BackgroundInterpersonal functioning is central to social anxiety disorder (SAD). Empirical examinations of interpersonal behaviors in individuals with SAD have frequently relied on analogue samples, global retrospective reports and laboratory observation. Moreover, research has focused on avoidance and safety behaviors, neglecting potential links between SAD and affiliative behaviors.MethodThe influence of situational anxiety and emotional security on interpersonal behaviors was examined for individuals with SAD (n=40) and matched normal controls (n=40). Participants monitored their behavior and affect in naturally occurring social interactions using an event-contingent recording procedure.ResultsIndividuals with SAD reported higher levels of submissive behavior and lower levels of dominant behavior relative to controls. Consistent with cognitive–behavioral and evolutionary theories, elevated anxiety in specific events predicted increased submissiveness among individuals with SAD. Consistent with attachment theory, elevations in event-level emotional security were associated with increased affiliative behaviors (increased agreeable behavior and decreased quarrelsome behavior) among members of the SAD group. Results were not accounted for by concurrent elevations in sadness or between-group differences in the distribution of social partners.ConclusionsThese findings are consistent with predictions based on several theoretical perspectives. Further, the present research documents naturally occurring interpersonal patterns of individuals with SAD and identifies conditions under which these individuals may view social interactions as opportunities for interpersonal connectedness.

Objectives: Adolescents who engage in unhealthy behaviors are particularly vulnerable to anxiety. We hypothesized that participation in physical activity could influence the relationship between anxiety and unhealthy behaviors in adolescents. These behaviors include smoking, alcohol consumption, and unsafe sexual activity. Methods: This study included 50 301 students from the first year of middle school to the third year of high school, all from Korea. The unhealthy adolescent behaviors examined included current alcohol consumption, current smoking, and unsafe sexual behavior. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire (GAD-7).Results: The participants had a mean age of 15.19 years and an average GAD-7 score of 4.23. No significant differences were observed in GAD-7 score among exercising participants when categorized by smoking status (<i>p</i>=0.835) or unsafe sexual behavior (<i>p</i>=0.489). In contrast, participants in the non-exercise group who engaged in these behaviors demonstrated significantly higher GAD-7 scores (<i>p</i><0.001 and 0.016, respectively). The only significant interaction was found between unsafe sexual behavior and exercise (<i>p</i>=0.009). Based on logistic regression analysis, within the non-exercise group, significant positive associations were observed between current smoking and anxiety (odds ratio [OR], 1.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18 to 1.57), as well as between unsafe sexual behavior and anxiety (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.73). However, within the exercise group, no significant association was found between anxiety and either smoking or unsafe sexual behavior. Furthermore, no significant interaction was observed between unhealthy behaviors and exercise. Conclusions: These findings are insufficient to conclude that physical activity influences the relationship between unhealthy behaviors and anxiety.

Movement behaviors have been associated with mental health. The purposes of this study were to examine the association between movement behaviors and scores of depression/anxiety among adolescents and to determine the difference in depression/anxiety associated with reallocating time between different movement behaviors. This cross-sectional study included 217 Brazilian adolescents (15 to 18 years old, 49.3% female). Adolescents wore an accelerometer for one week to assess the four-movement behaviors which include sleep, sedentary behavior (SB), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). The depression/anxiety score was calculated by factor analysis using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. Compositional data analyses were used to examine the association between movement behavior and the depression/anxiety score. Compositional isotemporal substitution models estimated the change in depression/anxiety score associated with reallocating 10, 30, and 60 min between movement behaviors. The composition of movement behaviors was significantly associated with depression/anxiety scores (p < 0.05). Replacing time from SB to LPA was associated with improvement in the depression/anxiety score, while the inverse was associated with an increase in this score. Replacing time of LPA with MVPA was associated with worsening in the depression/anxiety score. The 24-h time distribution of the day may play a crucial role in mental health. Compositions with more time spent in LPA at the expense of less SB are associated with improvement in the scores of depression/anxiety. The type of MVPA may moderate its effects on depression/anxiety in adolescents. Holistic interventions including the full range of movement behaviors may be a gateway to reduce the levels of depression/anxiety in adolescence.

