To show how kingship was enacted and materialised in specific contexts within the ‘Gupta Ecumene’, writ large, this article presents a detailed analysis of two sites that served as centres for political performance, devotional practice, and artistic production between the fourth and the sixth century CE: Eran and Sondhni in the Indian heartland of Madhya Pradesh. Eran is commonly held to be a key site for the study of Gupta art and architecture and holds several important inscriptions from the beginning to the end of the Gupta period, including one issued by Samudragupta. Sondhni is marked by two inscribed columns of Yaśodharman, a former Gupta subordinate who challenged the imperial rulers using metaphors borrowed from Samudragupta’s Allahabad Pillar Inscription. Examining these two sites in dialogue presents an opportunity to identify a shared cultural realm in which local polities participated and developed a transregional ‘Gupta’ political discourse. This study normalises a Gupta-centred imperial history and, in doing so, participates in a wider departure from dynastic history by emphasising the ways in which localised polities and rulers negotiated the political idioms of their day, challenged them, and created spaces for innovation.

The Gupta period is called the Golden Age of India's history. In this era of happiness, prosperity and splendor, all arts were equally upgraded. The biggest gift of this era is Ajanta's frescoes. The inaudible works created by painters sitting in deep cenotaphic caves are unmatched. In this, the content and themes were not only taken from the life and Jataka tales of Lord Tathagata, but kept them bound in any limit. In them, hundreds of years of folklore is mirrored like a mirror. In Ajanta, 29 caves have been made by cutting a semi-crescent mountain. It is divided into groups. Among them, the tenth and ninth caves are in the middle group.Most of the pictures of Ajanta caves have been erased, but the remaining ones are amazing. The earliest paintings have the influence of Shung Kala. Lord Tathagata is seated in a view of the ninth cave, King Rani Amatigan and the worshiping monks surround him. Amatyas have turbaned threads at the ends and are wearing heavy jewelery in the hands and neck. With the shapes, they appear to be people of a primitive caste from the south. We can call it the earlier tradition of Ajanta painting. There is more use of gray color in it, but due to the use of natural colors, every object can be seen clearly as above. Due to the lack of bright colors, they reveal the plot seriously and give impetus to its spiritual nature. गुप्तकाल भारत के इतिहास का स्वर्ण-युग कहा जाता है। सुख समृद्धि और वैभव के इस काल में सभी कलाओं का समान रूप से उन्नयन हुआ। इस युग की सबसे बड़ी देन है अजंता के भित्तिचित्र। चित्रकारों ने गहन अधंकरामयी गुफाओं में बैठकर जिन अपार्थिव कृत्तियों का सृजन किया वे अप्रतिम है। इनमें कथावस्तु और विषय तो भगवान तथागत के जीवन और जातक कथाओं से ही लिए किन्तु उन्हें किसी सीमा में बांध कर नहीं रखा। उनमें सैकड़ों वर्षों का लोकजीव दर्पण की भाँति प्रतिबिम्बित है।अजंता में अर्ध-चन्द्राकार पर्वत को काटकर 29 गुफाएँ बनाई गई है। यह समूहों में बंटी हुई है। इनमें दसवीं और नवीं गुफाएँ बीच के समूह में है।अजंता की गुफाओं के अधिकांष चित्र मिट चुके हैं परन्तु जो शेष है वे अद्भुत हैं। सबसे पुराने चित्रों पर शुंग कला का प्रभाव है। नवीं गुफा के एक दृश्य में जो मिट सा गया है भगवान तथागत बैठे हैं, राजा रानी अमात्यगण और उपासक भिक्षु उन्हें घेरे हुए हैं। अमात्यों के सिरों पर लटूदार पगड़ियाँ है और वे हाथों और गले में भारी-भारी आभूषण पहने हैं। आकृतियों से वे दक्षिण की ही किसी आदिम जाति के लोग लगते हैं। इसे हम अजंता चित्रकला की पूर्व परम्परा कह सकते हैं। इसमें धूसरित रंग का प्रयोग अधिक है किन्तु प्राकृतिक रंगों के प्रयोग की वजह से प्रत्येक वस्तु ऊपर वर्णानुसार स्पष्ट नजर आती है। चटख रंग न होने की वजह से यह कथानक को गंभीरता से प्रकट करते हैं और उसके आध्यात्मिक स्वरूप को गति प्रदान करते हैं।

