Our relationships to the environments that surround, sustain, and sometimes threaten us are fraught with emotion. And since, as neurologist Antonio Damasio has shown, cognition is directly linked to emotion, and emotion is linked to the feelings of the body, our physical environment influences not only how we feel, but also what we think. Importantly, this also holds true when we interact with artistic representations of such environments, as we find them in literature, film, and other media. For this reason, our emotions can take a rollercoaster ride when we read a book or watch a film. Typically, such emotions are evoked as we empathize with characters while also inhabiting emotionally the storyworlds that surround these characters and interact with them in various ways. Given this crucial interlinkage between environment, emotion, and environmental narrative in the widest sense, it is unsurprising that, from its inception, the study of literature and the environment has been interested in how ecologically oriented texts represent and provoke emotions in relation to the natural world. More recently, ecocritical scholars have started to develop a more sustained theoretical approach to exploring how affect and emotion function in environmentally oriented texts of all kinds. In this article, I will attempt to trace this development over time, briefly highlighting some of the most important texts and theoretical concepts in affective ecocriticism

Crop varieties interact with the environment, which affects their performance. It is imperative to know how the environment affects these crop varieties in order to choose carefully the optimal environment for growth. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is grown in varying environmental conditions including conventional and no-tillage under both irrigated and rainfed farming systems. Hence, genotype × environment × management interactions can affect yield stability. An experiment was conducted in north-western New South Wales, Australia, to investigate these interactions and to determine possible environment types to help focus crop improvement. Eight environments were considered and genotype plus genotype × environment interaction (GGE) biplots were generated to assess genotype stability and interactions with environment. Genotype and environment main effects and genotype × environment interactions (GEI) accounted for 12.6%, 66% and 12% of the total variation in yield, respectively. The most productive and stable environments were not tilled, irrespective of moisture status. The most stable and productive genotype was Sonali, closely followed by PBA Slasher and ICCV 96853. The eight test environments grouped into two environment types that differentiated on the basis of tillage regime. Moisture was not a determinant of site grouping.

Анотація:

The popular press has recently reported that managers of retail and service outlets are diffusing scents into their stores to create more positive environments and develop a competitive advantage. These efforts are occurring despite there being no scholarly research supporting the use of scent in store environments. The authors present a review of theoretically relevant work from environmental psychology and olfaction research and a study examining the effects of ambient scent in a simulated retail environment. In the reported study, the authors find a difference between evaluations of and behaviors in a scented store environment and those in an unscented store environment. Their findings provide guidelines for managers of retail and service outlets concerning the benefits of scenting store environments.

This study aims to analyze the effect of non-physical work environments, transformational leadership, and work motivation on the performance of ASN Ditjen ILMATE. The population is all ASN employees in the ASN Directorate General of ILMATE, totaling 230 employees with a sample of 147 employees. Data analysis using the SEM-PLS technique The results of the study found evidence that, partially, the non-physical work environment and transformational leadership had an effect on ASN work motivation. Non-physical work environments, transformational leadership, and work motivation partially affect ASN performance. Non- physical work environments affect ASN performance through work motivation. Transformational leadership affects ASN performance through work motivation.

Анотація:

This research was a study about the problem regarding unfavorable learning environments and stressful situations of Thai students during online studying amidst the COVID -19 situation and the solutions to improve the efficiency in learning and development for each age group. This research is an exploratory study of secondary to high school students in Thailand in 2021. The researcher interviewed 144 people in Thailand to obtain information regarding the problems, their effects, opinions, and possible solutions. They collected the data from the questionnaire and analyze the data to find more solutions to the problem. The data analyst used the frequency percentage statistic. The results showed that 1.) Most students want to go to school due to a more comfortable learning environment compared to sitting at home with an unconducive learning environment. Further, learning at school allows students to ask their teachers immediately and the school includes the activities which help support and develop different students 2.). Most of the students will understand if they study diligently, on the other hand, some answered that they will not understand even if they study diligently due to various environmental factors, such as the unconducive environment for learning, 3.) Students have reasons for their problems; this is one of the causes of stress in online learning. Most reasons cite unsuitable environments and unstable online learning systems that make studying boring and inconsistent instruction. 4.) Thai students in the Covid-19 situation concern about their academic performance as old grading standards are still in use, and many said they got low grades. 5.) Out of 144 students, 81 students stated that they have a suitable home environment for online learning; while 63 students do not have a suitable environment for learning due to various home factors like problems with internet instability and parents in the house who had them run errands during the course. In conclusion, the most common problem in online learning is problems with the learning environment. Keywords: Students, Learning, COVID-19, Thailand.