Understanding the interplay between discrete emotions and COVID-19 prevention behaviors will help healthcare professionals and providers to implement effective risk communication and effective risk decision making. This study analyzes data related to COVID-19 posted by the American public on Twitter and identifies three discrete negative emotions (anger, anxiety, and sadness) of the public from massive text data. Next, econometric analyses (i.e., the Granger causality test and impulse response functions) are performed to evaluate the interplay between discrete emotions and preventive behavior based on emotional time series and Google Shopping Trends time series, representing public preventive behavior. Based on the textual analysis of tweets from the United States, the following conclusions are drawn: Anger is a Granger cause of preventive behavior and has a slightly negative effect on the public’s preventive behavior. Anxiety is a Granger cause of preventive behavior and has a positive effect on preventive behavior. Furthermore, preventive behavior is a Granger cause of anxiety and has a negative and lagging effect on anxiety. Exploring how discrete emotions, such as anger and anxiety, affect preventive behaviors will effectively demonstrate how discrete emotions play qualitatively different roles in promoting preventive behaviors. Moreover, understanding the impact of preventive behaviors on discrete emotions is useful for better risk communication.

Exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-established treatment for anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in youth. Although a majority of youth respond to CBT, a substantial portion remain symptomatic and/or experience a return of symptoms after completing a course of treatment. This highlights the need for further improvements to this evidence-based treatment. Given that parent behaviors can negatively influence treatment, addressing parental behaviors in CBT serves as a novel and promising treatment target to improve youth's therapeutic outcomes. The authors review three common parent behaviors that influence anxiety and treatment outcomes: family accommodation, parent anxious behaviors, and management of disruptive behaviors. The authors then discuss each behavior, its effect on anxiety/OCD and treatment, and how to address the behavior within the context of CBT. In doing so, therapeutic learning can be optimized to improve CBT outcomes for youth with anxiety disorders and/or OCD.

Autism spectrum disorder and anxiety are highly comorbid conditions. Understanding the underlying traits of anxiety in autism spectrum disorder is crucial to prevent and treat it efficiently. Hence, this study determined whether social communication difficulties or restricted repetitive behaviors are stronger risk factors for anxiety symptoms in autistic adults in a large cohort. Data on 742 autistic adults from the Netherlands Autism Register were included in the study. Hierarchical regression was implemented to evaluate whether social communication difficulties (Autism-Spectrum Quotient social behavior factor) and restricted repetitive behaviors (Adult Routines Inventory) were predictive of anxiety (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) controlling for age and sex. When considered together, restricted repetitive behaviors stood out as significant positive predictors of anxiety symptoms (lower-order restricted repetitive behaviors, β = 0.32, p < 0.001; higher-order restricted repetitive behaviors, β = 0.15, p = 0.001), whereas social communication difficulties did not ( β = 0.06, p = 0.11). Sex did not moderate these associations ( p > 0.05). Non-social autistic traits are stronger predictors of anxiety symptoms than social traits in autistic adults. Increased attention to restricted repetitive behaviors should be given to improve current support programs for autistic adults with anxiety and to identify autistic individuals at risk.

Two experiments examined Smoll and Smith’s (1989) model of leadership behaviors in sport. The coaching behaviors of a male head coach of a collegiate women’s basketball team (n=11 players) were examined. The data supported competitive trait anxiety as an individual-difference variable that mediates athletes’ perception and evaluation of coaching behaviors. There also was support for adding athletes’ state cognitive anxiety, state self-confidence, and perception of the coach’s cognitive anxiety to the model as individual-difference variables. Athletes who scored high in trait anxiety (p<.001) and state cognitive anxiety (p<.05) and low in state self-confidence (p<.05), and athletes who perceived the coach as high in state cognitive anxiety (p<.001), evaluated coaching behavior more negatively. Game outcome may influence the effect of self-confidence in mediating athletes’ perception and evaluation of coaching behaviors. Additionally, athletes perceived several specific coaching behaviors more negatively than did the coach, and athletes drastically overestimated their coach’s self-reported pregame cognitive and somatic anxiety and underestimated his self-confidence. Overall, the results suggest that coaches should be more supportive and less negative with high anxious and low self-confident athletes.

