This study explores the dream content among Blinds in different areas of Pakistan like Gilgit, KPK, Sindh, Kohat, Hassan Abdal, Wah Cantt, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The purpose of the study is to examine the variables like dreaming, day dreaming, optimism and emotional regulation regarding dream content among blinds. Dreaming for blinds is less sighted and sometimes unable to understand but their dreams are unique in nature because blind see dreams without visual experiences. This study explored the elements of dreams like structure, figures, family members’ appearance, colors, good or bad events, existence of other people. It was compared to the real life aspects such as how blinds perceived their family members in dreams and how they look in real life. Data was collected by interview guidelines taken by 16 blinds. Most of them were totally blind and rest of them were partially blind. The data was analysed thematically by creating themes and codes from the interviews by researcher manually. An ethical interview guideline approved by experts was used to take interviews consisted on 23 demographic variables and four other variables such as dreaming which had 13 questions , day dreaming had 18 questions, dream optimism had 16 questions and dream emotional regulation had also 18 questions. The comparative findings of this thematic analysis concluded that some of the events of dream content of blinds is not reality based such as partially blinds perceived their family members in dreams, they are not seemed as in real life and totally blinds even can’t see their family members in dreams.

Blind individuals now utilise a conventional cane to guide them as they go from one location to another. Even though the standard cane is the most widely used aid for the blind today, it is unable to assist them in identifying hazards from various degrees of obstruction. Within this framework, we suggest a novel intelligent system to assist those who are blind or partially sighted. Through the usage of this device, blind persons may walk around with the same confidence and ease as sighted people. The system is connected to a GSM- GPS module in order to pinpoint the blind person's position and create a wireless two-way communication channel. Additionally, it uses ultrasonic sensors to offer direction information and obstacle avoidance information. The system is further enhanced with a vibrator, an accelerometer sensor, and a beeper. The white cane is utilised in conjunction with the compact and lightweight system. The outcomes demonstrated that the blinds utilising this method could move securely and autonomously. Key Words: AT commands, Microcontroller, Short Message Service (SMS), Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), and Assistive Technology.

Belonging has significant impacts on success in postsecondary. Blind people are underrepresented in postsecondary and lack equitable opportunities to develop a sense of belonging. To build a better understanding of this underrepresented experience, this study shares narratives of 28 Blind students from across Turtle Island (and what is colonially called Canada) using Teng et al.’s (2020) Belonging in Academia Model (BAM) as a conceptual framework. Thematically analyzed findings suggest that blind students’ perspectives offer nuance to the BAM’s conceptualization of how belonging develops. For blind students, external factors such as class size are especially important in determining affiliation with an institution. Blind students elucidated the importance of familiarity with different ways of being in the world, including blindness. Third, acceptance involved having their blind embraced in postsecondary contexts. Forth, interdependence was key to building trusting connections for blind students. Fifth, blind participants discussed equity at length related to access, the added work of trying to obtain access, and the emotional work involved. This study helps fill a gap regarding the experiences of these traditionally underrepresented postsecondary students in Canada. The BAM may raise the consciousness of stakeholders in considering the unique factors impacting belonging for blind people. By attending to these perspectives, stakeholders can become more responsive to the experiences of people from equity-deserving groups. Understanding facilitators and barriers to belonging could result in culturally safer practices and inclusive pedagogical practices and system policies. Only when we create a space where everyone can belong will higher education be truly inclusive.

AbstractThe aims of this study were twofold: to assess the level of balance of people with visual impairment against the BOT-2 standard scores for the able-bodied, and to identify in which trials subjects had the greatest difficulties in maintaining balance with respect to the degree of vision loss and age categories. One hundred twenty-seven subjects with visual impairment aged 6-16 years, participated in the study (68 girls and 59 boys). The division for partially sighted people (61) and the blind (66) was made according to the WHO classification. Functional balance assessment was made using a balance subtest from the Bruininks-Oseretsky test. Significant relationships were noticed between age and the level of balance (χ2= 8.35 p <0,05), as well as between the degree of vision loss and the level of balance (χ2= 24.53 p <0,001). The level of balance of almost all blind subjects was below (20%) or well-below (60%) the average for the able-bodied. The subjects’ ability to maintain balance was not dependent on gender and was associated primarily with the degree of visual impairment and age. Partially sighted people had better balance than the blind and the decrease in visual acuity resulted in reduction of balance skills. The lowest level of balance was observed in blind students aged 7-11 years. Elaborating physical fitness improvement programs for children and adolescents with visual impairment, diversity of age, the degree of vision loss and limitations of ablility to maintain balance should be taken into account.

