Declining vocabulary and poor comprehension of complex sentences are some depleting language skills faced by the elderly. As such, this study explored the cues that construct young people's understanding of effective communication within the older and young adult dyad. Qualitative data retrieved from open-ended questions were thematically analysed, and specific facets that contribute to understanding age-related differences were developed. The aim of this study was to explore what could be changed in the local community to enable those with dementia to live well. People with dementia and carers taking part in the IDEAL programme responded to open-ended questions. Responses from 1,172 people with dementia and 702 caregivers were analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes were identified: raising awareness, improving access to support services, providing social events and activities, and supporting people to engage in the community.

Canada’s population is aging rapidly, such that by 2031 it is estimated that one quarter of Canada’s population will be aged 65 or older (Statistics Canada December 15, 2006). It is argued that urban environments are often not adequately designed for older people and can impair their ability to live independently into their elder years (Harris 2004). Proper planning can help people age successfully in their community.