Most children experience significant anxiety during the preoperative period. Greater preoperative anxiety may be related to a higher incidence of negative behaviors. This study aimed to develop a family-centered preoperative preparation program and to evaluate the effects of this program on children’s preoperative emotional behaviors, postoperative behavior, and posthospital behavior, and on caregiver anxiety. A prospective, randomized controlled study was conducted. The population consisted of children who underwent minor surgery and their caregivers. The control group received standard care, and the experimental group received standard care plus preoperative preparation, which included a tour, a cartoon video depicting a boy’s surgical journey, and familiarization with medical equipment. Children’s emotional behaviors and caregiver anxiety were measured at the preoperative visit, in the preoperative holding area, and at induction of anesthesia. Postoperative behavior was measured when children were in the recovery room, and the researcher also contacted caregivers 2 weeks after the surgery to assess the children’s behavior at home. A linear mixed-effects model results showed that as the surgery approached, the experimental group had fewer and more stable preoperative emotional behaviors (least squares means of preoperative emotional behaviors from preoperative visit to induction of anesthesia = 10.01-10.95). However, the control group exhibited significantly increased preoperative emotional behaviors as the surgery approached (least squares means of preoperative emotional behaviors from the preoperative visit to induction of anesthesia = 7.87-12.23). Family-centered preoperative preparation can effectively improve children’s negative emotional behaviors from their time in the preoperative holding area to the induction of anesthesia.

The increasing awareness of the prevalence, impairment, and long-term consequences of childhood anxiety disorders have led investigators to explore psychosocial factors in the etiology of these disorders. Recent investigations have begun to focus on family-level processes in the etiology and/or maintenance of childhood anxiety disorders, specifically patterns of parent-child interaction. The present study compared parent-child interactions across three problem-solving tasks of clinically anxious children and their mothers versus non-referred children and their mothers in terms of: 1) direct observation measures, 2) children's, mothers', and independent observer's subjective ratings, 3) and children's evaluations using videotape-aided thought reconstruction. Results suggested that the mothers of clinically anxious children engaged in fewer positive and more negative parenting strategies as compared to the mothers of non-referred children across three tasks. Although not significant, trends were evident among the subjective ratings reported by the clinically anxious children, mothers, and observer for the global perception indices. When videotape-aided thought reconstruction was used as a cue to elicit children's perceptions of the parent-child interactions, clinically anxious children reported less mother-referent positive statements and more mother-referent negative statements than non-referred children.

The aim of this study was to examine the association between parent and child anxiety sensitivity in the context of parenting behaviors, specifically by testing parenting behaviors as moderators or mediators of the association between parent and child anxiety sensitivity. Past research implies that parent anxiety sensitivity may be more related to child anxiety sensitivity (moderation) in girls and in the context of certain parenting. Alternatively, parenting behaviors may better account for the association (mediate) between parent and child anxiety sensitivity. To test the hypotheses 191 families (n = 255 youth aged 6-17 and their parents) completed measures of child anxiety sensitivity (CASI) and parenting (APQ-C), and parents completed measures of their anxiety sensitivity (ASI) and parenting (APQ-P). Hypotheses were tested with hierarchical linear modeling. Results indicated that the child’s gender and the child’s report of their parent’s positive parenting behaviors moderated the association between parent and child anxiety sensitivity.

