Background: The purpose of this research was to assess the dietary and physical activity habits of All Saints University College of Medicine students to determine if they were meeting the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines government’s dietary guidelines and to ascertain the prevalence of overweight and obesity among the students. Methods: Data were collected from the participants using a survey concerned with demographics, and self-assessment on dietary and physical activity habits. Descriptive statistics was used to report and analyse the data. Results: Study subjects consisted of 76 students. Eighty three percent of them were between the ages of 16 and 25 years. Sixty–one percent were female and 39% were male. The majority of the student respondents (76%) were aware of the importance of eating healthy and being physically active each day, and 50-66% of the respondents engaged in and enjoyed physical activity, achieved the recommended daily amount of vegetable intake, were at a normal body mass index (18.5-24.9 kg/m2) and reported satisfaction with their weight. However, majority (80%) of the respondents consumed fast food; about a third of them did not consume fruits nor exercise regularly, reporting lack of time, interest and self-discipline as major reasons. Conclusions: The results indicate that the majority of All Saints University Medical College students had high level of knowledge of overweight and obesity and were involved in some healthy behaviours that helped them achieve normal BMI. However, the poor nutritional and physical activity habits of many of the students could benefit from intervention programs to moderate the tendency for overweight and obesity in the student population.

In this paper, I discuss a humorous form of voicing called Brian Voice (BV) used by myself and my former roommates, all of whom are students at Brigham Young University and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bringing the tools and methods of linguistic anthropology together with the anthropology of morality (especially ordinary ethics), I demonstrate the ways in which my roommates and I use this voicing to simultaneously inhabit the two seemingly contradictory identities of, on the one hand, a reverent Mormon and, on the other, a modern cosmopolitan. BV facilitates this identity by enabling speakers to voice both irreverence and anti- cosmopolitanism without incurring the normal social consequences associated with those stances. I contend that BV accomplishes this mitigation of negative consequences through indexing ridiculousness and absurdity. By situating BV within its Mormon context, I demonstrate that in distancing speakers from both hyper-reverence and irreverence, BV entails a practical engagement with the ethics, principles, and ideals of both Mormon morality and cosmopolitan morality, thus allowing speakers to inhabit a simultaneously Mormon and cosmopolitan self.

Education tourism refers to a travel program to a location with the primary goal is to engage in learning activities directly associated with a tourist destination. The current study explores the practice of edutourism as implemented by Beruga’ Alam Institute which involved college students of English language education. This case study employed participant observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation to gain a deep understanding regarding the case under study. 13 participants consisting of 7 students of English language education, a program coordinator, 2 tour guides and the head of the institute took part in the interviews. Collected data were analyzed interactively to conclude the study. The findings of this study revealed that the concept of educational tourism practiced in Beruga’ Alam Institute reflected its five fundamental vision namely: a) well behaved; b) being insightful; c) being skillful; d) being self-reliant and; e) contribution. The promoted model of edutourism in Beruga’ Alam begins with meditation, followed by exploration, reflection and ended with a publication. These stages feature every edutour program. The edutour programs offered to college students include nature exploration, art and culture exploration, Kings and Saints (graveyards) visits, charity and social life exploration, staying with the locals, local figures visits and other programs. Students were also offered short courses like photography writing, cooking class, and public speaking during the tours. Finally, based on the participants’ reflection on their edutour experiences, all of them express positive views on the programs and were willing to participate in the future education tourism programs.

The article analyzes nineteen religious verses in Kiev poetics teaching manual Fons Castalius [Castalian source] (1685). It is chronologically the first textbook of poetry, which exactly belongs to the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and whose year of creating is not in doubt. Since the modern scientific description of the Ukrainian poetics teaching manuals not exist, the short description of the manuscript was made in the article. The poetics teaching manual consists of two roughly equal parts. The first one describes the general rhetorical information – on periods, amplification, epistles and chria. The religious poems are in the second part of the manual, that deals with the poetics proper, and illustrate first of all the small poetic forms. The spiritual poems constitute about a fifth part of all poetic examples. From the spiritual poetry, 16 verses are written in Latin and only three in Polish, mostly moral and didactic. The following thematic groups of religious poems are established: on God, Jesus Christ (5 verses); about the saints incl. the Virgin Mary (6); on the characters of Bible, the sacraments and religious attributes (5); the moral and didactic verses (3). The anonymous author of the Kiev poetics Fons Castalius (1685) has presented to the audience of his lectures the spiritual poetry on a variety of religious topics. Among the religious poems are works of the well-known poets and anonymous authors, popular works and the texts which are appearing for the first time. We find some of them in the later manuscripts of the Jesuit College in the Western Ukraine and the Kiev-Mohyla Academy.

Language games are often recognized as one of the important components when teaching and learning English, in a Second Language classroom. Conversely, in the traditional classroom setting, playing games is believed to be highly unproductive. Given that, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of language games as a grammar retention strategy for ESL learners. The study was conducted at All Saints’ College, Sri Lanka using a mixed methods research approach where the sample groups were experimented and observed in two settings: the traditional classroom and the game-based approach. For data collection, all three classes of grade six, with 30 students in each, were classified randomly as the experimental group and the two control groups. While the experimental group was exposed to the game, “The Board Race” when teaching irregular past tense, the control groups were taught the same without the game. According to the results which were achieved from the t-test, through a comparison of the mean scores of the pre-test and two post-tests, the experimental group exceeded the two control groups with higher mean values, during the immediate retention stage and the delayed retention stages, proving that the two teaching methods have different influences on grammar retention. The above results were further confirmed by the positive responses of the experimental group in terms of behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement. Thus, this study suggests the need to incorporate games with text-based instructions in the ESL classroom, which is helpful for the students to retain grammar, in the long term.

This article offers a stylistic analysis of the Marian altar from the church of the Redeemer and All Saints in Dobre Miasto in the voivodship of Warmia and Masuria. The altar was set up in 1426 as an altar for morning mass. It remains incomplete to this day: several Gothic figures were replaced by later pieces of sculpture, and the altar was provenance is also questionable of the centrally located sculpture of Mary and Child. The literature up to now has pointed out stylistic analogies with the altar in Pörschken (Nowo‑Moskowskoje), at present in the collection of the Castle Museum in Malbork, and with the altar from Sokolica (Falkenau), which is at present in the collection Museum of the Archdiocese of Warmia in Olsztyn. Stylistic analysis makes it possible to establish that the closest analogy to the Dobre Miasto altar is the altar from Pörschken, while the somewhat later retable from Sokolica has many features in common with the altar from Rauma (Finland), which was a Prussian export. It is, however, an open question as to the location of the Prussian provincial woodcarving workshop that probably produced the altars in Dobre Miasto and Pörschken, drawing on the at that time rather old‑fashioned tradition of figures of the Madonna on lions. The literaturę suggests Malbork or Gdańsk, but because of stylistic similarities to the Elbląg Apostolic College and the links of the Elbląg Rector Mikołaj Wulsack with Dobre Miasto, Elbląg, too, must be considered.

Lewis Gilbertson (1815–1896) was one of the most prominent Anglo-Catholic clergy of St David's' diocese. He became the first incumbent of the new church at Llangorwen just outside Aberystwyth, built by Matthew Davies Williams, eldest brother of the Tractarian poet Isaac Williams (1802–65). Gilbertson adopted ritualist practices and Tractarian theology, which later influenced the church he was to build in Elerch (also known as Bont Goch) where his father, William Cobb Gilbertson (1768–1854), had built his house in 1818. After a brief survey of the development of Tractarianism in Wales, the paper discusses the building of the church at Llangorwen, which had the first stone altar since the Reformation in the Diocese of St David's, before discussing Gibertson's ministry in the parish. From Llangorwen Gilbertson moved to Jesus College, Oxford where he served as vice-principal and where he became increasingly convinced of the need for a new church and parish for his home village. He had earlier built a National School in 1856 commissioning the well-known Gothic revival architect G. E. Street. For St Peter's church, completed in 1868, he turned to William Butterfield, who had built the Tractarian model church of All Saints', Margaret Street in London. Gilbertson, who appointed himself as first incumbent for a brief period, set the ritualist tone of the parish while at the same time ensuring regular Welsh-language services to attract villagers from what he called the 'broken shadow of practices of the primitive Church' of the Welsh Methodists. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of Gilbertson's later career before assessing the impact of Tractarianism in west Wales, especially the confident and idealistic vision of a return to the apostolic faith for all the people of Wales on which it was established.