This essay aims to elaborate the technology when it comes to banknote making for visually impaired members of the society. The visually impaired are divided in three subgroups: color-blind, partially sighted and blind people. Their first needs are useful denomination features rather than security features, as they help them in determining a banknote’s value. This study provides a historical overview of banknote design features for the visually impaired. Furthermore, it looks into the methodology of banknote tests for the color-blind, showing images of how the color-blind experience the euro banknotes. Two features are needed for every subgroup of the visually impaired to establish the banknote’s value; one is not reliable. These two features are dedicated firstly to the relevant user group, but will also be used by others, including people with normal vision.

If conceptual retrieval is partially based on the simulation of sensorimotor experience, people with a different sensorimotor experience, such as congenitally blind people, should retrieve concepts in a different way. However, studies investigating the neural basis of several conceptual domains (e.g., actions, objects, places) have shown a very limited impact of early visual deprivation. We approached this problem by investigating brain regions that encode the perceptual similarity of action and color concepts evoked by spoken words in sighted and congenitally blind people. At first, and in line with previous findings, a contrast between action and color concepts (independently of their perceptual similarity) revealed similar activations in sighted and blind people for action concepts and partially different activations for color concepts, but outside visual areas. On the other hand, adaptation analyses based on subjective ratings of perceptual similarity showed compelling differences across groups. Perceptually similar colors and actions induced adaptation in the posterior occipital cortex of sighted people only, overlapping with regions known to represent low-level visual features of those perceptual domains. Early-blind people instead showed a stronger adaptation for perceptually similar concepts in temporal regions, arguably indexing higher reliance on a lexical-semantic code to represent perceptual knowledge. Overall, our results show that visual deprivation does changes the neural bases of conceptual retrieval, but mostly at specific levels of representation supporting perceptual similarity discrimination, reconciling apparently contrasting findings in the field.

This research introduces a blind aid that uses a live object recognition system. People who are blind or partially sighted rely significantly on their other senses, such as touch and auditory cues, to comprehend their surroundings. There is a need to deploy a technology that assists visually impaired persons in their daily routines, as there is now very little aid. Existing solutions, such as Screen Reading software and Braille devices, assist visually impaired individuals in reading and gaining access to numerous gadgets. However, these technologies are rendered worthless When the blind need to perform basic activities like recognizing the situation before them, such as recognizing people or objects, technologies become ineffective. This method will benefit blind or visually challenged all across the world. The goal is to help a person with total or partial blindness obtain a second set of eyesight without the assistance of a guardian, allowing them to live a better and more independent life. This project outlines working to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment, focusing on assistive technology that provides services, resources, and information to those with visual disabilities.

Mental rotation tasks have been used to probe the mental imagery both of sighted and of visually impaired people. People who have been blind since birth display a response pattern which is qualitatively similar to that of sighted people but tend to respond more slowly or with a higher error rate. It has been suggested that visually impaired people code the stimulus and its (or their own) motion in a different way from sighted people—in particular, congenitally blind people may ignore the external reference framework provided by the stimulus and surrounding objects, and instead use body-centred or movement-based coding systems. What has not been considered before is the relationship between different strategies for tactually exploring the stimulus and the response pattern of congenitally blind participants. Congenitally blind and partially sighted children were tested for their ability to learn and recall a layout of tactile symbols. Children explored layouts of one, three, or five shapes which they then attempted to reproduce. On half the trials there was a short pause between exploring and reproducing the layouts. In an aligned condition children reproduced the array from the same position at which they had explored it; in a rotated condition children were asked to move 90° round the table between exploring and reproducing the layout. Both congenitally blind and partially sighted children were less accurate in the rotated condition than in the aligned condition. Five distinct strategies used by the children in learning the layout were identified. These strategies interacted with both visual status and age. We suggest that the use of strategies, rather than visual status or chronological age, accounts for differences in performance between children.

