Анотація:

DInSAR is a renowned method for estimating land subsidence based on the principles of interferometric synthetic aperture radar using different series of the temporal dataset. The present study has been performed using GMTSAR software with Sentinel 1 SAR data of C band for the duration of 2017–2019 (January to April) and focused particularly over the area of Jagadhri city which is situated 100 km away from Chandigarh, which has been identified under the potential threat of land subsidence. The DInSAR method has been applied in this study that came up with an outcome of three interferograms and yearly displacement that broadcast an update on the diagnosis of subsidence activity in the area. A total of six Single Look Complex (SLC) datasets were selectively chosen with a minimum temporal and spatial baseline so that the problem of decorrelation would be minimal. Goldstein filtering has been applied to the deburst interferograms which reduced the noise and, in turn, improved the quality of output. The city is located on the western bank of river Yamuna and about 55 km on the east of Ambala. Due to the presence of unconsolidated sediments in the aquifer system and over-exploitation of groundwater to meet the domestic needs has led to surface deformation in and around the city area. The outcome of this study identifies the area of depression quite distinctly while the accuracy has been assessed by ground survey. The rate of subsidence estimated approximately 4.98 cm/year which can prove to be disastrous over the course of time.

Learning outcomes After studying this case, students should be able to: understand the process of opportunity identification for forming social enterprises (knowledge), discuss various concepts related to social entrepreneurship and not-for-profit firms (comprehension), apply tools to differentiate between social and commercial enterprises (application), analyze the role of environmental factors like culture in influencing business (analysis) and develop decision-making skills by critically evaluating the options (evaluation). Case overview/synopsis Sasta Bhojan Sewa (SBS) was one of the key projects of Parupkar Sewa Society. The social venture initiated by Jaswinder Singh, a young resident of Ambala (a small town in Haryana, India), got registered as a not-for-profit society in the year 2018. Mr. Singh initiated various social welfare projects since the year 2006 when he got inspired from the history of Sikh Gurus. As years passed, he was able to employ more and more people. This led to the development of a social venture, which had 33 employees at the end of the year 2019. The society was running seven major projects with the help of dasvandh (donations). Project SBS was about providing home-like hygienic meals to people at merely INR10. There were 11 canteens in Ambala city and cantonment, which were being run under that project. Around 1,500 people were eating daily in those canteens, out of which around 70–80 people were not able to pay even INR10. The project had employed 30 people. The salaries of the staff and other operating expenses like liquid petroleum gas (LPG) expense, transportation cost and electricity were met through dasvandh (donations) from the local households. When the project was initiated, the cost of preparing a meal was INR10, but by the end of 2019, the cost went up to INR12 per meal due to food inflation. The meal was still being sold at INR10 at a loss of INR2 per meal. On December 28, 2019, as founder of the society, Mr. Singh was thinking of raising the selling price to INR12 per meal, which had to be implemented on January 01, 2020 but he was doubtful in doing so. He thought increasing the price might defeat the purpose of starting SBS as he was reflecting on how poor people were and how each rupee mattered to them. He was also considering that it might affect the goodwill of the society that was known for selling food at an extremely low price. By using the example of SBS, we explain various concepts of not-for-profit social enterprises like opportunity identification, key drivers, business model canvas and environmental effects in this teaching note. The teaching note also provides cost–benefit analysis of the available options to facilitate effective decision-making. Complexity academic level Undergraduate and graduate-level business programs. ABSTRACT Background A ‘healthy village’ concept as a healthy setting approach is lacking in India, where approximately 70% of population lives in villages. Despite various village development programs, the quality of life in Indian villages continues to be poor. Objective To evaluate some villages in district Ambala as healthy villages. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study of seven villages under a sub center was conducted during January to April 2010. These villages were compared on the basis of scores obtained on a checklist developed for evaluating ‘healthy village’. The village headmen, committee members, various health workers, accredited social health activists and anganwadi workers were also interviewed. Results The sub center headquarter, the largest village, scored maximum among seven villages (90/130; 69.2%). Lowest score was observed in the smallest village (49/130; 37.7%). Most villages faired poorly on intersectoral coordination, youth activities, and historical/cultural heritage. Performance of all villages on ‘availability of basic statistics’ and ‘animal shelter’ was excellent. Conclusion Apparently, population size of a village was linked with its being a healthy village. None of the village had an excellent score. Overall, an average rating can be assigned to these villages as healthy village. How to cite this article Kalyanasundaram M, Singh A, Singh N. Анотація:

The intensified urbanization process of recent decades has highlighted the need to plan cities, suitably considering people’s mobility. The goal of this article is to analyze the mobility conditions of Ambato city center using a sustainability approach. The methodology used was based on a theoretical review and analysis of official documents, fieldwork, and observation records. The results were obtained by analyzing objective and technical variables that show the study area’s potentialities and weaknesses to develop active and less polluting modes of transport. A reflection on the characteristics of pedestrians, cyclists, and mass public transport is presented to propose management strategies that aim at strengthening the current mobility model.