AbstractThe cult of the Virgin Mary had a complicated history in Scotland during the sixteenth century, with historical, devotional and literary evidence indicating both widespread acceptance of the church's traditional practices and growing dissatisfaction with them, particularly in elite culture. Anti-Marian polemics entered Scottish Christianity through various sources, including the Lollards around Kyle, the prominent witness of Patrick Hamilton, the preaching of Thomas Guillaume and George Wishart, the theological climate at St Leonard's college in St Andrews, as well as a number of popular works.John Knox (1514–72) incorporated many of his contemporaries’ concerns in his own treatment of the question, being trained at St Andrews University and heavily influenced by Guillaume and Wishart. Knox considered the cult of Mary using the same tool that he used to analyse the cult of the saints in general, the mass, and liturgical ritual, contending that they could not be reconciled with his stringent doctrine of sola scriptura, in particular as read through the lens of Deuteronomy 12:32.Yet for all that Mary and her place in Christian life and devotion formed a major aspect of sixteenth-century Scottish religious praxis, Knox gave little attention to her, preferring to indicate her proper place in Christian theology by presenting a vision of Christianity which omitted her almost entirely. Knox does indirectly indicate what he considers to be the proper Christian attitude towards the Virgin, however, through his explication of sola scriptura and its implications for genuine religious practice as opposed to idolatry, and his understanding of 1 Timothy 2:5 and the unique mediation of Christ. Where Knox does directly address the Marian question, he expresses his rejection of her cult in far more restrained terms than readers of his polemics against the mass may expect; while he is firm and unequivocal in denying Mary's intercessory role and in uprooting Marian devotional practice, his rhetorical restraint points to the irreducible dignity of Mary in the scriptural texts. This article analyses the theology of Mary which Knox reveals in occasional comments scattered through his writings and attempts to place his ideas in their historical and theological context. By explicating the precise nature of Knox's objection to the cult of Mary, the article attempts to open the door for future Reformed–Catholic dialogue on the person of Mary and her place in the church of Christ.

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde visions "Benilde for all" by creating an inclusive academic environment that can accommodate all students, especially those with disabilities. Through the nature, activities, and facilities of Physical Education (PE) courses, students with disabilities in Antipolo Campus find PE courses a challenge. Thus, the study wants to determine the student's instructional needs and testing accommodations in taking PE and create syllabi that include activities and assessments that fit their needs. Using descriptive research, data were gathered from the identified students with disabilities from the academic year 2021 to 2022 through a validated questionnaire checklist. The research revealed that most of the student- respondents: (a) have physical disabilities; (b) strongly disagree that the existing PE activities were suited and designed for them; (c) agree that the Physical Education facilities meet their needs, and (d) strongly agree for PE instructional and testing accommodations. As a result, the researcher refined the PE course syllabi that are more inclusive by aligning them to the CHED requirements and accommodating students with disabilities.

The study sought to investigate the effects of using cooperative learning on female teacher trainees of the Colleges of Education in learning some selected topics in Integrated Science. The investigation also sought to determine whether the Cooperative Learning Approach enhances the attitude and motivation of the trainees towards learning of Integrated Science. The study was carried out at the St. Monica’s College of Education in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region. In all, 80 teacher trainees consisting of 40 each from control and experimental groups were purposively sampled to participate in the study. The teacher trainees in the experimental group were exposed to the Cooperative Learning Approach and the trainees in the control group were lectured during the period of the study. The results of the study showed that the cooperative learning strategy was very relevant and beneficial in helping the teacher trainees of the St. Monica’s College of Education to improve on their performance in, and attitudes towards, the teaching and learning of Integrated Science. It was therefore recommended among other things that the science teachers should endeavour to integrate cooperative learning into their routine methods of instruction in the teaching and learning of Integrated Science. The English Jesuit college, founded in 1593 at Saint-Omer because of increasing Elizabethan penal legislation against Catholics, soon became the largest post-Reformation Catholic school in the English-speaking world. This article analyses the organization of the school, with particular emphasis on education in drama and music. It was in the environment of this institution that the recently discovered Saint-Omer First Folio almost certainly had its first home, probably left behind following the flight of the English Jesuits and their students to Bruges in 1762, immediately prior to the expulsion of all members of the Society of Jesus from France.

College students are often considered as adult humans so that when learning science, the use of interesting media is not noticed. Quality science learning can form college students who have scientific literacy and high democratic attitudes which are very important in the 21st century. The solutions that can be used to solve these problems is the macromedia flash learning media. This study aims to determine: 1) the effect of macromedia flash on scientific literacy; 2) the influence of macromedia flash on democratic attitudes; 3) the effect of macromedia flash on scientific literacy and democratic attitudes of college students simultaneously. This study used a quasi experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The study population was all PGSD Semester IV students of Ahmad Dahlan University. Sampling with cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected by tests and questionnaires. Analysis of research data using t and manova test. Based on the results of the study obtained both t and manova tests, the significance value is smaller than 0.05, so it can be concluded that: 1) there is an effect of macromedia flash on scientific literacy; 2) there is an effect of macromedia flash on democratic attitudes; 3) there is an effect of macromedia flash on scientific literacy and democratic attitudes of college students simultaneously.

The Psychology Department at Saint Mary's College involves all faculty and students in the process of writing by requiring students to demonstrate an advanced writing proficiency within the major. Fulfillment of this requirement involves many paper-writing assignments that are evaluated by course instructors and outside readers. Hence, writing occupies a more important role in the major, and student writing is more consistently high in quality than before the requirement was instituted. In this article, I discuss the effects of this writing requirement on the Psychology Department's faculty and students.

This empirical study examined the relationship between Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality types and preferred teaching methods for 507 Saint Joseph’s College of Maine undergraduate students. The students completed two instruments: the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator®, Form M (Myers, McCaulley, Quenk, & Hammer, 1998), and a 27-item scale that measured preferred teaching methods in the classroom. Descriptive and inferential statistics indicated that the five most prominent personality types were ISFJ, ESFJ, ESFP, ENFP, and ISTJ. Sensing-Feeling (S-F) preference was the most common followed by Sensing-Judging (S-J) preference in the top five personality types. Across all MBTI dichotomies, the students indicated a preference for teaching methods that involved lecturer-student interaction, using some visual tools such as PowerPoint, and demonstrations and practice. The least preferred teaching methods involved unscheduled quizzes, lecture where the professor talks with no visuals, and library research using experiential activities. Significant differences were obtained between the MBTI dichotomies and preferred teaching methods. The results demonstrate the importance of faculty tailoring and adjusting their instruction to accommodate the needs of their students to increase student achievement, motivation, and engagement in their classroom.

Introduction. In the second half of the 1760s – the first half of the 1770s Ivan I. Betskoy implemented a far-reaching reform of Russian education. It appeared that the problems of two Russian universities had not been the key issues of the reform. Apparently, that was the reason why they were not previously considered as a part of the systemic all-European crisis in higher education, which had been caused by a need to secularize universities and inculcate national languages into them, as well as by the general development of sciences, especially physical and cameral ones. Methods and materials. The article for the first time analyzes the model of the Academy’s College created at the Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1770 to replace the Academy’s university that had ceased to exist in 1767. Based on the “Privileges and Statute of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences” (1770), the research proves that this document compiled by Vladimir G. Orlov was brought into action without any legislative approval. Analysis. According to the Orlov’s Statute, Academy’s College appeared at the Academy to reproduce scientists who represented science, but not liberal arts which coincided with the new trend of the Academy of Sciences. It was arranged according to the model common to all education institutions reformed under Ivan I. Betskoy. After completing the main course of study, students were renamed as élèves and assigned to particular academicians for the improvement in science. At the same time, they attended public science courses, which corresponded to the university program in science and since then were allowed to read not only in Latin and Russian (as in the Statute of 1747), but also in new European languages. Results. Hence, an alternative model of training scientific personnel, which meant a higher educational level, was created at the Academy of Sciences.

