Purpose – This paper explores how siblings act as agents of consumer socialisation within the dynamics of the family network. Design/methodology/approach – Key consumer socialisation literature is reviewed, highlighting the growing role that siblings play in the lives of contemporary children. The authors’ interpretive, exploratory study is introduced which captures the voices of children themselves through a series of in-depth interviews. Findings – A series of socialisation behaviours are documented, with children working in both positive and negative ways to develop the consumer skills of their siblings. A fourfold typology of sibling relationships is described, capturing the dynamic of sibling relationships and parental approaches to parenting vis-à-vis consumption. This typology is then used to present a typology of nascent child consumer identities that begin to emerge as a result of socialisation processes within the family setting. Research limitations/implications – The role siblings play in the process of consumer socialisation has potentially important implications in terms of the understanding of the socialisation process itself, and where/how children obtain product information. Scope exists to explore the role siblings play as agents of consumer socialisation across a wider variety of family types/sibling variables presented here (e.g. to explore how age/gender shapes the dynamics of sibling–sibling learning). Originality/value – Through adopting a networked approach to family life, the authors show how the wider family dynamic informs sibling–sibling relationships and resulting socialisation behaviours. The findings problematise the view that parents alone act as the main conduits of consumer learning within the family environment, highlighting how parent–child relationships, in turn, work to inform sibling–sibling socialisation behaviour and developing consumer identities.

This research investigates the socialisation agents older consumers use to learn about information and communication technologies (ICT). We surveyed 871 older consumers in Victoria, Australia, about whom they would most likely turn to for advice (i.e., their preferred socialisation agents) if they needed help using or fixing an ICT device. They were asked to identify the most and second most likely source of advice. Participants were also asked to assess the usefulness of the advice received from their preferred agents and to estimate their level of ICT knowledge. The findings reveal that older consumers tend to rely on younger family members. Still, the agency they receive from non-familial sources is essential when preparing for a digital consumer role. Surprisingly, ICT knowledge is determined by the socialisation agency received by older adults’ second advice option—which is less likely to be their own adult children. This research expands current knowledge about how older consumers perceive various ICT socialisation agents. Consumer socialisation theory suggests that socialisation agents impact how consumers function in the marketplace. Although the first choice of socialisation agent may be perceived as beneficial for older adults, the advice given does not relate to marketplace functioning regarding improved ICT knowledge.

Background and Purpose: Chinese women in Peninsular Malaysia exhibit a passive political culture. This is evidenced by the number of Chinese women in Parliament and Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN). Despite that Chinese community-based political parties have established a 30 per cent quota to empower the political participation of women, the target quota has yet to be achieved as of today. Therefore, the present study discussed the indicators that influence the political culture of Chinese women in Peninsular Malaysia. Among the important indicators that affect political culture is the political socialisation agents. Methodology: In this qualitative research design, data were collected using a semi-structured interview method. The Interviews were conducted with a total of ten participants, namely seven Chinese women political representatives, one Chinese women Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) activist, one academician, and one men politician who served in Peninsular Malaysia. The data obtained through interviews underwent a transcription process which was then coded and themed. Findings: The themes were divided into two categories, namely the internal political socialisation agents and the external political socialisation agents. Internal political socialisation agents consisted of education, economy, culture, religion, family, and gender, whereas external political socialisation agents consisted of NGOs/associations, political parties, and the community. A model, Political Socialisation Agent Model for Chinese women, based on the Intersectionality Dimension Theory was developed to illustrate the relationship between the internal and the external political socialisation agents that shape the political attitudes and behaviours of Chinese women. Contributions: The present study contributes to the advancement of knowledge on the political culture of Chinese women residing in Malaysia. The results of this study may be utilised to increase the awareness and participation of Chinese women in the political sphere of Peninsular Malaysia. Keywords: Chinese women, political culture, political socialisation, intersectionality. Cite as: Ramli, N. A., Ismail, H., & Kamalbatcha, Z. (2023). AbstractThis paper aims to put contemporary political socialisation research in perspective. It offers a rapid overview of the crisis of the subfield after the 1970s and then shifts attention to post-crisis studies. Beginning with child political socialisation, it raises four issues: the use of theoretical frameworks derived from child psychology; the need to reconnect political socialisation to the sociology of family; the benefits of renewing methods for understanding the world of child politics; and a new account of social inequality in the process of political socialisation. It then explores lifelong political socialisation and how it has developed around four research dynamics: the study of civic and political socialisation of school-age adolescents and young adults; the generational renewal; the socialising effects of political mobilisation; and the processes and agents of the secondary political socialisation of adults. The final section raises the major question of what is political in political socialisation.

