Australian housing prices are reported to be overvalued and unaffordable for the past two decades. Many researchers and practitioners have attributed the persistent growth in housing prices to the prolonged period of low borrowing costs. However, due to inflationary pressure, the Central Bank has raised its cash rate consecutively in recent months. This paper aims to examine whether interest rate rises affect housing price in different parts of Australia. Evidence generated from the analysis reported bipolar results between the large and smaller cities, whereby housing prices in Sydney and Melbourne show a significant negative relationship with interest rate changes while Brisbane and the Gold Coast and Perth and Adelaide, respectively, are showing negative but insignificant results during the study period. Short-run trend projections on housing prices indicate that Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are on a downward trend while Adelaide and Perth will maintain its current momentum before plateauing out later next year. Likewise, control variables, such as oil prices, inflation rate and stock market performance, are found to be related to housing prices in larger cities only. These findings have implications on housing policy, house purchase decisions and investment portfolio management strategy.

Following early life on a farm in South Australia and a degree in Physics at the University of Adelaide, Rod Davies began his research career at the Radiophysics Laboratory in Sydney in 1951, working on the development of radio interferometers for solar observations. In 1953, he moved to the University of Manchester, Jodrell Bank, working with Bernard Lovell, later becoming the Director of Jodrell Bank from 1988 to 1997 and the President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1987 to 1989. He is best known for leading observations of the structure of the cosmic microwave background, first carried out at Jodrell Bank and then transferred to Tenerife during the 1980s and 90s. Later, he was instrumental in establishing the European Space Agency's Planck spacecraft mission and continued after retirement to be closely involved in the interpretation of the data from Planck . He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1992 and awarded a CBE in 1995. During Rod's tenure as Director of Jodrell Bank, he was responsible for the start of a major project to upgrade the Lovell Telescope, recognizing that with increased capability it could play a leading role into the 21st century. He was also Director during a major upgrade to the MERLIN telescope array, completed around 1991, and making MERLIN a modern, useable, open-access instrument. It was transformed into a true national facility, funded by government, and widely used by the national and international radio astronomy community. Rod Davies was always a kind and generous colleague, and a great inspiration to several generations of radio astronomers.

ABSTRACTThree clinicalPseudomonas aeruginosaisolates (WCH2677, WCH2813, and WCH2837) isolated from the Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide, Australia, produced a metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-positive Etest result. All isolates were PCR negative for known MBL genes. A gene bank was created, and an MBL gene, designatedblaAIM-1, was cloned and fully characterized. The encoded enzyme, AIM-1, is a group B3 MBL that has the highest level of identity to THIN-B and L1. It is chromosomal and flanked by two copies (one intact and one truncated) of an ISCRelement, ISCR15. Southern hybridization studies indicated the movement of both ISCR15andblaAIM-1within the three different clinical isolates. AIM-1 hydrolyzes most β-lactams, with the exception of aztreonam and, to a lesser extent, ceftazidime; however, it possesses significantly higherkcatvalues for cefepime and carbapenems than most other MBLs. AIM-1 was the first mobile group B3 enzyme detected and signals further problems for already beleaguered antimicrobial regimes to treat seriousP. aeruginosaand other Gram-negative infections.

A mark-recapture experiment was used to estimate the total population of crocodiles in four 10-km sections of the Adelaide River; a downstream and upstream section of the mainstream, and two sections of tidal side creeks. The Petersen Estimate yielded 135 � 5 (SE) crocodiles in the downstream river section, 54 � 6 in the upstream section, and 44 � 2 in the two side creeks combined (approximately 22 crocodiles per 10 km of side creek). For the two mainstream sections and the combined creek sections, respectively, 66%, 59%, and 35% of crocodiles present were sighted in a typical spotlight survey. The probability of sighting a crocodile decreased with increasing density of bank vegetation, with decreasing stream width, and with increasing stream sinuosity. Detection of crocodiles in the downstream river section was also affected by size-related wariness: the probability of detecting hatchlings was large (P = 0.69), and for crocodiles longer than 3.0 m, small (P = 0.15). Diurnal counts of crocodiles from a helicopter were calibrated to spotlight counts from a boat at low tide in a 40-km mainstream section and four tidal side creeks of the Adelaide River system. In river habitats with large exposed mudbanks, aerial observers missed 20-33% of sightable crocodiles in their field of view; and in side creeks lined with dense mangroves, 33-75%. When corrected for this observer bias, helicopter surveys in the mainstream at low spring tide produced similar counts to spotlight surveys. In the mainstream, helicopter counts at low neap tide were 37% lower than spotlight counts at low spring tide, but in side creeks were 45% higher. In comparison with spotlight counts, only 18% and 29% of crocodiles were seen . from a helicopter in two densely vegetated freshwater billabongs. A feasibility survey showed that in remote areas helicopter surveys produced counts of crocodiles similar to those by spotlight surveys from boats, and cost one-quarter as much ($7 km-1 compared with $28 km-1 of habitat surveyed).

Late Proterozoic (Adelaidean) to Late Cambrian sediments of the Adelaide Geosyncline form a mountainous backbone to South Australia. Geological studies of the region date back to the beginning of European exploration and colonisation, although these were limited until the 1940s due to the small, isolated nature of the geological community. No detailed understanding of this extensive region emerged until the beginning of the twentieth century when sections were measured and the significance of widespread Late Precambrian glaciation was recognised. The search for fossils has been long and often unsuccessful. Trilobites and archaeocyatha, which were later determined as Cambrian, were found as early as 1879. The internationally famous Ediacara fauna was discovered in 1946. Unusual piercement structures containing breccias were only widely mapped after World War Two with a diapiric origin being proposed in 1960. In 1952, the province was classified as basically miogeo-synclinal with a late stage eugeosyncline in the southeast. This has recently been reinterpreted in terms of plate tectonics.

