In this essay, I explore the significance of involving personal experiences with loss in my research on parental bereavement. By intersecting autoethnography and findings from a qualitative interview study with bereaved parents following infant loss, I argue that while popular and professional accounts depict normal grief as a transitory state, parental accounts present grief as a continuing and open-ended relationship with the dead child. In acknowledgment of this, I present fragmentary, non-reifying narratives of the continuing realities of becoming a bereaved parent.

Perceiving oneself as parent is a key challenge during the transition to parenthood. The importance of health professionals in determining perceived efficacy in parents upon the birth of their child is few explored. The objective of this study is to analayze the relations between the first time parents' perceived efficacy and their perceptions of nurses' help-giving and critical events during post-partum period. SAMPLE AND METHOD: One hundred sixty couples participated in a correlational study by completing questionaires after the birth of their first child. RESULTS: A model of parents' postpartum experience was established where nurses' collaboration and help-giving practices contribute directly and indirectly to the parents' perception of control and perceptions of events. They contribute indirectly to parent's perceived self-efficacy. IMPLICATIONS: The help given by health professionals, especially nurses, to parents following the birth of a child makes a major positive difference in the parents' experiences.

In this article, I describe the investigative efforts of a group of preservice teachers to acquire an understanding of how and why parents and children work together in mathematics the way they do. First, I share literature that supports the need for inquiry into parent-child collaborations in mathematics. I then detail the study: the participants, learning environment, modes of inquiry, findings, and their implications for teacher practice. Findings concern the understandings the preservice teachers acquired about parent-child collaborations and their enhanced practices for supporting classroom families. This work is intended to contribute to the body of knowledge on preparing teachers to inquire about and cultivate parent-child collaborations in mathematics.

The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the understanding of Thai teenage parents’ experiences of becoming a parent as well as to examine healthcare providers’ reflections on their experiences of caring for teenage parents. The findings are based on three studies using mixed methods and resulting in four papers. The empirical data were collected in western Thailand between 2013 and 2015, in a province with a high incidence of teenage pregnancy. Paper I: Empirical data were based on three self-reported validated questionnaires. The sample consisted of 70 teenage and 70 adult fathers. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Chi-square test were used for the analysis. Papers II and III: A heterogeneous group of 25 teenage couples (n=50) were interviewed before and after the birth of their first child, using grounded theory methodology. Paper IV: Four focus-group discussions were conducted with 21 healthcare providers; latent content analysis was used for analysis. Teenage fathers scored lower than adult fathers on scales measuring the father’s sense of competence, the father’s childrearing behavior, and the father-child relationship (paper I). The teenage mothers reported how they struggled with physical and social changes, for example bodily changes, breastfeeding and having to leave school, while the teenage fathers gave examples of coping with their future responsibility by working hard to save money for future family needs (paper III). The teenagers’ own parents were an important source of support all the way from pregnancy to childrearing, and their provision of childcare, advice, and instructions helped the teenage parents to cope with their duties. Most of the teenage parents reproduced traditional gender roles by being a caring mother or a breadwinning father (papers II–III). The healthcare providers were concerned about the young parents, viewed themselves as providing comprehensive care, and suggested access to reproductive health care and improved sex education as ways to improve quality (paper IV). The young couples’ stories describe how they struggled and coped with life changes when becoming unintentionally pregnant, accepting their parenthood, and finally becoming parents. A supportive family played a vital role in the transition to parenthood. Health promotion efforts for this particular group should be undertaken continuously to improve the quality of care for teenage parents and to promote the infants’ well-being and future development. Keywords: childrearing, fatherhood, focus-group discussions, grounded theory, healthcare providers, teenage fathers, teenage parents, Thai teenagers