Jose P. v. Ambach is a class action lawsuit involving the rights of handicapped students to be referred, evaluated, and placed in a timely fashion into appropriate educational programs and services in the New York City public schools. The role of this case as a vehicle in the restructuring of the delivery of special education services is discussed. The major issues, including timely evaluation and placement, due process procedures, accessibility of facilities, and systematic monitoring of the delivery of services, are analyzed in terms of the impact on the delivery of special education services. The current status of this ongoing litigation, the progress toward compliance, and some of the implications for special education are presented.

Evidence-based studies in India suggest that support from family members and health care professionals help mothers to make decisions about infant-feeding. However, early initiation of weaning and introduction of pre-lacteal food are common practices in India, and there is limited literature exploring factors influencing mothers’ decisions about weaning. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to explore first-time mothers’ experiences of weaning, and to identify the factors influencing their decision-making about weaning. A qualitative research methodology was used incorporating semi-structured interviews and observations with 30 mothers of young infants, in Ambala City, Haryana, India. A thematic analysis of the data was undertaken. Two themes were abstracted from the data: deciphering the signals and weaning as a reciprocal and cooperative process. The findings of the study suggested that, in response to deciphering the signals, the mothers commenced weaning initially with spoon-feeding, then as a transitional and overlapping process between spoon- and self-feeding. Weaning was depicted as a reciprocal and cooperative process between the mother and infant. It entailed the cooperative and progressively active and autonomous participation of the infant. At the same time, it entailed the adoption of an active and controlling approach by the mother initially, shifting increasingly to a less active and monitoring approach. Overall, the study provides a valuable insight into how weaning commenced and progressed with a group of first-time mothers, and the factors influencing their decision-making about weaning, in India.

El siguiente trabajo de investigación abarcara el complicado tema del espacio público, este espacio pretende será estudiado a partir de la perspectiva de una frontera como es el caso: Ciudad Juárez Chihuahua y El Paso Texas. El objetivo es el lograr identificar los factores que alteran la morfología urbana de las dos ciudades con respecto a la configuración de sus espacios públicos analizando sus usos y características pero siempre teniendo en perspectiva el factor de ser una frontera, como en este caso: México-Estados Unidos. La metodología que se lleva a cabo para la realización de este trabajo de investigación es de tipo mixto cualitativa y cuantitativa de carácter comparativo.de donde entre las teorías urbanísticas de espacio público, los conceptos sociológicos y los datos estadísticos de ambas ciudades se pretende llegar a resultados los cuales revelaran las diferencias de los modelos urbanos tanto mexicanos y americanos, pero sobre todo el modelo morfológico de las ciudades fronterizas denominadas “ciudades-espejo”, tal cual es el caso de estudio pero identificando como esto afecta la perspectiva del espacio público tradicional como lo son las plazas del centro histórico de ambas ciudades. The following research work covering the complicated subject of public space, this space is intended to be studied from the perspective of a border city as is the case: Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua and El Paso Texas. The intention is to be able to identify facts that modify the urban morphology and the configuration of the public spaces by analyzing their characteristics and uses but always keeping in perspective the fact to be a frontier, as in this case: Mexico-USA. The methodology used on this research is mixed-qualitative and quantitative comparative nature, supported of theories of urban public space, sociological concepts and statistical data from both cities to obtain results which reveal the differences of urban models in both urban models Mexicans and Americans, but especially the cities called " mirror cities ", as is the case of study but identifying how it affects the perspective of traditional public spaces such as the down town of both cities.