Early in 1982 CSR Limited established an Oil and Gas Division. By 1983 this Division had recruited twenty-six overseas technical personnel mainly from Canada and the United Kingdom. The Company needed to recruit overseas because the skills required were not available in Australia.During 1983 a review of the recruitment and settlement of these personnel and their families was undertaken. The objectives of this review were to:improve the Company performance in the recruitment, induction and settlement of overseas recruits and their families;increase the likely "length of stay" in Australia of overseas recruits and their families;to address specific problems faced by recruits and their families in settlement in Australia.In depth interviews were conducted with twenty-one of the twenty-six recruits and their families using a structured interview format.The analysis of the interviews results revealed that:on average it took longer for those recruited in the United Kingdom to obtain immigration "approvals" and to physically relocate than those recruited in Canada;families with previous experience in relocating adapted and coped better with the physical move and resettlement than families without previous experience.The detailed results showed further that:While there was sufficient information provided about the job and department, there was dissatisfaction with the lack of detailed information about aspects of living in Australia, particularly: taxation; housing; bank mortgage arrangements; cost of living data and medical insurance.There were gaps in the expectations that many- recruits and their families had about living in Australia, such as climate, lifestyle and housing. This was attributed to an "oversell" through glossy brochures and "word pictures".The attention given to staff and their families on arrival was seen as a positive introduction to Australia and CSR's Oil and Gas Division.The provision of initial temporary accommodation in a single apartment complex for all overseas recruits and families in Adelaide assisted greatly in the induction and settlement process. It provided a high level of support especially for wives with young children. The "welcome waggon" group together with the assistance provided by the wives of senior executives were also positive influences in the settlement process.The most positive features seen in the move to Australia were career and lifestyle opportunities. On the other hand loss of disposable income was seen as a significant negative.From the results and analysis a detailed set of recommendations and actions were developed to improve company performance in recruitment and settlement. These recommendations were implementated prior to the 1984 recruiting mission to Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.The preliminary results from the 1984 recruiting mission have resulted in:a reduction in recruiting lead time;quicker and more informed decision making by candidates and their families in accepting job offers;more professional preparation of both the recruiting teams and the company's agents overseas.

A surprisingly large amount of information about atmospheric dynamics can be obtained by studying the fluctuations of the amplitude and phase of radar echoes back-scattered from density irregularities. The method has been extensively used by the Atmospheric Physics Group at the University of Adelaide, and elsewhere. In the present paper these techniques are traced back to their origin in the pioneering work of J. L. Pawsey in the 1930s, and followed through to the present day. The reasons which led to the construction of the large antenna array near Adelaide (the 'Buckland Park array') are explained, and the observations which can be made with it are described. These include radar measurements of winds, turbulence and momentum flux in the height range 60 to 95 km. Plans for instrumental improvements and for future work are outlined. The paper is not intended to be a general review of the field, but rather a history of a technique and its development in the research groups with which the author has been associated.

Metode pelashingan merupakan metode yang sangat penting untuk mengikat peti kemas di atas kapal agar tidak terjadi pergeseran peti kemas yang daapat menimbulkan peti kemas terjatuh di laut bahkan lebih dari itu bisa menimbulkan gangguan stabilitas kapal dan dapat menimbulkan kecelakaan pelayaran. Metode lashing dapat dilaksanakan dengan baik bila dilakukan pemeliharaan dan perawatan terhadap lashing serta penempatannya yang mudah untuk digunakan secara efektif dalam pelashingan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian studi kasus yang terjadi di kapal. MV Port Adelaide yang diamati dalam pelayaran, Penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pemeliharaan dan perawatan lashing yang belum dilakukan secara baik dan dalam pengimplementasian perawatan dan pemeliharaannya oleh awak kapal yang paling bertanggung jawab. Teknis analisis yang digunakan adalah menggunakan diskriptif analisis dengan menggunakan data primer dari awak kapal yang mempunyai fungsi kunci dalsm menyampaikan inormasi dengan mengunakan teknik purpusive sampling. Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa pemeliharaan dan perawatan lashing belum di implemetasikan dengan baik sehingga menghambat pengoperasian kapal. Awak kapal yang paling bertanggung jawab dalam tugas pelasingan tidak dapat menjalankan tugasnya dengan baik.

In the 12th century, a large number of European scholars have travelled to the East in order to learn and ultimately bring back with them new scientific knowledge. Translators played the major role. Among those translators is Adelard of Bath whom this study aims to investigate his original works along with the works he translated from Arabic into Latin. The study will follow his travels from his hometown of Bath to France where he studied, and finally to the East where he learned from the Arabs. It will also briefly highlight the situation of education during the so-called Dark Ages in Europe. Moreover, Adelard’s original works before and after travelling are examined in order to see to what extent Adelard was influenced by the Arabs. Adelard’s translated books into English are used as primary resources for this research, in addition to other secondary references. As a result of conducting this research, it can be seen that the thought of Arabs have prevailed in Adelard’s works as he stressed the importance of the methodology followed by them. Adelard has contributed to forming a cusp between the Islamic Civilization and the European Renaissance; and hence further studies need to be carried out about Adelard as well as his endeavors with East.

The impetus for investigating the probability density function of high-frequency (HF) noise arises from the requirement for a better noise model for automatic modulation recognition techniques. Many current modulation recognition methods still assume Gaussian noise models for the transmission medium. For HF communications this can be an incorrect assumption. Whereas a previous investigation [1] focuses on the noise density function in an urban area of Adelaide Australia, this work studies the noise density function in a remote country location east of Adelaide near Swan Reach, South Australia. Here, the definition of HF noise is primarily of natural origins – it is therefore impulsive – and excludes man-made noise sources. A new method for measuring HF noise is introduced that is used over a 153 kHz bandwidth at various frequencies across the HF band. The method excises man-made signals and calculates the noise PDF from the residue. Indeed, the suitability of the Bi-Kappa distribution at modeling HF noise is found to be even more compelling than suggested by the results of the earlier investigation.