Objective: Therapeutic processes that occur within session have been identified as a factor that may influence youth anxiety outcomes. The present study examined the relationships between positive and negative youth involvement, therapist therapeutic and nontherapeutic behaviors, and anxiety outcomes. Method: Sixty youth (aged 7-17) received cognitive-behavioral therapy for an anxiety disorder. Weekly session videos were rated by observers. Measures of anxiety severity were completed weekly and at posttreatment. Regression analyses examined the association between therapeutic processes and post-treatment outcomes. Univariate and bivariate latent difference score (LDS) models evaluated whether changes in one factor were prospectively associated with later changes in the same factor and in other factors. Results: Positive youth involvement significantly predicted reduced anxiety severity, greater improvement, and remission of principal anxiety disorder at posttreatment. Youth negative involvement during psychoeducation sessions predicted a reduced likelihood of remission. Therapist therapeutic behaviors during psychoeducation sessions predicted lower anxiety severity, greater improvement, and treatment response. Nontherapeutic behaviors in psychoeducation sessions were associated with increased anxiety severity, less improvement, and a reduced likelihood of treatment response and remission of principal anxiety disorder. When entered simultaneously, only nontherapeutic behaviors were significantly associated with increased anxiety severity. LDS models resulted in poor model fit, thus, the temporal sequence among involvement, therapist behaviors, and anxiety severity was not established. Conclusions: Youth involvement and therapist behaviors are associated with beneficial outcomes. Therapist nontherapeutic behaviors are strongly associated with poorer outcomes. Findings are discussed in relation to previous findings and future directions are proposed.

The present study examined the effect of information about patient's dental anxiety on patient satisfaction, patient discomfort, and patients' perceptions of dental student behaviors. The validity of patients' perceptions was examined by independent observation of dental student behaviors on videotaped dental screening visits. Thirty dental students each examined two dentally anxious female patients. Each student received information about one of the patient' s dental anxiety and no information about the other. The order of presentation of the conditions information and no information was counterbalanced. The dependent measures were the Dentist Behavior Checklist, the Dental Visit Satisfaction Scale, the Patient Discomfort Item, and independent observations of seven specific dental student behaviors. Results of the present study suggest that patients' perceptions of specific dental student behaviors are only moderately correlated with independent observation for three of the behaviors. The presentation of information about patient dental anxiety resulted in no significant differences in patients' perceptions of behaviors. A significant interaction effect was found, however, between information and order of presentation for the independent observations of Took Patient Seriously and Was Calm. These findings suggest that when nonverbal behaviors were examined, dental students were more responsive to patients. This was only true, however, when students received information in the Information/No Information order. No significant differences were found in either patient satisfaction or patient discomfort as a result of providing information about patient anxiety. Lastly, none of the dental student behaviors as independently observed were related to patient satisfaction. However, patients' perceptions of Encouraged Questions and Took Patient seriously were significant predictors of patient satisfaction. Suggestions for further research include continued attempts to delineate dentist behaviors which are correlated with patient satisfaction.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of Hurricane Katrina on youth anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms (PTSD symptoms) by examining the roles of pre Katrina youth anxiety, parental anxiety, parental and youth attachment beliefs, and parenting behaviors. Seventy-four youth (ages 6 to 17, mean age: 11.34 years) and their parents were recruited for this study. Youth anxiety was assessed through the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scales (child and parent version). Youth PTSD symptoms were assessed through the PTSD Checklist. Parental anxiety was assessed through the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (anxiety subscale). Child attachment beliefs to their parents were assessed with the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment and parental attachment beliefs to their romantic partner were assessed through the Experiences in Close Relationships. Parenting behaviors were assessed through the Children.s Report of Parent Behavior Inventory. Results indicated that: (1) youth anxiety pre Katrina predicted youth anxiety/PTSD symptoms post Katrina, (2) youth pre Katrina levels of trust, communication, and secure attachment beliefs to mothers moderated the association between youth pre Katrina and post Katrina anxiety, (3) youth pre Katrina perceptions of acceptance moderated the association between youth pre Katrina and post Katrina anxiety, and (4) youth pre Katrina perceptions of firm control moderated the association between youth pre Katrina and post Katrina anxiety. The influence of age, gender, ethnicity, and number of traumatic events experienced in Hurricane Katrina is also presented. Findings are discussed in terms of identifying pre-disaster functioning variables that moderate the association between youth pre Katrina and post Katrina anxiety.