The origin of the Saint-Joseph University of Beirut, or USJ, dates back to the Seminar of Ghazir founded by the Jesuit Fathers in 1843. The College of Ghazir, established with the intention of training the local Maronite clergy, was transferred to Beirut in 1875. This centre for higher studies was named Saint-Joseph University. In his audience of 25 February 1881, Pope Leo XIII conferred the title of Pontifical University on the USJ.This article deals with the history of the USJ, the first great French-speaking Jesuit institution in the area which, at the time, bore the name of “Syria”. (The term Syria is used henceforth to represent the geographical entity of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which includes Syria and Lebanon of the present.) The underlying reasons for the creation of Saint-Joseph University of Beirut have to do with its being located in a province of the Ottoman Empire coveted by the future mandatory power, France. By the 1870s, the Ottoman Empire was being preserved chiefly by the competition between the European powers, all of whom wanted chunks of it. The Ottoman territory, like the territory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, encompassed a great many ethnic groups whose own nationalism was also stirring. Under Ottoman rule, the region of the Levant developed economic and religious ties with Europe. Open to the West, it became a hotbed of political strife between various foreign nations including France, Russia and Britain. These powerful countries assumed the protection of certain ethnic and religious groups, with France supporting the Christian Maronites and Britain supporting the Druzes.

The latter has seen 60 years come and go, and with these years, many highlights, lowlights, and colleagues who have gone before us. Red and green are also colors that mark a 35th anniversary with coral and jade, both regarded as precious gems from antiquity. Corallium rubrum (red coral) “combined myth and magic,” as “its bright red color fascinated people in the East and West alike.”2 It has been regarded as the “blood of Medusa, soft and diaphanous under water, as hard as stone in the air,” or a procreative “tree of blood” that “link(ed) with the divine and the supernatural.”2 Green jade, “the Emperor’s Stone,” has been mined and worked in China since prehistoric times, eventually becoming the “royal gem.”3 Red coral, green jade – precious stones on the 35th year of the Philippine Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Coral red, jade green – precious colors that reflect our noble profession. Red and green are also the colors of Christmas, and their use may be traced back to the “spatial and spiritual border marked by rood screens” in 14th to 16th century medieval churches, “whose symbolism may have carried over to the temporal boundary between the end of one year and the beginning of the next.”4 These elaborately designed dividers featured edifying illustrations of saints and holy scenes in multicolored splendor, but were predominantly green and red. “Iron was one source of red pigment, and copper a source of green pigment, that colored the screens” and because “metallurgy was determined by astronomy,” also closely associated were “Iron with Mars, the masculine, war, and fire” and “Copper with Venus, the feminine, love and water.”4 Hence, the colors people encountered held multiple planes of meaning for them, as they celebrated another year over, a new one begun. Today, there is much to be thankful for, and much more to remain open to. Our journal has maintained a respected position among its peers, and is ready to move forward. We hope that this further concretizes our response to the Manila Declaration on the Availability and Use of health Research Information6 and eventually qualifies us for inclusion in the Directory of Open Access Journals.7 In support of this, we conducted a Basic Medical Writing Workshop for authors last March 19, 2016 and a two-day Research Technical Review Workshop for reviewers last April 29-30 hosted by the PSOHNS, and plan to continue doing so. We are seriously negotiating for migration from our current online platform to one that will better serve our needs, and those of our readers. We will soon activate our social media presence as well. Indeed, we all are yin and yang, you and I, red coral and green jade. We draw blood, and apply herbal poultices. We swim with the flow, yet solidly stand our ground. We don gay apparel of coral red and jade green, and merrily yet solemnly celebrate. Mabuhay!

Data acquired from several flights of a custom-fabricated Hexacopter Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) with composite structure (carbon fiber arms and central hub) and composite (carbon fiber) propellers are described in this article. The Hexacopter was assembled from a commercially available kit (Tarot 690) and flown in manual and autonomous modes. Takeoffs and landings were under manual control and the bulk of the flight tests was conducted with the Hexacopter in a “position hold” mode. All flights were flown within the UAS flight cage at Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at Saint Louis University for approximately 5 min each. Several failure conditions (different types, artificially induced) on the composite (carbon fiber) propellers were tested, including failures on up to two propellers. The dataset described in this article contains flight data from the onboard flight controller (Pixhawk) as well as three accelerometers, each with three axes, mounted on the arms of the Hexacopter UAS. The data are included as supplemental material.

Background. Temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is a gradually developing pathological condition manifested by a limited mouth opening. It can result in an extremely disabling deformity that may affect mastication, swallowing, speech, oral hygiene, and facial cosmetic appearance. The present study aimed to determine the pattern of TMJA at St. Paul’s Hospital millennium medical college (SPHMMC), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods. A retrospective descriptive study design was conducted at SPHMMC. All medical records of patients with the diagnosis of TMJA that visited the Maxillofacial Surgery unit from September 2010 through August 2019 were reviewed. Sociodemographic and clinical data including age, sex, place of residency, duration of TMJA cases, etiology, clinical presentations, imaging results, type of surgical operation, and complications after surgery were collected and analyzed using IBM SPSS software version 20 for Windows (Armonk, NY, USA: IBM Corp) computer program. Results. A total of 130 patients’ medical records were reviewed. Out of this, 95 were included in the study. Forty-two (44.2%) of the TMJA cases were males, while the remaining 53 (55.8%) were females with a male to female ratio of 0.79 : 1. 20–29-year-old patients were the most affected, 36 (37.9%), followed by the 30 to 39 years age group, 33 (34.7%). Trauma (77.9%) was identified as the most common cause of TMJA. Notably, bilateral ankylosis (72.6%) was more common than unilateral (27.3%), and micrognathia was the most common (23.0%) deformity observed. The majority 52 (54.7%) of TMJA patients were treated with gap arthroplasty. Conclusions. TMJA was predominant among females than their male counterparts. Of note, 20–29-year-old patients were the most affected group. The majority of TMJA cases were treated by gap arthroplasty with almost no postoperative complications. Early detection and intervention to release the ankylosed joint is needed to improve patients’ quality of life.

Background The health of individuals is not only the absence of disease checked medically, but also encompasses social and psychological aspects. Any departure from the state of physiological, psychological, or social well-being was affected by different factors. However, all contributory factors were not equally responsible for affecting disease. This study was undertaken as a search for the relative effects of sociocultural and individual behavioral factors contributing to acute and chronic gastritis patients visiting Saint Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC). Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out on 364 patients visited SPHMMC in the study. Primary data were collected through an interview schedule tool with an exit approach by validating questions pertaining to sociocultural and individual behavioral factors. The status of gastritis was measured as whether patients had Helicobacter Pylori infection, signs and symptoms indicated gastritis that occurred, and persisted for less than a month, greater than a month, or none of the signs and symptoms. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and multivariable ordinal logistic regression model were used to identify the predictors of gastritis severity. P-value ≤ 0.05 was declared as an indicator of statistically significant. Results The prevalence of gastritis in the study area was 78.8%. Specifically, 48.9% and 29.9% had acute and chronic gastritis, respectively. The study found that low income and taking medicinal drugs was slightly significantly contributed to higher gastritis status; however, being younger age was slightly significantly contributed to lower gastritis status. Furthermore, the results indicated that eating spiced foods (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 1.508; 95% CI: 1.046, 2.174), lack of physical exercise regularly (AOR = 1.780; 95% CI: 1.001, 3.168), stress (AOR = 2.168; 95% CI: 1.379, 3.4066), and substance use (AOR = 1.478; 95% CI: 1.093, 1.999) were significantly contributed to higher gastritis status. Conclusions The findings suggested that women should take enough rest and sleep well, men refrain from involvement in any risky behaviors, young people and those who earn low income per month should equip with knowledge and understanding on how to practice good health behaviors, eating foods on time, avoiding eating spiced food frequently, doing physical exercise regularly, and taking medicinal drugs according to physician advice are recommended.

