The article examines the role of the proletariat in the preparation and implementation of the October Revolution of 1917. The author shows that after the revolution, the Bolsheviks had every reason to be disappointed in the proletariat as a class as they started decreasing in number rapidly due to the return of peasants to villages and difficulties in working in enterprises in cities. Much attention is paid in the article to the concept of "dictatorship of the proletariat", which has become the centre of the Bolshevik ideological programme. The tectonic change of 1917 not only disrupted the country but also placed, for a brief moment, a “little man” at the centre of “big story.” Nikolaev was a typical representative of ordinary people being pushed into a corner by circumstances and deceived in their expectations by a pseudo-socialist state. The high expectations of ordinary people, who were involved by the Bolsheviks in their politics, naturally crashed into the harsh realities of the construction of socialism.Brought to political life from social non-existence, this ordinary man soon became unnecessary to the new political regim

Abstract This study deals with the emergence of organised forms of resistance to the Bolshevik policies of secularisation, and the role that documents introduced into the religious landscape in the 1920s by the Soviet regime played in it. Integral to the Bolshevik campaign of eliminating religions, the mandatory registration of religious communities transposed into the religious landscape the organisational forms and techniques of the production of documents characteristic of bureaucracy, which enhanced the capability of believers to pose an organised resistance to antireligious policies. Using the example of discussions on the building of the Komi-Permyak district, the author analyzes the features of national state building in the RSFSR in the 1920s. The article focuses on one of the turning points in the process of establishing the Komi-Permyak district, namely the situation in 1921, when the initially unpopular idea of separating the Permyak region from Perm province unexpectedly became popular among the local population in the course of just a few months. They interpret it either as “non-Russian” (emphasizing the disproportionate share of ethnic minorities among the revolutionaries) or as a continuation of the traditions of Russian imperialism and messianism (in which case Bolshevism is seen as a project imposed by the Russian center on the non-Russian periphery).