The thesis aims to contribute to a natural history of family life and the study of family practices by investigating the everyday hazards encountered in routine parenting and the resources on which parents draw in helping them manage these. It seeks to understand how first-time parents manage the transition, the difficulties they encounter, including tensions in their own relationship, and the sources of enjoyment as they negotiate their new identities. This longitudinal, qualitative study followed seven heterosexual couples over the first year of their becoming parents and data was generated through the use of in-depth interviews at four points over a year. Other techniques, such as audio and photo diaries, were employed to further elicit different types of data. I explore couples’ accounts of the pressures on parenting and their understanding of what is involved in trying to meet contemporary parenting ideals. The messy business of parenting brings with it discursive and practical dilemmas – breastfeeding advice when a mother is in pain, advice on sleep routines when parents are on their knees with exhaustion. Experts (both professional and popular) can provide support, as can family and friends. But this also has the potential to undermine parents’ own expertise. My research examines the practices they use in responding to the needs of a baby and notions of the ‘right way to parent’ and asks how advice and support contribute to the development of their self confidence and identities. There are also pressures arising from contemporary discourses of the ‘good’ mother and ‘involved’ father. But rather than examining mothers and fathers in isolation, the research asks how partners together manage ideals of shared parenting

The purpose of this study is to examine what effect social background may have on the timing of becoming a parent in Sweden. By applying event-history techniques to data from the Swedish level of living survey (LNU) we try to separate the direct from the indirect effect of social background on timing of first childbearing. Few previous studies have focused on characteristics of social background and analysis of intergenerational effects on the age of becoming a parent. In this study, we show that the risk of becoming a parent is different for those who are mobile than for the socially non-mobile. The effect of social background on the propensity of becoming a parent is not just indirect via persons own educational careers. When we control for own educational level much of the impact of social background on the propensity of becoming a parent remains. We clearly show the existence of a significant direct effect of social background on the propensity to become a parent.

The number of babies that require care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit continues to rise in the UK and parents who have a baby who is born sick or prematurely find themselves adapting to this stressful and often unexpected event whilst also trying to establish their role as a new parent. With no current large British studies, this study explores the experiences of both mothers and fathers in the NICU in relation to adaptation and parental role development and how their experience changes over time. In total 76 parents were interviewed using semi structured interviews 7-10 days following the birth to capture their early experiences of the NICU and then again beyond 28 days to explore any changes in their views and feelings over time. Interviews were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim into the written word and imported into WINMAX PRO. Data analysis revealed nine major sections. These are preparation prior to birth, labour and delivery, first sight of infant, support from the partner, family, friends and other parents, support from and communication with staff, adaptation to the NICU experience, development of the parental role, changes with time and the experiences of fathers. Findings show differences in what mothers and fathers find stressful about their NICU experience, how they adapt to the birth of a sick or premature infant and in their development of the parental role. With the passage of time the events surrounding the birth became less significant as parents start to look to the future. Their role as a parent continued to develop with feelings that their baby needed and recognised them, but many parents felt that they were unable to influence what happened to their baby in the NICU. Recommendations are made for further research and for changes to NICU practice.

The purpose of this study was to shed more light on the process of desistance from crime in the context of disengagement from youth gangs and to do so in relation to a key life-event: parenthood. Gang membership was theorised in the light of a life-course framework and gang disengagement was defined as a renunciation of a gang status and gradually decreasing gang embeddedness. The likelihood of parenthood serving as a trigger of change in gang membership was investigated. The study utilised data from narrative interviews with 15 inner-London parents who all self-reported as former gang members. Interview transcripts were further analysed by means of a hybrid process of inductive and deductive thematic analysis. This examined (1) subjective experiences of parenthood, (2) the effect of parenthood on renegotiation of the gang member identity and (3) whether there were any substantial differences between how fathers and mothers embraced their parenthood experience. With regard to the course of behavioural and identity changes, there was no one, single pattern that would have reflected all parents’ journeys out of gangs. There were considerable intra- and inter-gender differences with regard to when the transformation process started, how deep the changes were with respect to core-self and to what extent parents were engaging in reflective, meaning-making processes. Parents also demonstrated different levels of resilience in the face of challenges and varied in how much commitment, and pro-activity they were channeling into the future-oriented endeavours. The experience of being a gang member gradually became an aversive one for most parents and they generally appraised the meaning of conventional life. The volatility of new parenthood as a possible turning point in the life of a young gang member denotes it as a timely occasion when assistance could be provided. Based on parents’ accounts, several recommendations were proposed that, if implemented on a wider scale, are likely to increase the chance of parents enacting their parental roles successfully. These included: a single case management approach that is long-term, affords flexibility if circumstances change and, due to the multifaceted character of young people’s needs, demands effective partnership between different agencies. Though parenthood was not a universal remedy, becoming a parent served as an important catalyst for self-transformation and gang disengagement for the majority of the interviewed young parents. The overall success appeared to be strongly intertwined with one’s level of agency, support from pro-social others and perception of availability of a legitimate identity.

Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health Waves I and III are used to estimate the effect of parental attachment on independence in emerging adults ages 18 to 27. The nature of independence focused on living in a place of their own and not receiving financial support from parents, which described about half of the sample. The study finds that emerging adults who, in their youth, expressed high attachments to their parents, were slightly less likely to become independent as emerging adults. Rather, age and gender are greater positive predictors of independence.

Background: Almost every 20th child is borne premature in Sweden, before the parents are ready to care for a new family member. The parents need to cope with the stress and anxiety of having their newborn child in the neonatal ward and influenced by nursing care of neonatal staff grow their parental role.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to illustrate experiences of parenthood within the care of premature at the neonatal ward.

Method: A review where 18 articles between 2000 and 2005 were chosen and examined. The articles were analysed according to VIPS, which facilitates the practical use of the result.

Result: The study reveals that parenthood is experienced as a time dependent process with three phases, primary, secondary and tertiary, where the parent’s needs and experiences changed character. The parents experienced that they developed from passive to active in the care of the premature child when the neonatal staff guided their participation, gave information/education and support. Interventions concerned the environment and coordination was experienced as enhancing parenthood because it made it possible for the parents to be close to their premature child.

Conclusion: There’s still interventions that needs to be done at the neonatal ward to enhance parents experience of their parenthood.

Becoming a new parent can cause both immense joy and immense stress that leads to increases and decreases in a new parent’s feeling of life satisfaction. In addition, working as a mental health clinician is a frequently challenging career. Given that many clinicians also become parents while working during the course of their careers, it is surprising that there is not more research on the experience of clinicians who become new parents. More research is needed to find out how people balance the stresses of new parenthood and their emotionally challenging jobs. There is some research on “stress-related growth” that suggests that people can experience stressful or traumatic events and emerge on the other side feeling like they have achieved positive personal growth. This study attempted to find out if this occurs when clinicians become parents. This was a narrative study aimed to add to the research literature on parent clinician’s (clinicians who were also parents) lives by presenting their stories of becoming new parents. Five parent clinicians were interviewed on two separate occasions and those interviews were transcribed; the transcriptions were edited into five individual stories that detail the parent clinician’s unique challenges, how they navigated their challenges, and how they reflected on their experiences and their personal growth. The five parent clinicians recounted many positive and negative experiences that new parenthood had on both their clinical work and personal lives. In addition, they described how their families and identities helped them to make meaning out of the challenges they faced. The parent clinicians all talked about how either the presence or absence of social support, or their personal and professional relationships, impacted their lives when they became new parents. Social support included institutional support such as their employers or graduate departments and personal support such as their co-parents, families, and friends. This support either helped or hindered the parent clinician’s ability to balance the demands of parenthood and work. Furthermore, the findings supported previous research on stress-related growth that suggest that cognitive processing (thinking about an event after it occurred) and social support predict the perception of positive personal growth. This was the first known narrative study on the impacts of new parenthood on mental health clinicians and the study adds to the research literature on clinician’s lived experiences. In addition, the findings from the study can help training directors, clinical supervisors, and agency directors to develop new policies that increase new parents’ social support which may help them weather the storms of becoming a new parent while working as a clinician.