The aim of this study was to examine whether three different psychological predictors; Health anxiety (SHAI), Disgust sensitivity (DS-R) and intolerance of uncertainty (IUS-12) could predict COVID-19-related anxiety in students at Orebro University, Sweden. It was hypothesized that there would be a significant relationship between the three psychological behaviors and pandemic-related anxiety. An online survey, consisting of both standardized and non-standardized questionnaires, was constructed. The survey was completed by 199 participants, aged between 19-48 (M = 25.14 and SD = 5.35) from Orebro University, Sweden through Limesurvey. A correlation revealed that Health anxiety and Disgust sensitivity were significantly correlated with COVID-19-related anxiety. The regression analysis revealed that there was a significance between the three psychological behaviors and COVID-19-related anxiety. In conclusion, Health anxiety, Disgust sensitivity and intolerance of uncertainty, could indeed be associated with COVID-19-related anxiety in the students.

Relatively little is known regarding trait anxiety and its relationship with negative health risk behaviors such as alcohol consumption and physical inactivity in adults. This study aimed to examine whether negative health risk behaviors differ by sex and whether trait anxiety is associated with the negative health risk behaviors above and beyond sociodemographic factors and depression. Data used in the present study came from a published dataset from the Midlife in the United States 2 (MIDUS 2) study and include a sample of 1,054 adults whose age range from 34 to 84 years. There were significant sex differences in alcohol consumption, but not in physical inactivity. Age, sex, BMI, and depression were significantly associated with alcohol consumption or physical inactivity, whereas trait anxiety was not. These results suggest that sociodemographic variables and depression should be taken into consideration when studying negative health risk behaviors.

A substantial literature indicates that children and adolescents living with a depressed caregiver are at increased risk for emotional and behavioral problems. Although parental depression has been shown to have non-specific associations across child problems, researchers have begun to examine whether specific risk factors, such as parental depression, are associated with specific child outcomes, such as child anxiety. Parenting behavior has been identified as one potential mechanism for the transmission of depression and other psychopathology from parent to child. The extant literature supports this mechanism, as the parenting behaviors of mothers with and without a history of depression have been found to differ in important ways. Moreover, two separate literatures suggest that the same parenting behaviors are associated with both parental depression and child anxiety. The current study was designed to extend past research in the areas of parental depression, parenting, and child anxiety by examining parenting behavior as an explanatory mechanism for the association of parental depressive symptoms and child anxiety symptoms. Using a sample of parents with a history of depression and their 9- to 15-year old children, the current study examined four specific parenting behaviors (i.e., hostility, intrusiveness, withdrawal, and warmth), observed in the context of a stressful parent-child interaction task, as mediators of the association between parental depressive symptoms and both parent and child reports of child anxiety symptoms. Limited support was found for the meditational role of specific parenting behaviors in the association of parental depressive symptoms and child anxiety symptoms. Linear mixed-model analyses revealed an inverse and likely spurious relation between parental depressive symptoms and parent report of child anxiety symptoms. A significant positive association also emerged between parental depressive symptoms and observed parental withdrawal. No support was found for the other relations of the proposed mediation model. Possible reasons for the lack of significant findings are discussed.

Up to 65% of pediatric patients experience anxiety and fear in the preoperative period, especially during anesthesia induction. Reasons for this anxiety include the child's perception of the threat of pain, being separated from parents, a strange environment, and losing control. Anxiety and poor behavioral compliance associated with inhalation inductions have been related to adverse outcomes including emergence delirium and maladaptive postoperative behaviors such as general and separation anxiety, eating difficulties, and sleep disturbances. Fortunately, there are behavioral and pharmacological interventions that anesthesiologists can use to improve compliance during induction.