Although there is a wealth of studies on the role of virtual reality (VR) technology in language acquisition, little research has been done on the utilization of virtual reality mobile applications in English language acquisition, especially in developing oral presentation skills. The main purpose of this case study is to investigate the usefulness of VirtualSpeech, which is a virtual reality mobile application, as a preparation tool for oral presentations via the perceptions of international students and their instructor. The participants are five Academic English Program (AEP) students and their English language instructor at Saint Michael’s College. Qualitative analyses were performed on data collected from: (1) learning logs that were shared between the students and the researcher, (2) surveys that were sent to the students and their instructor, (3) one-to-one interviews with the students, and (4) the researcher’s fieldnotes of the students’ oral presentation performances. The results of the study show that all of the participants recommend using VirtualSpeech as a tool to prepare for oral presentations. Most of the students reported higher confidence levels while speaking English after their use of VirtualSpeech. Thus, this case study can be considered as a contribution to the research on VR mobile applications in English language acquisition.

Over the centuries, exercising authority in the Catholic Church had been generating many doubts and problems. The extreme understanding the Pope’s role as an absolute monarch who independently decides about all dimensions of the Church has supplanted with time the known from the Apostle’s time communal management of the Mystical body of Christ. Just the Second Vatican Council and the last few popes noticed this particular problem. And one of the given solutions was the necessity of the return to the former way of exercising power by the college of bishops united around the Saint Peter’s Successor. Synods whose provisions would be presented to the Bishop of Rome for possible corrections and acceptance could again become a tool of power. By the analysis of the patrology research results, the history of the Catholic Church and dogmatic theology as well as sources and the subject literature it was possible to answer the question what synodality is in general, where does it draw its foundations and what is its role in building of the Kingdom of God. It was also possible to outline the perspective of the further Church development in an increasingly globalised world. The reflection on the historical formation of a proper understanding of collegiality and primacy proved helpful in understanding the goals behind the ”decentralization” of power in the Church postulated today by Pope Francis.

This article describes the design, fabrication, and flight test evaluation of a morphing geometry quadcopter capable of changing its intersection angle in-flight. The experiments were conducted at the Aircraft Computational and Resource Aware Fault Tolerance (AirCRAFT) Lab, Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO. The flight test matrix included flights in a “Figure-8” trajectory in two different morphing configurations (21° and 27°), as well as the nominal geometry configuration, two different flight velocities (1.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s), two different number of waypoints, and in three planes—horizontal, inclined, and double inclined. All the experiments were conducted using standard, off-the-shelf flight controller (Pixhawk) and autopilot firmware. Simulations of the morphed geometry indicate a reduction in pitch damping (42% for 21° morphing and 57.3% for 27° morphing) and roll damping (63.5% for 21° morphing and 65% for 27° morphing). Flight tests also demonstrated that the dynamic stability in roll and pitch dynamics were reduced, but the quadcopter was still stable under morphed geometry conditions. Morphed geometry also has an effect on the flight performance—with a higher number of waypoints (30) and higher velocity (2.5 m/s), the roll dynamics performed better as compared to the lower waypoints and lower velocity condition. The yaw dynamics remained consistent through all the flight conditions, and were not significantly affected by asymmetrical morphing of the quadcopter geometry. We also determined that higher waypoint and flight velocity conditions led to a small performance improvement in tracking the desired trajectory as well.

Background Cardiovascular diseases(CVD) remain the leading cause of death in the world and over 80% of all cardiovascular-related deaths occur in low and middle income countries. Ethiopia is in epidemiologic transition from predominantly infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases and the CVD is a major public health challenge. Methods The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and spectrum of cardiovascular admission and its outcomes among medical patients admitted to both Medical Ward and ICU of St. Paul Teaching Hospital from 1st of Jan 2020 to 1st of Jan 2021. Results Out of 1,165 annual medical admissions, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases(CVD) was 30.3%. About 60%(212) of patients had advanced congestive heart failure of diverse causes. Hypertensive heart disease (HHD) was the next predominant diagnosis (41%(146)), and also the leading cause of cardiac diseases followed by rheumatic valvular heart disease(RVHD) (18%(64)) and Ischemic heart disease (IHD) (12.2%(43)), respectively. Yong age, rural residence and female sex were associated with RVHD(p = 0.001). Stroke also accounted for 20%(70) of CVD admission (hemorrhagic stroke-17% Vs Ischemic stroke-83%). Hypertension was the predominate risk factor for CVD and present in 46.7%(168) of patients. The mean hospital stay was 12days and in-hospital mortality rate was 24.3% with septic shock being the commonest immediate cause of death followed by fatal arrhythmia, brain herniation, and massive PTE. Conclusion Cardiovascular diseases were common in the study area causing significant morbidity and mortality. Therefore, comprehensive approach is imperative to timely screen for cardiovascular risk reduction, disease control and complication prevention. Strategies should also be designed to increase public awareness regarding the cardiovascular risk reduction, drug adherence, and possible complications.

Abstract Objectives To determine if there were relationships between biomarkers of thirst, hunger, perceived thirst and perceived hunger in relation to time and carbonated beverage consumption. Methods Participants (males n = 14, females n = 15) aged 23–65, had a BMI < 30 kg/m2, and no reported chronic disease. Participants completed six data collections, arriving four hours fasted and consuming one of six randomized beverages (water, carbonated-no flavor [CNF], carbonated lime flavor [CL], degassed lime flavor [DL], carbonated lime flavor with aspartame [CLS], and degassed lime flavor with aspartame [DLS]). Blood was collected via finger stick at 0 min (baseline), followed by beverage consumption, and again at 10 and 45 min. post consumption. Perceived hunger and thirst were measured by visual analog scale. Acylated ghrelin and copeptin concentrations were assessed by ELISA assay. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to determine relationships. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine differences in ghrelin response. Results Perceived hunger scores differed by time (P < 0.0001) but not by beverage (P > 0.05) and there was no interaction. However, acylated ghrelin concentration did not differ by beverage or time (P > 0.05). Acylated ghrelin overall was 86.25 ± 92.30 pg/mL (mean ± SD). There was no relationship between perceived hunger and acylated ghrelin concentration at any time point or beverage (P > 0.05). Adjusting for gender or BMI had no impact. Perceived thirst differed by time (P < 0.0001) but not by beverage (P > 0.05). Copeptin concentrations are currently being analyzed via ELISA assay. Preliminary results for copeptin concentrations from participants consuming water and CNF did not differ by beverage or time. The average copeptin concentration measured from participants for these two beverages was 4.5 ± 4.0 ng/mL. After all samples are analyzed for copeptin, correlation will be run to determine if there is any relationship between copeptin, ghrelin, and perceived hunger and thirst. Conclusions Perceived hunger and thirst changed over time, regardless of beverage type. However, biomarker concentrations were not related to those changes. Perception of satiety may be influenced by other factors other than physiological signals. Funding Sources Funded by the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University Faculty Development Grant.

