This work develops a numerical and experimental demonstration for the generation of chaotic signals using a new optoelectronic architecture belonging to the class of Ikeda systems. The principle relies on an electro-optic non-lenear delay dynamics, which non linearity is performed by a 4 waves integrated optics interferometer including 2 independent electro-optic modulation inputs: the non linearity is therefore two-dimensional (2D). This interferometer is a Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulator, which is a type of the integrated lithium niobate (LiNbO3) Mach-Zehnder modulators with 4 arms. This component allows to link two electro-optic loops to produce a chaotic optical intensity. The dynamics of the microwave oscillation can be described by two integro-diferential nonlinear delayed equations, with a nonlinear delayed term which is a function of two coupled variables. We have built a mathematical model of the system and analysed a number of its possible solutions : stable steady states, periodic and chaotic regimes. The experimental observations allowed to validate the dynamical model, through good qualitative agreements with the numerical simulations. This oscillator allows both to have ultra-fast dynamics up to several GHz frequencies, and potentially high dimensional chaos intended for encryption of optical data at the physical layer. Finally, the potential of decryption rate of the complete cryptographic system, consisting of a transmitter and a receiver, is numerically demonstrated using chaotic modulation of digital information at the rate higher than 3 Gbit/s

Optical lattices are structures created by the interference of laser beams, which make it possible to trap and arrange cold atoms. They have become a model system for several domains in physics, because it is possible to simulate other systems by changing the lattice geometry and its parameters. These characteristics are easy to modify experimentally. In particular, it is possible to obtain conservative optical lattices. In this thesis, we study the dynamics of an atom trapped in a 2D conservative optical lattice. The dynamics of the atom depends on the parameters of the lattice, and it is often complex. In consequence, this thesis is at the interface between the domains of cold atoms and non-linear dynamics. The study of the dynamics in the optical lattice needs to be done firstly in the classical limit. We examine in the first place the solutions to the movement equations obtained by numerical integration, for the different configurations of the system. They show a big variety of possible dynamical regimes. Amongst these regimes we find synchronization phenomena leading to a periodic movement locked in frequency. Synchronization seems to inhibit chaos in the system. The main solutions obtained numerically are also studied analytically. This approach allows us to obtain a description of the movement for the different dynamical regimes observed. All these regimes are easy to reproduce experimentally and the influence of synchronization on the existence of chaos needs to be studied. Additionally, this classical analysis serves as a basis for studying the system in the quantum limit

This work develops a theoretical and experimental demonstration for the generation of a wide spectrum chaotic signals. It consists of a new optoelectronic chaos generator, for which the dynamical variable is the optical phase. This chaotic modulation is produced using an electro-optic phase modulator combined to a fiber ring cavity, the latter performing at the same time a nonlinearity as well as a time delay. An optoelectronic feedback loop completes the system. Such a device can be modelled by a delay differential equation and can produce highly complex chaotic signals. The originality of the presented system lies in the fact that it can hide messages on a very large spectrum (several GHz). The manuscript consists of four parts. The first part introduces the theory of the Chaos and makes a state of the art in the field of delayed nonlinear dynamics. Then, we expose methods and tools helping to characterize the optical phase chaos generator. Finally, in the last two parts we give the theoretical model, numerical and experimental results related to the system