Technology acceptance is essential for technology success. However, individual users are known to differ in their tendency to adopt and interact with new technologies. Among the individual differences, personality has been shown to be a predictor of users’ beliefs about technology acceptance. Gamification, on the other hand, has been shown to be a good solution to improve students’ motivation and engagement while learning. Despite the growing interest in gamification, less research attention has been paid to the effect of personality, specifically based on the Five Factor model (FFM), on gamification acceptance in learning environments. Therefore, this study develops a model to elucidate how personality traits affect students’ acceptance of gamified learning environments and their continuance intention to use these environments. In particular, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used to examine the factors affecting students’ intentions to use a gamified learning environment. To test the research hypotheses, eighty-three students participated in this study, where structural equation modeling via Partial Least Squares (PLS) was performed. The obtained results showed that the research model, based on TAM and FFM, provides a comprehensive understanding of the behaviors related to the acceptance and intention to use gamified learning environments, as follows: (1) usefulness is the most influential factor toward intention to use the gamified learning environment; (2) unexpectedly, perceived ease of use has no significant effect on perceived usefulness and behavioral attitudes toward the gamified learning environment; (3) extraversion affects students’ perceived ease of use of the gamified learning environment; (4) neuroticism affects students’ perceived usefulness of the gamified learning environment; and, (5) Openness affects students’ behavioral attitudes toward using the gamified learning environment. This study can contribute to the Human–Computer Interaction field by providing researchers and practitioners with insights into how to motivate different students’ personality characteristics to continue using gamified learning environments for each personality trait.

Prior studies find that analysts tend to bias their forecasts upward in poor information environments and downward in rich information environments, consistent with attempts to curry favor with management. We find that investors anticipate this behavior by reducing their response to upward forecasts in poor information environments and downward forecasts in rich information environments. Using Hugon and Muslu’s measure of analyst conservatism as an ex ante indicator of individual analysts’ forecast bias tendencies, we show that the stronger return response they find to conservative analysts’ forecast revisions is restricted to poor information environments, where optimistic analyst bias is prevalent. Our results suggest that analysts pay a price in market influence when their forecasts reinforce analysts’ typical forecast bias for the firm’s information environment. Conversely, analysts whose forecasts conflict with the typical bias for the firm are rewarded with larger than average return responses.

The threat of stereotypes affects various psychological mechanisms, including affective/subjective, cognitive, and motivational ones, and can be present in gamified online educational environments in various ways. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether gender stereotypes in gamified virtual environments could affect the flow experience, self-handicapping behavior, and performance of Brazilian students. To achieve this, we experimented with 147 participants (60 males and 87 females) who were high school and higher education students from public and private institutions in the state of Alagoas, located in the northeastern region of Brazil. We randomly allocated the participants to three distinct virtual environments: a neutral environment, a male-stereotyped environment, and a female-stereotyped environment. We introduced the stereotype threat condition when the participant was in an environment that did not correspond to their gender. In contrast, the boost condition occurred when the environment corresponded to their gender. The results of this study indicate that the presence of gender stereotypes can influence both the flow experience and the self-handicapping behavior of Brazilian students in gamified virtual environments. We observed statistically significant differences that suggest that the implementation of stereotypes can influence the relationship between variables.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to extend the understanding of the characteristics of a classroom environment that impact students’ engagement in academics and therefore has the potential to positively impact student achievement scores. Data were collected through content analysis to analyze for reoccurring themes to assess how the characteristics of the classroom environment impact student’s achievement. Ten classrooms within the Kingsport City District were observed and analyzed for this study. Six research questions guided this study, and qualitative data were analyzed for reoccurring themes. Findings from this study suggest that implementing certain characteristics in to the classroom environment can positively impact students’ academic success. The development and construction of classroom environments should include such characteristics as positive discipline, well laid out and organized classrooms, accountable talks, collaborative groups, positive teacher student interaction, and learning targets. As a result of this research a recommendation for practice is that districts support the development of classrooms that would positively impact student’s achievement.

