Ovaj rad metodološki je zamišljen kao interdisciplinarno (filozofsko i teološko) promišljanje o duši. Epistemološki većinom se oslanja na spoznajno–teorijske izvore dvojice vrsnih poznavatelja koncepta duše: filozofa, teologa i kršćanskog naučitelja i biskupa sv. Augustina Aurelija (354. — 430.) i austrijskog psihologa, »oca psihoanalize« i pionira sfere nesvjesnog Sigmunda Freuda (1856. — 1939.). U radu želimo propitati konvergencije i divergencije s obzirom na njihov koncept duše. U radu će se odgovoriti na sljedeće: 1) na koji način Augustin razumijeva pojam duše, odakle polazi i na čemu temelji svoje razumijevanje o duši te 2) do koje mjere i na koji se način Augustinovo učenje o duši, izraženo u njegovim Ispovijestima, reflektiralo na Freudovo tumačenju duše shvaćene kao locus primus proučavanja uzroka i posljedica neuropatoloških fenomena u okviru kliničke prakse, detaljno opisane u Uvodu u psihoanalizu. U prvom dijelu rada, s teološkog i spoznajnog aspekta, propituju se temeljne postavke Augustinova shvaćanja i tumačenja duše, u duhu one Fichteove qualis homo, talis philosophia. Drugi je dio rada usredotočen na autoričinu interpretaciju Freudove psihoanalize kao terapeutske metode pomoću koje ne samo da se proučava nego i liječi čovjekova »bolesna duša«, odnosno »ličnost« (Allport). U trećem dijelu govori se o konvergencijama i divergencijama Augustinove i Freudove »teo–psihoantropologije«, jer ono što je zajedničko i Augustinu i Freudu jest fokus njihova istraživanja, a to je čovjek: za Augustina (raz)otkrivanje duše je put (raz)otkrivanja Boga, tako da govorimo o psihologiji koja izvire iz ascendentne teologije, a s druge pak strane, (raz)otkrivanje nesvjesnoga dijela freudovski protumačene Aristotelove »razumske duše« put je otkrivanja čovjekova osobnog identiteta (sebstva): čovjek je ishodišna točka u istraživanju Boga (tj. izvora dobra), ali i sebe samoga (sv. Augustin, Charles Taylor).

Charles-Augustin de Coulomb introduced his equations over two centuries ago. These equations quantified the force and the energy of interacting electrical charges. The electrical permittivity of free space was factored into Coulomb’s equations. A century later James Clear Maxwell showed that the velocity of light emerged as a consequence this permittivity. These constructs were a crowning achievement of classical physics. In spite of these accomplishments, the philosophy of classical Newtonian physics offered no causative explanation for the quantum condition. Planck’s empirical constant was interjected, ad-hoc, into a description of atomic scale phenomena. Coulomb’s equation was re-factored into the terms of an elastic constant and a wave number. Like Coulomb’s formulation, the new formulation quantified the force and the energy produced by the interaction of electrical charges. The Compton frequency of the electron, the energy levels of the atoms, the energy of the photon, the speed of the atomic electrons, and Planck’s constant, spontaneously emerged from the reformulation. The emergence of these quantities, from a classical analysis, extended the realm of classical physics into a domain that was considered to be exclusively that of the quantum.

The genealogical paradigm was renewed in French literary criticism in the XIXth Century. The problem it encounters is the following: on the one hand, to reduce the specificity of literary and artistic genius within natural or historical laws; on the other hand, being too fascinated by the uniqueness of genius, so that any historical explanation of the latter could be attempted. Literary genealogy in France is aimed at escaping the antithesis between reductionist naturalism and ahistorical romanticism. First approached through both a biographical and naturalistic method by Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve during the first half of the century, it turns into a more physiological and Darwinian perspective through Hippolyte Taine’s historiography. Seen from Nietzsche’s European point of view, this way of proceeding lacks self-examination, because every good genealogy must become aware of the values it conveys.