The purpose of the study is aimed at determining the financial socialisation of accounting students at South African universities and the factors that influence financial socialisation. The research used statistical techniques such as the structural equation modelling methodology to identify financial socialisation influencers and regression analysis to analyse associations between financial socialisation and socio-demographic variables among 1582 students. The study's results indicate that financial socialisation agents such as relatives, friends, and social media have little impact on most students' financial decisions. The majority of accounting students are often found to be financially socialised by their immediate family members rather than peers or social media factors. The regression analysis results confirmed this observation, revealing a statistically significant association between the parents' level of education and the students' financial socialisation. This study recommends that financial socialisation can be greatly improved by raising parents' educational levels and instilling financial education in university students' curricula, especially in South Africa.

A PhD combines experiential learning of the research process with socialisation into the research community. Studying a PhD is a highly individual experience with each student seeking and receiving different types of support from different agents. In this paper we investigate the experiences of four PhD students at a Humanities faculty at a Thai university through a series of interviews. To account for the unique nature of each student’s experience, we use Individual Networks of Practice (INoPs) as the main method of analysis. The interviews were first analysed by adapting Sala-Bubaré and Castelló's (2016) model of socialisation, identifying the social agents and the content of the experience shared with each agent, and then constructing an INoP (Zappa-Hollman and Duff 2015) map to visually represent each student's social network. These INoPs served to guide a qualitative analysis of the salient issues in the interviews. The INoPs highlight the unique nature of each student's set of agents and experiences, but there are also commonalities across students showing that peers and faculty staff serve as key social agents.

The global apparel market is an increasingly desirable industry sector for many marketers. The apparel retail industry in South Africa has experienced significant growth since the year 2000. In 2009, South Africans spent approximately R57 million on apparel items (Statistics South Africa, 2009). On average, South Africans spend R600 or more per month on apparel, making the apparel industry a very lucrative market. Consumer socialisation is the process by which the youth gain the necessary skills and knowledge that enable them to function as consumers in the marketplace. Consumer socialisation highlights the sources of consumer influences or ‘socialisation agents’ that transfer norms, develop attitudes, motivations and behaviour to the learner. Consumer attitudes, behaviour and skills are acquired through socialisation agents such as parents (father, mother and guardian), peers (brothers, sisters and friends) and the mass media (newspaper, television, radio, magazines) The Generation Y cohort (defined as individuals born between 1986 and 2005) is described as the largest and most profitable consumer group for marketers. Generation Y is a lucrative and growing market segment, particularly for apparel retailers. Apparel includes clothing, shoes, jewellery and cosmetics. Those Generation Y members engaged in tertiary education represent an especially important segment given that tertiary education often translates into higher future earning potential and a higher social status within a community and among peers. The primary objective of this research study was to investigate Generation Y students’ attitudes towards the influence of socialisation agents’ on apparel purchasing intentions in South Africa. The target population used in this research study was defined as full-time Generation Y undergraduate students, aged between 18-24 years, who were enrolled at public higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa in 2013. The sampling frame comprised the 23 registered South African public HEIs. A non-probability judgement sample method was used to narrow this sampling frame down to two HEI campuses situated in the Gauteng Province. For this study, a convenience sample of 500 full-time Generation Y students who were registered at these two South African HEI campuses during 2013 was drawn. A self-administered questionnaire was used for the collection of primary data for this research study. Academic staff at each of the two HEIs were contacted and asked if they would assist with the distribution of the survey questionnaire to students during class. The attitude towards the influence of socialisation agents on apparel purchasing intentions was measured based on peers, parents and the media. The outcomes from this research study suggest that Generation Y students do not perceive the influence of socialisation agents (peers/parents/media) as being particularly positive. While there was a significant positive relationship between their perceptions concerning the influence of peers, parents and media on apparel purchasing, none of these socialisation agents were perceived as having a significant influence on the Generation Y students’ monthly apparel spending. In terms of gender differences, males perceived the peer influence to be more important while females perceived the parent influence to be more important. There was no significant difference between males and females concerning the importance of the media influence on apparel purchasing. The analysis of statistical information gathered from this study will be relevant to both marketing practitioners and academia in understanding Generation Y consumers’ attitudes towards the influence of socialisation agents (peers/parents/media) in apparel purchasing intentions.

