Large-scale centralized storage of speech data poses severe privacy threats to the speakers. Indeed, the emergence and widespread usage of voice interfaces starting from telephone to mobile applications, and now digital assistants have enabled easier communication between the customers and the service providers. Massive speech data collection allows its users, for instance researchers, to develop tools for human convenience, like voice passwords for banking, personalized smart speakers, etc. However, centralized storage is vulnerable to cybersecurity threats which, when combined with advanced speech technologies like voice cloning, speaker recognition, and spoofing, may endow a malicious entity with the capability to re-identify speakers and breach their privacy by gaining access to their sensitive biometric characteristics, emotional states, personality attributes, pathological conditions, etc.Individuals and the members of civil society worldwide, and especially in Europe, are getting aware of this threat. With firm backing by the GDPR, several initiatives are being launched, including the publication of white papers and guidelines, to spread mass awareness and to regulate voice data so that the citizens' privacy is protected. This thesis is a timely effort to bolster such initiatives and propose solutions to remove the biometric identity of speakers from speech signals, thereby rendering them useless for re-identifying the speakers who spoke them.Besides the goal of protecting the speaker's identity from malicious access, this thesis aims to explore the solutions which do so without degrading the usefulness of speech. We present several anonymization schemes based on voice conversion methods to achieve this two-fold objective. The output of such schemes is a high-quality speech signal that is usable for publication and a variety of downstream tasks. All the schemes are subjected to a rigorous evaluation protocol which is one of the major contributions of this thesis. This protocol led to the finding that the previous approaches do not effectively protect the privacy and thereby directly inspired the VoicePrivacy initiative which is an effort to gather individuals, industry, and the scientific community to participate in building a robust anonymization scheme. We introduce a range of anonymization schemes under the purview of the VoicePrivacy initiative and empirically prove their superiority in terms of privacy protection and utility. Finally, we endeavor to remove the residual speaker identity from the anonymized speech signal using the techniques inspired by differential privacy. Such techniques provide provable analytical guarantees to the proposed anonymization schemes and open up promising perspectives for future research. In practice, the tools developed in this thesis are an essential component to build trust in any software ecosystem where voice data is stored, transmitted, processed, or published. They aim to help the organizations to comply with the rules mandated by civil governments and give a choice to individuals who wish to exercise their right to privacy
Dongo, Escalante Irvin Franco Benito. "Anonymisation de documents RDF." Thesis, Pau, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PAUU3045/document.
With the advance of the Semantic Web and the Open Linked Data initiatives, a huge quantity of RDF data is available on Internet. The goal is to make this data readable for humans and machines, adopting special formats and connecting them by using International Resource Identifiers (IRIs), which are abstractions of real resources of the world. As more data is published and shared, sensitive information is also provided. In consequence, the privacy of entities of interest (e.g., people, companies) is a real challenge, requiring special techniques to ensure privacy and adequate security over data available in an environment in which every user has access to the information without any restriction (Web). Then, three main aspects are considered to ensure entity protection: (i) Preserve privacy, by identifying and treating the data that can compromise the privacy of the entities (e.g., identifiers, quasi-identifiers); (ii) Identify utility of the public data for diverse applications (e.g., statistics, testing, research); and (iii) Model background knowledge that can be used for adversaries (e.g., number of relationships, a specific relationship, information of a node). Anonymization is one technique for privacy protection that has been successfully applied in practice for databases and graph structures. However, studies about anonymization in the context of RDF data, are really limited. These studies are initial works for protecting individuals on RDF data, since they show a practical anonymization approach for simple scenarios as the use of generalization and suppression operations based on hierarchies. However, for complex scenarios, where a diversity of data is presented, the existing anonymization approaches does not ensure an enough privacy. Thus, in this context, we propose an anonymization framework, which analyzes the neighbors according to the background knowledge, focused on the privacy of entities represented as nodes in the RDF data. Our anonymization approach is able to provide better privacy, since it takes into account the l-diversity condition as well as the neighbors (nodes and edges) of entities of interest. Also, an automatic anonymization process is provided by the use of anonymization operations associated to the datatypes

In Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and voice processing, the use of machine learning tools has become in the last few years more and more standard. Especially, many state-of-the-art systems now rely on the use of Neural Networks. In this thesis, we propose a wide overview of four different MIR and voice processing tasks, using systems built with neural networks. More precisely, we will use convolutional neural networks, an image designed class neural networks. The first task presented is music structure estimation. For this task, we will show how the choice of input representation can be critical, when using convolutional neural networks. The second task is singing voice detection. We will present how to use a voice detection system to automatically align lyrics and audio tracks. With this alignment mechanism, we have created the largest synchronized audio and speech data set, called DALI. Singing voice separation is the third task. For this task, we will present a data augmentation strategy, a way to significantly increase the size of a training set. Finally, we tackle voice anonymization. We will present an anonymization method that both obfuscate content and mask the speaker identity, while preserving the acoustic scene
Martínez, Lluís Sergio. "Ontology based semantic anonymisation of microdata." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/108961.

To study the voice in the silence of its expression reveals a new origin of language. Such a study replaces an examination of the sign as defined by philosophers and musicians during the classical period, and implies a modification of the language of the unconscious, considered until now as a sign by freud and as a signifier by lacan. The combined historical and psychoanalytical points of view identify the gesture in this construction, and put in question the psychoanalytical status of representation. The clinical study of the voice in autistic muteness leads us to reconsider the content of metapsychology. Through the bipolarity of the sound gesture and the soundless gesture, subnitted to the rhythm of encounter, and of primitive, submitted to the rhythm of encounter, and of primitive violence, a duo of passion is organized, wich in its paroxysm, extends to scream. This new language of the unconscious does not refer to representation but to voice. Thus voice finds itself located begoud the image, within the space of the vocal. Through this space, we are able to construct a vocal mirror, in wich the voice becomes an echo of desire, as a primitive, vocal writing of the psyche, and thus modifies the basis of the unconscious

In summer 2013, the term "Big Data" appeared and attracted a lot of interest from companies. This thesis examines the contribution of these methods to actuarial science. It addresses both theoretical and practical issues on high-potential themes such as textit{Optical Character Recognition} (OCR), text analysis, data anonymization and model interpretability. Starting with the application of machine learning methods in the calculation of economic capital, we then try to better illustrate the boundary that may exist between automatic learning and statistics. Highlighting certain advantages and different techniques, we then study the application of deep neural networks in the optical analysis of documents and text, once extracted. The use of complex methods and the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018 led us to study its potential impacts on pricing models. By applying anonymization methods to pure premium calculation models in non-life insurance, we explored different generalization approaches based on unsupervised learning. Finally, as regulations also impose criteria in terms of model explanation, we conclude with a general study of methods that now allow a better understanding of complex methods such as neural networks

Our research is a contribution to studies on secondary acoustic cues in Mandarin tone identification, by comparing acoustic data collected in modal speech and in whispered speech. According to the literature on the same issue, theses cues could be found in acoustic dimensions other than in the fundamental frequency, as a set of attributes. We have analyzed these attributes in the temporal domain, at the intensity level and in the spectrum, as well as their relations with tones. Our results show that some temporal parameters and the fourth resonance in the spectrum are very closely related to tones. These relations are dependent on the intrinsic characteristics of the vowel that carries the tone (which is equivalent to the rime in our research)

This work aims to propose an overall reflexion in particular relating to the role of the mother in winnicott and lacan. Thus we develop the concept of empathy. Our process follows three axes. The first consists of probing the origin of the mother-child relationship from a genetic and physiological point of view, and this, well before birth the framework of the primary mother-child education bond. We are thus led to lay the basis of a vast articulation of comprehension with others. This enables us to develop the concept of empathy harmony. Which leads us to probe the contributions of the anglo-saxon school represented in particular by m. Klein, o. Kernberg, and h. Searles from the point of view of the object-relationship. Thus, we pass from the roles of a genetic nature to those which refer to the identification as a differentiation. This finally leads us to approach the bases of the word as bases of the symbolic system, and to proceed. Through a study of the work of dante, to an analysis of the particular statute of the voice of the mother, creation, or the voice of god. This, in reference to my certificate