Present study focuses on the new media Installation Art in India, its present scenario, and backgrounds. Essentially installation art has taken its heritage from conceptual art, which came into prominence in 1970s, when the concept or idea was prominent – when an artist uses a conceptual form of art which means that all of the arrangement and conclusion are made previously and the implementation is an obligatory concern. So, spontaneously idea became a machine that makes the art. An idea suddenly pops in his mind and he just implemented it, in his very own way. This kind of art does not narrow itself to gallery spaces and can refer to any materials intervention in everyday public or private spaces. After India became independent, art began to change here. considerately several movements and group bounced up all over the country headed by ambitious young artists with vision of bringing modern art to India. Now the art of India is totally changed. Contemporaries are not bound to use paper and canvas, wall or any other art surfaces. They are not bound to make mythological paintings or sculptures but they are free to do anything, they are free to use any medium, material and space they want. After a European artist Marcel Duchamp’s “ready-mades artist” started exploring the margin of art, trying to eliminate the contrast between art and life. For conceptual artists art need not look like a traditional work of art. Presented study focuses on the installation work of Indian artists. Four artists were selected by the researcher viz. Subodh Gupta, Shilpa Gupta, Bharti Kher and ChintanUpadhaya. Researcher investigates the concepts behind the art work of selected artists, their methods and materials they have used in their art work. The selection of artist in current study is on the bases of their fame and popularity. Method of the current study is analytical.

This essay explores the intersection between art, performance and political agency in the quest for and building of self-identities in two novels by two Britain-based authors of the South Asian diaspora: Sunetra Gupta and Kamila Shamsie. Gupta’s So Good in Black (2009) and Shamsie’s Broken Verses (2005) provide a fertile ground for a critical comparison of the way in which each author understands and deploys the performative relationship between agency, creativity and identity. Following Marvin Carlson’s distinction between ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ perspectives on social performance, the present textual analysis focuses on the fact that Gupta understands individual subjectivities to be overruled and dramatically reshaped by social roles and identifications, whereas Shamsie sees the performative nature of identity as instrumental in the opening up of ‘liminal’ spaces in which identity is negotiated and the process of self-construction can truly take place. This paper aims, therefore, at analysing the discursive strategies through which Gupta’s and Shamsie’s travel writers, actors, poets, dancers and political activists use both onstage and offstage performance to act ‘against’ socio-cultural (de)limitations and impositions and ‘upon’ external and internal realities alike—or fail to do so.

The interaction in the contemporary media art installations can be viewed as a process of transformation as the parts of the installation engage and respond to each other. This paper considers interactive media art as assemblages and argues screens to be gestures of this assemblage. The screens activate and rearrange the relations between the elements of the assemblage by providing multiple connections between them. By examining two artworks, Breath (1991/92) by Ulrike Gabriel and Shadow 3 (2007) by Shilpa Gupta, the paper extrapolates the aesthetic experiences gestured by the screens. This article is an attempt at a critical and interdisciplinary analysis of the idea of the region. The author reviews and summarizes critical views of the idea in the discourses of architecture (Frampton, Koolhaas, Ibelings), art history (DaCosta, Kauffman, Piotrowski), and social anthropology (Gupta, Ferguson, Malkki, Bhabha). He then focuses on the example of the contemporary discourse on power, in which the concept of ‘region’ still functions in the form of implicit premises about the naturalness of differences and territorial and cultural divisions. The example is analyzed through the findings of the research project ‘Regional Foresight for Wielkopolska’ (2009–2011). The author’s conclusion points to the great dissonance between the discourse of modern humanities and the applied discourse of contemporary policy (including regional policy).

AbstractWe present a new set of cosmological Milky Way size galaxy simulations using ART. In our simulations the main system has been evolved inside a 28 Mpc cosmological box with a spatial resolution of 109 pc. At z=0 our systems have an Mvir = 6 − 8 × 1011 M⊙. In several of out models we have observed how a well defined disk is formed inside the dark matter halo and the overall amount of gas and stars is comparable with MW observations. Several non-axisymmetric structures arise out of the disk: spirals, bars and also a warp. We have also observed that a huge reservoir of hot gas is present at large distances from the disk, embedded in the dark matter halo region, accounting for only a fraction of the ”missing baryons”. Gas column density, emission (EM) and dispersion (DM) measure have been computed from inside the simulated disk at a position of 8 kpc from the center and in several directions. Our preliminary results reveal that the distribution of hot gas is non-isotropic according with observations (Gupta et al. 2012, Gupta et al. 2014). Also its metallic content presents a clear bimodality what is a consequence of a recent accretion of a satellite galaxy among others. After a careful analysis we confirm that due to the anisotropy in the gas distribution a new observational parameter needs to be defined to recover the real distribution of hot gas in the galactic halo (Roca-Fàbrega et al. 2016).