The mid-infrared domain is a promising optical domain because it holds two transparency atmospheric windows, as well as the fingerprint of many chemical compounds. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are one of the available sources in this domain and have already been proven useful for spectroscopic applications and free-space communications. The purpose of that dissertation is to go one step further by implementing a secure free-space communication relying on optical chaos and consequently, to give an accurate cartography of non-linear phenomena in quantum cascade lasers. Initial efforts about free-space secure chaotic transmission have been carried out during this Ph.D. thesis with two chaos-synchronized QCLs, which is a pioneer result paving the way for mid-infrared private communications. In order to have a global picture about the non-linear dynamics in QCLs under external optical feedback, we tuned many experimental parameters and this allowed us studying new phenomena in QCLs. We thus found similarities between QCLs and laser diodes when the chaotic dropouts are synchronized with an external modulation, known as the entrainment phenomenon. A cross-polarization reinjection technique led to square-wave emission in the output of the QCL. Eventually, we studied the triggering of rogue waves in QCLs. Rogue waves are a quite common phenomenon in optics (among other domains in science) but they have never been triggered on-demand in semiconductor lasers under external optical feedback before. Further studies will try to avoid such phenomenon in the output of a QCL under external optical feedback since it can disturb the message to be transmitted in a secure communication. All these experimental results allowed a better understanding of the non-linear dynamics of QCLs and will extend the potential applications of this kind of semiconductor lasers, which have currently been restricted to molecular spectroscopy and optical countermeasure systems

This thesis studied the dynamics of a laser diode subjected to a phase conjugate feedback (PCF). I analyzed both numerically and experimentally the evolution of the laser power, with speeds of the order of a few tens of GHz. First, I studied the chaotic signal generated by such a system, both by simulations and by experiment. Three indicators were considered: the chaos bandwidth, i.e. the range of frequencies over which the energy of the signal is distributed, the spectral flatness, which verifies that the energy is not concentrated on a single frequency, and the permutation entropy, which studies whether patterns are repeated in the signal. I observed that the chaos generated by such a system was both broadband (bandwidth of about 30 GHz) and complex (permutation entropy up to 0.994). Such chaos was observed over a wide range of experimental parameters, including the feedback strength, the feedback delay, or the laser pump current. Then, I study the very fast periodic phenomena previously observed with the PCF, the external cavity modes (ECM). The ECMs are regular self-pulsations of the laser power, at a frequency equal to a multiple of the frequency associated with the feedback delay. We extend previous experimental studies by varying the feedback strength, the feedback delay and the laser pump current. In particular, we observe experimentally two results that had only been numerically predicted. First, the ECMs are bistable, i.e. under the same experimental parameters they can have different frequencies. Secondly, we show that the frequency of the ECMs does not change significantly if we change the delay without varying the other parameters of the experiment. Finally, we study numerically the generation of square waves with phase conjugate feedback. We observe that the resulting dynamics are similar to those obtained with non-phase conjugate optical feedback

Non equilibrium processes lead in nature to the formation of spatially periodic and extended structures, so-called patterns. The birth of pattern takes place through the spontaneous breaking of one or more symmetries characterizing the homogeneous state. Changing one of more parameters leads eventually to the destabilization of the pattern in favour of a regime of space-time chaos. In other cases, the pattern is localized in a particular region of the available space, so what we deal with localized instead of extended structures. The goal of the work presented in this dissertation is to realize the control of both localized and spatiotemporal chaotic states in a nonlinear optical experiment. The experiment consists in a Liquid Crystal Light Valve (LCLV) inserted in a optical feedback loop. By means of a spatial light modulator, inserted in the optical path of the input beam, we have realized the control space-time chaos and localized structures. The system is modelled on the basis of a liquid crystals physical equation, which is coupled to the light propagation in the feedback loop. Numerical studies of the model are performed, showing quantitative agreements with the experimental findings