Here is developed a description of the primary sound-environment of man based upon applications and treatise that conceive the transmittal of a sound and more particularly the voice - even before birth - both as a psychophysical contribution and a symbolical gift. Examining some mythical texts belonging to different cosmogonies will enable to spot through the figurative representation of a primordial voice or a creative speech the basic themes and the process recalling the founder aspect of speech for man. The phantasm underlying the original narratives also determine the expressive construc- tions of the individual who sublimes through creation the loss of an imaginary voice. A morphological description of the "making up" of the voice from the early vocal impulses of the baby to the predicative activity at its beginning will endeavour to understand how the voice turns into speech. This passage is interpreted in connection to a psycho-analytical conceptualisation focussing on the notion of "picture of the body" and more particularly on the "mirror stage". The symbolizing process has been studied with this outlook in mind and the incidence of the double-sided character of spoken voice (semiotical substratum and support of the verbal symbol) are being viewed through the study of the "poetic art" of some writers

Differences between female and male voices are linked to complex and multidisciplinary issues. The current study focuses on phonetic and psycholinguistic aspects. The first chapter is a literature review of the field. The second chapter presents an acoustic analysis of dissyllabic words produced by Northeastern American English speakers and Parisian French speakers. Resonant frequencies, mean F0, F0 range, VOT, H1-H2 intensity differences and words’ durations were measured. Significant cross-gender differences were obtained for each tested parameter. Moreover, cross-language variations were observed. The same recordings were then used in gender identification from speech experiment. It was conducted jointly on Parisian French native listeners with French stimuli, and on American English listeners with English stimuli. Listeners had to identify the speaker’s gender and indicate their degree of certainty. Considering the acoustic analysis performed on the stimuli, it was found that American English and French listeners did not use the same strategies. The fourth and last chapter is dedicated to a word spotting experiment, conducted with French native speakers. Results suggest that these two types of voice are processed equally fast. To conclude, it appears that cross-gender acoustic differences and listeners' strategies in gender identification from voice are strongly language dependent and therefore socially constructed. Research perspectives and practical applications are proposed

Voice sounds in space but takes place in time. Music is an art of time even if wroten in space. Voice causes effects on bodies (Sufi) and souls. Through a few poetic experiences we can see how voice and writing are bounded together and the result is the body which is a special relationship between time and space

As a consequence of a reflection on the nature of the voice in vocal works after 1945, the aim of this work is to expose, through the study of works by composers of the same avant-garde school, various, broadened vocal practises. The issue is considered from two different angles : - the voice as raw material, within the framework of two traditional categorie : monody and polyphony, - the voice in its relationship to language, a subject about wich several theoretical attitudes ha e been so far defended. This dichotomy which has traditionally been respected (oice as music vs. Voice as language), and which has been adopted in the divisions of this work, has re ealed its own gaps and breaking points. Thus, we shall find in voice - not reduced to song (whose main role is to sustain a sound) but apprehended as a whole, embracing speech, language, music and noise together - that which consistantly makes it heterogeneous in itself, as in a continuous variation

The purpose of this work is to study the functioning of the different voices of the latin verbal system : active and passive voices, deponent verbs, pronominal structures. We will examin the way in which the verbal morphems -endings and suffixes -*to- and -*ndo- - are significant of the semantic connectio (or diathesis) which is established between verbs and substantive nouns

This study considers the narrative and poetic works of the Spanish writer Manuel Rivas. Through a literary and psycho-analytical approach, it underlines the author’s concern for the Inner Self. He endeavors to penetrate its secrets written in him as on a palimpsest. The writer carries out that introspection in Galicia, the land where he was born in 1957, and which, in his writings, becomes a “global village” –an archetype of the world giving in to globalization and of a cosmos made of multiple intertwined strata-. In that singular context aiming at Universality, individuals open themselves up in the midst of their everyday life, they lavishly express themselves in words that the writer uses to build up a poetics of the oral language and weave an aesthetics of meanings and sensations. These words telling anxiety, desires, dreams and nightmares eventually shape out a geographical survey of the human soul, taking its roots in childhood and stressing the importance of Father and Mother imagos which have been revealed through the image of the double, the water and earth motifs, or that of emigration