La Propagation d'Espérance (Expectation Propagation, EP) est une technique puissante utilisée en inférence statistique pour approximer des distributions de probabilités complexes par des distributions plus simples de la famille exponentielle, grâce à un appariement des moments. Des travaux récents ont démontré que son application à la conception de récepteurs numériques offre un compromis intéressant entre complexité et performance. En affinant de manière itérative les estimations de signal via une approche de passage de messages, l'EP fournit un cadre robuste pour relever des défis dans les systèmes de communication numérique, tels que l'interférence inter-symboles (ISI) dans les canaux à large bande. Dans cette thèse, un égaliseur linéaire auto-itératif en domaine fréquentiel basé sur l'EP (Frequency Domain Self-Iterated Linear Equalizer, FD-SILE) est étudié. Il est composé d'un égaliseur, d'un démappeur souple et d'un mappeur souple. Ces composantes exploitent le retour d'information de l'EP dans un processus d'auto-itération. Bien que le FD-SILE basé sur l'EP présente un compromis complexité-performance favorable, sa complexité computationnelle reste prohibitive pour des implémentations matérielles, notamment pour des constellations d'ordre élevé. Afin de réduire cette complexité, des simplifications analytiques sont introduites pour les processus de mappage et de démappage souples. Ces simplifications permettent une réduction significative de la complexité tout en préservant les performances en termes de taux d'erreurs binaires (Bit Error Rate, BER). Dans le cadre de cette thèse, des versions en virgule fixe des mappeurs et démappeurs souples simplifiés sont développées pour permettre la conception d'architectures. Différentes architectures sont conçues pour les schémas de modulation BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK et 16-QAM. Ces architectures sont ensuite optimisées par pipeline, ce qui réduit considérablement le nombre de cycles d'horloge par trame. Une architecture flexible et pipelinée, capable de changer dynamiquement de constellation à chaque trame, est ensuite conçue et implémentée sur un dispositif FPGA. La validation est effectuée à l'aide d'une configuration hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), qui intègre un environnement de simulation sur ordinateur avec l'architecture implémentée sur FPGA, déployée sur une plateforme Zynq MPSoC
Expectation Propagation (EP) is a powerful technique used in statistical inference to approximate complex probability distributions with simpler ones from the exponential family through moment matching. Recent works have demonstrated that its application in digital receiver design offers an attractive complexity-performance trade-off. By iteratively refining signal estimates via a message-passing approach, EP provides a robust framework for addressing challenges in digital communication systems, such as inter-symbol interference (ISI) in wideband channels. In this thesis, an EP-based Frequency Domain Self-Iterated Linear Equalizer (FD-SILE) is considered, comprising an equalizer, a soft demapper and a soft mapper. These components take advantage of EP for feedback within a self-iterating process. While the EP-based FD-SILE demonstrates favorable complexity-performance, its computational complexity remains prohibitive for hardware implementations, particularly for high-order constellations. In order to decrease this computational complexity, analytical simplifications are introduced for the soft mapping and demapping processes. These simplifications achieve substantial reductions in computational complexity while preserving bit error rate (BER) performance.As part of this thesis work, fixed-point versions of the simplified soft mapper and demapper are carried out to enable architecture design. Different architectures are designed for the modulation schemes of BPSK, QPSK, 8-PSK, and 16-QAM. These architectures are then optimized through pipelining, significantly reducing the number of clock cycles per frame. A flexible pipelined architecture, capable of dynamically switching constellations on a per-frame basis, is subsequently designed and implemented onto an FPGA device. Validation is conducted using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) configuration, which integrates a simulation environment on a computer with the FPGA-implemented architecture on a Zynq MPSoC platform

Many organizations use the internet to reach out to their customers and also offer many services through their websites. Organizations prefer usability study on their developed systems to compare their product/system with the competitors and also to find the difficulties, while real users work on the system. Usability helps organizations to know whether targeted users are able to use the developed system without any problems. Usability testing normally takes place in a controlled environment and conclusions are drawn based on the obtained results. But today’s world has entirely changed with the introduction of better technologies and the people are using products everywhere with the help of portable devices like smart phones, tablet pc devices, portable laptops etc. Many researches previously experimented to evaluate the noise effects on participant’s performance and then derived conclusions of its effects. This research is aimed to find the chances of the results of usability testing getting effected in noisy environment compared to controlled environment. Task-Based Usability testing technique was used to find the noise effects in terms of task success rate and task completion time and also, SUS (System Usability Scale) is used to calculate changes in user’s assessments. Total 30 participants had participated in this study and all the participants were divided into two groups each consisting of 15 participants. One of the groups has participated in usability testing on selected websites in noisy environment while another group in normal environment. This study produced two different results; first result proves the task success rate and task completion times were affected by the noisy environment and user’s performance was better in calm environment compared to noisy environment. Second result shows user’s assessment IS not affected in any environment. The above situations have been discussed in detail.