A nivel global, las poblaciones urbanas se han venido expandiendo fuera de los límites tradicionales de la ciudad, reconfigurando antiguos polígonos municipales y rebasando las estructuras gubernamentales e institucionales. Esta tendencia en la urbanización mundial ha provocado que el crecimiento se presente no solo en los asentamientos humanos y en la ocupación del territorio, sino que impacte en la actividad económica y en la esfera social de los residentes urbanos. En el caso de México, se tienen registradas 56 zonas metropolitanas en el país (SEDESOL, INEGI, CONAPO, 2008); de ellas, solamente tres se localizan en territorios vinculados a la actividad turística: Acapulco, Cancún y Puerto Vallarta. De éstos, la única región metropolitana turística con carácter inter-estatal corresponde a la Bahía de Banderas, cuyos municipios más representativos son Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco) y Bahía de Banderas (Nayarit). Ambas entidades federativas se localizan estratégicamente en la región Centro Occidente del país, sin embargo, los grados de desarrollo son diferenciados, presentándose una primacía poblacional, así como capacidades y recursos en el caso jalisciense. Dentro de las características que definen a la región metropolitana inter-estatal de Jalisco y Nayarit, se apunta: i) existencia de una ciudad central de más de 250,000 habitantes, en este caso, Puerto Vallarta; ii) conurbación física entre localidades de dos municipios que rebasan los límites estatales; iii) integración funcional entre ciudades en la región; iv) interdependencia de los municipios; y, v) actividad económica similar, basada principalmente en el turismo (Fiderco, 2009). En el presente trabajo se abordan tres elementos de análisis: 1) revisión de los procesos de metropolización a nivel global, bajo la perspectiva de la gobernabilidad; 2) indagatoria sobre las condiciones de las zonas metropolitanas en México, en particular en los territorios cuya principal vocación es el turismo; y, 3) acercamiento al proceso metropolitano en la región inter-estatal Jalisco y Nayarit. Con la revisión de estos componentes, se contribuye en el debate sobre los procesos de metropolización a nivel mundial y local, particularmente en el caso de la región inter-estatal de Jalisco y Nayarit, resaltando las particularidades que se presentan en un territorio donde la base de la actividad económica es turística.

En el debate actual sobre ciudad y territorio se abordan múltiples tópicos entre ellos son significativos la sostenibilidad ambiental, la dispersión de los asentamientos, la movilidad, la desigualdad social, el paisaje y el espacio público siendo a su vez formas de acercar, conocer y entender estos procesos complejos que generan y son la ciudad simultáneamente. Este trabajo aborda el Espacio Público como uno de los filtros desde dónde poder obtener datos sobre la ciudad en la que vivimos y desde allí impulsar políticas acordes al modelo de ciudad deseado. Reconociendo el Espacio Público como el lugar por excelencia de las prácticas urbanas, como soporte y catalizador de la interacción y socialización entre las personas. Viendo lo urbano como “escenario y producto de lo colectivo haciéndose a sí mismo”; donde “su personaje central es polisensorial, capaz de relaciones complejas y transparentes con el mundo” (Delgado, 2004) con la finalidad y necesidad de relacionarse socialmente. Si bien el Espacio Público se define tanto por su dimensión jurídica como por su dimensión socio-cultural, aquí se aborda su forma de uso y apropiación, como lugar de relación y de identificación susceptible de diversos usos y que implica una co-presencia entre desconocidos (Borja, 1998). Es esta cualidad integradora del Espacio Público la que nos lleva a considerar las actividades y el hábitat construido donde éstas se desarrollan, atendiendo una multiplicidad e intensidad de prácticas urbanas que permite hacer más vivible y democrática la ciudad y favorecer la interacción de los diferentes grupos demográficos que la habitan. En ese contexto conceptual se propone un acercamiento a dos espacios públicos: Vila de Gràcia en Barcelona y la Rambla en Montevideo. Se realiza una lectura general de los dos enclaves urbanos desde una concepción planificadora del espacio público que contextualiza cada una de las áreas a observar, una lectura particular de aproximación a ambos espacios destacando sus principales rasgos y por último una mirada desde la propia vivencia del lugar a partir de la yuxtaposición de recorridos aleatorios con especial atención en las actividades que desarrollan las diferentes personas que viven ambas ciudades. Tanto la Vila de Gràcia como la Rambla son espacios públicos planificados, diseñados y apropiados por su gente que aún transformándose mantienen vivo el rol que les fue asignado como lugares de intercambio, paseo, servicio y generadores de ciudadanía.