This is a critical review of changes in the two years since I wrote “The Invisibility of Islamic Art in Australia” for The Conversation in 2016. This includes the National Museum of Australia’s collaborative exhibition “So That You May Know Each Other” (2018), and the rise of the Eleven Collective through their exhibitions “We are all affected” (2017) in Sydney and “Waqt al-Tagheer – Time of Change” (2018) in Adelaide. It considers the representation of Australian contemporary artists in the documentary “You See Monsters” (2017) by Tony Jackson and Chemical Media, and the exhibition “Khalas! Enough!” (2018) at the UNSW. These initiatives demonstrate the momentum of generational change within contemporary Australian art and literary performance cultures. These creative practitioners have articulated their work through formidable public networks. They include well-established and emerging artists, driven to engage with political and social contexts that have defined their peers by antagonism or marginalisation. There has never been a ‘Golden Age’ for ‘Islamic’ arts in Australia. But as the Eleven Collective have argued, we are living in a time of change. This is an exceptional period for the creation and mobilisation of artworks that articulate what it means to be Muslim in Australia.

BackgroundRecordings of heatwaves date back to the early 1900s and usually are associated with high mortality. In Australia, heatwaves have been the major cause of natural hazard-related deaths. Heatwaves usually do not carry the global media coverage associated with other disasters, and frequently, are referred to as silent disasters. The main impact of heatwaves is on health and human life.ObjectivesPreliminary results are presented for the 2009 heatwave, investigating the emergency department patient presentations from three public hospitals in Adelaide, a city in the central southern area of Australia.MethodsDemographic and syndromic data were obtained from emergency department records. Ethics permission was obtained prior to data collection. Heatwave conditions occurred from 26 January–07 February 2009. Two non-heatwave periods were day-matched approximately two weeks before and after the heatwave. Data were analyzed by age groups, gender, and ICD codes for chronic conditions.ResultsThe two largest groups of people presenting were between 15 and 64 years of age and > 75 years of age during the heatwave and non-heatwave periods. During the heatwave period, both groups had significant increases in patient presentation related to renal problems (ICD 10: N000-N3999) and dehydration and hyperthermia (ICD10: E86, T67). The latter syndrome was far more accentuated during the heatwave, with emergency department patient presentations rising from 2 (non heatwave) to 62 presentations for the 15 and 64 years cohort and from 4 (non heatwave) to 91 for the > 75 years cohort. Cardiovascular- and respiratory-related presentations showed slight increases during the heatwave, while mental health had high presentations for the 15–64 year cohort throughout heatwave and non heatwave periods.ConclusionsBoth young and older people were affected by heatwave, and precautionary warning should be used throughout the community to alert people of the dangers underlying extreme heat conditions.

Reprinted with the permission of the authors.Work in the Australian construction industry is fraught with risk and the potential for serious harm. The industry is consistently placed within the three most hazardous industries to work along with other industries such as mining and transport (National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, 2003). In the 2001 to 2002 period, construction work killed 39 people and injured 13,250 more. Hence, more effort is required to reduce the injury rate and maximise the value of the rehabilitation/back-to-work process.

In April 2010, Adelaide hosted the IXth national Special Olympics – a sporting event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. This article explores how the print media covered the Games. In particular, our interest is in the language adopted by reporters to describe the athletes and their performances. We were interested to see whether journalists adopted sporting language in their accounts of performances or, alternatively, adopted language that focused on the individual athlete's disability. The article explores a number of issues surrounding media coverage of sport for people with disabilities, including the extent to which media organisations perpetuate stereotypes about disability and whether this, if established, links back to the media's reliance on traditional news values.

Abstract The mineralogical composition, texture and fracture of natural rocks can be complicated due to the inherent heterogeneity of geomechanical properties, making it challenging to understand their behaviour. Due to the intrinsic layer by layer manufacturing process, 3D printing technology enables to create rock-like materials and specimens with known and controllable inhomogeneity. In this study, disc specimens of a rock-like material are fabricated using 3D printing of cement mortar for testing to understand fabric orientation effect on fracture behaviour better. For the first time, a novel technique, named AUSBIT (Adelaide University Snap-back Indirect Tensile test), for Brazilian disc tests is applied for obtaining both strength and snap-back post-peak behaviour of the 3D printed rock-like materials. Adopting Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique, in conjunction with the use of AUSBIT, allows obtaining full-field strains and their evolutions, showing strong effects of fabric orientation on strain distributions and both pre-and post-peak responses.

Early accounts by European explorers and settlers of South Australia contain numerous references to scums or discoloured water that are consistent with cyanobacterial blooms. Documented reports refer back to at least 1853. The first detailed scientific account of toxic cyanobacteria appeared in 1878. In a perceptive and prescient paper in Nature, the Adelaide assayer and chemist George Francis reported on stock deaths at Milang on the shores of Lake Alexandrina in South Australia. Francis attributed the deaths to the ingestion and toxicity of scums of the cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena. Reports of cyanobacterial blooms, scums and associated problems in Lake Alexandrina and in the River Murray between about 1851 and 1888 are discussed and comparisons are made with the reactions to blooms a century later.