American veterans are vulnerable to high rates of anxiety and substance use. Notably, veterans with mental health challenges report higher rates of cannabis use than those without mental health concerns. In the general population, anxiety often overlaps with a variety of somatic symptoms. However, less is known regarding the effects of both anxiety and somatization on cannabis use behaviors in veterans. Online surveys were completed by 1006 veterans (Mage=34.74, 75.1% male) with a three-month follow-up. Negative binomial regression was used to test whether baseline somatization moderated the relationship between baseline anxiety and frequency of past 30-day cannabis use three months later at follow-up. Compared to those who screened negative, those who screened positive for anxiety reported greater past 30-day cannabis use rates at follow-up (IRR=6.74; 95% CI [4.68, 9.71]). Higher levels of somatization also predicted greater past 30-day cannabis use rates (IRR=1.30; 95% CI [1.24, 1.36]). Somatization moderated the relationship between anxiety and past 30-day cannabis use frequency. At both low and high levels of somatization, those who screened positive for anxiety reported greater cannabis use days compared to those who screened negative for anxiety. However, among those who screened negative for a probable anxiety disorder, an increase in somatization is associated with an increase in past 30-day cannabis use frequency. Findings suggest that those who screen positive for anxiety and those who screen negative for anxiety, but endorse high levels of somatization, may likely benefit most from cannabis use prevention and/or intervention.

Introduction: Stress-related disorders, such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, are a primary reason for treatment (and self-medication) with medical cannabis products. Research suggests endocannabinoids regulate neurotransmitters involved in stress but whether phytocannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) reduce stress behaviors is not fully established. To that end, we sought to examine how CBD with and without other cannabinoids or terpenes might alter behavior in mouse models of short-term and long-term responses to acute stressors. Methods: For short-term stress responses, adult male C57Bl/6J mice received a 30-60-minute restraint stress followed by testing with open field and light-dark box tests. Mice were treated with vehicle, CBD (10mg/kg), or CBD with low dose delta-9-tetrahydrocanabinol (THC, 2.5mg/kg and 7.5 mg/kg CBD for 10mg/kg total cannabinoid content) 45-60 minutes prior to stress exposure. For long-term stress behavior, mice underwent conditioned place avoidance to restraint plus predator odor contexts, with controls receiving individual stressors or no stress. Avoidance to the stress paired context was examined 1, 7, and 28 days later. Groups received vehicle, CBD (3.07 mg/ml CBD, 3mg/kg cannabigerol, low terpenes), CBD+THClo-terp (3.07 mg/ml CBD, 3mg/kg cannabigerol, 0.76 mg/ml THC, low terpenes), or CBD+THChi-terp (3.29 mg/ml CBD, 3mg/kg cannabigerol, 0.76 mg/ml THC, high terpenes) 30-45 minutes after stress exposure. Researchers were blinded to treatment conditions during all analyses. Results: In the short-term experiments, mice treated with CBD trended towards an increase in the time spent and decreased latency to enter the light side of the light-dark box compared to vehicle, suggesting reduced anxiety-like behaviors. Additionally, CBD treated mice showed reductions in freezing, immobility time, and latency to enter the center of the open field compared to vehicle treated mice, with no differences in the time spent in the center of the field. CBD+THC treatment showed no significant differences compared to vehicle. In the long-term experiments, mice exposed to restraint plus predator odor showed reduced time spent in the stress paired chamber on days 1, 7, and 28 post-stress, although there did appear to be stress susceptible and resilient mice in this paradigm. Avoidance behaviors were not seen when stressors were presented individually or if no stress was used. In this paradigm, CBD+THClo-terp was the only treatment to reduce avoidance behavior at the post-stress time points tested. Conclusions: These results suggest that CBD has a differential effect on anxiety-like behaviors based on type of stress, post-stress timing of behavioral testing, and CBD/THC/cannabigerol/terpene content. Further studies are needed to uncover the effect of phytocannabinoids on short-term and long-term stress responses as well as related neurotransmitters and circuitries driving these effects.