Degenerate quantum gases have demonstrated their ability to mimic the properties of other systems and are, as such, an ideal platform for quantum simulation. These gases, characterized by a high level of control thanks to the temporal driving of their parameters, have mainly been studied either in the perturbative regime or in a purely chaotic one. The aim of the present work is to further extend the possibilities offered by such systems by taking advantage of a mixed dynamics, which we apply to the case of matter-wave transport. In this thesis, we describe several experimental studies on the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional time-dependent optical lattice. The experiments that are presented fall into two categories: (i) the perturbative regime, where the applied modulations induce little chaos, and (ii) the mixed regime, where regular and chaotic trajectories coexist at the classical limit. In the perturbative regime, which was first studied during this thesis, we distinguish two modulation domains of the optical lattice. When the modulation frequencies are resonant with the band structure, we induce interband transitions that are subject to selection rules. We then demonstrate a new cooling technique, similar to evaporation but in reciprocal space, taking advantage of these selection rules. For a phase modulation out of resonance, the dynamics of the condensate can be described by an effective Hamiltonian. We study two such Hamiltonians, one of which accounts for a quantum phase transition and the other for the renormalization of the lattice depth. In each case we explore the limits of these models. The mixed regime constitutes the second focus of this thesis. The classical analogue of our system is the modulated pendulum, well-known to present both regular and chaotic trajectories. This behavior is revealed at the quantum level by the presence, in addition to the lattice structure, of a chaotic sea. In this optical lattice dressed by chaos, we study a type of transport called chaos-assisted tunneling, which presents resonances that can amplify or inhibit tunneling between two stable positions within a lattice well. Compared to previous experiments on this subject, we use a different configuration in which we manage to resolve these resonances for the first time. For quantum simulators, this work paves the way to a new type of control, including long-range transport

In this thesis we first show our experimental results on polarization instabilities in quantum dot (QD) lasers with vertical cavity, so called VCSELs. Their characteristics are different from what is typically observed in their QW counterparts: light that is linearly polarized close to lasing threshold becomes elliptically polarized as current is increased and then a wide region of polarization mode hopping between nonorthogonal, elliptically polarized modes sets on. Within this region the average dwell time decreases by eight orders of magnitude from seconds to nanoseconds. To our best knowledge this is the first observation of such a diversified dynamics of polarization mode hopping in a single VCSEL. We have also carried out theoretical studies of optically injected QD lasers accounting for the intradot carrier dynamics through the higher-energy excited states. We show that experimentally observed excitable pulses are complemented by self-pulsations resulting from the so-called bottleneck phenomenon. Finally, we have theoretically investigated optically injected QD laser lasing simultaneously from the ground and excited states. We show that although the external light is injected to the ground state mode alone, modulation of the relaxation time induced by injected signal can provide a gain switching mechanism leading to generation of picosecond pulses from the excited state

Laser diodes have become a key component in our everyday life. Discovered 50 years ago (1962), laser diode is used for reading information engraved in compact disk (CD), for transmitting informations in modern telecommunication systems based on optical fibers, for reading bar codes at the supermarket, for positioning and ranging and for lightning. All those applications need a stable and predictible behavior of the laser. Nonetheless, it has been shown that lasers can emit an chaotic fluctuation of light intensity under certain conditions i.e. an unpredictable dynamic. The chaos, or the high sensitivity of a system leading to its unpredictibility, is nowaday observed in a large variety of physical and biologial systems. Chaos explains for example the mathématical impossibility to predict the weather beyond few days. This thesis is therefore at the interface between two main scientific themes : the dynamical behavior and the specifications of laser diodes, and the study of optical chaos. We propose in a first part to study the generation of optical chaos from a laser diode using an optical feedback which leads to complex dynamics between two polarisation states of the laser. An in-depth analysis of this dynamic shows the existence of unexpeted correlation properties between the polarisations which manifest themselves on several time-scales. We demonstrate, on the one hand, the interplay between the different time-scales and on the other hand, we bring a physical interpretation to this phenomenon. In a second part, we focus on a peculiar dynamic leading to regular switching between two polarization states in a laser diode subjected to optical feedback. Those swtichings lead to square-wave modulations. The modulation frequency can be driven by a simple modification of the feedback parameters. In addition, we observe the emergence of oscillatory and undamped dynamics which accompagny the upper state of the square-wave. An experimental and numerical analysis show that the frequency of those oscillations exceed the usual frequency signatures for this kind of laser system. The analytical study predicts frequencies going beyond 20 GHz for a peculier type of lasers called VCSELs