Much work has been done in the last half-century to shed some light upon the historical background of (and the intellectual motivation for) St Augustine's composition of his great hermeneutical treatise the De doctrina Christiana. In particular, the reason for the work's interruption and its subsequent completion some thirty years later has been the subject of some debate. Perhaps the most useful examination of this problem, as well as the most convincing conclusion, is found in the essay by Charles Kannengiesser. “The Interrupted De doctrina christiana," a paper delivered at the international colloquium entitled "De doctrina christiana: A Classic of Western Culture" held at the University of Notre Dame in 1991. Professor Kannengiesser argues that the interruption of the De doctrina christiana was a direct result of a confusion in Augustine's own hermeneutic, precipitated by his investigation of the hermeneutic of the Donatist Tychonius (whose Liber regularis Augustine examines in the conclusion to book III of De doctrina Christiana, under the title of Liber regularum). While this insightful and important article postulates answers to many questions about the Bishop of Hippo's intellectual motivation, both for the interruption of his work and for its resumption, it implicitly raises a further question of no little significance—namely, given the interruption of the work and Augustine's personal intellectual development in the intervening years between its interruption and completion, does the De doctrina christiana present a unified argument or a coherent philosophical understanding of the work of doctrina? For the purposes of this paper historical references will be secondary, as I will examine the De doctrina christiana solely in terms of its structure and argument, as well as its place in the Augustin ian philosophy of which it is a part.

Au Québec, l'historiographie régionale s'est développée à partir des années 1920 et 1930, prenant en quelque sorte le relais des monographies de colonisation des régions périphériques produites entre 1850 et 1914. Si les publications consacrées à l'histoire locale et paroissiale sont relativement abondantes au cours de l'entre-deux-guerres, les synthèses qui tentent de présenter une vue d'ensemble de l'évolution d'une région demeurent l'exception. Cet article se propose d'analyser les six principales synthèses d'histoire régionale publiées à cette époque: les Bois-Francs de l'abbé Charles-Edouard Mailhot, la Gaspésie du frère Antoine Bernard, le Témiscamingue de Augustin Chénier, l'Outaouais du père Louis Taché et al., le Saguenay de Mgr Victor Tremblay et les Cantons de l'Est de Mgr Albert Gravel. Bien que le niveau de formation et la rigueur de la méthodologie historique de ces auteurs ne soient pas les mêmes, ils partagent certains éléments d'un même cadre d'interprétation où la conquête du sol par les Canadiens français et le rôle dévolu au clergé dans la construction des structures locales et régionales occupent une place centrale. De plus, l'histoire économique apparaît comme un même point faible de ces synthèses. À une exception près, les auteurs sont tous des clercs. Fils de cultivateurs, ils appartiennent à une même génération née dans les années 1890. À l'exemple de Mgr Albert Tessier de Trois-Rivières qui en a inspiré plusieurs, ces historiens se feront les promoteurs du mouvement régionaliste des années 1930.

Charles-Augustin Coulomb published data on the size, strength, and stiffness of harpsichord wire available in Paris in the late 18th century which has not been cited in the literature on musical instruments despite this century's revival of baroque music and the instruments upon which it was played. During an investigation of the internal friction of several antique music wires by means of a torsion pendulum similar to the one invented by Coulomb and first described in the 1784 mémoire (Figure 1), it occurred to us to ask what Coulomb had used as the suspensions in his pendulum. His biographer, C.S. Gillmor, mentioned “harpsichord strings”, and in Coulomb's 1784 Torsion mémoire we found: J'ai pris trois fils de clavcin, tels qu'on les trouve répandus dans le commerce, roulés sur des bobines, et numerotés (“I used three harpsicord wires, such as one finds distributed in commerce, wound up on spools, and numbered”).The spools of wire recently discovered in the stand drawer of a harpsichord in France fit Coulomb's description. The instrument was built in Paris in 1732 by Antoine Vater, and the wire found with it was wound up on small wooden spools similar to spools for thread. The spool of red brass wire had a mark punched in one end and the spool of iron wire had the gauge size (No 5) written on it in ink, while the spool of yellow brass wire had neither mark nor number. Samples of the wires from these three spools, generally agreed to be of 18th century manufacture, were collected by J. Scott Odell of the Smithsonian Institution as part of a research project which he initiated into the physical properties of antique wire. With these samples in hand it was possible to measure certain of their properties and to compare these properties with those reported in Coulomb's Torsion mémoire in 1784. Since Coulomb's wire was undoubtedly of 18th century manufacture (a degree of confidence that we do not always have with collected samples), and the data were taken not long after the wire was drawn, comparison with the Vater wire allows us to detect if, during two centuries, significant changes occur in highly drawn wire.