Also, there is still less study conducted in Malaysia to assess COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among pregnant women. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rate among pregnant women in Hospital USM. Initially, 367 respondents estimated using Raosoft Software but only 254 were recruited using simple random sampling method. The link of the questionnaire was given through a WhatsApp platform. The questionnaire used were adapted from Goncu Ayhan [4] consists of three parts: sociodemographic data, acceptance rates of COVID-19 vaccine and the reasons for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine. The questionnaire was translated to Bahasa Malaysia, checked by the Language Unit USM, and validated by the experts, three nursing lecturers. The Cronbach Alpha result from the pilot test was 0.744. The data were analysed using IBM SPSS system version 26.0 and the significant level (α value) was set at 5% for all statistical analyses. All null hypotheses will be rejected if (p<0.05). The Descriptive Analysis test and the Pearson Chi-Square test were used to analyse the data. Both Human Research Ethics Committee USM and Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department in Hospital USM have approved this study. No conflict of interest in the study. A total of 254 pregnant women, most of them being 198 were aged 20 to 35, 246 were Malays, 180 respondents with college/university education, and 110 housewives. The 68 prevalence of participants' household incomes ranged from RM1000 to RM1999 and RM4000-RM4999, and their gravida and parity are primarily at 2-3 times, with the majority occurring between 20 and 30 weeks of gestation (Table 1). This study included only 58 pregnant women who had comorbidities during their pregnancy. The results revealed pregnant women in Hospital USM had moderate acceptance of COVID-19 (M=70.00, SD=14.629) with a minimal percentage of 55% and a maximal percentage of 82%. It was revealed that 174 (68.5%) showed moderate acceptance while 42 (16.5%) showed high acceptance. Meanwhile, only 38 (15%) indicate low acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine. The main reasons for them to refuse the vaccine were lack of data on the safety of the COVID-19 vaccination in pregnant women, they believed that if they are sick, both mother and baby will not encounter any negative effects, and some of the family members were hesitant to be vaccinated. This study also examined the correlation between the COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rate and sociodemographic factors using Pearson's Chi- Square test. There was a significant correlation between age, educational level, career, household income, gravida, and parity with the COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rates (p<0.05). Yet, there was no significant correlation between ethnicity, gestational age, or comorbidities with the acceptance rate of the COVID-19 vaccine. In conclusion, the acceptance rate of the COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant women needs to be increased to reduce the risk of worse complications if contracting the COVID-19 disease. Health education regarding the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine can be delivered during every antenatal visit. Since this study was conducted in hospital settings which include clinics, the pregnant women shall be familiar with the updated regulations of the health systems. This benefits the nurses to increase their efforts for pregnant women to accept those two doses followed by taking the booster willingly. If this succeeds, the risk of them contracting the coronavirus disease and getting complications from it will be eliminated.

Introduction. Uterine myoma occurs in 20-50% of reproductive age women. Uterine myomas may be associated with 5-10% of cases of infertility, but it is the sole cause or factor in only 2-3% of all infertility cases. Myomectomy is surgery done to remove myoma regardless of the methods. Objective. To assess impact of myomectomy on pregnancy rate and associated factors among reproductive age women who had myomectomy at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, in Addis Ababa. Methodology. Hospital-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to determine pregnancy rate after myomectomy and its associated factors. Patients who had myomectomy in SPHMMC from September 2012 to September 2017 were enrolled. Information was retrieved from hospital records and phone interviews with the patients. The strength of statistical association was measured by adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Statistical significance was declared at p value < 0.05. Result. Among 180 females participated in this study, 52.2% got pregnant after myomectomy. The result showed that females with age > 35 years were 0.31 times less likely to get pregnant after surgery than those ages 20-25 years [ AOR = 0.31 (95% CI: 0.29-0.54)]. People with no infertility before surgery were 1.19 times more likely to be pregnant after surgery than those with unexplained infertility before the surgery [ AOR = 1.19 (95% CI: 1.06-1.57)]. People with two uterine incisions were 0.06 times less likely [ AOR = 0.06 (95% CI: 0.043-0.51)] while those with three or more than three incisions were 0.02 times less likely [ AOR = 0.02 (95% CI: 0.002-0.22)] to get pregnant compared with those with one incision on uterine wall. Conclusion. Age, number of incision, and infertility before surgery were significantly associated with rate of pregnancy after myomectomy.

When he arrived in France in the summer of 1631 Smith began to give all the help he could to the French writers who had taken up his cause. In doing so he put himself in a very delicate position as a member of Richelieu’s household for he was exacerbating the dissensions in the French Church that the Cardinal was intent upon healing because they posed a threat to national unity. Moreover, the writer to whom Smith chiefly looked for support, the Abbé de Saint-Cyran, was soon to become, for reasons partly political and partly doctrinal, the object of Richelieu’s implacable hostility. Smith had to proceed with great caution if he were not to lose the extraordinary advantages that the Cardinal’s patronage brought him. I propose now to follow the controversy as it developed in France during the 1630s, illustrating Smith’s rôle in it mainly from his private correspondence preserved among the papers of the English secular clergy in the archives of the Archdiocese of Westminster. The dossier is far from complete but enough has survived to allow us to trace with reasonable clarity moves that would otherwise have been totally obscure. The greater part of it consists of letters from Smith to the clergy’s Agent at Rome, Peter Fitton, between 1631 and 1634 (after which there is a gap in this series), and from Smith to the Secretary of the clergy in London, John Southcote, from 1631 until the latter’s death in 1637. There are also a number of letters from Southcote to Smith and to Fitton between 1631 and 1637, and a few to Smith from other members of the clergy, in particular Anthony Champney, formerly Vice-President of the English College at Douai and now chaplain to the English Benedictine nuns at Brussels. After 1637 the correspondence still extant becomes very sparse.

In 1994, Sung Joo International was an international distributor of premium and luxury fashion brands in Korea. During that time, Sung Joo International successfully built partnerships with designers such as Gucci, Sonia Rykiel, Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) and Mode Creations Munich (MCM) until 1999. Due to the premillennial global financial crisis, Sung Joo International strategically terminated all their international distribution agreements in 1999 — except their agreement with MCM. The brand gained notoriety among Korean, female college students within the masstige handbag market. Therefore, Sung Joo International acted as the official MCM licensee in Korea, from 2000 to 2004. Based upon a $4 million increase in sales volume, the Sung Joo Group purchased MCM in 2005 with the intent of transforming it into a full-fledged, global luxury brand. Since 2005, the Sung Joo Group has successfully molded MCM into an emerging, semi-luxury brand of iconic leather goods in China, the United States, Korea and Europe. Several innovative steps, such as new product designs, competitive pricing strategies, remerchandising, retail store expansions and collaborative marketing, preceded their entry into the international market. Such steps have been important for the elevation of MCM's brand prestige. The public image of Sung Joo Kim, founder and chairperson of Sung Joo International, has been vital to the rebuilding of MCM's brand image. Under her leadership, Sung Joo International was officially dubbed the “Sung Joo Group.” Her presence in news media and MCM advertisements has since broadened MCM's aspirational appeal. MCM is currently valued at $320 to $400 million, exceeding the $250 million in sales during MCM's 1993 preacquisition height. Within 5 years, Sung Joo Kim expects MCM to become a luxury brand that will be competitive with more established brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci.

The purpose of this paper is to identify differences in the measurement of innovation competence among business school students as well as the relationship between their innovation competence and academic performance along with self-monitoring. 247 undergraduate students (18–21 years old) studying in the leading universities in Saint Petersburg, Russia participated in the study. Data were collected using the Snyder’s self-monitoring scale and a new “Innovative competence” scale. The latter was adapted for the Russian audience from the “Framework for Innovation Competencies Development and Assessment” scale by reducing the number of statements by means of a confirmatory factor analysis. The study showed that none of the five components of innovation competence (creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, initiative, and networking) is related to student academic performance. Overall, male participants showed higher levels of self-monitoring than female participants. Also, our regression analysis indicated a positive and statistically significant relationship between student levels of self-monitoring and all five dimensions of their innovation competence. The new “Innovative competence” scale can be used by institutions of higher educations as well as for-profit and non-for-profit organizations. When levels of participants’ innovation competence and self-monitoring are assessed together, approaches to developing innovation potential among employees or students could be identified. The scale should be further tested among participants of other age groups and involved in different levels of education (e.g., graduate students) or types of educational institutions (e.g., professional and career colleges). The new “Innovative competence” scale can be used to measure levels of innovation competence among individuals with or without work experience or employment status.

