWRs, when many pyramidal cells fire synchronously. This dual inverse correlation demonstrates the key inhibitory role of axo-axonic cells. Parvalbumin-expressing basket cells fire phase locked to field gamma activity in both CA1 and CA3, and also strongly increase firing during SWRs, together with dendrite-innervating bistratified cells, phasing pyramidal cell discharge. Subcellular domain-specific GABAergic innervation probably developed for the coordination of multiple glutamatergic inputs on different parts of pyramidal cells through the temporally distinct activity of GABAergic interneurons, which differentially change their firing during different network states.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar la motivación autodeterminada hacia el ejercicio físico, autoconcepto físico, barreras hacia la actividad física e intención de ser físicamente activo entre adolescentes con y sin sobrepeso/obesidad. Una muestra de 333 escolares, de 13 a 16 años, participaron en esta investigación. Para la medición de las distintas variables se utilizaron instrumentos validados: Índice de masa corporal, Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire, Physical Self Description Questionnaire, Autoinforme de Barreras para la Práctica de Ejercicio Físico e Intention to Be Physically Active Questionnaire. Los resultados mostraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas de acuerdo al índice de masa corporal (sobrepeso/obesidad) en todas las variables analizadas tanto en chicos como en chicas (p < 0,05), excepto en la intención de ser físicamente activo. La comprensión de los factores predictores o determinantes de la actividad física analizados, resulta relevante por ser estos potencialmente modificables. Por tanto, adaptar programas de intervención orientados a promocionar actividad física a las evidencias encontradas ayudaría a aumentar los índices de participación activa en escolares, especialmente en aquellos con sobrepeso u obesidad.Abstract: The aim of the present study was to compare self-determined motivation towards exercise, physical self-concept, barriers towards physical activity, and intention to be physically active among adolescents with and without overweight/obesity. A sample of 333 schoolchildren aged 13 to 16 years old participated in this research study. Validated instruments were used for the measurement of the variables included in the study: Body Mass Index, Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire, Physical Self Description Questionnaire, Self-report of Barriers towards the Practice of Exercise, and Intention to Be Physically Active Questionnaire. The results showed statistically significant differences by body mass index (overweight/obesity) in all analyzed variables in both boys and girls (p < 0.05), except for the intention to be physically active. Understanding the analyzed predictive factors or determinants of physical activity is essential because they are potentially modifiable. Therefore, using the evidences found in our study to adapt physical activity promotion intervention programs would help increasing the rates of active participation in schoolchildren, especially those who are overweight or obese.

Plasma active renin and prorenin were followed for 12 h after bilateral, unilateral, and sham nephrectomy (BNx, UNx, and SNx) in anesthetized transgenic (mRen-2)27 rats to compare them with Sprague-Dawley and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SDR and SHR). In Ren-2 rats, active renin and prorenin increased with plasma potassium post-BNx and were augmented by potassium infusion. The increase in prorenin but not active renin was abolished by bilateral adrenalectomy (BADRx). However, this did not reduce prorenin below normal, indicating that the high plasma prorenin Ren-2 phenotype is not only of adrenal origin. SNx and UNx also raised plasma active renin and prorenin in Ren-2 rats, with positive correlations to plasma potassium. In SDR and SHR, active renin fell below prorenin post-BNx, and adrenal ablation and potassium loading (in SDR) modified the decreasing active renin profile consistent with low levels of regulated extrarenal secretion. In Ren-2 rats, adrenal but not extra-adrenal prorenin secretion is potassium sensitive and stress related. The unidentified source of active renin in BNx+BADRx Ren-2 rats is also potassium and stress related.

AbstractBased on our deep image of Sgr A using broadband data observed with the VLA† at 6 cm, we present a new perspective of the radio bright zone at the Galactic center. We further show the radio detection of the X-ray Cannonball, a candidate neutron star associated with the Galactic center SNR Sgr A East. The radio image is compared with the Chandra X-ray image to show the detailed structure of the radio counterparts of the bipolar X-ray lobes. The bipolar lobes are likely produced by the winds from the activities within Sgr A West, which could be collimated by the inertia of gas in the CND, or by the momentum driving of Sgr A*; and the poloidal magnetic fields likely play an important role in the collimation. The less-collimated SE lobe, in comparison to the NW one, is perhaps due to the fact that the Sgr A East SN might have locally reconfigured the magnetic field toward negative galactic latitudes. In agreement with the X-ray observations, the time-scale of ∼1 × 104 yr estimated for the outermost radio ring appears to be comparable to the inferred age of the Sgr A East SNR.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been widely involved in military reconnaissance and detection of moving targets. SAR active decoy can generate deceptive jamming signal and it can severely affect the content of SAR focused image. SAR range Doppler algorithm (RDA) is considered as one of the most common algorithms utilized in the image formation processor (IFP) in SAR sensors. In this paper, the inverse RDA (IRDA) deception jamming technique and its evaluation criteria on SAR are demonstrated. Mathematical formulations for SAR RDA with and without deception jamming are presented. Matlab simulation and results of SAR RDA under the proposed deception scenario are discussed. SAR point target simulation of the proposed deceptive jamming and false target insertion into real large scene are also introduced. Comparison of the proposed deceptive jamming to signal power ratio (JSR) required to counter SAR with other SAR jamming techniques is analyzed.