IntroductionDelirium is a neurocognitive disorder common in older adults in acute care settings. Those who develop delirium are at an increased risk of dementia, cognitive decline and death. Electroencephalography (EEG) during delirium in older adults is characterised by slowing and reduced functional connectivity, but markers of vulnerability are poorly described. We aim to identify EEG spectral power and event-related potential (ERP) markers of incident delirium in older adults to understand neural mechanisms of delirium vulnerability. Characterising delirium vulnerability will provide substantial theoretical advances and outcomes have the potential to be translated into delirium risk assessment tools.Methods and analysisWe will record EEG in 90 participants over 65 years of age prior to elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We will record 4-minutes of resting state (eyes open and eyes closed) and a 5-minute frequency auditory oddball paradigm. Outcome measures will include frequency band power, 1/f offset and slope, and ERP amplitude measures. Participants will undergo cognitive and EEG testing before their elective procedures and daily postoperative delirium assessments. Group allocation will be done retrospectively by linking preoperative EEG data according to postoperative delirium status (presence, severity, duration and subtype).Ethics and disseminationThis study is approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Central Adelaide Local Health Network and the University of South Australia Human Ethics Committee. Based on nearly 2000 available records, the broadscale geographical distribution of the native earthworm fauna of Australia was mapped. Native earthworms were recorded from south-eastern, eastern and northern Australia within 400 km of the coast. Isolated faunas were present in Tasmania and south-west Western Australia, and apparently isolated faunas occurred in the Adelaide area/Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia and the ranges of central Australia. All but 30 locality records occurred where annual rainfall averaged or exceeded 400 mm; 16 of these records were instances of moisture-gaining sites (moist caves, waterholes, banks of large rivers, edge of granite domes). A collecting strategy to both fill in gaps in the distribution map and discover additional anomalous occurrences (with respect to the 400 mm isohyet) is outlined.

AbstractOn 22 April 1848, after three years in the Arctic, and 19 months spent ice-bound in northern Victoria Strait, the 105 surviving officers and crew of the Franklin Northwest Passage expedition deserted HMSErebusand HMSTerroras the first step of their escape plan. They assembled at a camp south of Victory Point on the northwest coast of King William Island and made the final preparations for the next step, a 400 km trek along the frozen seashores of King William Island and Adelaide Peninsula to the Back River. All of the men died before reaching their destination, and their remains have been found at 35 locations along the route of the retreat. These discoveries have played a central role in reenactments of events thought to have occurred during the failed attempt to reach the Back River and to the disastrous outcome of the expedition. This paper presents a summary of these findings and examines the criteria used to attribute them to the Franklin expedition. It is suggested that approximately one-third of the identifications have been based on information that is inadequate to confidently assign the human remains as those of Franklin expedition personnel.

The year 2020 marked the 95th anniversary of Francesco De Pinedo and Ernesto Campanelli's record-breaking flight of 55,000 km, from Italy to Australia, Japan and back, in a seaplane named Gennariello. Their achievement was lauded worldwide, especially in Australia, where the press reported on it intensively. This paper reconstructs the story of the flight by analysing the Australian press accounts and De Pinedo's diary, to understand how the Australian public perceived the event. It investigates the aviators’ arrival in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, where their popularity was greatest and where the local Italian communities enthusiastically welcomed them. The analysis shows that the flight engendered increased public interest and paid dividends in terms of image for the commercial companies involved, while fascism exploited it to display its progress in aviation. The paper concludes by exploring the legacy of the endeavour in modern Italy and Australia, emphasising the differences between the countries.

More well-maintained green spaces leading toward sustainable, smart green cities mean that alternative water resources (e.g., wastewater) are needed to fulfill the water demand of urban greenery. These alternative resources may introduce some environmental hazards, such as salt leaching through wastewater irrigation. Despite the necessity of salinity monitoring and management in urban green spaces, most attention has been on agricultural fields. This study was defined to investigate the capability and feasibility of monitoring and predicting soil salinity using proximal sensing and remote sensing approaches. The innovation of the study lies in the fact that it is one of the first research studies to investigate soil salinity in heterogeneous urban vegetation with two approaches: proximal sensing salinity mapping using Electromagnetic-induction Meter (EM38) surveys and remote sensing using the high-resolution multispectral image of WorldView3. The possible spectral band combinations that form spectral indices were calculated using remote sensing techniques. The results from the EM38 survey were validated by testing soil samples in the laboratory. These findings were compared to remote sensing-based soil salinity indicators to examine their competence on mapping and predicting spatial variation of soil salinity in urban greenery. Several regression models were fitted; the mixed effect modeling was selected as the most appropriate to analyze data, as it takes into account the systematic observation-specific unobserved heterogeneity. Our results showed that Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) was the only salinity index that could be considered for predicting soil salinity in urban greenery using high-resolution images, yet further investigation is recommended.

This paper explores the concept of an early intervention management system for the treatment of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) among orchestral musicians through the provision of on-site medical and rehabilitative services. This model of health care delivery, promoted in the occupational and sports rehabilitation literature, has been reported to significantly reduce costs and rehabilitation times. An on-site physiotherapy clinic was made available during the 1998 performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Questionnaire assessment of orchestra members highlighted a high incidence of PRMDs among the 50 respondents (86% reported neck symptoms, 70% upper back symptoms, 76% shoulder symptoms). The questionnaire highlighted a number of ergonomic issues that the respondents felt aggravated symptom development. One hundred fifteen treatments were administered during the clinic, of which 72% were to the small string section members, reflecting the high demands on this section of the orchestra during Wagner’s Ring Cycle. The cost to the orchestral management over the six-week period was approximately $12.00 per treatment, representing a significant savings. Indirect cost savings include reduced time and travel costs, and potentially reduced lost time because of injuries. This model of health care delivery was shown in this case to be cost-effective for the management of PRMDs during a major orchestral production.