This thesis aims to examine and analyse the department head's perspective on the onboarding process, as well as the new employees' experience of the onboarding process at a well- established Swedish grocery store. A semi-structured interview, as well as semi-structured focus group interviews were completed in order to gain an understanding of the onboarding process within the organisation. An analysis of the result presents an understanding of the complexities of the onboarding process that the organisation undergoes in comparison to three well- established models on the subject. The models were also used to form the focus group questions and also helped in determining seven themes to be analysed. The organisation garners a complex onboarding process that encompasses both formal and informal processes that aid the newcomer’s assimilation into the organisation. Despite this, there are areas for improvement. Furthermore, despite a functioning onboarding process, different agents have different understandings of when the onboarding process starts.

combining approaches to family language policy with a language socialization approach, the present thesis examines family interoctions in five bi/multilingual lronian families in Sweden. The foci of the thesis have emerged from viewing and analyzing video-recordings of the families' everyday interactions, interviews and observations conducted during two phases of fieldwork. The thesis explores family - parents' and children's - language practices and the ways they contribute to the construction, negotiation and instantiation of family language policies. Considering children's active role in family interactions, it explores parents' heritage language maintenance practices and children's responses to these practices. In addition, the thesis examinas siblings' contribution to familial language choices and practices. The thesis documents parental strategies aimed at heritage language maintenance and children's bi/multilingual development. Recurrent interactional practices - through which parents attempted to enforce a monolingual, heritage language, context for parent-child interactions - were explored (Study Il. Through such exchanges the parents positioned themselves as "experts", insisting on the child's compliance, whereas the child's (affectively aggravated) resistance was frequent, and the parents recurrently accommodated the child's language choices by terminating language instruction. Such language maintenance strategies at times resulted in explicit and implicit language negotiations, and the child's growing resistance cantributed to changes in parents' language practices over time (Study Il). Siblings' contribution to shaping the language practices and language environment of immigrant families was explored in Study 111. It shows that siblings corrected each other's language use and choices and provided language instruction (in Swedish, English and heritage languages) when language-related problems occurred. By predominantly using swedish, siblings contributed to language shift. The thesis shows how family members' language practices contribute to heritage language maintenance or language shift and to shaping family language policies.

The literature on organizational socialization in management has mainly focused on newcomers’ adjustment into stable organizations. Conversely, this study attempts to understand the socialization process of insiders in a context of organizational change. Built from managerial and sociological approaches of socialization at work and complementary concepts of role theory, the conceptual framework highlights the key dimensions of the process: contrast, role tension, organizational tactics/practices, proactive tactics/behaviors, socialization states. Conducted in the national French railway company (SNCF), a qualitative longitudinal study enriches the understanding of each dimension and their articulation through social mechanisms. From this research, six typical processes are identified leading to three behaviors of absorption, exploration or role determination. From a meta-level analysis, four collective trajectories are suggested, based on the continuity/discontinuity perceived of identity in a diachronic perspective. Managerial implications are proposed to the company and organizations experiencing similar socialization issues

