Laughter is a uniform and repetitive physiological act. However, every society codifies and lives laughter in its own way. As a result, it becomes relevant to cultural anthropology. During the patristic age, byzantine civilisation developed a system of representing derision based on the bible and Hellenistic traditions. This system of representation, which justifies certain identity clashes (between Christians and pagans, monks and lay-people, clerics and actors), is evident in the urban world as much as in the ascetic milieu. Finally, the combination of these two symbolic entities leads to rendering derision sacred; the fools-for-the-Christ’s-sake and the saint-mimes are the principal representatives of this phenomenon

One of the major consequences of the collapse of the communist bloc is the emigration of several million people from the former Soviet Union. Israel, with a favourable migration policy for Jewish descendants and their families, welcomes nearly one million of them. Fleeing economic stagnation, ethnic conflicts and anti-Semitism, these immigrants arrive in Israel en masse in a relatively short period of time provoking a "demographic shock". More than twenty years after the beginning of the arrival of these immigrants, this thesis provides an analysis of their integration and a critical study of the choices made by the Israeli leadership that reflect the political, economic and socio-cultural upheavals. Whether at the national or international level, the effects of such a migratory wave continues to be felt fundamentally changing the country and its relationship with other nations and its role in world politics

Joining the UNESCO World Heritage Sites brings economic, social and cultural hope to the local administrators, who are, the most often, at the initiative of the application. As a matter of fact, the enhancement of the heritage carries territorial stakes such as the touristic development of the city or the quality of life improvement for the inhabitants. However, the scientific literature also points out the negative sides of an urban heritage designation, for instance, when in city centres gentrification or “museumification” processes are described. At the crossroads of these aspects, we question the socio-spatial consequences of the heritage activities on the inhabitants, i.e. those who are the main recipients. Our methodological bias was to mobilise a quantitative and qualitative approach to the main recipients (inhabitants, shopkeepers, visitors) in the case of the Episcopal City of Albi (Tarn) registered on the UNESCO’s list of world heritage in 2010. The result of our thesis is to confirm that the socio-spatial consequences of the public heritage action are not unequivocal depending on the stakeholders and the scale of analysis considered. It produces ambivalent effects compared to the goals announced regarding the attractiveness, the inhabitants' implication in the city life and sense of belonging to the city. Likewise, public authorities are not fully able to avoid the heritage activities producing undesired effects on the living conditions of the inhabitants

State intervention in theatrical matters is historically based on the social role played by the "popular theatre" after the second world war. In a context of aesthetic transformations and growing institutionalization, the social function of theatre is objectified in the category of a "public theatre" which is differentiated from the merchant one. Through the analysis of the trajectory of the signers of the Declaration of Villeurbanne in 1968, deemed to have introduced the power to creators in the theatrical field, this thesis questions the social role of theater in a socio-historical perspective. The terms of the engagement with the theatrical field in the social world are analyzed through differnte practices revealing the relation of theatre with the society: the widening of the audience and the coming of new viewers, the constitution of a specific directory, and artists' positions in the public debate are all significant. Correlated to the process of professionalization and institutionalization which crosses the field, the analysis of the evolution of these practices emphasizes the progressive demonetization of the social function of the theater between 1945 and the most recent period. This is especially visible through the establishment of two central figures in the theatrical field, the director and the "programmateur", to the detriment of the cultural leader (the "animateur"). The refocusing of activities on artistic issues contributes to a growing distinction between aesthetic innovation and activities devoted to the relation with the audience. This opposition is objectified by the authorities and contributes to a disqualification of the audience in the process of consecration. The political issue, which originally founded the public theater category, is gradually reinvested in the perspective of an intrinsically emancipatory art

Toumayacha Alakana : this popular expression lays at the root of my research. It means “to look with a veiled head”. It is how the Fuegians named the act of photographing in the19th century, when they saw their first cameras, as operators came to America around 1840.What names did native people give to those new images-cum-objects ? How was that unknown device perceived ? What does it mean to be looked at by a veiled head ? My doctoral research offers a shift of of focus and point of view on the act of photography in South America. Can our understanding of photography change if we take native peoples’ perspective on the camera as a starting point ?The idea that native people do not want to be photographed, especially because it would be “stealing their souls”, is a colonial myth. This western belief gave value to the images brought back by explorers. The reasons behind refusing the camera are much more complex and diverse : they can be about the camera angle, the circulation of the image of the self, the one-sided nature of the transaction, the lack of understanding of the device, or political and spiritual considerations
