Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The thesis investigates the contemporary practice of book art, examining in particular the manner in which it fits both into the tradition of the book and the tradition of art making. The thesis spans two volumes. Volume One discusses the phenomenon of the artist's book from three vantage points: the attempts to define it, the attempts to catalogue it and the attempts to interpret it. Volume Two is an artist's book and although it is part of the project I have set myself, it is not being submitted with the theoretical component of the MA dissertation, but as part of the practical component. (Briefly, one of the tasks it embarks upon is an examination of the phenomenon of thesis writing, as understood and endeavoured by myself in the production of the first volume - in this sense it is self-reflective. Another is an examination of some aspects of my attempts to make examples of artist's books, which includes an investigation of some of the recurrent themes and preoccupations of my work) Volume One is set out in three chapters. The first chapter pursues a definition of book art and the artist's book in order to draw some perimeters around the subject, and to build a picture of its nature. In the course of doing this, the ideas of some book artists and book art commentators are considered in an attempt to create a richer tapestry of understanding. In the next chapter some of the ways in which book art has been categorised are discussed. This is in order to more finely delineate the nature and scope of book art. It is also to bring some clarity to bear upon the different components and manifestations of a vast and sometimes confusing oeuvre. I then suggest a system of classification of my own which offers an adjacent model for investigating artists' books and the endeavour of book art. With the above model in place, I undertake a foray into the arena of interpretation. Here I suggest the suitability of adopting certain methodologies of interpretation that come from the field of contemporary literary studies in general, and the interpretation of poetry in particular. I draw comparisons between the book artist and the poet, and suggest that they occupy a similar territory of meaning making. In the course of laying out my arguments in the three chapters, I refer extensively to examples of artists' books in order to make particular points. Where I consider it apt, I draw upon my book art as a source of example. In this way, I am able to weave into the text some information and reflection about my own practice and concerns as a book artist.
Waar ek dit as gepas beskou, verwys ek, by wyse van illustrasie, na my eie boekkuns. Op hierdie manier is dit vir my moontlik om inligting en besinning oor my eie praktyk en pre-okkupasies as boekkunstenaar met die teks te verweef.

Electronic media have lagged behind their paper progenitors in the clear, usable display of large bodies of information. New visual languages have been created for information display which exploit the computer's unique ability to render dynamic and three-dimensional typography. These languages demonstrate that the use of three dimensional form, expressive movement, visual focus and layering, in harmony with human perceptual abilities, improve navigation and contextual understanding of complex written documents. This thesis shows that graphic displays can be combined with physical interfaces to create interactions with purely typographic information that are rich, tactile and humane.

The present project of a virtual store for buying and selling used books shows the feasibility of its execution based on the research carried out, in which it was identified that many men and women of the NSE A, B and C have accumulated books in home and do not know what to use to give them. Likewise, it was identified that many of these people have the need and desire to buy books, however, due to the high prices, they cannot buy them. Finally, with the arrival of COVID-19 and the increase in the use of technology in society, there has been a greater preference and need to stay at home, do activities through different electronic devices, quickly, easily and comfortably. For the development of the project, an evaluation and analysis of the target audience, suppliers, competitors and other factors was made. Likewise, different plans were made that allowed organizing and developing strategies to make the project more efficient, which were: Strategic Plan, Operations Plan, Marketing Plan, Human Resources Plan and Corporate Social Responsibility and the Financial Plan. Finally, after an initial investment of 28,618.34 soles in the first year of operations, a net profit of 8,707.06 soles was obtained, 87,997.25 soles for the second year and 42,424.24 soles for the third year.