The subject of this research is architectural typhlography—tactile drawings, dedicated to the blind and thematically related to architectural objects and spaces of various scales. This collection is very diverse and includes both representations of specific spaces as well as adaptations of ordinary (visually accessible) architectural drawings. The phenomenon of typhlographics has not yet found an appropriate scientific emplacement in the architectural discipline. Based on the collected research material, including Polish and foreign studies, the authors have made a multi-criterial division of the tactile drawings according to specific criteria. The result of the research is a pioneering typology of architectural typhlographs, made in seven categories. This publication, organizing the issues of architectural typhlographs and proposing a unified terminology of the phenomena and concepts studied, may be used by other researchers who explore the subject of the accessibility of architectural space for the blind.

The UK is projected to have over four million people with sight loss by 2025, a doubling from current figures (RNIB, 2023). Despite using aids such as white canes and guide dogs, visually impaired pedestrians face challenges like navigating complex crossings and avoiding obstacles on sidewalks (Zeng, 2015; Rey-Galindo et al., 2020). These obstacles not only restrict mo-bility but also contribute to social isolation and reduced independence (Shimizu, 2009; Long et al., 1996). This study explored the safety concerns of blind and partially blind pedestrians and sought to identify interventions to enhance pavement safety. Using methods like Henry Garret's ranking and Fisher-Freeman-Halton tests, the study found that 48% of participants felt unsafe on sidewalks. Interestingly, 57.1% identified road improvements that increased their feelings of safety. Concerns differed between blind and par-tially blind individuals, with blind pedestrians worried about unpredictable obstacles and partially blind individuals concerned about other road users' lack of awareness. Additionally, visual impairment type and orientation and mobility (O&M) training levels were found to correlate moderately with safety concerns related to pavement obstacles. Based on these insights, the study recommended interventions in six key areas: infrastructure enhancement, maintenance, road user awareness, regulation refinement, O&M training im-provement, and mobility aid development.

This research aimed to understand the challenges blind and partially sighted people experience in tourism and the travel information they need to plan their travel experiences effectively. To this end, we designed a mixed-methods study consisting of semi-structured interviews and co-design workshops, which were conducted to identify the needs of BPS people and the barriers experienced due to a lack of access to such information. The findings provide insights into the information-seeking process and highlight the role of experience sharing in cultivating a sense of agency, contribution, and interdependence. This study also contributes an accessible tourism ecosystem map based on our findings to highlight the different sources of travel information and their potential role in supporting inclusive travel for BPS people. The findings have implications for research and tourism service design and serve as a tool to motivate research on technologies to support inclusive leisure travel for BPS people and to inform the design of inclusive tourism services.

The aim of this review is to analyze, based on relevant scientific sources, the problems faced by blind and partially sighted people in health care, as well as to identify opportunities for solutions to these challenges. Blindness and visual impairment are serious health conditions that can significantly affect an individual's quality of life. These individuals often face numerous challenges when accessing health care. Accessibility of the physical environment, communication with healthcare professionals, access to information, and use of medical devices are some of the key issues. Improving access to health care can be realized through the application of technological solutions, education of health workers, provision of accessible communication and information, and the inclusion of blind and partially sighted people in health care planning.

Recreational sport and social activity of visually impaired people. A case study: The Center of Adaptive Technologies of the Regional Nonprofit Organization of Persons with Disabilities “Nadieżda”Totally blind and partially sighted people have to confront threats that decrease their quality of life. The whole world is structured by people who do not challenge visual impairments, and these structures often are not accessible for persons with vision loss. Such conditions thwart active participation in social, economic and political life, and people with visual disabilities are often excluded. It also applies to recreational sports. Blind and partially sighted people often do not have a chance to do sports. Recreational sports are considered to be an effective and necessary tool of rehabilitation. A research that was conducted in the Center of Adaptive Technologies of the Regional Organization for Persons with Disabilities “Nadieżda” showed that people with visual disabilities who do recreational sports can become more active socially and recreational sports can have a positive infl uence on their health.