Background: The tutorial plays a central role in problem-based learning (PBL). The effective implementation of small group tutorials is one of the key contributors to the students success in examinations. This study aimed to identify factors perceived as the predictors for effectiveness of PBL group tutorial.Design and method: The subjects of the study were all of the students (year of 2008) of the Medical College of Sultan Agung Islamic University taking the Tropical Disease Module. The adapted version of the scales adopted in this study included the scale developed by Van den Bossche et al for assessing team (group) effectiveness, trust dimension and learning behavior, a scale developed by Dolmans & Ginns (2005) for assessing tutor’s performance, a 5 points likert scale was used to asses the student opinions. Quantitative approach with correlation and multiple regression analysis was applied.Result: Of 238 students included in the study 84 (37.3%) were male and 139 (62.3%) were female. There was a significantly positive correlation between the trust dimension related to the interpersonal relationship among the members of tutorial group with the effectiveness of tutorial group ( r = 0.631, p< 0.01). There was a medium correlation among cohesion, group potency and psychological (r= 0,700, p < 0.05 there was correlation among the variables of (r = 0,557, p < 0,001), group potency (r = 0,517, p < 0,001), and psychological assurance (r = 0,437, p < 0.001). These three variables contributed to the group effectiveness as much as 48.4% with a F value of 87.857. The component of independence was not found to be the predictive factors for group effectiveness. The correlations among the variables of cohesion, group potency and psychological assurance resulted in contingency coeficien of 0.700 with p<0.05.Conclusion: The higher trust related to the interpersonal relationship among the member of groups, the more effective the group will be. Cohesion, group potency and psychological assurance were found to be the predictive factors for group effectiveness (Sains Medika, 3(1):16-23).

The scientific article explores the essence and functions of innovative educational platforms in the process of French language learning. The publication is the result of the author's research internship in France at the College of Saint-Joseph and the Lycée Pasteur in Besançon. The purpose of the research is to investigate and characterize the role of innovative educational platforms in the study of the French language. The following research methods were used: analysis of scientific publications related to the research problem, methods of systematization and generalization for the description and analysis of innovative educational platforms in the context of learning a foreign (French) language. It is established that during the intensive development of new technologies French teachers tend to actively use them in foreign language teaching, as the degree of perception and assimilation of knowledge by students depends on the correct choice of teaching methods, presentation and explanation of the lesson topic. In today's conditions, domestic teachers also actively use innovative educational platforms in the process of learning foreign languages. French is no exception. There are several objective reasons for this. Particularly important among them is the need to diversify the learning process, enhance the cognitive activity of students and expand their interests. Increasingly, foreign language teachers are moving from traditional to innovative methods to keep up with the times, help students master the material well and get positive results from foreign language activities. The relevance and timeliness of using educational platforms is obvious, as it is highlighted by the problems and challenges that contemporary teachers face. We are talking, first of all, about distance learning of subjects and disciplines. The use of the latest technologies in a foreign language lesson helps to involve students in creative collaboration and creates an environment for activity learning. This makes the learning process interesting and non-standard for students, whereas for teachers the latest technologies offer an endless choice of pedagogical resources that they can use depending on their educational needs.

Introduction: Congenital neutropenia (CN) is characterized by chronic neutropenia caused by a constitutional genetic defect and can be considered an orphan disease. Nationwide estimations of its incidence and prevalence are poorly documented but would provide key information to better follow-up of CN patients. Notably, orphan-drug status also is accorded based on such epidemiological parameters. Methods: The French Severe Chronic Neutropenia Registry (FSCNR) has prospectively enrolled CN patients since 1993, with multiple source verifications in France of that information: pediatric and adult hemato-immunology units, diagnostic labs... We also actively collect all cases followed in France, regardless of the healthcare facility monitoring the patient. To calculate incidence at birth, we considered subjects born between 1/1/1995 and 12/31/2017, because information completeness has been validated for this 22-year period. Number of births per year was provided by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). We used American College of Medical Genetics class 4 and 5 variants for genetic classification and the overall CN classification developed elsewhere.1 To estimate expected prevalence, we assumed 50-year life expectancy for these patients and compared ongoing enrolment to the prevalence estimation and calculated FNSCR coverage. A Poisson distribution was assumed. Results: On 15 July 2020, the FSCNR had identified 3205 patients. Reasons for non-enrolment of 2096 were, mainly: autoimmune neutropenia (n=501), foreign residency (n=214), other diagnosis (n=882) and diagnostic work-up not completed (n=249). Among the 1109 patients who fulfilled Chronic Neutropenia criteria, 242 had idiopathic neutropenia2 and 867 patients were considered to have CN1. Global results are presented in Table 1. In France, the CN incidence at birth (all subtypes combined) was 2.6×10-5 (95% CI: 2.04-2.8×10-5), which represents a mean of 23 new cases/year in a country with ~870,000 births/year. For all CN combined, the expected prevalence, assuming 50-year life expectancy, would be 1131 cases in a country of 65×106 inhabitants while the FCSNR currently has 867 cases enrolled or an estimated 77% nationwide coverage. Based on our results and our assumptions for life expectancy, estimated prevalence of CN for 10 millions inhabitants is therefore 174 CN. Genetic subtype representation is as follows: 20% SBDS, 17% ELANE (8% cyclic, 9% permanent), 9% GATA2, 7% SLC37A4, ~4-5% each of TAZ and CXCR4 and VPS13B, while the other subtypes are even rarer. At present, no cause has been identified for 25% of the cases. Conclusion: The results of this analysis provide an estimation of the major CN-descriptive epidemiological parameters and the relative frequencies of several subtypes. Despite the FSCNR's quite large registry, we estimate that about a quarter of the prevalent cases in France were missed, mainly those followed as adults. Abstract Whole blood coagulation tests such as thromboelastography and platelet function analyser (PFA-100) are increasingly used for the investigation of haemostatic disorders. These global tests offer the advantages of a simple use and fast results. Although PFA-100 using the ADP cartridge has been validated as a useful tool to assess primary haemostatic disturbancies and has a high sensitivity to detect Von Willebrand disease (VWD), this test is neither specific for, nor predicitve of, any particular disorder of primary haemostasis. On the other hand, the potential usefulness of thromboelastography for the evaluation of VWD has so far not been investigated. The present study was undertaken in order to determine alterations of the thromboelastogram tracing in patients with VWD and evaluate its usefulness in adjunction to PFA-100 for the diagnosis and characterisation of VWD. Thromboelastographic analysis (Pentafarm RoTEM® ) was performed, as previously described by Sorensen et al. (J Thromb Haemost. 2003 Mar;1(3):551–8), over a 36 months period on all consecutive patients referred for bleeding work-up to the Haemostasis and Thrombosis Unit of the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, Brussels, Belgium. Ninety-three patients fulfilling the diagnosis criteria of VWD were analysed (38 ± 18 year, 29 males-64 females). The distribution of VWD types was as follows: type 1 (59), type 2 (31) with subtypes 2A (12), 2M (17), 2B (2) and type 3 (3). The control population included 43 healthy individuals (24 females, 19 males, mean age: 38 ± 10 yr). For each patient, the following tests were performed: closure time measured by PFA-100 using the ADP cartridge, Von Willlebrand factor antigen (VWF:Ag) and activity (VWF:Ac) (collagen binding assay), factor VIII level (one-stage assay) and RoTEM®. The following parameters of the RoTEM® tracing were analysed: clotting time (CT), clot formation time (CFT), maximum clot firmness (MCF), alpha angle and maximum clot lysis (ML). VWD was associated with a significant prolongation of the CT and the CFT. By contrast, the MCF, the alpha angle and the ML were not significantly different between patients and controls. By multiple regression analysis, the CT and CFT prolongation was found to be influenced only by the reduction of the factor VIII levels. The most important prolongations of the CT and the CFT were found in type 3 VWD reflecting the severe factor VIII deficiency. No significant differences of the RoTEM® parameters were found between type 1, subtypes 2A and 2M, which altogether represent the majority (94%) of the VWD population. CT and CFT prolongation was not correlated with other parameters (closure time, VWF:Ag and VWF:Ac). As expected, the closure time was determined by the level of VWF activity. In conclusion, although we observed a significant prolongation of the CT and the CFT in patients with VWD, RoTEM® appears to be of limited value for the diagnosis and characterization of VWD. Nevertheless, RoTEM® could be used as a screening tool to identify factor VIII deficiency present in a subset of patients with VWD.