Ultra WideBand (UWB) over fiber is a promising technology for meeting the demands of future wireless local-area networks (WLANs) and wireless personal-area networks (WPANs). Thanks to the enormous bandwidth and fiber characteristics, a high communication quality may be established at long reach. UWB wireless propagation must be achieved with special power and spectral constraints fixed by the regulatory bodies (e.g. US Federal Communication Commission). The novelty of our work originates from exploiting the benefits of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) so as to get a reach extension at limited cost and complexity. However, the inherent nonlinear effects and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) noise associated to such device may affect the system performance.Overcoming these impairments has been of central importance in this study. SOA nonlinearities have been mitigated by applying analog pre-distortion in electrical domain. Phaser-based processing was also proposed to simultaneously reduce ASE influence and linearize SOA characteristics, thanks to up/down chirping performed on the transmitter/receiver sides. With Impulse Radio UWB transmission, due to the time properties of modulation patterns, discrete lines arise in the corresponding spectrum, which may violate FCC limit or reduce the power efficiency. A new shape randomization technique has been investigated, which proved to be effective in suppressing these spectral spikes. The three approaches have shown a great potential with On Off Keying and Pulse Position Modulation formats at long optical reach. The performance of Differential Chaos Shift Keying was finally examined in the over fiber system, a lower error probability was experimentally achieved in comparison with other non-coherent modulations

There are two traditionally-separated approaches to optical quantum information: the continuous- and discrete-variable strategies respectively linked to the wave-like and particle-like nature of light. This thesis work is focused on the novel hybrid approach aiming to join the capabilities of both strategies into single systems. Using hybrid methods, we report on the use of optical parametric oscillators and superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors to generate highly non-classical non-Gaussian states such as high-purity single-photons, Schr\"odinger cat states and finally hybrid entanglement of light between continuous- and discrete-variable encoding. The potential of this resource is studied in a number of protocols. We first consider non-locality tests with hybrid entanglement such as Bell inequality violation and experimentally demonstrate the violation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering inequalities. We finally report on the progress made towards the implementation of a new setup for the demonstration of hybrid quantum teleportation between continuous and discrete-variable encodings. Our demonstrations prove the versatility of this hybrid resource and open the possibility of implementing scalable quantum networks linking systems of dissimilar nature

In this thesis, we propose a new scheme for the generation of mesoscopic optical quantum states of light, by the iterated use of an elementary protocol, based on a coherent adjunction of photons. This protocol takes advantage of the two complementary wave and particle descriptions of light, by involving intrinsically discrete states (photons, elementary particles of light) and continuous measurements on the electromagnetic field (quadrature measurements). We experimentally prove the validity of the protocol by showing that it enables the generation of squeezed optical Schrödinger cat states (coherent superposition of quasi-classical states). These states are of great interest as they can be used as the elementary piece in the coherent state quantum calculation, the "qubit" (or quantum bit). We also study the theoretical implementation of the protocol for the production of more complex states : the "quadrature Comb states", whose wavefunction along the quadrature x consists in a succession of thin gaussian peaks modulated by a larger gaussian envelope. Amongst other applications like quantum error correcting codes, we show that they allow for a violation of Bell's inequalities with homodyne measurements only, opening the path towards loophole-free violations

We present a generaland model-independent spectral theory relating first- and second-order dissipative phasetransitions to the spectral properties of the Liouvillian superoperator. In the critical region,we determine the general form of the steady-state density matrix and of the Liouvillianeigenmatrix whose eigenvalue defines the Liouvillian spectral gap. We discuss the relevanceof individual quantum trajectories to unveil phase transitions. After these general results,we analyse the inset of criticality in several models. First, a nonlinear Kerr resonator in thepresence of both coherent (one-photon) and parametric (two-photon) driving and dissipation. We then explore the dynamical properties of the coherently-driven Bose-Hubbard and of thedissipative XYZ Heisenberg model presenting a first-order and a second-order dissipativephase transition, respectively. Finally, we investigate the physics of photonic Schrödingercat states in driven-dissipative resonators subject to engineered two-photon processes andone-photon losses. We propose and study a feedback protocol to generate a pure cat-likesteady state