Strict comparative analyses of the morphology of arachnid book lungs (Arachnida Lamarck, 1801 - Arthropoda: Chelicerata) were carried out in the present doctoral thesis using modern methods, resulting in a new perspective on arachnid phylogeny. Comparisons with potential aquatic sistergroups (Xiphosura and/or Eurypterida) and fossil scorpions give rise to the hypothesis of the unique terrestrialization of ancestors, which is common for all arachnids. Data from 200 Recent + 2 extinct scorpions, 16 whip spiders (Amblypygi), 17 whip scorpions (Thely-phonida), 1 schizomid (Schizomida), 1 extinct trigonotarbid (Trigonotarbida) and 1 outgroup - horseshoe crab (Xiphosura) are assembled into an illustrated catalogue of arachnid book lungs. Following the observations of these gradually differing cuticular structures the vast variation of book-lung fine structure across Arachnida requires unequivocal definition of characters and character states. Five characters are defined, which are assigned to distinct homologous book-lung structures: (1) the surface structure of the respiratory lamellae, (2) structure of the distal edges of the lamellae, (3) the posterior edge of the spiracle, (4) the anterior edge of the spiracle and (5) the structure of the wall lining the atrial chamber. Especially the book-lung characters 1-3 contain unexpected information, which helps resolve relationships within Scorpiones to a high degree, and characters 4 and 5 are of considerable importance for Uropygi s. lat. One sixth character (sensilla/pores) is mentioned, but sporadically examined. However, cuticular book-lung fine structure is studied using SEM, the gross morphology is reassessed using histological sectioning and 3D-reconstructions based on µCT. For investigations on trigonotabid fossils a new method yielding 3D-reconstructions from stacks of subsequent focal layers was developed.

The history of the book in the West shows how new technologies and ways of reproduction have changed the book`s structure, and modified its form and relationship with the reader. The supremacy of the codex over the volumen (scroll) and Gutenberg`s movable type (the printing press) are examples of these revolutionary transformations. According to the French historian Roger Chartier, nowadays the electronic text is making the opposition between book and screen disappear, and fostering new writing forms and reading in digital media. Texts become different on the printed page and on the computer screen (as well as in many other electronic gadgets). This represents a book change, which includes, simultaneously, structure, organization, writing manners and appearance. Its further, represents a cultural transformation in the book form, reproduction, distribution and relationship with the reader. A virtual book exists only in cyberspace and in the reader`s mind. In Design, digital technology and hypermedia bring several possibilities and new thoughts about a book`s project. Its pages are converted in hybrid territories, where typography, image, sound and movement involve the reader during the reading action. This means a new concept and the revision of the book`s visual project. This research approaches book design, literature and the narrative forms developed for digital media reading. It deals with form and content, looking for new characteristics of the electronic book as a novelty, and tries to find out which one is surviving this change from print book to screen.

The twenty-first century came under the great impact of the media revolution and the new electronic and digital information technologies, which led to the introduction of different means of communication, especially in academia, which facilitated the production of and access to information. Since 2009, the Federal University of Ceará had the policy to purchase eBook titles as need to insert academia into this new model of teaching and research practices. Thus, its main University Library has acquired a collection of electronics books on various fields, available to all university community, as an alternative source of information for research, teaching and community services. Observing this fact and knowing the need to evaluate products and services for libraries, this research proposes the following problem: What factors are considered decisive for the use of electronic books, available on the UFC´s library system for graduate students and Professors in all graduate programs? The research methodology works with quantitative and qualitative data, collected through electronic questionnaires, developed and applied through google docs tool. This will allow us to translate the answers into numbers and information, in order to organize them and to facilitate the analysis and suggestions for this new knowledge. This is an exploratory survey with a random sample, with no final conclusive arguments. The method of data analysis is the functionalist, accomplished through study of selected cases showing relevance to the research. To tabulate the data, we used the Microsoft Excel program. As a result, it was observed that teachers have demonstrated more knowledge on the existence of the collection of electronic books purchased and available by UFC than the students. In contrast, students demonstrated knowing more strategies of access than the teachers. As to the importance and satisfaction with this type of collection, students have a better knowledge on the electronic library than teachers. Even being unaware of this collection, students consider it very important. Teachers who don´t know the existence of this type of collection consider it more important than teachers who know it. To the degree of satisfaction, teachers demonstrated to be more satisfied than the students with the eBook collection. It was evident that the factors that contributed to the use of eBooks were: its gratuity at UFC portal, its wide availability and practicality. The factors that contributed to the failure of the use of this feature are: lack of motivation, information not included in the basic bibliographies, lack of a more significant disclosure, need for a tool to access it, and finally, resistance to change, once the public not want to change the pleasure of leafing a printed book to a virtual one.