This article considers the criticisms made by Friedrich Nietzsche of the ethics of St Augustine. Nietzsche’s main criticism presses us to ask whether Augustine can recognize an internal connection between natural human activity and supernatural happiness. The absence of any such connection, alleges Nietzsche, is the self-defeating flaw of Augustine’s eudaimonism, a flaw, paradoxically, that only insures human misery. Rebutting these charges, this article argues, requires us to recognize a form of natural happiness that is proportionate to create human nature.

Historian Charles Cutter has analyzed the “non-adversarial nature” of the Spanish legal culture and the manner in which Spanish authorities deployed written law (ley), customary law (derecho), and personal discretion (arbitrio judicial) effectively to achieve justice (equidad), even in peripheral areas of the empire. The primary objective of judicial administration was the resolution of conflict and restoration of harmony within the Spanish community. This paper uses civil and criminal records from second Spanish period Florida (1784-1821) to explore the gendered nature of Spanish legal culture by examining conflict between women and its resolution, as well as the ways in which the community and the court attempted to monitor and correct the “disruptive” behavior of women.

Responden diambil sebanyak 60 orang per toko dengan total responden sebanyak 300 orang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa besar ukuran toko dan keragaman produk yang dijual mempengaruhi daya tarik toko terhadap konsumen.Introducing new store to customer usually create the “customer shift” from the existing store to the new one. When the new store is located nearby the existing one, the shifting could not be avoided; it means the efficiency of store is becoming less than before. In order to optimize the efficiency of store the distance between stores should be managed. This paper implements theClassic Model of Electrostatic Forces that also known as Model of Coulomb.The Model was promoted by France Physicist, Charles Augustine de Coulomb, in 18th Century. The attractiveness of store to customer is represented by the electrostatic force on the Model. This paper is a descriptive research with a quantitative approach; the object of research is 5 (five) stores with different types in term of size and product offered. There were 60 qualified respondents selected on each store, in total it was 300 respondents. The result of the research tells that the size of store and the homogeneity of product offered are influencing the attractiveness ofthe store to the customer.

This article presents the recent edition which the research team, direct-ed by Olivier Bertrand, undertook in order to give back to the schol-arly community concerned with Augustine of Hippo the translation, in Middle French, by Raoul de Presles (1371-1375) of De civitate Dei commissioned by Charles V, the Good, King of France, while he was involved in the recapture of Brittany after the Treaty of Bretigny dur-ing the Hundred Years’ War. This translation, which originally enjoyed an enormous market success, has finally appeared in a critical edition consisting of five volumes. Until now, only the first two volumes have been available, containing, respectively, books I-III and IV-V.

In Brideshead Revisited, Waugh tried to tie specific trends in modern art to the general decline of culture, against which Catholicism stood as a bulwark. This essay examines the conversion of Charles Ryder that interacts with his, and Waugh’s, reaction to modern art. Parallels are drawn with the conversion of Saint Augustine. The essay concludes that Waugh’s critique of modern art theory is superficial, and ignores the relationship between Christianity and modern art. This relationship is explored through the work of Joseph Masheck. The history of pictorial flatness is traced through religiously inspired art and is seen to be in continuity with modern art such as the black paintings of Ad Reinhardt. Saint Augustine’s theology of art as a means rather than as an end functions in Brideshead Revisited as a way to reconcile Waugh’s Catholic and artistic intentions.

The paper presents Słownik warmiński of Wiktor Steffen as an unique work of the Polish dialect lexicography. It shows also the figures of the author and his brother Augustyn who rendered great service in research of the culture of Warmia. It discusses the editorial principles of the dictionary and its rich content. It relates to the charges of the first critics of the vocabulary. The paper treats Słownik warmiński as a personal, subjective work strongly influenced by the biography of the author – autochthon. It presents the different ways of use the content in the dialectological studies on multi-volume Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur conducting in the Institute of the Polish Language in the Polish Academy of Science (IJP PAN).