Blindness is a condition in which a person’s sense of sight does not function either partially (low vision) or as a whole (total blindness). Physical limitations make it difficult for them to access information and knowledge in the form of books or other printed media. This study was aimed at developing application smartness help for the disabled blind with text and image. The research method (RD) uses the waterfall model. The study was conducted at SLB-A YPPLB Payakumbuh with the results of the assessment of material experts 93.3%, and media experts 86.7% who stated that the Smartness Help application was “very feasible” to use and be tested on blind people. The results of trials on blind people using the Smartness Help application yielded 87% results, all of which were categorized as very feasible.

How does first-person sensory experience contribute to knowledge? Contrary to the suppositions of early empiricist philosophers, people who are born blind know about phenomena that cannot be perceived directly, such as color and light. Exactly what is learned and how remains an open question. We compared knowledge of animal appearance across congenitally blind (n = 20) and sighted individuals (two groups, n = 20 and n = 35) using a battery of tasks, including ordering (size and height), sorting (shape, skin texture, and color), odd-one-out (shape), and feature choice (texture). On all tested dimensions apart from color, sighted and blind individuals showed substantial albeit imperfect agreement, suggesting that linguistic communication and visual perception convey partially redundant appearance information. To test the hypothesis that blind individuals learn about appearance primarily by remembering sighted people’s descriptions of what they see (e.g., “elephants are gray”), we measured verbalizability of animal shape, texture, and color in the sighted. Contrary to the learn-from-description hypothesis, blind and sighted groups disagreed most about the appearance dimension that was easiest for sighted people to verbalize: color. Analysis of disagreement patterns across all tasks suggest that blind individuals infer physical features from non-appearance properties of animals such as folk taxonomy and habitat (e.g., bats are textured like mammals but shaped like birds). These findings suggest that in the absence of sensory access, structured appearance knowledge is acquired through inference from ontological kind.

AbstractDigital media offers multiple possibilities for inclusion of people with disabilities. Nevertheless, they pose barriers especially for blind learners as they hinder an active participation in synchronous learning settings. Virtual classrooms are a particularly good example for a complex media application as they combine various media types such as audio, video, graphical content and text which can only partially be perceived. Our work pursues the goal to facilitate an equal participation in virtual classrooms for blind users. In order to overcome these barriers, alternative user interface concepts for the display on a two-dimensional tactile Braille device have been conceived. Based on these concepts, the virtual classroom solution BigBlueButton was improved thereupon. A subsequent evaluation simulated a learning session with blind users in order to determine the acceptance and usability of the software adaptation. This user study shows that an active participation of blind learners in virtual classroom sessions can be achieved by using multimodal output devices and alternative concepts.

This article introduces the “Mobile Bio-Eye-Tronic System” which is an artificial vision system for the impaired (blind) people and also low vision (sight loss) people. “Mobile Bio-Eye-Tronic System” is a completely original project and unique to the author of this article. There are 45 million visually impaired (blind) people in the world and 135 million low vision (sight loss) people. 60% of blindness in the world is treatable and 20% is preventable. 25 million people are blind in Europe, 12 million in America, 9 million in India, 6 million in China, and 7 million in Africa. In Turkey, this number is approximately 300 thousand. Based on these statistics, the main aim of this article is to appeal to hundreds of thousands of people, to help them fulfill their daily activities, even partially, to improve the quality of life of these visually impaired people and to restore their health. In addition, the scientific and technical studies to be carried out on this subject will contribute to the enrichment of the literature on the subject and will also be beneficial for scientific and technical progress. When the current studies on bionic eyes are examined, there is no other system in the literature that obtains results using a mobile phone camera and software. The bionic eye stated in this article will be a first in this respect. [1-29]

In England there are over 100 000 elderly people registered blind and a further 80 000 registered partially sighted. Visual impairment is common in the elderly population, with approximately 10% of people of 65 years of age and over having poor vision. The prevalence of visual problems appears to be much greater among older people in institutionalized care. A study of 100 elderly people living in residential homes in London revealed that 51% had cataract and 34% had significant refractive errors. A further study of patients attending a geriatric day centre found that about one-third had unrecognized visual loss.