In a context of diversification of family structures, this thesis begins by analyzing the impact of familial turning points on the political socialization of women. In addition, it provides an understanding of how these turning points impact the way women see themselves as agents of socialization for their children or stepchildren. This study is based on a twofold comparison in France: on the one side, an examination of three different family structures (nuclear families, single-parent families and stepfamilies) and, on the other side, a comparison of associative and non-associative contexts. A quantitative analysis of ERFI data provided by INED complements the use of several qualitative methods: an ethnographic study within three associations and an interview study carried out with 88 women, mothers in nuclear or single-parent families and stepfamilies. The results of this thesis show that family structures influence the political socialization process of women. Experiences of family blending, and even more those of separation, arouse the transformation of socialization among women. These transformations are marked by a change in their values regarding family and gender roles, their perception of justice as well as of familial and social policies. They finally affect women’s attitude toward the political offer. Family trajectory therefore impacts the way women see themselves as agents of socialization. The analysis demonstrates that family structure influences what women want to pass on to their children or stepchildren, the way they do it and their degree of intentionality

This thesis examines the influence of stages of internal development (measured in the consumer context) in children and adolescents, as well as surrounding cultural context (represented by family structure), on the relative influence of consumer socialisation agents (such as parents, peers and mass media). In total, 300 Indian children between the ages of 6-16 years completed a questionnaire that included both consumer development and consumer socialisation scales. As expected, the three stages of consumer development, which were empirically determined using 13 consumer development indicators, closely matched John’s (1999) conceptual descriptions of stages of consumer socialisation, i.e. Perceptual, Analytical and Reflective. Contrary to expectations, the study results suggested that the relative influence of consumer socialisation agents was able to predict a greater number of developments in the consumer abilities of children and adolescents, as compared to age-related maturation. This could be attributed to the moderating impact of cultural context (family structure) on the antecedents and predictors of consumer development in children and adolescents, namely, age-related maturation and consumer socialisation processes. Age-related maturation was found to be a significant predictor of the relative influence of consumer socialisation agents, especially comparing Adolescence to other age groups. This was confirmed for all the consumer socialisation processes studied, except children’s consumption autonomy. As expected, family structure also impacted significantly upon the relative influence of consumer socialisation agents, especially comparing Nuclear families to Extended types of families. This was confirmed with respect to consumer socialisation processes such as restriction of consumption, children’s consumption autonomy and extent of peer group influence. Further, family structure also had an additional impact on ‘relative influence’, due to its significant interaction with all the consumer socialisation processes, which resulted in ‘cultural’ or ‘contextual’ processes of consumer socialisation. Overall, children and adolescents were impacted by the relative influence of consumer socialisation agents; relative to both their age-related maturation and the family structure in which they are bought up. Although the results were generally consistent with literature and past research, it was suggested that the existing theory on children’s consumer development needs to be modified, taking into account the impact of cultural contexts such as family structure.

The job of CEO is rich and complex and the "number one" change, poorly understood, may have an impact on the socio-economic performance, strategy, policy and the organization of the company. Facilitate the arrival of new manager is an important issue for the survival and development of the organization, as well as its organizational socialization remains little studied. The first part explains the conceptual and methodological research, and presents lots of experiments of our assumptions and our tools. We use interviews with executives to define the business leadership and highlight the specifics CEO’s roles and skills. The specific relationship between the leader and its Governance is also studied. Its specific needs of organizational socialization are then demonstrated, particularly in relation to a buyer company and a "classic" employee. In the second part, the concept of organizational socialization is suitable for demanding and unique leader, through the concept of CEO’s Organizational Socialization. This model meets the needs of leader’s socialization, especially during integration, organizational socialization’s milestone. It consists of three types of recoveries: politico-strategic, organizational and managerial. The quality of these recoveries led to the quality of leader’s integration, reclassified strategic integration because of its strategic challenges. An analytical framework is proposed to allow both the new leader to better understand the organization that will lead, but also its own needs through organizational socialization variables and factors that compose it

