Анотація:
Regions that have not attained the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone must demonstrate that their transportation plans and programs conform to a state implementation plan to meet national air quality standards. Vehicle emissions are estimated by metropolitan planning organizations for these conformity evaluations, and the state of the practice is to calculate vehicle emissions from the vehicle distances traveled at different speeds. A highway assignment procedure for air quality conformity has been developed at the Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) to provide more detailed estimates of how vehicle distances and speeds vary by time of day and by type of vehicle. The assignment procedure prepares tables of vehicle distances traveled by speed for six classes of vehicles and eight time periods during a typical workday. The eight time period assignments more correctly depict network congestion than the peak—off-peak or average daily highway assignments previously carried out by CATS. The separate vehicle class link volumes reflect the geographic and time period distribution of trips by light- and heavy-duty vehicles. The conformity assignment procedure and the problems encountered in adapting existing highway assignment practices to allow for additional time periods and vehicle classes are outlined. Some conformity assignment results are compared with a daily average assignment to illustrate how the time period assignment procedure affects vehicle emission estimates.

Анотація:
A problem of staff assignment in an organization with multiple assignments of scheduled events is addressed here. The objective is to propose an efficient and practical approach for enhancing a given policy of staff assignments to attain a more efficient operation. To address the problem, a multi-period assignment model formulation is employed here. Using this approach, an efficient heuristic method is devised to obtain enhancements of any given solution policy. A numerical example is provided for clarity in implementing the proposed method. This research is expected to provide a meaningful contribution to managing staff assignments in various types of organizations.

Анотація:
The current tuition policy of the Department of Business Management at the University of South Africa encourages, but does not compel students to submit assignments under the semester system. A relatively small percentage of students submit the voluntary assignment, thereby forfeiting the benefit of the learning experience and assessment feedback from the respective lecturers. The Department of Business Management is concerned that this voluntary assignment assessment policy impacts negatively on the standard of learning and assessment within the Department. It hence decided to implement, on a trial basis for 2003 and 2004, a year-mark option assignment policy for two of its undergraduate semester courses. The aim was to assess whether such an option contributed towards the improvement of examination results and the enhancement of the learning experience of students registered for the relevant courses. This paper reports on the findings of the year-mark option assignment policy for the second year degree course MNX202-J (marketing management) and the third year degree course MNF301-5 (financial management) for the trial period 2003 to 2004. The findings are in the form of (1) statistics on the percentage number of students who submitted assignments, average marks obtained and examination results statistics during the trial period: (2) the results of an opinion survey questionnaire sent to students to obtain their feedback on the value of compulsory year-mark option assignments; and (3) feedback and comments from facilitators involved in the year-mark option exercise. Finally recommendations are made on the way forward for future assessment in the Department of Business Management.

ABSTRACT Scheduling is an assignment activity related to a number of constraints, a number of events that can occur in a period of time and place or location so that the objective function as closely as possible can be fulfilled. In the hierarchy of decision making, scheduling is the last step before the start of an operation. Scheduling the assignment of KRI in Koarmatim is an interesting topic to be discussed and resolved using a mathematical method. The scheduling process of KRI assignments at Koarmatim is done to produce annual JOP / JOG. This process requires not only rapid follow-up, but also requires systematic steps. The scheduling of assignments applied by Koarmatim is currently carried out by personnel by not using mathematical calculations. The ship assignment scheduling process in this research was carried out using the Binary Integer Programming (BIP) method approach with the aim of minimizing costs and maximizing the purpose of the ship assignment. The scheduling observed was 25 ships carrying out operations for 52 weeks (1 year). The mathematical formulation of the BIP model is made up of one objective function and Three constraint functions. Then the development of the BIP model is then completed, the computer uses Excel Solver. The results obtained that the BIP model applied to scheduling KRI Koarmatim assignments is the maximum coverage area reached is 93,651,234 NM2, with an area safeguard level of 76,11 from the entire area of operating sector I to IX (1,230,442 NM2). BIP is an appropriate method to be used as a method in scheduling the assignment of KRI in Koarmatim. Keywords: Scheduling, Ship assignments, Binary Integer Programming