Since there are blind and partially sighted people all over the world, they face significant challenges when it comes to reading. In the past, Braille was the only solution for the blind and visually impaired to read and learn. However, there is a lack of training in Braille and a shortage of Braille machines and facilities. To address these issues, a smart reader for the blind integrated with Raspberry Pi technology has been proposed. The system utilizes YOLO (You only look once) for object detection, OCR (Optical Character Reader) for text recognition, and Google Text-to-Speech to capture and read text aloud through a speaker or headphone. Smart glasses offer real-time assistance and enhance the daily lives of visually impaired individuals. Through a combination of sensors, cameras, and audio feedback systems, these smart glasses enhance the reading capability of the visual impaired. Moreover, advancements in artificial intelligence and Deep learning algorithms further enhance the capabilities of these devices, enabling more accurate personalized assistance.

Abstract. It is understood that all human beings need information, including spatial (geospatial) information. It has to be noted that spatial and geospatial information helps people to enrich the knowledge about certain regions. In general, the knowledge is very significant for strengthening orientation ability, which, in turn, affects the level of intelligence. It is believed that the better a person can recognize geographical information the cleverer s/he is. Being able to have the spatial knowledge helps humans to fulfil their basic needs and find solutions to various problems. Present research uses Geographical Information System (GIS) to create paper maps, which can be transferred onto a touch display where the user can choose different keys and settings (such as colour, measurement, etc.) to represent different forms of data. The study aims to examine the effectiveness of digital interactive cartographical novel solutions in improving text and space memorization among visually impaired Kurdish students. The study’s purpose draws from the knowledge that Kurdistan learners and other demographic groups lack an effective multimodal communication map suited to contemporary society’s demands. The research seeks to fill the gap by presenting a strategy for developing interactive tactile maps for the target group to solve the growing problem of visual impairment in Kurdistan. Technologies associated with tactile maps are reviewed and the application of interactive tactile maps for populations, in addition to those who are visually impaired, is also considered. The obtained results are very useful for blind and low sighted users to communicate information through the assistive technologies on the map due to finding the geographical location easily.

Abstract Spatial orientation depends both on the information available in the surrounding’s environment and on the individual's ability to perceive and deal with this information. To be fully understand by its users as a transport network and, to independently move from one place to another, the urban public transport service must be able to provide accessible information where users can easily discover and reach different, and to socially engage in local activities. In Brazil, the information disposable to users is scarce and sometimes nonexistent in the urban public transport (PT), especially regarding the supply of information to everyone. This paper presents some doctoral research’s results applied in Brazil and discuss blind users’ orientation and mobility in urban public transport network. The investigation involved around two hundred blind and partially impaired users from many Brazilian regions where surveys were conducted; additionally, interviews with a focus group and the "Accompanied Walks” method. The results of the latter are here presented, showing environmental barriers and users needs.

Presented are results of the BIOVAM project in France concerning the problems experienced by the visually impaired who use public transportation, such as buses, subways, and trains. The project focused on information gathering and orientation processes in the public transportation context. The BIOVAM approach uses a questionnaire survey to identify the main difficulties that public transportation users with visual impairment must manage. The approach includes a review of promising devices that could reduce these difficulties, such as personal information systems and tactile pavements. An overview of the results obtained from the survey is presented, addressing the use of buses and subways. The main technical solutions considered by the project are described, and the research protocols that are to be used in the field experiments are presented. The results of the BIOVAM project could be used to make concrete recommendations to include the specific needs of travelers with visual impairment in the design of a public transport infrastructure.