A tragic but largely unknown episode for the Western public--and highly distorted on the Soviet side--the siege initiated by the Germans and their allies that Leningrad underwent for almost 900 days is a privileged observation field for studying the reaction of individuals to a context of extreme violence and pressure (the war, the blockade, Stalinism). The many personal diaries kept by the besieged --an extremely rich but still underexploited source--allow one to penetrate into their mental universe and thereby offer an invaluable insight not only on the history of the siege of Leningrad but more generally on the intimate experience of the Stalinist era in times of war. On one hand they let one see the role of diaries in infrahuman conditions (survival writing and testimonial aspect) and bring to light a singular way of narrating this experience (mass death, starvation, disorientation), joining as such the realm of disaster literature. On the other hand, they show the complex way Soviets react to a propaganda-filled ideological environment. The articulation of the three pillars of the Soviet ideology (collectivism, internationalism, heroism) by the diarists reveals a permanent tension between intimate and official discourses. It manifests itself by a wide spectrum of different stands, from total discredit to the internalizing the voice of the power. As such, the personal diaries allow us to refine our comprehension of the intimate experience of Stalinism, whose study often remains restricted to the 1930s

Starting from the double meaning of the latin word uates, this study aims to define the links between poetry and prophecy in Lucan’s Pharsalia. Since Antiquity indeed, the prophet has been both a soothsayer and a person speaking for somebody else, especially for a god. First, we build a typology of the prophetic figures in the Pharsalia and we compare them with literary characters from epic and tragedy. Lucan conjures three kinds of prophets : omniscient ones, prophets who use divinatory technics (e.g. astrology, haruspicy, enthusiasm) and those whose inspiration comes from the Underworld. We then look at the prophetic speeches delivered by the characters against the oracular voice of the epic narrator. We study narrative prolepses of the epic that anticipate Roman history (especially the history of the Civil Wars), and through which Lucan offers a cyclical vision of history. After defining the prophetic matter of the narrative voice, we analyse Lucan’s prophetic manner from a narratological and a stylistic perspective. Lastly, we switch from a poetic definition of prophetic voices in the Pharsalia to a metapoetic study. The prophet characters indeed serve as surrogates of the poet and literally utter his voice, thus referring to the etymology of the word. The role of Lucan’s prophets is therefore to formulate an Ars poetica, in accordance with the poet’s Weltanschauung – a vision articulated by an aesthetics of disruption which encapsulates the celestial macrocosm, the organic microcosm and the epic hexameter

This study focuses mainly on the work of the African-American woman writer Toni Morrison. Its aim is to show how Morisson's writing of black bodies and of the African-American heritage, as well as her creation of a unique tragic voice, make hers a forbidden voice, a literary voice of memory (or rememory) and pain, struggling to be heard against the forces of suppression and oblivion. To each of these three themes-the body, the Afro-American heritage, the tragic voice a chapter of this study is devoted. The literary commentary of long extracts from the novels is the main feature of this dissertation, my hope being that such literary analyses may more specifically highlight the subtlety of Toni Morrison's work on language. Throughout these three chapters, other authors (African-American or not)are also the object of textual analysis, either because their voices enter in a call-response pattern with Morrison’s or, on the contrary, because they are emblematic of what Morrison writes against, of what she revises. In singling out writers who have chosen very similar themes, my point is to underline the marked differences in literary or ideological treatment that appear when their work is read in parallel with Morrison’s texts. The last chapter asks the question: "is there such a thing as a black voice?" in order not to avoid the question of the ethnicity of black literature. Without reducing black literature to the linguistic or sociological features it comprises, this chapter attempts to chart the already rich literary tradition that the black voice has behind it, a tradition which, thanks to the writers studied here, arches likes a rainbow from the fertile past into a glorious future

VoIP networks are in a major deployment phase and are becoming widely accepted due to their extended functionality and cost efficiency. Meanwhile, as VoIP traffic is transported over the Internet, it is the target of a range of attacks that can jeopardize its proper functionality. Assuring its security becomes crucial. Among the most dangerous threats to VoIP, failures and bugs in the software implementation will continue rank high on the list of vulnerabilities. This thesis provides three contributions towards improving software security. The first is a VoIP specific security assessment framework integrated with discovery actions, data management and security attacks allowing to perform VoIP specific assessment tests. The second contribution consists in an automated approach able to discriminate message signatures and build flexible and efficient passive fingerprinting systems able to identify the source entity of messages in the network. The third contribution addresses the issue of detecting vulnerabilities using a stateful fuzzer. It provides an automated attack approach capable to track the state context of a target device and we share essential practical experience gathered over a two years period in searching for vulnerabilities in the VoIP space