The National Olive Variety Assessment (NOVA) collection, established at the Roseworthy Campus of the University of Adelaide, contains six replicate trees of 100 olive (Olea europaea L.) accessions grown in the same environment. The DNA fingerprints of these accessions were compared, using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), to those of a number of cultivars obtained from international collections. A total of 86 uniquely named accessions in the NOVA collection resulted in 58 different genotypes. Different names were synonyms for the same genotype, and homonyms were also found where accessions with the same name had different DNA fingerprints. A rapid and efficient protocol was developed to identify unknown olive genotypes using a two-stage process. Data from DNA fingerprints were added to a matrix already containing binary data from recognized standard cultivars. The estimated probability of any given RAPD profile randomly occurring at this stage ranged between 6 × 10-4 and 2 × 10-8. In the second stage, the approximate identity of the unknown genotype, revealed by the resulting dendrogram, was confirmed by comparing it with appropriate standards under identical conditions of DNA amplification and band separation. The data collected in this report form the basis of a genetic database that can be used for the identification of olive samples.

Athel Beckwith was an organic chemist whose research was concerned with free radicals, the reactive intermediates that play important roles in many organic chemical reactions. After studies and junior appointments at Australian universities, at Oxford University he worked with W. A. Waters and completed his doctorate at a time when scepticism about the very existence of free radicals was being rolled back by a small group of experimentalists. Returning to Australia, where he occupied chairs at the University of Adelaide and the Australian National University, Beckwith used studies of organic structure and mechanisms, revealed by kinetic methods and electron spin resonance spectroscopy, to become a world leader in this field of chemistry. He was honoured by election to Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science (1973) and the Royal Society of London (1989), by several awards from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, and by membership of the Order of Australia (2004). His extensive travels, often accompanied by his wife Kaye and their children, to work in overseas chemical research laboratories and to give presentations at international meetings, helped him to secure his place in networks at the highest levels of his profession. Several those who studied with him now hold important positions in Australian chemistry.

Summary Ergative marking and function are generally adequately described in the grammars of the small minority of the Aboriginal Australian Pama-Nyungan languages made before 1930. Without the benefit of an inherited descriptive framework in which to place foreign ergative morphosyntax, missionary-grammarians engaged a variety of terminology and descriptive practices when explaining foreign ergative structures exhibited by this vast genetic subgroup of languages spoken in an area larger than Europe. Some of the terminology had been previously employed in descriptions of other ergative languages. Other terms were innovated in Australia. The great distances separating missionary-grammarians describing different Pama-Nyungan languages, and the absence of a coordinating body fostering Australian grammatical description, meant that grammars were produced in geographic and intellectual isolation from one another. Regional schools of descriptive influence are however apparent, the strongest of which originates in grammars written by Lutheran missionaries of the ‘Adelaide School’. The synchronic descriptions of Pama-Nyungan languages made by missionary-grammarians in Australia informed the development of linguistics in Europe. There is however, little evidence of the movement of linguistic ideas from Europe back into Australia. The term ‘ergative’ to designate the case marking the agent of a transitive verb and the concept of an absolutive case became established practice in the modern era of Australian grammatical description without recognizing that the same terminology and concept of syntactic case had previously been employed in descriptions of Pama-Nyungan languages written in German. The genesis of the term ‘ergative’ originates in the description of Australian Pama-Nyungan case systems.

In this article I draw upon a definition of ‘dialogical memorial’ offered by Brad West to offer an experimental artist's brief that outlines the various ways that a contemporary monument to the colonial artist, Adelaide Eliza Scott Ironside (1831-1867), could ‘talk back’ to the nineteenth-century statues of her contemporaries, and ‘converse’ with more recent acts of history making. In contrast to the familiar figure of the individual hero, which we associate with the statuary of her age, I suggest a group monument that acknowledges the intimate intergenerational female network which shaped Aesi's life and also ‘re-presents’ – a term coined by the historian Greg Dening – several native born and convict women from the Georgian, Regency and Victorian eras who influenced her life. Instead of elevating Aesi upon a plinth, I recommend grounding this group monument on Gadigal country and planting around it many of the Australian Wildflowers she painted in ways that draw attention to the millennia-old Indigenous uses of the same plants. And finally, by situating Aesi’s monument in the Outer Domain (behind the New South Wales Art Gallery in Sydney’s Botanic Gardens and to the east of the Yurong Pennisula, near Woolloomooloo Bay), in an area where she once boldly assumed centre stage before a large male audience in a flamboyant moment of her own theatrical history-making, I argue that this memorial will have the capcity to speak for itself in ways that challenge the underepresentation of colonial women in Sydney's statuary, abd, as West suggests, do much to ‘alter the stage on which Sydney's colonial history 'is narrated and performed’. The forecast of wind energy is closely linked to the prediction of the variation of winds over very short time intervals. Four wind towers located in the Inner Mongolia were selected to understand wind power resources in the compound plateau region. The mesoscale weather research and forecasting combining Yonsei University scheme and Noah land surface model (WRF/YSU/Noah) with 1-km horizontal resolution and 10-min time resolution were used to be as the wind numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. Three statistical techniques, persistence, back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN), and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) were used to improve the wind speed forecasts at a typical wind turbine hub height (70 m) along with the WRF/YSU/Noah output. The current physical-statistical forecasting techniques exhibit good skill in three different time scales: (1) short-term (day-ahead); (2) immediate-short-term (6-h ahead); and (3) nowcasting (1-h ahead). The forecast method, which combined WRF/YSU/Noah outputs, persistence, and LS-SVM methods, increases the forecast skill by 26.3-49.4% compared to the direct outputs of numerical WRF/YSU/Noah model. Also, this approach captures well the diurnal cycle and seasonal variability of wind speeds, as well as wind direction. The seed banks of three pastures at Kingscote, Parndana and Waterloo, S.A., were sampled to determine the frequency of divergent genotypes in subterranean clover, and the direction of natural selection. The seeds were grown in nursery rows at Adelaide, and the resulting plants classified into one of the commercial cultivars, or as divergent genotypes. The divergent genotypes from one locality, Kingscote, were described in terms of 17 variables, and compared with strains collected from southern Australia and the Mediterranean basin. At each locality there was more genetic diversity than had been sown, both in terms of additional cultivars and the presence of divergent genotypes. The percentage of divergent genotypes appeared to be proportional to the age of the pasture, and was greatest at Kingscote, where it reached 67% of the population. The Kingscote genotypes were genetically related to Mt Barker and Dwalganup, only five out of 283 genotypes having leaf markings that differed from both cultivars. The 17 variables fell between the values recorded for Mt Barker and Dwalganup, and there was evidence of directional selection. For example, formononetin content was less, and genistein more than would be expected in the absence of natural selection. Mean flowering time was about equal to that of Seaton Park, and closer to Mt Barker than to Dwalganup. Flowering time was related to elevation above the lowest point in the paddock, the latest genotypes tending to inhabit sites at the foots of slopes, and the earliest genotypes sites on the tops. Seed and burr weight were slightly larger than expected. Hybridization was the most important, but not the sole source of genetic divergence at Kingscote, whereas contamination was the main source at Waterloo. It is likely that only a minority of the divergent genotypes was generated by mutation. The Australian subterranean clovers were as diverse as those from the Mediterranean. Those from Kingscote were also diverse, but, on the whole, had longer peduncles, shorter internodes and were taller than strains from other parts of Australia and from the Mediterranean basin.