Increasing incidences of climate-change-related extreme weather is known to cause risk perception and anxiety. When these psychological reactions lead to proactive behaviors such as an intention to purchase a disaster insurance policy, the psychological reactions are regarded as adaptive. According to the deficit model, information contents should strongly affect psychological reactions and proactive behaviors. However, the causal model postulates that the processing depth of information should affect psychological reactions and proactive behaviors. These models led to an examination of the deficit model in Study 1 and of the causal model in Study 2. In Study 1, 505 participants, who did not have disaster insurance at the time of the study, were randomly assigned to either the informative or less informative condition. Then, they responded to an online questionnaire which included items for demographics, risk perceptions regarding climate-change-related disasters, efficacy in dealing with climate-change-related disasters, anxiety about climate-related disasters, absence of worry about a climate-related disasters, and intention to buy disaster insurance. The results revealed no significant difference between the informative and less informative conditions, implying that the deficit model was not supported. In Study 2, 445 participants, who did not have disaster insurance at the time, were randomly assigned to shallower or deeper processing conditions, and all participants responded to the same questionnaires used in Study 1. The results indicated that risk perception and insurance purchase intentions were higher in the deeper processing condition, implying that the deficit model is partially supported. Taken together, manipulating the manner in which information is processed can be an effective way to promote proactive behavior.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in families self-isolating under incredible stress. Viral containment strategies included school closures with parents left to homeschool their children with few supports from the educational system. Recent data show that those with children at home were more likely to drink heavily during the pandemic (Rodriguez et al., in press). Gaps remain, however, in understanding whether these effects are due to the stresses of homeschooling and whether they extend to cannabis use. Seven-hundred-and-sixty Canadian romantic couples (total N=1520 participants; mean age = 57 years; 50% women) who were self-isolating together during the month of April 2020 were recruited through Qualtrics Panel Surveys. Measures were completed retrospectively in early July 2020; participants were asked to report on their feelings and behavior in April 2020 during lockdown. They completed the GAD-7 (Spitzer et al., 2006) and the PHQ-9 (Kronke et al., 2001) to assess anxiety and depression, brief versions of four subscales of the COVID-19 Stress Scales (Taylor et al., 2020) to assess stress around the pandemic, and the Life Orientation Test – Revised (Chiesi et al., 2013) to assess optimism. They completed a measure of role strain (Statistics Canada, 2015) and a measure of conflict with their partner (Murray et al., 2003). They also completed a validated measure of cannabis use frequency and quantity (Cuttler et al., 2017), as well as two validated items from the Brief Cannabis Motives Measures (Bartel et al., 2020) to assess cannabis use to cope with depression and anxiety, respectively. All measures were completed for a 30-day timeframe during the month of April. Participants also reported on whether they were homeschooling one or more children in Grade 1-12 during the month of April. Data was analyzed with a one-way (homeschooling group) Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) controlling for group differences in age; a Bonferroni-correction was applied to account for multiple tests. Compared to those who did not homeschool (n=1116), those who did homeschool (n=404) experienced significantly more depression (p=.001), more COVID-19-related stress around socioeconomic consequences (p<.001) and traumatic stress (p<.001), and less optimism (p=.002). And those who homeschooled experienced more role strain between their home and work responsibilities (p<.001) and more conflict both toward and from their partner (p’s<.001) than those who did not homeschool. Those who homeschooled also used cannabis significantly more frequently in the month of April than those who did not homeschool (p=.003). Compared to cannabis users who did not homeschool (n=122), cannabis users who did homeschool (n=61) reported more frequent cannabis use to cope with both depression and anxiety (p’s = .003). These findings suggest that unintended consequences of our societal viral containment strategies include more depression, pessimism, role strain, inter-parental conflict, and certain COVID-related stresses, and extend to more frequent cannabis use to cope with negative affect, among parents required to homeschool during the pandemic. These unintended mental health and substance misuse consequences for parents need to be considered when planning for an educational strategy in the fall and for any future waves of the pandemic.