This essay is a reflection on the site-specific performance You are Here, created by Charles Campbell and Steve Epley on the roof of the University of Minnesota Tate Lab of Physics in May 2002. Scott Magelssen treats the production within the context of the previous site-specific work of Campbell and Epley, and their Minneapolis-based theatre company Skewed Visions, exploring the project's themes of knowledge-production and memory, the company's unique use of space, and the actor-object mode of performance. In an infamous passage in his Letter to the Galatians (2.11–14), Paul called out Peter as a ‘hypocrite’. This passage, especially when read in light of Paul's own appeal to himself as ‘all things to all people’ in 1 Cor 9.19–23, was to cause deep trouble for later Christian interpreters, who sought to defend their movement against charges from outsiders that it had a cracked and unstable foundation in dual ‘hypocrites’. This essay will introduce this ‘pagan’ critique and the cultural force it had, and the various solutions to the inherited dilemma from their scriptures that were offered by patristic authors (Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Jerome and Augustine). In light of this context, we turn to a sustained analysis of an untranslated homily by John Chrysostom,hom. in Gal 2.11(In faciem ei restiti), which addresses not just the hypocrisy of Peter and Paul, but also the sticky problem of the hypocrisy of the Christian who reads this text approvingly as Paul's ‘in your face’ to Peter. Chrysostom does this by engaging in a convoluted pretence of his own.

The ArgumentThe article explores the reasons for the rise to prominence of Newtonian natural theology in the period following the publication of the Principia in 1687, its continued importance throughout the eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries, and possible explanations for its rapid decline in the second half of the nineteenth century. It argues that the career of Newtonian natural theology cannot be explained solely in terms of internal intellectual developments such as the theology of Newton's clerical admirers or the impact of the work of Hume or of Charles Darwin. While such intellectual movements are undoubtedly of considerable importance in accounting for the rise and fall of Newtonian natural theology, they do not of themselves explain why British society was more receptive to particular bodies of thought in some periods rather than in others. Hence this article – in common with a number of recent studies – attempts to draw some connections between the growth of Newtonian natural theology and the character of Augustan society and politics; it also attempts to link the decline of this tradition with such nineteenth-century developments as the growing separation between church and state and the secularization of the universities and of scientific and intellectual life more generally.

In this essay I examine one author's peculiar struggle with the implications and expectations of realism in �ction. In late-Victorian England, George Gissing was at the epicenter of the debates about realism in the novel; for many of his contemporaries he was the archetypal writer of realist �ction. His novels seemed to rely on the grim detail and un�inching techniques associated with that school, and in his criticism he returned constantly to the question of "the place of realism in �ction" (the title of an essay he wrote in 1895). But Gissing never reached a stable verdict on the subject. In his masterpiece, New Grub Street (1891), one of his destitute writer-�gures is nicknamed "the Realist" and preaches "an absolute realism"; in the ruthless world of Gissing's modern Grub Street, the catchword is almost everywhere. What is so odd about the novel is how Gissing's portraits of aspiring realists vacillate between genuine sympathy and merciless satire. Sometimes Gissing seems to identify with those who subscribe to a platform of late-Victorian realism; at other times he appears to mock the whole ridiculous affair. New Grub Street effectively dramatizes Gissing's ambivalence about the workings and purposes of realism in the novel. In this essay I study his vexed attitude by considering New Grub Street in relation to Gissing's Augustan satirical precursors, the response to his �ction in the 1890s, and his own critical writings from the era, especially his extensive commentary on Charles Dickens.

