Arthuriana has a long history of adaptation and appropriation in medieval and contemporary works, and the tradition of such textual borrowing and reworking continues in contemporary “genre” novels, particularly those that invoke associations with knights, honor, and codes of chivalry. One such example are the novels and short stories of the Dragonlance setting. Sturm Brightblade is positioned as a knight who adheres to a code of honor and is given Arthurian character traits, narrative arcs, and a backstory by the various authors that have fleshed out his history. The present article analyses intertextual references in David Lodge’s Small World. An Academic Romance (1984), focusing on allusions to the corpus of medieval and twentieth-century Arthuriana in the representation of women characters. An analysis of Arthurian allusions in the portrayal of women characters shows that Lodge introduces Arthurian women to his academic ‘Camelot’ in response to medieval and post-medieval literature about King Arthur and the Grail quest. In this respect, his representation of academic women in Small World is different from the way they are described in Lodge’s other

Abstract Pelleas and Ettarde may not be particularly well-known figures today, but in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, following the publication of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s ‘Pelleas and Ettarre’ idyll, they were included or even centred in a number of Arthurian poems, plays and novels. This article explores the changing representations of Pelleas and Ettarde in post-medieval adaptations. Why do writers choose to retell and adapt this story? What kinds of intertextual connections are uncovered by focusing on these particular Arthurian afterlives? And how do modern writers reshape this stor

This article focuses on the presence and the treatment of sound in the killing of the adversary in the Arthurian novel. We begin by establishing a definition of the topos, based on a large list of occurrences, which leads us to see in the sound of the death of the enemy a variation of a larger and more widespread motif. We then study the evolution of this topos from the epic texts to the latest novels. Finally, we notice the significance of these sounds in a family of romances in which authors seem to seek to perpetuate the first forms of the Arthurian story.

Abstract The novels of Kazuo Ishiguro span a variety of literary genres but are unified by a profound interest in the workings of memory. Guided by recent scholarship in the field of cultural memory studies, this essay analyses Ishiguro’s seventh novel, The Buried Giant, in the context of the Middle English romance traditions which it echoes both formally and thematically. In doing so, it argues that the novel’s use of Arthurian myth is a technique by which to illuminate and explore the role of literature in the formation of collective memory and cultural identity.

One of the hallmarks of young adult literature is its focus on adolescent protagonists who struggle to reconcile what they want with what they are supposed to want. Indeed, some of the most enduring works of young adult literature, from L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (2006) to Judy Blume’s Forever (1975), place their young characters at a crossroads between cultural convention and individual desire. Foundational scholarship in the field of young adult fiction has suggested a recurring conflict in novels for young readers in which a protagonist finds himself or herself directly at odds

The article discusses Small World, one of the most popular campus novels by the contemporary author David Lodge. What distinguishes Small World is the theme of academia: nearly all major characters are lecturers in literature. Lodge involves the reader in an intertextual game whose meanings are available only to experts, i.e. lecturers themselves, since most readers may overlook the fact that the novel is a satirical remake of Arthurian romance. The “critical point” mentioned in the title of the article alludes to critical debates in the novel, to a critique of the academic institution as such

This paper aims to analyse and interpret the motif of the long-awaited knight (le chevalier desirré) in two Old French romances of the Round Table: Lancelot by Chretien de Troyes (ca. 1177–1181) and The Quest of the Holy Grail, written in prose by an anonymous author in the first half of the 13th century. Essentially different in their purport and in the portrayal of the Arthurian society, these works display an interesting array of the variants of the motif under scrutiny. In Chretien’s romance the motif of the long-awaited knight gives rise primarily to the effect of surprise and astonishmen

Ce roman arthurien en prose, en langue française, qui a sans doute vu le jour entre 1240 et 1279 en Italie du Nord, ne subsiste qu’à l’état lacunaire dans des compilations et des sommes romanesques postérieures. In his sequence of novels Williams explores the path from the idea of ‘exchange’ to ‘substitution’, and finally to ‘co-inherence’. This chapter shows how the first four novels each take a central symbol around which the plot revolves: successively these are the Arthurian Holy Grail, the Stone of Solomon, the Eagle—archetype of Truth—and the Dance of the cosmos. The predominant idea is the desirability of holding an equilibrium within the movements of time, space, and events. As early as the introduction of the novel, Thomas of Saluzzo combines allegorical discourse with the narrative methods of the Arthurian novel. The allegory thus becomes less abstract; in the light of the previous novels, it becomes more specific and appears more vivid and detailed. Its author has mastered all the poetic techniques and narrative devices of his predecessors, but he has also taken elements from various genres of romance, including chronicle, and welded them to form a vehicle for new values and more subtle suggestions. In “transporting” a contemporary character into ancient Camelot, Twain uses the tale to comment on society and technology in very obvious ways.