Le travail que nous présentons dans cette thèse porte sur le problème d'affectation dans une place de marché de prospects Internet. Plus précisément, ce travail a pour ambition de répondre à la problématique de l'adéquation de l'offre et de la demande, dans un contexte caractérisé par des flux continus faisant évoluer en temps réel l'ensemble des offres disponibles et les demandes à satisfaire. Pour ce faire, nous proposons dans un premier temps un modèle mono-période qui optimise le problème d'affectation à un instant donné et en considérant une seule période de temps, tout en permettant la prise en compte instantanée des nouvelles offres et demandes et leur adéquation en temps réel. Ce modèle permet d'optimiser deux objectifs à savoir: la maximisation du chiffre d'affaires et la satisfaction des clients.Par la suite nous proposons d'étendre ce modèle sur plusieurs périodes de temps futures afin de prendre en compte l'aspect temps réel de l'activité de la place de marché et donc le fait que des flux continus font évoluer en temps réel l'ensemble des offres et des demandes. L'objectif étant de tirer profit de la connaissance concernant cette évolution, par le biais de l'intégration d'un modèle de prévision dans un modèle d'optimisation multi-période.Ainsi, nous proposons un modèle d'optimisation multi-période permettant d'envisager à un instant donné des affectations sur plusieurs périodes de temps futures afin de réaliser les meilleures affectations possibles. Aussi, nous proposons un modèle de prévision des nouveaux flux tout en considérant les caractéristiques du modèle d'optimisation multi-période.Construire un modèle de prévision nécessite de définir les données à prévoir avant d'envisager toute méthode de prévision. En d'autres termes, nous devons choisir les paramètres du modèle de prévision, à savoir: les données historiques appropriées, le pas de temps de la prévision ainsi que l'horizon de la prévision. Le défi consiste donc à définir les paramètres du modèle de prévision qui conviendront au fonctionnement du modèle de l'optimisation multi-période.Par ailleurs, une des caractéristiques de la place de marché est la temporalité de son système. Ainsi, nous proposons un algorithme assurant l'aspect temps réel et donc le fait que les affectations s'effectuent toutes les minutes. L'algorithme que nous proposons fonctionne de manière continue à longueur de journée en optimisant à chaque instant l'adéquation offre/demande de prospects Internet tout en considérant instantanément les flux continus de prospects Internet ainsi que la mise à jour régulière de la demande Enfin, pour mettre en évidence l'efficacité et les bénéfices que la place de marché peut en tirer par l'utilisation des modèles et de l'algorithme proposés, nous avons mené des tests et différentes expérimentations sur des données réelles. Ces tests nous ont permis de valider nos travaux et d'évaluer la qualité des résultats obtenus.L'objectif de ce travail est double, d'une part, donner un cadre solide et formel pour répondre à la problématique de la place de marché de prospects Internet. D'autre part, le cadre proposé devrait être aussi générique que possible afin de résoudre tout autre problème analogue à celui de la place de marché de prospects Internet
The work that we present in this thesis focuses on the assignment problem in a marketplace of Internet prospects. More precisely, this work aims to address the problem of matching offers and demands in a context characterized by a continuous flows. These latter evolve inreal time the set of available offers and demands to satisfy. To do this, we propose initially a mono-period model which optimizes the assignment problem at a given instant and taking into account asingle period of time while allowing the instantaneous consideration of new offers and demands and their adequacy in real time. This model considers two objectives to optimize, namely: maximization of turnover as well as clients satisfaction.Thereafter, we propose to extend this model over several future time periods in order to take into account the real time aspect of the marketplace activity and so the fact that a continuous flows evolve in real time the set of offers en demands. The objective is to take advantage of knowledge about this evolution, through the integration of a forecasting model in a multi-period optimization model. Thus,we propose a multi-period optimization model for considering at agiven instant assignments over several future time periods. Also, we propose a forecasting model for new flows while considering the characteristics of the multi-period optimization model.Building a forecasting model requires defining the data before considering any forecasting method. In other words, we have to choose the parameters of the forecasting model, namely the appropriate historical data, the forecasting time step and the forecasting horizon. The challenge is to define the parameters of the forecasting model which agree with the functioning the multi-period optimization model.Furthermore, a feature of the marketplace is the temporality of its system. Thus, we propose an algorithm ensuring real-time aspect and so the fact that assignments are made every minute. The proposed algorithm works continuously all day long while optimizing every instant the offer/demand adequacy of Internet prospects and instantly considering the continuous flux of Internet prospects as well as the regular updating demand. Finally, in order to show the efficiency and the benefits that the marketplace can reap by the use of the proposed models, we conducted tests and various experiments on real data. These tests have allowed us to validate the proposed models and evaluate the quality of the results.The aim is twofold, giving a strong and formal framework to address the issue of the marketplace of Internet prospects but also proposing a generic framework to solve any problem similar to that of the marketplace of Internet prospects