The relation between the phonetic properties and phonological features are the object of many theoretical propositions. This thesis focus on the relationship between consonant and vocalic durations and the voicing feature of the consonant in French. Our objective is to investigate the impact of the phonatory organ and the phonatory source on the segmental durations. We suppose that the systematic differences in the segmental lengths correlative to voicing are not determined only by physiological constraints but could be phonologized. We have selected five kind of phonations : normal (modal and whispered) and pathological (Tucker, esophageal and pseudo-whispered voices). We observe that whatever the source (periodic vs noisy) the results show similar time differences between voiceless vs voiced consonants, and, between vowels preceding voiceless vs voiced consonants. Concerning the impact of the phonatory organ, in pathological phonations (esophageal and pseudo-whispered speech), the differences in segmental durations are reduced but not neutralized. This would indicate that, although these systematic variations are partly induced physiologically, they remain robust to change in the both phonation conditions (normal and pathological). We can therefore assume that the segmental durations covariant with voicing can constitute linguistic information represented at the phonological and / or lexical level, thus joining the propositions of phonetically based phonological models and less abstractionist models

This thesis develops a study of Renaissance lace as a built writing inlacemakers performance from Monteiro (Paraíba-Brasil) by the followingobjectives: gather information about historical, social, artistic and commercialaspects of the lace activity in Europe, consindering in this path Renaissancelace presence in Paraíba. Based on the concept of deterritorialization (DELEUZE; GUATTARI, 1995), nomadism (MAFFESOLI, 2001), and voice and performance (ZUMTHOR, 1993). It was analyzed the lace production and recreation by lacemakers of Monteiro handicraft workers association – ASSOM, at the lacemaking know-how, also about three generations of a lacemaker family. Cultural emphasis (GEERTZ, 1989), identity (CASTELLS, 2000) and collective memory aspects (HALBWACHS, 2004) are given at lacemaking and teaching learning of this art, also deepening this work on a previously initiated research about Renaissance lace in Monteiro. It was observed its maintenance through generations, with stitches considered traditional and the process of (re)creation of new ones compared to images of Renaissance lace stitches produced in France in the beginning of the 20th century. The history of Renaissance lace including its trajectory in Paraíba Cariri is rebuilt. Based on the theories mentioned above and on a field research guided by Oral History (THOMPSON, 1998) and by the ethnography (LÉVI-STRAUSS, 1996), testimonials and conversations were recorded (and/or filmed) with Renaissance lacemakers from Cariri in Paraíba, and included French, Italian and Belgian ones. The stitches were registered on photographies. The analysis results of the theorical and practical information shows lace deterritorialization in actions such as exodus, immigration, and in ways of commercialization. The lacemaker voices that are placed in the shapes of stitches and drawings reveal culture, memory and identity of the lacemaker woman. Lace became artistic language, which involves knowledge sharing by the voice in performance in an action that makes possible lace teaching and learning, and also creating (and recreating) the stitches. They get into interaction, communication and bring in their shapes oral texts that talks about what being a lacemaker is. They show off a reading about creation, the weave, the surviving and the love for their art. At each created or recreated stitch, a lacemaker rewrites her life history and her mark on the cloth tread. Thus, Renaissance lace express in an image that complete the lacemakers oral text their construction as a writing