Studying physical science and then teaching it to children, as is known from decades of science education research, creates a huge problem of unknown origin. This study aims to develop a media and determine its effectiveness in increasing knowledge of physics for children. This research is a research and development with the stages of the ADDIE model to develop Roll Book media with the roll technique containing physical science material for early childhood. Data collection techniques were carried out through expert validation tests and field trial data. Analysis of effectiveness test data using a paired sample T-test statistical test. The results of the media effectiveness test showed an increase in knowledge of physics in the pre-test and pots-test. The summary of all the test results of the developed media shows that Roll Book products are effectively used to increase children's knowledge of physics. The concept of storybook media that has been developed in various interesting forms is expected to be an alternative solution for the scientific development of early childhood education studies. That murmur, soon replies, “God doth not need Either man’s work or his own gifts; who best Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state Is Kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed And post o’er Land and Ocean without rest: They also serve who only stand and wait.”1 1John Milton, Sonnet 19 The COVID-19 Pandemic has brought out most of the best (and some of the worst) in us. Much has been said, shared, even sung about health care workers as frontline heroes. Whether we indeed form the frontline, or man the last line of defense, due credit is being given to all “front-liners” – essential-service workers, drivers and delivery personnel, security guards, the military and police who literally serve in the trenches of this invisible war. Indeed, it is heartening to read the inspiring messages, hear the encouraging words, listen to the uplifting (sometimes funny) music and songs, witness the moving memes and cartoons, watch the refreshing dances and tributes, and receive the healing blessings and prayers on various media and social media platforms. Indeed, we are motivated to continue to work, so that others may safely stay home. Some of us have even been called upon to die, so that others may live. But so much less is and has been said about those who make our battle possible, who selflessly and silently took it upon themselves to clothe us with personal protective equipment, feed us, transport us, and even shelter us as we engage the unseen enemy. It is these heroes I wish to thank today. I certainly cannot thank them all, but I sincerely hope that those I do mention will represent the many others I cannot. Early on, my brother Elmer Lapeña and his Team Twilight group of “golfing enthusiasts and friends” (“company owners, executives, managers, engineers, technicians, entrepreneurs, and expats in the electronics, semiconductor, metalworking, automotive, aerospace, and packaging manufacturing industries”) responded to the call for better protection for frontliners with door-to-door deliveries of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to over 40 hospitals in the National Capitol Region, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna and Batangas including the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).2 On a personal note, Elmer and my sister-in-law Annette were closely monitoring our situation, going out of their way to obtain difficult-to-find PPEs for my wife Josie and myself, and our respective Departments of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) and Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) at the PGH. For her part, our very dear friend Gigi Bautista Rapadas organized Project #HelpCovid19Warriors(HCW), to “go where the virus goes” and “help where help is needed and requested,” harnessing donations from ‘family, friends, and friends of friends” to procure PPE (as well as disinfectants, even canned goods) that were distributed “from Metro Manila to the provinces: Tuguegarao, Bataan, Bulacan, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Cavite,” moving from hospitals and health centers to correctional institutes.3 It is because of them that our PGH Department of ORL obtained very expensive but essential respirator hoods for added protection from aerosolized virus when conducting airway procedures, in addition to head-to-foot PPEs for use of the PGH DFCM in attending to PGH staff at the UP Health Service. Meanwhile, without fanfare, our dear friends Popot and Agnes (also my DLSU ’79 classmate) Lorenzana provided cooked meals for 1,000 persons daily. Working with on-the-ground social workers and with the 2KK Tulong sa Kapwa Kapatid Foundation, their Feeding Program “A thousand meals for poor communities” reached Payatas, Talayan, Pinyahan, Smokey Mountain, Maisan, Bagong Silang, Old Balara, Tatalon, Sta. Teresita, Sampaloc, and Sta. Ana, among more than 50 other communities. They generously responded to my wife’s request to provide meals for her community patients of the Canossa Health Center in Tondo. They have also provided meals for hospital staff of Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center, the Medical City Hospital, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, Dr. Jose Rodriquez Memorial Hospital, Quezon City General Hospital, the San Lazaro Hospital, Valenzuela City Emergency and Lung Center of the Philippines. They continue this service which to date has provided for more than 32,000 meals, with corporate partners and private individuals joining the effort.4 Other De La Salle University (DLSU) College ‘79 batchmates who wish to remain anonymous obtained board approval of their endorsement to channel all the social development funds of their Maritime Multipurpose Cooperative for the next 3 years to the Philippine General Hospital. Adding their personal funds (and those solicited by their daughter and nephew), they took on the daunting task of sourcing and proving Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs) for our use. Another DLSU batchmate has been providing PPEs to various hospitals including PGH through their family corporation, Nobleland Ventures, Inc. Even their high school batch ’75 of Saint Jude Catholic School has donated boxes and boxes of PPEs to the PGH and other hospitals. Other DLSU ’79 classmates Bel and Bong Consing, and Timmy, Joy (and Tita Linda) Bautista have personally donated PPEs and funds for our COVID-19 operations, while classmate Fritz de Lange even sent over sweet mangoes for us to enjoy with our fellow frontliners. Generous donations also poured in from La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) High School ’76 friends Cris Ibarra, Norman Uy, Class 4E, and batchmates Tito and Pepper who wish to remain anonymous, as well as Menchit Borbon and her St. Theresa’s College Quezon City (STCQC) - Section 1 classmates. We even received overseas support from my LSGH 4B classmate Bingo Pantaleon from Yangon; my mom Libby, brother Bernie and Lilli, and friend Soyanto from Singapore, and sister Sabine from Germany. And how can we forget the regular frozen food deliveries of Jollibee chicken drumsticks and home-made Bulgogi and Tapa from our dear friends Ed and Aning Go? Perhaps the most touching gifts of all came from my eldest and youngest daughters Melay and Jica, who lovingly prepared and delivered much-appreciated meals to us, and middle child Ro-an, who with our son-in-law Reycay serenaded us with beautiful music that was appreciated by no less than Vice President Leni Robredo and featured by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.5 Their musical fund-raising campaign started with another haunting piece featuring my sister Nina and brother-in-law Kiko.6 As if that was not enough, Ro-an bakes cookies to raise funds for our ongoing COVID-19 operations at PGH, while Melay and Jica keep asking us what we want to eat next. These three count among those who have least, yet “put in everything ” from what little they have.7 These are but a few examples of those known personally to me- my family and friends. And there are many more. In the same way, every other doctor and front liner will have their own stories to tell, of friends, family even mere acquaintances who have come out of the shadows to help, to care, to share in whatever way they can, in fighting this battle with us. Let this be their tribute as well. Those of us who serve in the Philippine General Hospital have been called People Giving Hope.8,9 I believe that we do give hope because others give us hope in turn. I like to think that the inscription in the PGH lobby “They Also Serve Who Care and Share” honors these others in a special way who go over and beyond the call of duty. With apologies to John Milton, our heroes go way over and beyond “they also serve who only stand and wait.”