This thesis focuses on virtual restorative environments – specifically, the way that natural environments have been created in a virtual context to elicit beneficial effects on restoration and stress recovery. As the field of restorative environment research is mostly concerned with studying the environment itself, the interaction between participant and environment tends to consist of open exploration, and other ways to interact are often overlooked. The aim of this thesis was therefore to construct a virtual restorative environment with an additional possibility to interact, and to explore how the interaction is connected to a virtual environment’s perceived restorativeness. To gain deeper understanding about how different people perceived the virtual environments, the experiment was conducted using qualitative measures such as questionnaires, open questions and interviews. The results indicate that the perception of a virtual environment’s restorativeness is a very subjective matter, as the individual differences between the participants affected the way that they perceived the environments.

This study investigated the relationships among family environment, demographic measures, the decisions made by unintentionally pregnant adolescents regarding post-delivery plans (stay single, get married, adoption), and the certainty with which these decisions were made. The Information Sheet, Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981), and Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (Zuckerman & Lubin, 1965a) were administered to 17 5 pregnant adolescents, ages 14 through 22, who intended to carry their pregnancies to term. Pearson product-moment correlations and multiple regression analyses were utilized to assess the relationships between family environment and certainty of decision and between family environment and negative affect. Greater uncertainty was associated with nonwhite racial status and living with both natural parents or mother only. Higher levels of negative affect were related to lower levels of perceived family cohesion, independence, expressiveness, and intellectualcultural orientation. The demographic variables of age, trimester of pregnancy, and family constellation were also found to be useful in predicting levels of negative affect. Subjects who were older, further along in their pregnancies, and living with both natural parents or mother only tended to report greater negative affect. Findings of greater uncertainty and negative affect associated with living with the natural mother are consistent with previous reports of disturbed mother-daughter relationships among this population. Discriminant analysis revealed that subjects choosing adoption were more likely to be older and to be white than those choosing to keep the child. They also tended to perceive higher levels of expressiveness and independence in their families. Comparisons between the present sample and "normal" families revealed differences which were statistically significant, but quite small in terms of raw score units. Indeed, these groups may be more similar than has often been assumed. The implications of these findings for the delivery of services and for future research efforts in this area were discussed. More intensive assessment of family functioning is needed. Based upon present results, further investigation of the family constellation variable is warranted.

AbstractConcern for the environment impacts environmental sustainability and the continuation of human life. A conducive environment can be realized if humans manage the environment, both in work life and personal life. Voluntary behavior to care for the environment manifests the ability to control the setting. Evidence shows that human carelessness in managing the environment causes environmental damage and pollution. This research aims to analyze the factors that affect the environmental performance of the Cooperative and SME Office of East Java Province employees. Data set from 70 employees of the Cooperative and SME Office of East Java Province were used. Regression analysis and mediation hypothesis analysis determine factors that significantly affect environmental performance. Voluntary behavior that cares about the environment is primarily related to a person’s ability to balance work life and personal life. Similarly, performance in managing a good environment result from voluntary behavior that cares about the environment. The findings of this study may provide empirical evidence that the cause of a person’s ability to realize a good environment is due to concern for the environment and the ability to balance work life with the environment.

AbstractOil, gas, and other minerals contribute significantly to the growth of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, however their development always affects the environment. The GCC countries are therefore taking measures to ensure economic growth, job availability, social equality, and natural resource management by incorporating environmental considerations into economic policy and aspiring for green growth at the national and regional levels. With this in mind, this chapter explores various sustainability initiatives for environmental conservation in the GCC. This chapter focuses primarily on the national efforts of each of the GCC states to prevent and control hazards and to reduce the effects of environmental challenges (such as air pollution, climate change, oil spills, and declining quality of coastal and marine environments).

Анотація:

Different forms and combinations of degradation attacks cause the damage of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Among the most usual belong ingress of chlorides and carbonation that influence the quality of the concrete and also affect its ability to protect reinforcement. The resistance of concrete against the mentioned attacks is given also by other surrounding conditions, like temperature, mechanical load, etc. In this paper, experimental findings are presented focused on the investigation of the effect of three different degradation environments, namely freeze-thaw cycles, immersion in salt solution and placing in carbonation chamber, on concentration of chlorides and degree of carbonation in concrete profile. The degradation environments were varied in order to compare the effect of each environment separately and also the effect of combined environmental action.