This thesis investigated the effects, the responsiveness, the characteristics of maternal voice speaking and singing to preterm infants in NICU.In Study 1 we investigated the effects of live maternal speaking and singing on physiological parameters of preterm infants in the NICU and to test the hypothesis that vocal stimulation can have differential effects on preterm infants at a behavioural level. Methods: Eighteen mothers spoke and sang to their medically stable preterm infants in their incubators over 6 days, between 1 and 2 pm. Heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation (OxSat), number of critical events (hypoxemia, bradycardia and apnoea) and change in behavioural state were measured. Results: Comparisons of periods with and without maternal vocal stimulation revealed significantly greater oxygen saturation level and heart rate and significantly fewer negative critical events (p < 0.0001) when the mother was speaking and singing. Unexpected findings were the comparable effects of maternal talk and singing on infant physiological parameters and the differential ones on infant behavioural state. Conclusion: A renewed connection to the mother’s voice can be an important and significant experience for preterm infants. Exposure to maternal speech and singing shows significant early beneficial effects on physiological state, such as oxygen saturation levels, number of critical events and prevalence of calm alert state. These findings have implications for NICU interventions, encouraging maternal interaction with their medically stable preterm infants. In Study 2 we aimed (1) to examine qualitative change in maternal infant-directed singing and speaking, prior to a positive behaviour display by the preterm infants (i.e. eye opening and lip-corner raising), (2) to analyse the effects of the two behaviours on concomitant acoustic characteristics of maternal infant-directed vocal communication (IDVC), (3) to determine whether changes in maternal voice quality persist after the infant’s positive behavioural display. Methods: Participants included 10 mothers who were asked, on different occasions, to speak and sing to their medically stable infants in incubators, 128 vocalization extracts were examined. Results: The maternal voice shows specific characteristics in terms of fundamental frequency minimum (F0min) during the 5 seconds before the positive reactions of newborns. Mothers raised their pitch in presence of infant’s positive behaviour, especially during the speaking stimulation, reinforcing the higher pitched ID speech. Moreover, the variance of the F0 (F0sd), increases in particular in the maternal speaking, when the infant opens the eyes. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the preterm hospitalized infants’ positive displays, in the context of interactions, can evoke in mothers early forms of attachment, measured by the increase of the characteristics of Infant Directed Speech. In particular the F0min has a crucial role for detecting maternal emotional responsiveness in contingent vocal interactions. In the third part we aimed to analyse, with qualitative methods, the interaction between mothers and preterm infants. We will analyse three different situations in which mothers and preterm infants interact. The three sequences will present (a) a case of intermodal imitation, where the mother accompanies through voice and facial imitation postural change of the newborn; (b) an interactive sequence in which we can identify a moment of eye contact between the two partners, which is interrupted and regulated by the premature baby. The third microanalysis (c) aims to show the acoustical features of a vocal interaction bertween adults (mother and father) and their preterm infants

The aim of the present study is to describe the three uses of the passive voice (morphological passive diathesis, complementary diathesis and expression of a final state), to study the conditions and the restrictions for their use and to suggest reasons why speakers choose to use 1ʿ) the passive rather than the active voice (expression of a given perspective, structuring of information for textual cohesiveness or emphasis, omission of the agent, specification of the real degree of agentiveness of the agent) and 2ʿ) a given use of the passive voice as opposed to another (indistinctiveness of the modal values of obligation / possibility, specification of the aspectual perspective for the process or expression of a final state). The choice of the mode of presentation varies according to the communicative intent of the speaker, who may try 1ʿ) to facilitate decoding by his/her interlocutor by reinforcing the semantic cohesiveness of his/her message or by eliminating some interference that might prevent effective communication, 2ʿ) to complicate his/her task by omitting or delaying the expression of important units of information, 3ʿ) to allow him/her to save face by weakening the abruptness of an order. Our approach is fundamentally onomasiological. The theoretical framework is that of textual linguistics and pragmatics
Ji, Keping. "La voix du féminin chez Le Clézio." Paris 8, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA084195.
In the works of Le Clézio, the female characters have been staying under the male characters for a long time and are usually put as the background to make the stories more interesting. But gradually there is a change that the females are not only the main characters but the principal ones. This study, divided in three parts, proposes a thorough study of the voice of the female in Le Clézio’s works. First of all, it’s the voice of “the Other” which expresses itself in silence, then it brings hope by importing the precious values of non-western cultures; secondly, it’s the voice of the origin, because on one hand, the female characters have a very close link to the goddesses in different civiliasations’ cultures; on the other hand, the essence of the female is linked to the four elements : earth, water, wind and fire – which are the elementary forces of the cosmos; and finally, it’s the resonant voice in the transmission and in the writing which brings forward the oral tradition and the music of the words. In brief, the voice of the female in Le Clézio’s works can be seen as a probable meeting, a way of returning to the origin and an esthetical choice in art creation. From the three perspectives, the females’ voice may be presented as a privilege in which the novelist can carry on his quest in his literature as in his real life