Abstract As a result of the wide availability of social media, cheap flights and free intra-EU movement it has become considerably easier to maintain links with the country of origin than it was only a generation ago. Therefore, the language and identity formation among children of recent migrants might be significantly different from the experiences of children of the previous generations. The aim of this paper is to examine the perceptions of parents on the formation of national and transnational identity among the ‘1.5 generation migrant children’ – the children born in Latvia but growing up in England and the factors affecting them. In particular, this article seeks to understand whether 1.5 generation migrant children from Latvia construct strong transnational identities by maintaining equally strong ties with their country of origin and mother tongue and, at the same time, intensively creating networks, learning and using the language of the new home country. The results of 16 semi-structured in-depth interviews with the parents of these children reveal that the 1.5 generation Latvian migrants are on a path of becoming English-dominant bilinguals. So far there is little evidence of the development of a strong transnational identity among 1.5 generation migrant children from Latvia. Instead, this study observed a tendency towards an active integration and assimilation into the new host country facilitated by their parents or occurring despite their parents’ efforts to maintain ties with Latvia. These findings suggest that rather than the national identity of the country of origin being supplemented with a new additional national identity – that of the country of settlement – the identity of the country of origin becomes dominated by it instead.

AbstractThis chapter is devoted to the issue of paid work. Despite analyses dominating today that perceive paid work as an obstacle to parenting, I argue that paid work is an important obligation arising from parenthood. My analysis indicates that becoming a parent has consequences on how individuals perceive paid work. It becomes more important and there is a bigger focus on the level of earnings. Polish parents feel an enormous economic pressures in connection to having children. Yet the attitudes of men and women to paid work are different. In case of men there is a greater pressure to keep paid work and have a decent salary. Whereas women more often perceive paid work as a source of satisfaction. On the one hand, they also feel pressure to be active in the labour market and to bring money home, but on the other hand they confine more attention to the fact that paid work should be satisfactory. What is more, the chapter discusses these gender differences in the context of economic inequalities, as well as differences between the situation of single and coupled parents.

Abstract As operators shift their focus toward operating within cashflow, understanding the true potential of these unconventional resources is becoming increasingly important. Simultaneously, accurate modeling of EURs in shale wells is becoming increasingly complicated. There are multiple factors at play for this increase in complexity, key amongst them, are well interactions. Well interactions or interference have increased with the concentration of field development in core areas of various basins and have completely changed with production behavior in shale wells. The present paper handles this multi-variable problem by incorporating well design, completion and petrophysical variables in a prediction model. Furthermore, the analysis is presented from a viewpoint of parent, child, parent/child and co-completed wells to accurately understand the variability in the driving factors. Terminal decline rate in shale wells is the decline rate wells settle at once the pressure transient reaches the boundary of the well. At this point, the well transitions to a boundary dominated flow regime and continues to drain from a fixed area. Estimating the rate of terminal decline is critical in accurate EUR modeling because changes in transition point can have a significant impact on production behavior of the well and in-turn EUR. The present paper attempts to predict the transition point using an ACE Non-Linear Regression model which is trained on a large multi-variate dataset. Variables incorporated in this analysis include terminal decline month, gas-oil-ratio based of the first three months of production, horizontal length, oil EUR, proppant per foot, average distance from the base of the producing zone, nearest neighbor mean spacing, and hydrocarbon in-place. In order to determine spacing status and nearest wellbore distances, a segment-wise analytical distance approach was taken. These distances and spacing status flags were incorporated into a multi-variate model in-order to model terminal decline rates. The transformations observed from the model showed high dependence on terminal decline month and oil EUR. However, this was less pronounced in parent/child and child wells. In parent/child and child wells completion metrics and HCIP more significantly influenced production behavior. Specifically, child wells saw a higher dependence on first three-month GOR and lateral length compared to parent/child wells which had a higher dependence on proppant per foot and average distance from the base of the producing formation. Additionally, spacing showed a moderate impact on transition point and associated terminal decline rates, but overall increased spacing caused a delayed transition point and consequently a lower terminal decline rate. Understanding how cause-and-effect relationships between parent and child wells differ offers a unique perspective into production behavior and consequently provides better insights into infill wells placement and production prediction. The present paper offers a unique perspective in looking at a key decline variable, transition point, for shale reservoirs. By using multivariate analysis, it incorporates the incremental complexity of the modeling effort and attempts to provide best practices in understanding the impact on production behavior. Furthermore, by incorporating a segment-wise analytical distance approach to determine spacing, the paper adds to the existing body of literature by providing a new perspective for a well interaction standpoint and defines the cause and effect relationships within.