The environmental situation around the world is deteriorating every day under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors. It affects people’s health negatively and leads to decreased life expectancy. The article examines the impact of the environment on human’s physical health and identifies the role of environmental factors in this process. The survey identifies the components of the environment that most significantly affect human health; the impact of the natural environment on sports activities in general and the human body in sports in urban settings is analyzed. The current state of atmospheric air and the possibility of conducting a full healthy lifestyle in modern realities are evaluated. The students’ opinion of the environmental impact on human health is being studied.

Development projects have a wider set of impacts than just direct project outputs. A hydropower dam, for example, produces electricity but also disrupts river flows and may affect biodiversity and the general aquatic environment. A new port development may affect coastal resources such as mangroves and coral reefs. Coal-fired power plants affect both the local and the global environments through emissions of ash and dust (affecting mostly the local environment) as well as greenhouse gases (affecting the global environment). Sewage and sanitation projects provide new services to consumers but also change the quantity and quality of wastewater released into the environment. An enhanced economic analysis allows this wider range of impacts -both benefits and costs- to be taken into account. This approach follows the IDB's operational directives (OP 703, Directives B.5 and B.9) and is explained in an IDB Technical Note IDB-TN-428 (Dixon, 2012). This paper builds upon existing analyses of four recent IDB projects to apply this approach. The projects selected for this study deal with the water sector and range in monetary value from US$9.5 million (Guyana) to US$246.5 million (Trinidad and Tobago), with Paraguay (US$20 million) and Uruguay (US$118.6 million) in between.

The Gonzaga Center for Climate, Society, and the Environment led a community effort to better understand how extreme heat affects different neighborhoods and different individuals by constructing maps of urban heat island and connecting them to demographic factors through a correlation analysis. This research reveals that extreme heat events affect not only the unhoused, but also many thousands of people across large segments of the Spokane community. Not all regions or demographics in Spokane are equally affected by extreme heat. Differences in green space and the built environment mean that some people are more likely to be in danger during future extreme heat events.

Turbomachinery that operates in a field environment, such as turbochargers utilized by the natural gas transmission industry, are subjected to environmental conditions that affect machine performance. For example, dust and oil in the atmosphere can deteriorate the machinery and as such lower operating efficiencies. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of dust ingestion on compressor performance so operators can make informed decisions on sizing filter media and overhaul timing. Better decision making will ultimately increase the performance and lower maintenance costs.

Effects vary, creating 'winners' and 'losers' among host community segments, often harming disadvantaged groups like women. Labour markets experience mixed impacts, with job competition balanced by increased demand. Prices may rise or fall, while business growth often benefits. Environmental pressures and health system demands typically increase, with security impacts remaining mixed and socially perceived. Social cohesion is contingent on economic conditions and inter-group relations.

Job quality, a well-known topic in workforce development circles, is an underutilized but useful lens with which to examine labor market conditions. The Aspen Institute (2020), a long-time advocate for job quality, defines it as “a range of attributes that drive worker experiences: wages, benefits, scheduling, legal rights, equity and inclusion, opportunity to build skills and advance, supportive work environment, and worker voice.” Given the record number of resignations and available job openings, especially in the lower-paid industry sectors, along with popular labor market narratives around the Great R’s (Resignation, Renegotiation, Reshuffle), I wonder to what extent job quality plays a role in the occupational mobility of workers. Occupational mobility includes all potential outcomes an individual has when holding a job. For instance, in addition to the option of changing to another occupation, an individual can remain in that occupation, become unemployed, or leave the labor force. Occupational mobility metrics are an appealing way to explore labor market conditions because they provide a dynamic perspective, while traditional metrics such as unemployment and labor force participation rates tend to be static observations.

Studies have shown that environmental factors affect driving behaviors. For instance, weather conditions and the presence of a passenger have been shown to significantly affect the speed of the driver. As one of the important measures of driving behavior is the gaze and head movements of the driver, such metrics can be potentially used towards understanding the effects of environmental factors on the driver’s behavior in real-time. In this study, using a naturalistic study platform, videos have been collected from six participants for more than four weeks of a fully naturalistic driving scenario. The videos of both the participants’ faces and roads have been cleaned and manually categorized depending on weather, road type, and passenger conditions. Facial videos have been analyzed using OpenFace to retrieve the gaze direction and head movements of the driver. Results, overall, suggest that the gaze direction and head movements of the driver are affected by a combination of environmental factors and individual differences. Specifically, results depict the distracting effect of the passenger on some individuals. In addition, it shows that highways and city streets are the cause for maximum distraction on the driver’s gaze.