El artículo esboza una economía política de la pandemia del coronavirus. En línea con Fernand Braudel, la peste es interpretada como un “golpe externo” que remite a estructuras de larga data. Detrás de la pandemia y de la recesión que la sigue se esconde una crisis profunda. Ella es consecuencia de la tenaza económico-ecológica que tiene atrapadas a las sociedades del Norte Global. Esta nueva cesura no puede entenderse sin tener en cuenta el crash financiero de 2007-2009 y el interregno político de los años de poscrisis. Según mi tesis, la pandemia y la recesión que la sigue son efectos repulsivos de una hiperglobalización que ha socavado progresivamente sus propios presupuestos. Sin embargo, no puede hablarse de un determinismo del coronavirus. La pandemia no conducirá espontáneamente a un “Build Back Better”. Un cambio de rumbo de este tipo exige alternativas creíbles y claramente delineadas, y, sobre todo, fuerzas sociales y actores políticos que lleven adelante los cambios. Por tanto, con llamamientos generales a las élites no se logra mucho. En lugar de ello, aquí se sugiere un análisis preciso de la tendencia hacia democracias bonapartistas que bloquean la revolución de sustentabilidad. El artículo explora las dificultades de una sociología pública y se expresa a favor de un nuevo orden institucional caracterizado por la democracia económica y la creación de consejos de transformación.

Los problemas enfocados en las bodegas siempre se han caracterizado porque dependen del tipo de negocio que fue analizado. Algunas empresas tienen zonas de cuarentena en sus bodegas y otras no. Algunas tienen out-and-back picking, y otras hacen picking en un solo recorrido para diferentes ítems. Algunas industrias tienen zonas de adelante, otras poseen zonas de almacenamiento a granel, zonas de producto retenido y de producto rechazado. En general, la optimización de las bodegas es realizada según todas las características mencionadas. En la presente investigación se desarrolló una heurística que fue adaptada con los supuestos y criterios de la regla del cube-per-order para la optimización de asignación de espacios unida con algunas de las bases para la optimización de picking, en el que la distancia de la ruta es importante pero no la ruta en sí. La aplicación fue realizada sobre un ejemplo de bodega, con base a la información suministrada por una empresa del sector industrial, en donde el aspecto crítico detectado consistía en conocer la posición óptima de las diferentes áreas y de los productos en las estanterías disponibles en la bodega. Lo cierto es que la protección de los derechos fundamentales no es una vía de un solo sentido que comienza con el individuo, sino una promesa de la Ley Fundamental que debe ser implementada por todos los poderes estatales. Todo el ordenamiento jurídico en sí debe ser libre, no solo el estatus legal del individuo. En los últimos meses, incluso la jurisprudencia de los tribunales inferiores y del Tribunal Constitucional Federal ha demostrado ser bastante débil. Purpose Most women who serve time in prison will eventually be released and expected to reintegrate back into society. To maximize the chances of success, careful support is usually required. An example of this support work was the Healthy Relationships Program (HRP, 2016) offered to women inmates of the Adelaide Women’s Prison (South Australia) pre-release. The content of the HRP was influenced by a gender-responsive framework and constructed as a social work program. The purpose of this paper is to report on a small qualitative study that used semi-structured interviews pre- and post-program to explore women participants’ expectations, perceptions and experiences of the program. In this paper, the focus is on the women inmates’ interview transcripts where a thematic analysis was conducted. Two main research questions drove this analysis. First: How did the women experience the HRP? Second: What does their reported experience reveal about the ongoing need for gender-responsive support? The key findings are that domestic violence and relationships with children are strong motivators for participation in programs; therefore, gender-responsive support is still required in prison programs. However, the paper also advocates that future iterations of gender-responsive support and social work interventions become more consciously intersectional feminist in orientation. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative design was used to explore what women thought the HRP taught them. Individual face-to-face interviews were used to explore women’s perceptions, ideas and experiences of healthy relationships. Thematic analysis was used to draw out the themes across interviews. Findings The key arguments made are that gender-responsive support is still required but that future iterations of gender-responsive support become more consciously intersectional feminist in orientation. Research limitations/implications The researchers experienced strict time restrictions to conduct interviews and therefore depth was somewhat compromised. To try and compensate for this restriction, the researchers visited potential participants as part of program recruitment and information sharing to help enable and build general rapport before the interviews. Time restrictions and prison security protocols did not allow for researchers to check transcripts with the women. Practical implications Reporting on this case study also showed that social work practice can influence relationships with institutions, such as prisons, that perpetrate marginalization and therefore enable a setting that facilitates safe participation in programs. Social implications Gender-responsive frameworks provide the much needed validation of gender differences, but also require a feminist intersectional lens to more consciously aid in the conceptualization and evaluation of future programs for women in prison. It is this intersectional lens that is more likely to bring multiple experiences of oppression into focus so that personal issues and problems can be analyzed in a richer wider social context, particularly intersections between gender, class and/ethnicity race. Originality/value This paper has reported on women’s expectations and experiences of a health relationships program and provides insight and learnings for future practitioners intending to run similar programs. Overall, the women participants were able to articulate their own personal learnings about interpersonal relationships and were able to acknowledge the impacts of abuse and violence in their lives in the program.