Aquí existe un sistema de 5 tipos de Unidades Territoriales (macrobloques= 2, mesobloques= 2, bloques= 29, microbloques= 44, y nanobloques= 202) en relaciones espacio-temporales actuales con una red de 29 alineaciones principales y 32 intersecciones o nudos. El 59% de los bloques es muy activo o activo, y el territorio tiene un valor de ~0.03 fracturas/km2 con 63 escarpes. Las zonas con mayor actividad están entre las localidades de Barbate-Torrecera-Sierra de las Cabras (en Cádiz) y Ronda-Embalse Gudaltela Cabras-Villalón (en Málaga). El segmento de Cádiz-Málaga tiene características similares a las de la zona colindante de Almería-Córdoba-Granada-Jaén-Murcia. Fifty-nine percent of the blocks are very active or active, and the territory has a mean value of ~0.03 fractures/km2 with 63 scarps. The most active zones are between Barbate-Torrecera-Sierra de las Cabras (in Cádiz) and Ronda-Embalse Gudaltela-Cabras-Villalon (in Málaga). Neste artigo se relatam duas estratégias que podem ser usadas pelos professores do ensino superior para promoção de atividades em ambientes de aprendizagem ativa, em sala de aula e fora dela. O presente estudo tem abordagem qualitativa e quanto aos seus objetivos se caracteriza como exploratória-descritiva; já quanto aos procedimentos técnicos se configura como bibliográfica e documental e a interpretação dos resultados, como análise de discurso interpretativo. This paper is focused on the design, implementation and testing of an active reflector, to be used to support deformation monitoring studies based on Synthetic Aperture Radar interferometry. The device is designed to work in C-band with Sentinel-1 data, operating at 5.405 GHz ± 50 MHz. A brief description of the active reflector is provided. It consists of two antennas and an amplifying section. The active reflector has been tested in different experiments. In this paper, we describe the experiment carried out in the Parc Mediterrani de la Tecnologia (Castelldefels, Barcelona). The result shows a strong correlation with temperature. A calibration test was carried out to experimentally derive a calibration curve to correct the effect of temperature on phase stability.

Stem cells divide and differentiate to form all of the specialized cell types in a multicellular organism. In theArabidopsisroot, stem cells are maintained in an undifferentiated state by a less mitotically active population of cells called the quiescent center (QC). Determining how the QC regulates the surrounding stem cell initials, or what makes the QC fundamentally different from the actively dividing initials, is important for understanding how stem cell divisions are maintained. Here we gained insight into the differences between the QC and the cortex endodermis initials (CEI) by studying the mobile transcription factor SHORTROOT (SHR) and its binding partner SCARECROW (SCR). We constructed an ordinary differential equation model of SHR and SCR in the QC and CEI which incorporated the stoichiometry of the SHR-SCR complex as well as upstream transcriptional regulation of SHR and SCR. Our model prediction, coupled with experimental validation, showed that high levels of the SHR-SCR complex are associated with more CEI division but less QC division. Furthermore, our model prediction allowed us to propose the putative upstream SHR regulators SEUSS and WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX 5 and to experimentally validate their roles in QC and CEI division. In addition, our model established the timing of QC and CEI division and suggests that SHR repression of QC division depends on formation of the SHR homodimer. Thus, our results support that SHR-SCR protein complex stoichiometry and regulation of SHR transcription modulate the division timing of two different specialized cell types in the root stem cell niche.