Abstract Ducted propeller designs are becoming more popular because of their high efficiency, resistance to cavitation and low radiated noise. In this paper, unsteady RANS simulations are carried out for the design of rear stators for ducted propeller to improve its hydrodynamic performance. The design of rear stator is carried out based on the wake field behind propellers. The two-dimensional airfoil modified from NACA4603 is studied to obtain the angle of attack that makes thrust on stators maximum. The analyses are performed at different angles of attack, using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver STAR-CCM+ to solve URANS equations. URANS equations are discretized by finite volume method and solved by PISO algorithm. Simulations have been made using unstructured grid with mesh moving technique. The simulation results indicate that the total thrust coefficient and efficiency of modified ducted propeller have been improved by 7.32% and 5.72% respectively compared with the parent one. The simulation results show that the design method is reasonable and feasible.

The United States generates more than 250 million tons of municipal solid waste (trash/garbage), with only 34% being recycled. In the broader global environment, the problem of waste management is becoming increasingly relevant, demanding innovative solutions. Traditional End-of-Life (EOL) approaches to managing waste include recycle, reuse, remanufacture and disposal. Recently, resynthesis was proposed as an alternative to traditional EOL options that combines multiple products to create a new product distinct from its parent assemblies. Resynthesis employs data mining and natural language processing algorithms to quantify assembly/subassembly combinations suitable for new product combinations. However, existing resynthesis methodologies proposed in the design community have been limited to exploring subassembly combinations, failing to explore potential combinations on a materials level. The authors of this paper propose a material resynthesis methodology that combines the materials of multiple EOL products using conventional manufacturing processes that generate candidate resynthesized materials that satisfy the needs of existing domains/applications. Appropriate applications for a resynthesized material are discovered by comparing the properties of the new material to the functional requirements of application classes which are found using clustering and latent semantic analysis. In the course of this paper, the authors present a case study that demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed material resynthesis methodology in the construction materials domain.

The integrity of subsea pipe girth welds is routinely ensured through Engineering Criticality Assessments (ECAs) based on fracture mechanics principles. In order to capture the whole design life, the ECA must cover loadings that the pipeline is subjected to during both installation and operation. Stress based semi-analytical methods using Failure Assessment Diagrams (FAD) have been used extensively for ‘run of the mill’ assessments as far as C-Mn steel pipe with overmatching weld is concerned. These stress based methods are captured in depth in industry codes such as BS7910 and DNV-OS-F101. In recent years however, with industry seeking to transport more corrosive fluids, the use of pipe containing a corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) layer is becoming increasingly popular. Together with the CRA layer, anti-corrosion weld consumables material would be used at the pipe joints to protect the whole pipeline from corrosion. Some of these weld consumables, especially at high temperature, partially overmatch or even undermatch the parent pipe material, resulting in difficulties in application of conventional FAD approach. Industry has turned to numerical methods to fill in gaps which are not covered by the FAD based approach. However no codified approach/standard exists for executing numerically based ECAs. This paper attempts to outline the FAD and numerical approaches being used by industry. The different approaches will be assessed for their range of application, limitations of execution and comparison of results obtained. The study is carried out for the case of a typical external surface flaw in a 12″ pipe.