BackgroundWe hypothesised that a combined regimen of clozapine, a relatively weak D2-dopaminergic antagonist, and sulpiride, a selective D2 blocker, would demonstrate a greater antipsychotic efficacy by enhancing the D2 blockade of clozapine.MethodTwenty-eight people with schizophrenia, previously unresponsive to typical antipsychotics and only partially responsive to current treatment with clozapine, received, double-blind, 600 mg/day sulpiride or placebo, in addition to an ongoing clozapine treatment. The clinical status was evaluated before, during, and at the end of 10 weeks of sulpiride addition using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression.ResultsThe clozapine–sulpiride group exhibited substantially greater and significant improvements in positive and negative psychotic symptoms. About half of them, characterised by a younger age and lower baseline SAPS scores, had a mean reduction of 42.4 and 50.4% in their BPRS and SAPS scores, respectively.ConclusionsA subgroup of patients with chronic schizophrenia may substantially benefit from sulpiride addition to clozapine.

Visually impairment means partially or completely blind. Students with visual impairments face several structural and attitudinal barriers when entering higher education. External factors have been identified as contributing to the academic success of visually impaired and blind students. These include social support and university student services, family support and faculty support. Emotional support from family members contributes to the academic achievements of visually impaired students. The study’s objective is to investigate the challenges and experiences of students with disabilities with specific reference to blindness and visual impairment at tertiary institutions and find possible solutions. The rationale behind the study is to address self-confidence, the stigma of society and improve society’s understanding of the visually impaired and the blind. The article outlines the role of the theoretical framework in the social inclusion of students with disabilities in higher education institutions. The article aims to use the conceptual approach to investigate the challenges of students visual impairment and blindness. It will rely heavily on secondary data. The main findings presented in this study are the challenges faced by the impaired and blind students, which are financial challenges, social stigma, accessibility, peer acceptance, language challenges of visually impaired students, lack of clear policies on inclusive education and mechanisms that will remedy the challenges of students with disabilities in higher education institutions. The South African government‘s strategic policy framework on people with disability at Higher Education Institutions recommend a critical analysis of current institutional policies that identify gaps regarding people with disabilities. The analysis includes the needs of people with disabilities in their annual action plans. It also comprises institutional infrastructure and programmes to include people with disabilities. The study concludes with the statement of the research problem, the summary of key arguments and findings, a short discussion of the implications of the research and the study’s recommendations.

Though consumers with vulnerabilities, such as visually impaired or blind and partially sighted people (BPSP), face several marketplace problems and challenges, existing literature provides limited guidance. The present study aims to examine the issues faced by BPSP in accessing financial services in Fiji. The study is grounded in the digital divide literature and reports that BPSP do face many hurdles in accessing financial services. We suggest that appropriate policies and industry initiatives could help mitigate the severe vulnerability faced by this cohort of the population in Fiji. We envisage that similar studies in other developing countries are required on an urgent basis to understand the international ramifications of the problem.

Purpose – The paper addresses the importance of clarifying terminology such as visually impaired and related terms before embarking on accessibility studies of electronic information resources in library contexts. Apart from briefly defining accessibility, the paper attempts to address the lack of in-depth definitions of terms such as visually impaired, blind, partially sighted, etc. that has been noted in the literature indexed by two major Library and Information Science (LIS) databases. The purpose of this paper is to offer a basis for selecting participants in studies of accessibility of electronic information resources in library contexts and to put discussions of such studies in context. Design/methodology/approach – Clarification of concepts concerning visual impairment following a literature survey based on searching two major databases in LIS. To put the discussion in context accessibility is also briefly defined. Findings – Although visually impaired and a variety of related terms such as blind, partially sighted, visually disabled, etc. are used in the LIS literature, hardly any attempt is made to define these terms in depth. This can be a serious limitation in web and electronic accessibility evaluations and the selection of participants. Practical implications – Clearly distinguishing between categories of visually impaired people and the ability of sight of participants is important when selecting participants for studies on accessibility for visually impaired people, e.g. the accessibility evaluation of web sites, digital libraries and other electronic information resources. Originality/value – The paper can make a contribution to the clarification of terminology essential for the selection of participants in accessibility studies, as well as enriching the literature on accessibility for visually impaired people in the context of LIS.