In this thesis, we consider the Multi Resource Agent Bottleneck Generalized Assignment Problem. We aim to minimize the maximum load over all agents. We study the Linear Programming (LP) relaxation of the problem. We use the optimal LP relaxation solutions in our Branch and Bound algorithm while defining lower and upper bounds and branching schemes. We find that our Branch and Bound algorithm returns optimal solutions to the problems with up to 60 jobs when the number of agents is 5, and up to 30 jobs when the number of agents is 10, in less than 20 minutes. To find approximate solutions, we define a tabu search algorithm and an &

approximation algorithm. Our computational results have revealed that these procedures can find high quality solutions to large sized instances very quickly.

I Sverige begränsas allmänna och publika bolags totala uppdragstid för en revisor genom ett flertal lagbestämmelser samt kontinuerliga revisors- och byrårotationer. Mindre aktiebolag i Sverige hamnar dock ofta utanför dessa bestämmelser, vilket resulterar i att den enskilde revisorn i hög grad behöver utgå ifrån principbaserade bestämmelser vid svåra avvägningar. De principbaserade bestämmelserna har varit föremål för förändring under de senaste åren, eftersom uppdragstiderna oftast är betydligt längre i mindre bolag gentemot stora bolag. Detta skapar ett spelrum som ställer högre krav på att revisorn agerar utefter en moralnivå som passar yrket för att uppfylla den integritet och objektivitet som yrket kräver, samt för att undvika att oberoendeställningen påverkas eller kritiseras av samhället. Syftet med uppsatsen var att kvalitativt utreda hur olika revisorer uppfattar problematiken kring deras oberoendeställning, som är förknippat med uppdragstiden. Genom att identifiera revisorers individuella uppfattningar kring integritet, objektivitet och deras oberoendeställning har det även kunnat att därefter att analysera vad för påverkningar deras etiska perspektiv samt moraliska nivå har, således förklarar denna uppsats hur deras oberoendeställning kan påverkas av en bestämd uppdragstid i mindre bolag. Resultatet visar att det finns vissa skillnader i hur revisorer ser på problematiken gällande oberoende förknippad till uppdragstiden, eftersom de revisorer som ingick i studien resonerade utifrån olika etiska perspektiv samt olika nivåer av moral men i slutändan hade de liknande uppfattningar kring detta område.
In Sweden, general and public companies' total assignment time for an auditor is limited through a several of legal provisions and continuous auditors and agency rotations. However, smaller limited companies in Sweden often end up outside these regulations, which results in the individual auditor needs to be largely based on principle-based regulations for difficult trade-offs. The principle-based regulations have been the subject of change in recent years, as assignment times are usually considerably longer in smaller companies towards large companies. This creates a space for maneuver that places higher demands that the auditor acts along a moral level that fits the profession to fulfill the integrity and objectivity to which the profession requires, as well as to avoid the fact that the independence is affected or criticized by society. The purpose of the study was to qualitatively investigate how different auditors perceive the problem of independence, which is associated with the mission time. Resultatet visar att det finns vissa skillnader i hur revisorer ser på problematiken gällande oberoende förknippad till uppdragstiden, eftersom de som ingick i studien resonerade utifrån olika etiska perspektiv samt olika nivåer av moral. Men i slutändan hade de liknande uppfattningar kring detta område. By identifying auditors' individual perceptions of integrity, objectivity and their independence has done it possible to analyses what kind of affections their ethical perspective and level of moral has, by other words does this study explains how auditors' independence can getting affected by designed assignment time in smaller companies. The result shows that there are some differences in how auditors look at the problems regarding independence associated to designed assignment time for smaller companies, since the auditors' that were included in this study reasoned based on different ethical perspective and levels of morality. But in the end did they have similar perceptions regarding this area.

The Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) fishery is of great economic importance to the Faroese economy. There are two separately managed cod stocks around the Faroe Islands, the Faroe Plateau and the Faroe Bank cod. Both have experienced dramatic decreases in size and informed management decisions are vital for both stock viability and exploitation. The stocks are geographically isolated by an 800 m deep channel and water temperatures are on average 1 – 2 ºC higher on the Faroe Bank than on the Faroe Plateau. There are clear phenotypic differences between the stocks; in particular, the markedly higher growth rate for the Faroe Bank cod has caught public and scientific attention. There is continuing debate regarding the relative importance of genetics and environmental contributions to the contrasting phenotypes. Analyses of reproductive parameters (field data and experimental captive spawnings) as well as analyses of microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were undertaken to better resolve the issue. Field data as well as data from experimental captive spawnings provided evidence of reproductive differences between Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod. Peak spawning occurred earlier on the Faroe Plateau than on the Faroe Bank and this difference in timing of spawning was maintained in captivity. In particular, differences in sizes of eggs (average diameters of 1.40 and 1.30 mm for Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod eggs, respectively) and indirect evidence of greater volumes spawned by the Faroe Bank females suggested stock differences with respect to egg size – egg number trade-off. It was hypothesised that the strategy adopted by cod on the Faroe Bank, with a higher number of smaller eggs, evolved in response to a more hostile environment (bare seabed and higher exposure to predators) experienced by early life stages in this area. Experimental captive spawnings with Faroe Bank cod showed a large interfamily skew in survival rates of cod eggs and fry. Egg size was identified as a useful indicator of survival rates in the egg stage, but egg survival rates could not be used to predict viability in later developmental stages, thus highlighting the importance of employing some sort of genetic monitoring of cod fry to ensure sufficient family representation in the progeny. While no tank effect was evident concerning fry survival, a significant tank effect was identified concerning body sizes of fry. Microsatellite data were analysed using large sample sizes of Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod with the Faroe Plateau divided into two locations, Faroe Plateau North-East and Faroe Plateau West (cod from each of the two were known to belong to separate spawning grounds). Two Norwegian coastal cod samples were included as outlier populations. While no genetic differentiation was detected between the two Faroe Plateau locations, these analyses revealed a detectable, albeit relatively modest, degree of genetic differentiation between cod from the Faroe Plateau and the Faroe Bank (FST = 0.0014 and 0.0018; DJost_EST = 0.0027 and 0.0048; P < 0.0001 and P < 0.001 for the Faroe Plateau North-East – Faroe Bank and the Faroe Plateau West – Faroe Bank comparisons). These values were several times smaller than those between Faroese and Norwegian coastal cod (pairwise FST and DJost_EST values in the range of 0.0061 – 0.0137 and 0.0158 – 0.0386, respectively). Despite recent reductions in census population sizes for Faroe Plateau and, particularly, Faroe Bank cod, genetic diversity estimates were comparable to the ones observed for Norwegian coastal cod and there was no evidence of significant genetic bottlenecks. Lastly, data for one of the markers (Gmo132) indicated genotype-dependent vertical distribution of cod (as investigated for Faroe Plateau North-East cod). Contrary to some previously published studies, analysis of SNPs of two candidate genes for adaptive divergence, the hemoglobin gene Hb-ß1 and the transferrin gene Tf1, failed to detect differentiation between samples of Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod analysed in this thesis. Of 3533 novel SNPs simultaneously discovered and genotyped by restriction-site associated DNA (RAD) sequencing, 58 showed evidence of genetic differentiation between Faroe Plateau North-East and Faroe Bank cod (P < 0.05). No single locus was fixed for different alleles between Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod. A set of eight informative SNPs (FST values between Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank samples > 0.25; P < 0.0005) were selected for validation in larger samples, that included cod from both Faroe Plateau areas and the Faroe Bank as well as Norwegian coastal and White Sea cod. Six out of the eight loci amplified successfully with a PCR-based method and there was 100 % concordance between genotypes of individuals screened by both techniques. Due to ascertainment bias, the SNPs should only be applied with caution in a broader geographical context. Nonetheless, these SNPs did confirm the genetic substructure suggested for Faroese cod by microsatellite analyses. While no genetic differentiation was evident between the two Faroe Plateau locations, significant genetic differentiation was evident between Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod at five of the SNPs (FST values in the range of 0.0383 – 0.1914). This panel of five SNPs could confidently be used to trace groups of Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod to their population of origin. In conclusion, multiple lines of evidence demonstrate that Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod are truly two genetically distinct populations. While the findings contribute to a broader understanding of the biology and the genetics of Faroe Plateau and Faroe Bank cod, the novel SNPs developed may provide a valuable resource for potential future demands of i.e. genetic stock identification methods.

The asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network will provide a wide range of multimedia services with diversified traffic flow; such as text, image, voice and video etc. As the QOS requirements of these traffic type are all different, it is an important subject how to quarantee the QOS and promote the link utilization, where the QOS is mainly measured in maximum delay time and maximum cell lose rate. The thesis develops a chapter to survey the principle of flow control and to understand the processing scheme of flow control in ATM network. Besides, a QOS control method named priority assignment control scheme is presented, and it is used to quarantee the QOS and to improve the link utilization. Under a required condition of maximum delay time for various traffic type, the effect of different priority assignment period on the cell lose probability is the major studing scope in the thesus and finally a method for priority scheduling in each cell slot named golden ratio scheduling scheme is developed.

In contemporary business era, organizations’ information service departments (IT departments) often deal with tremendous and continuous requests of ad-hoc information systems and maintenance. With limited human resources how to effectively select projects and assign human resources to selected projects has become a critical issue to IT departments. Unlike one-time, single project planning, IT departments also need to re-plan project assignments for not only the new projects of current period and the accumulated effects of existing projects from previous periods. In this regard, this research proposes a decision support model, named MPP model, to help IT departments handle multi-projects selection with multi-periods re-planning. The MPP contains a decision process that applies and implements the DAR from CMMI for guiding the entire project selection and assignment. MPP also includes a binary-integer OR programming optimization algorithm for stakeholders to effectively handling multi-periods re-planning issue. To demonstrate the proposed work, this research reports a business case as a real use of MPP in the IT department of Nanya Technology Corporation, Taiwan. Several use cases and analyses are provided in this study. Validity examinations for the real company case and the limitations due to the current development of MPP are discussed as well.

This article discuss an issue that how to make a good decision of allocation of optimal time period. According to the mean data arrival rate and the number of nodes which limited in the finite buffer, the produced and consumed packets of all nodes are considered. However, the slots could be reused by the nodes without three hops from the transmitter. By these consideration, the suitable time period for nodes within three hops can be calculated. Finally, the analysis and the simulation could show that the time period suits the nodes within three hops and reach the better performance.

In this paper we investigate the pole assignment problem for discrete-time descriptor systems with period 3 by derivative and proportional state feedback. The results in this paper are quote from [3], [8] and [16], respectively. In section 1 we review the definitions and results of the descriptor system with period 1. In section 2 we introduce the definitions of the descriptor systems with period 3. In section 3 we introduce some notations and examine how the response of the periodic descriptor systems depend on the eigenstructure of the associated periodic matrix pairs {(E_j,A_j)}_{j=1}^{3}, that is (2.3). Definitions of complete and strong reachability are given and the significance of these conditions are discussed. In section 4 we present an algorithm to reduce the periodic matrix triples {E_j,A_j,B_j}_{j=1}^{3} into canonical forms by using orthogonal and elementary matrix transformations. In section 5 we shown that a periodic descriptor systems that is strongly reachable can be transformed into a regular systems and of index at most 1 by derivative and proportional state feedback. In section 6 applications to the pole assignment problem are discussed, this is our main result of this paper. The extend to which the poles can be assigned by derivative and proportional state feedback whilst retaining regularity is examined under the different reachability conditions.

Chapter 8 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) deals with set-off. Set-off, also known as compensation, is generally defined as a mechanism by which two (or more) reciprocal obligations of an obligor (debtor) and an obligee (creditor) can be extinguished up to the level of the smaller amount if the requirements fixed by the applicable law are met. It is therefore an effective and simplified way of discharging a party's obligation, avoiding overlapping payments (‘circuity of payment’) or performances. Chapter 8 addresses the issue of set-off in five provisions: conditions of set-off, foreign currency set-off, set-off by notice, content of notice, and effect of set-off. It considers set-off in the case of assignment of rights, transfer of obligations, assignment of a contract, and when the obligation is affected by the limitation period.