Brittle fractures in parent material carbon steel pipe, fittings, and flanges are surfacing in recent ASME B31.3 refinery and gas plant construction and facility start-ups with unexpected low toughness of 3J (2.2 ft-lb) to 7J (5.2 ft-lb) at −10°C (14°F) to −29°C (−20°F). The issue is becoming wide-spread globally, affecting up to 30 percent of materials tested, although many manufacturers are not experiencing this issue. The issue creates a new brittle fracture risk that needs to be addressed as the uncertainty of not knowing suitability for service at temperatures down to −29°C (−20°F) is concerning for reliability and safety. These components are considered by ASME VIII Div I and ASME B31.3 Code as being inherently ductile, and brittle fracture resistant without any Charpy impact testing requirements. Testing showed brittle transgranular cleavage cracks. The components were deemed to be unsuitable and not safe for use at low temperatures even though they complied with the applicable ASME Codes [1, 2] and ASTM material standards. Low toughness can result in brittle fracture of the material during hydrostatic tests, cold start-ups, or upset conditions that result in low temperature operations. Additionally, some ASTM A350 LF2 CL1 [3] forged flanges certified to −46°C (−50°F) exhibited the same 3J (2.2 ft-lb) to 7J (5.2 ft-lb) at −46°C (−50°F). This paper discusses historical literature, metallurgical investigations, findings, and factors that contribute to susceptibility to brittle fracture including chemistry, grain size, heat treatment and forming techniques and also issues of ductile to brittle temperature transition shift, and fracture mechanical assumptions. This paper provides guidance to ensure the components are suitable for service and proposes options in addition to the current minimum Codes requirements to mitigate risks of in-service brittle fracture.

ABSTRACT Background: Young mothers go through the transitional stages of becoming parent and adult simultaneously. This poses a breastfeeding challenge that older mother does not encounter. The coverage of breastfeeding in young mothers was lower and the average duration of breastfeeding was shorter than that of adult mothers. The study aimed to review experience of breastfeeding in young mothers. Subjects and Method: A scoping review framework were adapted from Arksey and O’Malley method. It consists of five stages: 1) Identify research questions, 2) Identify relevant articles, 3) Select studies, 4) Comply data, 5) Summarize and report results. The inclusion criteria were original research, published from 2009-2019, and in English language. The exclusion criteria were randomized controlled trial study, reviewed articles, and reports or books. The quality of the article was assessed using Hawker’s Quality Assessment Tool and reported by PRISMA flowchart. Results: Eleven articles were selected from 562. The experience of breastfeeding in young mothers has been described in three mains thematic: (1) Mother decision to breastfeed were more self-centered, (2) The success of breastfeeding was supported by many factors, including feeling comfortable while breastfeeding, family and peer support, knowledge of breastfeeding benefits, and support from health workers, and (3) Obstacles during breastfeeding such as mothers feeling confined, community responses, worries about food consumption, have many roles, the assumption that babies are more satisfied with formula milk, physical discomfort, and inadequate response from health workers. Conclusion: Experience of breastfeeding in young mothers is influenced by three aspects: 1) Decision making to breastfeed, 2) Factors that support the implementation of breastfeeding, and 3) Constraints during breastfeeding. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the status of the core curriculum in higher education doctoral programs from the perspective of program directors. We used online survey analytic techniques to query program directors about their EdD and PhD programs in higher education, credit hours, and curricular content. Our study confirms previous work finding that there is common agreement in the subject matter areas of organization, leadership, administration, and history. What our work adds is that there is a growing consensus among higher education doctoral programs about the position of higher education law and finance in the curricular core. In addition, we find there is a growing interest in public policy and community colleges over time, with a majority of EdD programs including instruction in these areas. Nevertheless, majoritarian agreement does not meet at a level wherein consensus can be inferred, especially within PhD programs where requirements are more varied across programs. In addition, while there is an increasing trend in the inclusion of multiculturalism in higher education doctoral programming, multiculturalism is not currently part of higher education’s core. We conclude with research and practice implications for doctoral programs in higher education as a field of study.