Having considered the role of ethics in Indian mystical teachings in a previous, related, essay I would like to consider the same question in its western religious contexts in the present paper, beginning with the Christian mystical tradition. As is the case with Asian traditions charges of moral unconcern are widely directed at Christian mystics, but they are false. Christian mystics are not indifferent to morality nor do they disconnect morality from an intrinsic relationship to their mystical quest. Augustine would already teach that the story of Leah and Rachel was an instructive allegory in which the active life represented by Leah was intrinsic to the contemplative life represented by Rachel while Gregory the Great would unambiguously assert: ‘We ascend to the heights of contemplation by the steps of the active life’, defining the active life as: ‘to dispense to all what they need and to provide those entrusted to us with the means of subsistence’. These representative early samples of the salience of ethical behaviour to the life of contemplation could be multiplied at great length, and almost without exception in the teaching of the major Christian mystics. This historical exegetical exercise, however, is in the present circumstances, both out of place and I hope unnecessary. Instead, the more general, more enigmatic, more repercussive, issues raised by the place and significance of morality within the Christian mystical tradition need attending to.

AbstractSix tapestries depict the resistance of Zeeland's Sea Beggars to the Spaniards during the Eighty Years' War. Between 1572 and 1576 the fight for freedom was waged in the Scheldt delta. In 1591 the Estates of Zeeland ordered the first tapestry, a representation of the battle of Bergen op Zoom, from Francois Spierinx, a weaver in Delft. When it arrived in 1595, the Estates decided to have a series of tapestries made for the Prinsenlogement, or royal apartments, in Middelburg Abbey. The five tapestries were woven in the De Maecht workshop in less than ten years. Four of them, representing naval engagements, were designed by Hendrick Cornelisz. Vroom: The Battle of Rammekens, The Battle of Lillo, The Battle of Zierikzee and The Battle of Den Haak. The fifth, the Arms Tapestry, was woven after a design by Carel van Mander. Lord Charles Howard of Effingham, Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624) ordered from Spierinx a series of ten tapestries depicting the English victory over the Spanish Armada. These tapestries, which had hung in the House of Lords since 1650, were destroyed in a fire at the Houses of Parliament in 1834. Vroom based his designs for the Armada tapestries on maps by Robert Adams, engraved by Augustine Ryther. Compared with the Armada series, the composition of the Zeeland tapestries is fluent and vigorous. Vroom had actually visited Zeeland and spoken with eye-witnesses such as Joos dc Moor. The silhouettes of the towns are rendered in detail. Lord Thomas Howard ordered The Last Fight of the Revenge, dated 1598, from the De Maecht workshop in Middelburg. This fairly unknown tapestry, in a private collection since 1934, was on show at the Armada exhibition in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in 1988. It was erroneously presumed to have been woven by Spierinx in Brussels. Spierinx, however, came from Antwerp, and moved to Delft in 1591. In view of the dating and an art-historical comparison, an attribution to the Dc Maccht workshop is more likely. Hendrick Vroom designed The Revenge. It bears a marked resemblance to the Zierikzee and Den Haak tapestries in the Zeeland series; the border, too, is similar. Wool, silk, gold and silver thread were used. The latter were costly materials and rarely used in North Netherlandish tapestry production. The tapestry may have been ordered to commemorate Sir Richard Grenville's valiant action. On August 31 1591 Admiral Howard led his fleet to the Azores, off Pico island. His intention was to intercept a Spanish treasure fleet on its return voyage from the West. However, the English were taken by surprise by Armada ships. Howard ordered the retreat, but Grenville, vice-admiral and commander of the Revenge, ignored these orders. He engaged in battle with the attackers, was wounded and died on the Spanish flagship. The composition, a bird's-eye view, of the Revenge tapestry, bears a strong resemblance to the Zierikzee (1599-1603) and Den Haak (1600-1602) tapestries, both of which were woven under the supervision of Hendrick de Maecht, Jan de Maecht's successor. The borders of the tapestries woven in Middelburg echo Spierinx's Bergen op Zoom. The colours in the Bergen op Zoom tapestry are bright and soft, the figures are plastic and the surround merges harmoniously with the representation. Unfortunately this cannot be said of the Zeeland borders. Various alterations in the border of the Revenge mar the harmony and symmetry. The word 'Anno' and the year in the top corners are in the wrong order. In view of the woven rendering of the composition, the use of dark colours and the rather clumsy borders, The Last Fight of The Revenge is more likely to have come from Hendrick de Maecht's studio than from Jan de Maecht's. The latter's products are distinguished by the use of lighter colours and more accurate weaving, as is particularly evident in De Battle of Rammekens and to a lesser extent in The Battle of Lillo.