"Increased Angiogenesis and Enhanced Bone Formation in Patients with IgM Monoclonal Gammopathy and Urticarial Skin Rash: New Insight Into the Biology of the Schnitzler Syndrome." Abstract Abstract 1802 Schnitzler syndrome is a rare plasma cell disorder which is characterized by the presence of a monoclonal IgM component in association with a chronic urticarial skin rash and at least 2 of the following criteria: fever, joint and/or bone pain, organomegaly (enlarged lymph nodes, spleen and/or liver), increased neutrophil counts and increased ESR. Abnormal bone findings with imaging evidence of osteosclerosis are also frequent. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is unclear and there is no information on bone remodeling and angiogenesis in these patients. To address this issue we studied 13 patients (12M/1F, median age 55 years, range: 39–79 years) with a well characterized Schnitzler syndrome. Patients were diagnosed between 1989 and 2009 and were treated and followed in Hôpital Saint-Louis, Paris (France) and in the University of Athens (Greece). We evaluated the following serum indices of bone remodeling and angiogenesis at diagnosis and after treatment: i) osteoclast regulators [soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (sRANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG)]; ii) osteoblast inhibitor dickkopf-1 (Dkk-1); iii) bone resorption marker C-telopeptide of collagen type-1 (CTX); iv) bone formation markers [bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (bALP) and osteocalcin (OC)]; and v) angiogenic cytokines [vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), angiogenin (ang), angiopoietin (angp)-1 and -2]. The above molecules were also measured in 24 gender- and age-matched controls. All patients presented with urticaria and monoclonal IgM(kappa) component (median M-peak 0.79 g/dl; range 0.1–2.36 g/dl), while 10 (76%) patients had fever, 9 (69%) had joint and/or bone pain, 5 (38%) had lymphadenopathy and 2 (15%) had splenomegaly. Four patients had documented sclerotic bone lesions in plain X-rays. A technetium bone scintigraphy was performed in 11 patients; all of them had high uptake in at least one site. At diagnosis, 11/13 patients received various symptomatic therapies, including low dose corticosteroids that were ineffective. Two patients at diagnosis and 6 after initial symptomatic therapy were treated with the quinolone antibiotic pefloxacin, while 7 patients were treated with the interleukin-1 inhibitor anakinra (including 3 previously treated by pefloxacine) usually with a complete and sustained efficacy on clinical manifestations of the disease. In a median follow up time of 10 years (range 1–20 years), 3 patients developed overt Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) at 5, 7 and 20 years post diagnosis. At diagnosis patients had increased serum levels of bALP (mean±SD: 36.5±15.0 IU/L vs. 26.8±7.1 IU/L; p=0.049), osteocalcin (20.5±18.6 ng/ml vs. 7.4±3.5 ng/ml; p<0.001), Dkk-1 (49.9±13.0 pmol/L vs. 30.9±11.1 pmol/L; p<0.001) and OPG (6.7±1.3 pmol/L vs. 3.5±1.8; p<0.001) compared to controls, while there were no differences between patients and controls for sRANKL and CTX. The increase of Dkk-1 may suggest a balance effect on osteoblast increased activity, while the lack of increase in osteoclast function is in accordance with data on idiopathic osteosclerosis. At diagnosis, patients had also elevated VEGF (809±598 pg/ml vs. 263±257 pg/ml; p=0.001) and ang (221±96 ng/ml vs. 169±33; p=0.013) and decreased angp-1 (18.7±9.1 ng/ml vs. 25.4±10.9 ng/ml; p=0.048) and angp-1/angp-2 ratio (13.9±8.7 vs. 63.4±102.1; p=0.005). Patients presenting with fever had reduced angp-1 levels (14.8±5.2 ng/ml) compared to others (32.7±10.3 ng/ml; p=0.03). Interestingly, patients who progressed to WM had also decreased levels of angp-1 (10.2±7.5 ng/ml) compared to others (21.2±8.2 ng/ml; p=0.04) and angp-1/angp-2 ratio (5.3±4.6 vs. 16.5±8.0; p=0.04), suggesting that low angp-1/angp-2 ratio at diagnosis, which reflects increased angiogenesis, may indicate a predisposition for evolution of the gammopathy towards an overt WM. After successful treatment, VEGF levels decreased (387±207 pg/ml) compared to baseline (770±456 pg/ml; p=0.04). In conclusion our analysis shows increased serum levels of angiogenic cytokines in Schnitzler syndrome and documents enhanced bone formation which appears not to be balanced by a comparable increase in bone resorption; this result may explain the presence of sclerotic bone lesions in this entity. Successful therapy with either anakinra or pefloxacin is associated with reduction of the major angiogenic cytokine VEGF. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Ocean literacy is currently at the forefront of the development of the notion of marine environmental sustainability. It is critical to compare ocean literacy ideas in curriculum standards. Comics Convey various messages of maritime insight content on integrated, contextual, and meaningful learning. This study aims to design STEAM (to R-SLAMET; Religion, Science, Literacy, Art, Math, Engineer, and Technology) learning that contains ocean literacy messages in a comic media. Through the qualitative research method with study case type, researchers seek to aid early childhood education (ECE) educators in designing R-SLAMET learning through the media to overcome maritime cultural literacy problems. The participants of this study consisted of three educators and 43 children. The findings show that the natural play experience of early childhood can be a source of inspiration to find ocean literacy through R-SLAMET learning activities. Contextual play by children becomes a reference for designing comic-based R-SLAMET learning. Comic media can integrate R-SLAMET learning in improving children's ocean literacy. David Whitteridge was born in South Norwood, London, on 22 June 1912, the second of three children. His father William Randall Whitteridge came from a Baptist family, and was a manufacturer’s agent whose living depended on the export of woollen goods and was at times precarious. His mother Jeanne was of French and Dutch Protestant ancestry; her family were small farmers in Normandy. She came to this country as a governess and to teach French; she was later to be distinguished for taking and passing O-level German and A-level French, at the ages of 89 and 90 respectively. David’s brother, Gordon, K.C.M.G., became a diplomat and his sister, Marcelle Elizabeth, married Robert Audley Furtado, C.B. After five years at All Saints, a good church school in North Norwood, David won a Foundation Scholarship to Whitgift School in Croydon (1922-31). He spoke of his time there with some affection. As a Foundation scholar he was expected to take Greek and Latin for School Certificate, but in his four years in the VIth form he specialized in the sciences. The physics and chemistry teaching was exceptionally good, the biology ‘best passed over’. He played rugby in the First XV (just) and was a member of the shooting VIII. An accomplished all-rounder, he left in 1931 with a leaving scholarship and a demyship at Magdalen College, Oxford to read physiology and medicine.

Since 2009 librarians at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia have been teaching a fully weighted (half-unit/three credit) course in information literacy (IL), LIBR2100: Introduction to Research in the Information Age. Course sections are capped at 30 students with classes offered on campus in a traditional classroom/lab environment, and via distance using multimode technology. Now firmly established in the University’s curriculum, required in three programs and an elective in all others, the course is in demand with growing wait-lists requiring that multiple sections be offered each term. While the literature supports the positive outcomes of IL credit courses for both the students enrolled and the librarians teaching, few universities or colleges currently offer such an opportunity. Based on our positive experience at the Mount, accomplished with a professional librarian compliment of only five, we strongly recommend other universities and colleges consider seriously their ability to offer their own IL course. This article reflects on the steps taken by librarians at Mount Saint Vincent University to get a credit course in IL on the books, how we managed course implementation, and negotiated the inevitable workload demands. While we also briefly discuss course objectives and curriculum, and their evolution over time, these are not our primary focus. Because the literature is largely silent on the mechanics of getting an IL course mainstreamed in a university or college curriculum, this article focuses on outlining the phases of credit course development and traces an IL course from conception to reality.

This paper attempts to identify the ways and give examples of how Sarbanes-Oxley compliance can be taught in real time using the SAP R/3 system and the many lessons derived from the experience. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act significantly impacts CEO’s, CFO’s and public accountants. It also applies to all levels of management. Organizations and their managers need to recognize the significance of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance as well as the benefits it can provide. These benefits include reliability of the financial statements, quality of reporting, and also the opportunity to review a company’s processes and enhance the efficiency of all financial and operating departments. Integrating SAP technology into the classroom has been one of the primary initiatives of the Department of Accounting, a signature program at Saint Joseph’s University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The implementation and roll-out process has covered a variety of areas from navigation to key business processes and accounting within SAP R/3. With the evolution of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the need for compliance within a company, the department decided that students should be given exposure on how to use SAP R/3 to conduct 404 walkthroughs in consonance with the Sarbanes-Oxley initiatives. Due to the integrative nature of SAP technology the system is best able to conduct audit processes and create exception reports needed to identify material weaknesses and deficiencies.