The works of henry green, the works of the eye and the voice, revolve around four themes : the world is a labyrinth of signs in which looking and speaking are reduced to mere impulses, to such a point that the character of the novels is always at a loss and in quest of an impossible relationship. Time is also a maze : life, from birth until death, is bound by violence and memory caught in the meshes of fantasy. Desire is the only cure : the characters' sexuality is nonetheless founded on a form of primitive violence that transforms women into vampires and men into their willing victims. Writing is for the author a means to take into account and transform this difficulty to live with others : green uses strategies of avoidance and erasure in the text in order to seal a most secret pact : that of the author with the reader through the prism of the text
Joo, Suk Hee. "Marguerite Duras : la voix, le cri, l'écriture." Paris 7, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA070066.
What does it mean when Marguerite Duras says she is "making literature"? With this unusual phrase, the writer tells us abourt her activity as a creator, and induces us to explore her writing as a practice, which is not restricted to literary production. Marguerite Duras's works often share their origin, main theme or characters, so that their author switches from one artistic field to another to adapt them, constantly moving from novel to film or theatre play through the process of rewriting. This is not about retelling the same story, but rather creating something always new according to each specific medium, and therefore enhancing the writing act as performance. Voice is an important feature of this writing process, because "writing" doesn't mean to Marguerite Duras just what it usually means : it is also a way of "voicing", be it the character's voices, anonymous voices or the author's voice. To this extent, voice is to Marguerite Duras an essential part of writing as an act of remembrance
Dusong, Emma. "Chanter les transformations : voix, performance, vidéo, film." Amiens, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011AMIE0020.
To sing is to favour a dialogue with the world. One must take a breath to produce a vocal sound- this connects the action of singing to the action of living. Emphasizing the verb to live/ to sing (rather than the noun life/ song) underscores an action that pulsates at the heart of contemporary art and examines the adoption of a practice usually restricted to the musical field. The exhibition space commits new modes of reception: voices rise to accompany transitions and difficulties. From birth to death, from childhood to adulthood, one sings in videos, sound pieces, films. . . . Singing keeps one company during periods of vulnerability. At the core of the voice, artists play and thwart expectations and undertake transformations. This thesis is based on personal practice, giving the leading role to the works describred and studied from the perspective of singing

Willa Cather was a regular operagoer and her fiction is peopled with singers. Although critics have been interested in the musical references scattered throughout her works, a full-length study of voice has never been undertaken. Voice is an elusive object, poised between body and language, humanity and animality, nature and culture. All of its manifestations in Cather’s texts are here examined, from opera singing to coughing to laughter and regional accents. The first part starts with the young writer’s discovery of the exceptional voices of the stage and emphasizes its embodied nature. The second part changes course radically by looking at jarring, inadequate, or rejected voices, uncovering the ways in which these supposedly escapist works grapple with society and the movements of history. The third and final part tackles those novels in which the voice’s signified proves elusive, leading us to question the voice’s ability to refer to anything other than itself. The pessimism apparent in Cather’s later novels is accompanied by a crisis of representation, which the voice is both a symptom of and an antidote to, as the jouissance provided by sounds serves to mask the failure of the signifier

In this dissertation, divided in two distinct parts, I examine firstly the ambiguousdefinition/interpretation of the term φωνασκός (lat. phonascus) which we commonly understand tomean a teacher of singing or recitation or declamation, or simply, a voice coach. This term first appearsin Latin texts that date from the second half of the 1st century A.D. In Greek, it emerges some yearslater, at the very beginning of the 2nd century. Unfortunately, we do not possess an ancient definition ofthis term. All the relevant sources, literary, medical and inscriptional are studied closely in order toundertake a presentation of the historical evolution of this term/profession. A prosopographiaphonascorum is also provided. The second part of this dissertation concerns generally the vocal art andmore precisely the profession of the singer. In addition, I propose an interpretation of some terms relatedto the human voice, which probably constituted a special vocabulary (slang) of the professionalmusicians, as well as the most important attested vocal exercises of the Greco-Roman antiquity. Thecases of eunuch-musician, of the stage fright as well as of the profession of the professionalmourner (θρηνῳδός) are also discussed