Under Art 9.3.1, ‘assignment of a contract’ means the transfer by agreement from one person (the ‘assignor’) to another person (the ‘assignee’) of the assignor's rights and obligations arising out of a contract with another person (the ‘other party’). This commentary discusses legal transfers and the ‘no form required’ rule with respect to transfer by agreement between assignor and assignee, as well as the obligee's consent as a requirement for the transferred obligations. It also considers the notion of transfer, object of the transfer, and the issue of time in the transfer.

Under Art 9.1.12, if the notice of assignment of a right is given by the assignee, the obligor may request the assignee to provide within a reasonable time adequate proof that the assignment has been made. Until adequate proof is provided, the obligor may withhold payment. Unless adequate proof is provided, notice is not effective. Art 9.1.12 essentially protects the obligor against the risk of receiving fraudulent notice from a person who purports to be the assignee. This commentary discusses the rationale and scope of Art 9.1.12, the obligor's right to request adequate proof of the assignment, and the timing and effects of adequate proof that is given by the assignee.

This chapter examines the doctrines of champerty and maintenance—the most prominent examples of a public policy limitation on the ability to assign. The doctrines of champerty and maintenance trace their origins back to the earliest days of the common law, and indeed were the basis for the common law's traditional antipathy to all assignments. Champerty is traditionally described as a species of maintenance or ‘an aggravated form of maintenance’ that is said to occur ‘when the person maintaining another stipulates for a share of the proceeds or the action or dispute or other contentious proceedings where property is in dispute’. The chapter then explains the effect of champerty and maintenance on an assignment or other contract.

An account of Wyndham Lewis’s career as a portrait painter opens this chapter, with a focus on the many self-portraits he painted during his life. The theme of the difference between visual and literary self-portraiture is explored, and the role of satire in portraiture. The chapter examines Lewis’s first autobiography Blasting and Bombardiering (1937), and his depiction of the period leading up to and through the First World War. It also analyzes Lewis’s self-imposed exile during the Second World War during his emigration to America and Canada with his wife Anne, portrayed in Self Condemned (1954), and the subsequent writing of Rude Assignment (1950) after Lewis’s return to England. Lewis’s word portraits of Ford and Stein in his autobiographies are discussed, as are the omissions in these autobiographies.

Jennifer L. Sullivan (academic librarian) and Jessica Lott (anthropology professor) are invested in pedagogical approaches that help learners apply course content to their everyday lives. With this goal in mind, we created a flexible Wikipedia-based assignment for an upper-level anthropology course, Gender, Sex, and Sexuality: A Global Perspective, as a way to teach information literacy skills in a real-world setting while also enriching course content. As the course’s culminating assignment, learners researched an information gap on Wikipedia addressing gender. Learners were also asked to use their experience on Wikipedia to reflect on the significance of the documented gender bias in Wikipedia. This chapter discusses the advantages of Wikipedia as a platform for cultivating authentic information literacy practices. In particular, we address ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, information literacy as a social justice imperative, and disciplinary information literacy. We taught this assignment four times over the period summer 2017–summer 2020 and draw from our experiences collaborating on this assignment. We hope that learning from our successes and failures will inspire those who wish to adapt it for their instruction.

Canonical human capital theories posit that education, by enhancing worker skills, reduces the likelihood that a worker will be laid off during times of economic change. Yet, this has not been demonstrated causally. We link administrative education records from 1987 through 2002 to nationally representative surveys conducted before and after the onset of COVID-19 in Barbados to explore the causal impact of improved education on job loss during this period. Using a regression discontinuity (RD) design, Beuermann and Jackson (2020) show that females (but not males) who score just above the admission threshold for more selective schools in Barbados attain more years of education than those that scored just below (essentially holding initial ability fixed). Here, in follow-up data, we show that these same females (but not males) are much less likely to have lost a job after the onset of COVID-19. We show that these effects are not driven by sectoral changes, or changes in labor supply. Because employers observe incumbent worker productivity, these patterns are inconsistent with pure education signaling, and they suggest that education enhances worker skill.