Abstract In contemporary artworks of so-called post-media assemblage, screens can be argued to emphasize, interconnect and rearticulate relationships between various parts in various modalities of image-making and display. They can be understood to produce gesturality that maintains conditions of mediality, which is the sustenance of relations between different parts of the media ensemble. This paper is an attempt to understand screens by analysing the gesturality that they propagate and not just facilitate. For this purpose, the paper interrogates the intermediality of screens in contemporary media arts that rely on this gesturality. By closely analysing contemporary media art installations such as Solar Reserve (Tonopah, Nevada) (John Gerrard, 2014) and Shadow 3 (Shilpa Gupta, 2007), this paper elaborates a concept of intermediality as an unfixed state and describes in-betweenness as enabling an openness to continuously form, unform and deform relations with different entities, thereby producing a gestural modality.

Abstract Located in Vidisha District, Madhya Pradesh, the area of Badoh-Pathari is home to a rock shelter with a sculpted panel depicting seven mother goddesses. A weathered inscription next to the sculptures was reported as early as 1926. The inscription is dateable to the fifth century on the basis of its palaeography and the art-historical dating of the site. Though partly effaced beyond hope of decipherment, roughly half of the text can be read with confidence, while some of the rest may be restored conjecturally, and some speculatively. The epigraph pays homage to Rudra and Skanda in addition to the Mothers themselves, and is thus a key resource concerning mātṛ worship in the Gupta period. It mentions the otherwise unknown local ruler Jayatsena of Avamukta (a region also named in the Allahabad pillar inscription), and may refer to the reign of Kumāragupta (I).

Abstract A method to simulate the interactions between kinematic pairs (meshing gears, cams and followers, Geneva mechanisms, etc.) has been described in an earlier paper (Gupta and Jakiela, 1992a). This second paper, through several examples, demonstrates how our representations and algorithms for kinematic simulation and shape synthesis facilitate subsequent reasoning for design tasks. Included are examples of a complex industrially relevant simulation, shape optimization motivated by kinematic behavior, and extensions of the approach for non-fixed-axis members.

Improved rotordynamic stability is desired by end users, and centrifugal compressor manufacturers are expected to meet, if not exceed, this expectation. Compressor manufacturers are required to design and build machines that are rotordynamically stable on the test stand and in the field. Confidence has been established in predicting the excitation forces from seals and bearings, but impeller aerodynamic excitation forces continue to be a challenge. While much attention is paid to impellers from an aerodynamic performance point of view, more efforts are needed from a rotordynamic standpoint. A high-pressure, re-injection centrifugal compressor is analyzed in order to predict rotordynamic stability using the best available resources for seals and bearings. Impeller shroud forces are predicted using the bulk-flow model developed by Gupta and Childs [1]. Each impeller stage is analyzed and an attempt is made to improve the estimation of impeller aerodynamic excitation forces. Logarithmic decrement (log dec) predictions for the full rotor model consisting of all the stages and seals are compared to the full-load full-pressure test measured values using a magnetic bearing exciter. A good correlation is obtained between the measured test results and analytical predictions.

This paper studies the heave of Spar platform hull considering the moonpool water motion. The moonpool of Spar platform is a central opening throughout the cylindrical hull and the guide plate is installed at the bottom of it. If the risers in the moonpool are supported by the tensioner at the top, then the mass of the water in the moonpool is comparable to the platform hull mass and the effect of moonpool water on the platform motion is significant. Gupta et al. (2008) studied the effect of moonpool water on the heave of the Spar platform. In their work the added mass and wave loading are calculated by the Morison approach. The Spar platform is large scale structure. In this paper, the wave loading of platform hull is calculated by potential flow theory and the coupled motion of hull heave and moonpool water is studied. It is found that the hull heave motion will be decreased when the moonpool water motion is considered. This paper will examine the importance of applying scaling to the equations of motion for multibody dynamic systems when applied to industrial applications. If a Cartesian formulation is used to formulate the equations of motion of a multibody dynamic system the resulting equations are a set of differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The algebraic components of the DAEs arise from appending the joint equations used to model revolute, cylindrical, translational and other joints to the Newton-Euler dynamic equations of motion. Stability issues can arise in an ill-conditioned Jacobian matrix of the integration method this will result in poor convergence of the implicit integrator’s Newton method. The repeated failures of the Newton’s method will require a small step size and therefore simulations that require long run times to complete. Recent advances in rescaling the equations of motion have been proposed to address this problem. This paper will see if these methods or a variant addresses not only stability concerns, but also efficiency. The scaling techniques are applied to the Gear-Gupta-Leimkuhler (GGL) formulation for multibody problems by embedding them into the commercial multibody code (MBS) Virtual. Lab Motion and then use them to solve an industrial sized automotive example to see if performance is improved.