This thesis explores socialization within the Al-Islah party, founded in 1990 and heir to the Yemeni Islamic movement, perceived as the Yemeni branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, whose internal socialization mechanisms shaping the identities and behaviors of its members remain understudied. Given the conflictual Yemeni context, exile is an essential variable to examine, particularly since the 2014 conflict, which led many Al-Islah members to seek refuge in Turkey, a country chosen for its ideological proximity to the Turkish regime. Turkey thus constitutes a field of study where a Yemeni diaspora is structured.Particular attention is paid to the Islahi youth, especially emerging intellectual and media actors. The study assumes the existence of two types of socialization marking a generational effect. It questions the dynamics of recruitment, the modalities of indoctrination, the resources mobilized to educate and condition members, as well as the frames of reference, values, and behaviors instilled by the party. The thesis also explores the counter-socialization approaches adopted by some members. The analysis sheds light on internal tensions, glass ceiling factors, and the disillusionment of young people in an unstable political context. The methodology relies on a qualitative approach combining around thirty interviews, including 18 life stories (including six women), as well as ethnographic observation conducted in a western district of Istanbul where a Yemeni community is concentrated. The results reveal a plurality of ideological references within Al-Islah, reflecting the diversity of its components since its founding. This diversity leads to a structural duality where the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood remains prevalent. Although similarities exist with the socialization practiced by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, notable differences arise due to distinct political contexts. The study highlights the complexity and sophistication of the Islahi socialization process, composed of multiple stages and adapting to geopolitical evolutions while maintaining a stable religious dimension. This socialization aims to produce a "homo islamicus," formed through a religious educational framework structured by a political party. Finally, this socialization is characterized by its immersive, intrusive, and possessive nature, making any definitive break difficult. However, it fits into an interactive logic where the member negotiates their place, especially when confronted with other paradigms. Individual experience, particularly migratory, and the 2011 Revolution, has favored a re-examination and identity transformation, but without completely erasing the initial ideological heritage. Thus, a "latent Brotherhood-ism" manifests in some members

Much is written down about generations at work in general media, managerial press and academic journals in connection with demographic stakes in postmodern societies. In most writings, generational effects are considered as a social phenomenon that imposes itself upon organizations, compelling them to adapt to Generation Y (and Z coming up) behaviors. This approach doesn’t take into account organizational socialization effects on newcomers. Building up on Joshi et al (2010, 2011) work, we bring together theoretical frameworks on generations and organizational socialization to empirically investigate organizational generations. Indeed, if generations are rooted in temporality, organizations have their own temporality, including founding events, trends and social reproduction modes. In this PhD dissertation, using action-research, we study the particular situation of ERDF (Electricité Réseau Distribution de France) which faces a massive generational renewal. We combine a qualitative pre-diagnosis, an ethnographic observation during 17 months and a survey (1182 respondents) to deeply understand the effects of this massive arrival. From a managerial point of view, we propose that the particular conditions that newcomers experiment at their entry in the company lead to a new organizational generation. We help the company to understand that this first experience of newcomers durably marks their attitudes at work, beyond Generation Y effects. From a theoretical point of view, we introduce the concept of organizational generational imprint as a distinctive mark of an organizational generation. We define the work conditions which mark the imprint; the mechanisms by which the imprint forms itself, underlying the part of role stress in them; and the antecedents that generate a new organizational generation. On the way, we reveal unanticipated effects of the renewal on insiders and organizational culture. Through our actions, we contribute to recognize the demanding effort required from insiders to integrate newcomers

AbstractThis chapter provides insights into the intractable ethico-political nature of ‘access’ in post-colonial, post-conflict higher education (HE), through the reflections of Black academics and women academics who have lived experience of the minority-majority transitions of academic communities in post-apartheid South Africa. To address the lack of ‘diversity’ of under-represented demographics within historically white institutions, those institutions who provided access to these hand-picked academics did so requiring that they undergo rigorous professional development and socialisation programmes for the purposes of assuring their quality. Critical discourse analyses were undertaken of the qualitative responses of these academics made in response to a questionnaire on this subject, which were then confirmed and deepened within small group discussions. In this chapter we discuss how their responses revealed: (1) the mis-educational reception of structural access for troubling homogeneous institutional cultures; (2) the risks encountered in the politics of belonging of an individual’s access for success; and (3) the problematic weight of transformative expectations when conditions mitigate against empowering agents access to challenge. Situated within an historical narrative of academic development and the national drives in that country for an HE sector ‘transformed’ from its historical legacies of injustice and inequality, the chapter highlights the implications of these three constructions of access for disrupting the machinations of the hidden macro- and meso-curricula of power and whiteness.