Se presentan los resultados del Programa Intensivo Erasmus “Let’s Open Cities for Us” (LOCUS), que analiza, mediante talleres intensivos de proyectos, la problemática de la movilidad en centros urbanos históricos. El trabajo se centra en el estudio de la accesibilidad y diseño universal para la supresión de barreras arquitectónicas existentes en núcleos urbanos de pronunciado y complejo emplazamiento y con una fuerte carga patrimonial histórica, circunstancia que limita significativamente el alcance de las posibles maniobras de intervención. LOCUS (www.etsav.upc.eduarrerlocus) es coordinado por la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña y cuenta con la participación de ocho escuelas de arquitectura de universidades europeas asociadas al programa. Los primeros casos de estudio han sido las ciudades de Tarragona (Febrero 2008) y Gerona (Julio 2008), y los siguientes serán Évora (Julio 2009) e Ibiza (2010). El estudio es realizado por una treintena de estudiantes durante los 15 días de duración del taller. Inicialmente deben someterse a la experiencia previa de pasearse por la ciudad en una sesión práctica de simulación de discapacidades, actividad indispensable y efectiva para la sensibilización y adquisición de los conocimientos necesarios para el óptimo desarrollo del ejercicio propuesto. El objetivo de plantear proyectos de elevada complejidad que deben ser resueltos según el caso más desfavorable –garantizando el acceso según todas las posibles capacidades de las personas y sin dañar la herencia patrimonial de la ciudad- es el de ejercitar al máximo el intelecto mediante la búsqueda de soluciones innovadoras y factibles. El interés de la tarea reside en cómo resolver dicha accesibilidad en entornos construidos donde la libertad de actuación es mucho menor, y más todavía cuando se trata de entornos protegidos, donde cualquier intervención será objeto del juicio más mayoritario y represivo. Tras la experiencia de los talleres realizados en Tarragona y Gerona se han obtenido unas conclusiones generales en el procedimiento de actuación para garantizar la accesibilidad en un núcleo histórico y, sobre todo, se han detectado los puntos clave de intervención en los que se precisa de un estudio más exhaustivo. En ambas ocasiones, estudiantes participantes en el taller han decidido realizar su Proyecto Final de Carrera (PFC) a partir del trabajo desarrollado en LOCUS. Actualmente tres estudiantes están trabajando en zonas propuestas por el programa, y un cuarto estudiante, Carlos Vidal, ha presentado su PFC de Arquitectura Técnica basándose en LOCUS Tarragona, y ha obtenido el Premio Proyecto de Fin de Carrera UPC - Fundación Universia. Cabe remarcar la necesidad y eficacia de estudios de este tipo en otras ciudades y situaciones con problemas de accesibilidad, debido a que la diversidad de enfoques y soluciones que se genera tras un estudio pormenorizado de este tipo puede ser de gran ayuda real para futuras actuaciones municipales. La ponencia presentará de manera concreta los resultados claves de actuación en un núcleo histórico basándose en el caso práctico de Tarragona desarrollado en el PFC de Carlos Vidal. El estudio detecta que la mayor parte de los problemas de accesibilidad de la Parte Alta de Tarragona se pueden resolver interviniendo únicamente en dos puntos del eje peatonal principal que une la Plaça de la Font y la Catedral. Estas intervenciones corresponden a dos puntos con importante desnivel a lo largo de dicho recorrido que se solucionan con propuestas integradas en el patrimonio. Se opta por el uso de edificios existentes para la instalación de ascensores, resultando ser una solución limpia, integradora y polivalente en diversas situaciones donde se compromete la accesibilidad y el respeto del entorno. Asimismo se destaca el doble beneficio que generan dichas intervenciones, al integrar equipamientos que revalorizan y mejoran la calidad de vida de los usuarios.

Este trabajo aborda los “conflictos territoriales” (Sabatini, 1997) por la definición del espacio urbano que tienen lugar en la ciudad de Córdoba y, particularmente, en el barrio Alberdi. Con este objetivo, centramos la mirada en las prácticas, intereses y sentidos que los grupos desarrollistas despliegan sobre el sector. Asimismo abordamos las estrategias habitacionales de resistencia que las familias del barrio ponen en juego frente al avance de estos grupos empresariales. Así, el propósito de la investigación es dar cuenta de las formas diferenciales de apropiación de la ciudad que ponen en juego las familias y las empresas. Desde nuestra perspectiva, ambas prácticas se constituyen en lógicas que compiten por el espacio urbano e implican, por un lado, la rivalidad entre los residentes y los no residentes, y por el otro, y la disputa entre los usos que podrán darse al espacio. En definitiva, lo que está en juego es el derecho a la ciudad y, junto a él, la capacidad de decidir cómo y dónde vivir. This work addresses the "territorial disputes" (Sabatini, 1997) by the definition of urban space taking place in the city of Córdoba, and particularly in the neighborhood Alberdi. To this end, we focus on practical look, interests and ways that the developers group displayed on the sector. Furthermore we address the housing strategies of resistance that neighborhood families come into play with the advance of these business groups. Thus, the purpose of the research is to account for differential forms of appropriation of the city that are at stake families and businesses. From our perspective, both practices constitute logical vying for urban space and involve, on the one hand, the rivalry between residents and non-residents, and on the other, and the dispute between the uses that may be in space. Ultimately, what is at stake is the right to the city and, with it, the ability to decide how and where to live.