Abstract Background: Automated cell-level characterization of the tumor microenvironment (TME) at scale is key to data-driven immuno-oncology. Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered analysis of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) images scales and has recently been translated into diagnostics. However, robust TME analysis solely based on H&E data is bound by the stain's properties and by manual pathologist annotations, both in number and accuracy. In this study, we quantify the error introduced by pathologists' morphological assessment and mitigate this error by training AI-systems without manual pathologist annotations, using labels determined directly from IHC profiles. Methods: The work was carried out on 239 clinical NSCLC cases. CK-KL1, CD3+CD20, and Mum1 were used for defining carcinoma (CA), lymphocyte (LY), and plasma (PL) cells. For evaluation, representative regions were annotated by 3 trained pathologists. The workflow is based on co-registration of same-section H&E and IHC stained images with single cell precision. Cells were detected in H&E and labelled using rule-based algorithms that incorporated IHC information. This H&E data was used to train neural networks (NN). Results: (A) The inter-rater agreement of pathologists annotating on H&E is increased when information from registered IHC images is provided. (B) The concordance of pathologists on H&E-only compared to on H&E+IHC shows that pathologists miss or misclassify cells with a certain error. (C) NNs trained with IHC-based labels achieve similar performance for cell type classification on H&E as pathologists on H&E. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the value of combining histomorphological and IHC data for improved cell annotation. Our novel workflow provides a quantitative benchmark and facilitates training of accurate AI models for quantitative characterization of tumor and TME from H&E sections. The study tends to focus on the search for the historical roots of Islam in the 7th to 15th and 16th-17th centuries, and also the development of Islamic institutions in British contemporer.The historical roots of Islam in Britain have existed since the discovery of several coins with the words 'laa ilaaha illallah' belonging to the King of Central England, Offa of Mercia, who died in 796. The history records that this Anglo Saxon King had trade ties with the peoples Muslim Spain, France and North Africa. In addition, also found in the 9th century the words 'bismillah' by Kufi Arabic on Ballycottin Cross. Indeed, in the eighth century history has noted that trade between Britain and the Muslim nations has been established. In fact, in 817 Muhammad bin Musa al-Khawarizmi wrote the book Shurat al-Ardhi (World Map) which contains a picture of a number of places in England. In the 12th century, when the feud with Pope Innocent III, King John established a relationship with Muslim rulers in North Africa. Later, in the era of Henry II, Adelard of Bath, a private teacher of the King of England who had visited Syria and Muslim Spain, translated a number of books by Arab Muslim writers into Latin. The same is done by Danel of Marley and Michael Scouts who translated Aristotle's works from Arabic. In 1386 Chaucer wrote in his book prologue Canterbury of Tales, a book that says that on the way back to Canterbury from the holy land, Palestine, a number of pilgrims visit physicists and other experts such as al-Razi, Ibn Sina and Ibnu Rusyd. This study aimed to verify the effects of 12 weeks of swimming lessons implemented in age school Brazilian children’s aquatic skills and motor coordination. Fifty children aged 6 to 10 years old (mean ± SD: 8.34 ± 1.10 years), participated in one swimming lesson per week provided by the school curriculum. Each child was evaluated for their aquatic skills (17 skills checklist) and motor coordination (Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder test–KTK) before and after the swimming program. This study showed significant improvements in the sum of scores obtained in swimming skills evaluation (31.40 ± 12.89 vs. 46.90 ± 10.73 points, p < .01, d = 3.38). Large effects were found in water orientation and adjustment at the vertical position, breath control, horizontal buoyancy, body position at ventral, dorsal gliding and at longitudinal rotation, front and back somersaults, leg kicking with breath control, feet-first/head-first entries, autonomy in a deep pool and vertical buoyancy and immersion at deep water. The sum of scores in motor coordination assessment increased from 140.64 ± 41.94 to 175.20 ± 41.39 points (p < .01, d = 1.56). These results showed that 12 weeks of swimming practices, even conditioned by state school context (i.e., once a week), allowed Brazilian children aged 6-10 years old to increase aquatic skills and motor coordination. Resumen. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo verificar los efectos de las clases de natación durante un período de 12 semanas en las habilidades acuáticas y la coordinación motora en niños brasileños. Cincuenta niños entre los 6 y los 10 años de edad (media ± DE: 8.34 ± 1.10 años) participaron una vez por semana en una clase de natación ofrecida por el plan de estudios escolar. Cada niño fue evaluado en cuanto a sus habilidades acuáticas (lista de verificación de 17 habilidades) y coordinación motora (Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder test - KTK) antes y después del programa de natación. As Lesões por Esforço Repetitivo/Distúrbios Osteomusculares Relacionados ao Trabalho apareceram com maior incidência a partir do final dos anos 70, com destaque na década de 80. Atualmente um problema significativo entre trabalhadores nos mais diversos segmentos laborais, ocasionando elevado contingente de trabalhadores lesionados com prejuízo para saúde e consequentemente para produção, justificando a importância de estudos dessa temática. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o perfil de adoecimento por LER/DORT de usuários do Centro de Referência em Saúde do Trabalhador de uma cidade de médio porte no interior de São Paulo, entre o período de 2016 a 2017. A coleta de dados foi realizada a partir de um banco de dados informatizado, onde são registradas informações pessoais e profissionais dos usuários, bem como registro de acompanhamento e evolução do tratamento. Para a análise dos resultados foram aplicados cálculos de estatística descritiva. Os resultados revelaram prevalência da Síndrome do Manguito Rotador, seguida da Dor Lombar Baixa e Síndrome do Túnel do Carpo. Estas foram mais frequentes em mulheres, trabalhadoras domésticas, com predomínio de adoecimento acima de 40 anos de idade e em relação à evolução clínica houve predomínio de alta por melhora e elevada evasão do tratamento. Espera-se que os resultados ofereçam subsídios para a implantação de ações de prevenção e promoção da saúde, bem como de intervenção junto aos trabalhadores, além de nortear políticas públicas de atenção a essa população. AbstractRepetitive Strain Injury / Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders appeared with greater incidence from the late 1970s onwards, especially in the 1980s. Currently a significant problem among workers in the most diverse occupational segments, causing a high contingent of injured workers with injury for health and consequently for production, justifying the importance of studies of this theme. The aim of this study was to characterize the Repetitive Strain Injury / Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders profile of users of the Occupational Health Reference Center of a medium-sized city in the interior of São Paulo, from 2016 to 2017. Data collection was performed from a computerized database, where users' personal and professional information is recorded, as well as monitoring and treatment evolution records. For the analysis of the results, descriptive statistics calculations were applied. The results revealed a prevalence of rotator cuff syndrome, followed by low back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. These were more frequent in women, domestic workers, with a predominance of illness above 40 years of age and in relation to clinical evolution, there was a predominance of high for improvement and high treatment dropout. The results are expected to offer subsidies for the implementation of health prevention and promotion actions, as well as intervention with the workers, besides guiding public policies of attention to this population.Keywords: Occupational Diseases, Occupational Health, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation, Vocational ResumenLas lesiones por esfuerzo repetitivo / trastornos musculoesqueléticos relacionados con el trabajo aparecieron con mayor incidencia desde finales de los años setenta en adelante, especialmente en la década de 1980. Actualmente es un problema importante entre los trabajadores en los segmentos laborales más diversos, causando un alto contingente de trabajadores lesionados con lesiones. para la salud y, en consecuencia, para la producción, justificando la importancia de los estudios sobre este tema. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar el perfil de enfermedad lesiones por esfuerzo repetitivo / trastornos musculoesqueléticos relacionados con el trabajo de los usuarios del Centro de Referencia de Salud Ocupacional de una ciudad mediana en el interior de São Paulo, de 2016 a 2017. Se realizó la recolección de datos. de una base de datos computarizada, donde se registra la información personal y profesional de los usuarios, así como los registros de seguimiento y evolución del tratamiento. Para el análisis de los resultados, se aplicaron cálculos estadísticos descriptivos. Los resultados revelaron una prevalencia del síndrome del manguito rotador, seguido de dolor lumbar y síndrome del túnel carpiano. Estos fueron más frecuentes en mujeres, trabajadoras domésticas, con un predominio de enfermedades mayores de 40 años y en relación con la evolución clínica, hubo un predominio de alta para mejoría y alta deserción del tratamiento. The article examines some iconographic sources (two portraits, some photographs, a caricature) that can be traced back to Friedrich Schiller’s interpretation of Maria Stuarda, a famous pièce de resistance of Adelaide Ristori. The identification of the two paintings that the actress used to build the scenic image of the Scottish queen has allowed us to precisely trace the portrait that inspired her for the figurative conception of the character, moving away from the author’s indications. The comparison between the photographs and the caricature allows us to reconstruct still little studied aspects of the actress’s acting style. In the third scene of the third act of Schiller’s play, Adelaide Ristori was able to blend the Italian theatrical tradition with the noblest and most sophisticated features of her new and celebrated manner. The still photos that remained to us, probably conditioned by a precise will for self-representation exercised by the actress-marquise, faithfully render the dignified and composed aspect of her theatrical gestures and pass down the sublime trait, but they do not document the traces of her more energetic physical actions, which can be traced back to her being born into a family of actors. Such traits of realistic prosaicity are instead confirmed by some testimonies and may be found in the image of her vigorous stage action documented by the caricature.

During the third season of the national Australian Rules women’s competition (AFLW) in 2019, journalist and academic Kate O’Halloran hosted an AFLW themed radio show, Kick Like a Girl, on Melbourne’s independent radio station, Triple R. The show included a segment titled, Voices from the Stands, which was presented by writer and award-winning documentary maker, Kirby Fenwick. Fenwick interviewed fans at various AFLW matches during the season, asking what it was about the AFLW competition and women’s football that they loved. Recurring themes of fans highlighting feelings of now being considered welcome or safe at the game as well as sharing stories of having “come back” to football after being disillusioned or excluded by the culture of the men’s competition were common. These fan narratives highlight an emerging fan space in professional, women’s Australian Rules football that is counter to the men’s game.