AbstractDigital technologies play an increasingly significant role in the everyday lives and culture of children and young people, but research and societal discussions often focus solely on the perceived risks and concerns associated with their use. This narrow focus does not recognise children’s agency in digital spaces. In this chapter, we address this gap by exploring the meaning children and young people attribute to their leisure-time use of digital technology, from their own perspective. Our study draws on interviews and digital diary data collected in Austria, Greece, Norway, Romania, and the United Kingdom. The findings highlight that children not only perceive digital technologies as a source of entertainment but also as a meaningful part of their leisure activities, enabling communication, socialisation, play, and learning. However, there appears to be a generational gap in the meaning attributed to leisure-time activities, as there is a discrepancy between children’s and parents’ perspectives. Consequently, parents impose restrictions on content and screen time, thereby limiting children’s agency to some extent. Nevertheless, children’s negotiations regarding screen time, content choices, and decisions about whom and what to engage with can be seen as their attempts to expand and assert their agency.

Abstract Socialisation of the doctoral candidate into a community of researchers has been identified as an important aspect of the doctoral process and key to the production of original and innovative research. Yet, access to research communities and learning networks can be difficult for non-traditional students, for example part-time, international and non-science-based doctoral candidates, compared to their full-time and science-based peers. Drawing on Actor-Network Theory and Psychosocial theories of Agency, the current Ph.D. research proposes a methodology (questionnaire and interview) to explore doctoral candidates’ experiences of interacting with the academic institution (face-to-face and online) and developing support networks as influencing doctoral progression and completion. This article will discuss the preliminary findings from the study, drawing on the experiences of a diverse body of participants (e.g. full-time, part-time and international students) within the university sector in Ireland. The findings from this study can provide insights to policymakers and practitioners on supporting learners within Higher Education in Europe, not just within the doctoral process, but at different stages within the Bologna Qualifications Framework.

Abstract In recent years, higher education institutions have been recognised as sites of reproduction of social, economic and health inequalities. The risk of perpetuating racial stratification in students has been identified as one of the means of reproducing inequalities. The award gap that minoritised ethnic students suffer from in both digital and face-to-face provision is an example of this. Exploring the existing interventions established to address the gap and their dynamics can help to understand what initiatives and mechanisms should be implemented in higher education institutions to start to avoid the above issues. This chapter presents a systematic literature review of the studies that evaluated interventions designed to reduce the ethnic minorities’ award gap in different higher education institutions. Findings point to the development of mechanisms such as the implementation of a safe space, the creation of collaboration, connection and socialisation, the formation of a sense of belonging and the transfer of agency towards students that lead to improvement of grades, completion and retention rates, and students’ well-being. However, these mechanisms come with costs and investments for institutions, particularly if the aim is to counter the systemic cultural reproduction of racial inequalities, develop effective EDIA policies and achieve a long-term sustainable change.

This is another theoretical chapter that generates a framework to thread through the context of Afghan policing. Theories related to a political economy approach to examine the interrelationship between bureaucratic agents and economic elites and the coping strategies of poorly waged public officials and police officers. This theoretical basis informs some aspects of the political and economic drivers of corruption. The political drivers specifically cover systemic corruption which is when corruption becomes institutionally embedded from the top to the lower levels. In addition, patronage, nepotism and ethnic favouritism forms a ‘moral economy’ to deter meritocratic recruitment. Moreover, state capture occurs when main parts of the state are infiltrated by narrow criminal and affiliated political interests for profit making, usually with illicit markets. The economic drivers are focused on corruption as a means of economic necessity, namely low pay, and opportunities to engage in corruption due to weak oversight or limited sanctions if detected for malpractice. The cultural drivers cover culture, motivation and the socialisation of behaviour within police forces and specific anti-corruption training that can help to mitigate police corruption.