This paper is about transformations from knowing to not-knowing and from doing to becoming. The paper’s focus is an ongoing research project on a new Doctorate program in Modern Languages studies (DML) and the process that the students in this program undergo when transitioning from being practitioners to becoming novice scholars. This program is part of a conscious effort to create an academic field whereby scholarly and professional types of knowledge are organically co-produced and this interlaced knowledge is expected to fertilize practitioners’ professional practices. The program’s graduate students are mostly in their mid-career and are motivated to pursue their DML studies for multiple reasons. The necessity of developing a study plan that can foster their transition from practitioners to scholars and help them develop a researcher identity became evident early on. Students were expected to quickly re-adjust their self-image as future theorizers who could carry out independent research and produce original scholarship. While the challenges mentioned above are not unique to this specific doctorate program and are well documented in the extensive scholarship on doctorate students’ education, fewer studies have addressed the particular challenges faculty and students face as part of the latter’s transition from practitioners to graduate students and novice researchers. Therefore, we ask, what accounts for a successful process of supporting language teachers in becoming novice researchers? Our aim is twofold: first, to detail our pedagogical rationale, dilemmas we faced, and the solutions we carved out; and secondly, to contribute to a nascent discussion on doctorate students’ training and academic socialization in applied disciplines. Using Mezirow’s adult learning theory of Transformative Learning, we describe the challenge of designing a process of academic socialization that can support adult learners’ development and shift in perceptions, skills, and actions. During the first four cohorts of the program, in an introductory course, “Research Foundations,” we faced dilemmas regarding reading materials and teaching activities, and collected students' reflections and communications with us, the course professors. Accordingly, the paper explicitly emphasizes our efforts to actively foster a culture of independent learning and a productive learning community by introducing new knowledge and skills. The paper can benefit instructors who design and lead graduate programs for practitioners in any field of practice.

Mobile phones in Australia record one of the world’s highest rates of ownership among children under 18. This paper examines issues of mobile phones and Australian children and the various discourses (systematic frames) used in discussing their effects. These are the optimistic (gains); pessimistic (losses, costs or harms); pluralistic (technology per se is neutral but how it is used matters); historical development (importance and skills learnt); futuristic predictions (promises and dangers); current uses (connectivity, convergence and interactivity); and techno-realist view (as a mixed blessing). Taking the Justification View of Technology that sees technological adoption as a gamble and borrowing from Joshua Meyrowitz, it examines how mobile phones have eroded parental power over how, when, where and with whom their children communicate, while at the same time, becoming a ‘digital leash’ for parents to re-establish their control and an ‘umbilical cord’ of children to remain connected with parents at all times.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students are learning remotely or in a hybrid of remote and in-school learning. As a result, most teachers and students are in learning situations where more independent work is assigned to students. There is no research that directly speaks to this unprecedented situation. There is, however, a considerable body of established research to draw on about assigning independent work to students to do at home: research on homework. Further, technology to support homework is becoming more available and research supports its effectiveness. In this article, we review some of the major points of this established research and suggest how schools, teachers, and parents and guardians can apply this research and related technology now, during the pandemic.

In the current context, e-commerce has improved significantly as consumers have increased online shopping in different sectors of the economy. Therefore, the term “e-commerce” is becoming increasingly well-known and relevant for conducting business transactions. In addition, the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the extreme growth of e-commerce, and in the long term it will be a vital part of companies to achieve a greater competitive advantage as it offers benefits to the end consumer. However, it is important to note that there will be technological and non-technological limitations that will affect its growth. Nevertheless, the advance of information and communication technologies (ICTS) will tend to correct these limitations, consolidating the generalized increase of e-commerce worldwide. Consequently, it is pertinent that students of economics, administrative and accounting sciences, engineering, among others, expand their knowledge in e-commerce and thus be at the forefront of the different issues surrounding the digital transformation in companies and the digital economy.