Contexte : Bien que le Canada dispose à la fois d’un système national de surveillance active et de données administratives pour la surveillance passive des infections associées aux soins de santé (IASS), chacun des deux systèmes présente des forces et des faiblesses au niveau de la collecte et de la communication des données. La surveillance active et la surveillance passive fonctionnent de manière indépendante, ce qui donne parfois des résultats divergents. Pour comprendre les divergences qui existent entre les données administratives sur la santé et les données issues de la surveillance active, un examen de la portée a été réalisé. Méthodes : Des recherches ont été menées dans les bases de données Medline, Embase et Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, ainsi que dans la littérature grise pour trouver des études en anglais et en français évaluant l’utilisation de données administratives, seules ou en comparaison avec les données issues de la surveillance traditionnelle et réalisées au Canada entre 1995 et le 2 novembre 2020. Après avoir extrait les renseignements pertinents des articles sélectionnés, un résumé descriptif des résultats a été présenté, accompagné de suggestions pour améliorer les systèmes de surveillance, dans le but d’optimiser la qualité globale des données. Résultats : Seize articles répondaient aux critères d’inclusion, dont douze études observationnelles et quatre revues systématiques. Ces études ont démontré que l’utilisation d’une seule source de données administratives n’était pas assez précise pour la surveillance des IASS, par rapport à la surveillance active traditionnelle. Cependant, la combinaison de différentes sources de données ou la combinaison de données administratives et de données issues de la surveillance active en améliore la précision. Les systèmes de surveillance électronique peuvent également renforcer la surveillance en augmentant la capacité à détecter les IASS potentielles. Conclusion : Bien que la surveillance active des IASS ait produit les résultats les plus précis et demeure la norme d’excellence en la matière, l’intégration des données issues de la surveillance active et passive peut être optimisée. Les données administratives peuvent être utilisées pour renforcer la surveillance active traditionnelle. De futures études sont nécessaires pour évaluer la faisabilité et les avantages des solutions potentielles proposées pour l’utilisation des données administratives pour la surveillance et la déclaration des IASS au Canada.

RESUMENLa población española está envejeciendo lo que, unido a una mejora de condiciones de vida, hace aumentar las posibilidades de desarrollar un envejecimiento activo. Investigadores y agentes sociales han intentado medirlo, a pesar de su dificultad. Este trabajo pretende analizar cómo las personas mayores en España construyen su envejecimiento activo, evaluando sus dimensiones, factores y efectos en su estilo de vida. Los datos cuantitativos proceden de la Encuesta Piloto del Estudio Longitudinal Envejecer en España (ELES-EP). Se complementan con 7 grupos focales a 50 personas de 50 y más años, participantes en ELES-EP, y 10 entrevistas en profundidad con responsables de organizaciones de la sociedad civil de personas mayores. Analizados con ATLAS.ti, aportan una visión no profesional sobre el envejecimiento activo. Los resultados muestran que estas personas en España no definen claramente el envejecimiento activo, pero identifican factores condicionantes relacionados con el pilar “participación”, las actividades principales (personales, culturales y sociales, de disfrute de tiempo libre, de participación en iniciativas sociales) y los beneficios que consiguen. Esta visión no profesional puede ser así comparada con la identificada en la literatura científica. Estudios futuros deberían encaminarse a obtener las claves para la conceptualización del envejecimiento activo por los propios protagonistas.Palabras Clave: Envejecimiento Activo, Personas Mayores, Perspectiva no profesional, Metodología mixta, España.ABSTRACTThe Spanish population is becoming older and alternatives for the development of an active living in different social contexts arise. Efforts to make active ageing an operative concept under professional and non-professional views (research, social agents, individuals) have been made. The paper aims at analysing how older adults in Spain build their active ageing, by studying the dimensions, factors and consequences that derive from their way of living. Quantitative data come from the Longitudinal Aging Study in Spain, Pilot Survey, ELES-PS, completed those from seven focus groups, composed by 50 individuals older than 50, participants in ELES-PS, and 9 indepth interviews with senior social organizations officers. Qualitative data have been analysed with ATLAS.ti. Results show that older people in Spain do not clearly define what active ageing is for them, but their discourses allows identifying some conditioning factors of their active behaviour, their main declared activities (personal, cultural, social activities, leisure time in general, involvement in some social participation interests) and the benefits they get. Literature on active ageing will allow comparison with active ageing’s lay vision. Future research should aim to obtain the keys for the conceptualization of active aging by the older people themselves.Keywords: Active Ageing, Older Adults, Lay Perspective, Mixed methods, Spain.

El envejecimiento activo la lógica consecuencia de los cambios demográficos, sociales, económicos y políticos que se vienen produciendo en las sociedades de todo el planeta. Analizaremos su definición y debatiremos sobre si puede ser considerado como significante vacío el nuevo paradigma. Repasaremos los pilares que lo definen y recogeremos los factores que han determinado la necesidad de un nuevo paradigma para el envejecimiento activo. This paper analyzes its definition and discusses whether the new paradigm can be considered an empty signifier. For this purpose, the pillars that define it are reviewed and the factors that have determined the need for a new paradigm for active ageing are collected. The limitations of basic active deception jamming model against SAR reconnaissance were analyzed detailed, and the necessary conditions of false target deployment for the model were derived. Some modifications and adjustment of the basic model were made, for which target-centric signal transmission schedule was proposed instead of jammer-centric schedule, time-varying repetition delay and time-varying Doppler parameters of false signal were made instead fixed parameters. The modified model extended false target’s displacement and improved the fidelity of false target. And some calculation examples and discussions were done in the end.