This chapter synthesises the conceptual wisdom and empirical findings of existing research into the UK Parliament with the theoretical foundations of psychological studies to offer an integrated model for parliamentary political behaviour (IMPPB). The IMPPB unites research on ideology, party socialisation and institutional choice to offer a new blueprint for analysing politicians’ parliamentary behaviours. Data on MPs' basic values are then coupled with Hansard records to assess to extent of MPs’ political agency in a range of contexts of varying institutional constraint. The results show, in particular, that (a) elected representatives make important decisions based upon their own personality characteristics and that (b) this effect operates in flux with informal pressures exerted by external role alters and internal party structures. Preliminary analyses are used to set a new agenda for studies of parliamentary behaviour.

The identity crisis can be added to the long list of crises faced by individuals in today’s societies, having serious and not entirely known or anticipated long-term consequences for both the individual and the society. This paper analyses the process through which individuals construct their selfidentities and what is the role of socialisation in acquiring the culture, building social identities and gaining social status. At the same time, the paper presents some of the problems faced by the agents of socialisation in helping new members of society acquire a self-identity, define themselves and occupy social positions within the social structure. Not understanding the relationship between selfidentity, status and culture, and how status is “created”, can determine individuals to adopt maladaptive behaviours or adhere to harmful ideas, with destabilising potential both for society and for their own social identity and position in the groups they belong to.

Analysing the normative perceptions of citizenship in society - what is a good citizen–what are the civic virtues that influence political behaviour–attention is paid not only to what these perceptions are but also to the political socialisation process–when and how the views were formed. Traditionally, schools have been seen as one of the most important agents of political socialisation. This study aims to determine how the Latvian population describes the formation of their normative notinos of citizenship and how they recall the influence of schools in this area. Qualitative methods were used to conduct the research based on 30 in-depth interviews that were conducted in the first part of 2022. Participants were selected by ensuring that people of different ages, genders, and ethnicities, as well as citizens with migration experience, were represented. The results of the study show that not only the Soviet past and the different approaches in Latvian and minority schools regarding political issues but also the changing curriculum and the lack of common standards have influenced the lack of a common understanding in this area. The study shows that the population is not used to reflecting on these topics, which suggests that it is necessary to activate discussions not only in school but also in society as a whole - what are the political values on which they want to base the future of the country?

Aim/Purpose: In many OECD countries, emergency response relies on volunteers, and while emergency incidents are increasing, volunteer numbers are declining. Volunteer turnover occurs at various stages of the volunteering life cycle (i.e., recruitment, training, socialisation, performance, and retirement), the socialisation stage has the greatest impact on organisations, as it occurs after the allocation of resources and training, but before the investment is returned through volunteer performance. There is sparse literature exploring this stage. Background: Addressing the gap, this paper presents a model of volunteer retention, predicting acceptance, social-expulsion, or self-exclusion, based on social fit. Methodology: The model is based on an inductive examination of the processes of volunteer turnover during socialisation of emergency service volunteers. Using a grounded theory approach, focus groups and interviews were conducted with 157 volunteers across seven locations. Contribution: This model contributes to theory by categorising volunteer turnover according to the stages of the volunteering life cycle, and to practice by drawing attention to the need to consider social fit prior to investing in new volunteer training and understanding the role of leadership intervention pre- and post-training. Findings: The study identifies the processes of volunteer turnover and predicts that volunteers either stay or leave based on the level of their social fit. Recommendations for Practitioners: Strategies are developed to guide leaders on the best approaches to maintain and retain volunteer workers in Emergency Service agencies Recommendation for Researchers: The model contributes to theory by providing an empirically based description of the processes involved in volunteer retention and turnover and offers guidelines for increasing volunteer retention in emergency services and other volunteer organisations across Australia and around the world. Impact on Society: Increased retention benefits the emergency service organisation in terms of return on the investment of volunteer training, regarding sustainability of human resources, and in regard to increasing diversity among its volunteers. In turn, this retention also benefits volunteers, and the entire community, as it gains access to a greater number of emergency services providers. Future Research: Future research should focus on recreating this study in other countries and in different emergency service contexts.
