Substrate topography can have profound effects on initial bacterial adhesion during biofilm formation. We applied Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli cells onto periodically structured substrates with different structure dimensions, structure types and wetting properties. We found a strong dependence of cell retention on the structure dimensions of the applied substrates. Periodicities in the range of the cell size increased, whereas smaller periodicities decreased cell retention, independent of contact time (minutes to hours) and hydrophobicity. In order to study the role of cellular adhesion in the process of lymphatic metastasis, in vitro models were developed from isolated components of the lymphatic system. Cultures of rat lymphatic endothelial cells and of rat lymph node stromal cells were obtained. The endothelial cells expressed von Willebrand factor (vWF) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), and took up acetylated-low density lipoprotein (Ac-LDL). The stromal cells were composed mainly of Ac-LDL$(-),$ vWF$(-)$ cells which produced in vitro a reticular mesh of fibers, and expressed fibronectin, laminin and type IV collagen.

A spin-cast silicone membrane has been successfully bonded between two injection-molded microstructured plastic discs. This sandwich structure creates a useful platform for mass production of microfluidic systems, provided that the bonds are leakproof. The bonds were achieved by a silicon dioxide coating deposited on the plastic discs by evaporation. This investigation is concerned with the process and the result only, no theory is discussed.