Surface micromachined structures with high aspect ratios are often utilized as sensor platforms in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. These structures generally fail by stiction or adhesion to the underlying substrate during operation, or related initial processing. Such failures represent a major disadvantage in mass production of MEMS devices with highly compliant structures. Fortunately, most stiction failures can be prevented or repaired in a number of ways. Passive approaches implemented during fabrication or release include: (1) utilizing special low adhesion coatings and (2) processing with low surface energy rinse agents. These methods, however, increase both the processing time and cost and are not entirely effective. Active approaches, such as illuminating stiction-failed microstructures with pulsed laser irradiation, have proven to be very effective for stiction repair [1–5]. A more recent and promising method, introduced by Gupta et al. [6], utilized laser-induced stress waves to repair stiction-failed microstructures. This approach represents a logical extension of the laser spallation technique for debonding thin films from substrates [7–9]. The method transmits stress waves into MEMS structures by laser-irradiating the back side of the substrate opposite the stiction-failed structures. This paper presents an experimental study that compares the stress wave repair method with the thermomechanical repair method on identical arrays of stiction-failed cantilevers.

Due to the ongoing rather intense development of deep water gas and oil fields, the technical community has been increasingly focusing its attention to the dynamic behavior of Spar floating structures. Spar dynamics exhibits a highly nonlinear behavior due to the presence of various components such as mooring lines, moonpool, and risers (Spanos et al., 2005). In this regard Gupta et al, 2008a, have studied the reduction of the heave response in a single degree-of-freedom spar model due to the oscillations of water entrapped in the moonpool through the partially closed bottom plates. In this paper a novel coupled six-degree-of-freedom analytical model of a Spar system tensioned by TTR risers is proposed. The model accounts for the interactions among spar hull motions (heave, surge and pitch), the riser motion (heave and surge), and the moonpool. This model involves six coupled nonlinear differential equations comprising nonlinearity terms associated not only with stiffness and damping but also with inertia terms. A dynamic analysis is performed by subjecting the model to JONSWAP ocean wave spectrum compatible extreme forces (corresponding to the 100 yr wave); and to moments applied to the center of gravity computed by means of standard motion program. Both numerical and semi-analytical techniques (equivalent linearization including inertial terms) are used for the determination of the response of the proposed dynamic model both in the time and frequency domains. Some parameter study results are reported, including ones pertaining to the dependence of the spar motion on the open guide plates.

The seismic demands of tall buildings can be evaluated by nonlinear response history analysis with some more representative, site-dependent, earthquakes, or by pushover analysis. However, the process of the evaluation is tedious and time consuming. Therefore, it is desirable to have a simplified process that provides quick and reasonable estimates of seismic demands, especially in the stage of conceptual (preliminary) design. Gupta & Krawinkler (2000) has reached on a process in the estimation of roof and story drift demands for frame structures from the spectral displacement at the first period of the structure, through a series of modification factors, accounting for MDOF effects, inelasticity effects, and P-delta effects. It is found that this process can estimate seismic demands reasonably, provided that no negative post-yield story stiffness exists. Also, the modification factors are uniform or with reasonable dispersion, except for structures dominated by higher mode effects. This study has conducted a similar research by performing simulations on Taiwan code–compliant structures of different heights (2,5,10,20 and 30 stories), located in different seismic zones and subjected to sets of local ground motions. The feature of this study is that the seismic demands are estimated from the SRSS of the elastic, modal roof displacements of the structure, instead of the first mode spectral displacement. The simulation results have shown that the modification factors are more promising — uniform or with more reasonable dispersion — even the structure is dominated by high mode effects. Therefore, it is concluded that the process proposed in this study is a feasible method and the modification factors obtained in this study are useful for local engineer in engineering applications.