Purpose: Cannabis Use Disorders are associated with a quadrupling of the risk of developing depression, and the use of cannabis to alleviate depressive symptoms is increasingly widespread. Despite high rates of cannabis use among individuals with affective disorders, those who suffer from depression do not frequently access traditional treatment. Our prior work has demonstrated that a technology- and social media-assisted intervention combining cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and social media support via Facebook showed promise in changing cannabis use and mood symptoms among depressed individuals with cannabis use disorder (CUD). The current project examined alcohol co-use and anxiety in this population, effectiveness of this approach in changing drinking behaviors and anxiety, and perceived helpfulness of the intervention. Methods: In a 10-week pilot intervention study, adults (N=20) with CUD and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) received an intervention combining computer-assisted CBT/MET targeting depression and cannabis use with peer and therapist support via Facebook, Connected Cannabis Users’ Network for Enhancement of Cognitive Therapy (CONNECT). Self-reported past 30 day alcohol and cannabis use was assessed using a calendar-assisted timeline follow back interview at baseline and treatment-end. Anxiety was measured using the GAD-7. Perceived helpfulness of the intervention was evaluated qualitatively in individual participant interviews. Results: From baseline to treatment-end, CONNECT participants reduced the frequency of both cannabis use (M=24 vs. 8.9 days, p<0.05) and heavy alcohol use (M=1.7 vs. 0.4 days, p<0.05). Anxiety also declined over the course of treatment (M=5.4 vs. 3.2, p<0.05). More than half (57%) of CONNECT participants reported the social media intervention was helpful for their mood as well as cannabis use, and 72% indicated that they would recommend it to a friend. Qualitative data indicate that CONNECT was most helpful in 3 core areas: (1) social support/not feeling alone with their problems, (2) CBT skills training, (3) bolstering motivation to change substance use. Conclusion: Combining technology-assisted and social media interventions may be an effective strategy for populations struggling with concurrent depression and CUD. Beyond primary outcome variables (i.e., depression and cannabis use), participants also reported reductions in heavy alcohol use and anxiety, indicating that this intervention may effectively produce transdiagnostic process changes. In light of the growing demand for telemedicine and digital health interventions in the wake of COVID-19, further research and potential dissemination of this approach appears warranted.

Understanding health-seeking behaviors and their drivers is key for governments to manage health policies. There is a growing literature on the role of cognitive biases and heuristics in health and care-seeking behaviors, but little is known of how they might be influenced during a context of heightened anxiety and uncertainty. This study analyzes the relationship between four behavioral predictors the internal locus of control, impatience, optimism bias, and aspirations and healthcare decisions among low-income women in El Salvador. We find positive associations between internal locus of control and preventive health behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic (use of masks, distance, hand washing, and COVID-19 vaccination) and in general (prenatal checkups, iron-rich diets for children and hypertension tests). Measures of impatience negatively correlate with COVID-19 prevention behaviors and mothers micronutrient treatment adherence for children, and optimism bias and educational aspirations with healthcare-seeking behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some associations were more robust during the pandemic, suggesting that feelings of uncertainty and stress could enhance behavioral drivers influence on health-related behaviors, a novel and relevant finding in the literature relevant for the design of policy responses for future shocks.

This project aims to appraise evidence of the effectiveness of various practices on reducing stress, anxiety, and depression among parents of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The project contains six research articles from both national and international journals. Study designs include one meta-analysis, one randomized controlled trial, one small scale randomized controlled trial, one prospective phase lag cohort study, on pretest-posttest study, and one mixed-methods pretest-posttest study. Recommendations for effective interventions were based on best evidence discovered through quality appraisal and study outcomes. All interventions, except for educational programs and Kangaroo Care, resulted in a statistically significant reduction of either stress, anxiety, and/ or depression. Family centered care and mindfulness-based intervention reduced all barriers of interest. There is strong and high-quality evidence for the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on depression, moderate evidence for the effect of activity-based group therapy on anxiety, and promising evidence for the effect of HUG Your Baby on stress.
