Water Quality Index (WQI) has been applying in the present study to assess suitability of groundwater quality for drinking purposes in Amara city, southern Iraq. This was carried out by subjecting twelve groundwater samples, collected from different sites to comprehensive physic-chemical analysis. The study area includes Gazlıgöl (İhsaniye) and its surroundings located approximately 21 km north of Afyonkarahisar province. In this study, it is aimed to determine the hydrochemical properties of the water resources in the study area and their usability for different purposes. With this scope, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), main anion-cation and NO3 contents of a total of 19 groundwater samples in the region were determined. The transformation of the salt-water liman Sasyk into a fresh water reservoir through its separation from the sea by a dam and connection with the Danube by a canal caused certain ecological problems. One of them was that during the first decades the expected water irrigation conditions were not achieved because of salt infiltration from the bottom sediments.