Abstract In this paper, an algebraic-geometrical method is proposed which unifies the resolution of the circuit defect, and full or partial input link rotatability in mechanism synthesis. The circuit defect is a gross motion defect. Starting from the follower link, the method develops algebraic curves of 20th order (H20 = 0), in a body reference system, which define the boundaries of the regions where the choice of the floating pin of the driving (input) link either would yield a mechanism free of branch and circuit defects, or most likely would yield potential-circuit-defective-mechanisms (PCDM). The point (B) representing the floating pin of the follower (BA) is a quadruple point of this curve. Therefore, polar rays passing through this point (B) yield from H20, effectively, a nontrivial polynomial in one variable of 16th order, thus simplifying the root finding problem. This analytical method also enables the unification of the PCDM regions with the branch defect regions (due to Filemon) and those for the design of mechanisms with transmission angle within prescribed limits (due to Gupta). The main conclusion is that to avoid branch and circuit defects, avoid the Filemon-defective regions as well as the portions of the PCDM-regions which lie in the Filemon-feasible regions. Interestingly, large portions of the PCDM-region are within the Filemon-defective region and are therefore easily excluded. It has been our experience that the circuit defect, which is a gross motion defect, does not occur frequently; in many examples, the entire PCDM-region was contained in the Filemon-defective region. However, the Filemon-feasible region may contain portions of the PCDM-region and this sub-region must be examined for potentially circuit defective mechanisms. The method is developed and illustrated with examples for the planar four-bar mechanisms, some of the numerical aspects of the solution are also discussed here.

Solid handling pumps are used in Sewage applications, Slurry transportation, transportation of floating solids etc. Many manufacturers supply such solid handling pumps for different applications. Few of the manufactures have test facility to study the impact of solid particles on overall performance of pump. It is then possible to experimentally bring out effect of solid size, its concentration etc. on overall performance. The literature is available for several such tests conducted by pump manufacturers. In absence of experimental test facility for solid handling pumps, a numerical approach was proposed to investigate the effect of solid particles on the pump performance. Commercially available CFD tool was used to carry out numerical experiments. A standard pump in production was chosen as a test case. It was ensured that experimental test results of similar size pump are available in literature. The work presented here is the extension of the work done by Gupta Amit for a solid handling impeller [8]. The similar impeller assembled with casing for solid handling pump was analyzed first to compute the performance of whole pump with clear water. This was compared with test results available from factory tests conducted experimentally with clear water. The same geometry was then analyzed using particle tracking drag models available in the software given the new boundary conditions of solid additions. Results from the numerical experiments, including effect of particle size, their concentrations etc were brought out. The particle trajectory from impeller entry to exit of casing gave idea as how particles travel in solid handing pumps. The computational results were compared with the ones presented in the Pump Handbook by Karassik. The software results were useful in getting additional information on loss in impeller and casing separately. This gives a clue to as which component needs improvement. The paper describes the approach used in numerical experiments and the results thereof.

Canada among many other countries is in pursuit of developing next generation (Generation IV) nuclear-reactor concepts. One of the main objectives of Generation-IV concepts is to achieve high thermal efficiencies (45–50%). It has been proposed to make use of SuperCritical Fluids (SCFs) as the heat-transfer medium in such Gen IV reactor design concepts such as SuperCritical Water-cooled Reactor (SCWR). An important aspect towards development of SCF applications in novel Gen IV Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) designs is to understand the thermodynamic behavior and prediction of Heat Transfer Coefficients (HTCs) at supercritical (SC) conditions. To calculate forced convection HTCs for simple geometries, a number of empirical 1-D correlations have been proposed using dimensional analysis. These 1-D HTC correlations are developed by applying data-fitting techniques to a model equation with dimensionless terms and can be used for rudimentary calculations. Using similar statistical techniques three correlations were proposed by Gupta et al. [1] for Heat Transfer (HT) in SCCO2. These SCCO2 correlations were developed at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (Canada) by using a large set of experimental SCCO2 data (∼4,000 data-points) obtained at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) AECL. These correlations predict HTC values with an accuracy of ±30% and wall temperatures with an accuracy of ±20% for the analyzed dataset. Since these correlations were developed using data from a single source - CRL (AECL), they can be limited in their range of applicability. To investigate the tangible applicability of these SCCO2 correlations it was imperative to perform a thorough error analysis by checking their results against a set of independent SCCO2 tube data. In this paper SCCO2 data are compiled from various sources and within various experimental flow conditions. HTC and wall-temperature values for these data points are calculated using updated correlations presented in [1] and compared to the experimental values. Error analysis is then shown for these datasets to obtain a sense of the applicability of these updated SCCO2 correlations.
